Days 19-22
Day 19
Today’s breakfast was a delicious combination of family mart bread, yoghurt and juice eaten in the ryokan dining room. The historic fight over who got the melon pan will be remembered for generations. After breakfast, we traveled to Dazaifu, a beautiful but busy temple, before heading to Komyozen-ji, a temple surrounded by expansive zen gardens that were garnished with the autumn leaves from the trees above. For lunch, oliver and I explored to find some delicious food. What we thought was some delicious meat on a stick ended up being a bitter rice snack that was definitely and unexpected taste. Afterwards, I found a karaage restaraunt which was definitely the better choice. After eating, we met back up with the group to visit the Kyushu National Mueseum. Being able to wander alone throught he exhibits with an audio guide alowed for a more immersive and personal experience with the museum. One of the highlights was watching a short video about the discovery of old burial sites found in the hillsides of coastal Japan and the cultural significance of its design. After a small look at the gift shop, we made our way down the giant escalators and back to the ryokan. Some of the boys and I decided to celebrate our last night in fukuoka with an all you can eat pizza fest at Shakey’s pizza. I know it wasn’t exactly japanese cuisine but it was fun to try something we cant get back home in Australia. The burger pizza was definitely the star of the evening. Afterwards we went back to the ryokan to sleep.
Day 20
The second round of convenience store breakfast was much more organised than the first, after eating I dressed up in my tropical shirt and boardshorts, ready to embrace the tropical heat of ishigaki island! After leaving the ryokan we travelled to the airport for our two-and-a-half hour domestic flight South of mainland Japan, only a hop and a skip away from Taiwan and China. After taking a bus to the hotel, we settled in at another Toyoko Inn, dumping our bags down before heading to dinner at a local izakaya and utilising (or fighting with) the lazy susan table. After dinner, we went back to the hotel, getting ready for the next day.
Day 21
This morning after a classic Toyoko Inn breakfast, we all got into the island spirit by catching the bus to Kabira bay and taking a glass bottom boat ride over the coral reefs, getting some amazing views of the aquatic life and impressing our guide with some unexpected Japanese words. After returning to shore we split up for lunch. Oliver and I went walking to find a corner store where I got to buy my collectable Okinawa coke bottle before eating a ishigaki style beef wrap and the popular salt flavoured ‘blue-seal’ icecream which melted faster than I anticipated. After returning, Oliver, Ben and I took a small gander around town to look at the arcades and restaraunts. We also stopped along the way and caught a bus to Donquijote, a mega store containing everything from fresh produce to go-pro cameras. We entertained ourselves there for a while before heading back to town, eating some food at an A&W diner and resting up at the hotel, having a few drinks and appreciating the air-con.
Day 22
This morning was the day I was looking forward to most on Ishigaki, travelling to Taketomi Island to ride the bikes and swim at the beaches. Upon arrival we got our bikes organised and raced towards a local restaraunt for lunch where I ate a bowl of Yaeyama ramen before heading back to the bikes and riding down to the beach. We found a horde of stray but friendly cats that were more than happy to take some photos with us in exchange for head pats. Some of us went to the water and hopped over the spikey coral bits to reach the sea (technically the South China Sea) and enjoy the water. There were hundreds of sea cucumbers around the ankle deep waters that were undoubtedly bothered by our presence. After finishing up at the island, we took the ferry back to Ishigaki and had another dinner at the Izakaya from the first night. Enjoying the same dishes as well as some new ones to finish off the day. We all read our haikus before heading back to the hotel to rest for the next day.

Although it’s not an easy walk, but the path has guardrails, however you still need to be cautious in managing your little ones while climbing it. Now coming to something more of what I am fascinated – the sandy beaches and crystal-clear water which create a picture of tranquility and calmness in my heart. Is it the case with you too? Then Sleepy Bay and Gravelly Beach are the right places which are also known as rocky beaches. Oh yes, other than these beauties, don’t forget to take a walk to the Wineglass Bay and Coles Bay.
