"No."
"Please?"
"You can't make me."
Natasha sighed as she leaned against your bedroom door, arms crossed over her chest. Your annoyed expression was illuminated by the blue light of your laptop, that of which you've been sitting in front of for the past 48 hours.
"You need to go out." She was concerned; you've been spending all of your time writing reports and studying with very little downtime. School is important to you, and she understands that, but she can see your stress. You're irritable, getting no sleep, and you've hardly been eating. Getting you to shower was a task she barely accomplished.
She's like your big sister - she looks out for you, even offered for you to live with her while you're in school. She feeds you and sometimes even helps you with your essays. But like any sibling - blood or not - she’s a pain in your ass.
"I'm not gonna be your third wheel again."
"You won’t be," she started, rolling her eyes at your stubbornness. "You need to relax, and Steve really likes spending time with you."
Ah, yes.
Steve Rogers, Captain America.
You've done this before. The problem with being friends with superheroes is that they're recognized everywhere. The trademark baseball cap and sunglasses don't hide them anymore. When you decide to have a night out on the town, people recognize them immediately, asking for photos and signatures and whatever else every fangirl might dream of.
This means that you get pushed aside and forgotten about. No one knows - nor cares - about you. You're not special, you don't have any superpowers or big muscles, and you're definitely not as pretty as Natasha. You're just the average girl, blending into the crowd as your celebrity best friends are swarmed by fans.
She’s right, though; you’re stressed and tired, and you haven’t had a decent meal in days. Endless assignments and deadlines have been keeping you cooped up. You could probably use some fresh air.
You glanced at her with a flat stare. She hadn’t moved, watching you with raised eyebrows as she popped her bubble gum. It made your eye twitch - nothing annoyed you more than her addiction to bubble gum. Sighing, you rolled your eyes and shut your laptop.
“Just let me shower.” ***
You’ve known Natasha for years. If you’ve learned anything in that time it’s that she’s a great liar and even better at keeping secrets. Secrets such as dragging you to a burger joint in downtown New York City to meet up with Steve and his criminally cute best friend.
You met him briefly a few months back. You had visited Nat at work when you passed him in the hallway, having just enough time to say ‘hello’ before you left for class. That night you had asked Natasha about him, and she knew.
The smirk on her face told you she knows. You’re pissed, but it’d be rude to turn on your heel and leave. They’re waiting just outside the restaurant, hands tucked snuggly into their pockets to keep out the chill of the early evening.
You don’t remember much from seeing him last. It was months ago, and it was just a quick, awkward smile in a too-small hallway. But now, as you’re purposefully taking your time up the sidewalk, you finally notice the details.
He’s tall, at least six feet. He easily towers over you, almost to the point where you have to bend your neck to make eye contact. His dark, chin-length hair frames his steel-blue eyes and high cheekbones, and those broad shoulders could probably lift a bus. The way his jeans hug his thighs is borderline sinful and there’s absolutely no way that jacket can hold that much arm. And let us not forget that jawline - it’s so sharp, you’re sure it can cut through steel. And those cheekbones? The scruff? For an ex-assassin, he’s gorgeous. Any girl in their right mind wouldn’t pass him up.
You saw him, and he caught sight of you, too. Steve glanced over his shoulder after his friend gave a nod in your direction, a grin forming as he fully turned to greet the two of you.
“You’re late,” he grinned, pulling you against his side for a friendly hug.
You glanced at him as you pulled away, tucking your hands back into your hoodie pocket. “Time is a social construct, Steve.”
“It sure is,” he nodded. He motioned towards his friend, stepping to the side, “Y/N, this is-”
“Bucky.” He held his hand out in greeting, offering a shy but polite smile.
Oh no, he’s awkward.
“Hi,” you grinned, accepting his hand. It’s huge; his fingers are long enough to reach all the way around the back of your hand and his palm is so big it could easily cover your entire face. And it’s beefy. The speed at which you pulled away was embarrassing, but you really didn’t want him to feel your sweaty palm. “Nat’s told me a lot about you.”
His chuckle was strained, his smile tight as he shoved his hand back into his pocket. He hung his head just enough for his hair to hang in his face. “I hope it was only the good stuff.”
Oh god, you’ve made him uncomfortable.
His gaze was on the sidewalk, teeth biting at the inside of his lip. You offered him a reassuring smile. “It was.”
***
Burgers are normally cheap, but this place was ridiculously expensive. $11.89 for processed meat on a bun? You’re a college student and they expect you to be able to afford that?
“So,” he started, poking a fry around on his plate. “What do you do?”
Bucky’s voice caught your attention and you blinked at him. He’s been relatively silent the whole meal, but now he’s sitting across the table from you, an amused grin on his face. “Huh?”
“What do you do?” He chuckled, biting the end off of the pickle spear that came with his order.
“Oh, um,” you started, wiping your mouth on your sleeve. “I’m going to school for astrophysics.”
He paused his munching.
You’re gorgeous - your eyes shine under the low light of the restaurant, and the way your hair is pulled up messily is just too cute. Your smile makes his heart skip. He could listen to your voice all day and never get tired of it. You treat him like he’s normal, that oversized hoodie swallows you, your eyeliner is smeared - and you’re smart.
Steve was right.
“What?” you asked, your cheeks growing embarrassingly warm at his sudden silence.
He cleared his throat, realizing that he’d been staring too long. His face was hot with being caught and he averted his gaze, the leftovers of his meal suddenly extremely interesting.
“Nothing, I just,” he began, chancing a glance at you - you’re still watching him. “I just don’t understand how a girl like you can be smart and pretty.”
Oh.
He’s flirting.
If Bucky saw the sly grin on Steve’s face, he ignored it. He was too busy watching the way your eyes widened and how you tried to hide your face behind your sleeve-covered hand. It was a bold move, one he hadn’t taken since 1940, but it was worth it. He’s not going to lie to your face - if he sees something he likes, he’s going to say it.
***
Time flew by and the air grew cold as the sun began to set. Street lights and busy traffic gave you just enough light to see when you stepped outside. Your breath came out in white clouds, a chill rolling down your spine as the warmth from the restaurant faded away.
Natasha was chatting with Steve a few feet away, glancing at you with every other word. You knew she was talking about you - you could see it in her eyes. Steve was doing the same to Bucky. They’re waiting to see the outcome of their little ‘blind date’.
You rolled your eyes and turned towards Bucky. He was a respectful distance away but within hand’s reach, his hands shoved into the pockets of his faded blue jeans. He was biting at his lip again, his eyes watching the traffic on the street.
“I had fun tonight.”
He swung his head toward you so fast you’re surprised he didn’t get whiplash. He offered a soft smile, his eyes searching your features. “I did, too,” he replied, his gaze moving to the sidewalk, the toe of his boot rubbing at the pavement. “I uh, I’d like to see you again, if that’s okay.”
He was nervous and shy, that bold confidence he had earlier now gone. And, damn, if it isn’t cute. You’ve heard the stories about him, but seeing him in person like this, being shy, quiet, and laid back - and a flirt - you had a hard time believing they were true.
“Yeah, I’d like that, too.”
He let out the breath he’d been holding and his shoulders sagged. He knows you know his reputation - everyone knows - but you’ve treated him like he’s human and he really doesn’t want to let that go. And there’s also the fact that he likes you. Like, really likes you.
“Good,” he nodded, giving a nervous laugh.
“You know where to find me.” You shot him a playful wink before you began to back away, your confidence replacing the lack of his. “Goodnight, Bucky.”
His lips pulled up at the corner, his heart swelling with a warmth he hadn’t felt in decades. “G’night.”
He watched your retreating form as you turned and followed Natasha down the street. When you turned the corner, he didn’t look away, his mind playing your smile and voice on a loop.
Steve shuffled up to Bucky’s side, a triumphant grin on his face.
“I told you.”
“Shut up.”

Inktober Day 4: Compliment (based on this prompt list) Pairing: StarkSpangledWinterHawk (shown: Stucky) Length: ~850 words Summary: Steve and Bucky is worried about Clint, so they ask Kate's help. @akira-of-the-twilight
Kate was grabbed by her upper arm and yanked into a cleaning supply closet without any warning.
"Eeek, what the--?!" she shrieked, but Bucky's metal palm on her mouth stopped her protests.
"Hi Kate", Steve grinned. "We need to talk."
Bucky removed his hand, and the younger Hawkeye stared at them with total disbelief. "Here?", she managed to say. Okay, a supply closet in the Avengers Tower was bigger than her whole room back at Clint's shitty apartment, but still it felt crowded with two beefy supersoldiers inside. "What are you doing here? You know I'm not against porn in general, but please, I'm not into ones starring my family!", she stressed, a little exasperated. If the two wanted some alone time from their other two boyfriends (AKA Rich Idiot and Miserable Idiot), that was totally their business. Kate preferred blissed ignorace.
"Nothing like that", Cap (AKA Idiot With A Cool Shield) reassured her quickly. "It's about your dad."
Kate scrunched her nose. "Birdbrain is not my dad."
"Okay, your guardian-mentor-landlord-whatever", Bucky (for now codenamed Traitor Idiot in Kate's labelling system) corrected, but he had no patience for finer details. "You ever noticed how bad is Clint with compliments?"
Kate stared at them again. For one, what the hell. For two, did they really dragged her into a closet to talk about this? And for three, it was nonsense. "What on earth are you talking about? Clint is always complimenting people. I'm pretty sure that was the only reason he wasn't fired from SHIELD back in the days. The interns loved him too much and would have rebelled against his leave."
Bucky snickered, but nodded in agreement.
"No, you misunderstood", Cap said softly. "We know this. But did you notice that Clint never takes well the compliments when he gets them?"
Kate wanted to answer immediately, but Bucky talked sooner."Yesterday he saved the whole mission by spotting the undercover agents, but when Steve acknowleged it, he said it was just the advance of his position, nothing to do with him."
"Or that time when he helped Tony out and then he ran out of the room when we tried to..."
"And with Natasha, if you remember that time..."
They both interrupted each other mid-sentence while asseverating their truth, and Kate frowned more and more, because... actually, they were right.
"And when we compared his ass to Tony's..."
"Okay, that will be enough", she said quickly. She had to draw the line somewhere. Having three badass Uncle was great, but she really didn't need the mental images of their actual love life if she wanted to keep her sanity. God knows it was a tough project sometimes around them. (It was top secret that she sometimes actually found their open affection cute.)
"He always belittles himself and his efforts and deflects it if someone tries to praise him", Bucky pulled out their shared conclusion.
"I got the point", Kate repeated himself. "What do you want me to do with it?"
The two supersoldier exchanged a look. "We want you to join us in our mission."
A huge smile appeared on Kate's face. Fucking finally! She hated that she wasn't allowed on any Avengers mission, saying she's 'too young'. She was sixteen and already an even better sharpshooter than Clint, for fuck's sake!
"Absolutely", she agreed immediately.
"We have to bath Clint in praise and compliments until he learns to receive and believe them", Steve announced ceremonially.
Kate's stomach dropped. "WHAAAT?", she shrieked again, and barely registered Bucky's laugh through her utter horror.
"Don't try to fool us, we know you love him, and just act the opposite."
Kate crossed her arms in front of her. "I'm a teenager, it's kinda in my job description to hate him."
"Maybe, but you don't." Steve's smile was so soft and gentle that it almost melted Kate's heart. Almost. And then Bucky had to give him a deep and passionate kiss. With tongue and all. Kate closed her eyes and gave them fifteen seconds.
"Ugh, guys, I'm still here", she reminded them after the time was up. Their mouth separated with a smacky sound. "Disgusting", Kate murmured quietly to herself.
"No, it's really not", Steve chuckled. (Kate contemplated for a moment to rename him Little Shit in her mental database.) "So, will you help us, please?"
"What about Tony?" Kate had to ask.
"He's himself, he will do fine without us asking him specifically..."
"You mean he can't keep a secret for his life and would go straight to Clint with the problem?"
"You said it, not us", Bucky grinned again.
Kate sighed. "Fuck you, Captain America." Bucky's palm flew to Steve's face before he could say the word language. Kate appreciated the gesture, and sighed again. "Okay, okay, mission accepted. Objective: praise Clint more often. Got it."
Bucky kissed her cheek. "Thank you, Katie."
"Yeah, thanks", Steve agreed with a bright smile.
Kate pointed to them before she left the closet. "You owe me so much!"
"We know", Bucky grinned back, and Steve closed the door. Kate didn't ask what will they do inside together, she fled as quick as possible.

I Can’t Lose You Again (One-shot) (Bucky x Reader)
Prompts: “From your prompt list…6, 7, 10, and 12 with Bucky pls? Angst topped with a little fluff?” ~ Requested by Anonymous
6. “I tried to tell her that, but she just wouldn’t listen to me.”
7. “Why did you have to be so reckless? You could have been killed.”
10. “I can’t lose you, you’re all I have.”
12. “I’m dangerous. You can’t be with me.”
Summary: Bucky and the Reader have been dating for several months, and Bucky seems to always put her life at risk. Will this one mission end their relationship or will it only make it stronger?
Warnings: Angst, language, but fluffy ending.
“Damn it!” Steve yelled in your earpiece.
You chuckled to yourself, “Language, Cap.”
Steve huffed in your earpiece. “Y/N, I need you and Barnes to get to the South side of the building. We need to get these civilians to safety.”
You nodded, “Roger that.” You giggled. “Gotta love me some Captain America puns.”
Steve groaned in his earpiece. “C’mon y/n….really?”
You giggle again. “Uh, Steve, I have no idea where Bucky went. He was right behind me the last time I saw him.”
“What?! Barnes, do you copy?” Steve asked frantically.
You walked slowly around a pillar looking for Bucky. “Buck? Where are you?” You looked around another pillar wondering where the heck your super soldier boyfriend could have gone. “Steve, I have no sight!”
You started to jog towards the west side of the building before you heard Bucky scream in your earpiece. “Little preoccupied at the moment guys!” You smiled at the sound of his voice. “Babe, where are you?” You heard him grunt and punch something. “East side. I’m surrounded by these friggin agents. Oh shit!”
You lost your connection. “Buck?! Steve I gotta help him.” You jogged to the East side of the building and found Bucky trying to fight off 6 Hydra agents. He looked tired and worn out, so you decided to step in and help. You weren’t that great at hand-to-hand fighting and had lost your gun while trying to save a kid from a burning building. You looked towards Bucky, who tried to smile at you. “Had to take all the fun away, huh, Barnes?” you joked.
He snapped an agent’s neck before turning to you. “Now would I do that, Doll?” He winked at you before grabbing another agent. He turned to see more agents coming. “Y/N, you shouldn’t be here. There are too many agents and I don’t want you getting hurt.” You rolled your eyes at his attempt to push you away. “Bucky, I told you before. I’m NOT leaving you. I love you too much to let you fight this on your own.”
Meanwhile you were trying to fight off a beefy agent that was taller than Steve. He threw a punch to your rib causing you yelp in pain. Your breathing hitched for a second before you regained strength. You went to swing at the guy, but he was too quick for you. Grabbing his knife, he slashed at you. You jumped back, missing the knife by an inch. Luck. You grabbed a nearby pole and swung at him. He dodged it pretty quickly. What the heck do you do now?
The only thing you could think of was to kick him. You raised your right leg and kicked him hard in the gut. He groaned in pain, but quickly regained all strength. He raised his huge fist and punched your head, causing you to fall on your back. This time you couldn’t dodge the knife that he sliced into your stomach. He dug in deep to make sure you didn’t move. You groaned and your vision started to go blurry. You clutched your side as an attempt to stop the blood. “Buckkkyyy....????” You called out weakly.
Bucky rushed over to you, grabbed the guy by the neck and slammed him hard down on the ground. “Y/N? Talk to me, Doll.” He lifted your weak body onto his lap. “Steve? Y/N is down. Call the quinjet!”
“Is she going to be ok? Do I need to call Bruce too?”
“I don’t know. I’m trying to regain her consciousness. She got stabbed and is losing a lot of blood. From the looks of it, she got a nasty blow to her rib.” He lifted your face gently. “Y/N? C’mon babe, don’t quit on me now.” He pressed his hand over yours, that was clutching your side. “Y/N...babe. Look at me.” He started to sob as the world around you turned black.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You woke up in the hospital room back at the Stark Tower, from hearing voices around you. “How is she, Bruce?” From what you could hear, you could tell it was Steve’s voice. “Well, from the X-ray scans, she got a cracked rib. I stitched her side up where she was stabbed. She is lucky to be alive considering the amount of blood she lost. What exactly happened?”
Steve sighed and sat down in a chair. You heard Bucky clear his throat. “She  found me on the East side of a building, fighting off a punch of agents. She flat out hates it when I’m in those situations cause she gets so worried about losing me. So, she helped me out by trying to fight off the agents...with no weapons might I add.”
Bruce sighed. “Bucky, you know she isn’t trained that well in hand-to-hand combat. She could have been killed right then and there.”
Bucky chuckled softly. “I tried to tell her that, but she just wouldn’t listen to me.” You physically moved at this point, causing the guys to rush over to your bedside. Bucky was the first to talk. “Hey Doll, how are you feeling?” You smiled at his handsome face. “I feel like I was punched once or twice.” This got a chuckle from Steve and Bruce.
Steve patted Bucky on the shoulder. “We’ll give you two some privacy.” After Bruce and Steve walked out, Bucky turned to you and grabbed your hand. “Y/N, you scared me so much. Why did you have to be so reckless? You could have been killed.” You squeezed his hand reassuringly. “Buck, seeing you in danger scares the shit out of me. You mean the world to me and being your girlfriend only makes those feelings stronger. I can’t lose you.”
He smiled and rubbed his thumb across your cheekbone. “I know, babe, it’s just...I can’t lose you. You’re all that I have.” He bent down and kissed your lips softly. You twirled your fingers in his chestnut locks, pulling him closer to you. He put a hand on the side of your face so he could deepen the kiss. Moments like these you cherished with Bucky, because you never knew when it would be the last time you’d see him.
Breathless, he pulled apart from you and rested his forehead on yours. “I love you, y/n. I love you too much.“ He pulled away from your grasp and buried his face in his hands. There was something wrong. You sat up in the hospital bed and swung your legs over Bucky’s lap, and pulled his upper body to your chest. “Babe, what’s going on?” He cried softly. “I’m dangerous, y/n. You shouldn’t be with me. I have put you in danger way too many times.”
He tried to pull away again but you wouldn’t let him. “James Buchanan Barnes. There has never been a single moment where I regret being with you. I love you no matter what. I love you when we are sitting on the couch watching Netflix or when we are fighting off some psycho-ass Hydra agents. You are my everything, James.” You pressed a soft kiss to his temple and rested your head on his shoulder.
He looked down at you and smiled softly. “You mean that?” You chuckled and gently cupped his face. “I mean every word. You’re mine for forever.” You leaned in to kiss him, but he grabbed your waist and threw you back down on the bed. You giggled as he hovered over you. Kissing you deeply, he began to unbutton his shirt. “I love you, y/n. And I’m going to show you just how much I love you.” He buried his face in the crook of your neck, trailing soft kisses along your neck. “I love you too, Sergeant.”
You and Bucky were the couple to be, and no matter what danger you faced...you were with each other til the end of the line. :)
