Okay, lets talk Death Note.
this is my opinion + personal review on the movie, as a fan, as a movie critic, and as an audience.
Before talking about the movie, lets talk about some important things about Death Note
Death Note * DOES NOT * need to be set in Japan, the movie wasnt dead from the start, they just did it wrong.
The idea of Light Yagami is that he's a smart, pretty, intelligent perfect strong boy but also knows the world is shit.
Death Note plays a lot with the concept that anyone can be a villain if you let the power get to your head or when you try to do justice with your own hands, and that's when Kira stands out. Even though Kira lets the power overcome his head he's still cold, smart and one step ahead of everyone to create his own " pefect world ". He is, quite literally, a Genius with the power of a God.
And then we have L, the shadow to Kira's Light, an rank SSS FBI Detective that never lost a case in his life, he doesnt care much for anything really because he knows he's better than everyone, he is, by far, the most intelligent person in Japan. He knows he'll win, you know he will win, its just a matter of time.
And that's what Death Note is in his crux, you watch geniuses square up and try to beat each other in a mental match of chess involving the entire world. If you go watch the movie expecting this, you'll be disappointed. VERY disappointed.
The movie is clearly an Hollywood take on the story, Misa Amane, the Psycho J-Idol obsessed with Kira is now Mia, Light Turner's love interest/teen love. Light Yagami is not Light Turner, a typical sentimental dude that isnt vaguely smart, he acts on his feeling and makes mistakes, never accepts being Kira and never accepts the Death Note.
And i shit you not, this is actually pretty cool in the movie, the relationship between them 2 is, infact, very interesting, specially in the end when the story starts to unravel. The relationship between all the " new " characters ( L included) its actually a strong point in the movie. The first convo between L and Kira its great material and by far my favorite part of the movie.
While we’re on the topic of L, personally, i think he was also a strong point in the movie. Very different from the original series, yes, but a good (new) character overall and the acting was on point.
Now, what makes this movie... bad?
-Lack of development and strategy
The best thing about Death Note is easily the strategies that Kira uses to try to beat L and vice-versa, each episode/arc is a chess match and that's just not present in the movie. Because of the simple fact that Light Turner is pretty dumb and sentimental, we cant see him try to outsmart L. In fact, the closest we get of a one vs one chase is a 20 minute sequence of Kira running in the street while L tries to catch him, phisically, while he screams " KIRA, STOP! "
- Lack of attention to detail
Literally what the fuck, the plot holes in the movie are all over the place, why didnt L just track Kira's phone? Why are the book's rules contradicting each other, why is there a scene of Misa screaming with Kira in a crowded hallway about being Kira and killing people. This is the type of detail that the manga/anime pays a lot attention to not execute.
- Fixing your story on the ground and making it feel real.
They * had * to develop more the world of Death Note, the characters, the death note itself, Ryuk, the lore, everything is so rich and complciating in the story it neets to be treated and fixed and explained very well to people understand what is going on. I'm not going to enter in details here because of ~ spoilers ~ but the phrase i heard people repeat on and on while watching the movie is " what the fuck is happening rn? "
- Characters contradicting themselves
For a story with very few characters, bad character writing is not expected but here we are. Basic stuff like being so " correct " while 10 minutes earlier we see him selling his school test for cash. L being all casual and calculist while he dresses and acts like an edgy teenager with anger issues...
- Pacing
I see a lot of people using the " bruh 35 episodes smashed together in a 1:40 hour long movie, its gotta be fast paced " but no. Just no, what we see in the movie is like 30% of the actual series itself, we see like, what, 8 episodes? This is not an excuse for having an horrible movie pacing while everything happens way too fast and we dont know character's real motivations.
- Song choices.
Play a fun game, while you're watching the movie, take 1 shot of tequila each time you catch yourself laughing about the awkward song choice. You'll end up boozed.
Anyway, these are all problems the movie has as a commom movie, its not that its a bad adaptation, its just a bad movie. Was it entretaining? Yes. Was it good? No.
