Minoxidil for Beard Growth? Be Careful
You might have heard of it, the magic Minoxidil (or Rogaine) has helped many men to sprout facial hair, overcoming their hairless genetics. I’m not going to talk about how it works here, there are tons of information and documented journeys out there on the web. I looked at all these successes and thought it’d be fun to try it out. I didn’t do very much research at all. After all, there has been so much anecdotal evidence of its positive effects. However, after 2 months of treatment, I am here to warn anyone who is looking to try using Minoxidil to tread cautiously.
Minoxidil’s success was proven in clinical trials to treat crown baldness. However, it has not been shown to help with hairline recession. Why do I mention this? Because while I only applied the foam to my face to help with facial hair growth, I started losing hair at my temples. My hairline receded noticeably within 2 months of Minoxidil treatment. Men on both sides of my family have very lush, full heads of hair. My maternal grandfather, when he passed away at the age of 85, did not show any signs of male patten baldness. Therefore, I was completely taken off guard. I had not hear anyone talk about this effect, but a quick Google search pulled up many complaints on forums about this issue (forum post) . Rapid hairline recession happened for a lot of people, even if they’re applying Minoxidil to the hairline for the precise desire for frontal regrowth. One person mentioned that “the Minoxidil ate up [his] hairline.”
The exact way Minoxidil helps hair regrowth is not actually known. There are various good theories, but no definitive, studied, and proven answer. The drug started off to treat low blood pressure. After a while, it was noticed that there was a consistent side effect of hair growth. The drug was then re-branded to as a hairloss combating agent. I read some talked of Minoxidil containing carcinogenic ingredients, but I did not find good sources to confirm.
Now, I’m not saying it doesn’t work or that this will happen to everyone. Personally, I stopped after 2 months of treatment because I felt like my frontal hairloss did not occur just from the “shedding” phase, but was directly caused by Minoxidil. Your mileage may vary, but please watch out. This is not some miracle drug that people have touted it to be.
