BBU Community Days: Day 2
@bbu-on-the-side
So one aspect about the BBU I've thought about a bit but would love some other opinions on is second languages. Specifically for pets.
So like, would they be conditioned into forgetting they can speak it, somehow? Certainly reading/writing it I imagine working the same way conditioning does to stop them reading/writing their first language, but what about speaking? What if, as in my OC Lea's case, the handlers don't know they speak another language? Do they forget they can, but are still able to? Alternatively, do they forget the language entirely, or do they know they can speak it? Or do WRU (or other companies) use those pets, train pets that offer translation services?
I think they'd want to replace people sign languages with a simpler sign language designed for pets, as well as definitely keeping lip-reading to make things easier, but for other languages... how would it work? I mean, I can't imagine a lot of owners liking their pet speaking a language they can't, right? What if their pet insults them *gasp*? Can't have the... uh... good name of WRU being damaged, now, can we?
So, yeah. Second languages! Languages in general! How would they work for pets?
#bbu#box boy universe#bbucommunity#day 2#ill be interacting with other peoples posts when i have the energy#i keep having to get up early to do exam invigilating and last night was my first swordfighting in two weeks so good but tiring#hopefully at the weekend ill be able to do more of the community aspects of community days lol#dyk i almost did linguistics at uni#my grades werent good enough sadly and they didnt offer foundation courses in it#but this is one of those times i realise my interest in language never went away#different avenue obviously but still#also tried to do psychology at a level but they cancelled that#:(#anyway also: my ocs speak a lot of languages#would really fill up one of those 'in this classroom we speak' boards easily

Seven Days Of Study ~ Kim Namjoon
You reread Namjoon’s text several times, sighing greatly. With a big test coming up next week Namjoon had promised to help you study, but instead he found himself stuck in the confines of his studio for the next seven days.
“You could always study in the studio? That way I’m still nearby,” he proposed.
The last thing you wanted to do was get in his way, unsure with how to answer. You looked to the floor, scratching your hands together. Namjoon could read you like a book, taking your hands in his. “I promise nobody will mind, especially not me, just try it, see how you get on.”
So, just three days later you found yourself in Namjoon’s studio, head stuck in a book trying to find the perfect source for your essay question.
“Coffee?” Namjoon asked, walking through the door, handing you a mug. You had become so fixated by the pages before you, you hadn’t even heard him leave the room. You reached out for it, not looking up, but Namjoon moved it away. “You need to have a break, just twenty minutes, you’ll do yourself more harm.”
“I’m fine.” You protested, but Namjoon wasn’t having it.
He grabbed your book, folding the top corner of your page. “Why don’t you tell me about what you’re studying, see how much of it you’ve remembered.”
“Well, the book looks at human behaviour in children, how they adapt to language just after they’ve been born.” Namjoon nodded intently, knowing how passionate you were about the subject. “And they do this by…damn, I forgot.”
Namjoon chuckled, sliding the book back your way. “See, breaks are what you need. Now, drink up and I’ll let you restart again in quarter of an hour.”
This continued for the rest of the day, Namjoon constantly providing you with breaks, providing you with little snacks he found in the kitchen, or a funny video he’d seen on the internet.
By the second day you had remembered exactly what you needed to and began to make yourself little revision cards.
Namjoon had headed to the studio early, telling you to head over whenever you were ready. You knocked and walked in, Namjoon turning to greet you. “Hey gorgeous,” he waved.
“Hey…what’s all this?” Your eyes were drawn to the desk you’d settled on yesterday, there were gel pens, stickers, paperclips, everything you could have needed. “Did you do this.”
He nodded, walking by your side, wrapping his arm around your waist. “I thought you could do with a bit of help getting started, so I stopped by the stationary store this morning and grabbed a few resources.”
“You have no idea how much this means to me, thank you,” you smiled, pressing a loving kiss to his lips.
With all your cards finished, day three commenced the memory test. You continued to whisper as you read the cards, turning them over before trying to recall the information.
“Did you say something?” Namjoon asked, turning around in your desk chair. You looked up apologetically, unaware you’d spoken so loudly.
“Just revision,” you smiled, showing him your cards, “sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you, I’ll shut up.”
He chuckled, walking over to sit beside you, taking the card out of your hand. “You didn’t disturb me love, let me help you.” He snatched the card out of your hand, reading it for himself. “Right, tell me the main reason for child’s speech acquisition.”
“Naturism!” You squealed, smiling as Namjoon nodded his head. “It’s the belief that language is installed in children.”
“See, I don’t know what you’re stressing about, you’re going to smash this exam!” He picked up another card, once more reading the information. “How early do children learn language?”
You thought for a moment, being able to memorise the card. You’d written it in red and put a sticker of a dog in the top left corner. Your mind knew it word for word. “Before they’re born, in the uterus.”
Namjoon clapped, leaning forward to kiss you. “Correct! Wow, that’s actually quite fascinating, so they can hear you talk before they’re even born.”
“Yeah, even in the mother’s tummy their ears pick up on sounds, which is why people talk to baby bumps.” He chuckled, picking up your study book, reading the blurb for himself.
“Damn, my girl really is smart.”
You spent the following day just doing your own thing. You felt guilty enough that’d you distracted Namjoon, so spent the day in one of the empty studios, just going over everything. Namjoon was able to crack on with his mixtape whilst you studied hard.
Time had passed by when he knocked on the door, walking in to see you for the first time in the day. “The boys are ordering takeout, so I’ve added on your usual, I want to make sure you get something in you today.”
“Thank you Joon, tell the boys I’ll pay them back in a bit.” He shook his head, walking over to rest his head on top of yours.
He looked down at all the new notes that you’d written throughout the day, smiling to himself. “You don’t have to pay them, call it my treat, a little something because I am so proud of you.”
“I don’t want you to pay for things for me,” you whispered, tilting your head back to look up at his tired face. You poked his button nose lightly making him squirm, “this is a one-time thing.”
“Yes boss!”
After filling up on takeout, you found yourself in a bit of a food coma the next day. It was your last day before your exam, so you wanted it to go perfectly. You took the familiar route to Namjoon’s studio, deciding to surprise him with some breakfast from his favourite café.
When you walked into the studio you were shocked, the room was messy, he could barely keep his eyes awake, his trademark silver locks were all scruffy. “What’s going on?” You asked, handing him the sandwich you’d bought.
“I stayed up all last night,” he informed, mumbling a thanks for the food. “I’ve finished the demo I’ve been working on so I can spend all of today with you, helping you to revise for the big day tomorrow.”
He touched your heart greatly, as your hands ran through his hair. A little yawn escaped him making you giggle, “you didn’t have to do that for me.”
“Yes, I did. I know how much this means to you, so I want to be here to support you.”
“B- “
“-no arguments, now sit, we’ve got a busy day of studying ahead of us.”
The two of you spent the whole day going over and over your notes. If you didn’t know it now, then you surely never were going to know it. As the clock hit seven, Namjoon began to shut all his computers down. “Home time,” he informed you.
“Joon, it’s seven?”
“I know, but you’ve got a big exam in the morning, so you need plenty of sleep. You’ll drive yourself up the wall if you keep looking at these, I’d much rather tuck you up in bed and make sure you get some beauty sleep.”
“Will you cuddle me?” You innocently asked, helping him to pack all your things away.
He walked over, and laced his hand with yours, locking the studio door, “of course I will.”
Exam day soon came around, the sixth and last day of stress and worry. Namjoon woke you up with a massive breakfast, helping you to go over the last of your notes. Yesterday he’d made you write a list of things you wanted to go over the morning of the exam to stop you doing too much.
“Right, good luck today, I’m sure you’ll smash it, give me a text later or something and I’ll see you tomorrow.” He still had work himself, so said his goodbye at his flat. After your exam this morning you were spending the day with your friends, celebrating the end of term.
“Joon, thank you so much for just being incredible this past week, I wouldn’t be able to do all of this without your support.” He leaned over to kiss you lovingly, snatching a bite of your toast as he did so.
You chuckled as he pulled away, a smear of jam up his cheek. “What?” He asked, confused as to why you were laughing. You reached over, wiping the jam away. “Oh.”
“Never change Kim Namjoon,” you smiled, waving him goodbye as he headed to the studio once more.
As you watched him walk away the nerves began to build, the one person that had kept you calm throughout this entire time had gone for the last time, and now the only person there to support you, was you.
You entered the exam hall, repeating Namjoon’s words in your head. As he tucked you up in bed, he gave you the sweetest speech about how your grades wouldn’t define you and that you’d find your way in life regardless of a couple of exams.
The hall was silent, lots of stressed bodies beginning to panic as the invigilator began the exam. Just as you had hoped your revision cards were at the front of your mind, most of the information rolling as you moved you pen along the page.
You couldn’t have imagined the exam going so well, and as you left the exam hall, you were ecstatic with how things had gone. You couldn’t wait to tell Namjoon, sending him a text as soon as you got out.
I knew you could do it, I’m so proud of you baby, enjoy your night, I love you.
His reply was instant, words could never express how happy he was for you.
Of course, the evening you spent with friends was great, but you couldn’t wait to see Namjoon and tell him all about it.
With a slight heavy head, you made your way to the studio once more, running down the corridors to get to his studio. The door was open awaiting your arrival, his arms open for you to walk into. You ran into them, leaping up with your legs wrapped around his waist, catching you effortlessly.
“So, I’m guessing it went well?”
“So well Namjoon!” You chuckled, peppering kisses along his jaw. “For the first time I can honestly say I’m feeling so confident about this, I genuinely believe I’ve passed. I answered all the questions, remembered my theorists, I couldn’t have done any better.”
He smiled down at you, kissing you sweetly. “I am so proud of you, this past week in the studio has been so worth it to see you achieve. You’re so smart and dedicated, you deserve all the success you’re going to get from this.”
Your eyes scanned the studio, all your notes were gone, the torment of two years of studying had disappeared. “Thank you for being there for the past week, you might not realise how special you are, but I appreciate you greatly.”
“You’re welcome love, it’s been amazing to spend so much time with you, even we were stuck in the studio. I love you.”
“I wouldn’t have had it any other way, I love you too.”

Why I Fucking Hate Going To A Private School
Before you think I’m being ungrateful and all that, hear me out first. I’m not saying all private schools are bad but I spent my secondary education in one and although it does have some perks, I fucking hate it.
1. The Longer Days
My first bell goes off at 7.25 in the morning, meaning I have to get up extra early in the morning just to make it to school on time. In my 5th year, I started not giving a fuck and I sometimes got to class at 8 or I only got in later in the day for the sake of attendance. Anyway, my school had(has) 11 periods of classes each day, 40 minutes per period. I spend 9 hours in school every. fucking. day.
So let’s compare this to that of a public school. Public schools here have only 5 to 6 hours of school in a day, giving them the afternoon and night off for self-enriching activities or time to study by themselves. Not only do they have such short schooling hours, but each period only lasts for 30 minutes. That 10 minute difference might not seem like a lot but trust me, when it accumulates, it is so much time.
2. You literally don’t have time for anything else
So I’m a pianist and a singer who sits for music exams as well as I have classes to go to. Imagine this: I only get home at around 5pm, eat dinner at 6pm and only have around 2 hours after to do a shit ton of homework, do house chores, practise playing the piano, and/or go to a class.
Let me tell you this. It is very, very, easy to fall behind. And oh god you do not know how scary it is to fall behind because the work load keeps piling up. At this point, you might think that I’m just exaggerating at the amount of work I have. I kid you not, I am not even close to exaggerating. Our school makes sure we have the bare minimum of 3 revision books per subject and honey, that’s not all. The teachers love adding more books to the syllabus because they think it’s good for us. Milk is good for you but I’m not gonna drown myself in it.
3. The amount of tests
I’m already so sleep deprived. What do you mean I have another test tomorrow? Tests. Every. Week. And if it’s not a test, it’s the term exam. Now the frequent testing was my school’s idea and it doesn’t occur as frequently in other private schools but good god I wish I were dead. Okay let’s try to add this up.
2 hours of free time - one pile of homework - extra curricular activities - tests to study for = sleep deprivation at its best
We are always stressed out. Exam season is every day.
4. How suffocating it is
I have severe anxiety and depression, which have only gotten worse throughout the years I spent in that school. Admittedly, it was probably due to the fact that I am in the most elite class in the whole school.
Oh you’re from the best class? Doesn’t that mean you have your shit together and that you’re good in your academics?
HeLLL NO
The people in that class are so competitive and for some reason, also a very rowdy bunch. You end up working in groups with some people who you will have to try very hard not to punch in the mouth. Yes, there are some people in public schools who are exactly the same kind of nuisances but some kids are just so privileged it’s like they pay someone to do the thinking for them. It really doesn’t help that I’m an introvert and I require a lot of peace and quiet.
If my hours in school were shorter and I was allowed to spend a lot less time with these assholes, I’d be able to keep my problems at bay.
5. Some things you just need to do on your own
When I was in my primary education and I went to a public school, I had time outside of school to go for my extra curriculars and tuition if I was weak at certain subjects in school. The advantage of this was that I had the option to choose who my tuition teacher was so that I could make the best choice for myself in order to succeed.
When you go to a private school, you’re stuck with whatever teacher the school assigns to you. And just because it’s a private school doesn’t mean all the teachers are good. Sure, not all of them are bad and I have some teachers there I really like but keep this in mind: every teacher has a different way of teaching. Some ways just didn’t suit my way of learning even though it suited that of my peers.
What I ended up doing was I took certain days off school, called in sick (which I often am because my anxiety is very severe so I get a lot of physical ailments from it and I have a major gastric problem) and tried to catch up on the syllabus since I didn’t have time at night after school.
MORE WORK MEANS LESS TIME TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU’RE WORKING ON
6. The difference between me and my peers
It’s no surprise that a lot of my peers and my friends are from very well-to-do families and quite a few of them had mansions, ferraris, and were overall just living the dream. I, myself, am not from a rich family. At best, we’re middle class citizens who do their best to make it through. My family works hard to support me in my education but it doesn’t make it any less stressful for me. While I am mostly immune to peer pressure, it is evidently harder for me to cope with everything when I don’t have someone waiting on me hand and foot. My schoolmates mostly very privileged people (and not all of them are assholes really. some are absolutely wonderful) and they have a lot less to worry about.
7. Public school students don’t understand
It’s not that they never understand what private school students have to go through, it’s that most of the time, they just assume we’re spoiled based on face value. Sure we have air conditioners when we study but so what? Sure most of the students here are from rich families. That doesn’t mean we have it easier.
People set standards and expectations to high for us, we have no choice but to work our hardest to come close to them. Because our parents chose to put us in a private school, we have to work twice as hard to make sure everything is worthwhile. I acknowledge that public school students work hard too but in some cases, it really is easier for a public school student. (most of the time it’s easier to get away with things)
Take for example, we’re not trusted to grade our own students so external invigilators are sent in to do the grading for us instead. On the other hand, my public school friends don’t have to worry about any of this. (Mind you, I’m from Malaysia)
With certain privileges comes restrictions.
And that, my friends, is why I fucking hate going to a private school

The CAT 2010 test day is approaching nearer for many test takers. It is time you keep in mind what you are supposed to do and also not supposed to do on the test day. In this exclusive article, MBAUniverse.com brings to you the DO's and DON'Ts of the CAT 2010 test day.
1) Do not discuss what you have not done Ever had someone sit next to you in an exam who would always ask you about the topics you did and didn't cover, right before an exam? Suddenly all those topics you had thought so trivial, the other night, start seeming so very important. Remember that spiraling feeling in the pit of your stomach, threatening to make you sick even before the paper began? We definitely don't want that happening before CAT. Do not discuss what you left out or didn't focus much on.
2) Try not catching the contagion of âtension'. Engage yourself in solitude Before any paper, you find test takers huddled in grave discussions about how the test is going to be extremely tough and end up feeling unprepared. Confidence is crucial for performance, so avoid these 'tension groups' like the plague. And if you don't find anyone with a similar approach, you would still be better off alone.
3) Do not be late If you're rushing to the CAT centre with one eye on the road and the other on your watch, don't be surprised to find your nerves fried by the time you reach. Be there early, with plenty of time to relax and get used to your surroundings. Find out well in advance where you will be seated, and double check your admit card and stationery. In case you are late, do close your eyes for a moment and take a few deep breaths to calm yourself.
4) Know what you can carry in the exam hall Carefully sift through the guidelines in the admit card and make yourself aware of the rules and regulations for the CAT exam. Know what you can and can't carry. There have been innumerable cases where students thought they were allowed to carry a certain kind of equipment and had to face a lot of problems at the center. The CAT exam is a serious affair and you can expect the invigilators to be strict as far as discipline is concerned.
5) Do not relax till the last minute. The war is not won till the last battle is won. Neither is it lost till you lose the last battle Once the bell rings and you start with the paper, do not hold back. Whether you do well, or not, your focus should be to give it your best shot. So many people from the IIMs that we have spoken with have later confessed that they really thought they had blundered up their paper. Many a times, it's just paranoia.
6) Do not remind yourself of the tension by watching others Sometimes we get tensed just watching other people who are tensed. Do not pay heed to any surprising remarks that a fellow test taker makes after watching the paper! When you are in the exam hall, keep your eyes to the paper and ears preferably closed. Literally, closed! Consider earplugs, maybe cotton balls, it worked for me when I took the exam! But be sure to check with your centre in case they prohibit that.
7) Do not let your eyes off the familiar stuff in the paper. This is what would get you into the IIMs Your core competence is what will get you ahead of the pack. Besides, the CAT is no time to experiment. Make sure you are done with all the questions you are confident about, disregarding or giving lower priority to even those questions that may appear simple but you are not very familiar with.
8) Do not forget that there are enough questions in CAT that could fetch you enough to get a Call The CAT was designed to be too lengthy for an average student to complete. Some may feel pressure thinking about this. But it really is a blessing in disguise, there are enough questions and variation to provide you with a considerably greater opportunity to fare well. Think what it would be like if there were just 4 questions, and you knew the answer to only 1. Get the point?
9) Do not come out saying ..." My God I did not spend enough time on the areas of my strength" Keep your eyes peeled for questions that bare resemblance to areas that you are most confident about. If there is any question that is worth a little extra time, it's the question that you have cracked several times already. Do not take chances by letting your mind wander over any other question, no matter how tempting, until you are sure that you have tackled all the questions relating to your strength areas first.
10) Last but not the least... "During the exam do not let your thoughts delve on the question "what if I do not crack CAT?" Focusing on negative thoughts during the paper, such as "what if I don't do well", is not going to help anyone. You will be losing out on time, energy, and confidence. Instead, keep your thoughts engaged with the paper, your current question, your time management. You take care to put in your best efforts and let the rest take care of itself.
