I finished replaying the skyrim main quest today and it only confirmed to myself yet again what I already knew - everything about the Blades in the main quest is pointless. (Before we begin, I wanna point out that all my points are about the narrative, it’s not gameplay related.)
Let me just walk you through all this real quick: What is the main conflict of the skyrim main quest? Alduin is back! What is the goal? Defeating Alduin! How do the Blades help you reach that goal? LET’S SEE ~ To give it more structure, the Blades’ goal is find out how and why the dragons are coming back, which is good, that’s obviously the biggest question and surely will be essential in fixing the whole conflict. There are 4 quests about the Blades you have to do and they are: A Blade in the Dark: Prove you are Dragonborn to Delphine by slaying the dragon Sahloknir. Okay, you start this quest because the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller has been taken by Delphine (somehow) and she wants to meet you. You than have to prove to her that you are indeed dragonborn. For some reason.  And you do that, you go to Kynegrove, kill a dragon, she sees you are dragonborn. Fine. This quest does nothing to help you in the main conflict, but that’s oka for now. Diplomatic Immunity: Infiltrate a party at the Thalmor Embassy.
Now, Delphine thinks that the dragons are back because of the Thalmor and wants you to find evidence about that.
The fun quest, going undercover into the Thalmor Embassy! Causing a scene, sneaking around, killing elves, and finding some evidence! That it’s
not
the Thalmor bringing the dragons back. But you find some dossiers about Delphine, Ulfric and Esbern!
You can’t do shit with the dossier on Ulfric, so the reward for this quest is A, its not Thalmor doing it (which no one besides Delphine suspected anyway) and B, ESBERN! ~ But nothing else on how to solve the conflict or an answer to why Alduin is back.
A Cornered Rat
: Locate Esbern
The story leads us to Esbern, so surely with his help we will get some information on the return of Alduin! This quest is just about finding Esbern and bringing him to Delphine however, nothing much to talk about.
Reward - Esbern
Alduin's Wall: Locate the prophecy within Sky Haven Temple.
Okay, everything up til now lead to this quest - You, Delphine and Esbern travel to Sky Haven Temple, in which there is a stone wall that talks about how Alduin was defeated the first time.
And the info boils down to - he was defeated by three people shouting at him.
And that’s it. Well, yeah, you find out that the events of the previous games where part of a prophecy about Alduin’s return, but that knowledge helps you less that the “was defeated by being shout at” part.
It doesn’t even tell you why and how Alduin came back!
NOW, the thing about the info from Alduin’s wall is that just that knowledge brings you nothing.
Just knowing that Alduin was defeated by a shout doesn’t help you do it a second time.
This is the part where you go from the Blades to the Greybeards again, and they will tell you that yes, they knew about Alduin’s wall, they knew about the shout.
And you are left wondering - well WHY didn’t they tell me???
I get that the story tries to make you choose between the Blades and the Greybeards, and they needed something to make the Greybeards look bad in comparison to the Blades.
It’s like: “They Greybeards only want peace, the Blades are the ones who want to actually defeat Alduin!”
EXCEPT, that’s not really the case? Sure the Greybeards want you to follow the way of the voice, but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t have helped you more eventually.
Also: they Greybeards know no more than the Blades do. You get the actual essential information from Paarthurnax. How to get the knowledge on Alduin’s defeat as well as why he is back. All and only because of Paarthurnax.
What I am trying to say is that you could just cut all those quests with Blades from the story and would have really little to change about the rest.
The story would still work if you could have gotten the Horn of Windcaller, brought i directly to the Arngeir, and then they teach your the clear skies shout so you can meet Paarthurnax and the rest of the questline stays the same.
There is never any indication that the Greybeards would never let you see Paarthurnax unless pressured to do so. (they say you can meet Paarthurnax once your voice is strong enough. Which indicates that with more learning and training you would eventually talk to him).
There is nothing in those 4 quests that you can aquire that you need at the end to solve the conflict. Paarthurnax himself has all the knowledge you need.
I mean yeah, going from “your brought the horn, now go see Paarthurnax” is bad pacing, but those missing 4 quests could have at least been filled with stuff that actually matters.
Now you may wonder about “season unending”, where it’s Esbern who holds this speech that makes everyone settle down and actually go through with the whole negotiation.
Two things:
First: There is no need for Esbern specifically to do this. I personally think another person could perfectly fit this role, like for example YOU, THE DRAGONBORN!
Second: This quest is not NECESSARY. You are able to skip it by beating the civil war questline first! So if this thing can be avoided entirely, so can Esbern’s one time in which he did something.
Also, if you manage to not to “season unending”, and never returning to the Blades in Sky Haven Temple, you never get the quest to kill Paarthurnax. Just saying.
The Blades are there for 4 quest and than you can just ditch them and never come back, which is earned, since they have nothing of value to offer to help you in your quest.
I know most people hate the blades for a number of reasons, but I think I personally would have respected them more if they actually had any use in the story. And I know that there was more planned, but it doesn’t matter what the writers actually wanted to do. What matters is what we got.
And what we got is are quests you just wish you could skip, since they are completely pointless.

THE OFFICIAL RELEASE
Alright guys, it’s finally happened! Today at 9am GMT, My Time at Portia left Early Access, which, of course, included a big content update (3.9GB) as well!
Since there’s always a lot of stuff in the Changelist, I decided to once again make an ordered overview of the changes and include a little FAQ for the future of Portia as well! :) Remember, I’m not affilated with Pathea or Team17 in any way, but I will, of course, only use the official information I can find all over the web.
The changes are under the cut, and, as always, have fun playing!
Tumblr media

Tumblr media

Yay! ☆ Since you now have to pay the Tree Farm & Mining Company, perks of Dawa and Dana will lower the cost of the Tree Farm and Mining Company respectively. ☆ Reaching a certain relationship with Merlin gives you the ability to rearrange stuff in the museum. ☆ The way Ack works for you has changed. Once you reach a certain relationship level with him, you’ll have to manually hire him - a paid service. Some actions require chips (cooking, planting). ☆ Meeting times for Ack and Mint have been adjusted. ☆ Added new relationship levels with Pinky, Scraps, and QQ. Furthermore, you can purchase an item to “un-adopt” them. ☆ NPC’s favorite items and gifts they want have been adjusted.

Tumblr media
Do I have to repurchase if I already played Early Alpha?
Definitely not! The game’s all yours :)
Will my save file from the Early Alpha Version still work?
Yes, your save files will definitely continue to work! Save files from the demo versions on the other hand are still not transferable to the main game.
What now? Will we ever get more content?
The devs themselves have said that there are still updates to come, especially some updates that will feature more content for the bachelors and bachelorettes (small side missions). More side quests will be added, more dialogues, and furthermore, the voiceover is not done.  And the best thing: There’s Sandrock DLC planned.
Where is the voiceover for [character]? Why is it missing? Is it a bug?
Don’t worry, it’s not a bug or problem on your end. The voiceover has just not been fully added for every character. There will be further updates that add the rest of the voice acting though!
Now that the game is out... where are my backer rewards?
For this one I’ll just quote one of the devs: “We'll be sending out DLC keys for you in the next few days.“ The digital content for backers will be released soon now, the actual, physical content will come after that. Be patient, things take time.
Will a translations be available for...
...German? Already in the game :D ...Japanese? It’s already in the game, a few translations are missing though. ...Korean? Yep, they’re working on it for console release. ...Russian? About 50% done. ...Turkish? They’re looking to get it into the game, already working on the translation process!
Will there be a (fully functional) Mac version or a Linux version?
A functioning, not-buggy Mac version is already in the making! For Linux there’s nothing planned right now.

10 Things I Loved About Mass Effect:Andromeda
Warning: Spoilers! And I wrote this on the spur, so there might be grammatical errors.
1.      I enjoyed the story. Yeah, people will say it recycles from the trilogy, but come on, people. Why are you surprised? Bioware recycles their plotlines all the time. It’s pretty much the same in all of their games. A protagonist gains special abilities and leads a Ragtag Bunch of Misfits team to defeat a big threat. And I’m not bothered by that. Sometimes familiarity in your franchise is good, just as long as you do new things to the formula, and I think they do.
What interested me the most was the theme of starting over. A lot of people in the Andromeda Initiative were former criminals or outcasts. The reason they joined was to start a new life, and it’s explored in the main questlines, the loyalty quests, and numerous side quests. I was worried about the game talking about colonization since humans are looking for a new home, but I was pleasantly surprised that the game made it clear that Andromeda is the angara’s home first, and humans and other Milky Way species will have to work with them. Thank god! No Mightey Whitey trope this time!
2.      Ryder as the player character. I honestly never thought I would love Ryder as much as I did when I played the game. Sure, no one will ever replace Commander Shepard, but Ryder isn’t meant to replace the Commander, rather show a different perspective in a new story. Commander Shepard is the hero we want to be while Ryder is more of a relatable character. Ryder has to learn through the entire game how to be a leader while going through the obstacles of their inexperience and youth so people will take them seriously. And it was compelling, uplifting, and at times amusing to see them become a hero in their own right and step out of their father’s shadow.
Also Sara and Scott felt like their own person. In the original trilogy, the player character is pretty much the same no matter what gender. But sometimes the dialogue can be different depending on if you play a male Ryder or a female Ryder. That’s because they are two different people who have had their own experiences and personalities. That really adds to the replay value!
3.      Female aliens everywhere! One of my major issues with the original trilogy was the lack of female Turians, krogans, and salarians. Sure we had asari an all-female race, and female quarians, but it felt weird that we met so many aliens with very few ladies. Not only do we get a female Turian squadmate, we also get plenty of lady alien NPCs gathered everywhere for random quests. We also have Kesh who works at the Nexus. And we get to see female salarians! And they kind of look the same as male salarians except with different voices. Thank god! It would’ve been horrifying to see salarians with boobs. Uh! And I’m pretty sure there were just as many female angara NPCs as there were males.
4.      The romances. Especially the queer ones. One of the things I love about Bioware games are the romance paths. Bonus points if there is a queer option. And as of patch 1.08, this game has the most number of queer romances in any Bioware game. I think my two favorite romance paths are with Sara and Vetra and Jaal and Scott. While representation for the LGBT community is improving in media, there’s no denying we still have a long way to go. And after again the crap year 2016 where we had a huge number of queer women characters die in tv shows, it was so wonderful to have a healthy and happy relationship between two women when I first played the game. And even if it wasn’t added until the patch, the romance between Jaal and Scott is absolutely sweet since we see two men show a lot of love and affection for each other which is rare to see in media.
5.      The Tempest Family. I adore every single character on the Tempest, and they really did feel like a family once you played further into the game. I am a sucker for found families, and to see these people who are trying to find a home ending up finding a home with each other just gives me so many feels!
Since there’s not really a huge crew in the ship like in the original trilogy when Shepard had an army of humans. In Andromeda, we have six squad mates, four additional crew members, and Ryder. And I think it made the family more intimate. It’s like our own little family lives on the Tempest.
Also I liked how there were more quests spread out throughout the game with the squad which I think was lacking in Inquisition. Plus. Movie Night is the best scene ever!
6.      In my opinion, the side quests were fun. I think this was one thing they improved from Inquisition. Inquisition side quests just felt like a bunch of fetch quests that got kind of boring pretty quick, and didn’t really add to the overall story. Some highlights from Andromeda were: Kadara, the angara reincarnation questline, the Turian jailed for murder, the anti-AI group, meeting Zaeed’s son, and those kids sending out a distress signal for a new light for their weed plant. HAHA!
They were compelling in their own right and included cut scenes instead of the Inquisitor going to some location like in Skyrim to do a thing come back to the quest giver saying, “I did the thing.” “Ok, good.”
7.      Unlike in Inquisition, there’s actual payoff for some of the quests you do. I don’t mean to be mean to Inquisition, I still love the game, but remember when we were promised that you had to build your forces up in order to defend against the main threat. Yeah, you built forces to get influence points to gain perks, and that’s it.
In Andromeda, while, yes. It’s not the same level as Mass Effect 2. When you actually complete quests and help out leaders, you can get different results during the final battle. Like, there’s a chance Captain Dunn may not survive.
Also, when you get 100% viability on all the planets, you get a special surprise on Habitat 7- being told that it will one day be habitable because of our efforts. Sure it was a side quest, but it just felt so rewarding!
8.      The climax was actually fulfilling and exciting. Again, something else Inquisition was lacking in. Seriously, when I first played Andromeda, I legit gasped when the archon was taking control of SAM node. The villain was actually living up to his threatening nature!
Just when we think we got everything under control, and are about to find Meridian, the Archon fucks shit up, and our sibling has to step up to save the day. Then we have to gather people we helped out and prepare for a final battle, and Ryder can finally prove themselves as a true Pathfinder and kick the Archon’s ass once and for all. People are saying the ending was as disappointing as ME3’s? Pfft…What are you even talking about?
9.      The angara. Bioware never fails to make me love an entire fictional species. Yeah, it feels a bit off that they pretty much have the same faces and the same 3 voice actors, but I really do love their culture. And I appreciate that they were clearly coded as POC while Andromeda didn’t go through with the whole Mighty Whitey Trope. The game wants you to respect their culture and to respect their home.
I love the angaran people are open about their feelings, I love how their religion believes in reincarnation, I love how we see angaran scientists, soldiers, merchants, mercenaries, and civilians. Also Aya and Hivraal are absolutely gorgeous!
And when Jaal finds out his people were created by the Kett, I was worried it was going to go the Dalish elves route, but Jaal points out that it doesn’t change anything about the angara. They are still their own people. And that was such an uplifting message.
10.  The overall light-hearted tone. I wrote a small post that got a good number of notes. (Probably the biggest number I’ve ever gotten), so to quote: “There was always this sense of hope and optimism about finding a new home. ‘Yeah, things may have gone totally wrong, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make them better’ was the overall message I got.
And really, with so many bad things happening in the world right now and too much of our entertainment supposedly being our escapism being dark for the sake of dark, this was something I think a lot of us needed.”
Mass Effect 3 had its light-hearted moments, and I love it, but man, that game was emotional draining.
It’s a bit discouraging to love something so much and get recommended videos on youtube pointing out the same flaws of that certain game, and why they thought it was a huge disappointment. Do I agree with some of their criticisms? Sure. Does the history behind the production explain the flaws? Oh absolutely.
But people seem to forget that the original Mass Effect trilogy wasn’t without its flaws. I mean, sure everyone can agree on the Mass Effect 3 ending, but I could make a list of all the issues I have with the other Bioware games including Dragon Age: Inquisition (which despite winning Game of the Year, kind of suffers the same problems Andromeda had).
So yeah, after the crap year of 2016, I was so excited to get a newly-released game that made me happy. And still makes me happy, and makes me in the mood to play another Ryder.

mass effectnever played | want to play | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
ok so as u know i beat mass effect 1 like. three days ago and all i have to say is AJDHGASDG!! DEFINITELY A FAVORITE!! WHERE HAS THIS GAME BEEN ALL MY LIFE!!! WHY DID I HESITATE FOR SO LONG BEFORE PLAYING IT!!! I WAS MISSING OUT ON SO MUCH I LOVE IT!! ALL THIS LORE AND THESE STRONG DIVERSE CHARACTERS!!! WTF THE FUCK!!!
rn i am in the process of playing me2 (im like 20 hrs in but i’ve done like nothing bc i am a completionist gamer and spend all my times stripping planets bare of their resources before leaving forever, and also just walking around everywhere looking at shit and messing around with my crew and avoiding the main questline) and oh my gosh!!!! also definitely a favorite im so in love with this game!!! its heartbreaking and genuinely funny and ridiculous and DID I MENTION THE COMBAT SYSTEM I LOVE IT. also any games that give u the option to dance are 10/10 in my book. also when garrus laughed once i died.
in summary mass effect is a great found family simulator. however there’s this really persistent bug where ppl keep talking to me about these reapers and their followers the goths geths, its kinda distracting me from the main purpose of the game, which is to gather up as many ragtag sad friends as u can. hopefully theyll remove all that other stuff in the next patch
dragon agenever played | want to play | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
dragon age origins is definitely one of my favorite games ever of all time, i BELIEVE it was my first bioware game and oh my GOD it was so good. the lore. the LORE. the CHARACTERS. the DRAMA the SCANDAL. it was so good i wanna cry. i was taken aback by how real all the companions were and how u could actually talk to them…. wild
dragon age 2 is no match for origins in my book but i still enjoyed it a lot, gotta give that one a good, the combat was definitely a lot simpler and a lot more fun and look. im a typical gamer i love a good fight, i love spamming buttons and having shit work out somehow. also a good cast!
i played like 150 hours of da:i with just one inquisitor and yet i have no memories of this game. i remember nothing, i know cole was there and i was real shook bc i read the dragon age books (i was super into dragon age like?? two years ago i think) and then varric was there and also i fought a lot of dragons. dorian carried us. my dream team was me, blackwall, varric, and dorian we had a lot of fun. alistair died. ummm i spent a lot of time standing in the tavern listen to the lady with the nice voice sing. gotta give this game a solid good, i don’t remember anything abt this game but i sure had a lot of fun playing it, whatever it was
fallout 4
never played | want to play | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
ok so i have like 300+ hrs into this game bc i keep starting over with new sole survivors and all of them are named washington. i still havent beaten this game. if u had asked me what my opinion of this game was like six months ago i wouldve been like this is a favorite for sure but now its like…. eh…. i play it for an hour every once in a while but it’s honestly started to bore me a little… like don’t get me wrong i very much enjoyed this game!!! (i wouldnt have 300+ hrs invested into it if i didn’t like it) but the game doesnt really have much replayability to me… sorry todd. thanks for preston and deacon and nick i love them a lot but other than that this game doesn’t really pull me in like it used to
portalnever played | want to play | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
OK LOOK. i do own this game and also portal 2. and i do want to play them. im just lazy. EVENTUALLY ONE DAY i will get around to playing this game, it looks like a ton of fun, even tho im not too big into puzzle solving. fair warning my list of games i want to play is like a mile long bc i just keep replaying the games i have LMAO
legend of zelda wind waker/paper mario the thousand year door/phoenix wright ace attorney/harvest moon DS
never played | want to play | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
ok i am lumping all of these together bc 1) i’ve never played them and 2) i don’t have much of an interest in playing them unfortunately, unless someone persuaded me to try them out i wouldnt really spend time on them, im too busy replaying games ive already played 1000 times
assassins’ creed 2
never played | want to play | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
OK I WILL ADMIT IT. i am a liar and a fraud. the only AC games i’ve ever played are black flag, rogue, and syndicate. no i don’t have a clue what’s going on in the real world with the animus or w/e and yes i had lot of fun with the parkour mechanics and killing ppl in impossible ways. AC1 and 2  and whatever games come after it are other games that are on my ever-growing list of games i want to play, i started AC1 like two years ago but then totally forgot about it BUT YES. I DO WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME. EVENTUALLY
skyrim
never played | want to play | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
