Today in: Clones that deserved better!
Issue #1
-SCORCH-
Tumblr media
Scorch belonged to the clone commando Delta Squad from the beloved videogame "Republic Commando", which came before the Clone wars series aired.
Along with his companions: Sev, Fixer and Boss. Scorch was the demolition expert of the Squad and the one with the most heart and sense of humor, arguably the one with the most personality. You could easily compare him to Hardcase or Wrecker, having a similar archetype. He, along with Sev, became a fan favorite thanks to his charismatic writing.
If you have NOT played Republic commando, I totally recommend it. You can currently find it on steam or switch and it's a very fun game to play if you are a Clone wars fan.
Tumblr media
Delta squad appears in the Clone wars series only for a short cameo and only Boss got a short speaking line. So it was more than obvious that RC fans would want to see more representation of the beloved characters.
Then we got the Bad Batch...
Tumblr media
I don't know who this guy is... but this is not Scorch.
I do understand they needed a face for the commando leader of Tantiss and they did not want to miss the opportunity to gain some nostalgia points with a beloved Republic Commando character. (I could rant hours about how The Bad Batch did all commando clones dirty by reducing them to novelty storm troopers, but that's a rant for another day.) But did it HAVE to be Scorch? Considering the "personality" this TBB-Scorch has, I think Fixer or even Boss could have been an arguably better pick. But since Scorch was a fan favorite he was the one chosen, and he was also the one BUTCHERED for it.
TBB-Scorch has little to no personality and what little we manage to see it drastically different from the Scorch in the video game and that's very disheartening to see for a fan of the character.
Having a model with the painted armor is not enough to give fans the representation they deserve. Specially when it comes to a character with a recognizable personality.
It would be like having Fives suddenly be a cold and loyal trooper that will do anything Pon Krell did without questioning. Or have Wrecker suddenly be the background character that had no speaking lines and was only there to guard the door.
Or have Echo disappear for an amount of episodes when he could-- oh wait....
This "character" could easily be replaced by any other commando with a cool looking armor and it wouldn't change a thing other that fans pointing and saying "OMG I KNOW THAT GUY!"
(I'm not even sure his name is even mentioned... but take that with a grain of salt, I might be wrong. I need to re-watch the third season of The Bad Batch for the third time. )
Sure, we could argue that there is a reason to why Scorch is the way he is in TBB. Maybe he was brainwashed like the CX Clones or Maybe the trauma of loosing his companions, his brothers he was born and raised with since a pod and with whom he experienced a lot of things together, made him a cold, empty husk... but if that was the case, SHOW US THAT!
Scorch could have easily been a good counterpart to Crosshair. They are both Commandos (in a sense) and they both lost their brothers in traumatic ways (allegedly). But while Scorch gave up and became a mindless follower of the Empire, Cross woke up and refused to be brainwashed like the rest.
I know I'm being too harsh.
After all, it's somehow noticiable that TBB was left unfinished. My theory is that Disney decided to pull the plug and was "nice" enough to give the project one last season. But all the ideas and all the stories they clearly wanted to tell were not going to fit on one last season, so a lot of it was cut and rushed.
It is sad, and I would have loved to see what plans they originally had. Maybe they had more plans for the commandos, maybe Scorch had a bigger role or an explanation to his loyalty towards Hemlock and the empire.
Or Maybe he was just painted in to get Republic commando fans to watch The Bad Batch.
We might never know...
Tumblr media
Overall...
It's kind of sad that was all the representation we got of these beloved characters.
I know their stories are in "Legends" and many Legends characters have been changed for the sake of canon.
But there is Changing, and then there is Butchering.
And I think Scorch, and the Delta Squad, deserved way better.

The Bad Batch Ep S2 Ep 11 - Thoughts & Spoilers
Spoilers,
Spoilers,
Spoilers,
So everything's beneath the cut!
I know with the Mando S3 premiere, this episode may have gotten even less attention than the rest of the show. BUT this episode had some incredible things, so here are *some* of my thoughts.
FIRST:
Tumblr media
HIM!!!!! and he was NAMED and had LINES!!!!
This is super exciting, because while we glimpsed Scorch in Season 1 while they were rescuing Gregor, I don't think he was mentioned anywhere by name, meaning it could have just been a random other RC with similar paint.
Delta Squad (from Legends) was technically canonized when they cameo'd in the Clone Wars, but it's so nice to see them again! It makes me pray that the other 3 members have escaped and are with Rex, because Scorch is *definitely* still super chipped....
Next, the MAIN thing I was super excited about:
So many things in this episode made me absolutely SCREAM, but the main one was probably FINALLY some movement on the connection between Nala Se and Omega. That's something I've been dying for more elaboration on since S1.
Omega is clearly a kid created for a specific reason, raised under specific circumstances, who has a unique bond with Nala Se, the primary creator of all clones. I was sure this would be part of the central storyline of TBB so I'm SO GLAD we're finally getting to it.
The thing is, Omega clearly has very complex feelings towards Nala Se, and Nala Se also considers Omega "special." SUPER curious to see where they go with this, especially since Nala Se seems to be reluctant to help the Empire. Understandable, given the destruction of Tipoca City, but she also never struck me as the sentimental type. I'm personally very wary of the "care" Nala Se seems to be showing Omega, and based on what we currently know, doubt that she means it sincerely—Omega (or her DNA) is likely valuable in some way.
Not sure how I'll react if they paint Nala Se as a sympathetic character, because I doubt I'll ever forgive her for what she did to Fives. Her treatment of Fives, which is also indicative of her treatment of all other clones. Her being kind(?) to Omega doesn't erase that.
I am absolutely confident that this lab and Nala Se/Omega is part of a plot that will connect to the experiments done to Grogu, which in turn will connect to Snoke + the return of Sidious in the ST. That's the running thread, to provide explanation/justification for that "twist."
While I think TBB is fun, THIS is what I personally was waiting for—Omega's true identity and why she's of value to Nala Se, how she therefore fits into the greater plan Nala Se had, and how that in turn affects not just Fett clones, but all the cloning that runs throughout SW.
I also LOVED that Omega showed her skills here—yes, she DOES know her way around Kaminoan tech!! The only time we've really seen it before is when Cad Bane kidnapped her + the S1 finale. She was Nala Se's personal MEDICAL ASSISTANT. She is older than the Batch! She KNOWS things!!
I was genuinely expecting (hoping) to learn more about Omega throughout the entire show, and we do see her being skilled + confident around various tools, but that's around it. I hope her past that she doesn't want to talk about is dragged out into the open in these last few eps.
I have a LOT of theories about Omega's past and her connection to the Batch and their origins (pst it's all in my fic), some of which will likely no longer be canon compliant, but ah well!
Other things that really made me happy:
-The Batch showing some growth due to the last episode, and growing a spine to stand up against Cid. Both pointing out that she didn't help them like they've helped her, and demanding a higher cut, though she did get the final say in the end. It was still a massive improvement!
-The ZILLO BEAST. First of all, it was definitely one of the coolest creatures in TCW, so it was super exciting to see it brought back! Its physiology is fascinating, and I loved how we got to see it visibly grow due to it feeding on electricity. This is actually the second creature we've encountered in TBB that seems to like electricity as an energy source, the first being in S1. It's neat to see this pattern, perhaps they're distantly related species?
I also LOVED that it tied into more experiments. I need to rewatch the eps, but i think it was implied in TCW that Palps was interested in the Zillo beast's armor, so I loved seeing that actually followed up on!
In general, I'm just a huge fan when world building plot points connect or are followed up on to build continuity and a greater view of the SW universe, and this episode definitely connected a bunch of points, so that was awesome!
Anyway, only 5 eps left of S2, excited to see where it goes!

So I'm just sitting here examining my collection of clones, and I have some thoughts.
Bly has a mix of a mustard yellow and brownish yellow paint on his armor. Also, unlike the other commanders, he has a single pauldron and a string of what looks like pouches, hanging from his other shoulder. His kama is pale yellow. (Also, on this figure, it's made of cloth, which makes him easier to pose)
Bly, Wolffe, and Fox all have parts on their armor where the paint has been chipped away. Cody, however, has like, gouges in his armor, but there's no discoloration. I just find it interesting.
All four of the Commanders have vastly different helmets, but Bly doesn't have any antenna on his armor/helmet at all.
Jesse, Fives and TBB Echo all have plastic Kamas which, personally, I find cheap. It makes them harder to pose.
Echo has a lot of antenna on his jetpack thing, like, a lot. The batch definitely gets good signal when he's around.
TBB Echo looks like he's ill. He's so, very, pale. Either that he's sick or a zombie.
Omega comes with a pet and a crossbow! 😀
Also, she's ridiculously posable. I have her legs crossed at the ankle because she's sitting on my desk.
Delta Squad's armor also looks like their paint has been scraped off in some places, to show their active maybe?
Boss' orange armor is more...mm...pumpkin color maybe? A deeper, redder orange. Cody's paint is more of a yellow orange, and I've called it gold in fics before but, looking at this, he's very clearing orange.
I might call Bly's paint gold in the right light, though.
Oh! And Omega's headband jewelry thing is kind of silly looking, was that ever explained? And why swoosh her hair back like that? To make her look less like Boba?
Follow-up: Hunter should arrive on Monday, and I'm curious how he holds up compared to the others I have, appearance and armor wise.
A 6-inch Crosshair is going to run me about $120, and I'm sad about it.
Tech and Wrecker might be the next purchases, though. Though I also want Jango, Boba, and Rex.
I'm very sad that I can't buy a Tup or Dogma action figure. It makes me sulky.

Wanna add my two cents here (bc obviously everyone wants to listen to me talk, lololol):
I really don't think Tech is dead. I really don't. I keep trying to think, "ya know, maybe he is really dead and we all got played," but it just doesn't sit right with me. Tech is too smart to have not figured out a way to survive the impossible. I can live with a quadriplegic/amputated Tech, and I know he could live with that too. What I don't think possible is for him to just... give up and die. That's not in his nature - that's not in any of their natures.
Now, I don't necessarily think that TBB had bad writing (and I know that my opinion is a subjective one, so hear me out), I just think the pacing was too fast for what needed to happen in the show. Both season 2 & 3 had this problem, but in different ways. Season 2 had character development after character development episode and then packed a whole bunch of plot into the last four episodes. Season 3 had good pacing with its plot, but I don't think there were enough episodes to adequately capture everything - character development, plot development - that it needed to.
I really want 22 episode seasons to come back for this reason. It gives writers and actors and everyone else enough time to develop and grow. Too many episodes? Make one a fluffier one where nothing bad happens and we get to see a glimpse of daily life! I would rather have too much content (not that you could ever have that with TBB) than not enough. There were soooo many plot points in this season that were introduced and then never got developed, like-
how did Crosshair find out about Tech's disappearance? who told him?
where did Emerie Karr come from?
why does Hemlock only wear one glove?
who were all the CX troopers under the mask?
how does the CX program work?
did Hunter and Crosshair ever talk after the wyrm?
why bring back Ventress?
how did Ventress survive?
what was the point of testing Omega's m-count (either by Ventress or Hemlock)?
how much progress had Project Necromancer made before it was blown up?
where's Cody?
where's Wolffe?
when does Wolffe escape the Empire?
when does Wolffe join up with Rex and Gregor?
where's Howzer?
where's Rex?
where did Rex and his cell go after Teth?
where did Lama Su go? is he still alive, or did I miss his death?
how did Scorch get sucked into being under Hemlock's control?
where's Delta squad?
who in the world thought to build a Little Kamino on the side of Tantiss?
Maybe I'm being too picky, but I'd like to think that if there are TWENTY-ONE QUESTIONS that are unanswered after the end of the show, then there might be some stuff that still needed to be developed or resolved.
Again, I think the writing of the show this season was fantastic, I really do. Crosshair's character development was peak, and I loved every bit of it (except losing his hand, but that's a personal peeve of mine, lol). Showing the team talking about Tech was great too.
BUT!!!
All that to say, I really don't think Tech's dead. With how much the show left unanswered, AND with the obvious baiting and pushing Tech's "death" by mentioning him every chance they got, I think that he's still alive. Maybe he's in stasis like Kix was. Maybe he somehow survived the spear in his gut if it was him under the CX-2 mask.
I don't know. All I know is that he acted waaay too familiarly with the Batch when he was hunting them down. He knew how to bypass Phee's security protocols on her ship. He knew how to fight them most spectacularly.
The only explanation is that it's Tech. I won't accept anything else.
I keep trying to tell myself that the writers didn't intentionally bait us. Then I remember things like 'domicile' and babes, I'm holding onto the benefit of the doubt by my fucking fingernails over here.

Just realized that the reason TBB rubs me wrong (besides the whitewashing). All of the things I want to see them explore in the show is related to how the clones are doing post-o66. These are the themes they were building up to.
They release the trailer with a single 'reg' in the main cast. Its Echo, a heavily, for lack of a better term, altered 'reg'. From a practical standpoint, we're going to see the mutated clones be heroes, while all the rest of them are imperial lackeys. Pardon me if I feel a little betrayed.
I find it rather frustrating that one of the main themes about the clones is that they are all different below the surface. The first episode of the Clone Wars, we see Yoda establish this verbally. This isn't some overstretched headcanon someone came up with, it is central to Clone Wars and the clones as a group. The point is that anyone has the capacity for greatness.
Domino Squad, the Wolfpack, Umbara. Its all about the value of the 'expendable' clones and their autonomy. Why is it that we suddenly get the opposite of that with the Bad Batch? Why are they the ones that get to escape? Because they're literally built differently?
Its a direct denial of all the themes the clones are built around. Its not like you couldn't have this same scenario with a group of regs. Cough cough Delta Squad
I like the Bad Batch. They're classic archetypes (maybe even too classic) but they are fun to watch. I'm just disappointed that this is what they've gone for to tell whatever story they will.

How do you think delta squad would act if their s/o was pregnant?
In honor of fucken Scorch showing up in TBB yesterday, I am taking a break from my break to write some more Delta content 😘
Boss: He is very surprised, but also gets this soft, almost slack-jawed look that shows just how happy the news makes him. His mind reels with so many thoughts. Having a family wasn't something he believed possible for himself; he only just came to terms with getting together with his S/O. And now he's having a child too? It's all very surreal. But he's all-in, no hesitation. He wants to be a good partner and a good father, and to him that means being stable, honest, and dutiful. If he can't be as present as he'd like due to missions, he'll ensure his S/O has a solid support system to help until he returns. Every decision he makes is with his family's safety and happiness in mind.
Fixer: There aren't many things that make this guy stop functioning... his S/O saying they're pregnant is definitely one of them. He just blinks as he tries to process the words, unable to formulate any of his own in response. His S/O will probably get worried, and whisper with teary eyes that they can't do this alone. That's when he'll snap to attention and get down to business. They will not be doing this alone, not on his watch. He will read up on child-rearing, put together a birthing plan, baby-proof the house, start a college fund, anything he can to be supportive and prepared. He'll also keep the news on the DL, only letting his brothers know, since it's against regulation and he doesn't want anyone to break up his family.
Scorch: This is the happiest day of his life. Never mind the fact he said that when he first kissed his S/O, and when they got married, and when he discovered a new pizza joint in town... He's just so over-the-top excited. He picks his S/O up and twirls around, laughing and crying. He gets his brothers on comms to tell them the news, though he's too worked up to form proper sentences so they don't quite understand what's going on. Eventually he'll calm down, but his joy never disappears. Scorch may have his doubts and insecurities at times, but this is one thing he doesn't question. He and his S/O are a team, and he can't wait for this child to join their squad.
Sev: Doesn't outwardly show his feelings for a while. He gives a few incredulous huffs and embraces his S/O while they express themselves. But it will take some time for the news to sink in. He's mostly just unsure of himself. His life is no life for a child, it's dark and chaotic and violent. Who is he to think he could be a good father amidst all that? It will take a few conversations with his S/O (where it's mostly just them talking) before he comes around to the idea. They help him see that despite his identity as a soldier, he is still more than capable of raising a child, being the strong and caring provider he is. He'll quietly but confidently start to be more involved from there.
