every two weeks i watch an hour of downton abbey (DO NOT SPOIL MEEE IM ONLY ON SEASON 2) so anyways i am THINKING ABOUT lord and lady harrington and their only son, robin a house maid, and eddie who only just recently managed to get a job as a chauffeur. he absolutely hates driving around the young lord and his fiancee, nancy, UNTIL he learns that it was a match of convenience and lady nancy actually spends so much time at the house to see robin ohoho (the plan is that steve and nancy get married and robin becomes her lady's maid or whatever) but then ofc eddie happens SMH
(hopper the most two faced butler of all time, joyce as housekeeper)
ANYWAYS steve and eddie falling in love in the middle of finding ways to sneak robin to nancy without getting caught BUT THEN THE WAR HAPPENS and eddie's scared of being called up (or something??? historical inaccuracies who?? im not looking this up rn) and steve like very quietly strong arms a doctor to be like 'nope not this one' BUT THEN STEVE DOES GO TO WAR and eddie's a whole mess about it bcs maybe he should have gone with him??? but cue steve getting seriously hurt (yes i just got to cousin matthew getting blown up)
lord harrington is furious bcs his son is now cripple and unable to have a kid and nancy's dad is threatening to call the marriage off but nancy's fighting everyone while also sneaking eddie in with her to see steve CONSTANTLY and they're all a mess anyways idk about downton abbey but steddie would have a happy ending i demand

Steve's laughter is worth more than gold, than all the money Eddie has made working for Lord Harrington. "Ed, god," he murmurs around his smile, until it wobbles and falls. "No, I mean... I don't— You don't have to—"
"I'll drive you around," Eddie interrupts, before Steve can say something silly, silly like Eddie being free to pursue anyone other than Steve. "Wheelchair won't be anywhere near as hard as a car, you know." He presses another kiss to Steve's hand, his wrist, his fingers as Steve cries. "I was hired to take you everywhere, it's my job, you know?"
"I know," Steve sobs, clutching to Eddie. "I know."

Terzomega thoughts incoming. this might be long so im gonna put it under a cut. And this might be me projecting my "prince and his knight" obsession but i dont care i do what i WANT !!!!!!!!
I feel like Omega was pining for Terzo from the very start. I think Cardinals would have their own assigned ghoul (yeah, that makes more sense than my previous idea), and Omega was Terzo's. It was Terzo's choice, actually. The ghouls would act as assistants and guards, for the most part. So there wasn't much time when they weren't together (much to Terzo's initial disappointment). He picked Omega because he was quiet (and a real piece of eye candy, but he won't admit to that) and figured he would bother Terzo the least.
And they did get along well! Surprisingly well, actually. Terzo's brothers really expected him to go through all the ghouls in the Abbey and never be satisfied with any of them. What's even more surprising though, is that Omega was perfectly happy to work with Terzo as well. Often Omega would find himself being 'lectured' by Terzo, but it was really more like infodumping if you ask me. He had no idea how badly he wanted someone to listen to him talk about his interests. But... If you asked Terzo, though, he would still say that Omega was annoying, he wished he could be alone more often, etc. etc. Omega refused to discuss how he felt about working with Terzo in depth. Just that he enjoyed the work and Terzo wasn't bad company.
Things got a little awkward when Omega was asked to be apart of the Ghost project, but he was the best choice they had. Terzo claimed that he "wouldn't mind a little more alone time" with Omega busy. Unfortunately he had a ghoul assigned to him whenever Omega was away, and Terzo very quickly realized that he missed Omega. Like a lot. I don't know who they replaced him with, but whoever it was Terzo just did NOT like. So whenever Omega came back from his first tour, it was a pretty big surprise to see Terzo happy to see him. Suddenly Terzo is inviting Omega to join him, instead of trying to convince him to leave. He's asking Omega questions about himself. Terzo may not be falling in love yet, but Omega has definitely got it BAD now if he hadn't already.
Omega desperately wants to do anything he can to make Terzo smile, to help him succeed. Whether he knows it or not, Terzo has Omega wrapped around his finger. Terzo wants to be left alone? No one will be allowed within a 20ft radius of whatever room Terzo is in. Someone made Terzo upset? At best, they get the scare of their life. At worst, they get the last scare of their life. He is a demon from hell, after all. Something very primal about his love (or obsession?)
I don't know what finally has them admit their feelings, but when it happens? No one sees them for at least a week.

Edit btw. Terzo flirts with Omega often, even before he realized that he had feelings for Omega. It started as friendly teasing and banter at first, but it ALWAYS drove Omega insane. He's just so very good at hiding it.

i hate tv shows nowadays because im actually so pissed maxton hall is only 6 episodes long. if it was longer we probably could've gotten so many interesting scenes between characters. (btw i have not read the books so this is based off the show).
i keep thinking about the many unexplored dynamics and potential other characters have. i get this is very ruby and james centric but i wouldn't mind additional scenes of others.
i wanna know more about lin and see her as more than the token poc best friend. i wanna actually see ruby's mom's bakery. i got the vibe that cyril is kinda jealous/envious of james like what is going on there??? i forgot for most of the show that alistair and elaine are siblings because they had exactly one interaction in the first episode iirc. kieran is so clearly into ruby and jealous of james' relationship with her, i wanna see more of that and him! he's cute! i want more drama please! we barely got crumbs of ruby and lydia, i desperately need the whole cake! idc how it went in the books i wanna see mr sutton getting the shit beat out of him. alistair and ruby have so much bestie potential!! he was more distressed when james iced ruby out than when kesh did the same to him! they talked ONCE in the first episode and then never again?? alistair was the first person to realize the effect ruby had on james and pointed it out to him. i need need NEED a classic alistair and ruby mess around!!!!
now that i think about it, a filler episode focusing on the side characters would be so good. a little time dedicated to a day in the life of ruby's dad showing that while his disability effects him, he's still capable and happy in life. ember going to her public school and pursuing fashion, wildly contrasting what we see going on with ruby. a bit solely about the committee/other students at maxton hall gossiping about ruby and james because it's so obvious when they can't go 5 minutes without looking at each other or bickering in class. another day in the life focused on percy getting dragged through rich people shit but still being very loyal to james and being proud of who he's becoming OR a segment with zero beaufort in sight and it's just percy chilling off the clock. i bet he has a cat named moon-moon and watches downton abbey

I know you gave some thoughts about the bosses in the tags but your thoughts on tarantula in specific got me thinking because them being interesting yet weak as a boss fight is like. So real ?? Literally huh?? And it's a SHAME because the Bloomingdale story is one of my favorites from the main game! So I just wanted to ask like, what standout bosses felt narratively gripping but weak as a boss fight? Did any feel kinda eh for you storywise but actually got your blood pumping a little?? I am just so curious lmao. Everytime I see you gush about DQIX it feels like I am a starry (hehe) eyed kid who got transported back to 2009 waakwkwajjansnssns

this is so shameful i did not see this i am so sorry scuffle my friend sniffle....i will ramble so much just for you. (i hope you can feel me beaming astral gratitude at you, you are very kind to me) OKAY SO. spoilers for most of dqix ahead tread carefully questers!!! the post our dear friend scuffle is speaking of is this one here where im tiering boss's based on very arbitrary and specific criteria, and im gonna go into more depth rn: disjointed rambles lie ahead beware!!!
i spoke a bit about tyrantula already but - while i dont know if i just happen to be overlevelled everytime i get to bloomingdale or if its just scaled weirdly - shes always absurdly easy for me to beat. ive never felt like im chipping away at her, its always more. okay well theres like 3 turns left moving on. and then shes gone! and thats such a shame given my already long standing feelings on tyrantula. there is something to be said in regards to her being weak potentially fitting nicely into the story if we see it as a sort of "marion(ette) wouldve been easy to save, but no one ever did" kind of concept, but thats almost definitely not what was intended so it feels a little. unearned, i suppose. especially given that the reward is the massive boat and no true happy ending for marion(ette)
story wise i'll admit i was actually kinda :/ about leviathan and porth llaffan - i was really attached to jona because i thought her accent and design was really cute, but the actual build up itself was not particularly interesting to me for whatever reason (felt a little generic? not sure, i found a good chunk of newid isle to be a bit "going through the motions-y", even if i really enjoyed the tower of trades itself*) (my issue lay more with the cave than the story). the boss fight however? i struggled with that SO MUCH as a kid. something about the waves he summoned DESTROYED my team repeatedly and i remember getting so incredibly invested in trying to JUST barely pull through. repeated heart racing and wishing that there was a health bar so i could at least tell if i was even remotely NEAR close to beating it. finally seeing that flash of white with the last hit really got me, and the following scene with jona and her father kinda pulled the whole thing together for me! i really liked going back to porth llafan to talk to jona every once in a while, even if her dialogue didnt change. my friend :) * want to clarify. i definitely didn't Dislike anything, i think i was just so enamoured and curious about the whole whale summoning thing the ghost was talking about, and then having the focus be turned on "youre going through a cave now" without much extrapolation on this village's non celestrian based worship made me a little disappointed, so by contrast 9 year old me was WAY more excited by going on to bigger places. perhaps also part of my conflict was that i actually beat the porth llafan section BEFORE alltrades. im not even sure if i went to alltrades abbey at all before beating the whale. probably didnt help some of it feeling a little jumbled!
that being said, i think the boss ive come around on most is either goreham hogg and/or the master of nu'un! i ranked goreham hogg pretty low but feel the need to clarify that part of that is just that hes REALLY fun to hate. hes this awful, opulent beast of a boss who destroyed me age 9 and ran/runs that sincerely horrific slave camp/prison so its easy to dislike him! thats good! hes a villain! im MEANT to not like him, and given how much i ADORE goresby purrvis (for being so cool) and hootingham gore (for his sick design) its probably important that i want to sincerely kill at least one of them. there is very little i truly dislike about dq9, since i tend to have Fun getting mad about things in a cathartic sort of way.
re: master of nu'un - he was a boss i never found particularly standout, and found weirdly anti climactic when put in contrast of this weird and mysterious tower (that has no clear purpose btw i need to talk about that in depth sometime what the fuck is the tower of trades actually there for from a worldbuilding perspective im so intrigued) and then this strange glowing room (which is literally referred to as the ??? room in the wiki btw. isnt that sick) where this priest weve been looking for is just. transformed. and that transition is really cool honestly!! i imagine it wouldve been more monumental to me if id done things in order, since i wouldnt have seen the fyggs in action yet, and in theory it also makes a really interesting narrative precursor to corvus (see my previous notes on jack abott and his parralels to the player) but i feel like his abilities and attacks were just a bit...eh? no super standout animations, which is a shame given that he does a quirky little "hehe what should my new evil name be....high jack....jackrilege maybe ....." before the fight and implies some sick mischief in him that doesnt really get communicated further. i think some of my feelings on this got sorta cemented when (over a decade later) i finally fought yore, and his design and fight felt a good bit more fitting to him. sure, it makes sense for a priest to get a fucked up evil demon form, but it just doesnt quite hit the nail on the head! its not terrible, just not the coolest thing in the series!

BUT... original lyra before she got deleted was a half-noble elf who grew up as a weird little silent girl... she killed her parents when she was young (she doesn't remember why and i haven't decided exactly what happened, it doesn't matter except she did it with her hands and got scarred) and set off on her own just kind of drifting from place to place using her charisma to find places to stay for a while but generally was detached from everyone and everything.... smashcut to bg3 and she's generally Good mostly because she doesn't care either way and helping people is easier, but she becomes worryingly attached to astarion after he drinks her blood the first time... kind of a "i've never felt anything and now i feel it all and it's going to be directed entirely at you" thing so they make the rest of camp EXCEEDINGLY nauseated by their general situation.
like think twin rogues who have a very high kill count from the shadows where the rest of the party can't even see them and they have a silent language they use in battle that starts spilling over into real life and astarion is like absentmindedly feeding on her for comfort purposes during like group night hangouts and she calls him baby and everyone is like stop being GROSS and OFFPUTTING. lyra thinks she's like a worldly wise enlightened figure who can help astarion (and the party) to Be Their Best Selves but really she's just giving advice without being vulnerable in return... but she DOES do a lot of complex things wrt astarion and his Healing and i love her for that. that's private for them <3 lazael and shadowheart are her besties and she basically tells them to get over themselves and just fuck already (they do). wyll can't stand her because she is down with mizora and karlach is like PLEASE PLEASE have some FUN with me and lyra is like. eh. im glad you're having fun but it's too much effort.
so basically she's not fully In The World until she meets the party and then she's in it but in an unhealthy way that is almost singularly focused on astarion, but luckily she does like. in her heart. want good things to happen to them and is a Healer so she stops the ascension etc. having her deleted in the middle of act three is so poetic because she nearly got him his happy ending and was maybe ready to open up and give him parts of her in return but now we'll never know!!!! she's always be the silent woman!!!!!!!

Favorite headcanon for every ghoul! Go!
These are all so very random and I was verbose as always but here ya go :)
Rain: got that water ghoul Siren pull and sometimes gets in his head about if it affects how much the rest of the pack loves him. Less sad one: teaches swim lessons sometimes for siblings that never learned how :)
Dew: he truly is happy to have switched elements. I always see him as a hybrid and that essentially he flipped what his dominant element was. He just feels that the Fire better suits him
Swiss: his vision is just bad enough that he wear glasses. He has a thin wireframe pair that he wears around the abbey when not wearing his mask, but also they put special lenses into his Era V helmet that are his prescription :)
Mountain: I have talked before about my love of soft folk music enjoyer Mountain before. Him and Rain have a Chill Vibes playlist that they made together. The other ghouls pretend to not like it but they do have to admit it’s relaxing.
Bonus thought: both him and dew see each other as somebody to let their guard down with and be something that aren’t with the rest of the pack.
Cumulus: normally such a sweetie that when she finally gets truly mad it becomes the scariest thing ever.
Cirrus: listen when she parties she has big frat bro energy, im sorry but I MUST say it. ♡
Girl is out there cracking cans open one handed and then demolishing them and she looks hot doing it :)
Aether: nap king. Man is sleepy and can/will fall asleep anywhere. He also will accidentally lull anybody else sitting with him to sleep as well. He often wakes up and there’s another ghoul asleep curled against him that was not there before
Sunny: despite how chaotic she can seem, she also is amazing at small quiet gestures to make others feel loved
Aurora: ghoul most likely to commit to the bit. So often another ghoul sets up a joke and then she just smashes it out of the park
Phantom: great at guitar but bad at quintessence magic. Conversely (bc I see them as a quin/earth combo) bad at percussion but good at earth magic
Ifrit: known around the abbey for being the most helpful ghoul they ever summoned. He’s just a kind friendly lad and all the older ladies love to tell him such
Zephyr: sharpest tongue and quickest wit in town. Also side note I love that people often use him for chronic pain representation.
Mist: people find her all intimidating at first and then earn their way onto her ride or die list and are like Oh Okay
Alpha: is the reason the ghouls aren’t allowed at the yearly bonfire night o.0. The ghouls have their own anyways but are no longer allowed at the main one ever since The Incident
Omega: the best storyteller of the group. He could be telling you anything and it will be captivating every time

first of all in the daudmartin brainrot corner we've got
sequel to bctbk, as promised. i have a major "plot" point planned, and then it might go one of two directions... we shall see :3c
the high overseer martin/assassin daud fic that i've posted a few excerpts from. essentially daud manifests himself into the abbey suggestively asking for ~spiritual guidance~ (lol) and things escalate from there. this has to get finished at some point because its like one of the first things i started writing for them. it deserve to see the light of day
a mildly humorous high overseer martin/spymaster daud fic. kind of a challenge for myself also- i find spymaster daud hard to imagine, and am not that used to writing daudmartin where they're not constantly trying to one-up/double cross each other/at each other's throats flirtatiously. presumably will not be nsfw (or at least, i'm not planning on it, but i make no promises. can't know where the ol inspiration will take me).
oh heres another high overseer martin thing! who wouldve thought! this time with Responsibility and Abbey Politics and Decisions. and working through issues. so many fucking issues. this one is actually actively in the works so ill leave it at that for now ;>
daudmartin pwp with genuinely 0 plot. like, negative plot. this thing defies plot. i can barely even tell you if it's an au or what, i might sprinkle a few nonsexual sentences in if i'm feeling generous but that's it. other than that it's literally just about martin being very quiet during sex and daud trying every trick he has in his book (which admittedly isn't many) to change that instead of like, communicating
augh speaking of plot-defying pwps. "what if overseers had (some appropriate equivalent to) confessions". there is some lore in here obviously but the entire point of it is confessional dirty talk. i dont KNOW

mostly unplanned ideas that i might flesh out: sokolov portrait thing. some dunwall noir stuff purely for martin in a cassock reasons (and sexualising religious guilt reasons. if i knew anything at all about priests i'd be working on this much faster). something involving the outsider appearing to martin (this might just get absorbed in a more well fleshed out idea at some point). martin Suffering More, because i want him in a situation where his wit fails completely (more desperation! more excuses! i am weak for this i really am.). something involving some more Action- fighting together against an acute threat? i think there should be more fighty martin out there. i am the change i want to see in the world
(not including the various snippets for the eternal serkonan vacation au which i already laid out there)
in the thief crossover brainrot corner (i bet you forgot i allude to thief crossovers in my description!)
also a sokolov portrait thing, but i have it way more planned out. corvo really, really wants garrett to sit in for a portrait (especially now when he's officially the empire's shadiest most mysterious spymaster ever). he reluctantly agrees, but Under One Condition.
a sort of relationship chronicle via heart lines. definitely starts with corvo's diplomatic mission and possibly ends with some happy dh2 era content. obviously i have the heart lines planned out.
possibly something involving more political intrigue/royal drama type stuff? i'm lucky enough to have access to someone who can give me some really good examples/plots if i fail to come up with anything myself.
(this is just a thief thing but i have had a viktoria/lt. mosley thing running around my brain for AGES. i want to explore how their relationship develops so bad. i know they have literally one interaction in canon but they are my blorbinas and i have mentally expanded their backstories so hard the story is basically begging to be written at this point)

Northanger abbey!! I adore Cathrine, she's so fun and her intuition is on point, it's just that her imagination is a bit wild but then again she's young so she'd get better at placing her feelings eventually... My favorite thing about henry is his house lol from what I remember nice house surrounded by trees and dogs, away from everyone what's not to love, also he knows about fabrics and colors and novels so... He's funny so I can for give the obnoxiousness and he's responsible which is a trait austen loves in her leading men. I love how austen allows her heroines to be loud and wrong and still give them a happy ending, they have their flaws but they don't have to pay for them, they learn and correct and apologize. Sorry for ranting lol
the timing of this message couldn't be more perfect, i picked up my book and read for about an hour, got on here and i've been scrolling just thinking "gotta get back to it, gotta get back to ittt" 😂 so I'll be doing that once I answer (they're on their way to the abbey with catherine for the first time rn, exciting for both her and me lol)
I am so impressed with how smart she actually is because I was under the impression she might be too gullible. she, however, though a bit too good-natured and thinking the best of people at all times, knows what she likes and what she doesn't. she doesn't get swayed by the compliments of a guy she's decided sucks big time (unlike belle who turns her head in the direction of anyone willing to show her even a bit of attention)(im a bit more of an isabella than a catherine in that regard but we're working on it shh); catherine can be stubborn, she has a backbone, a strong moral compass (reminds me of fanny a bit) and she learns from her mistakes. follows her morals while still worrying about bringing pain upon her loved ones that she has to oppose - the thorpes and james trying to stop her from running and explaining herself to miss tinley after john lied without her permission?? oh I was boiling, the fact she stood her ground till the very end made me so happy and appreciative of her as a heroine and her worrying about their regard towards her afterwards made her that much more likeable, she's just so sweet and considerate even when met with the worst behaviour. sure, she can be too trusting and trying to resolve conflicts in an honest and direct way which is just not how things work in the world she's becoming a part of but she is a girl turning into a young woman. as far as I'm concerned, any mistakes she makes, I forgive.
"my favorite thing about henry is his house" what a valid take lmao i am yet to read a description of the abbey but henry so far is giving me mixed feelings, I checked the ages and they're 17 and 25? so I feel like I'm getting a bit of a condescending attitude from him? but I might be wrong. it would be natural, though, as catherine is a teenager and his brain is supposedly fully developed, that her more childish view of things would call for amused reactions on his side. I don't know, so far really my focus is on "where and how are things going to get messy" because in this book quite a lot of the time nothing is truly really..happening? hahah and I was promised drama from jane austen herself in the first chapters:
"It is now expedient to give some description of Mrs. Allen, that the reader may be able to judge, in what manner her actions will hereafter tend to promote the general distress of the work, and how she will, probably, contribute to reduce poor Catherine to all the desperate wretchedness of which a last volume is capable- whether by her imprudence, vulgarity, or jealousy - whether by intercepting her letters, ruining her character, or turning her out of doors."
I started this book quite a while ago but this has stuck with me and maybe I am misunderstanding and she is actually not going to do these things (I love all the sarcasm but sometimes I have trouble catching it cause, well, non-native english speaker) or I am supposed to be on the lookout the whole time lol but in any case I EXPECT ACTION. PLEASE. it's such a short novel, why are there boring parts 😔
responsible really seems to be the most desirable trait in an austen man but I get it and honestly it's a good thing to consider in dating nowadays as well 🤷‍♀️ as for Henry's other qualities, I forgot he understands fabrics!! thank you for reminding me. that guy has so much sensitivity about him so why must he be such a lil gremlin at times 😂
i agree with you completely <3 austen's heroines are just women being women and i love that though they share some noble qualities they're all easy to distinguish from each other (considering some plotlines are quite similar.) catherine might be, so far, the one most after my own heart out of all the girls.
I may update on how I feel about all of the characters and the story so I'll try to tag in case you're interested in my ranting 😊 would love to hear from you again, it's so exciting receiving a message about this, you have no idea, I usually only discuss shows so my liveblogging of reading the novel actually reaching someone and prompting an ask is such a delight, thank you so much for sending a message and a long one at that 🥰💓

… So much of an actor’s craft is figuring out the “I want” of their character, but that’s got to be a little different with Tom since he states that he literally cannot want anything. What challenge or opportunity did that pose for you?
I think he wants to improve. I think he wants to calibrate according to Alma’s needs, wants, and desires. I think he’s very ready to learn and to understand. That was the kind of primary objective: listen, learn, calibrate, improve. That’s almost the track of each scenario. He just gets a little better each time, and the process gets a little faster. But certainly, in the beginning, he’s just delivering this sort of 20 classic chat-up lines that he’s been uploaded with and getting it all wrong. It’s fun to watch the machine learn and chart that progress.
On a practical or philosophical level, how did you approach the process of humanizing a character that’s an algorithm, or did you at all?
It was very much about charting with Maria exactly when we want to see the machine, when we want to see the human. Even playing with that ratio was really interesting and fun. It’s not so much about watching him play the machine, but watching a character try to play the human. Certainly, in the beginning, in some of the not quite so successful human moments, shall we say, we deconstructed what we regarded as the conventional human behavior in that. We looked at a lot of screwball comedies, like Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Katharine Hepburn movies. [We were] taking a move or a gesture, breaking that down, and just doing two of the things. It just suddenly looks very odd and wrong, and you’re like, “Oh, this is what a human does in this moment!” But it’s just off. It was really as much about looking at the human.
You’ve mentioned things like The Philadelphia Story as shaping the film and its central relationship. Was that to ground it in reality or further ensconce it in the warped reality of cinema? Grant and Stewart are recognizable to us as people, but things like that mid-Atlantic lilt were entirely manufactured for the screen.
That was a very key point for Maria in referencing Cary Grant. The hair color that we chose for Tom was very much like Cary Grant’s hair color, being a shade darker than is possibly human. And the skin tone being slightly artificial for Tom. You’re right, Cary Grant is often very heightened and mannered sometimes, and it works in the situation in the style of the thing that he’s in. But we quite liked the idea that Tom has been uploaded with some outdated versions of what a romantic lead was supposed to behave like.
It’s striking just how thought-out things had to be down to how Tom responds to dead air space in a conversation. What was the process behind those small moments that can make or break the believability of a character?
It was very fun to play with, and probably quite frustrating for a lot of the human actors. Maren was giving a beautifully naturalistic performance, and the conventional responses that there should be from her scene partner weren’t there. We deliberately strip those away—sometimes without telling her, sometimes without needing to tell her. It’s just the way that Tom was, so it was about pushing those moments into a space that became a little uncomfortable: not jumping in on the lines where you might normally jump in, sometimes coming in hard, sometimes offering a delayed response, sometimes none at all. Playing with those, and watching how comfortable or uncomfortable that made them both, was really fun.
Did that frustration, built in by the process, bleed over for Maren into the character of Alma, do you think?
Maybe for Maren. Certainly, for me, it was frustrating in that I would have to remember not to respond in the way that I might normally and remove some of those things. [I had to] really break down exactly what Tom is thinking, what his programming is doing in that point, how he’s responding and calibrating, and whether we see that or not. Choosing moments to show the human, to show the machine. Along with Maria, that was one of the great joys of the role.
How did you settle on the physicality of the character? Was it at all helpful to have done something like Beauty and the Beast in a mo-cap suit to be hyper-aware of how your own movements translate to the screen?
Very much so. In fact, in pretty much every role I’ve done since Beauty and the Beast, I’ve incorporated not always a movement coach, but I’ve definitely looked at movement theory and physicality in a totally new way because of the challenges of that role. And, I have to say, dance plays a huge part in that. Whether it’s incorporated on the screen or if it’s something that just feels as if it helps the role, I often find that a dance studio is a very fruitful space to discover things about your character’s physicality. Learning the rumba for this role was incredibly helpful because it’s a very precise, technical, almost robotic dance in terms of the laser precision that’s needed to get it absolutely right. I had a fantastically exact teacher in Berlin who was teaching me the rumba the whole way through the shoot. We shot that [one scene] quite near the end of the shoot. Just to have those lessons, that kind of physicality, and that poise with me the whole way through the role was really useful.
How did the role being in a non-native tongue affect the characterization of Tom? Was it all easier to make him seem slightly unreal given that the words might not come quite as naturally as they would in English?
I think it was a deliberate choice on the part of Maria to look for a foreign actor who could speak German. She needed somebody who could both get their heads and their mouths around the very technical German that was required, which, even for a German is pretty complex, but also who had that sense of otherness. I’m sure they could have tailored the screenplay to any number of nationalities, but I was very happy they came to me and made him British. It definitely helped with, as I say, the fact that he’s listening, learning, focusing, trying to improve…that was literally all I was doing last summer, every day.
How do you lock onto the frequency of German comedy, which isn’t always something people associate with that country or people? How is it different than doing something like the more mannered British wit of Blithe Spirit or the broad studio comedy of Eurovision Song Contest?
It’s not a country known for it, but I think they should [be]. I find Germans very funny. They have a very interesting sense of humor. What’s particularly delightful is the way that they can tackle really kind of big, sometimes weighty, issues with a certain wit and lightness of touch, which is not common to all countries. Physical comedy, I think, is fairly universal. I think there’s something almost farcical about some of the physical stuff that we managed to get in this. It was really fun to make people laugh in a foreign language. It was surprisingly delightful. It felt very unifying, somehow, to be able to get a joke across in any language.

Yay I’m actually happy to hear that catty does have rolls 🥹 I don’t have her doll but she is definitely up there for some that I want! And yes no one says rainbow high is a plus sized doll brand, an I’m not saying they are but they’re thicker than the thickest MHG3 doll 😭😭. I just wish people would call things as they are, draculaura is pear shaped, I think catty has a more hour glass? I know her upper body is bigger than Dracs(I might be wrong). But I think that would be way more helpful over just saying anything and everything is plus size and should represent all plus size people, but maybe that’s a change the world as a whole has to do and not just one doll Brand 😭
And yeah i personally wouldn’t consider schools out a core refresh type of line personally. I thought about it but I think it’s the different themes of the “rebrand”. Like you said for G3 it seems to just be a design upgrade/ replacement. I often see people wishing for other characters like Twyla or ghoulia to get a refresh doll. Where schools out / new scaremester seemed like new outfits yes but also new characters and their core outfits as well! And Mattel is definitely pulling from its G2 rejects in my opinion. Art style wise and doll release wise idk, it’s just very lack luster. They’ve definitely made a lot of dolls over the past year or two, but there’s hardly any new characters that have been introduced, I feel like the “skulltimate secret” theme they are going for just isn’t landing well in my opinion. I’m also a bit of an art style prude I guess, because I cannot stand the new mixed assets they use, it literally boils my blood sometimes when I see the old box art being used to promote new things. Hell just the art this generation is just very plain and there’s no fun art splashes, just highly rendered full bodies/them sitting idk 😭.
And yeah I do also wish that we got to see Frankie explore their gender more? I know everyone experiences things differently, but I would have liked to see Frankie’s journey to discovering that they’re nonbinary instead of just being born out the womb with it. And I don’t want it to be like in a sad or “realistic” way, I want it to be fun and campy and really corny. They need to introduce the other nonbinary characters STAT😤 we already talked about torelai and clawdeen 😭😭 but Im an avid clawvenus Stan, I need it to happen. Howleen and Venus are cool too I guesssss orz. I honestly wish G3 went a bit bolder with their relationship pairs and mixed a bunch of the cast up like Cleo and Frankie. Because as we said before all the ships are so dry, like let’s add some spice to it or something. Give us draculaura x heath Or abbey idk 😭 like let’s get funky.
And yeah the music videos are the only media that actually correlate to the dolls 😭 I saw the catty one and 👀 catty x Venus? I’m coping but we will see lmao
Monster high G3 rant
Watching the TV series and I’m kind of disappointed.
This will be my second watch of season 1, I’m rewatching after the current season 2 episodes.
the show feels very flat in my opinion. They’ve given the characters a lot of cool traits, but they’re used for like one episode and then never brought up, or they only use one specific trait 24/7. Like Frankie in this generation, they have the ability to electrocute, extend their body parts, and they get visions from the people they’re made out of. Specifically they get visions from this one recurring doctor/ scientist. The idea is cool, but the vision literally is there to give exposition about something conveniently. Like when they are trying to solve the puzzle of clawdeens mom, Frankie’s vision just conveniently tells them what to do and how to do it.
In that same episode, we see manny taur. A Minotaur character. And right away we are just told that he’s good at puzzle solving, and so is draculaura! They’re rivals! But this is the first time I’ve ever seen or heard about draculaura being into puzzles, let alone her one sided rivalry with manny. And as the episode ends, she’s like “well you can be the rightful puzzle master” but it feels so flat. There has been no build up to this moment.
Another example is lagoona. In her designated episode, she is rooting for torelai to win the fear-leading captain over draculaura (another thing that has no build up as to why it’s important to her) lagoona explains that torelai is holding a secret over her head, and if it gets out she will lose her status as the fiercest monster in school. But this is the first time we have heard this!! In previous episodes there’s no mention of her being scary or fierce. Or even her super fast swimming skills. It’s just brought up and glosses over with a “be who you are, it’s okay to like what you want! We all have secrets 🥹” but there’s no real character development.
My last example will be the way draculaura is presented in this series. From what she tells us, she has high standards to live up to as a vampire. She needs to look good for her day so she studies endlessly and is striving for perfection. But she also has a love for witchcraft, which is banned in monster high due to its connections to humans. This can be a cute premise, but they NEVER show draculaura compared to any other vampire to show how she’s supposed to act. They never give us episodes where she blows off her friend’s shenanigans because it makes her look bad, and they never really show her dad being so overbearing. They don’t show us WHY humans are hated. And even though witchcraft is banned, whenever anyone finds out about it they’re just cool with it? No push back or anything. The only character to challenge draculaura was torelai.
This all may be very nitpicky, but MH is a character driven franchise. Character relationships with each other and their surroundings are very important to me. I want to feel the so called pressure these characters are being put under. It doesn’t have to be ultra serious 24/7, but issues get resolved within one episode and then rehashed a few episodes later with no further development. Especially with characters like Cleo and lagoona. They have been benched as side characters in this show, and side characters get much worse treatment.
‘The general episode progression is like this - introduce an issue, introduce a high stakes situation that involves the school, have all or one of the main 3 engage in a sequence of fights against this issue(or rapid solving of said issue through convince) - issue is resolved and lesson is told to viewers-characters reset for the next episode.
I know this is a children’s show, but that doesn’t mean it needs to have bad writing, not all kids are high off cocomelon. Kids deserve good writing in their media!
My next rant will be about clawdeen and her story this generation

this was meant to be a two or three sentence thought but it got super long so this is my post-berseria rambling thoughts post
even though he's... kind of a shitty bitch... i do think i still love artorius. especially especially especially how his arc contrasted with velvet's. both of them were shattered by the loss of their loved ones, but they were given different paths for their grief to motivate them to go down. velvet was pitied by a guilty seres who recognized that what artorius was doing was wrong, and so given an opportunity to seek her revenge against him. along the way, she healed sort of... accidentally, as a side effect of having to rely on others to achieve her goal. in the end, she was able to recognize the beauty in both the good and bad aspects of humans. artorius, on the other hand, was dragged by melchior into externalizing his despair and forcing it upon the rest of the world in an attempt to save them. so... velvet started out seeking to kill, and didn't care what she had to destroy to do it, but eventually became humanity's savior, while artorius started out trying to save humanity (and also didn't care what he had to do to do it), and ended up nearly destroying it. i could be way off the mark, but artorius and his efforts really really really seemed like a metaphor for depression. during the suppression, the most blatant example of this was people committing suicide en-masse because they considered themselves unredeemable, but there were also people who could no longer take care of their pets and let them starve to death, and people giving up on their passions. overall it kind of seems like this game's biggest theme (or, at least, the one that resonated most with me) is the question of "is life worth living after your happiness is stolen away from you?"
the abbey's answer would be "no," of course, and they serve as a stand-in for the position of giving up on happiness to avoid the pain that inevitably comes with it
velvet, aifread's crew, and laphicet's answers would be "yes," with aifread's crew holding a pretty explicit position of "who cares if me and my friends die, it's worth it to live the way that makes us happy"
magilou's in a really unique position in all this, as she was formerly a member of the abbey, and a big part of her character is the fact that she's... pretty dead inside. despite that though, she seems almost desperate to relearn how to live as opposed to just be alive. i don't really have much more specific to say about her, but that was my impression
melchior was a dumb bitch. he was motivated by stupid "progress of humanity" garbage. im glad he died like a clown.
after thinking about it this much, i think i have a clearer idea of why i latched onto this game so hard. it asks the same question ive been asking myself for a few years now, and many of the characters did exactly what ive been trying to do that whole time. what i said about magilou earlier was informed pretty much entirely by my own experiences, which is funny, because someone very important to me told me im a lot like her. i didn't understand why until know, and im not quite sure if it was a lucky guess or if they know me a lot better than i had thought
this game really was an amazing experience for me, and it's kind of funny to think that i just started playing it on a whim. it's the kind of thing that makes me wonder if stuff really does happen for a reason. while i was... acquiring it... i was having some difficulties, and i asked myself if it would be worth all the trouble. and it was! it really really was! ive never been able to call a game my favorite game before, but this is it. im just so glad i tried it. it's pretty exceedingly rare for me to play games to completion, too.
i have a lot more on my mind, but there's really nothing more i can say right now.

THIS SHOULD BE NUMBER 1. we all got emma in the brain and overall -- yes, this is the hottest austen movie ever made. i agree. and this was a very close number 2, but once you see number 1 you will get me. there is this line in austenland that really pisses me off, the narrator (thinks? its told about her? i don’t remember if its in first or third person) that she has re-read every single austen book except northanger abbey. and sure, its a funny joke, BUT WHY NORTHANGER WHEN MANSFIELD PARK IS RIGHT FUCKING THERE??? anyways, reasons why this is the best scene: the fact they are almost crying before they kiss, they are so emotional about getting engaged that they are practically buzzing. the way they are both nodding yes before they kiss. THE FACT SHE FUCKING DRAGS HIM INTO THE SHRUBBERY TO MAKE OUT!!! SHE HAS BEEN PINING FOR WEEKS NOW AND SHE IS NOT WASTING THIS OPPORTUNITY!! the height difference!! the way she is dragging herself up and the way he curls around her! HENRY IS TALKING ABOUT THE FACT THEY WILL PROBABLY HAVE NO MONEY AND HE SHE IS LIKE -- WHO CARES, I JUST WANT YOU!!! his hands on her waist!!!!! this, as @je-suis-em-jee​ put it: NERD GIRL RIGHTS. anyways, its the best kiss ever in an austen adaptation, thank you very much for reading this essay, if you have not watched this version (WHY THE FUCK NOT) its on youtube and its a masterpiece.
