wait wait wait, is that little sweater scully wears in her apartment in war of the coprophages the same one in small potatoes??
YAAAASSS! Anon, here I was just sitting on my couch depressed about the state of the world, about to log into to Tumblr to scream into the void, and then I get THIS INSPIRING MESSAGE?! You’ve seriously turned my day around and now I am here to preach to you the gospel of Scully’s grey cashmere cardigan!
LET’S TAKE A SCULLY FASHION JOURNEY SHALL WE?!
AFAIK, the grey cashmere cardigan makes its first appearance in War of the Coprophages as Scully’s casual Friday Night at Home Look™, which pairs perfectly with bathing your dog, eating salad and ice cream, and talking for hours with your v platonic partner on your large cordless phone.

After War of the Coprophages, Grey Cashmere Cardigan (hereafter referred to as “GCC”) becomes Scully’s de-facto “casual look” in seasons 3 and 4, which is very in-character. This is a bitch who sleeps in silk pjs and wears a blazer to the beach, so RATIONALLY, she’s gonna choose a luxurious knit in her downtime. Side note: from a behind the scenes perspective, grey is always a bold choice as it tends to look shitty on-camera (not so much with the high-def options that we have nowadays, but with what they were shooting with back in the day… trust me, this was a brave fashion choice). Since this grey tilts a bit on the blue side, it brings out her eyes, looks classy, is easier on the lens, and is just oh so Scullbag. Wardrobe deserved a fucking Emmy.As far as my research tells me, GCC’s next appearance is in Apocrypha - which is surprising, since this isn’t an episode we associate with Casual!Scully by any stretch. Here, the GCC serves a narrative purpose; it shows just how illegal M&S’ entry into the government silo really is, since they’re performing this brazen B&E on their downtime.

GCC gets its next play in Quagmire, which makes sense because the episode is *so casual and foresty* they’re basically camping. Dana Scully wears cashmere blends in the woods, y’all.

Research tells me that GCC goes dark in the (equally very dark) season 4, until it makes its triumphant return in Small Potatoes:

I mean… obviously sharing a bottle of wine in front of a roaring fire with your platonic partner (shh don’t ruin this for me) is peak Casual.
At the end of season 4, GCC reappears a few eps later in Demons, again serving the narrative purpose that whatever is happening in this episode is happening in their downtime, and not in their official capacities as the worst but most in love FBI Agents of all time:

And though to me, Gesthemane holds the most iconic grey sweater moment in Scully fashion history, close analysis tells me it is *not the same cardigan*. But here’s a pic of her looking angelic in a VERY SIMILAR look (let’s call her Grey Cardi B!):

As far as I can tell, the GCC trend dies after season 4, but if anyone else has further researched this phenomenon, please share your findings.–end here if you don’t want to read the following season 11 rant–Anyway, the casual GCC is part and parcel why I couldn’t get on board with the people in the fandom who cried over Scully’s new digs that made a brief appearance in season 11 (I’m talking about it from an aesthetic perspective *only*, OF COURSE I WOULD PREFER THAT SHE LIVES WITH HER HUSBAND). Like people were really out here saying that Dana Katherine Scully, patron saint of multiple matching silk pj sets, would never be that ostentatious and I was like… bitch how?! Scully is a LUXURY HO. SHE CARRIES AN EMERGENCY BLAZER AT ALL TIMES AND NO NOT JUST IN CHINGA SHE WAS LITERALLY WEARING BLAZERS OVER CHRISTMAS WITH HER FAMILY FFS. Of COURSE she’s gonna live somewhere fancy and own a $200 vibrator because she works hard for her money and she DESERVES IT. Thanks for this inspiring this journey, anon. GCC forever.
