Alex giving Brainy a forehead kiss
Brainy, Alex can see, is not okay.
At first, it seemed like what happened with his inhibitors was a good thing. It let Brainy makes connections more quickly, and it seemed to help him in general to work better and be happier. But now Alex thinks it might be getting to be too much, and Brainy is starting to spiral.
He’s loath to admit it, when she finally corners him to ask. “I’m fine,” he assures her, as if she can’t see the way his hands are shaking, the way his eyes dart around without focusing on anything. “I’m okay.”
“You’re not,” Alex says gently. “And that’s okay, Brainy, but you need to be honest with me so we can make it better.”
His eyes focus on her for an instant, then skitter away. “I- I just need to get used to this again.”
“Get used to what?”
“My thoughts,” Brainy explains hesitantly. “I- In the thirty-first century, I have a… a system, for dealing with them. I have a… well, a support network, I suppose you would say. But I don’t have the same things here. That’s why I changed the level of the inhibitors in the first place. I’ve been more inhibited here than I usually am in the future. But now, the inhibitors have reset to their usual level, and I just- I need-” He takes a deep breath. “I’ll be alright,” he tells Alex with an unconvincing smile. “I just need to get used to it.”
Alex stares at him, and she’s vaguely aware of her heart breaking in her chest. “Brainy, you have a support network here. If you need us, we’ll help you. You don’t have to go through this alone, and you certainly don’t have to inhibit yourself. Let us support you. Let me help.”
Brainy’s eyes focus on her again, then they dart away. “It’s not… easy. To help me. I know it isn’t, especially not for just one person. I wouldn’t ask you-”
“You’re not asking. I’m offering,” Alex says. “I want to help.”
“Are you certain? I-”
Alex steps forward and kisses Brainy’s forehead, right where the cut was that impacted his inhibitor in the first place. She feels Brainy shiver a little under her, but he doesn’t pull away. She doesn’t think he wants to. She certainly doesn’t. Brainy needs support, he needs people to help him, and she’s more than willing to be one of those people. He’s a friend, and that’s what friends do.
“I’m certain. Now, tell me what I need to do.”

The “New Age” Internet
What do you think is social media's influence on your daily life?
-Social media influences my daily life from a business standpoint. I do baseball training; I am always staying consistent on Facebook mainly. This affects my daily moves and tasks because I am staying on top of the baseball world in Michigan. I used to be addicted to social media and always had to be posted for others to see. Now, I am worried about involving my business in social media. My goal is to expand my business and expand the content that is being provided to online communities.  Social media plays a significant role, and I am doing my best to evolve into a better social media guru.
How do you think having the Internet constantly available affects your life?
-I think having the Internet constantly available can be a good thing and a bad thing. The Internet is available constantly is good because: it has useful resources, allows for instant answers, allows for constant communication between people virtually, and allows for business/personal exposure. The negatives of the Internet being constantly available: People rely on it too much, the addiction to the Internet, and when it is not available, people don't know how to handle that. I believe it affects me in both ways. Sometimes I get too addicted to the Internet and can't get enough of it. Also, most of the time, it's a useful tool for me to gain knowledge and expand my horizon with my business and myself. Along the lines of communication, it helps me stay connected with new people and long-lost friends. I love the availability of the Internet because of the social networking I can do. Social networking is essential for me and how I expand my connection list.
What are some times when you haven't had access to the Internet for an extended period, and what was it like?
-I would say the longest extended period without access to the Internet is when I'm up north. I will be up there for a few days at a time, and I love it up there. The Internet isn't available up there unless you head to town, which is a 15-minute drive. I love not having the Internet available up there in most situations. The only situations I do not like not having are when there is an emergency, needing directions, or when I need to stay in contact with someone. Other than that, it's an amazing getaway from technology and a relief to not rely on the Internet. Personally, it is a self-clock reset, and I feel everyone needs a couple of weeks without Internet. I feel like being addicted to the Internet and relying on it too much can cause issues.
What are some things you would like to do to be more intentional about your use of technology?
-       I would say:
I would need to use it more for business purposes.
Networking
Use it to keep updated on close family and friends
Use it more to keep others updated and tuned with my business

Allen’s Video Game Update: Starting Fresh!
Oh right, I forgot I tag fandoms when I do my video game updates.
Hey there everyone, I’m Allen X, or Dlamp, or the Dictator, or... whatever else you want to call me. I usually doing little essays on fandoms, writing, and other stuff called Ramblings, and monthly blurbs about the anime I’m currently watching and video games I’m playing called Anime and Video Game Updates respectively. Well... I usually do the Video Game Updates monthly.
It’s... a story I wish I could take back, but I deleted all my saved data from my PS4. Around late June PSN was acting up for my PS4, I couldn’t access anything network-wise. I could play games and whatnot, but I couldn’t access the PSN store, my video apps, play online, and stuff like that, and I had PSN Plus too. I was getting some sort of error that wouldn’t grant me access. I did a bit of researching and a site said that re-initializing my PS4 would fix up it and reset everything. It would also delete my saved data, but... I’d rather have access to PSN than my save data. So, I reset my PS4, memory and all.
And sadly... I was still getting errors.
Oh, I was furious. I raged, I cried a little, but... I eventually fixed the problem by fiddle with my modem settings a little. So... I’m starting from scratch with a lot of my games. Some are fighting games and platformers that aren’t too much of a pain to redo due to either short playtime or my ranks being set on a different server, but... most of the games I play are JRPGs. JRPGs I had new game plus files waiting to be used... Yeah, I’m not happy about that one bit, but I can rage about it later, I’ve had a month or two to cool off a little, so... I’m starting from scratch again. Not much of a problem, but I’ll be doing the simpler games before moving onto the heavy stuff.
Anyway, with all that tragic story out of the way, here’s what I’ve been playing for the last few days now.
Tumblr media
Now, I’m playing Fate/EXTRA mostly so I have context to Fate/Extella. I bought Extella a week ago because I heard it was a good Warriors-type game and I was somewhat familiar with the Fate series. Plus Warriors-type games are simple and not a pain to redo, I’m still a little hesitant to buy another JRPG. However, I felt so lost after playing Nero’s campaign. I just could not care about the story, and that’s saying something since most Warriors-type games have decent/passable stories and character arcs. This one... felt like fanservice for Fate fans. Again, I myself am a casual fan of the series, watching Deen’s Fate/Stay Night, Ufotable’s Unlimited Blade Works, watching Deen’s Unlimited Blade Works movie, and watching all 4 seasons of  Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya.
But Extella... Extella was just throwing out too many terms I didn’t understand. Se.Ra.Ph.? Code Cast? Moon Cell? How every character seemed to already know each other, how the protagonist had an instant emotional relationship with Nero... It just made my head spin and had me skipping cutscene after cutscene. So, I double-checked PSN, found Fate/EXTRA available for 10 bucks, and I’m gonna’ run through this so I have some context for Extella.
I’m about four hours into this game so far and hot damn I’m using a guide for this game. There are... a lot of things I’m not liking about this game after four hours, starting with the rock-paper-scissors RNG enemies and unskippable text. This game is following an visual novel-style of trial-and-error choices, but the gameplay itself isn’t smooth enough for me to really tolerate reading through long bits of text I’ve already read. I feel like there should be a quick save option and there isn’t one. The fact you can’t save while in the Arena with enemies that are very trial-and-error in terms figuring out of attack patterns makes every death I have feel cheap. And then I have to rewatch long cutscenes and text walls I’ve already seen. Like... damn, no wonder this series is said to have a large wall of entry. With gameplay like this you have to be dedicated to stick with it.
So yeah, I’ll be using a guide with this because the internet exists and I’m not dealing with this RNG, trial-and-error nonsense that makes Fire Emblem’s 2% crit-spamming enemies look fair and balanced.
Tumblr media
Moving on, while I’m still salty about having to replay a lot of games on my PS4, and refusing to even touch any of my RPGs, Samurai Warriors 4 is a game I don’t mind starting from scratch. Warrior Series games are just fun to play in 1-hour spurts, something to pick up once a day to get some fun gaming in if you’re pressed for time. And they also tend to get boring once you collect most of the collectibles and get all the best weapons for your favorite characters, so starting the hunt over will be fun. I... don’t have much to say about this one save for the fact that I love the Warriors series and I’ve been a fan since Dynasty Warriors 3. And I get to make a bunch of cute warrior girls while traveling Japan in Chronicle mode, so... looking forward to that.
Tumblr media
And finally, I’m going to try and beat Fire Emblem Echoes. While I have... mixed feelings about Fire Emblem Echoes, I am on Act 4, I did buy DLC for it, and I do need to finish it at some point, so... I’m giving it another shot.
When I first talked about this game, I said was gonna’ do it on Classic Mode and not soft reset anything because I wanted to play this like a man and not a little boy pretend to be a grown-up. However... Slique died, Faye did, Tobin died, Kliff died, and Lukas died all on the same enemy phase and suddenly I had no mage killer, magic damage dealer, tank, or healer... so then I deleted that file and made a casual one because I’m a filthy casual that could care less about playing a game how it was meant to be played.
Now most of my issues with Echoes just comes from the fact that my first Fire Emblem game was Fire Emblem Fates and I personally like that game a lot more and I’ve played it more than this. The lack of personal skills, the fact skills are limited to what type of weapon a character is using, the fact that no one has a growth rate in resistance, the fact that random enemies spawn rather than letting you fight them optionally... This game has a lot of good things as well (love the retreat system and how supports are done), but... it’s so different from Fates that it was off-putting. I’m gonna’ try and tackle this one again now that I’ve had some time away from turn-based RPGs for awhile, but... no promises on me liking this.
And that’s the Video Game Update. Technically I’m also playing Sonic Mania, but I make it personal rule to not talk about games that can be beaten within five to seven hours, replay value or not. If you guys have any advice for me for any of this games, feel free to shoot me a message, I’d appreciate any help, especially with Echoes...

What do you love about your muse!!
questions for the mun, regarding the muse.
GOD FUCKIN
OK
SO I’M GONNA TALK ABOUT ALL MY MUSES HERE SO THIS IS GONNA GET LONG. I SHOULD PROBABLY READMORE THIS IM JUJST
Sunny this motherfucker right here like I... love how fucking SASSY he is??? It came out of NOWHERE but it started pretty early and has been a staple of his character ever since?? In fact it has gotten WORSE. Whose sassy lost child is this!!
He has been through SO MUCH and I love how despite everything he always seems to bounce back even in small ways, he always tries to find SOMETHING to do with himself even when he’s struggling. And like, man he’s been through some dark shit, maybe not as bad as some of my other muses, but that’s also been addressed IC-- so much of the little things and conflicts that have been both OOC and IC concerns get addressed IC and ironed out and made part of the character and REAL.
Fin @serafxn is-- he’s just become such a goddamn sweetheart, he’s genuinely a very soft boy and it’s almost hard to look at what he used to be in comparison but that potential to be that soft boy was always there. He’s grown so much. Like fuck dude I want this lil man to be happy and find happiness he tries so hard now. I mean I also love that he still isn’t perfect, he’s still an angry bitter little piece of shit sometimes and sometimes he DOES get those urges to go back a few steps for some instant gratification, but he’s got a good support network to stop him from dropping now. Like... I guess the thing I love about him most is that he’s real. Do u feel me
I also like... I love how dynamically he has grown. His original concept was Grungy Gross Underfell Papyrus and now he’s like... I can’t really sum him up in a simple concept anymore, I don’t think, which I mean is probably a double edged sword. I think his is definitely a story of Reclamation above all else, his story and his aesthetic are all about Reclamation and it’s like... it’s empowering??
Wow I talked for like hours about Fin fuck me
I wanna like. I wanna tell u what I love about Jitters. @jitterbcnes This asshole right here. Like-- ok, he’s low activity, he doesn’t speak up much but MAN DOES HE HAVE OPINIONS. He doesn’t usually outright share them but you know what I love about playing a guy like Jitters? HE CAN BE AN ASSHOLE. LIKE MAN CAN HE. He both does and DOESN’T keep secrets; you BET the Gasters know he doesn’t trust them. He lets them KNOW he doesn’t like them. He spooked the SHIT out of Reset for what he did to his brother when he came back from the dead. And you BET he told Ness what he thought about the whole corpse in the lab fiasco that Fin was fucked up over. Like, I think Jitters actually has a really good awareness of what he should and shouldn’t speak up about, and who to, and yeah he has unpopular opinions, and he’s a fuck who only really cares about his brother but it’s ALL FOR A REASON, and just-- god. I love that I’ve actually been able to develop him beyond dogbrain and he’s become so multifaceted??
Okay I’ll go into Check next @actxcheck because this might be a little shorter, I admittedly haven’t written a whole lot about him but what I love about him is the fact that EVERY TIME HE OPENS HIS MOUTH MY DASHBOARD TURNS INTO “SHUT THE FUCK UP CHECK” LIKE. I’VE MANAGED TO MAKE A VILLAIN I A) ENJOY PLAYING AND B) EVERYONE HATES UNANIMOUSLY... Both of which aren’t just because I literally make him say the worst possible things, he actually has REASONS for feeling how he does and saying what he does!! He’s never gone into them IC because he’s an asshole who feels like it should go without saying but man. Man I just. (clenches fist) love the reactions I get from playing him, I feel like this is a goddamn achievement
FUCK MY ASS THIS GOT LONG OK
ON EMORE MUS E
LET ME TALK ABOUT LLYR. @tanezumi
I think probably what I love most about Llyr is just how goddamn natural and fluid his development has been. I’ve admittedly had THE MOST inspiration for him lately, and I think it’s obvious. His dynamic with other characters has been great, and he and my other muses have shifted dynamics a lot from how I originally planned -- see, I was originally going to have Fin go and try to kill him some time after the conclusion of the White Death mini-arc, but he’s actually ended up way more sympathetic. His interactions with Kindness, Webs, Wings, Flaps and ESPECIALLY Hope, as well as some others including the whole fiasco with Brio, and his friendship with Slob that COMPLETELY BLINDSIDED ME IN THE BEST WAY, have brought out this much softer and more amicable side, that Fin has gotten to see -- which is a stark contrast to the man he remembers from his furthest-back childhood, a man who became straight up abusive to him and his brother due to a lifetime of wounds that he couldn’t heal. And like... instead of being this mopey miserable man trying to repent for a lifetime of sin he’s become a much more jovial, friendly, still kind of sad but ultimately very determined and persistent man who SO DESPERATELY wants to live and be free again
I guess like in short, like... it’s similar to Fin, he’s a living breathing character who is constantly growing and changing. and I just...that’s honestly what makes a character fun to play for me
I JUST LOVE MY MUSES DUDE LIKE ROLE PLAYING IS MY BIGGEST AND MOST FAVOURITE HOBBY....... AND IT HAS BEEN FOR YEARS. AND I THINK like... these are my favourite muses I have ever had even if they’ve sort of... become amalgamations of other muses I’ve had, which is actually another thing I love about them!! Fin is a lot like a witch I had in a D&D game I loved way back called Rakhan... Sunny has a lot in common with Jen honestly!! Llyr is basically Imriel 2.0, I think Check has SOME influence from Leti now I think about it... Sadly I Don’t think most people following me now would know these characters but man it’s a RIDE I tell you WHAT
I’m just... Im love
I’ve totally gone off topic with this and probably not even answered the question but fuck my dude I have a lot to say

3 Ways PPC Will Change in 2019 and 3 Ways You Can Prepare For It
2019 is here, and if you’re still running the same old ad campaigns from a year or two ago, it’s time to turn off cruise control.
As much as we would all love PPC tactics (and SEO for that matter) to stay the same, they don’t. Platforms change, provide new features and updates, and even dictate the new direction of advertising.
PPC is changing dramatically. In the last year alone, Google dramatically shifted AdWords into Google Ads, bringing countless new updates and features along with it. To meet these new changes, complacency isn’t viable anymore. We can’t cruise to the finish line.
Here are three ways that PPC is going to change in the coming year and three ways to prepare for it for a first movers advantage.
 1. Less self-serving, more customer-serving
PPC advertising is a pretty self-serving venture when comparing the outcome for advertisers vs. consumers: you put out some ads with lead magnets in attempts to either convert traffic, build brand awareness, or generate some direct sales on your products or services.
While the customer does benefit in some cases, it’s usually not the main focus.
The main focus is on landing the sale. The lead. Generating another customer for your funnel. Putting together that lead magnet or landing page ASAP to get the customer to sign up for your eBook, webinar, or online course. Using XX conversion hacks to psychologically trick them into converting.
These tactics don’t just give the general “marketing” world a bad name, they also annoy people. A lot.
And I have bad news for advertisers: users aren’t susceptible to this anymore. Searchers and internet browsers alike crave value, not a snatch and grab of your information for further annoying marketing messages.
They want content and information that is valuable, not just a clickbait post designed to get their email. And your only hope in 2019 is to create better content and value. Don’t believe me?
Codeless tested multiple content services and surveyed marketing experts, all of which said the content didn’t provide enough value and that consumers wouldn’t resonate with it to purchase.
We get bombarded with enough of that junk in our daily lives via email:
We simply don’t need more of it with PPC ads and subsequent content.
Now, study after study after study confirms that people are doing more research than ever before buying a product or paying for a service.
These studies conclude that nearly 90% of people research before buying. It’s no wonder that the DMA found that the average lead takes 7-13+ touches to generate a single viable lead.
So, what am I getting at here? The overall trend of PPC becoming less self-serving and more customer-serving to meet changing consumer actions. After all, customer satisfaction and solving customer problems is the lifeblood of continued sales and lifetime value.
I’ve already seen this trend come to fruition in 2018, too. The example I saw was nothing short of perfect, either. Let me show you.
Recently I conducted the following search on Google’s search network. Here were the top four ads ranking for my keyword search. Make a mental note if you notice anything:
The first three ads ranking for this search at basically the same: my CRM is the best, click here and buy! But take a look at the fourth-ranking ad:
Top 40 CRM software ranked. Discover the leaders in CRM.
If that isn’t customer-serving value, I don’t know what is.
This ad perfectly matches searcher intent with a customer-centric ad that focuses on providing real, valuable, insightful research material. Instead of cramming their product down customer’s throats as “the best” (which we all know is BS), they provide instant value.
While I don’t have the PPC data to back it up, I’d be willing to bet $500 on red to say they got the majority of clicks. The lesson here is: provide value. While you’ve probably heard it before, it’s another thing to see it in practice, especially on PPC ads that cost money.
Another amazing PPC strategy for customer-centric value I saw was driving visits to a knowledge portal via remarketing to middle-of-the-funnel leads:
Instead of trying to push sales messages, they sought to help the user understand their tool better, producing more value and success for each client.
On top of that, writing better PPC ads is a surefire way to be less self-serving.
Take a hard look at your current ads. Are they good? Are they asking for too much? What’s the tone? Are you measuring intent?
All of this can seem overwhelming, but it’s actually easy. How? By combining a few cool PPC tools.
First, I like to plug my ad copy ideas into a grammar tool like Grammarly, because you can have the tool assess for goals, like specific tones, intent, audience, and more:
Pretty amazing right? You can create potentially hundreds of ad variations by changing the style, emotion, audience, and intent.
Then, use Google’s new ad strength tool to measure how unique and impactful your ad will be:
This is a surefire way to create new, better ads that are less self-serving.
So, how else can you prepare for a customer-focused landscape with PPC? Here are a few ways:
Assess keyword intent: are you matching what the customer is expecting? Or are you just pushing product?
Value: are you trying to get them to convert on a dime? Or are you building up their trust in your brand by providing the right research tools at the right time?
Start focusing the content you offer users on PPC towards valuable information they want. According to State of Lead Gen 2018, these are the most valuable forms of content users are looking for:
So, give it to ‘em!
Relationships: are you developing relationships with your PPC campaigns? As in, are you genuinely helping, connecting, and symbiotically growing with your potential customers?
Personality: are you putting your brand personality into your PPC campaigns and landing pages? Customers love to connect with genuine brands that solve pain points while sharing a unique voice and authentic personality. More interactive content like podcasts, videos, webinars, and long-form blog posts will entertain and inform users capture users in the middle of the funnel.
 2. Omnichannel strategies will win big
Multichannel has been around for a long time. But omnichannel is the new kid on the block with promising performance:
73% of people use multiple channels to shop and browse products/services online
According to the Harvard Business Review, omnichannel buyers produce higher order values and lifetime value.
78% of businesses aren’t providing a smooth experience from channel to channel
What’s the difference between the two?
Multichannel is simply advertising on multiple channels, like Facebook and Google Ads. This is a very common tactic that is a great step for anyone using a single platform. Not only can you reach more people, but you can reach your target market in different formats.
The problem with multichannel is that by switching channels, your experience “resets.” This makes you prone to receiving marketing messages that you already have gotten before and aren’t matching your buying stage.
For instance, this is an ad for a brand on Facebook:
And look at how the ad experience doesn’t relate when searching on Google, despite me engaging heavily with the brand previously:
My experience turns into a first-time click, even though I am deep in the funnel.
That’s not good.
Omnichannel, on the other hand, takes multichannel to a new level. Omnichannel is a continued experience that happens on multiple platforms, picking up where the user left off.
For example, engaging with a lead magnet on Facebook and then showcasing an ad for a second, accompanying lead magnet on Google.
In terms of PPC, we can omnichannel to reach the same audience on multiple channels, pushing them down the funnel in an organized sequence.
Instead of solely relying on one channel to do one tactic, we can combine multiple for a smoother buying process. There are tons of ways to run omnichannel and cross-device advertisements now.
For instance, here are a few that you could establish in just a few minutes of extra effort compared to a standard campaign:
Use Google Ads as the starting point. Using the Search Network, target middle of the funnel keywords to bring in relevant, qualified traffic. Next, with a Facebook Pixel installed, remarket those visitors with content related to the landing page they interacted with from the search network ad.
Use Facebook as your starting point and craft brand awareness ads to a new audience (or a lookalike). Build trust and authority, and then target them in Google’s search network using remarketing lists for search ads (RLSAs).
Or, use Facebook to capture emails for dirt cheap and then continue the same experience on an email campaign. This is a strategy that kids shoe brand Wee Squeak used, generating 600 emails with $90 on Facebook and then delivering drip campaigns to drive sales online.
These are just great options in an almost infinite list of possibilities.
But, you get the point: don’t just use one channel.
Don’t feel limited to one or the other. We often see comparisons like “Which is Better: Google Ads or Facebook.”
Instead, we should be combining them for big wins.
 3. Mobile is everything now
For years we have been told about the incoming mobile takeover.
Even so, most mobile PPC campaigns aren’t mobile-optimized.
Ever search for something on Google, click the first ad on mobile and find a landing page that has one of the following issues:
Takes too long to load (past three seconds and you will suffer major traffic loss)
The user experience isn’t optimized for mobile
Converting is a pain due to long forms
The issues go on and on. PPC optimization goes way beyond just writing mobile ad types on Google Ads now.
It’s full-scale optimization for the mobile-index and more. If that means building a new mobile site, it means you have to build one. 51% of people use WordPress, and it’s free. You can’t wait any longer to be mobile ready and you have no excuse.
Whether you just started a blog, are running an ecommerce site with WordPress, or are a SaaS company, mobile experience must be front of mind.
To keep up with the trends, focus first on mobile speed. If your site isn’t loading within the first three seconds of a click, you will be wasting time on anything else you do:
No amount of A/B testing and tweaking can outrun a slow site.
Use tools like Test My Site to see what elements you can eliminate or manage for a faster site.
Once you’ve improved speed, you can start to optimize campaigns to bit on mobile traffic. To do this, increase bids on mobile devices and decrease bids on desktop in your Google Ads campaign settings:
This will ensure your traffic is only mobile device searchers even on search network campaigns.
Also, this will have a two-fold benefit:
Bringing in more mobile traffic
Ability to test for mobile as you will have a significant amount of traffic to test against! People often test too early with too little of traffic, leading to statistically insignificant tests.
Mobile experiences for ads don’t have to be generic either. If your site isn’t well optimized for mobile, try something new.
Don’t be afraid to test new strategies. For instance, one of the most creative mobile PPC strategies I’ve ever seen was using a chatbot as the landing page in a PPC campaign:
This campaign by Fran at Landbot generated a 100% increase in his conversion rates. That’s right, he set up a landing page on his website so that every PPC click on Google search directed people into a chatbot conversation.
Amazing!
Mobile is everything now. And it’s time for all digital marketing entrepreneurs to improve our mobile PPC.
 Conclusion
It’s tempting to sit back and let your 2018 campaigns go on autopilot in 2019. Especially if they are working.
And if they are working, there is no need to pause them.
But, PPC is changing right before our eyes. Google is constantly updating their platform and optimizing for the consumer, not the advertiser.
Google cares about pleasing consumers, and advertisers will need to adopt this strategy ASAP to remain relevant.
Omnichannel experiences are starting to crop up from Google Ads to Facebook Ads.
Google is continually putting stock into mobile development, too. No longer are the days of sub-par mobile ads for a quick call.
Now, mobile should be the center of your PPC strategy.
It’s time to get moving on your 2019 strategy and plan for these trends in advance.

[ficlet] #7 Altonian Distractions (Jack/Julian, Jadzia)
So going off this post I decided to go ahead with the next drabble/ficlet series.
Check the tag “the new jj frontier” for all of these. I’m aiming to go strictly chronologically and will add links to all the parts so it’s easier to keep track and reread or catch up. #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6
Summary: Jack and Julian grew up together in the Institute, fell in love, and got married. As part of an experimental program Julian [a success story!] was allowed to join Starfleet and was assigned as CMO of Deep Space Nine as a test run along with his husband Jack (who’s still struggling to find his place). This is their story.
In this installment, Julian encounters Jadzia in the holosuites while looking for Jack
Pairing: Jack/Julian though there will be G/B/J in some fashion
Warnings: nothing major for this part but a minor warning for ableism on Julian’s part which will be heavier in some parts and a note that they do have a semi open relationship with Jack being gray ace
Notes: In addition to retelling the series, I also wanted to explore Jack and Julian’s relationship as it changes. I like seeing how old expectations and habits can grow stronger through change and conflict. Jack in this story does still have a lot more issues than Julian, and I wanted to explore Jack coming into his own more as an individual instead of just the “Julian’s husband”/dependent role where he starts.
He doesn’t know why he thought he’d find Jack in the Holosuites when that would mean going through the Crowds as Julian is used to him saying while making a face and biting a finger. But he doesn’t find him, instead seeing the lovely Jadzia Dax sitting there silently in concentration with a fascinating array of lights. No, definitely not Jack (and despite Jack saying that he didn’t think Julian had a chance), Julian can’t help a bit of a wistful stare. It’s what Jack would call a Bad idea to get involved with her or anyone else right now as much as Julian has felt that… itch. Jack hasn’t given him any indication since they’ve settled in of any of his periodic “heats” as Julian calls them, and Jack says that it doesn’t matter and that he doesn’t understand why he has to be aroused for them to be intimate but…
             “Do you need me, Julian?”
He nearly jumps, Jadzia’s mellifluous voice interrupting those thoughts. God, she’s beautiful but Julian is sure that Jack is having trouble adjusting as little as he’s seen him lately and so he’s been trying to put Jack as the center of his focus. Jack says that he isn’t having problems and that he’s Busy, and Julian would be hard pressed to find a time when Jack has ever lied to him. Jack will either tell him with a huff or a snap that it’s none of his business but he’d never actually lie about it… right? Ah, there go his thoughts again! A beautiful woman in front of him and all he can do is worry about his husband. Julian sighs. Maybe they should’ve asked for someone to come along for support after all.
“Sorry no, I was looking for Jack. You haven’t seen him, have you?”
“I’m afraid not, but I’m sure he’s fine. He’s been helping with a lot of the construction projects and I think he might have been talking to Mrs O’Brien earlier… I don’t think Chief O’Brien took too well to that,” she adds with a mischievous smile “I think he might’ve said something about the both of you being two genetically engineered predators during the last discussion I saw in Quark’s”. Oh God, that means that bit of gossip had gotten around the station then. Julian groans.
“I wasn’t coming on to him,” he says into his hands miserably. It was nothing but a misunderstanding when the Chief had marveled that he and Julian had been married nearly ten years at such a young age without “playing the field” and Julian might have stupidly answered honestly that they weren’t sexually exclusive.
He absolutely did not say it with a come hither smirk and a waggle of his eyebrows the way Jack relayed to him later when they were eating dinner.
“Not your type?” she offers with such a lovely smile, surely Jack could’ve been mistaken about her level of interest? Ah, right, Jack.
“Not exactly,” Julian says with a sigh and then finds himself curious about the program. When Jadzia explains that it’s a puzzle that responds to theta waves that she’s been working on the last hundred and forty years he immediately think that he needs to show it to Jack. “He loves puzzles,” Julian explains with a wistful smile as he returns to the puzzle of his husband’s whereabouts. He’s almost afraid that Jack has created an entire secondary network of secret tunnels around the station that’s waiting to be discovered. He’d created an “invisibility cloak” the first year they were at The Academy so he could walk around shift phases, avoiding people and-
“I know you’re worried about him, Julian, but they wouldn’t have let you both come here if you weren’t ready.”
“It’s just that… Jack has… issues,” Julian says, having given the same circumspect speech at least several dozen times since their arrival.
“And Chief O’Brien has already made the adjustments to the light spectrum and I’m sure I saw Jack wearing the inserts which filter out a lot of the machine noise.”
“I know I know but it’s more than lights and noise it’s a lot of sensory things, processing things and he pushes himself and he gets... excitable and-”
“You know what I think would help you relax?” Jadzia says suddenly. “I’m going to release it to you. If anything will help a busy mind, it’s meditation.”
“I know how to meditate,” Julian protests as she goes to leave.
“Then you shouldn’t have any problems, should you?”
“I-” Well, what can he really say to that and maybe… maybe he is worrying too much but-
“Good. Computer, transfer control to second player.” Julian doesn’t know why but he holds his breath and the thing shatters in an instant. He sees her raise an eyebrow and sighs. Alright, so perhaps he could use the time to center himself and settle. “I need to meet the Commander but if I see Jack, I promise, I’ll let you no your looking for him.”
He manages a weak smile as she leaves, thinking maybe he does just need to get back on his game.
 “Computer. Reset.”

How to Train Clients Who Have Back Pain
You’ve heard that 80 percent of adults will experience back pain in their lives. Chances are, you’ll work with some of them. While few trainers are qualified to diagnose or treat back problems, every trainer can make it better by developing their clients’ core stability.
In fact, this is the first thing I tell those clients: Stop stretching your lower back.
Stretching aids mobility, and if the pain is rooted in instability—abnormal movement between the vertebrae—then moving the area more is not going to help.
For that, you need safe, low-intensity exercises to improve three aspects of core stability:
Lumbar-spine positional awareness
Motor control
Glute strength
At best, you’ll help ease your client’s low-back pain, and at worst, you’ll do no harm.
READ ALSO: Seven Myths About Low-Back Pain
1. Lumbar-spine positional awareness
The strategy: Find a neutral spine
Poor posture is linked to back pain. So it makes sense that poor posture awareness is as well. You have to be aware of problematic patterns before you can fix them.
The trick is to encourage your client to focus on what he’s feeling. Because you can’t see your low back during exercise, you have to feel what’s happening back there instead.
That learning process is best done while lying on the floor or a treatment table. This provides support and allows for instant tactile feedback from the low back and hips.
The following sequence is designed to help your client find a neutral spine position. As you walk your client through it, be sure to check in with him to see if the pain is the same, better, or worse.
Your cues:
“Using your hips, arch your back up away from the floor.” If your client looks at you like you just asked him to solve for X, tell him to arch his back enough for you to slide a hand underneath.
“How does your back feel?”
“Now press your low back flat against the floor.” If you actually did slide your hand under his low back—I often do—you can cue him to squish your hand.
“How does your back feel?”
“Now arch your back slightly, and brace your abs like I’m going to punch you in the stomach. Don’t hold your breath, just brace for a punch.” (At this point, I like to haul back and give the client a threatening look. It’s one of the little jokes that helps me through a long day of training.)
Typically, a neutral spine eliminates or significantly reduces the pain and, in my experience, gives the client hope that pain management is possible. Most people find that a flatter back position (posterior pelvic tilt) feels better. But keep in mind that a neutral spine may look a bit different for each person.
CRITICAL DETAIL: Have your client focus on being deliberate with the movements. If your client is distracted and going through the motions without intention, he’s wasting his time (and yours). But if your client is deliberate, he stands to benefit greatly.
READ ALSO: How to Train Around Five Common Causes of Pain
2. Motor control
The strategy: Perform core-stability moves
Core stabilization gets at the root of the problem for most types of back pain. After all, the abdominals’ primary job is to stabilize the lower back. So let that be your focus during the three movements shown in the video below.
All three moves are done lying on the floor, starting from a neutral spine position. When setting this position, make sure the ankles, knees, and hips are aligned. Placing the feet too close or too wide can promote movement in the low back. Remember, when the hips move, so does the low back.
youtube
Bracing and marching
Move slowly and deliberately. Cue your client to focus on the brace, especially when switching legs.
Don’t march too high. The core will be challenged as soon as the foot leaves the ground, and marching too high may alter the low-back position.
Keep a neutral spine throughout. If your client loses the neutral position, have her stop and reset. Don’t let her keep marching while you check Instagram.
Bracing with arms overhead
Don’t arch the back. If your client can’t touch her hands to the floor without arching her back, have her go as low as she can without arching.
Don’t let the hips rock. This means that the client isn’t stabilizing properly. Cue her to focus on the brace.
Bracing with alternating flies
Don’t let the hips rock. Again, this means the client isn’t stabilizing. Have her brace hard to keep her hips still during the upper-body movement.
Press shoulder blades into the floor. As each arm moves out to the side, make sure the opposite shoulder blade stays down. The goal is core stabilization, not shoulder range of motion.
CRITICAL DETAIL: Keep sets shorter and more frequent. (Think 10 sets of three, not three sets of 10.) This is how you improve motor control. Your client may be inclined to get into a groove and just keep going. Discourage this. Limit reps to five, max, and after each set, have the client stop and rest for a few seconds. Then walk her through the sequence of finding a neutral spine before beginning the move again.

3. Glute strength
The strategy: Start with the bridge
People with low-back pain often have weak glutes. To shore up those muscles, I like to start with the glute bridge. The classic move is not only a useful assessment tool but also a low-risk way to teach glute engagement while training core stability.
But there is one catch: Teaching the bridge to clients with low-back pain often triggers the pain, at least initially. That’s because they tend to lose their neutral position as soon as they raise the hips.
Here’s how I explain it to my clients:
“When you’re lying down, your body is supported by the ground. Most of your muscles are relaxed. If you struggle to maintain your neutral spine when you’re lying down, you have zero chance of doing it when you’re sitting, standing, walking, bending, twisting, or lifting.”
This helps illustrate how critical these exercises are, not just in the gym, but in all aspects of your life.
READ ALSO: Don’t Let Your Clients Butcher These Three Exercises
When setting up the bridge, don’t neglect any details. They all matter. For a quick video tutorial, click here.
Get the client into a hook-lying position (a fancy name for the bridge’s starting position): lying down with the knees bent and feet flat on the floor.
Make sure the ankles, knees, and hips are aligned.
Walk your client through the sequence of finding a neutral spine position. The final step—the ab brace—is vital. It helps the client maintain a neutral spine throughout the move.
Press the heels into the floor and squeeze the glutes. At this point, that might be all the client can do. If that’s the case, you’ll simply have the client alternate squeezing and relaxing the glutes while keeping the abs braced.
If the client is able to move even partway through the bridge without pain, instruct him to move only through pain-free motion. Stop just short of pain, even if that’s barely high enough to slide a piece of paper underneath.
On the lowering phase, the glutes can relax briefly, but the abs must stay tight. The only reason to relax the abs is to restart the neutral-spine sequence, not a bad idea from time to time.
A common mistake: Many people will push through their toes instead of their heels, engaging the quads more and causing horizontal movement. To fix this, you can slide a foam roller under the upper back. (Check out this video for setup and execution.) If the client pushes with his toes, the roller will move. Just keep in mind this does allow for a slightly greater range of motion.
CRITICAL DETAIL: Manage fatigue. It’s not uncommon for my clients to do just two or three sets of three reps. That may sound absurd, but when the goal is pain-free movement, quality-over-quantity is the best approach. You may need to be the voice of reason. A motivated client is great at hard work, but not restraint. Your job in these cases isn’t to push your client but to slow him down.

Final thoughts
Treating lower-back pain is a bear. It doesn’t resolve quickly, and anyone who says otherwise is lying to you or someone you know.
The strategies above may take weeks or months to resolve the issue. But in the meantime, if done properly, they’re unlikely to increase the pain.
However, if you don’t feel comfortable trying them, then don’t. Refer out. Build your network and reach out to physical therapists or other clinicians in your area.
Years ago, anytime I had a client referral from a physical therapist, I would call the therapist and ask questions. The clients loved it. It made them feel as if they were being taken care of. And more important, they were.

How To Fix Windows Errors Code 43 ?
The Code 43 error is one of several Device Manager error codes. It's generated when Device Manager stops a hardware device because the hardware reported to Windows that it's having some kind of unspecified problem.
This extremely generic message could mean there's a true hardware issue or it could simply mean that there's a driver problem that Windows isn't seeing as such but that the hardware is being affected by.
It will almost always display in the following way:
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
Details on Device Manager error codes like Code 43 are available in the Device Status area in the device's properties. See How to View a Device's Status in Device Manager for help.
Device Manager error codes are exclusive to Device Manager. If you see the Code 43 error elsewhere in Windows, chances are it's a system error code, which you should not troubleshoot as a Device Manager issue.
The Code 43 error could apply to any hardware device in Device Manager, though most Code 43 errors appear on video cards and USB devices like printers, webcams, iPhones/iPods, etc.
Any of Microsoft's operating systems could experience a Code 43 Device Manager error including Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and more.
How To Fix A Code 43 Error
Restart your computer if you haven't done so already.
There is always the chance that the error Code 43 you're seeing on a device was caused by some temporary problem with the hardware. If so, a restart of your computer might fix the Code 43 error.
Some users have also reported that powering off their computer completely (not just a reset) and then turning it back on has corrected their Code 43 issue, especially if it exists on a USBdevice. In the case of a laptop, turn it off and remove the battery, wait a few minutes, and then put the battery back in and start the computer.
Did you install a device or make a change in Device Manager just before the Code 43 error appeared? If so, it's possible that the change you made caused the Code 43 error. Undo the change if you can, restart your PC, and then check again for the Code 43 error.
Depending on the changes you made, some solutions might include: Removing or reconfiguring the newly installed device.
Rolling back the driver to a version prior to your update
Using System Restore to undo recent Device Manager related changes
Reinstall the drivers for the device. Uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers for the device is a possible solution to a Code 43 error.
If a USB device is generating the Code 43 error, uninstall every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers hardware category in Device Manager as part of the driver reinstall. This includes any USB Mass Storage Device, USB Host Controller, and USB Root Hub.
Properly reinstalling a driver, as in the instructions linked above, is not the same as simply updating a driver. A full driver reinstall involves completely removing the currently installed driver and then letting Windows install it over again from scratch.
Update the drivers for the device. It's also very possible that installing the latest drivers for the device could correct the Code 43 error.
If updating the drivers does remove the Code 43 error, it means that the stored Windows drivers you reinstalled in Step 3 were probably damaged or were the wrong drivers.
Install the latest Windows service pack. One of Microsoft's service packs or other patches for Windows might contain a fix for whatever might be causing the Code 43 error, so if you're not fully updated, do so now.
Update BIOS. In some situations, an outdated BIOS could be causing a specific issue with a device that's making it report an issue to Windows - thus the Code 43 error.
Replace the data cable that connects the device to the computer, assuming it has one. This potential fix for a Code 43 error is most often useful if you're seeing the error on an external device like a USB or FireWire device.
Reference the hardware device's manual and follow any troubleshooting information provided.
I know this sounds like really general advice but the Code 43 error is specifically referring to the hardware as the source of the error information, so there may actually be some useful troubleshooting information in the product manual.
Purchase a powered USB hub if the Code 43 error is showing up for a USB device. Some USB devices need more power than the USB ports that are built into your computer can provide. Plugging those devices into a powered USB hub solves that issue.
Replace the hardware. A problem with the device itself might be causing the Code 43 error, in which case replacing the hardware is your next logical step. In most cases, this is the solution to a Code 43 error but I wanted you to try the easier, and free, software-based troubleshooting ideas first.
Another possibility, while not very likely, is that the device is incompatible with your version of Windows. You can always check the Windows HCL to be sure.
If you're positive that a hardware problem isn't causing the Code 43 error, you could try a repair install of Windows. If that doesn't work, try a clean install of Windows. I don't recommend doing either before you replace the hardware, but you may have to give them a try if you're out of other options.
Please let me know if you've fixed a Code 43 error using a method that I don't have above. I'd like to keep this page as accurate as possible.

Simply put, it's a scam. Cognivex Clarity brain enhancement formula may even be a hoax. Unfortunately, many consumers have confused our product, Thrivous Clarity, with one of several variations of Cognivex Clarity — which appears also to use the labels "CortyX Clarity," "Clarity X," and "Apollo Mental Clarity." This presents risk to the Thrivous brand, associating it with the poor business practices of a shady company (or network). And the problem is getting worse.
A few weeks ago, I published a warning about the CortyX Clarity variation of their product. At the time, there seems to have been a major advertising push for that variation. Google searches for it were skyrocketing. Then at about the time that my warning went live, perhaps only coincidentally or maybe consequently, the searches evaporated.
But that wasn't the end. While the searches for one variation declined, searches for the Cognivex Clarity variation began to increase rapidly. And now, a few weeks later, searches for the new variation are taking off. Another major advertising push has probably begun. Check out this chart from Google Trends, which shows CortyX Clarity searches (in blue) being replaced by Cognivex Clarity searches (in red).
Is Cognivex Clarity for Sale?
Strangely, despite the advertising push, it's not easy to figure out how to buy Cognivex Clarity. When searching for the product via Google, I got one Cognivex review after another, consisting mostly of negative verdicts from real reviewers and positive verdicts from the dark hordes of fake supplement review websites (another topic for another time).
What I didn't get was a website directly offering to sell Cognivex Clarity. But among the search results there were at least a couple websites that promote the product and provide links that purport to take you to an online store. Here's a picture of one of them:
What happens if you click on that "Rush My Trial" button? Well, It takes you to a website that sells IntelligenceRx Cognitive Support. Here's a picture:
On the IntelligenceRx website, I found no mention of Cognivex Clarity at all. And when I submitted order info, the website returned an error message. So, at first, that made me wonder if Cognivex is just a fictional product that someone is using to generate sales leads for other products.
However, just this morning I received (yet another) phone call from a confused person who had received an unwanted bottle of Cognivex Clarity in the mail and asked to stop it. The person actually had a bottle in hand. And I know this because I asked her to read information from it to me. She even described the Cognivex logo on the bottle. So based on that, I imagined that someone must be at least selling the product via telephone, perhaps sharing the Cognivex phone number in TV or radio ads that people can't easily find later.
When I saw the Cognivex promotional website, it was immediately familiar. That's because it uses the same template as one of the websites that promotes CortyX Clarity. And they both include pictures of the same fake reviewers that I mentioned in my review of CortyX. Here's a picture:
I also recognized the IntelligenceRx sales website. It uses the same template as an old version of the CortyX Clarity sales website. And it probably won't come as a surprise that both websites use similar manipulative sales tactics -- so hurry, because they're almost out of stock, like they have been and will be every day. Here's a picture:
As you can see from the pictures, the Cognivex Clarity, CortyX Clarity, and IntelligenceRx websites are strikingly similar in design and message. It's probable that they were planned and implemented by the same persons or teams, or at least by a network of persons and teams that share strategies and templates.
As it turns out, their relationship with each other is not flattering for any of them. In my review of CortyX Clarity, I already pointed out the poor reputation of the businesses that appear to be behind the brand. And although this new Cognivex Clarity label hasn't been around as long, it has also already begun to generate a negative reputation. For example, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) opened a file on Cognivex Booster in July and gave the company an "F" rating.
That's where I found the last clue I needed to figure out the location of the main Cognivex website. The BBB file includes an address of 5710 Ogeechee Rd, Suite 200-215, Savannah GA 31405. I searched Google for that address and found a website that listed the Cognivex Clarity phone number as 888 906 1190 and the email address as [email protected]. And guess what happens if you go to cognivexbooster.com?
Yes. Although it's hard to find (which seems to undermine the efficacy of their new advertising push), Cognivex Clarity is for sale online -- at least, it would be if the website worked, which it did not for me. Here's a picture of their online store:
Look familiar? If you've visited the CortyX Clarity website before, it might. As I mentioned above, there's more than one version of the CortyX website. Here's another version, which is (not surprisingly at this point) strikingly similar to the Cognivex website:
Cognivex Clarity Is NOT the Clarity You Want
You're probably already convinced that Cognivex Clarity is NOT the Clarity you want. But I'll rehearse the reasons. They'll be familiar to anyone who read my review of CortyX Clarity. I'll summarize them in 6 points.
First, Cognivex uses manipulative marketing tactics. For example, there are count-down timers that endlessly reset. There are logos of news websites that almost certainly have never mentioned the product in any flattering way. And there are wildly exaggerated benefit claims (such as "instant super computer mental ability").
Second, the Cognivex Clarity supplement facts aren't easy to find. They don't appear to be available on the Internet, let alone on the Cognivex website. No one should buy a supplement that makes it hard to find the supplement facts, which are required by the FDA. But I wager, even if we could find the supplement facts, that they would claim a proprietary blend that hides the doses of whatever ingredients Cognivex might claim. After all, that's what CortyX does. And I also wager that the ingredients would be dosed at ineffective levels, again like CortyX ingredients. But unfortunately I can't confirm any of this because Cognivex makes this information hard to find -- or altogether hides it.
Third, there's no apparent way to know whether and how Cognivex is testing the quality of its product. We don't know the Cognivex Clarity ingredients. And we don't even know that Cognivex knows the ingredients. Who are their suppliers? Did they run tests to confirm the claims of their suppliers? Do they have any evidence that we should trust the identity or potency of their ingredient claims? What about any reason to trust that they have tested for microbes or heavy metals? I don't know. And nothing on their website helps me know. So I wouldn't put Cognivex Clarity pills in my mouth.
Fourth, the product reviews for Cognivex Clarity are almost certainly fake. They use the same pictures and the same text that appear in the testimonial section of a CortyX Clarity website, as well as a number of other shady brain supplement websites. I'm pretty sure neither John D nor Jane M has ever tried Cognivex Clarity. But even if they have, I wouldn't trust either of them any more than I trust any of the many scams they're trying to push on me.
Fifth, Cognivex may be obfuscating a track record of poor business practices. There's a striking resemblance between the strategy and presentation of Cognivex and CortyX. Somehow these brands are related. They're either the same company, or they're working together, or one is ripping off the other. None of those cases is flattering. If they're the same company or working together then all the negative BBB reviews associated with CortyX (as mentioned in my other article) would be relevant. And if Cognivex is ripping off CortyX then why should we trust them not to rip us off? Either way, it looks bad.
Sixth, the Cognivex Clarity price is a total rip off. Although I couldn't find a way to make the online store work, I did find the product price on their "Terms and Conditions" webpage. It explains that their "trial" isn't free. They immediately charge $5.94 for shipping the trial product. Then they charge $84 for the trial product if the customer hasn't canceled within 14 days. At that time, they also enroll the customer in a product subscription that renews each 45 days for $89.94. Are the 30 pills in a Cognivex Clarity bottle likely to be worth anything close to $3 each? Not for anyone I know. It's an extraordinarily high price, and it's charged in a far-less-than-transparent way. So far as I'm concerned, that's the definition of a scam.
Thrivous Clarity IS the Clarity You Want
Compare all of that with Thrivous Clarity. We charge only $21 per bottle of 60 capsules ($28 without a subscription). That's as low as 35 cents per capsule. Each serving of 2 capsules contains nutrients and doses that have demonstrated nootropic efficacy in multiple peer-reviewed, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical studies on humans. Both the nutrients and the doses are fully disclosed in our supplement facts, which are prominently displayed on our website. All of our supplier, manufacturing, and third-party quality control test results are also shared prominently from the product webpage. And the studies on which our formula is based are also shared prominently from the product webpage. To top things off, the BBB currently gives Thrivous an "A" rating.
You probably found your way here because you're looking for Clarity. Don't be fooled by the fakes. Thrivous is the Clarity you want.

Mobile Giants: Please Don’t Share the Where
Your mobile phone is giving away your approximate location all day long. This isn’t exactly a secret: It has to share this data with your mobile provider constantly to provide better call quality and to route any emergency 911 calls straight to your location. But now, the major mobile providers in the United States — AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon — are selling this location information to third party companies — in real time — without your consent or a court order, and with apparently zero accountability for how this data will be used, stored, shared or protected.
Think about what’s at stake in a world where anyone can track your location at any time and in real-time. Right now, to be free of constant tracking the only thing you can do is remove the SIM card from your mobile device never put it back in unless you want people to know where you are.
It may be tough to put a price on one’s location privacy, but here’s something of which you can be sure: The mobile carriers are selling data about where you are at any time, without your consent, to third-parties for probably far less than you might be willing to pay to secure it.
The problem is that as long as anyone but the phone companies and law enforcement agencies with a valid court order can access this data, it is always going to be at extremely high risk of being hacked, stolen and misused.
Consider just two recent examples. Earlier this month The New York Times reported that a little-known data broker named Securus was selling local police forces around the country the ability to look up the precise location of any cell phone across all of the major U.S. mobile networks. Then it emerged that Securus had been hacked, its database of hundreds of law enforcement officer usernames and passwords plundered. We also found out that Securus’ data was ultimately obtained from a California-based location tracking firm LocationSmart.
On May 17, KrebsOnSecurity broke the news of research by Carnegie Mellon University PhD student Robert Xiao, who discovered that a LocastionSmart try-before-you-buy opt-in demo of the company’s technology was wide open — allowing real-time lookups from anyone on anyone’s mobile device — without any sort of authentication, consent or authorization.
Xiao said it took him all of about 15 minutes to discover that LocationSmart’s lookup tool could be used to track the location of virtually any mobile phone user in the United States.
Securus seems equally clueless about protecting the priceless data to which it was entrusted by LocationSmart. Over the weekend KrebsOnSecurity discovered that someone — almost certainly a security professional employed by Securus — has been uploading dozens of emails, PDFs, password lists and other files to Virustotal.com — a service owned by Google that can be used to scan any submitted file against dozens of commercial antivirus tools.
Antivirus companies willingly participate in Virustotal because it gives them early access to new, potentially malicious files being spewed by cybercriminals online. Virustotal users can submit suspicious files of all kind; in return they’ll see whether any of the 60+ antivirus tools think the file is bad or benign.
One basic rule that all Virustotal users need to understand is that any file submitted to Virustotal is also available to customers who purchase access to the service’s file repository. Nevertheless, for the past two years someone at Securus has been submitting a great deal of information about the company’s operations to Virustotal, including copies of internal emails and PDFs about visitation policies at a number of local and state prisons and jails that made up much of Securus’ business.
Some of the many, many files uploaded to Virustotal.com over the years by someone at Securus Technologies.
One of the files, submitted on April 27, 2018, is titled “38k user pass microsemi.com – joomla_production.mic_users_blockedData.txt”.  This file includes the names and what appear to be hashed/scrambled passwords of some 38,000 accounts — supposedly taken from Microsemi, a company that’s been called the largest U.S. commercial supplier of military and aerospace semiconductor equipment.
Many of the usernames in that file do map back to names of current and former employees at Microsemi. KrebsOnSecurity shared a copy of the database with Microsemi, but has not yet received a reply. Securus also has not responded to requests for comment.
These files that someone at Securus apparently submitted regularly to Virustotal also provide something of an internal roadmap of Securus’ business dealings, revealing the names and login pages for several police departments and jails across the country, such as the Travis County Jail site’s Web page to access Securus’ data.
Check out the screen shot below. Notice that forgot password link there? Clicking that prompts the visitor to enter their username and to select a “security question” to answer. There are but three questions: “What is your pet’s name? What is your favorite color? And what town were you born in?” There don’t appear to be any limits on the number of times one can attempt to answer a secret question.
Choose wisely and you, too, could gain the ability to look up anyone’s precise mobile location.
Given such robust, state-of-the-art security, how long do you think it would take for someone to figure out how to reset the password for any authorized user at Securus’ Travis County Jail portal?
Yes, companies like Securus and Location Smart have been careless with securing our prized location data, but why should they care if their paying customers are happy and the real-time data feeds from the mobile industry keep flowing?
No, the real blame for this sorry state of affairs comes down to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon. T-Mobile was the only one of the four major providers that admitted providing Securus and LocationSmart with the ability to perform real-time location lookups on their customers. The other three carriers declined to confirm or deny that they did business with either company.
As noted in my story last Thursday, LocationSmart included the logos of the four carriers on their home page — in addition to those of several other major firms (that information is no longer available on the company’s site, but it can still be viewed by visiting this historic record of it over at the Internet Archive).
Now, don’t think for a second that these two tiny companies are the only ones with permission from the mobile giants to look up such sensitive information on demand. At a minimum, each one of these companies can in theory resell (or leak) this information and access to others. On 15 May, ZDNet reported that Securus was getting its data from the carriers by going through an intermediary: 3Cinteractive, which was getting it from LocationSmart.
However, it is interesting that the first insight we got that the mobile firms were being so promiscuous with our private location data came in the Times story about law enforcement officials seeking the ability to access any mobile device’s location data in real time.
All technologies are double-edged swords, which means that each can be used both for good and malicious ends. As much as police officers may wish to avoid the hassle and time constraints of having to get a warrant to determine the precise location of anyone they please whenever they wish, those same law enforcement officers should remember that this technology works both ways: It also can just as easily be abused by criminals to track the real-time movements of police and their families, informants, jurors, witnesses and even judges.
Consider the damage that organized crime syndicates — human traffickers, drug smugglers and money launderers — could inflict armed with an app that displays the precise location of every uniformed officer from within 300 ft to across the country. All because they just happened to know the cell phone number tied to each law enforcement official.
Maybe you have children or grandchildren who — like many of their peers these days — carry a mobile device at all times for safety and for quick communication with parents or guardians. Now imagine that anyone in the world has the instant capability to track where your kid is at any time of day. All they’d need is your kid’s digits.
Maybe you’re the current or former target of a stalker, jilted ex-spouse, or vengeful co-worker. Perhaps you perform sensitive work for the government. All of the above-mentioned parties and many more are put at heightened personal risk by having their real-time location data exposed to commercial third parties.
Some people might never sell their location data for any price: I suspect most of us would like this information always to be private unless and until we change the defaults (either in a binary “on/off” way or app-specific). On the other end of the spectrum there are probably plenty of people who don’t care one way or another provided that sharing their location information brings them some real or perceived financial or commercial benefit.
The point is, for many of us location privacy is priceless because, without it, almost everything else we’re doing to safeguard our privacy goes out the window.
And this sad reality will persist until the mobile providers state unequivocally that they will no longer sell or share customer location data without having received and validated some kind of legal obligation — such as a court-ordered subpoena.
But even that won’t be enough, because companies can and do change their policies all the time without warning or recourse (witness the current reality). It won’t be enough until lawmakers in this Congress step up and do their jobs — to prevent the mobile providers from selling our last remaining bastion of privacy in the free world to third party companies who simply can’t or won’t keep it secure.
The next post in this series will examine how we got here, and what Congress and federal regulators have done and might do to rectify the situation.

While much of the tech industry has grown bearish on the volatility of cryptocurrencies, enthusiasm for its underlying technology remains at an all-time high. Nowadays we see -blockchain" cropping up with impressive frequency in even the most unlikely startup pitches. And while blockchain technology does have genuinely interesting and potentially powerful use cases, it has enormous drawbacks for consumer applications that get little mention in media coverage.
My background is developing virtual worlds similar to Second Life - MMOs where users create, build, and usually sell their virtual wares to other users. In principle, blockchain should be my holy grail, enabling user-to-user micropayments without a middleman. But it's not that now, and it probably won't be for a long time. Here's why:
Blockchain cannot be everything it aspires to be at the same time
As it stands, blockchain is caught between three competing objectives: fast, low-cost, and decentralized. It is not yet possible to make one chain that achieves all three. Fast and decentralized chains will incur a high cost because the storage and bandwidth requirements for historical archiving will be enormous and will bloat even with pruning. Aim for fast and low-cost, and you'll have to introduce a bank-like authority (-Tangles" are a proposed solution, but not yet fully understood).
At high volume, a good credit card processor can settle a typical $2 transaction for somewhere around $0.10. Some of the largest online game economies manage more than a million user-to-user transactions per day, instantaneously, with no fees. And yet, I can name half a dozen startups trying to inject an expensive and slow blockchain into this very problem.
Blockchain is a customer support nightmare
For most consumers, losing a password to an online service is a mild inconvenience they've grown accustomed to, since typically, it's quickly fixed by requesting an email reset, say, or talking with customer service.
Blockchain wallets and their passwords, by contrast, are tied to a file on a user's hard disk and are absolutely critical to users trying to access the blockchain. By their very nature they have no recovery mechanism. -You lose your password, you lose everything" is an awful user experience for mainstream consumers and a nightmare for companies attempting to build their service on a blockchain. If you use a hosted service, the risk of theft or sudden loss of assets is very real, with central targets and limited traceability.
Let's say you're trying to run an online game or other consumer service where purchases are made on the blockchain. How do you handle refund requests? How do you even verify a loss? How do you handle theft or purchases financed with stolen cards? A company could, of course, create a blockchain master override with a recovery protocol, but that would totally defeat the purpose of using a system that's supposed to be decentralized.
Which takes me to another problem:
Blockchain adds frictions to an already seamless process
Nothing about blockchain applications is easy for consumers right now. Everyday users accustomed to making digital and online payments would have to be trained to make blockchain purchases, learning to apply the right mix of paranoia and caveat emptor to prevent theft or buying from shady dealers. Irreversible pseudonymous transactions do not lend themselves well to trust and integrity.
Compounding this is the speed and the transaction fees involved. Most public chains have settlements measured in minutes - unless you're willing to pay high transaction fees. Compare that to the 2-10 seconds for a saved credit card transaction customers are accustomed to in the age of fast mobile interfaces and instant gratification.
Privately operated chains have the potential for custom mixes of settlement times and fees - but all will be subject to the competing objectives described above. If developers lean too far one way or another, they open themselves up to everything from denial of service attacks to having storage and bandwidth problems.
Consider the recent CryptoKitties fad. It's a fantastic case study of where things can start to go wrong when you put consumer activities into a blockchain. It congested the Ethereum network almost single handedly, and the company had to raise transaction costs significantly to overcome the resulting lag. This whole activity was only a fraction of the size of many medium-sized online consumer services, let alone the truly big ones.
These points only scratch the surface of what it'll truly take to make blockchain ready for a mass market. Assuming we reach the point where millions of people are using blockchain-based services every day, businesses will face ever-expanding storage requirements to maintain and access the chain for auditing purposes. Ethereum's blockchain is growing by well over 50 gigabytes a year now, a size that's already too massive for immediate access - and it's destined to keep growing.
As I said at the start, none of this is meant to suggest blockchain isn't a worthwhile technology. And there are some early attempts underway to address the problems I've raised. But to become truly viable, blockchain tech is going to need fundamental improvements that require thousands of minor changes - or, perhaps, a radical rethink of the key ideas.
A good starting point is to honestly reappraise what problems blockchain can solve - and to look at whether those problems could be addressed in much more practical, proven ways. Many blockchain enthusiasts were first excited by the idea of cryptocurrency after reading about it in Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon. But there's a big difference between how inspiring it might have appeared in a great science fiction novel versus how it works in actual practice. After all, Second Life was originally inspired by the Metaverse from Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash. But having handled hundreds of Linden Dollar payments and issues from hordes of excitable furries, I can assure you that doing business in an actual Metaverse also didn't quite turn out the way we imagined.

Consider the recent CryptoKitties fad. It’s a fantastic case study of where things can start to go wrong when you put consumer activities into a blockchain. It congested the Ethereum network almost single handedly, and the company had to raise transaction costs significantly to overcome the resulting lag. This whole activity was only a fraction of the size of many medium-sized online consumer services, let alone the truly big ones.
These points only scratch the surface of what it’ll truly take to make blockchain ready for a mass market. Assuming we reach the point where millions of people are using blockchain-based services every day, businesses will face ever-expanding storage requirements to maintain and access the chain for auditing purposes. Ethereum’s blockchain is growing by well over 50 gigabytes a year now, a size that’s already too massive for immediate access — and it’s destined to keep growing.
As I said at the start, none of this is meant to suggest blockchain isn’t a worthwhile technology. And there are some early attempts underway to address the problems I’ve raised. But to become truly viable, blockchain tech is going to need fundamental improvements that require thousands of minor changes — or, perhaps, a radical rethink of the key ideas.
A good starting point is to honestly reappraise what problems blockchain can solve — and to look at whether those problems could be addressed in much more practical, proven ways. Many blockchain enthusiasts were first excited by the idea of cryptocurrency after reading about it in Neal Stephenson’s Cryptonomicon. But there’s a big difference between how inspiring it might have appeared in a great science fiction novel versus how it works in actual practice. After all, Second Life was originally inspired by the Metaverse from Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash. But having handled hundreds of Linden Dollar payments and issues from hordes of excitable furries, I can assure you that doing business in an actual Metaverse also didn’t quite turn out the way we imagined.

Is Keto for Everyone?—Cautions, Caveats, and Contraindications
In a few months, I’ll be releasing a book extolling the virtues of a ketogenic diet. I’m currently several months into a ketogenic experiment, which is going well. I just wrote a Definitive Guide explaining why you should consider going keto. I’m on record as stating that everyone should dip into ketosis from time to time. You’d think I’d recommend that everyone go keto. Right?
There are caveats. There are contraindications. There are very good reasons for a person not to go keto, or at least to take a few extra precautions. Today, I’m going to tell you when you should exercise particular care when considering a ketogenic diet.
If You Have Diabetes
In type 2 diabetes, the evidence is crystal clear: Ketogenic diets work, perhaps better than any other diet.
In obese diabetics, a ketogenic diet improved glycemic control to a greater degree than a low-calorie diet.
And just recently, a study came out showing that very-low carb ketogenic diet advice was more effective at spurring weight loss than conventional low-fat diet advice in type 2 diabetics.
However, the authors from the obese diabetic study recommend that diabetics going keto maintain medical supervision to avoid dropping blood sugar too low. Another typical feature of diabetic keto studies is regular and supervised adjustment of medication dosages. This makes sense. If your glucose control improves, the old dosage of the medicine designed to control your glucose might be excessive and counterproductive. Rather than eyeball it yourself, get an expert’s eye.
If You’re Pregnant
In one study, mother mice on ketogenic diets during pregnancy produced offspring with reduced growth in certain areas of the brain and increased growth in other areas. In another study, mice born to keto mothers were more resistant to anxiety and depression and more physically active than mice whose mothers ate standard diets. Maternal ketogenic diets have also been shown to negatively affect mouse fertility and slow the growth of the offspring.
Before you start slamming waxy maize in an attempt to knock yourself out of ketosis, there are some caveats to this particular caveat:
These were mice, of course. I trust you are not.
They were eating refined ketogenic chow made of oils and powders, rather than the whole foods-based ketogenic diets I recommend to humans.
They ate almost zero carbohydrates (just 0.7% of calories), which I’d never recommend to anyone, let alone a pregnant woman.
The keto chow fatty acid intakes were imbalanced, with far more PUFA than saturated fat.
This was an extreme diet designed to maximize ketosis. It had to be, because it’s harder for non-humans to slip into ketosis—which perhaps indicates ketosis is probably less safe for other animals than it is for humans.
Still, it gives me pause. As a pregnant woman building a human, you’ll need all the nutrients at your disposal. You don’t want to restrict anything nutritious. It’s no time to be experimenting.
If You’re Breastfeeding
Remember that little metabolite known as oxaloacetate—the protein- or carb-derived bit necessary for finishing the Krebs’ cycle and producing ATP from fat and glucose? The one where if we don’t have enough, we start making ketones? Lactating women also use it to produce lactose, the milk sugar that provides much of the nursing baby’s energy needs. That means that lactating women can eat more carbs and protein and still remain in ketosis. It also means that eating a strict ketogenic diet extremely low in carbs and protein is likely to impair milk production.
There isn’t much research, and many women report remaining ketogenic while nursing without issue, but there are a few case studies of breastfeeding women suffering lactation ketoacidosis, a dangerous condition where chronically low insulin prevents the cells from accessing blood glucose and promotes unchecked ketone production. Triggers of lactation ketoacidosis have included starvation (don’t starve yourself, or even fast, and breastfeed), twin lactation (feeding two increases the amount of lactation substrate you need to consume), and a low-calorie/low-carb/high-fat diet (bad combo).
If You’re a Competitive Athlete, and the Season’s about to Start
Becoming keto-adapted provides major benefits to athletic performance. But it doesn’t come instantly. You’re laying a foundation of dense, fat-burning mitochondria, and it takes time to put it all together. For those first 4-6 weeks, you’re in no man’s land. You’re not fully adapted to burning free fatty acids in the muscles. You’re pretty good at burning ketones, but you haven’t yet laid that dense network of fat-burning mitochondria that can really produce large amounts of energy in a short period of time on demand. The capacity for rapid energy generation just isn’t there. Glucose is still the most dependable source of high-octane fuel for intense efforts, and there’s very little of it coming in.
If you want an instant performance boost, now is not the time to begin a ketogenic diet.
If You Don’t Have a Gall Bladder
The gall bladder collects and concentrates bile, creating a “superbile” that it can unleash to digest dietary fat. Without a gall bladder, your liver still makes bile, but it’s not the super-concentrated stuff that makes short work of large amounts of fat.
Ketogenic diets tend to contain large amounts of dietary fat. You can still do keto without a gall bladder, but you’ll have to be careful. Favor shorter-chained fats, like the ones found in MCT oil and coconut, as those are easier to digest and require less bile.
If You Have a History of Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are relatively common in epileptic patients on ketogenic diets, occurring in almost 7% of subjects. This is caused by excessive urinary acidity (ketones are acidic), which increases uric acid and calcium calcium oxalate stone formation.
Luckily, potassium citrate alkalinizes the urine and prevents kidney stone formation on ketogenic diets. If you or your family has a history of kidney stones, include some potassium citrate in your ketogenic diet. A great source is lemon juice. A couple tablespoons of lemon juice, some sparkling mineral water, a dash of sea salt make for a refreshing drink. You know what? Even if you don’t have a history, still increase your potassium (leafy greens, avocado). There’s no good reason not to, and it may stave off any impending stones.
Make sure to drink water, too. Low water intake is another risk factor for kidney stone formation.
If You’re Still Growing
I don’t mean spiritually. I don’t mean “backpacking through Laos trying to find myself.” I mean: Your growth plates are open for business and you’re actively getting taller. If that describes you, a ketogenic diet may unnecessarily reduce your growth rate.
Some kids need to be on a ketogenic diet for medical purposes. But even in those cases, the diet arrests growth without reducing body weight or resting energy expenditure, probably by reducing insulin-like growth factor 1, or IGF-1. IGF-1 is extremely important in growing children and teens. It initiates the growth of bones and other tissues. The keto-induced reduction in IGF-1 has led some longevity enthusiasts to pursue keto to reduce unwanted growth (cancer) and aging. That’s fine for adults. But kids need to grow.
Other research has found that ketogenic diets don’t arrest growth in children. Still, I’d advise against taking the chance, unless you have a very good reason.
If You’re Lapsing into a Refined Food Ketogenic Diet
It’s easy to construct a ketogenic diet out of refined, isolated fats and products. A couple spoons of coconut butter here, a Bulletproof coffee there, a nibble of low-sugar dark chocolate, a coconut milk matcha latte spiked with MCT oil. Yeah, you’ll be in ketosis. Yeah, you’ll be hitting your fat requirements. But you’ll have eaten very little food in the process, and that’s a bad idea if you’re trying to lead a sustainable, healthy way of eating.
Look to the failings of the clinical epilepsy diets made of oils and multivitamins. They do a great job at staving off seizures, but they often leave patients undernourished and suffering from stunted growth, bone mineral density issues, and kidney stones.
Make sure whole foods comprise the base of your ketogenic diet.
Most of these aren’t absolute deal-breakers. There are workarounds and solutions. But it’s also proof that you don’t need to be ketogenic to be healthy.
Would I recommend ketosis for most people most of the time? No. Keto is a tool in your toolbox. I look at it as a way of resetting your metabolism once in a while to a point of greater metabolic flexibility. Some people choose to be in ketosis for years at a time. I prefer to go in and out from time to time, knowing that a few weeks in ketosis leaves my engine running smoother and more efficiently.
What about you, folks? If you’ve ever tried a ketogenic diet with these or other conditions, how did it work?
Thanks for reading. Take care.
