hey guys. tumblr user thawthebeez back at it again with yet another haikyuu essay B) the topic of today is one that i see NOBODY talking about which is crazy because this motif is (in my opinion) one of the main foundations of the kagehina community.
now may someone please explain to me why the HELL nobody ever talks about how whenever Tobio expresses an insecurity of ANY KIND, Hinata is ALWAYS the first one to swoop in and tell him not to worry about it?
yes, we've all established that Hinata Shouyou is the #1 Kageyama Tobio understander. we get that. BUT THIS IS ONE OF THE MAIN DISPLAYS OF THAT AND I'VE SEEN LITERALLY NOBODY SPEAK OF IT EVER.
i'm pretty sure there's an instance of it in season 2 (either that or my brain just made it up) when Tobio is a little worried about his and Hinata's quick attack not really working out but Hinata tells him "nah you'll figure it out eventually" or something along those lines. i'm not going to lose my shit over it because i can't find it but if you know YOU KNOW.
a part that i COULD find from season 2, however, was this:
here we have Tobio explaining how talented of a setter Oikawa is- how he's so much better than him- and it's clear that this is something he's insecure about given his facial expression.
THEN we have Hinata's INSTANT response:
and it blows Tobio away because WHAT
because, to paraphrase a little, Tobio basically just said "yeah oikawa can make any spiker look good no matter what team he's on" to which Hinata replied "yeah but that team wouldn't be Karasuno" which is essentially "Karasuno is strong enough as it is" BUT- if ur crazy- " dw he wouldn't take your spot babe" (<- which probably isn't how it's meant to be interpreted because they just finished talking about The Team That's Stronger As Six thing so like... context clues. it's probably not the insane interpretation).
ANYWAYS boom there it is. Tobio expresses insecurity, Shouyou swoops in and goes "Ermmmm Actuallyyyyyđ¤" WHICH IS SO FUCKING ENDEARING ON IT'S OWN BUT THE FACT THAT IT HAPPENS MORE THAN ONCE AND AT SUCH A CRITICAL POINT TOO
the critical point in question being:
(context: Tobio just came back from his training camp in Tokyo and is a little frustrated because he's gotten so used to playing with other prodigies like himself so to go back to talented-but-not-prodigious players is a bit of a switch for him. don't get him wrong tho he loves this team to DEATH it's just a little different that's all. hashtag number one Tobio apologist right here)
SO THERE'S THIS! and it goes without saying that Tobio is DEEPLY insecure about his late middle-school days and being referred to as a king. Tsukishima adds a little salt to the wound and while I didn't take a screenshot of it Tobio makes this look of absolute HORROR after he says what he says
(which, side note, shows a lot of a character development within Tobio. especially since I've been flipping between season 2 and 4 a lot looking for these clips. Tobio didn't even notice when he was acting kingly before but he realizes it INSTANTLY now which is so so so good for him yayyyy character development!)
this also leads fantastically into my next tangent which is
TOBIO FUCKING APOLOGIZES!
now, admittedly this isn't entirely related to my thesis but i absolutely ADORE talking about this scene and i genuinely think it is one of the most prevalent displays of character development within Tobio because i feel like he tends to get overshadowed by all the other characters (especially Hinata, which i'm not upset about in the slightest like it makes perfect sense and if Tobio got all the attention all the time the show would be soooo unbalanced)
but I feel like a lot of people skip over Tobio's overall development over the course of the show. I mean compare s1 Tobio to s4 Tobio THAT IS NOT SAME PERSON ANYMORE. he grows so much over such a short period of time (which is another essay I could write. something along the lines of "Explaining Why Tobio And Shouyou Need To Be On Separate Teams Actually Because Character Development Purposes" because the amount of people i've seen on tiktok complaining about kghn being on separate teams and how they should just be on the same team forever makes my blood boil violently) and it's so refreshing to see Tobio's growth especially as a big Tobio enjoyer.
ANYWAYS back to the main thesis.
So Hinata steps in IMMEDIATELY here. literally cuts Tobio's apology off because HE HAS NOTHING TO APOLOGIZE FOR. he was expressing his thoughts whatever that's fine he could have done it in a nicer way SURE but listen the guy still has a LOOOONNNGGGG way to go but still, nothing to apologize for. it's just growing pains, y'know?
now the quote "What's wrong with him being the King again?" appearing here isn't the first time we're seeing this. Hinata has ALWAYS been confused as to why calling Tobio a "King" is a bad thing. literally from day fucking one Hinata was like "nah dude I think that title is cool" WHICH, AGAIN, TOBIO BEING INSECURE ABOUT SOMETHING AND SHOUYOU REASSURING HIM THAT IT'S TOTALLY CHILL HELLO?????
LITERALLY FROM DAY ONE SHOUYOU HAS BEEN DOING THIS. THAT MAN MAY THINK TOBIO'S AN ASSHOLE SOMETIMES (and he kinda is) BUT NEVER WILL HINATA INHERENTLY HATE A PART OF HIM. and i don't think they realize it here nor do i think the realization comes soon after but at some point there will be the realization that they love each other. every single part. fucking Tobio probably realized it way back in junior high but that's a tangent for another time.
now this line.... this one right here...... oh my god i can be SO NORMAL ABOUT IT.
the main reason why Tobio had this look of HORROR on his face after he yelled at everyone was BECAUSE HE KNEW THE ENDING. he knew that yelling at them would have consequences (if it weren't for Hinata stepping in thank god). HE'S SEEN IT ALL BEFORE. in his final year of junior high he yelled at his teammates to run faster and jump higher and be better AND THEY LEFT HIM!!!
so Tobio yelling like this instantly makes him afraid that he's just ruined the entire balance of the team. he thinks he's going to be left behind again because he yelled and everyone is going to leave him BUT!!!!!
BUT SHOUYOU IMMEDIATELY JUMPS IN AND SAYS "idc what u say honestly if i don't like i'm just not gonna listen" OR, TO TRANSLATE "i'm not going anywhere regardless of what you say"
Tobio's biggest fear is losing this team. I literally do not need to explain why. that man would fucking DIE for this team (if you really need an explanation just to go the end of the Kamomedai match when Tobio admits that he's upset they lost because he wanted to play with that specific team more).
and for Hinata to essentially say "you could literally be as kingly as u want and i simply would not care, pal, i promise you i am NOT going ANYWHERE!!!" which has got to be SO FUCKING RELIEVING FOR TOBIO.
(also something something "nobody was there" / "i'm here" something something "doesn't matter what kind of toss goes up if you send it my way i'm hitting it" something something they're soulmates or whatever they are literally bound together by the universe they were destined to be together and it's a crime that universe kept them apart for so long and now that they're together they will always BE together two peas in a pod literally inseparable they are hot glued and duct taped together.)
and then there's this. i mean at this point you already know what i'm going to say like you get it by now but again IT MUST BE SO RELIEVING TO TOBIO to know that shouyou thinks his biggest insecurity is cool. that shouyou thinks that it's not something to be concerned about. that no matter what, no matter how much a King he is, they're not going anywhere.
SOMETHING SOMETHING "you drew stars around my scars" IF YOU EVEN CARE
and just the fact that it's always ALWAYS shouyou to do this. the fact that there was dead silence before shouyou spoke up. the fact that it's ALWAYS HIM there to understand Tobio (someone who has been misunderstood for as long as he can remember) GOD THEY DRIVE ME INSANE.
anyways thank you for being a witness to this madnessđ
#i know kagehina day was like 3 days ago LISTEN#i'll be there on hinakage day i promise#but again the fact that this is not as commonly talked about as it is is WILD to me#also the âHinata and Kageyama need to be on separate teams actuallyâ is an essay i think i will genuinely write at some point#just one more tiktok of people saying ânoooo the boyfriendsss they need to be on the same teamâ and i'll do it i'll fucking do it#THEY CAN BE BOYFRIENDS AND BE ON DIFFERENT TEAMS PLEASE UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!!!1#they needed to be on different teams in junior high for obvious plot reasons#they needed to be on the same team in high school for character development reasons#and they NEED to be in different teams going forward so they can continue to motivate one another#THEY ARE EACH OTHER'S GREATEST MOTIVATORS#there is nothing they love more than playing against one another like did you SEE the adlers v. jackals match HELLO#even when the adler's were LOSING tobio looked like he was having the TIME OF HIS LIFE#and you could tell that Hinata loved it too. not just because he was finally making up on that âi'm gonna beat u one dayâ promise#if they end up the same team forever they will just never feel that joy THEY NEED TO BE ON DIFFERENT SIDES OF THE NET I PROMISE#a net is not enough to stop a red string of fate#anyways#volleyball guys#wahoo another essay for the haikyuu tag!

Hello!! I just finished reading In Another Life and I was wondering if I could request some soft Bokuto and/or Akaashi x reader? (I also wanna squeeze in that I LOVE your works, when they pop up on my dash it makes me happy so thank youu)
omg listen iâm not a bokuaka shipper (iwaoi and kagehina supremacy for me hvdshjd) but In Another Life made me cry bruh. anyways! first of all thank you so?? fkn much for your words??? they literally made my day you donât understand thatâs so sweet omfg. thank you!Â
i really hope this is what you wanted !! i wrote a scenario for akaashi, and another for bokuto. lemme know if thereâs anything else specific you were looking for, mwah! <3Â
akaashi keiji
ââ despite the fact that the warm water youâre submerged in grows colder by the second, akaashi only settles deeper into your embrace. his head rests on your shoulder, the palms of his hands resting above yours. your arms wrap around him, one hand occasionally traveling up to brush through damp curls. the only noise echoing through the small bathroom is the occasional sway of water against the bathtub, and your combined steady, slow breaths. when you glance down at your boyfriend, his eyes are half lidded, but he notices your stare and shifts his head up to look back at you.
the smile he offers is small, but genuine and serene. your smile is wider, and you canât resist the urge of leaning down and pressing a wet kiss on his cheek. he huffs out a laugh, tilting his head to the side to kiss your lips instead. itâs not the first time youâve kissed him today, or tonight, or even while in this bathtub with his sturdy back against your revealed chest, but it still excites you to your core. itâs a gentle kiss, slow and steady, careful and calm. his hands fly to the edges of the bathtub, pushing himself up and twisting himself around to face you.
âwhat, why?â you pout at him, and he chuckles again, inching forward towards you.
with his hands placed on your cheeks, steadying your gaze at him, he mumbles, âso i can kiss you better,â and presses his mouth on yours. you hum contently, sitting up on your knees, lips still latched onto his, as you crawl forward. your actions push him back, but he doesnât pull away as the kiss deepens, even as his back hits the other end of the bathtub. âso eager,â he teases, breathless, as he pushes you to straddle him.
âcan you blame me?â you retort, leaning back to admire him. the way he looks is nothing short of beautiful, with his skin dewy and his cheeks flushed pink, his eyes bright and his hair messy and damp. âhow could anyone resist someone so pretty?â you continue, your fingers ghosting over his facial features, dancing across his cheekbones and his pink, swollen lips. he tilts his head to press a kiss to your palm, shutting his eyes momentarily.
âi love you forever,â he confesses, pressing another kiss to your palm. âinfinitely.â he presses a kiss to your inner wrist, as light as a butterflyâs touch. âas many stars as there are in the sky.â his kisses travel up to your upper arm, to your shoulder. âas many galaxies as there are in the universe.â a kiss on your collarbone, with your heart in your throat. âtill my last breath,â he promises, with a kiss to your neck. finally, he faces you, his lips inches away from yours. âthatâs, if youâll have me.â
to answer him, you break the gap between the two of you, kissing him fully on the mouth. the waterâs long gone cold, but itâs not the cause of the shiver that travels up your spine when akaashiâs hands settle on the small of your back.
âi donât have a really dramatic confession prepared like you,â you admit, earning a laugh from him. âbut i love you, always.â he smiles gratefully, and kisses you again, his arms wrapping around your middle and taking you with him as he falls back again against the end of the bathtub.
bokuto kĹtarĹ
ââ usually, youâre very resistant to your boyfriendâs pleading eyes. maybe a few years ago, at the start of your relationship, you wouldnât have been able to say it with such certainty and ground. but you can safely say youâve grown immune to it. sometimes. occasionally.
definitely not when itâs his eyes and another puppyâs staring up at you pleadingly.
âlook at how cute,â bokuto repeats, his eyes leaving yours momentarily to stare at the small puppy. the labrador retriever puppy whines innocently, and you hold back a mountain of curses at the tightness in your chest. âcan you look me in the eyes and tell me he isnât the cutest thing you have ever seen?â he challenges.
you scoff, crossing your arms over your chest and defying him, ânot when youâre the cutest thing iâve ever seen.â compliments and flattery have always worked in your favor with bokuto, especially to distract him.
when he leans forward to pinch your nose cutely, you think youâve won, but then he resorts back to playing with the puppy through its cage. âplease, please, please!â
you sigh. âkou, youâre rarely even home nowadays,â you argue.
âbut thatâs the thing!â he responds. ânow when iâm away for games, you have something to keep you company when youâre lonely.â itâs a compelling argument, not that youâd ever admit that aloud to him.
if youâre honest, youâre not even sure how you found yourself in this situation to begin with. itâd been a simple date with your boyfriend, a casual stroll in the park, with some pretzels and lemonade. it had been a complete coincidence when a pet adoption centre conveniently appeared out of thin air, and then youâd see it coming as soon as you saw bokuto spot it. it was no secret his love for animals, and you admired every little thing about bokuto, even having come to love any and all his flaws.
but really. whoâs meant to take care of a puppy?
âbunny,â bokuto calls for your attention again. the puppyâs paw is resting above two of bokutoâs fingers, patting it softly. god, itâs becoming harder by the minute to resist. âfor me?â
fuck it.
âokay.â
time freezes, bokuto with it, until it starts again all of a sudden, and a pair of strong arms are instantly suffocating you. as a high schooler, bokuto had been fairly strong for his age, always so big and muscly. now, as an adult, his strength had tripled, and really, you canât breathe.
âbaby, i canât breathe,â you voice, lightly tapping at his back. he releases you momentarily, and youâre sure heâs never smiled at you this bright before. instinctively, because bokutoâs smiles and laughter have always been so contagious, you grin back at him, cupping his cheeks to force him to zone into your gaze. âthis is a mutual responsibility though.â
he nods seriously, leaning down to press a kiss to your forehead. âand itâll be good practice,â he adds, with a kiss to your lips. before you can ask him what he means, he leaves you stranded and confused, going to look for an employee. itâs only when youâre walking hand in hand with him, on your way back home, with his other free hand carrying the small cage your new puppyâs in, do you realize what he meant. and instead of dread, all that bubbles inside you is warmth and excitement.

Description:Â
Akaashi is a struggling writer working two jobs. His high school best friend, Kenma, is a successful Youtuber/streamer who just so happens to be dating famous rapper Kuroo Tetsuro. After being convinced to go to a show for their friend Hinataâs birthday, Akaashi meets his tourmate, rising star Bokuto Koutaro.Â
 Thank you for reading!! â¤ďźăŁďźžâżďźžďźÂ
 ---------------Â
Road To Nowhere
Akaashi is only half listening as Kenma's monotone voice floods his ear. His phone is pressed up between his cheek and his shoulder as his hands work to stock cartons of milk at Sakanoshita. This is the most talkative Akaashi has heard his high school friend in quite some time. Eventually, it registers that Kenma is asking him something. Offhandedly, Akaashi makes a small sound of agreeance. He thinks theyâre talking about Kurooâs upcoming show.
âAkaashi.â
âYes?â Akaashi hums in response.
âYouâre not listening.â
He sputters into the phone in protest- despite knowing damn well he hadnât a clue what Kenma just asked him.
âI just asked if you like Kurooâs new single.â
âAnd?â
âAnd you said yes.â
âSo? I could have liked it.â
âAkaashi. The only things you hate more than rap are unnecessary sequels and the Harry Potter books.â
âOh,â Akaashi breathes out, taking a short break from his task and running his fingers through his hair. There is a pause as Kenma expectedly waits for an explanation.
âYou know Iâm at work.â
âWe talk all the time when youâre at the store. Youâve been spacing out lately. itâs not like you.â
âItâs not like you to say something.â
âYeah. Just worried about you.â
âIâm sorry Ken. I have a major deadline coming up,â Akaashi says offhandedly.
âI get it.â He knows Kenma does. His 23-year-old best friend has amassed quite a demanding following from his youtube and Livestream career. He promises content just about every other day.
âJust... uh. Try to get some sleep.â Akaashi wrinkles his nose.
âItâs weird to hear you give advice. Especially about sleep. Stop it.â
âYouâre right. Anyway, if you need a break, I was planning on surprising Shou with tickets to the Tokyo show. I know itâs not your thing... Itâs not exactly mine either. But itâs Kurooâs first tour with another rapper- Hinataâs idol or something. I figured that would be a good gift for his birthday. You should be there. You know how Shouyo gets- heâll want you there.â
Heâs right. While he hasnât known Hinata-san as long as Kenma has, the 20-year-old kid has taken quite a liking to him. Akaashi signs for the fourth time this call. Dammit Kenma, he thinks. The guy knows full and well no one can say no to Hinata.
âNo.â
ââKay. It's next Friday.â
âSorry, Kozume,â Akaashi sighs.
âWe have front row seats. Do you know how much someone would pay for these tickets?â
The older boy grits his teeth. If Kenma knows anything about his friend- itâs that heâs stingy with money.
âYou already bought them?â
âOf course I did. Well, itâs Kuroo, so not really, but-â
âFind someone else, Ken. I have a lot of work to do. Iâm sure Tsukishima wouldnât mind going, he likes rap.â
â...Weâre talking about Shouâs birthday, Akaashi. Not his worst nightmare.â
Akaashi grunts in response. Kenma tries a new angle.
âYou know, I think you might like this other artist. I guess he used to be gunning for Japanâs Olympic team. Started getting good about two years after you quit so I donât think youâd know him. Then he injured his knee and couldnât play anymore, turned to music.â
âYou know I donât care for volleyball anymore,â Akaashi says flatly. Like heâs done a hundred times. He picks up another carton.
âYeah. Think about it. For Shou. Gotta stream. See you Kaashi."
âBye, Ken.â
Akaashi rubs his temples, already knowing the outcome of this situation. He knows Kenmaâs only pressing him so much because he hates crowds. And Hinata would be too starstruck to help if something happenedâŚ
It takes more time than heâd like to admit before he notices the pool of milk forming in his lap.
âDammit, dammit.â He mutters under his breath.
âYou alright there, Keiji? Youâve been kinda zoning it all day,â his supervisor, Sugawara, offers him a wide grin and some napkins.
âOh, yes, Iâm fine, Sugawara-san. My apologies.â Akaashi begins patting himself dry.
âNo problem, looks like that carton had a hole in the bottom. Thatâs why we have aprons!â Sugawara says cheerily. âAnd how many times do I have to tell you, call me Suga.â
But thatâs what Daichi calls you, Akaashi thinks to himself dejectedly.
âRight. Sorry, Suga.â It even tastes weird in his mouth.
âHave a break, âkay, Akaashi?â Sugawara helps him to his feet. Akaashi offers a small bow.
Itâd be much easier to hate his ex-boyfriendâs partner/new manager if he wasnât so damn nice.
âYes. Thank you very much.â
Akaashi sleeps through his lunch and a little into his shift. He wipes his eyes and adjusts his glasses, then peers at his watch.
âShit.â He rushes back into the store from his âbedâ in the storage room (two fifty pound rice bags), tying his blue apron as he goes.
ââMorning, sleeping beauty. Welcome to the real world. I need a bagger on 3,â his younger co-worker, Tsukishima, chirps. Akaashi nods and hurries over.
âHello, maâam. Did you find everything you were looking for today?â
Itâs around five when Akaashi ends his shift. Sugawara, the bastard, let him out thirty minutes early. He relishes in his commute- the one hour in his day he gets to sit and think about nothing. He puts his headphones on and thumbs his mp3 player. When Akaashiâs finger involuntarily stops him at a particular track, heâs launched into a memory of two winters ago.
âMP3 player, wow. You donât, uh, you donât see those much anymore.â
Akaashi looked up from the floor of the subway and pulled his earbuds out, shocked to be met with the eyes of a tan, well built police officer settling into the seat across from him.
âOh sorry, officer, um, what was that?â
The man, probably just a year older than him, Akaashi guessed, looked down at his uniform as if he was surprised to be in it. Then, he chuckled, albeit quite loudly. Akaashi, wildly confused, gave the brunette man a half-smile, nudging his glasses up further on his nose.
âOh, whew. Sorry, sorry, I just got my badge today- never been called âofficerâ before. Sounds so official.â Akaashi gave him a small, breathy laugh.
âAnyway, I just said you donât see those a lot nowadays- the MP3 player, I mean,â The policeman gestured to Akaashiâs lap.
âOh, right. Just had it since I was a teenager. Cheaper than streaming services, kinda.â
âI donât know about that. Guess it depends on what you have on it.â
Akaashi smiled, "Yeah, yeah. I guess it does.â
âOh, what, youâre just going to leave me in suspense?â
âTake a look for yourself,â Akaashi smirked, throwing the man his device, âJust donât steal it.â That comment prompted a proper guffaw from the officer.
âNo promises⌠Letâs see here⌠Well, well, well, Glasses likes some oldies, Al Green, Etta James. Impressive. You were last listening to âYou Send Meâ- Sam Cooke.â
âItâs a classic,â Akaashi pointed out.
âThat it is,â The man tossed the MP3 back to him. There was a brief silence before,
âDarling youuu send me. Honest you do, honest you do, honest you do, whoooooaaaa. You thrill me,â The stocky passenger sang roughly, staring at the ceiling. Akaashi blushed fiercely, embarrassed at his companyâs sudden outburst. The man opened his mouth to sing more but was interrupted by Akaashi nudging him with his foot. The officer feigned shock.
âStop that.â
âAm I a bad singer? Iâm offended, Glasses, really.â
âYou just canât do it in public.â
âIâm a police officer, remember? I can do whatever I want.â
âOh, is that how that works?â
âIt is, actually. Pretty handy.â The man continued to the next verse, now choosing to whistle. He then stopped for a moment and looked Akaashi in the eyes.
âItâs Daichi. Officer Daichi, to you.â
Akaashi gave him a small grin.
âAkaashi. Citizen Akaashi. Not Glasses.â
âDamn, and I really thought I got that one.â

Baby Fever
@ainu, Claudia and I were talking about Kagehina and cats, and thus this silly thing was born. Thanks for always giving me inspiration, I love you guys <3
(Cat name by Ainu)
******** Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â ********
Kageyama wasnât sure how he ended up there, with the smell of way too many animals in much too small a space filling his nostrils as Hinata looked around the room with wonder in his eyes. Except, he did know. He knew exactly how it happened, he was just baffled at how he let it get this far.
It had been several nights ago, when Hinata stretched across the couch and plopped his head in Kageyamaâs lap, forcing him to move the sports magazine he was reading out of the way so he could pout up at him. The pout was met with a frown, which made a smile tug at Hinataâs lips, but he pushed it away.
âTobiooooo,â he whined, adding puppy dog eyes to the expression.
âYour head is digging into my hip,â he answered, pretending to be uninterested.
âOh, sorry.â Hinata scooted down, resting his head on the soft part of Kageyamaâs thigh before looking back up. âTobiooooo! I want a baby.â
Kageyama froze, going rigid as his face turned red hot. âYou what?â
âI want a baby,â Hinata repeated, his pout spreading into a wide grin. âA cute chubby one that we can dress up in tiny volleyball clothes and spoil rotten. What do you think?â
âShou,â Kageyama sputtered, suddenly feeling like some huge responsibility was weighing on his shoulders. A baby? He could barely take care of himself, and his mom still made monthly trips to make sure their fridge was full and the two of them hadnât been crushed under a tower of unwashed clothes. âWe...we arenât even married. We can barely afford rent. Youâre still in school. I work at a gym!â
âBut I really want one,â he continued, rolling toward Kageyama to bury his face in his stomach. âWonât our love be enough to support us?â
âNot when we need diapers and baby food and doctor's visits and cribs and,â Kageyama paused, stress crashing over him about how he would manage to provide for his dumb boyfriend and their nonexistent child. âWe canât. Thereâs no way. Shou weâre only 25 for fuckâs sake.â
âFine, no baby,â Hinata mumbled against his shirt. âIâll just wallow in sadness until the day I can love a tiny human and teach them all of my volleyball wisdom. But until then Iâll need something to fill the void in my heart. I think a kitten will do the job.â
Kageyama sighed a breath of relief. A kitten he could do. A kitten is manageable. And kibble and litter are much less expensive than formula and baby clothes.
âFine.â He absentmindedly let his hand fall down to Hinataâs hair, running his fingers through that fiery orange that never burns. âWe can go to a shelter this weekend.â
âGreat!â Hinata rolled back over, beaming up at Kageyama as he pulled his phone from his pocket. âLook at this cute food and water bowl set I found, it has little fish on the sides. And this cat tree! Itâs three levels, and there are feathers hanging from the top and a built in scratching post! And-,â
âWait a minute,â Kageyama said, realization dawning on him. âYou never wanted a baby, did you? You wanted a kitten all along and knew Iâd say no.â
âNo take backs, you already said yes!â
âYou little bastard.â
Hinata blew a kiss upwards, but Kageyama just glared, not wanting to accept his defeat but knowing heâd lost. âI learned it from some boring show about marketing my mom was watching when I visited. Itâs called door in the face technique. You start with something big, knowing itâll get turned down, and then you give your real offer and theyâre more likely to say yes. And it worked!â
âYeah, whatever. Donât get used to it, Iâm onto you now,â he mumbled, reaching for his magazine.
âSure, babe. Whatever you say.â
Hinata had spent the rest of the night picking out collars and toys for the kitten and shoving his phone in Kageyamaâs face to gush about how cute they were. Eventually he had to wrestle the phone away to keep him from spending their food budget on a pink and gold self cleaning litter box.
On the drive to the shelter saturday morning Hinata was practically bouncing out of his seat, which wasnât that much more distracting than his usual fidgeting, but enough to make Kageyama worry it was a driving hazard. As soon as the car was parked Hinata flew out, bounding up the concrete steps and through the shelter door. Kageyama followed, making sure to lock the car and taking the steps at a slower pace, and met up with Hinata behind a door that said plainly: âCat Room.â
âThereâs so many!â Hinata looked around amidst the roaring meows, frozen in place as he tried to choose where to start. He settled on the loudest one, a little black kitten with white sock paws that was practically screaming through the bars of his cage. Kageyama wondered how so much noise could come out of such a small creature. Hinata reached a hand out to the kitten, sticking his fingers through the bars despite the clear âDo not put hands in cageâ sign hanging above it, and quickly drew it back as the kitten latched on with clawed sock paws and shoved it into his mouth made of razors.
âOw! Bad kitty!â Hinata frowned down at the thin line of blood forming on his finger. âTobio! He cut me.â
âRead the sign, dumbass,â Kageyama answered, pointing at the paper. âThey put that there for a reason. Cats are evil.â
âThey are not!â Hinata gasped, looking offended. âTheyâre sweet little angels.â
âTheyâre killing machines, urged on by their anger over the fact that theyâre too small to kill a human.â
âDonât listen to him,â Hinata said, turning back to the cages but keeping his fingers to himself. âHeâs just grumpy because he thinks animals donât like him.â
That was true, but Kageyama wouldnât admit it out loud. He never had a pet growing up, and every time heâd been introduced to a friendâs pet they seemed nonchalant towards him, usually ignoring him and going about their business. He even tried to approach stray cats around town that he had seen otherâs feed, but they always flattened their ears and ran away. He wasnât sure what he did wrong, or if it was just some presence he had that scared animals off, but heâd given up on trying to make them like him years ago.
Unsure of what he planned to achieve, he walked up to one of the cages, staring down at an older tabby with a soft face and sagging belly that showed sheâd had multiple litters of kittens. Thinking of her stuck in there, all alone and without her babies, tugged at Kageyamaâs heartstrings. He let out an exhale before nervously lifting his hand to the bars where she could sniff at his fingers but he could pull back quickly if she went on the attack. She was careful not to touch him with her nose as she smelled him curiously, and for a moment Kageyama thought she might actually let him pet her, but before he could attempt it she turned, sticking her tail straight up in the air as she made her way to the very back of the cage and flopped down.
âOh, whatever,â he mumbled, sticking his tongue out at the cat and feeling dumb for acting so childish. âI didnât want to pet you anyway.â
He sulked back toward the door, resting his back against the frame and shoving his hands in his pockets. He figured he might as well just wait for Hinata to pick, itâd be his cat anyway. It wouldnât want anything to do with Kageyama.
He watched as Hinata darted around the room, cooing and clucking his tongue at different cats, all of which came up to the bars to greet him. Some let him gently rub their heads and some attempted to chew his fingers off, but all of them interacted with him somehow. Even the momma tabby came back to the bars when Hinata peered in at her, and Kageyama tried to ignore the sad bit of jealousy that climbed up his throat as she rubbed her cheek across his outstretched finger.
This is fine, he thought, as long as it makes Hinata happy I donât need the cat to like me too.
Hinata knelt before one of the cages close to the floor, saying something about âwhat a pretty babyâ to a disgruntled looking ball of gray fluff inside, and just above his head, Kageyama locked eyes with a pair of round blue eyes. The cat just stared at him, sitting patiently as if daring him to come over and talk to it. So he did. What did he have to lose?
The cat, a tiny orange thing with thick downy fur, sat just far enough away from the bars that Kageyamaâs fingers couldnât reach it, watching silently as he tried. It cocked its head to the side, as if it was interested in him but not quite sure if he was safe.
âOh, thatâs a pretty one,â Hinata said beside him, startling Kageyama as he quickly pulled his hand back. âHere kitty kitty.â
The cat immediately perked up when Hinata appeared, letting out a soft mew and pressing her face against the bars. Hinata rubbed his finger on the bridge of her nose and she started to purr.
âI think she likes you,â Kageyama said, checking the tag on her cage for the gender.
âIsn't she gorgeous, Tobio?â Hinata asked, rubbing at her chin as she flopped down and rolled over, stretching her paws out past the cage bars. âLook, she has your eyes!â
As if on cue the cat looked up at him, blue meeting blue. Kageyama ignored the sudden bit of affection he felt for the kitten, knowing it would only hurt him later. âYeah, well, she has your hair,â he said, watching as the cat meowed loudly at Hinata, standing back up and trying to force her face through the bars to get closer to him and almost getting stuck. âAnd your stupidity.â
âThen itâs destiny!â Hinata turned, grabbing Kageyamaâs hand and smiling wide. âSheâs part me and part you. Sheâs our baby!â
âDonât say weird shit, Shou,â Kageyama chided, looking back at the cat who paused her escape attempts to stare at him again. âItâs just a cat.â
âA perfect cat,â he continued. âLetâs take her home.â
âAre you sure thatâs the one you want?â
Again with perfect timing, the cat reached out and latched a claw into Hinataâs shirt, meowing sadly at him as if she was afraid heâd leave her. He gently removed her claw and held her paw in his hand. âYeah, Iâm sure.â
Kageyama called for an employee who came to transfer the cat into a cardboard travel box. As soon as the cage door was open the cat practically leapt at Hinata, landing in his arms as he frantically tried not to drop her. It took a full five minutes to get her off of Hinata and into the box, meowing loudly in protest the entire time.
She continued to yell at them until they were in the car and Hinata impatiently opened the box.
âHey, dumbass! Donât open that in here!â Kageyama called, thoughts of cats running under brake pedals and cars spinning out in fiery death spirals flashing in his mind.
âDonât worry, sheâll behave. Wonât you?â The cat hopped easily out of the box and onto Hinataâs shoulder, nuzzling his neck and making him giggle. âAh, your nose is cold!â
âJust keep a grip on her.â
âWhatâre we gonna call her, Tobio?â
Kageyama thought of all the cat names he knew, which wasnât many.
âUh, Fluffy? Whiskers? Those are cat names, yeah?â
âBoo,â Hinata pouted. âThose are so boring. She needs a unique name. Something super cool, like Spike!â
âWhy would you name her Spike? Tosses are better.â
âYou want to name the cat Toss?â
âSure, why not.â
âBecause it sounds ridiculous, thatâs why not,â Hinata told him, moving the box to the floorboard and moving the cat to his lap where she curled up and purred loudly. âBesides, if weâre gonna name her after something you do why donât we just call her Leaving-Wet-Towels-On-The-Bathroom-Floor?â
âWell if we name her after stuff you do we can call just her Coercing-My-Boyfriend-Into-Buying-Me-A-Kitten.â
âLetâs name her after something we both love,â Hinata said, waving away the faux argument. âWhatâs something you love?â
âYou.â
âOh, shut up, this is serious,â Hinata said, trying to play off the way the answer made his cheeks tinge pink. Kageyama smiled to himself. Hinata was so cute when he was caught off guard.
âFine. Uh, volleyball, milk, those little oddly shaped m&ms that end up in the bag sometimes and are way more candy shell than chocolate.â
âThose are terrible names,â Hinata giggled, his hand moving softly over the lightly dozing kitten.
âMy turn. I love spiking, but you already shot that one down, eating cookie dough, when you get to the subway really early and the seats are still cold and it feels like the world is still sleeping.â
âShou, you canât name a cat after a feeling. Think of one word things.â
âOkay, okay. I love meatbuns.â
âMe too,â Kageyama said, turning to look at Hinata and raising an eyebrow as if to ask âis that it?â
âNikupan,â Hinata said, smiling down at the cat. âWe can all her Niku for short.â
âWell, itâs unique.â
âThen itâs perfect. Weâre gonna take such good care of you, Niku.â
***
As Kageyama expected, Niku could not care less about him. He tried for a while, buying her special treats and toys and giving them to her when Hinata wasnât home, but she always ignored him and eventually he gave up. She slept in their bed but always curled up near Hinataâs feet where Kageyama couldnât reach her. And when Hinata was home she was glued to his side. They were  inseparable, and even though it hurt him a little he was  just glad that Niku made Hinata happy.
Though, she didnât just love Hinata. When their friends and family came over she warmed up quickly to them too. Everyone was enamored with her, laughing as she played with bits of string or meowed loudly at them, demanding to be picked up.
But that was all fine, Kageyama decided. They didnât have to get along. Heâd leave her alone, and sheâd keep on avoiding him, and everything would be fine.
That is, until Hinata went to visit his mom and sister for a weekend, and Kageyama couldnât take off of work to accompany him, leaving him and Niku home alone for two days. It was longer than theyâd ever spent together without Hinata, and Kageyama would be lying if he said he wasnât afraid of how it would go.
The first day was fine. He didnât see her at all, no tuft of orange fur sticking out from under the couch or flash of fire as she disappeared around a corner. The only way he knew she was even there was the steadily emptying food bowl in the kitchen. That night he rolled over in his sleep, reaching for Hinata and instead getting a handful of cat, eyes flying open to find Niku perched precariously on the edge of the bed where she probably thought Kageyama couldnât reach her. She was gone faster than he could pull his hand back, retreating out of the room and down the hall, clearly betrayed by his audacity.
The next morning was the same. No sign of Niku anywhere. Kageyama sighed, filling her food and water bowls, and left for work.
That evening, Kageyamaâs heart sank as he unlocked the door and stepped into the kitchen, his eyes immediately falling to Nikuâs food bowl, which was completely untouched.
âOh no,â he whispered, immediately pulling open cabinets and hoping she got herself stuck somewhere in the house. âKitty kitty! Niku, kitty, where are you?â He crawled around the house, searching under every piece of furniture and in every nook and cranny he could think of. Normally he would feel like an idiot crawling around and meowing, but all he could see was a little orange kitten in the belly of some wild animal and Hinata telling him how much he hated him for letting his best friend get out.
The only place left to to check was the bedroom, but by that point Kageyamaâs heart was in his stomach, and it sank even further when he saw the little hole ripped in the screen of the window above the dresser. âOh shit,â he breathed, running to the window and looking out. All he saw was the alley between their building and the one beside it, shadows growing across it as the sun began to set, and a rather large stray dog sniffing around a dumpster. He knew heâd never be able to find her without Hinataâs help, and Hinata would be furious and probably break up with him when he found out.
âNiku?â He yelled, making an old woman walking by the mouth of the alley stop at stare at him, but he didnât care. There was a high pitched meow from below, so soft he almost missed it, sending a rush of adrenaline through his veins. âNiku!â
The meow caught the attention of the stray dog, causing it to rush over and start barking at the dumpster and pawing beneath it, sniffing and snarling.
âHey! Leave her alone you dumbass dog!â The dog paid no attention to Kageyama, too occupied by the kitten cries that were coming from the dumpster. Suddenly remembering that his legs worked, Kageyama turned and sprinted from the bedroom and back out the front door. He took the stairs three at a time, praying that heâd make it in time to save Niku, and it wasnât until he skid to a stop halfway down the alley that he realized he had no idea how to scare the dog off.
From this angle he could see the little orange cat under the dumpster backed up against the building, the dogâs paws inches away from her. She was puffed up twice her size and hissing as intimidatingly as she could, but the dog was unphased.
âDammit,â Kageyama hissed, searching the ground for something he could use to scare the dog. His eyes landed on a rusted metal baking tray and the broken handle of a baseball bat, which he scooped up and continued running toward the dog.
âHey dumbass!â He yelled, banging the bat against the tray as hard as he could. The sound reverberated between the buildings, making the dog stop to look up at him. âGo eat someone elseâs cat!â As he got closer the dogâs eyes went wide, the sound growing bigger and louder, and it turned to scamper back the way it came.
Without hesitating Kageyama dropped to his knees beside the dumpster, calling out to Niku. He figured she wouldnât budge, and heâd have to stay in that alley with her until Hinata got home and could coax her out, but the second those fearful blue eyes met his he was bombarded by a ball of fluff. Her claws dug through his shirt and into his chest, but he didnât care. She was safe.
âItâs okay, little kitty,â he whispered, standing up and clutching her to his chest as she shivered. âYouâre safe now.â
Niku stayed latched to him as they made their way back to the apartment, and still wouldnât let go as Kageyama shut the heavy window. He tried to get her to eat but she would just meow in protest until he picked her back up. Finally, he gave up and went to bed, letting her curl up and sleep on his chest, and, for the first time, Kageyama felt Niku purr.
Kageyama woke up late that night to the sound of Hinataâs keys in the door. He tried to creep silently into the bedroom, but froze when Kageyama flipped on the lamp.
âHey, did I wake y-,â he froze, eyes going wide as he saw the ball of orange sleeping soundly on Kageyamaâs chest. âTobio! She likes you!â
âShhh, donât wake her. As soon as she sees you sheâll forget all about me again,â Kageyama smiled, gently petting Niku.
Hinata kicked off his shoes and changed his clothes before crawling into bed beside the pair. He laid his head on Kageyamaâs shoulder, letting their fingers intertwine in the catâs fur. âLooks like you guys had quite a weekend. Whatâd you get up to?â
âLetâs just say we had an adventure.â
âBoo, Tobio, no fair,â Hinata pouted.
âI saved her from a hungry dog that tried to swallow her whole.â
Hinata snorted. âYeah, sure. Whatever you say. If you donât want to tell me your cat charming secrets itâs fine.â
Hinata snuggled closer and Kageyama switched the lamp off, letting himself fall back asleep. Before it came, in that space between waking and sleeping that both exists and doesnât, he figured he was happy with his little family, and after years of waiting, he was glad that Niku was the first animal to accept him, just like Hinata was the first boy to love him. Finally, everything in his life felt perfect.

Niku was slightly inspired by my wild kitty Ian, who is constantly causing trouble but is just too cute to stay mad at. You can find more of my cat pics here, or follow me on instagram!Â

Kagehina Day 4
((A VERY late day 4...I didnât want to half-ass this one so I took extra time on it. Iâll try to have both day 5 & 6 later on today as itâs now Friday here. RIP my always behind self))
Title: As Long As Youâll Let Me
Prompt: Favorite AU/Kisses
Rating: T
Summary: Itâs the last day of summer holidays and the couple is stuck inside while Kageyama finishes his summer homework. It doesnât take long for Hinata to get antsy and started begging for attention. A bit annoyed with his boyfriend, Kageyama sends him out on an errand, promising kisses when returns. (This one get a bit angsty...so youâre warned)
It was the last day of their summer break and there was a tense silence in the room. Okay, maybe not for Kageyama, but Hinata was tense. They were going back school after today and they were going to be busy. They should be spending it outside or on a date or something. The last day and Kageyama was sitting beside him on his bed, doing school work. No part of him was even touching Hinata. Just like a rock breaking the surface of a lake, Hinata promptly, and loudly, broke the silence. âTobiooooo.â Hinata whined, stretching himself across his lap, scattering all of Kageyamaâs papers.
âShoyo! Iâm in the middle of something, dumbass!â Kageyama tried to push him off, but was completely unsuccessful. Hinata wrapped his arms around Kageyamaâs hips, hanging on for dear life.
âTobio, pay attention to me. Come on, this our last day of freedom. The least you can do is spend right now with me.â
âI told you to wait. If I donât do my summer homework now, Iâll be screwed. Iâm almost done.â
âYou said that twenty minutes ago, canât you just finish it later?â Hinata pouted up at him, trying to make his lips as appealing as possible.
âAnd I told you not come over until 4. You got here at 3, you loser.â Kageyama grumbled, but his resolve was slipping a little. Hinata was too cute sometimes, and Kageyama couldnât resist him for much longer, and Hinata fucking knew it.
       âI got excited.â
âSo, unlike you.â Kageyama deadpanned. âWhy donât you go to the convenience store and get us ice cream or drinks?â He pulled his wallet out of pocket, with great difficultly since Hinata had not loosened his grip one bit. Out of spite, he dropped it on Hinataâs face. âIâll be done by the time you get back, dumbass. If you keep distracting me, this will only take longer.â
âOw. Youâre so mean.â Hinata was forced to let go to grab the wallet and he reluctantly sat up. âKiss me before I go.â
âYouâre such a pain.â Kageyama leaned in but stopped short, âno. Iâll reward you after your errand, not before.â
âMaybe I wonât go then.â Hinata crossed his arms and pouted like a child who hadnât got their way. He tried to close the space between them, but Kageyama clapped his hand over Hinataâs lips, splaying his fingers over his face.
âNo kisses then.â Kageyama glared at him, not backing down one bit, although he did let go of his face. Smirking, he bent over to pick up his scattered papers.
âThen Iâll just kiss your cheek instead.â Hinata leaned in, but his lips own met a waxy, paper material. He opened his eyes and saw he was kissing Kageyamaâs blue history folder. It had gone up as a barrier in between them. Hinata didnât have to see Kageyamaâs face to know he was stifling his laughter with a giant smirk on his face.
âI said no. Go little errand boy.â
       âI hate you.â
âItâs even my treat, you baby.â
âThatâs not the point! I want my hello and goodbye kisses from you!â
âYouâre coming right back. Donât be so dramatic. Itâs exhausting.â Kageyama rolled his eyes, âbesides youâre forgetting that Iâm giving you kisses when you get back.â
âUghâŚfine!â Hinata groaned loudly and got off the bed as slowly as possible, glaring at Kageyama the entire time.
âWhy arenât you doing your homework last minute anyway? Donât tell me youâre being a dumbass and not doing it.â
âI did it last week with Yama and Tsukki. We invited you, remember?â Hinata flatten his hair against head, and put on his best uninterested Kageyama face. ââIâll do it later, weâve got plenty of time.â Remember you said that?â
âI keep forgetting that Saltyshima lets you study with them now that you and Freckles are friends.â
âYou could call them by their real names, you know.â
âNah. Now go get the snacks.â Kageyama waved him off, reminding him that he did not forgot them.
âFine. You better give me a bunch of kisses when I come back.â
Kageyama purposefully ignored him and was pretending to focus on his work. Hinata rolled his eyes and blew, very sarcastic, kisses at the top of Kageyamaâs head. âLove you too, rude-y-yamaâ
It only took Kageyama another 30 minutes to finish his homework. The convenience store was close by and Hinata had his bike so he should be back soon. Kageyama sent him a quick text to tell him to hurry up and then started playing a random game on his phone.
He looked at his clock a bit later, 45 minutes since Hinata had left. Maybe there was just a long line or something.
An hour had passed and Kageyama started to worry. He hurriedly dialed Hinataâs number, but the phone only rang once before it went to voice mail. Now he was really worried. Hinata wouldnât have turned his phone off and he never ignored Kageyama phone calls. Even when they were in fight or annoyed at each other, Hinata always picked up the phone. In those instances, Hinata would tell him he was not talking to Kageyama and then hang up. On rare occasions, he absolutely couldnât answer a call, he would at least send a text. This was bad. Kageyama felt in the pit of stomach and dread was growing inside him like a weed. Prickly and completely unwanted. He was about to get up to go search for Hinata when he ran into his mother in the doorway.
Her face was pale and Kageyamaâs stomach dropped. âTobio, honey, I just got off the phone with Shoyoâs mother. He was on his way back here from the store. Someone ran a red light and hit him while he was crossing the street on his bike.â
Kageyama dropped his phone and felt ice cold and burning hot at the same time. Heâd been so mean to HinataâŚwhat if that was the last timeâŚ? NO. I canât think about that right now. âI-is he going to be all right?â
âThey donât know yet. Iâll drive you to hospital, letâs go.â Kageyama nodded numbly and followed after her like a zombie. They were silent on the way the hospital, but Kageyamaâs head was anything but quiet. This was all his fault. He was a bit frustrated with the way Hinata had been pestering him. He forced him to go to the store. He refused to kiss him.
Kageyamaâs mother kept giving him worried glances, but didnât say anything. She could tell Kageyama was still processing everything. She also knew that Hinata was Kageyamaâs first friend that cared about him outside of his volleyball skills. Hinata meant the world to him and she was so happy for her son when the two of had started dating. Hinata seemed to bring out the best in her son. Her heart was breaking for him, but from the look on his face, he didnât even register that she was next to him.
Kageyamaâs fists were clenched so tensely and tightly in his lap that he was sure his nails were leaving half-moon indents in his palms. Every breath he took was shallow and shuddering. His world was collapsing in on him and there was nothing he could do about it. He had very few friends because of his attitude, but that never mattered to him. Hinata had been different. He was never just his friend. Hinata took all of his anger, frustration, insults and awkward praises and gave them right back to him. Never did Hinata accept other peopleâs opinions of him. He made his own. He accepted all of Kageyamaâs personality and loved him. Kageyama wasnât sure he was ever going to find that again if something happened to Hinata.
NO. Stop that! I canât think like that. Hinata would stay positive. Heâs so damn good at that.
Kageyama barely registered it when the pulled up to the hospital. He relied on his muscle memory and followed his mother in like he was on autopilot. He had completely shut down. His mother went over to talk with Mrs. Hinata, but he didnât try to listen in. Yes, he did want to know Hinataâs state, but he was too numb. He got Hinata into this, he didnât deserve to know.
âTobio?â Hinataâs mom sat down in the chair next to him. âIâm so glad youâre here. Heâll need you when he wakes up. I know youâre blaming yourself right now, but itâs not your fault. He wonât see it that way either. I promise.â
Hinataâs mother was just like him, a bright ray of sunshine and positivity. Kageyama hadnât even thought about what Hinata would say to him. What if he did blame Kageyama for the accident? What if he cast Kageyama out of his life? Kageyama loved being a setter so much more when he was setting for Hinata. He couldnât bare it if they were at odds. He didnât want to break up, far from it. Deep down, he was desperate and needy for Hinata. Until the day Hinata decided to part ways, Kageyama would cling to his side. Everyone would say the opposite, that Hinata was the clingy one. That without Kageyama, Hinata wouldnât that great of a volleyball player, but it was really the other way around. Kageyama didnât discount his talent as a setter, but he wouldnât have come this far without Hinata.
âThe doctors just spoke with us before you got here. Shoyo is going to be fine. Heâs just in surgery right now. Itâs minor, just to fix a fracture in his leg. Everything else is pretty minor as well, just cuts in scrapes, but he does have a pretty severe concussion. Our Shoyo got lucky.â She tried to be encouraging and gave a little smile. She, like his mother, was very supportive of their relationship. She had treated Kageyama like family since day one. She knew Hinataâs feelings probably before Hinata even did. Mrs. Hinata swallowed thickly before continuing. This was the start of the bad news. Â
âHeâll probably miss the first week of schoolâŚand be out of volleyball for a while.â It was then that Mrs. Hinataâs voice grew weaker and her tone was dripping with despair.
He was alive, but they both knew volleyball was Hinataâs world. No one loved volleyball as much as Hinata. Except for maybe Kageyama, but he only played to such extremes when practicing with Hinata. Everything was always better when they were together. No understood him the way Hinata did and he wouldnât want them to. Karasuno were just coming off championship, all eyes were going to be on them this year. They couldnât afford to lose their best decoy. Tanaka would kill him when he found out. He was still adjusting the captain position as it is.
Kageyama got up and stalked off down a random hallway. He needed to be alone for a bit. Everything was messed up. Kageyama walked until he hit a dead end, staring down a shitty coffee machine and sparse vending machine. A frustrated, heartbroken scream ripped its way out of Kageyamaâs throat. He slammed his fist in the wall, not hard enough to do damage to it, but to at least feel it. Clenching his teeth together, he tried to stop the tears that threatened to spill over, but the pain demanded to be felt. Kageyama slid down against the wall and curled in on himself, trying to take up as little space as possible. Once the tears and sobs started, they were impossible to stop. It was like opening flood gates or a raging storm, it would pour until it was over.
ShoyoâŚFUCK! What do I even say to you? I will never let you fucking leave again without a kiss. How could I be so stupid? I canât be a good senpai to the new first years without you. Iâll blow up at everyone. Youâll probably miss out on half the season because of me. What if your leg doesnât heal right and you canât jump in the same way? âŚwhat if you donât want anything to do with me after this? Iâm so selfish, that would be the worst thing in all of that. I knowâŚI know without you Iâm just a setter with a shitty attitude. I thought maybe weâd go to university together or something.
The longer Kageyama stewed in his state of despair, the more irrational his thoughts became. He feared more than anything about regressing to the person he used to be in middle school. The one whoâs whole team abandoned. He owed everything to Karasuno. To Hinata.
âTobio. Oh, there you are. Iâve been looking all over for you.â
Kageyama looked up at the sound of his motherâs voice. The tears had long since dried on his face, but his eyes were still puffy and red. âI needed to be alone.â Kageyamaâs voice came out raspy and barely more than a whisper.
âI know. Heâs okay, honey. Heâs asking for you.â
Kageyama nodded and slowly stood up, following after his mother. His stride was slow and jumpy, as if he was ready to run the minute Hinata rejected him. He froze in the door way the moment his eyes landed on Hinata. His leg was wrapped in a white cast that extended from his mid-thigh to cover his whole foot. Only his toes were visible. His arms were covered in bruises and random stark white bandages, stained slightly with bright red blood. Hinata looked a bit better than he anticipated, but not by much. Kageyama barely registered his mother giving his arm a reassuring squeeze before leaving them alone.
Hinata smiled at him the minute their eyes connected. It made Kageyamaâs heart ache in his chest. He didnât deserve to be looked at like that. âTobio~ why are you standing all the way over there? Donât I deserve my reward kisses? I didnât finish the errand, butââ
âDonât fuck with me. Arenât you mad at me? This is my fault!â Kageyama didnât want to yell at Hinata. It was the last thing his beautiful, sunny boyfriend deserved, but he couldnât help it. There was just no way Hinata wouldnât hate him.
Hinata tilted his head in the way he always did when he was confused. The way that Kageyama found so endearing. âWhat? Itâs not like you ran me over with a car. I came over before I was supposed to. I was bothering you. Maybe you could have been nicer,â he paused to stick his tongue out at Kageyama, âbut Iâm not mad.â
âBut you wouldnât have gone to the store if I hadnât made you!â Kageyama ran his fingers through his hair, completely exasperated at Hinataâs responses. âYou broke your leg, dumbass. Your LEG! The main part of your volleyball game. Youâll be out of volleyball for weeks!â
Hinata deflated and nodded sullenly. âUgh. Donât remind me! But, Iâll be able to make a full recovery with physical therapy.â Hinata pouted at him, âIâm injured, Tobi, please come here.â He patted the bed, beckoning him over with his eyes.
Kageyama sighed and finally gave in and crept over to the bed. He sat perched on the edge, still not fully relaxed or convinced that he should be forgiven so easily. âSho. Iâm so sorry.â Kageyama mumbled, still too afraid to face his boyfriend.
âTobi, itâs not your fault. Itâs not my fault. Itâs the asshole, who ran a red lightâs fault.â Hinata reached over and took Kageyamaâs hand. He laced their fingers together and pressed Kageyamaâs up to his lips kissing them gently. âI was so scared and do you know what I thought before I passed out?â He waited and Kageyama slowly shook his head. âHow melted your ice cream would be when I got it back to you.â
       âYou did not.â
âI did. You were working so hard on your summer homework despite me distracting you. I just wanted your attention. I always want your attention, Tobio.â Hinata yanked a bit on Kageyamaâs arm, trying to get him to turn around. âNow will you look at me? You had to have finished your homework by now.â
Kageyama let out a breath through his nose that was halfway between a sigh of relief and a laugh. Finally, he turned around and looked Hinata in the eye. âI love you, dumbass. I donât know why youâre not mad at me, but Iâll take it.â
       âI love you. Thatâs why.â
âYou do.â Kageyama leaned in and gave Hinata a slow, gentle kiss.
âMore. I deserve so much more than that.â
âSo needy.â Kageyama teased but leaned in again for a deeper, slightly desperate kiss. Hinata placed a hand on Kageyamaâs face and stroked his cheek as they kissed. It was perfect and Kageyama didnât like it at all. He loved it. Iâll never be able to give you enough kisses for what you deserve, but I can try. Iâll kiss your dumb, soft lips as long as youâll let me.
Hinata pulled away first and stared at Kageyama, still cupping his face. âYou better come over every day after school the days that Iâm absent.â
       âFine.â
âWill you be the first to sign my cast?â Hinata nodded to the brand-new pack of permanent markers on the bedside table. âMom bought them.â
Kageyama smiled and pulled the blue marker out of the pack. It was Hinataâs favorite color and he knew Hinata would appreciate it. It was sappy and stupid, but Kageyama knew Hinataâs favorite color was blue because of his eyes. It was stupid and cheesy, but then again Kageyamaâs favorite color was orange because of Hinataâs hair. He didnât even hesitate before he wrote it. As long as Iâm here youâre invincibleâŚdumbass. It made Hinata laugh a little and Kageyama couldnât help but smile as he signed his name underneath.
âMy mom will be upset that you wrote a swear on my cast.â
âI had to. Itâs kind of our thing now.â
Hinata rolled his eyes, but smiled anyway. âIt is.â
((Yes, Hinata makes a fully recovery to volleyball in time for their second year Spring playoffs :P))
