Redwood Tree

“I grew up in the Bay Area with a redwood tree in my backyard, and I did a lot of thinking up there. I wasn’t raised in a specific religion, but the most magical, awe-inspiring experience I can think of is being in the redwoods, feeling so small. It’s like a cathedral in that it reminds you of your place in everything. Fallen redwoods have rings that represent the thousands of years that they lived, and you’re like, ‘Oh, we’re just flies buzzing around.’ We wake up one day shocked to realize our parents are suddenly old. Like, when did my dad's beard get so white? I had watched the movie Arrival around the time we wrote this song, and I loved the idea of time not being linear. The soundtrack has these voices that go ‘Da, da, da, da,’ and we nod to that in the production. I hope time isn't linear. I hope I get more time with my parents.”

The Otherside

“Tim, or Avicii, came to Nashville a few years ago to write for one of his albums, and we were in the studio with Hillary Lindsey and Tyler Johnson. He started playing this piano melody over and over and over again, and I don't smoke cigarettes but when Hillary took a cigarette break, I was like, ‘I'm going, too.’ It was just so intense. He was really stuck on this thing. While we're out on the back porch, she and I came up with an idea for the chorus, and he loved it. But he fiddled with it for hours. He was thinking about cadence, about how we speak, about code-mapping it onto a melody, and about the actual phonetics. Tim never wound up releasing that song, so I was like, ‘Ooh, maybe that means I can.’ Even though it’s such a heavy thing not having him around for the final edits, I did feel this great responsibility to work my ass off to get it right. Because I knew that’s what he would have done.”

Classic

“On the other side of the spectrum, this is one of those songs that just magically fell into place. I went up to New York for a few sessions with Jack Antonoff at Electric Lady Studios, and it was so fun. Creatives tend to beat themselves up a lot, but Jack and I sat there jangling around on this 12-string guitar and writing a song that had this nostalgic Simon & Garfunkel ‘Cecilia’ vibe. It’s about how there are people in your life that outlast everything else—technology, fashion trends, swings in politics, whatever. Nothing's a constant in life, but a few people are. It was inspired by this moment when my husband and I were in Argentina and he found a pack of Lucky Strike cigarettes. He doesn't smoke anymore, but he goes, ‘I’ve got to smoke these because they don't make ‘em like this anymore.’ And then he looks at me and goes, ‘That's a country lyric.’”

Forgetting You

“I was writing with Lori McKenna, Tyler Johnson, and Mitch Rowland, and we’re all pals from working on various projects together. Still, I always get nervous when I go write with Lori, even though she's so humble and chill, because I’m like, ‘Don't embarrass yourself in front of the poet of our generation!’ Which is to say, I knew I needed to bring in something cool. I had this line, ‘I'm getting older/But you never change.’ The song is about holding on to the concept of someone from the past, and measuring everyone up to them even though it’s no longer real. That's why you keep moving forward but they never seem to age.”

Like a Movie

“Before we were married and had a kid, I’d come home from tour and my husband and I would have this tiny bit of quality time together. And the truth is, we’d usually get high and go to Walmart. One day, we were unloading all our groceries and I was like, ‘How did you know it was me? How did you know not to settle for someone earlier or wait for someone else?’ And he just smiled and said, ‘Because when I met you, it was like a movie.’ Now, I can remember when we met. I was a mess. It did not look like a movie. But it was so, so sweet. I wrote with the love junkies—Lori McKenna, Liz Rose, and Hillary Lindsey—and the strings are David Campbell, who’s actually Beck’s dad. Jeff Bhasker wanted a ’50s movie soundtrack vibe with strings that swelled like an orchestra, and David immediately got it. Apple Music did a teaser video for the album, and if you watch it, there should be video footage from that string session.”

“I usually write all my own music, but this is the first of a couple songs on this album that I didn’t. I guess I feel like it's cheating. I'm supposed to be digging all this personal stuff up and figuring myself out, so taking someone else’s song feels like a shortcut. But I trust Harry [Styles]’s writing. I feel like he tries so hard to be himself in his music, and he doesn't take it lightly. That pursuit resonates with me. The demo had Lori McKenna singing with Harry on background vocals and his whistle, which is still in the track. It was amazing to hear a song that someone else wrote that clicked so much with me personally. It’s about feeling like you’ve outgrown where you're from, and you don't really want to admit that. It’s kind of an uncomfortable thing to say, but I love when things are uncomfortable. That means it’s important.”

Till There's Nothing Left

“This song has steamy sexual energy... Like, ‘I'm giving you my whole heart but also my body and a quickie in the back seat.’ While we were recording my vocals, I was trying to sit back and make it cool and sexy, and I realized I was blushing. I was blushing because society tells us that sexuality is a private thing. If you want to be respected as a woman, if you want to be considered intelligent, you can’t be sexual. But then I was reminded of my grandmother who was raised Baptist on a farm in Saskatchewan. She's the one who gave me the sex talk, unbeknownst to my mother. She said, ‘Sex is like a milkshake. Once you have it, you're always going to want it.’ She was comfortable with her sexuality without it being the main thing about her. So I thought, ‘If a woman born in the 1930s on a farm in Canada can own it, I can own it.”

What Goodbye Means

“A friend of mine was going through a divorce. It was pretty ugly, but he was being so kind. I asked him, ‘How are you being so nice right now? I don't get it.’ And he said, ‘Because she might change her mind.’ I still get goosebumps thinking about it. We've all been there, not quite ready to accept the reality of something, and that's okay. You've got to take it at the rate you can take it. This song has such a classic melody. It’s warm. For some reason it feels like a summer evening in New Mexico to me.”

Diane

“This song is a response to Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene,’ and man, it really seems to resonate with people. Crowds sing it back to me in this emotional, over-the-top, theatrical way. I suppose most people have had infidelity affect their life one way or another, but it’s hard to watch people you care about go through it. There's so much shame around it that you don't get to talk about what you need or how to heal. And you almost never get to hear the other party’s side. So ‘Diane’ is my moment to role-play, I guess. I'm the other woman and I slept with your husband and I didn't know he was married, but you’ve got to know the truth. Parton's lyrics to the other woman include the word ‘please,’ and that just killed me. She's so humble and human, asking someone to please not take the love of her life away. Immediately, I was like, ‘That's the narrative. That's what is so often left unsaid.’”

“This is the other song that I didn't write, and it’s from Sam Smith and Tyler [Johnson]. Sam and I have a great relationship because I helped write the song ‘Palace’ for their album and then they brought me out on tour. We have a lot of trust. When Lindsay [Marias, Cam’s manager] and I first heard this demo and Sam came in singing, our jaws dropped. The emotion was so raw and honest and real. I love the juxtaposition of saying something very loud and publicly—to the point where it almost feels proud—but actually it’s something that makes you want to curl up in a ball.”

Girl Like Me

“This is the author's note at the end of the book. Natalie Hemby had come over and started playing a verse on the piano, and I was like, ‘Oh god, that is so sad.’ And she's like, ‘It's your story. This is your comeback story.’ It’s funny how sometimes you can’t recognize your own self. Writing this song was uncomfortable but in the best way, trying to pull lyrics out in the chorus (‘They’re going to give up on you/You're going to give up on them’). You can’t just become jaded. Children of the Nation [Ch 12]

Nathan’s bloody shirt was a loss, by this point, and the teen grudgingly discarded it at his grandfather’s insistence. England raised both eyebrows at the sprawling tattoo he caught a glimpse of before Nathan shrugged his jacket back on and zipped it up, but elected to bite his tongue about it.

Now was hardly the time for a lecture about poor life choices.

Out in the hall, Germany and China had Marius well and truly subdued - his hands tied behind his back with Germany’s belt (sacrificed for the cause). America gave the man a harsh glare as he ushered Nathan and his grandfather past the scene, and in return, Marius spat something threatening in Latin. Latin . England suppressed the shudder that crawled up his spine.

Surely, his ears had to be wrong. The language had been dead for millennia, and though it survived through texts and a resurgence of study and academics, its last native speakers had died long before this man’s time. The nation watched Marius warily from the edge of the breakroom, but once Nathan and his grandfather had been ushered out of sight with America, he seemed to lose interest, and settled down under Germany’s knee, still radiating fury and ire. Something about him made England's skin crawl...

“We’ll need to find somewhere secure to put this one.” Germany decided aloud, one knee still jammed painfully into Marius’ kidney. America hadn’t been wrong; this man was strong , and had he not warned Germany, the fight could very well have gone differently. That was...unusual. “At least until we know more about what is going on here.”

“A closet should do.” Chica scoffed. “All the smaller rooms come with an empty one. That, a belt, and a lock should be more than enough to hold him in that state.” He gestured to the human's bloodied lip, broken nose, and growing black eye. Marius growled low in his throat, and spat blood at the nation’s feet. Germany made a disgusted sound and wrinkled his nose.

“Alfred was not lying.”  He warned China as he climbed to his feet, keeping Marius’ awkwardly hunched to maintain control. “This man is much stronger than he looks.” The older nation seemed unphased.

“Then barricade the door.” China waved a hand in frustration. “Do I have to think of everything for you?” Germany wisely bit back his response, and marched Marius down the hall, in the opposite direction America had taken their other guests. England looked in dismay upon the bloody splatters drying against the wood and wallpaper, and frowned.

“What are we going to do about the break room?” He wondered out loud to Canada, and only partially rhetorically. “Any staff member who stumbles across this mess is bound to phone the authorities.”

“Aiya…” China shook his head, and shrugged out of his suit jacket, tossing it casually across the back of the chair Nathan had been sitting in earlier. “ I’ll take care of this mess.” He said while rolling up the sleeves of his dress shirt. “I’ve had more practice than either of you at removing blood from all sorts of surfaces.” Canada quietly traded a mildly concerned look with England, but neither nation protested.

It was probably best not to ask where all that practice came from.

“Right, then.” England stepped out of the room, with Canada in quiet pursuit. “We’ll, ah, go and catch up with America, in that case. I believe he was heading for the same room we used earlier?” He looked over for confirmation, and Canada nodded his head. For security reasons, every time the Nations came together for a world meeting, the chosen location was cleared out and locked down for the duration, using the best security available while still keeping them under the radar.

If nothing else, they already knew it was secure, and that there would be no prying eyes or ears around to listen in on anything that was said.

The meeting room in question was situated at the back of the building, with wide, arched windows that filled the room with natural light, unless one desired to close the blinds (the curtains, although lovely, were only for show). America was sitting on the edge of the edge of the conference table, drumming his fingers against his leg, while Nathan and his grandfather sat in chairs nearby. Kurt immediately fixed the nations with a stoic and wary glare, while Nathan seemed more interested in staring at the tabletop like a scolded child.

Which, England thought, he rather was.

“Ge-. Ah, Ludwig and Yao should join us soon,” England cleared his throat in an attempt to disguise his near slip as he and Canada took up seats along the rounded end of the table - not quite across from their mysterious visitors, but not directly beside them, either. “Then, I think, there are a few things that we need to discuss.” America started to drum his fingers again, and held his breath. There was an attempted murder-mystery happening right in their lap - he didn’t want to wait , he wanted answers .

Thankfully for the impatient young nation, it was only a few minutes more before Germany joined them at the table, having stashed the intruder somewhere safe and secure. China followed soon after with a self-satisfied smirk, and England thought it wise not to comment on how fast he’d finished cleaning up the bloodied kitchen. America saw all parties required in their seats, and stopped drumming his fingers.

“So….are you an alien?” He asked in a conspiratorial tone. Canada closed his eyes for a moment of strength, and England pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration. Really? Of all the questions he could have asked?

“Um...no?” Nathan couldn’t help a nervous smile as the silence was broken with, what he considered to be, the most ridiculous of the questions to come. “We’re pretty sure I’m mostly human. Mom was,” He glanced at Kurt, hesitating before continuing. “Gramps is, too.”

“What about your father?” England asked, continuing the line of thought. They might as well make it useful, now that it was in play. “Is there anything unusual about him that might have resulted in your... ability ?” America silently bit his tongue behind his teeth.

Don’t make an X-men joke. Don’t make an X-men joke. Don’t-

“We...don’t actually know about him.” Nathan cast a nervous sidelong glance toward his grandfather, as if seeking permission. When Kurt made no move to hush him, instead keeping his eyes on the people that had them ringed in, the boy scratched at the back of his neck nervously. “We don’t really know my dad at all, actually....Mom sort of had this one-night stand with the guy and then never saw him again.” He admitted.

“Oof.” America frowned. “Your dad sounds like a loser.”

“Judging by your reaction,” Germany spoke up with a quiet warning glance at America. “This is not the first time you’ve ‘miraculously’ healed from a grave injury?” He inquired Both Nathan and Kurt winced, though Kurt’s reaction was much more subdued, and Nathan specifically suddenly found the edge of the table incredibly interesting.

“Noooo, no, it’s not. I’ve, uh...I’ve been shot before.” Nathan admitted fidgeting nervously with the sleeve of his jacket “It’s. It’s happened a couple of times, actually. Got hit by a few cars, over the years. Got laid out by a skateborder going max speed and cracked my head open. Got clipped by the 7:12 to Canterbury and kind of died. Got-”

“Wait, wait, go back.” England interrupted. “You got hit by a train?”

“You died?!” America shouted. Kurt winced, but did not look surprised. He must have already known. Canasa thought. Was he there?

“I mean, I-I got better, right?” Nathan stammered. “And it’s not like it left a huge scar! Er, ah, well, at least not one most people would see-”

The opening notes of “Welcome to the Black Parade” suddenly began to plan, and Nathan snapped his mouth shut. All eyes turned to Kurt, who - slowly - took a hand off his cane, and reached it into his jacket pocket.

“That would be my phone.” The man looked at the caller ID, and with little more than a challenging look to Germany, swiped it open just as the vocals began, and raised it to his ear. “Cameron. What-.....” Kurt stopped to listen, and the stern line of his lips tipped into a frown. Just as cautiously, the man lowered the phone to the table, and tapped the ‘speakerphone’ icon. “He wants to speak to you.”

“Buongiorno.” The smooth voice of a stranger spoke up from the phone. “I hear you’ve found some friends of mine.”

In February 2010, Edwards released "I Knew You Were Trouble", which entered the United States at number one, making Edwards the second female artist in the history of the Hot 100 (after Mariah Carey) to debut multiple tracks—the other one was "Today Was a Fairytale" at number two—in the top five during a calendar year.

The song was the lead single from her fifth studio album, GOLD, whose songs she wrote by herself. GOLD, released on May 25, 2010, was a commercial and critical success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200, with opening week sales of 1.8 million copies, the 5th album to do so.

Later, it became the fastest-selling digital album by a female artist, with 878,000 downloads in a week. For this feat, Edwards received a listing in the 2010 Guinness World Records; she earned another entry in the book after 12 of GOLD’s tracks debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first female ever to achieve the feat.

Three of the album's singles—"I Knew You Were Trouble", "Heroes", and “Love Story"—peaked within the top ten in Canada, UAE, France, Germany, UK and Australia. The song "Heroes" won the Best Pop Solo Performance at the 53rd Annual Grammy Award. She performed the song during the ceremony.

Claire Suddath of Time felt she "delivered her comeback on-key and with a vengeance" and Jayme Deerwester of USA Today remarked that the criticism in 2007 seemed to have "made her a better songwriter and live performer".

Edwards won various other awards for GOLD, including The Album of The Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ won Record of The Year, Song of the Year and Best Short Form Music Video at the 53rd Grammy Awards in 2011, making her the second female artist ever to win six awards in one night, after Beyoncé.

She also won Woman of the Year by Billboard (2011), and Entertainer of the Year by the Academy of Pop Music (2010 and 2011) and the Pop Music Association in 2011. At the American Music Awards of 2010, Edwards won Artist of the Year and Favorite Pop/Rock Album. Been waiting a long time to play this one - it was quite a few years of looking to find a decent 12" copy (thanks Discogs!), and then it was one I was determined to save for an anniversary of KMG's passing. The original from the excellent "Black Mafia Life" is proto-G-Funk, but this version puts a just a touch of extra chaos (and bass) into the mix, courtesy of Cold 187um on both occasions. An ode to late-night partying and cognac, but still bringing the battle edge to the second verse, this has KMG handling the hook solo but going back and forth with Cold 187um on the mic. A much underrated tag team from the west!

Tobe Nwigwe ft. FAT : PEEP GAME

Another #GetTwistedSundays killer! I'm bringing this Texan back for a second appearance in the last four months, with a track I think a lot of you will really enjoy. The producer Nell brings a fresh style, with some great change-ups in the beat - and the other half of the bargain is held up with skills galore. Tobe absolutely crams meaning (and syllables) into his devastating monotone flow, and his wife FAT provides a great spoken-word-like breakdown in an efficient eight-bar appearance. This is a trio of brilliant artists (along with their video crew) doing amazing things.

BADBADNOTGOOD ft. Kaytranada & Snoop Dogg: Lavender (Nightfall Remix)

Canada's BBNG first released the original version of this track on their "IV" album, but Snoop Dogg heard it and somehow knew it could benefit from his own unique enhancement! This version ended up as an inclusion on his 2017 "Neva Left" album; his added verse addressing police brutality, in addition to the controversial video, thrust it into the consciousness of a much larger audience. 

DRS : All Time High

I was reminded of this track from the new "From The Deep" LP when DRS performed it live at a Manchester International Festival event recently. He's one of the most important artists the Manchester scene has ever had, with his influence spreading far and wide - whether fully acknowledged or not. While he's now mostly known for his drum & bass work, he was of course one-third of Broke 'n' English (alongside Strategy and Konny Kon) and this album has him displaying his Hip-Hop skills over the production of Pitch 92. 

Lowkey : Hand On Your Gun

If you like politics in your Hip-Hop, then Lowkey is someone you should definitely be checking for - a British MC of Iraqi descent, he brings his worldview to the mic with strength every time. His second album, "Soundtrack To The Struggle" gives us this stinging condemnation of some of the big players in the global arms trade, with ShowNProve providing the Wild West-themed track.

Kaytranada ft. Karriem Riggins and River Tiber : Bus Ride

A nice instrumental from the "99.9%" album. The guest star Karriem Riggins gets busy on the drums in a subtle way through most of the track before showing out right at the end with a little double-time flair!

"Travel Light" is now a year old and it's still getting just as much play as it did on release! Juga-Naut on production, Mr.Thing on the sharp cuts, and Tyler and Konny Kon putting it down on the mic make up a major league quartet.

Robert Glasper Experiment ft. Norah Jones : Let It Ride

As strong as this track is, it's not even one of my top three from "Black Radio 2", which speaks to just how good that album is! Mark Colenburg earns his money on the double-time drumming that you'd think had to be a programmed drum machine, setting a furious pace that the rest of the groove languidly follows. The bass and piano are low-key and do their thing without upstaging Norah Jones on the vocal of this classy cut.

Janelle Monáe : Cold War

This is an absolutely furious cut. The video is definitely worth a watch - similar to the one for Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U", it stays focused on her face for the entire running length and is packed with emotion, as are the lyrics. Clearly one of the standouts on "The ArchAndroid", with the themes of isolation and struggle articulated by one of the best artists of this era.

OutKast : B.O.B

I've been wanting to do the blend from "Cold War" to this for ages! One of my favourite tracks from this duo, this pretty much made my brain explode when I first heard it back in 2000. I was surprised to find out recently that this wasn't a big hit even on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts, but they were actively trying to go against the grain and a lot of the audience probably just wasn't ready. To me, this is Andre and Big Boi at the peak of their lyrical games, keeping up with a track that really would fit the name "organised noize" - but was actually produced by the group themselves alongside Mr.DJ. That's a real gospel choir you're hearing on the hook and the outro, a really serious guitarist letting loose all over the track, and a real MPC being beaten into submission for those drums. Stone classic from the "Stankonia" LP. Oh, and "got a son on the way by the name of Bamboo"? Well, time flies...

[The Alchemist] Cam'ron : Wet Wipes (Instrumental)

This fit the bill here as something electronic-sounding that was also half the speed of the frenetic OutKast track, allowing us to come back down to earth a bit. The Alchemist cooked up a thudding, menacing beat for what was a typically disrespectful Cam'ron track from 2006's "Killa Season". This was actually Alchemist's first MPC beat (he was a devotee of the ASR-10 up to this point) and has the chopping and aggression that is very reminiscent of a track he did years later, Raekwon's "Surgical Gloves".

The Lady of Rage : Raw Deal

I finally sat down to listen to the "Necessary Roughness" album from front to back for the first time recently, and I can confirm that it was indeed slept-on. This was probably a consequence of it being pushed further and further back by Death Row, until it finally got a very quiet release in 1997. If you'd forgotten about the skills that made her a people's favourite, here's a reminder over a Daz Dillinger and Tyrone Wrice beat, laid-back enough to give her the space to get busy. 

Glenn Lewis : Don't You Forget It (Curtis Lynch Remix)

FIRE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥! The original Glenn Lewis cut from "World Outside My Window") has always been a favourite of mine, and it's one you don't want to mess up with a clumsy remix - for example, the Desert Storm attempt with the most "missing the point" guest rap verse in music history. I can't remember how I found this one, but it stunned me - the re-interpretation is perfect. Lewis is from Trinidadian and Jamaican roots, and the move to connect with someone like London's Curtis Lynch for this remix was a natural but also an inspired move. It sounds like this one has been re-voiced rather than just swapping instrumentals, and it's a rootsy dancehall masterpiece with the drums, bass, and every single accent on point. Turn this one all the way up!

London Grammar : Non Believer

I'm not even sure what genre you'd count this as - Wikipedia claims "indie pop", but even that doesn't quite hit the mark. For me there are definite vibes of what they used to call "trip-hop" - I can imagine previous eras of Portishead or Massive Attack doing a tune like this. This track from "Truth Is A Beautiful Thing" is itself a melancholic beautiful thing, with Hannah Reid's crystal-clear vocals soaring over the moody beat.

Sean Price & Illa Ghee : 2Pac by the Locker

If you know "Juice", you know what this title is all about! I'd describe the track as "short and sweet", if there was anything remotely street about it. Sean P and Illa Ghee come through like a pair of brass knuckles as they do on every other cut on the "Metal Detectors" EP - just beasting.

Jake One : Gangsta Boy (Instrumental)

Coming through slamming like a new take on Dre's "Lyrical Gangbang", this is a monster of a beat from Jake One's "White Van Music Instrumentals". It had to be, since the MCs on the vocal version are the rugged neva smoove M.O.P.

Raekwon : Canal Street

Raekwon is one of the greatest picture painters in Hip-Hop history and this is an absolute art masterclass. From the first lines "All of our fathers is bank robbers, holding TECs/Eights of hero'n, shooting in the steps" he grabs your mind's eye and never lets it go until the track ends. Flawless street imagery all the way from "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...Pt.II" to such an extent that the video actually takes away from it! Icewater Productions bring a fairly well-used sample in that brings the crime-flick menace the lyrical content demands. One nice touch on the production side - the sudden turn up of the volume in a matter of a beat or two in the transition from the intro to the first verse - definitely makes it hit you in the chest.
