Why do my limbs feel so heavy...?

The waking world came like a flashbang to his senses, with all the colors stabbing through his video processors like needles. Did someone mess with his settings again..? Turn them up too high?

It hurt to think.

And yet... it seemed to be the only thing that Billy was capable of at the moment. The effort it was taking to come back online scared him a little- a lot, actually. Was his battery dying? Was he dying!?

What happened? Where am I..? Wasn't I.. on a mission?

The mission!

Bits and pieces of his last waking hours begin to filter through, each snapshot sending painful waves through his circuits like one of Nicole's scolding hits.

Entering the Hollow with their client..

The Ethereals being easier to fight off for some reason.

Celebrating... suspicion..

Anby's swords fizzling out..

Nothing.

"...e.. omin- line?" …they sounded familiar. Worried, though, they shouldn't sound worried. None of his friends should sound like that ever.

"...ot su..."

Small, cold hands gently touched his face. Familiar hands, with chewed fingernails and callouses.

"Ther- ..aw.. low!"

This time, Billy could vaguely feel clawed fingertips clutching onto his jacket. It still hurt to even consider fighting through the static that seemed intent on blanketing him..

But if his friends were worried...

"Bi-..y!" "...-ly!" "Billy?"

The final nail in his coffin of awareness comes in the form of a manicured hand threading through synthetic hair and guiding his aching head up on something soft, "Billy ...-ake up, right now!"

He finally manages to crack his eyes open, and keep them open, as he takes in the blurry forms around him.

Nekomata was clutching at his arm, probably causing little tears in the leather of his jacket- not that he minded too much, it could be fixed- Anby was practically nose to nose with him, her amber eyes tracking... something.. and Nicole was...

Letting him rest on her lap?

Oh Starlight Knights, he really was dying, wasn't he?

The manicured hand in his hair smacks him- but, gently. More like a tap, if anything.

"Don't even joke about that! You're not dying, Billy."

Oh! That was nice to know. Boss wouldn't lie to him.

"...he's really out of it, huh? Meow.."

Those calloused hands on his face pat his forehead consolingly and Billy's foggy brain finally connects them to Anby. It was sort of nice to be touched like this, actually, even if he was in pain. It'd been a while since he'd had a hug.

"Billy..."

The hands on him twitch slightly, like a flinch, before pressing closer. More solidly establishing their presence.

Was he talking out loud?

"Oh... yeah, yeah you are, Billy." Oh. Wait- Manager!?

The static in his head spikes suddenly, and it makes it impossible to catch any of the following conversation. He can barely even question when Phaethon had shown up. Or- the siblings went by a different name now, didn't they?

"-r... t's- ourse."

It was getting harder to catch words, again..

"...recover.. f- ..ays."

Something cold presses against his forehead, the too bright too hazy surroundings dim. Was he powering off again..? He didn't want to be alone...

"It's ok... " It was?

"We'll be- ..ere.. wh- ..wake up."

...promise?

"Promise."

ok... Billy's eyes slip shut.

The Boss wouldn't lie to him, after all.

You didn’t know what the file was, or how it ended up on your desktop. It was just there when you turned on your computer today; a small folder icon labeled “ H̷e͘l͢͢҉lo͟ .”

You hesitated for a good while before you decided to open it. You figured if it was a bug or something, your computer would be able to block it. You paid good money for that virus protection. You click on the file.It starts running some sort of program, and for a minute or two, all you see is a black screen. Then words start to appear, with the option to reply underneath.

“Hell̛o. Ìt'͝s ͟nicè to ̀meet ̷y͞o̴u͞.”

You cock an eyebrow. Maybe it was some kind of video game? Shrugging, you typed up a simple “Hello” in response. A couple seconds passed. Another line of text appeared.

“Yo͘u̕ ̛a͡r̛e...͟ ͘i̷n͝te̕r̴esting̀.”

You blinked in confusion as you read the statement. You moved your fingers along the keyboard.

“What? Why?”

“I ́thi̢n̡k yo̶u'͞ll ͘do̶ ͝jus̸t f͢ine̵. Tell me...  w͜oul̴d̨ ҉yóu ͠l͝ik͠e͞ t̷o͏ ͝ha͡ve͞ s͞om̵e̵ ͏fun̛?́”

You let out a quiet snort. What kind of AI was this? It didn’t even answer you properly. Oh well. You decided to keep going.

“Like what?”

“Óh͞͡͏.͏.. ̵y̡o̷̷u'͏̷̕l̷̛̀ļ̶͞ ̷͢f̢ì̀͞n̷d̢ ͟ó̢u̴̴͝t̶͜ so̡o̷͞͡ǹ̢ ̸͜͢ę̛͝n̨óu̢͞g͜h̵͘.̕͡”

With that statement, the program closed itself, the mysterious file disappearing with it. You sat back in your chair, feeling incredibly puzzled. Was that it? Well that wasn’t very- wait, what was that? Did your screen just... fizzle? Or were you seeing things? You lean forward to better scan the screen. Just as you start to believe it was nothing, the screen flickers again, the colors distorting as the images warped. A message flashed maliciously on the screen, sending a pang of unease into your chest.

T҉͟i͏̨͡m̷̧e҉̡ ̷̷͜t̸͞ơ ̵̴̢p͟l̴̢a͏̷͠y͢͞.

Then another.

You didn’t move, your body tensing. Had you been hacked? What the hell was this? And how were you supposed to hide from the computer? Nervously, you leaned over behind your tower to unplug the machine. How about no? You glanced back at the screen, only to have your heart skip a beat. The monitor was still on, and was flashing an angry looking message. Just one word.

H̶̕͠I̴͏D̨Ę̢̛ .

You leapt from your chair, backing away from the computer with a newfound anxiety. Shit.This was bad. This was very, very bad. Your head whipped back and forth around the room. What should you do? Run away? Call the cops? What the f-

The computer gives a loud beep. You turn to the screen. The message is no longer a word, but a number.

You stiffen. After a few seconds, it beeps again.

Oh shit. You back further away before spinning around and sprinting out the door, looking around frantically. You head for the front door, going for the handle. You turn it. The door doesn’t open. What!? But you should be able to open it from the inside!! You jiggle the handle again. Still nothing. You hear another beep. Dammit! You abandon the door and run to your room, closing the door behind you with a loud slam! You then lunge for your phone, pushing the on button with shaky hands. The screen lights up, and you stifle a cry of fear. The screen shows a number.

You hurl the device at the wall, causing it to crack and fall dead on the floor. Running out of ideas, you duck into your closet and close the door. You push yourself behind the clothes into the corner and crouch there, holding your knees to your chest and shivering. This had to be some kind of sick prank, or a nightmare. What the hell was going on!? You sit in a panicked state for what seems like too long, each second more agonizing than the last. The beeping continues... until it doesn’t. You sit and wait in the silence.

A soft scraping sound starts emanating from somewhere in the house. Your grip on your legs tightens. Slowly but surely, it’s getting closer. It moves across the walls, creeping towards your room with menace. You hear it approach your door... and then fall silent. You hold your breath. Nothing stirs.

And then your closet door is thrown open, and a hand reaches in to grab you by the collar and drag you out. You let out a sharp cry, trying to resist, but their grip is as tight as iron. A knife is quickly pushed towards you and threatens your neck. Terrified, you look your assailant in the face. A pair of cold blue eyes stares back at you. A wide, toothy grin flashes beneath them. A distorted voice enters your ears with an unsettling happiness to it.
