Review #9: Twinkling Watermelon
WARNING: THIS POST DEF CONTAINS SPOILERS. PLEASE READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THE DRAMA. (I will do my best to label spoilers, but I’m not perfect.)
Oh, we are SO BACK!!!
After a One Direction-esq hiatus, I have returned with my wit and thirst to discuss a drama that I loved.
✨Twinkling Watermelon✨
Of course, this wouldn’t be one of my reviews without the…
THIRST CORNER!!!!
I am being so fr when I say this man is gorgeous. His smile takes up his entire face and it makes me giggle and kick my feet every single time. Choi Hyun-Wook is not only so handsome but he plays the role of a kind, charming, stubborn and extremely loud 18 year old so well. Like, I think casting him for that role was the actual perfect choice.
Let’s just take a moment to look at him 🥰
Tumblr media
LIKE THAT SMILE COULD MELT ME IN AN INSTANT
(Also this scene was so cute like he’s so in love pls)
Okay anyway, moving on.
The cast of this drama was actually just way too cute in general. I caught myself so many times watching with the goofiest grin on my face as they all lowkey fell in love fr fr for the first time.
The plot and storyline was so interesting! I really love how they made Sign Language a central part and really shone a light on how difficult it is for deaf people in Korea specifically.
Also, time travel seems to be a trend in recent k-dramas (I’m not mad about it buuut. A Time Called You and Lovely Runner 👀)
Similarly to 25/21 I think they took advantage of the fact that Y2K fashion is popular rn and set most of the drama in 1995. It’s cool to see the similarities!
I think it’s hard to keep my attention for very long when watching dramas if the plot has a lot of filler, which this seemed to have in the middle. It took me a while to get through (the last like six episodes were so engaging tho).
So I felt very meh for the first 15 episodes and then episode 16 had me bawling every five minutes. A huge jump, I know.
(SPOILER) Lee Chan coming to terms with not being able to achieve his dreams while he was under in surgery actually kinda broke me as a person. I was not okay. Also when his grandma comes and they cry together :(. I had to actually pause and take a minute. I was not okay!!
I LOVED the way it ended, though. Eun Gyeol felt like he had failed just bc (SPOILER) Lee Chan still lost his hearing, but seeing the positive impacts that he made really warmed my heart. Like yes, his family had been content and happy before. But now things were so much better and his mom was able to thrive because she hadn’t been abused as long.
The soundtrack went back and forth between being boring and going so INCREDIBLY HARD. The cover they did of 볽은 노을 has been stuck in my head for days and I found the OG version on Spotify and I love it. Also, A Song For You makes me feel so nostalgic for my youth for some reason. I wanna never forget all of my shining moments.
That’s honestly what I walked away with from this drama. I want my youth (and my life in general) to shine so brightly in my memory. I wanna make the most of the time I have so that one day I can smile and know I lived.
Viva La Vida :)
My Rating for this drama is a solid: 9/10. (Definitely in my K-Drama top 20)
Reminder that these are simply my opinions. If this is your favorite drama, I don’t mean to offend you. Feel free to put what you loved/didn’t love in the comments. Just be kind and remember that everyone like different dramas. Also please be nice to me, I am but a normal person. :)

Beat & yo HCS!!!!!!!!! (I haven’t got to play jsrf yet so if something I say goes rlly against something in jsrf I’m sorry 😢)
BEAT
• Autism & Gay!!
• Without even meaning to, he’s seemingly the most charming of the GGs. As in like, I feel like if someone for a rival gang hanged out with him or talked for a couple minutes, they’ll realize he is fr just a little guy. It’s probably what makes him the ‘face’ of the GGs to other people. Everyone knows him & while some may not ‘like him’ and still wanna mess with the gang, at the end of the day I feel like everyone that knows Beat has some level of respect for him. (Yknow besides the ppl who fr want them gone/dead 💀)
• A little too trusting and or hopeful at times. He thinks their is promise in lots of people. He’s definitely not super dense though. He’s able to catch on when something weird is going on with someone he trusts or likes.. it just might take him a tiny bit longer to believe it.
• (This part is already semi canon) HE LOVES RECORDS!!!! He mainly goes for old rock, 90s metal & rock, edm, hip hop, and stuff similar. He has a good amount of records & loves getting them as gifts (even if he doesn’t know the band beforehand. He likes trying new music and bands)
• Speaking of music, he likes tagging along with other GG members to parties. He goes all out with his fits for raves especially :D he’d never go to one alone though because he likes knowing at least a couple people around him at big events and having someone to keep him company if he needs to walk away from everything going on for a bit.
•Sometimes he goes hours without having music actually playing thru his headphones but still has them on, especially on bad sensory days/moments.
(Also I think under those headphones he has ear piercings 👀👀 or he should have them at the very least..)
• While everyone else has a place they can go ‘home’ to at night or somewhere nice to sleep, Beat lives in the Garage/hangout place. He’s not like, sad or embarrassed about it though. He likes having his ‘own’ place to himself but he loves when others spend the night or a few days with him. (Mostly Gum, Corn, and Yo-yo do)
•Gum is his best friend :)
YO-YO
• This man would die for bright colors. He LOVES loud, bold, neon colors. He likes bold colors in his hair, on his clothes, of stuff he owns, just everything really.
•He has made a Kandi bracelet for each GG member..it’s almost like a tradition thing bc after a few days of someone joining them, they are gonna get one from him that usually says their name & whatever colors he thinks they’d like (or he just randomly asked them what their favorite color is out of nowhere and was like “no reason 🤭🤭” when they ask why he asked). Also if he really likes someone he will give them more than one *cough cough* like beat *cough*
• Loves his vidya games & is a nerd in general. Him and Garam can spend hours playing video games or talking about them. They are rlly good friends bc of it :) if they have their own set ups at home or wherever they are, they play multiplayer stuff together while talking over the mic.
•Garam & him also just hang out a lot in general and are always getting up to dumb stuff together. They probably dare each other to do the most random, crazy shit too.
• Is really good at pretending he doesn’t give a shit about something when he wants. He could hear the almost insulting thing said towards him and he’d just be like “😎 ok” but it does really get to him later. Sometimes he’s more likely to lash out at someone shit talking him tho.
•Just pushes negative feelings aside a lot in general bc he’s the kinda guy who wants to always have a good time with his friends & enjoy life as much as he can and ignore things that gets him down. (To a amount where he rlly shouldn’t..bc when ‘it hits’ it hits.)

I am 👀👀 at PGR, would you recommend? I play Genshin and Honkai Star Rail, so if it’s similar vibes and mechanics to them I’m in, just don’t wanna time sink into a game I won’t keep up with 😅
Understandable! I actually haven’t played this one first hand, but I hear its gameplay is much more similar to Hoyo’s other child Honkai Impact 3rd! c: I’m enjoying it so I personally would lean on recommending it but the gameplay has some differences compared to Genshin and Star Rail specifically so a lil bit on that- there’s the equip screen
Tumblr media
Memories are kinda like your relics/artifacts, as in each give special set bonuses and stats- but only raise just specific stats and are less random in nature- and the one rng based thing about them can be manually changed with an item so that was infinitely less stressful and I’m having a WAY better time regarding that here LOL weapons also do have a best in slot but those have a player controlled rate up! Character dupes are also useful here but they cycle rate up and some have farmable shards so it’s not impossible either!
As for story and exploration, that’s also not the same here- you’re not actively running around all the time and set a character to be the one you see on home screen while story is selected through chapters and plays visual novel style (with some exceptions, it seems?). It’s main story isn’t fantasy-ish either, but rather more sci-fi in a post apocalyptic setting, pretty bleak though they do have some side story content that’s light hearted and fun! Onto battles, some maps give you some degree of roaming, like-
Tumblr media
But ultimately it’s fast paced and fun for me! And most content stays doable aside from the ones specifically made to be a challenge. Auto clears are available for material stages too so grinding isn’t nightmarish! I know for some the charm is always exploring though, but that with the ever failing artifact hunting irreparably burned me out of Genshin (Star Rail’s auto mode is also GREATLY appreciated for that reason)… u_u
Oh, the dorm function is cute too, room decorating without getting too overwhelming (my teapot looks terrible LOL)
Tumblr media
Lastly there’s occasional cute mini games added in event cycles, like a rhythm game running right now and besides being a former rhythm game enthusiast, looking at their lil SDs dancing around warms my heart 😆
Hope anything I’ve said is helpful in deciding! :’D

i finally subscribed to dropout after seeing your posts about dimension 20 and game changer! i was wondering if you had any recommendations for campaigns (or other shows) to watch first? i've only seen clips or gif sets of all of them
OMG anon this makes me so so so so so happy and I hope you know what can of worms you just opened because this is one of my hyperfixations.
This is probably going to be a bit long (ETA: it was), so I'm throwing a cut down. I apologize in advance for the length. I am going to operate on you knowing very little background, so I apologize if I say things you already know. Just tryna cover my bases!
Hmmm okay. As far as campaigns for dimension 20 goes, it'll depend on your taste and how you like to do things.
Fantasy High is their first season, and if you like to watch things in order, I'd start there. I'd caution that this is true early days, and the cast (including Brennan, sometimes) are not as familiar with 5e yet, so please note that rules will be kinda wonky sometimes. Personally, I found it charming to watch them grow as players! Anyways, here is a bulleted list, in no particular order, that may or may not be helpful:
Fantasy High, Fantasy High: Sophomore Year (also referred to as D20: Live), Pirates of Leviathan, and The Seven, are all part of the same universe, released in the order I put them in. You can watch Pirates and the Seven without watching FH (they're side quests, which means they bring in guest players who are not of the main cast, and the seasons typically are shorter in episode quantity), but you might miss some easter eggs and references. Set in a world based on if John Hughes 80s movies vibes were translated to dnd! Very Breakfast Club right out the gate. I love it very much, and The Seven made me laugh and cry the most out of any season I think, as far as range of emotion goes.
If you don't care if it's about dnd, and want something shorter, I'd recommend Misfits and Magic. This was part of the Summer of Aabria Event, also a side quest, and she GMed a modified game of Kids on Brooms (Brennan is a player in this one). Subverting tropes and ideas that stemmed from... well, you know, that wizard series. And it made me cry like a baby and I loved the dynamic between the players very much. It's only four episodes, with a holiday special as well. It's a good place to start if you wanna get used to D20's edited production format.
I have a soft spot for The Unsleeping City (and its second season), as it has some of my very favorite Intrepid Heroes (this is how the fandom refers to the main cast of d20) player characters. It's Brennan's love letter to New York City, and it's an urban fantasy with very heroic themes. This is a Great full season to start with in my opinion!
My personal favorite season is A Crown of Candy. Please don't start with this one. It will be devastating. Low magic fantasy akin to Game of Thrones, but with way less misogyny and way more anthropomorphic foods. I know how it sounds. Believe me. Don't start here. (You can do what you want, really, but I have to be able to say I warned you.)
A Starstruck Odyssey uses a modified version of Star Wars 5e, and they made probably the most busted overpowered characters I've ever seen them make. It's really fun, and if you love space, you'll love this! I also loved this because while I'm very familiar with regular 5e, SW5e is completely different. So watching them do things I've never even heard of was incredibly refreshing.
Aabria also DMed a side quest that mixed 5e with Good Society, and it's regency meets the FeyWild. RP-heavy, and shenanigans abound. Absolutely unhinged repression arcs that had me screaming into my hands. A Court of Fey and Flowers!
Escape from the Bloodkeep is their first side quest, and notable guest star in this season is Matthew Mercer himself. It's a Lord of the Rings parody where everyone plays... a villain? 👀 Somehow incredibly wholesome regardless. This is also a very good side quest to start with, if you want a taste of how Brennan DMs.
As far as other shows go, Game Changer IS excellent. I would also recommend the spin-off Make Some Noise. Other shows I love are:
Breaking News Network: It will make you laugh. Pretty much guaranteed. They have people read from a teleprompter and they do not know what it will say. They are not allowed to smile or laugh.
A message from the CEO, starring Brennan Lee Mulligan: You might find most of these on YouTube already, but basically Brennan plays multiple beleaguered CEOs trying to make publicity videos for their products. Satirical and hilarious.
Dirty Laundry: Guests come in and submit secrets to the production team, and the host will read a secret out loud, and they try to guess whose secret it was. I have learned some truly insane things about people.
Total Forgiveness: Two cast members come up with challenges for each other, on the premise that if they complete the challenge, the production company will give them money to go towards their college loans. It's incredibly funny, but also if you suffer from secondhand embarrassment easily, this may not be for you.
Um, Actually: This is another game show! Players are given prompts where part of the prompt is incorrect, and they have to buzz in with the correction. Jeopardy rules: they have to say Um, Actually first, or else no points. The most pedantic show (affectionate).
Jesus I am so sorry about the length, and probably the incoherent nature of this entire thing. I could give you a breakdown of every single season of d20 easily, in chronological order, but I feel like I'm already on the verge of overwhelming and scaring you away LMAO.
Thank you for indulging me as well. I love talking about Dimension 20 and Dropout is truly the best streaming service I'm paying for currently.

Ash? 👀
Shouto and enemies to lovers! No details, I wanna see what you come up with, you're free to do whatever you want! 🤍❤️
Raffy? 👀 I think I actually have a wip like this that hasn’t seen the light of day in like a year lmao.
yeah, I have something I started a while ago that’s kinda like this, but it was hella vague, so I’m going to expand on it bc I honestly don’t think I’ll ever actually write it now.
warnings: this one is angsty & toxic. cheating, manipulation, revenge sex, violence. reader has a personality and it’s not always a good one.
au: altered timeline. follows canon events, but everyone’s older. Shouto’s an adult & a Pro Hero.
You’re part of the league and you’ve been with Dabi for a little over a year now. You love each other, but not healthily.
It seems like you’re always fighting for one reason or another. You make up quickly, but his jealousy is a very sore spot in your relationship, as is yours.
After a particularly nasty fight, you set out on a mission to make him jealous and you succeed with flying colors by hanging off of some new recruit all night during a party.
He deals with that by getting blackout drunk and burying his insecurities inside of someone else.
You walk in to his room at the hideout the next morning and find him in bed with someone else
The look on your face makes him realize that maybe he took things too far. No, he definitely did. He regrets it immediately and he’s hopping into his boxers to chase after you, but you’re gone.
You don’t know where to go, but you know that you can’t go back to face him, so you end up wandering the city, looking every bit as miserable as you feel.
You almost literally bump into someone, but you stop yourself before you can and apologize without looking at them, then go to continue on your way.
All of a sudden you feel a warm hand on your shoulder. One that feels almost as warm as Touya’s.
Shouto asks if you’re alright, noting that you look upset. You insist that you’re fine, but now you’re panicked bc A) he’s a hero & B) he’s Touya’s brother.
And then you realize. He’s a hero. AND he’s Touya’s brother who he despises. So when Shouto asks if you’re sure and offers to buy you a coffee, if you might like the company, you don’t hesitate to say yes.
You’re surprised to find that you actually do like him. He’s kind and charming, in a way. You know that it’s stupid. You’re running with a league of villains, so this is destined to fail. There’s no need to get attached.
There is a need to get even though. You chat and shamelessly flirt with Shouto, explaining that you’ve just had a bad day. He says that he has all day to fix that.
He’s completely taken with you. He thinks you’re gorgeous and sweet and just so easy to talk to, which is huge for him, because talking to people isn’t usually this effortless for him.
You sit there until sometime in the afternoon and he invites you to lunch where you continue your conversation.
Afterward, you stroll around until you conveniently end up near his apartment and he very nervously invited you up.
You start to feel guilty for using him to get back at his brother, because he is such a nice guy. And there’s nothing wrong with that, right? Why does Touya hate him so much anyway? He doesn’t actually even know him.
Regardless, you head up with him and you chat for a while longer before you make the bold move to sit in his lap. He’s flustered, but he doesn’t ever stop you.
You two hook up and you can’t help but compare the experience to the first time you hooked up with Touya, back when you knew him as just Dabi.
Shouto’s so sweet and careful with you. It feels like more than just a shallow hookup, but you keep telling yourself that’s all it is. That’s all it can be.
Unless….no. You can’t.
He ends up falling asleep beside you and you take a picture of you laying naked with him in bed, but when you go to send it to Touya, you can’t. You feel too guilty and Shouto has been so kind. He seems so understanding. Maybe if you tell him the truth..
You don’t. But you also don’t leave and you don’t send the photo. You stay and reason that maybe this could be a fresh start. He doesn’t have to know who you really are and you can leave Touya and the League in your rear view.
Except you’re not getting away from Touya that easily. He gives you space, reluctantly at first, but then he actually tries to live without you. Out of pure spite, of course. Especially when he hears a rumor that you’re dating a pro hero.
When he realizes after a couple months that all the meaningless sex and substances in the world can’t replace you, he goes looking for you. He’s shocked and enraged to find that the rumors are true and that you’re dating his brother of all people. But he reasons that he deserves it after what he did to you.
He tracks you down at your new apartment and waita for Shouto to leave before he lets himself in through the window.
You’re less than surprised to see him. You’d been expecting him to turn up eventually, but what you don’t expect is that he doesn’t seem angry.
He’s not all fire and brimstone like he usually is. He seems genuinely remorseful and he actually starts begging you to come back. Says that he loves you and that he knows he hasn’t proven that. That he hasn’t done with the right way, if he wants to. Says he needs you. That he’ll fix things if you’ll please just give him once last chance.
And you do. Despite the fact that you’ve come to realize that you love Shouto, you love Touya and he seems like he means what he says. So you ghost Sho. You block his number and disappear to be with Dabi again.
It devastates him. He doesn’t know what he didn doesn’t understand what went wrong. He agonized over it for months.
Until Touya’s big reveal.
You’re there to witness his fight with Shouto and you know that he’ll try to kill him, so you get between them. You tell Touya the truth. That you slept with Shouto initially to get back at him, but that you fell in love with him.
You beg for him to spare Shouto and swear that you’ll never forgive him if he hurts him and he just looks at you, a tear of blood on his cheek and asks, “Why? Why him of all people?!”
Meanwhile Shouto is just being emotionally beaten with one trauma after another and this is the icing on the cake. He snaps and tries to capture you, swearing that you’ll rot in prison where you belong, but Touya grabs you and you escape.
You and Touya never speak of the incident again, but it leaves an obvious gap between you two.
Shouto spends the next few weeks coming to terms with his anger. He knew that he loved you. He had debated telling you so the day that you left and he wishes he had. He wonders if maybe you’d still be here with him.
He reasons that you’re a good person. He knows that. He saw it. You’re good and kind and you deserve better than the life you’re living.
So he reaches out to you again a nod is surprised to find his number isn’t blocked. He calls and texts and begs you to meet with him, but it doesn’t take much for you to agree.
You slip out one night and remain oblivious to the fact that Touya has followed you. He slips in through the bedroom window when you go up to Sho’s apartment to speak with him and listens in to your conversation, as tough as it is for him to hear.
Shouto doesn’t let you speak. He says that you don’t need to. He understands and he believes that you are a good person who can do good things. He wants to help you and get you on the right path, so that you can be safe and happy. That’s all he wants for you, even if he can’t be with you, because he loves you too.
That’s when Touya bursts in and sucker punches him. Starts beating the ever living fuck out of him. Sho gets in a few shots, but neither of them will use their quirks with you standing so close.
You try to pry Touya off of him, begging him to stop. He knocks Shouto out and goes to continue beating him to death when you throw yourself over Shouto’s unconscious body.
You look up at Touya with tears and promise that you’ll be his. You say that you love him and you’ll never leave. You’ll always be his if he will just let him live.
Only this time he realizes that you’ll never just be his. That you can’t be. That you shouldn’t be. He vibrates with rage and blue flames run along the right side of his body. For a second you think he’s just going to kill you both, but he doesn’t.
He turns and punches a hole through the wall as his flames recede. You can see the trickles of red tears on his cheek when he breaks down for just a moment and says that he doesn’t know what he’s going to do without you, but he knows that he can’t have you. That he shouldn’t, because you deserve everything that Shouto can give you. A home. Marriage. Kids. Happiness. He can’t offer you any of that.
“I’ll always love you, doll. Just remember that much, please,” is all he says before he goes to disappear from your life for good. You promise that you’ll always love him too and that you’re sorry things turned out this way. Maybe in another life, you could be happy together.
He clings to that thought as he goes, dreaming of a world where the two of you could have your own happy ending, because he knows that he won’t find one in this lifetime. He had hope when he was with you, but no longer.
Shouto comes to a moment later and you tend to his wounds, apologizing and telling him that everything will be okay. He just looks at you and nods, a tender smile on his face, despite the pain he must be in, and tells you that he knows it’ll be okay. He has you and that’s all he needs.
