#i know ive been gone for like 56 years

I have only really interacted with your fics, so i cannot say much about you personally.I did send an ask a good while ago, saying how your writing made me believe love is real or something along those lines. I think about your reply to my sleepy hazed and sentimentally sappy ask very frequently. I even have screenshotted it haha. I kept thinking about you saying this

It was like something just kind of clicked in me. I will save you from the bore that is my love life but essentially it’s almost non existent right now, and has been since a pretty bad relationship ended nearly two years ago. I had somewhat just made myself numb to the possibility or desire for love after that but when I read your writing It was a glimpse of what I had tried so desperately to shut out and I missed it so much.

I had missed pining and affection even the pain that came with it. Your response even furthered that and made me realize that I hadn’t even been looking for love in other facets of my life. I started looking for love in everything, not even romantic but just pure love. Putting love behind my own actions more and loving very liberally. Trying to view small things others do as acts of love. I was so obsessed with acts of love ai even based an assignment in a photography class (it was very well received in critique lol). Ive chilled out a bit since then but I still carry your words with me wherever i go and It has given me such a deeper appreciation for the life i’m living.

Now the fun part is a little association game i like to play! like i said i don’t know you personally but i’ve read your stuff and so here’s a few things they remind me of! i don’t have a reasoning for any of these

the colors apricot and lavender! the artist japanese breakfast, and UA. Tangled headphone wires and arm warmers. the times 7:34pm and 5:56 am. The fizzing of a dissolving tablet when dropped into water, waiting outside for your ride to arrive, oolong tea, sweet cream foam, and a pumpkin fig danish i had one time.

This one’s a little crazy person talk and I’m also not rly sure how it correlates but it does in my mind. It was a trip i went on earlier this year, to a beach. I was at, not my lowest but pretty low, one night i sat by the ocean til 5 am thinking about how i could just walk into the sea and never come out. What would happen to me? would i drown or would i just walk until i found somewhere new? maybe the fish would just carry me. no one would know where i’d gone, not even myself. At some point the sun came up and i saw a fish get washed onto shore. As it just sat there completely still I thought about how maybe it’s the universe’s trade off, the ol switcharoo. It comes out I go in, it wanted out as much as i did. It started flopping around gasping and squirming so i pushed it back into the ocean and it stopped for a second, probably to regain stability, and then darted back into the sea. I went inside, made some breakfast and thought about the countless things that have pushed me back in. your work reminds me of those things too

honestly i think about that ask almost daily too, because even if technically i know that people read my writing, it's such an unbelievable thought that it makes someone feel things and evokes emotions in them and that my words stay with someone, and thank you for gifting me your words in exchange of mine

it genuinely makes me so happy that you found a way to let love back into your life and a way to be happier i wrote parallels & almosts while coming out of a bad relationship and i remember how much energy and constant conscious effort it took to turn to a blank page and let myself fill it with anything even remotely good or happy, a bad relationship can be such an immobilizing and degrading chapter in our lives, and even if you get stuck in that chapter and forget how to turn to the next page for a week, a month, a year, a decade, it's such a big thing that you didn't close the book and put it back on the shelf, and you pushed that fish back into the water and you pushed yourself back into the water

yeah, that moment of stillness sometimes lasts for longer than we want it to, and maybe we shut down a little and forget how to spot the flowers that bloom where the road meets the sidewalk and the concrete has cracked a bit, but just like that fish in the sunrise you're back in the ocean and it doesnt matter how long it took to regain your stability, all that matters in the grand scheme of things is that you did it and to go on a bit of a tangent i think theres something funny abt how i first read your ask at 5am with my head so full of thoughts i was worried it's going to explode, and it reminded me of a story i wrote up for a comic for one of my classes this semester (the comic got ditched for another project, but the story is still dear to me) and even though it's never seen the light of day, it still reminded me of your story, so i hope you dont mind if i share it with you

Rain knocks on the window politely, so you let it in. Water flows between the cracks of the floorboards, and slowly fills up the room. The sea laps at your feet, hugs your ankles first, then your knees and waist, closes in around your ribs slowly, pushes more and more until you’re neck deep. You let it push you under, gently, comfortably, closing your eyes and filling your ears with ringing.

Is this what it’s like?

The pressure gets stronger and stronger, crushes your ribs into fine powder that the water washes away immediately. It keeps growing, until eventually you can’t feel anything anymore.

You keep falling, deeper and deeper until you touch sand, soft under your feet. Your heart feels at peace, settling into a slow rhythm. Small specks of light flood your vision, bubbles in the water turning into stars in the sky.

You float among them, and pick one out. It rests in your palm, weightless yet heavy, holding the entire weight of the universe. Full of knowledge and love, warm against your skin. You kiss it goodnight, a smile on your face as it explodes in your hold.

With it you’re gone, but so is everything else.

i keep rereading your story, and man, it's a poem of some sort, the ol switcharoo and the fish carrying you away... yeah i'll think abt this for the next 10-15 business days

and the associations oh i really cried over your message at 5 in the morning and it cleansed my soul in a way a little bird takes a bath in a puddle after a spring rain... they are all such lovely things to be associated with that part of me that i share on this silly blog, im putting your message in my pocket and carrying it around with me everywhere <3

maybe it's all down to the loss we learned

ive been working on a short story for a writing class and i was like. what if i turned it into a fic. so i did! and here we are!

Pairing: Steve Harrington x reader

Summary: When the reader left Hawkins, they made a deal with Steve to come back in five years and try again (aka childhood friends to lovers to strangers to...you gotta read to find out)

11:56 PM

Hawkins is different than you remember it. Five years have closed over the puckered wounds you left behind, and new buildings have risen from the ashes of the destroyed, and though it is still your hometown, it has grown and changed without you.

The drive up the quarry shows a path grown over with misuse, the worn dirt half-buried beneath gnarling weeds and brown grass. What used to be a hotspot for the town's teens appears to have been deserted.

It doesn’t hold the same magic it did the last night you were here - the magic it held all the nights before. When you climb out of the car and take a deep breath, that old rush of excitement and burst of joy are long gone.

Though, maybe that’s because that beat-up red Beemer is gone, too. It was never really the cold or the view that made you feel that way, anyway. It was always the prospect of him; him, nudging your side to make you laugh, or him, popping the top of some drink and passing the cold hand, or him, whispering in the dark as you perched on the hood.

Part of you expects him to appear out of thin air with that familiar crop of brown hair, the kind eyes and the lankiness he's surely grown out of by now and the crooked nose that wasn't borne unto him, but broken.

You move around the edge of your car - a newer one, a different one - and drop onto the hood, folding your arms tightly against your chest. Only after another minute do you finally allow yourself to pull your phone out of your pocket and check the time.

Four minutes to midnight.

You know he isn’t coming, but part of you likes to think he’s looked forward to this day, too. Part of you believes you didn’t set a place at the table for someone who never planned on stepping back over the threshold.

Three minutes to midnight.

He is not coming.

THEN

It was Steve who convinced you to apply, in the beginning, and it was Steve who convinced you to go, in the end.

Back then, before Hawkins spilled out monsters, the plan was always the two of you. Your dream school, across the country, and a community college and job for Steve, and a shitty apartment, and maybe a cat. The plan was always Steve and y/n, without question.

Then the world cracked in half, and your plans broke with them.

“You have to go,” Steve said, sitting on the edge of your bed, flipping through one of the many pamphlets you’d received since the big ‘YOU GOT IN’ letter came a month ago.

"It's 3000 miles away," you said, dropping down beside him. The bed dipped with your combined weight, and Steve shifted closer instinctively.

“Come on, you have to,” he said, looking your way with arched brows.

“It’s expensive.”

“Your mom showed me the scholarship offer when I got here. You’ll come out of school owing barely anything.”

“Steve-”

“No,” he said gently. “Y/n, look. This place-” he jerked a finger at the pamphlet, “-has the program you want, and it’s one of the best in the country. You’ve been talking about it since we were twelve. There are no negatives here.”

You frowned, tossing the pamphlet to the floor, drawing back and wrapping your arms around your stomach.

You couldn’t leave your friends, not after everything you’d seen and done and lost. You couldn’t leave your family, even if you weren’t exactly best friends. You couldn’t leave Steve. You couldn’t fly across the country and start a life and see the world without them.

You and Steve had plans. But the moment the Upside Down spread its jaws and bit down on Hawkins, those plans were shoved onto the back-burner indefinitely. There were people here to protect, to fight for - to fight with.

And yet, at the same time, this was your dream. So, how could you stay? How could you leave?

You couldn’t reply, the words thick on your tongue, sealing your lips shut.

“What’s up?” He asked. His fingers grazed your side before settling in the small of your back, trying to pull your attention his way.

“Nothing.”

“Like hell.”

He was visible in your periphery, but you didn’t look over. He shifted closer, not pushing any further than your constructed walls allowed; he wasn’t trying to know them down, but simply to be let in.

You took a deep breath and said, “I don’t want to leave you.”

He said your name with a sad, soft sigh.

“I know you can’t leave the kids, or any of these people,” you said, “but what if I can’t leave you?”

His thumbs ghosted your cheek for a beat before falling away, and his lips pulled into the saddest smile you’d ever seen.

"You were made for a hell of a lot more than getting stuck in some…inter-universal war for me."

“It’s not just for you,” you said.

“I know,” he said, one side of his mouth twitching. “But I can’t let you stay for me.”

You let out a shuddering breath. You’d never left anyone or anything behind before; you didn’t know how to do it; you didn’t know how to choose what bridges to burn.

“It’s your choice,” he said, “but you can’t make it for me. You have to make it for you.”

Neither of you spoke after that. Instead, you buried your face in the soft fabric of his shirt, and he wound his arms around you, and you let the silence shove away the truth and the reality of the situation.

Both of you knew the decision was made - maybe that’s why neither of you said anything.

NOW

11:59 PM

You’ve largely kept yourself from keeping tabs on Steve over the last five years. It was what you and he promised each other - to not hold back.

You wonder if he forgot. It’s been years - it would make sense.

Steve was never forgetful, though, even when you were kids. He paid attention, especially where you were concerned. The Steve you knew - the one you loved - wouldn’t have forgotten.

Which means he chose not to come.

You try not to let that burn, but it hits you with the wind, stinging your skin. The cold creeps beneath your coat, and you tug it closer around you, strands of hair brushing your cheeks. Your hair is longer, now, longer than Steve has seen.

Different. In so many ways, you are different.

THEN

When you arrived at the quarry, Steve’s red Beemer was already parked up top, sitting on a blanket spread across the dirt with piles of food surrounding him. His attention was on plucking weeds from the dirt until your car door popped open, and his gaze shot up, lips curling up in a smile at the sight of you.

You crossed the dirt to stand above him, folding your arms and cocking a brow.

“Midnight picnic?”

"It's 9 PM," he said, "grandma.”

“Not my fault you’re an insomniac.”

"You go to sleep at like 10 PM, I am not-"

“You totally are-”

Steve grinned, reaching out to nudge the back of your knees, buckling your legs, and he pushed up to catch you as you lost your balance, lowering you down onto the blanket. You squealed, gripping his arms and laughing as he rolled you beneath him, propped above you on his elbows.

The wide smile on his lips softened, turned more serious, and he brushed a strand of hair off your forehead, gaze flicking around your face like he was trying to memorize the lines of your expression.

You spent the end of the summer at the quarry, at least a month wasting the days away, sometimes with Robin. It was your last summer; it was your hardest summer.

“I’m gonna lose my mind without you,” he murmured.

“You already have,” you said, ignoring the painful twist in your gut. “Robin’ll have to lock you up.”

“She might kill me without you around to mediate,” he said. “She’s on the warpath for new jobs.”

“You’ll find one. It’ll all work itself out. Always does.”

“But not with you,” he said. You let out a breath, and Steve pushed off of you, laying on his back beside you. He snaked a hand out, pulling you against him, and you curled into the crook of his shoulder, one of your arms tossed across his stomach.

“You’re gonna be okay. We’re both gonna be okay.”

“I know,” he said. “I just…” He shook his head.

“I know,” you said, and shifted, laying your head on his chest, reveling in the slow and steady beat of his heart beneath your ear. “I know.”

“I think I might love you forever,” he said softly, a hand trailing up and down your shoulder.

Tears pricked the back of your eyes, and you lifted your head, stretching your chin to catch his mouth in yours. The kiss tasted of salt and loss and the draining seconds in the sand clock, and after that night, there was no more denying that the future was catching up to you; that the future might not keep you together.

NOW

11:59 PM

You weren’t sure you would come. The idea was tossed back and forth for months, one day a yes and the next a no, a constant fight until you finally booked the ticket after staring at the agent’s phone number for months.

But part of you always knew you’d end up here. Part of you always knew - or hoped, maybe - Steve was it.

All you can hope for now is that he feels the same.

THEN

You stood beside one another, hips touching, arms crossed against your chest, eyes on the still, black water below. This time of night, the woods were deserted, and the only sound was the soft patter of water on the rocks and the chirping of crickets.

It was your last night, and after making the rounds to see friends - a tearful goodbye with the party, a big hug from Robin, a care package from Joyce - you and Steve ended the day on top of the quarry.

"It's really happening," Steve said after a long silence. His words weren't angry or resentful, like part of you hoped they would be - it would make things easier. Instead, though, he was just sad. "This is it."

“Steve,” you said back. You said his name because you couldn’t say yes, and you looked at the ground because you couldn’t look at him.

You should have. You should have been memorizing his face, the curve of his shoulders, the way his hair fell over his forehead. You were twelve hours away from getting on a plane and flying across the country - twelve hours away from the beginning of the rest of your life.

But Steve wasn’t coming with you. He would be here, likely starting at a community college and working his way through the days with Robin. He’d likely marry a girl much kinder than you ever were and have 1.5 perfect kids and be happy.

You turned to face each other at the same time. You looked him up and down, wanting to remember this Steve, but also every other Steve he was and had been; the one who pushed you into poison ivy at eleven, who threw you the world’s cheesiest birthday party at fourteen, who kissed you first at sixteen.

The deadline sewed tension between you, and you were fifteen again, nervous around each other

, not quite sure where you stood or how you felt or what to do about any of it.

“Can I ask you to make a promise?” You asked.

Steve’s brows furrowed slightly, and he said, “Yeah. Sure.”

You tossed the words over on your tongue, threatening every tear that threatened to brim behind your eyes.

“In five years, when I’m done with school, and hopefully on my way to being a functioning member of society, I’m going to come back. I’m going to come back to this spot. And if your fight is over, and you want to try again, you’ll come, too.”

Steve nodded, traces of confusion in his eyes.

“And I don’t want either of us to force it. I want us to go into every relationship or opportunity or whatever with everything we have. But if it doesn’t work out, we can give this another go. We can pick up where we left off. We can try again.”

“Five years,” Steve said. “You’re sure?”

“No,” you said, “that’s the whole point. But maybe in five years, we will be.”

It was a silly promise, no more sturdy than love or a snowflake. But like people did to all those things, you clung tight. You wanted Steve to do the same.

And he agreed. Because he was Steve, he agreed.

NOW

12:00 AM

Midnight rolls in without a sound, without a blink. One moment it’s one day and then it’s the next, and you’re still standing here, nose going pink with the cold, waiting for someone who isn’t coming.

THEN

There was neither the time nor privacy for a proper goodbye. Instead, Steve wrapped his arms around you tightly, and you buried your face in his neck, and they held on for as long as they could - as long as was permitted for a couple that was officially broken up.

Then you pulled back, and Steve stepped away, and all he had was your fingers, gripped tightly in his own.

“Five years, yeah?” He asked. “No sweat.”

You let out a laugh, trading it for your tears.

“Yeah,” you said. “Five years.”

Steve held your gaze for one more moment before squeezing your hand and letting it fall. He smiled, sad and lopsided and Steve, and you smiled back. And then you got onto the plane, and didn’t look back - just as promised.

NOW

12:06 AM

That’s it. The book of Steve is being closed.

Your eyes flutter shut, and the weight of it settles on your lungs.

It is so easy to get lost in all the things you’ve lost. And it would be so easy to fall into it all, to let it all swallow you whole the way you wanted it to all those years ago, when you left Steve standing in the airport.

But you have a life now. You have a dog in the city, currently being dogs by the best friend who only knows Steve from the stories you’ve told her. You have a degree, have job options. You have things outside this quarry, outside this city.

You have things outside of this place - outside of Steve. He would be a bonus, but a life without him is survivable. You know - you’ve lived it before.

The sound of tires spitting up gravel. The silencing of an engine. The open and close of a car door.

When you open your eyes, you see a familiar crop of brown hair, cut a little shorter and with more intention, a silhouette more filled out, less of a lanky boy and more of a young man.

Steve walks toward you and stops a few feet away, taking you in the way you are him, a sentence hanging from his lips.

No more preppy polos or work vests for him. He shed the hand-me-downs and the well-hidden insecurity, and traded it for dark pants and a nice tee shirt tucked beneath flannel and a jean jacket, an air of something like confidence following.

“Sorry I’m late,” he says. He pats the hood of the old Beemer. “This car doesn’t take the path as easy anymore. I thought I was gonna break down halfway up.”

He scans you up and down once before letting his gaze settle on your face. That familiar, lopsided grin tugs on his lips.

It is not like Steve to be late, but it is not like you to wait, either.

You smile, and say, “Steve.”

Then he crosses the dirt, wraps his arms around you, and holds you tight. And there are still five years to wade through, and there will be no immediate snapping back to the old days, and even now, it may still crumble.

Nothing is certain. But you’re as certain about Steve as you are of anything, so it will have to do.

Red string & Spiders

The Web is obviously gonna be important in season 5 and ive been meaning to dig into some of it’s threads (hah) for a while. Now, I know about Web!Martin and I admit that it’s a possibility, but i dont personally see the narrative taking that route. 

I don’t know that all these connections are intentional manipulations either, but I’m just gonna work under the assumption that they are and see where it gets me. Somewhere behind the scenes, Annabelle and the Mother are playing five dimensional chess and laughing at all of us.

This ended up being a bit long (1.5k words, whoops!) so it’s going under a cut.

123: Web Development. 

“You would have to write out, and post, in full, a horrible event that had happened to you, or someone that you loved.“ This sounds an awful lot like Annabelle is collecting statements, possibly scouting victims and potential vectors through which she can influence the Institute? She starts doing this in early 2015 and that brings me to

16: Arachnophobia & 39: Infestation

Carlos Vittery's name is found in the Chelicerae website. His experience happened in early 2015 and he made his statement in April. Investigating his statement is what brings Martin into contact with Jane Prentiss and sets into motion a chain of events that saves everyone during the Infestation. ie, he ends up living at the archives and stashes the extra fire extinguishers and the corkscrew.

Of course, Prentiss is also forced to start the wormpocalypse early after Jon accidentally discovers it when killing a spider.

147: Weaver & 80: The Librarian

It’s that damn lighter. From 147: “I realise that addiction is one of the strongest vectors of control there is.“ Leitner wouldn’t have been left alone if Jon hadn’t gone for a smoke, or just vaped instead. (Daisy helpfully mentions that he smokes Silk cut brand at one point -.-)

Of course, the lighter was delivered alongside the web table and destroying it is also what directly lead Jon to meeting Leitner in the first place. idk if the goal here would’ve been to actually get Leitner killed or if that was just a side-effect of pushing Jon further along his journey?¨

121: Far Away

The Web sends Oliver Banks to feed Jon a statement and encourage him to go full avatar. It’s just very kind and helpful, huh?

130: Meat

It helpfully points toward using a body part as an anchor when entering the coffin. This whole mess gets Jon marked by both the Flesh and the Buried.

Hill Top Road, pt 1

There’s A Lot Too Unpack Here

So they’re originally using this place to ensnare fresh adults and filling them with spiders. I think it is a place of power and essentially a production facility for the hollow type of spider person that Trevor encounters in 56. These might very well be the “spider husks” that got Daisy sectioned in the first place. 

Then there’s the whole mess with Agnes. I still don’t feel like I fully understand what went down there. Let’s look at these two quotes:

“she had destroyed the place utterly. And yet she remained bound to it, tied to it in some vital way.” (Eugene Vanderstock, 139)

“It let the Mother of Puppets bind me to Agnes, interweave our existences at some… metaphysical level, as it had with Fielding and the house.” (Gertrude, 145)

So we have ties that bind between Fielding/Hill Top, Agnes and Gertrude. The way Eugene talks about it, seems that being bound to Hill Top wouldn’t prevent her from realising her destiny, but being bound to Gertrude did. And while waiting for Gertrude to die, doubt crept into her and made her unfit for their grand ritual.

I still don’t understand why the uprooting of the tree at Hill Top is what spurred Agnes to finally end it though. It seems like that might’ve broken the bond between her and that place, which you’d think is a good thing? idk, maybe we’re not done with Agnes yet, or I’m just overthinking it.

Hill Top Road, pt 2

Season 5 babey!

“I can’t say much about exactly what happened within the walls of that house, but it seems the fight scarred the place in a way far deeper than simple fire. A scar in reality, that I believe has since been compounded by the interferences of other powers.” (Eugene, 139)

“There is something wrong with Hill Top Road. You know it as well as I do. Some strange scar on reality at the center of - whatever it is that the Spider is spinning.” (Helen, 146)

First, idk if it’s anything but this kinda reminds me of how Jon is marked by every fear. 

Second, episode 114. This is the episode I keep coming back to when thinking about Hill Top Road cause what the heck is up with this:

“I went to clean that house on April the 23rd 2009 which, according to all of you, is tomorrow. But it can’t be. That was two weeks ago. I’ve tried to talk to my friends about it. Those of my friends I can find, but they seem distant, like they don’t really know me. Everything is just... wrong. I can’t find my favourite coffee shop. And I don’t know who you people are.“

This whole episode reeks of alternate universe and I’m just ??? Additionally, the lady talks about the tree in the backyard, but it was uprooted in 2006, so even more AU vibes. Of course, it could be mental manipulation, someone altering her memories, but that seems like a weird red herring that Jon doesn’t even pursue. 

Alternatively, we’ve seen NotThem rewrite reality around a person and at this time the NotThem was bound to the Web table. I don’t think that’s anything, particularly given that the table was destroyed, but it’s a thought. (And NotSasha was very recently released back into the world so, hmm)

Ultimately I feel like the lady in 114 may have been a kind of experiment? A trial run to see exactly how they could harness this scar in reality, or to see if they needed to exacerbate it further? Whatever it is, I’m certain it’s gonna be Important™ in season 5.

81: A Guest for Mr. Spider

I don’t think baby-Jon was necessarily targeted beyond being a convenient victim. Him walking away from Mr Spider alive though, that may have made him interesting. I wonder if the Web being the first to mark him carries special significance and that’s maybe why it’s been assisting him? Its highly speculative but the Web did also mark Gertrude and it sounds like it may have been her first mark too. (Assuming the cat thing to be a joke)

Maybe it’s trying to use this to hijack Elias’ ritual somehow? Or to do a second ritual? Or the order of the marks has no significance and all it wanted Jon for was the Mass Ritual?

110: Creature Feature & 136: The Puppeteer

I feel like I know the least about these two. I don’t know to what extent they’re really connected but Neil Lagorio and the film angle seems like a big thing, and Annabelle’s presence makes me think it’s part of something bigger.

So Lagorio is supposed to be creating a spider animatronic but is actually housebound (you could even say homestuck). Annabelle shows up at his place and spends 5 months doing something before he dies. As news of his death break, a big spider monster kidnaps ~100 actors. It doesn’t feel like a big leap to say that he probably created (or was used to create) some sort of spider in the end.

idk what the end goal here is though, why did Annabelle send Lagorio’s original cuts to the Institute? Why is one body a year washing up on a beach? Are they just using them to lay eggs in, or as food? Just killing people isn’t very spider-y but I guess everyone needs to eat?

This whole thing is giving me ritual vibes but I don’t think that’s it? At least not your standard ritual.

Elias & 160

I feel like the Web has definitely helped us get to 160 but I don’t think Elias is directly working with it. They just seem to share the completion of the Mass Ritual as a goal. (Or maybe they are working together and Elias is getting played somehow, that’d be nice.)

Annabelle straight up says “Maybe I’ve occasionally been nudging something here and there to keep you safe, to keep everything on track” and she directly calls out his compulsion to read statements, which Elias’ ultimately uses to set it off. I feel like, if she wanted to stop it, she would’ve just found some way to kill Jon.

I don’t know if the final goal was just to piggyback on Elias’ ritual though, that feels a bit too simple, especially since Hill Top Road hasn’t been resolved. There’s probably some further, sinister plot at play that just needed the fearpocalpyse to be a thing. I don’t know what it is, but it’s gonna involve a big spider and Hill Top Road.

THEATRE:HOME - 2:150 (thanks pandemic)

I usually separate out docs and fiction, but I watched almost no documentaries this year (with the exception of Dick Johnston). Reality is real enough. 

TV Series

01 - BoJack Horseman (final season) - Pretty damned poignant finish to the show, replete with actual consequences for our reformed bad boy protagonist (which is more than you can say for most antiheroes of Peak TV).

02 - *Hello Ladies - I enjoy the pure awkwardness of seeing Stephen Merchant try to perform being a Regular Person, but ultimately this show tips him too far towards a nasty, Ricky Gervais-lite sort of persona. Perhaps he was always best as a cameo appearance, or lip synching with wild eyes while Chrissy Teigen giggles?

03 - Olive Kittredge - a rough watch by times. I read the book as well, later in the year. Frances Mcdormand was the best, possibly the only, casting option for the flinty lead. One episode tips into thriller territory, which is a shock. 

04 - *The Wire S3, S4, S5 - lockdown culture! It was interesting to rewatch this, then a few months later go through an enormous, culture-level reappraisal of cop-centred narratives. 

05 - Forever - a Maya Rudolph/Fred Armisen joint that coasts on the charm of its leads. The premise is OK, but I wasn’t left wanting any more at the end. 

06 - *Catastrophe - a rewatch when my partner decided he wanted to see it, too!

07 - Red Oak - resolutely “OK” steaming dramedy, relied heavily on some pretty obvious cues to get across its 1980s setting. 

08 - Little Fires Everywhere - gulped this one down while in 14-day isolation, delicious! Every 90s suburban mom had that SUV, but not all of them had the requisite **secrets**

09 - The Great - fun historical comedy/drama! Costumes: lush. Actors: amusing. Race-blind casting: refreshing!

10 - The Crown S4 - this is the season everyone lost their everloving shit for, since it’s finally recent enough history that a fair chunk of the viewing audience is liable to recall it happening. 

11 - Ted Lasso - we resisted this one for a while (thought I did enjoy the ad campaign for NBC sports (!!) that it was based on). My view is that its best point was the comfort that the men on the show have (or develop, throughout the season) with the acknowledgement and sharing of their own feelings. Masculinity redux. 

12 - Moonbase 8 - Goodnatured in a way that makes you certain they will be crushed. 

13 - The Good Lord Bird - Ethan Hawke is really aging into the character actor we always hoped he would be! 

14 - Hollywood - frothy wish-fulfillment alternate history. I think the show would have been improved immeasurably by skipping the final episode.

Team CQL went rogue for the two major events featured in this episode—the Cloud Recesses drinking incident and the WangXian bathing scene��and really, bless them and their ancestors for that decision. Not only did the changes provide Wei Ying and Lan Zhan with additional bonding time, but they actually had significant bearing on future events.

Originally in the novel, Lan Zhan didn’t actually partake in the drinking incident that got Wei Ying punished: some nameless disciples, Nie Huaisang and Jiang Cheng were the ones who actually took part in those activities. Lan Zhan only found their drunk asses the next morning and dragged Wei Ying off for disciplinary action (although, from the way the scene was described in the book, it actually seemed like he was more angry at Wei Ying for looking at porn, lol). However, for the live action, that entire scenario was transformed into Lan Zhan actually getting drunk for the first time, albeit against his will. Of course it would have been better if he willingly joined in, but at that point in time, that would have been illogical, not to mention completely out of character for him, so even though Wei Ying sort of did Lan Zhan wrong, there was probably no other way he could have gotten him to share a drink with him otherwise.

I am especially grateful for this change because that is the moment when my eyes were finally open to Wang Yibo’s talents as an actor and I started to really appreciate his performance. Prior to this episode, I was actually wondering if he was playing stoicism so well because that’s really all he was capable of doing, but then, when he dropped that rigid façade and gave us a charmingly adorable drunk Lan Zhan, I realized that everything that came before were indeed acting choices, that he was definitely able to do more than that. Not to mention, he also had pretty good comedic timing. I started to look at him in an entirely new light after watching this episode, and the rest is, as they say, history.

Upon revisiting this episode last night, I finally realized something that I never thought of before, and I feel actually pretty stupid for not even making the connection until now.  During the Koi tower scenes in the present, when Wei Ying as the paperman was eavesdropping on Jin Guangyao and his wife’s conversation, I couldn’t figure out how JGY was able to put Qin Su under his control the way he did, but in watching this episode again, it finally came to me: he probably used a modified version of the charm that Wei Ying used on Lan Zhan in here. After all, JGY was one of the many people who raided the Burial Mounds and took over the Yiling Patriarch’s possessions after his death, so it would make sense for him to discover this particular memento as well. When I first watched this episode, I was mainly just impressed by how powerful the charm is that it would be able to put someone like Lan Zhan under its spell, considering he’s not just some lay person, but rather someone who already had a pretty high level of cultivation by then. I simply saw it as yet another indicator of just how talented and powerful Wei Ying was even at that young age. But now, thinking that Team CQL may have laid the groundwork for something that was going to happen so much later just makes me so much more impressed with their planning.

Of course I could simply be overthinking this whole thing and JGY’s magical powers could just be his own magical powers, or something common to the cultivation world that my dumb brain just overlooked, but for those few seconds when I thought I came upon a fascinating connection, I was quite proud of myself, so allow me to coast on that sense of euphoria just a little while more.

Bonding and other cuteness

Of course I loved every single moment of the Drunk!Lan Zhan sequence, starting with that tiny little flirtatious gesture by Wei Ying. Seriously, how CUTE is that?? Makes me smile every time I see it, and I’ve rewound that little moment numerous times. How anyone can be resistant to Wei Wuxian’s charms I can never understand, but clearly Lan Zhan was still holding out on him. I’m glad that Team CQL chose this incident to reveal the nature of the Gusu Lan head ribbon since it directly led to Wei Ying’s bonding moment with Lan Zhan. Even though the other man was still generally cold to him, it was really sweet that Wei Ying still felt comfortable enough to share the precious memory of his parents with him.

It’s a real shame that Lan Zhan didn’t remember any of it the next day, but I did take comfort in the fact that he still knelt by Wei Ying like a united front to receive Uncle Lan’s wrath and punishment. I’m sure most of that was motivated by his own pride and sense of righteousness, but I still found it touching, especially with how much Wei Ying was defending Lan Zhan so that he would be spared the disciplinary action. Wei Ying was much less protective in the novel during that scene–he was mostly indignant–even  though he was still the one to blame for Lan Zhan’s involvement in the whole incident by basically tricking him into breaking curfew. I love that even though Team CQL changed the drinking incident, they still managed to maintain the spirit of its novel counterpart, much like they did with the Phoenix Mountain Hunt.

And then of course there was this:

Which was obviously a treat for our imaginations to get our creative juices flowing so that we can imagine on our own what might have taken place during the night that led to Wei Wuxian waking up in his half-dressed state. For this gift, I am eternally grateful to the production team.

Jiang Cheng Has Fun For Once

I was actually surprised that Jiang Cheng would join in on the drinking party because up until then he had spent most of his time basically disapproving everything Wei Ying did while also seemingly in a constant state of worry that he would embarrass their sect. Imbibing alcohol was clearly a violation of Gusu Lan rules so it’s kind of amazing that Jiang Cheng willingly join in on such an act of rebellion. Nie Huaisang, on other hand, I totally expected to be a part of the shenanigans…I would’ve expected nothing less from him…but Jiang Cheng was a pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed seeing him let loose like that, especially since we got to find out what he looked for in a mate.

The sad thing is Wen Qing actually fit all of his requirements for a wife, except for that family one, which i in the end, proved to be the most important one after all since it became the deal-breaker, dooming their relationship before it even got a chance to get started.

Another rather sad aspect of seeing Jiang Cheng so at ease and acting like a total goofball is that this really would be the only time we would ever see him this way.  His time at Cloud Recesses was probably the most enjoyable and carefree for him. I doubt he was ever able to enjoy himself the same way again. It actually makes me wonder if he EVER was able to have fun, period, during the last 16 years. Just thinking about what he’s gone through makes me wish I could give him a great big hug. 

Reason #10 for Why I love Big Bro Lan Xichen

Big Bro Xichen is just too adorable, AND HE DESERVES ALL THE LOVE IN THE WORLD DAMMIT.

Uncle Lan is One Mean Mofo

Seriously, what’s with Lan Qiren’s obsession with the number 300? I really need to know if there’s some significance to that number since it’s featured in BOTH of the major disciplinary incidents in the show that were carried out by Uncle Lan.  For this first outing, those rulers looked downright brutal; it’s a utter miracle that Wei Ying and Lan Zhan were even able to survive being beat 300 times with that medieval torture device. At the very least their spines should’ve been broken, paralyzing them for the rest of their lives. In the novel they were only caned 100 times, which is still a lot but it’s still a somewhat grounded enough number that I could believe they would be able to heal from their injuries. But 300? They should be maimed. I’ve noticed that with chinese dramas though: they tend to be excessive when it comes to inflicting punishment. I actually stopped watching a show once because the main character was being beaten repeatedly in the stomach (Princess Weiyoung) while being held prisoner. That particular character should not have survived that beating…at the very least he would’ve needed his nutrients to be delivered by IV for the rest of his life (even though IVs didn’t exist yet) because there was no way his stomach was ever going to work again after that. I was almost offended by how ignorant the screenwriters were about basic anatomical and biological functions so I decided to just stop watching (well, the fact that I wasn’t that into the show anyway probably contributed to my decision as well) Of course the 300 floggings weren’t enough to discourage me from continuing forward with The Untamed, but it did throw me out of the show for a good moment because I couldn’t get over how ridiculous that number was.  Uncle Lan really has a sadistic streak in him

Not to mention, he was also surprisingly tactless. He had just learned about Wei Wuxian’s mom from big bro Xichen and I couldn’t believe that he would just throw that info at the Wei Ying in such a careless way, only to shut him down when the poor guy desperately asked for more details about his mom. Uncle Lan had to know enough about Wei Ying’s background to understand how sensitive he would be in regards to his deceased parents, so I was actually taken aback by how heartless Uncle Lan was being during that scene, so much so that for a while after, I really wasn’t feeling much love towards him. Although, now that I think about it, love is probably a misnomer any way since I doubt I would ever love Uncle Lan nor can I even say I ever actually liked him–he’s too much of a fuddy-duddy for my tastes. It’s more like I just accept his existence, appreciate his importance to the Lan brothers, and I find his disapproval of Wei Ying kind of amusing. But in that moment, I definitely did straight out dislike him for being such a cold SOB, especially towards Wei Wuxian.

Team RWBY and the Very Long Day

Or maybe... not as long as you’d expect?

When the team reaches Atlas Academy and are brought on a tour, they’re dead tired. Now, as someone who’s gone on a number of college tours myself, I totally can relate. And plus, the team has had a really long day -- Volume 6 Chapter 10 through Volume 7 Chapter 2 have all been the same day.

However, it feels a lot longer for us than it should, since we saw it over a nine-month period, and they only experienced it in a day. But how long was that day specifically?

There’s a couple factors we need to consider: time zones, hour of sunset, flight hours, and actual in-show events. By evaluating this, we will determine: How long of a day were the past 6 chapters of RWBY? Is their exhaustion justified by canon events?

Spoilers, math, and lots of pointless reading below. 

I) Time Zone

According to this map (the fifth image) from the second “World of Remnant” short, we get a pretty good approximation of the location of Atlas. Argus is on the U-shaped peninsula a third of the way from Mistral to Atlas. Ideally, time zones would work in 24 hour-wide increments, so assuming there is NOT a huge Pacific-like ocean around Remnant’s back half, there is approximately a two-hour time difference between Argus and Atlas. This means the sun sets on Argus earlier than Atlas -- however, Atlas is further North, so sunset may be earlier for them relative to someone at a lower latitude in their timezone. Additionally, it also means the team may experience around two hours of jet lag upon arrival. 

II) Sunset

When the gang arrives in Atlas, it is night time. In Volume 6 Chapter 7, they arrive at Argus in mid-afternoon. Because the next episode’s scenes with Cordovin at the base and Maria in the garden do not have the same warm lighting, we can infer that those took place the next day, sometime during the middle of the day. They receive news that Oscar is missing and begin their search -- however, unless they were searching for him like in Volume 1 Chapter 16 (if you recall, that was 12 hours), it’s likely they were out of the house for no more than 4 hours. From the end of Volume 6 Chapter 8 to the end of Volume 6 Chapter 9 might have been from, call it, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM -- meaning sunset was sometime within those hours. It is wintertime in the Northern hemisphere of Remnant (quick summary, it’s been about a year since the end of Volume 3 Chapter 12), so assuming they don’t have daylight savings time, this is a pretty reasonable estimate for when the sun would set in a city whose latitude is comparable to that of Paris. If we take a quick look back at Atlas, it is MUCH farther North than Argus, and is pretty much in the Arctic. If we compare map distances, Atlas might as well be in Iceland, as Paris and Reykjavik are 1,396 air miles away from each other. In December in Iceland, the sun sets at around 3:00 to 4:00 PM. Therefore, it is perfectly reasonable that people would still be up and about when it appears to be night time in Atlas. 

III) Flight Hours

What this means is that the team, in order to leave Argus during daytime (earlier than 5:30 PM) and to arrive in Atlas during nighttime (later than 4:00 PM) when there is a two-hour time difference between them, it works out to assume that the minimum time a flight on an Atlesian dropship would take from Argus to Atlas would be 4 hours. Even more generous would be to allow them 5 hours, considering the pace of the vehicle. 

IV) Events

I’d like to start with the evidence we see in Atlas and work backwards to make a fair assumption about when they arrive in Atlas. The amount of people on the streets and the fact that Dr. Polendina’s pharmacy is open makes me want to believe it’s before 6:00 PM. The Faunus miners we see on the passing vehicle makes me wonder if this is accurate, however, because I would assume the miners would work more unreasonable hours than that. I will chalk this up to be a case of world details being more important to show punctually than consistently. Anyways, if we say it’s 5:30 PM in Atlas when they arrive, then it’s likely 3:30 PM in Argus when they depart (accounting for a 4 hour flight and 2 hour time zone difference.)

Now, for the real numbers:

Ruby’s role in the heist takes place more or less in real time, while Blake and Yang’s excursion with Adam is punctuated by breaks of which we cannot know the duration. Therefore, knowing that Blake and Yang rejoin the group in Volume 6 Chapter 13, I will only recount the “cliff-side” events, as it were, to calculate the duration of the heist itself.

Volume 6 Chapter 10

We have no idea when the heist begins. Cordovin, being a military officer, would probably want Weiss to arrive at a sharp hour, so let’s call that hour “X:00″ o’clock. Based off of our previous calculations, the end of the heist must occur at around 3:30, so depending on their length, this hour could be 3:00 PM. (Spoiler: it totally will be.)

The episode begins on the Rooster Teeth website at 2:08 minutes, and from there it pretty much goes in real time until 4:50, which is the moment when Weiss loses scroll signal with Ruby. Ruby loses signal with Weiss at 6:02, so we can deduce that those next 1:12 minutes of Ruby’s timeline are occurring simultaneously with what we see of Weiss. From the beginning of the heist to when Ruby loses signal is 2:42 minutes in real time (how efficient of Weiss!). From 6:02 to 11:02 is the next realtime sequence, at which point we cut to Blake and Adam, but again, we’ll be ignoring them for now. Now, the heist has been in progress for 7:42 minutes; it is X:07.

Volume 6 Chapter 11

The episode officially begins at 2:08 again. The first scene of them talking lasts until 4:01, when it cuts away from them planning to attack. Let’s be generous and give them 30 unspoken seconds where some offscreen planning occurs, making that first sequence about 2:37 minutes. Then, the sequence continues from 4:01 to 9:44 (no, I’m not counting slow motion because that’s dumb). Then, we cut away again. This episode’s total real-time stacks up to 8:20 minutes. Therefore, the heist has now been occurring for 16:02 minutes, so it’s about X:16 o’clock.

Volume 6 Chapter 12

This episode actually starts at 1:57 -- wow, wild. It runs continuously to 7:25 (no, cutting back and forth between dialogue doesn’t fucking count), making this section 5:28 minutes. We cut away to Bees, but we return to Cordovin at 11:42, pretty much exactly where it left off, and that carries on to the end of the episode at 12:54. The total of the episode comes out to be 6:40 minutes, since the Bees got a lot of murder screentime. We are also now 22:42 minutes into the heist, and it is X:22 o’clock.

Volume 6 Chapter 13

Cinder and Neo take up the first few minutes of screentime, so the episode starts for our main heroes at 3:33. It kind of carries over from the previous episode, but there’s enough fighters in the air that I’ll give them 90 seconds of cushion time to compensate for realism. I will also add 30 seconds between when Weiss says they destroyed the mech to when they’re all in the airship taking flight at 4:21. Since they like skipping time so much for dramatic effect, I’ll add ANOTHER 30 seconds between when Ruby realizes she has to face it alone and they hatch their second plan at 8:39. I’m going to stop the clock at 9:55 because Ruby yells for Jinn and stops time in-universe until her Silver Eyes moment at 11:16, which, while awesome, is the first event that occurs once time speeds back up to normal. So that whole first section, including padding, was 8:52 minutes. Then, from Silver Eyes to the end of this time section when they time skip to their arrival at 13:14 is 1:58. Finally, the episode cuts to credits at 16:51, the last line being “welcome home,” making the total for the episode 14:27. 

I’d like to note that the episode was 10:50 minutes before they timeskipped to their arrival, so it was 33:32 minutes into the heist and X:33 when they left for Atlas. We said earlier it would be best if they left at around 3:30 PM, and what do you know: the number works out! We can therefore pretty confidently say the heist began at 3:00 PM, which will be important later.

Volume 7 Chapter 1

That’s right folks, we’re not done! Now in Atlas, it is 5:33 PM, just like we predicted it would be. The line “welcome home” is said at 0:38, where I’ll be starting the clock for this episode, but I’ll add the 3:37 of dialogue that occurred the previous episode. They cut away to some pretty Atlas shots while they descend into the city, so I’ll provide 60 seconds of offscreen time. From there, we stay in real time until they put the ship down, which I’ll again provide another 60 seconds for. After their encounter with the MAGA (Make Atlas Great Again, obvs) hecklers, let’s say they walk for another 60 seconds before reaching Piedro’s pharmacy. Continuing to the end of the episode, it’s pretty continuous, except for the extra 90 seconds I’ll provide for them being loaded into the airship. The realtime total for this episode is 18:24 minutes, so it’s been 4 hours and 51:56 minutes since they began the heist, and it’s now 5:51 PM in Atlas.

Volume 7 Chapter 2

The episode starts at 1:46. Let’s be generous and say they’ve been in the air for 2 minutes so far. The episode plays out pretty much in real time until 15:18 where we enter Penny’s montage, so I’ll add about 3 more minutes of travel time to and from Ironwood’s office within Atlas Academy and account the Ironqrow moment for the time it took offscreen for the rest of the group to start Penny’s tour. Then, because I’ve been on many a college tour myself, I expect they’ll be walking for about 10 minutes before they start to feel like they need to collapse. So, in total, this episode takes 29:02 minutes of real time, bringing the amount of time since the start of the heist to 5 hours and 20:58 minutes, making it now approximately 6:21 PM.

In that time, various members of the team have singlehandedly overwhelmed two Argus soldiers, taken control of an airship, fought brutally with their archnemesis, battled a giant mech, flown into the barrel of a cannon, murdered a man, entered a maelstrom of Grimm, obliterated a behemoth of a Final Boss, taken a 4 hour flight, fought an onslaught of new Grimm, reunited with former besties, sisters, and colleagues alike, been arrested, and worst of all gone on a college campus tour.

V) Conclusions

I don’t think the team is suffering from that much jetlag, but I’d definitely be exhausted with that much happening even if it was only 8:21 PM in “my time.” (International travel takes a lot out of you, man.) Additionally, they probably got up earlier in the day (maybe around 9:00 AM, Argus time, if it was a lazy morning), so at this point, they’ve been awake for 11 hours, assuming no one took a nap on the airship.

However, I was surprised to find that even though all 6 of these episodes happened in one day, the actual heist part took only 33 minutes, and their first day in Atlas was about 47 minutes, maybe actually longer. That means that a LOT of the bullshit I listed above was packed into 33 minutes, and the remaining time stretched out over a leisurely hour or so. This post also was made on 11/09, so it might even happen that the next episode CONTINUES this exhausting day, in which case, expect an update.

TLDR: In conclusion, the team deserves to be tired AF because of all the crazy stuff that’s happened to them today. However, they were not awake for an exceptionally long time, nor did the events in Argus actually take up much of their day, much to my surprise.

February 15th, 2000

Early hours of the day…

“Time of death,” her words break the silence, “2:56.”

I.

The detective keeps focusing on the how, “How did it happen?” He knows ‘how’ it happened: a blood clot blocked a pulmonary artery, compromising her respiratory function and raising the pressure on the right cavities of her heart, leading to full cardiac arrest. Simple and effective; there was nothing to be done. He’s more concerned about the ‘why’: why did he have a knife, why wasn’t he on restraints? Why was that son-of-a-bitch so out of himself he felt the need to attack those who were trying to help him?

Why here? Why her?

Kerry is peeking over the reception counter, he can sense her even before turning at her. One look and she knows – she knows. Her head slowly disappears as Robert tells the detective that he’s willing to answer any questions he still has but it has been a very long night and he needs some rest. The guy still tries, “This won’t take long, doctor…”, but he’s already past him and doesn’t even care. It’s not like they’re going to need his help anymore anyway.

He passes the counter, behind which Kerry remains with Greene, both with heads down. Some part of him wants to join them – whether to embrace or raging against them, Robert’s not sure. What he’s sure of right now is that he needs to get out as soon as possible: to get away from this place, away from these people, just him and his failure, maybe a bottle of bourbon.

Later, though. First there’s something he needs to do…

II.

Cleo is waiting when he leaves the OR, feeling grumpy and over the edge. He had to abandon Carter in a critical situation to clean up her mess, but now she came to inform him that he’s doing okay and suddenly Peter feels like a weight has been lifted up from his shoulders. This has been a very long night.

She remains a little absent, though, and the alarm in the back of his head warns him that something else is not okay, he just doesn’t know what yet. Her voice finally breaks, “There was a complication with Lucy…”, and she doesn’t have to say more. He can feel the sense of security abandon him and feels shaken for a while, as Cleo keeps sharing the few details she’s already aware of but he’s not listening.

He can’t absorb this information, can’t process it, can’t accept it. He’s not ready for this.

His hand flies against her shoulder and pushes her gently, allowing him to leave in a hurry and without a word. She still calls him (“Peter… Peter, I’m so sorry!”) but he pretends not to hear. The only thing on his mind is that someone is going to have to tell Carter when he wakes up and he wants to be there when it happens.

III.

It’s her job to carry the news to the other side of the road, since Malik is drowning in work, Yosh hasn’t been seen for a while and she’s the only nurse left. She wears the coat over her scrubs and warms her hands in a pair of gloves, but the cold hits Chuny’s face when the automatic doors open at her passage. It feels somewhat odd to her, that she always linked Lucy to bright colors and warmth and her energy wears out on a dark freezing night. Maybe it’ll even start snowing again – an ultimate apology for the unwarrantable cruelty they had to experience.

They’re together when she reaches them, all smiling and laughing at a funny story Haleh is recalling. Then her presence is noticed and they’re suddenly back to reality, waiting for her words. And she wants to share them, she needs to take them out of her system, but they’re gone after the mention of her name.

It just doesn’t seem right. It doesn’t make any sense.

And Lydia’s eyes fill up with tears, and Haleh’s smile gets lost in perplexity, and Chuny knows that not only her message has passed through, but also that they are on the same page with her.

IV.

There are four other people at the table, overwhelmed by silent emotions.

One never really knew her. She was just another medical student around the place, sometimes she noticed her, sometimes she didn’t.

The other one talked to her once, following a terrible first day. True, she hadn’t been very soothing: yes, this is hard and yes, this is going to be even harder, she had told her. But she was throwing money from the rooftops (a dying man’s last wish, apparently) and yes, it did make her feel better, which also gave her some hope. She’d like to know her better. Maybe they could have been friends.

Another one had gone through several stages over the year: from cute and so skilled to too stubborn and very certain of her own properness (“Yeah, I really hate that in a woman!”). But if there was something steady about her it was that in Lucy he had also found one of the few who were willing to give him a chance – as a colleague or a friend, she just knew people too well. How she let this happen, now he’d never know.

And the last one stares at the wooden table, her last words, heard just a few weeks ago, echoing inside his mind. He’s thinking about the girl who just wanted to find her place in a world that didn’t feel like hers; a world that ultimately consumed her in her commitment and didn’t allow her to come back. A life cut so short… and for what, in the end?

They’re all in need of a strong drink.

V.

Pain…!

There’s pain all over his body: his head is aching, his throat is sore, his chest is heavy, his back is killing him, his legs don’t obey his orders. It’s reaching its peak and then slows down, though it’s never gone, but at least it allows him to think.

That’s when Benton’s silence hits him and the impact is stronger than any word. “Lucy’s dead, isn’t she?” It’s clear to him, he doesn’t even know how he didn’t sense it before.

Lucy’s dead, and he can’t believe something so terrible can happen from something so trivial. Lucy’s dead, and he should have been there to prevent it, he should have protected her from this. Lucy’s dead, and he can’t precise the last thing he told her, whether it made her smile or sigh out of frustration, something he had mastered over the past year and a half. Lucy’s dead, and he can’t remember how her face looked like after he told her she would be a great doctor someday.

But he never really got to tell her that, did he?

Carter rests his head on the bed and looks away, staring into the void. He doesn’t even notice when Benton leaves the room, unable to say a word. Lucy’s dead, and somehow he’s sure that some part of him has died with her too.
