I've tried like three different apps and various websites and youtube videos, and everyones trying to simplify the 한글 consonants down to just 'what latin letter this tends to sound most like' when what i really want is someone to go through and tell me what my mouth and tongue and throat are supposed to be doing for each one

like ㄹ isn't '/l/ but sometimes /r/ in these specific cases!' its a very specific sound that I can make sometimes when I'm reminded of where my tongue is supposed to be, and having pronunciation guides try to tell me when an American ear would hear it as an 'r' is just defeating the objective of me trying to get it consistently right

#maybe i'm being too prescriptive about this or something?? maybe its more important to just get a general idea #and get the correct pronunciation figured out later?#but i took like one semester of a history of english language class with a professor i absolutely hated #and he didnt do a great job at teaching me personally the older pronunciation forms of english #but i remember him specifically talking about mouth shapes and how sounds changed over time because how people made the sounds #changed over time #and idk. i think ever since then i've been very aware of that? sounds are made intentionally by the organs we use to speak #when we've been speaking our whole lives its second nature but new sounds have to be made in new ways #i cant just coopt an old sound in place of a new one i'm trying to learn yknow?#im trying to memorize the consonants right now - i think i'm actually doing OK?#but it helps that they have names and are grouped into mouth-shape groupings #also i have an intense desire to make flash cards #i havent made flash cards for anything since i was twelve
