Out of all the issues Al Haitham has to deal with, Port Ormos is the most pressing and the source of many other problems.
No trade means no business. No business means no jobs. No jobs mean no work, which means no income for both Sumeru and the people. And especially since Port Ormos is Sumeru's main port, national income has taken a hard hit. Akademiya economists have been sending him report after report about their concerns about Sumeru's economic forecast. It does not look good.
In addition, no trade means that Sumeru doesn't get new resources anymore. While Sumeru is mostly self-sufficient food-wise, many resources still cannot be obtained locally- or are mostly imported. And since Port Ormos is both Sumeru's largest and main port, lots of imports are not coming in anymore.
For example, there's currently a national shortage of cold medicines, which Sumeru usually imports from Snezhnaya. Particularly during monsoon seasons, cases of colds, dengue fever and the flu increase amongst the population. But Snezhnayan traders and businesses have pulled away from Sumeru after the Akademiya scandal. Bimarstan had gotten so desperate for cold medicine that it had begun asking locals to donate their leftover medicine. To ease the burden on the Bimarstan, Al Haitham had ordered Amurta to help mass manufacture medicines. However, this is only a stopgap measure. He needs to find a way to solve the root cause of the problem.
Furthermore, inflation has been a growing issue. The situation isn't so bad in Sumeru city, as its tiny port is still running- albeit not as smoothly or vibrantly as it used to. But in other parts of Sumeru, it's a whole different story.
Everything is connected in a way. Just because Sumeru isn't reliant on imports for food doesn't mean food prices are not affected by the lack of other resources. For example, to produce fowl meat, you'll need a few things:
Either machinery (mostly from Fontaine) or workers to slaughter the fowl.
Appropriate packaging to pack the fowl meat.
Transport to carry your produce to marketplaces throughout Sumeru.
In this case, most issues lie with step one. Most farmers in Sumeru had taken to using Fontaine machinery to mass slaughter poultry. It was much cheaper than hiring workers and way more efficient. The only trade-off was that these machines ran on a specific type of oil that only is sold in Fontaine. So, manufacturers would sell the oil alongside it.
But now, Fontaine traders and businesses are gradually pulling away from Sumeru. That means a lesser supply of oil, which means a decrease in the supply of fowl since machines are not able or cost more to run. A shortage means that prices go up. People buy less or cannot afford fowl at all. Farmers make less money, which prevents them from hiring more workers (or results in them letting go of workers if they don't use machinery) to increase the fowl supply. A case of cost-push inflation, similar to other case studies Al Haitham has read up on.
This is just one example out of many. The inflation and unemployment rate are growing. Adding everything up, including the current political climate, Sumeru is becoming less and less attractive to traders and businesses, causing them to pull away, worsening the Sumeru economy. It's a vicious cycle that Al Haitham needs to break.
If Al Haitham had to list all the issues Port Ormos has caused him, he'd be able to write himself all the way to an economic degree. Which he'll be able to sign off, now that he thinks about it. He's the Acting Grand Sage. He'll announce his own name. Present the degree to himself. Shake his own hand.
But anyway, the main point is that if he's able to revitalise Port Ormos, many other issues will resolve themselves. He had finally had a lucky break that Thursday and was free to head to Port Ormos to speak to the trade supervisors. But then, of course, stuff happened, and he wasn't able to do all that.
Which is why he's heading back to Vimara village again today. He specifically worked through the entire night in his cold office, wet clothes clinging uncomfortably on his body just so he could make time today for this. This time, he's going to make sure he speaks to the trade supervisors and settle this once and for all. He's ready to negotiate to hell and back to ensure the port reopens.
No surprises today, he'll make sure of it.
"Oh! You're heading back to Vimara Village?"
Well. Never mind, then.
Tumblr media
The rising heat only hits the moment he walks out of the tavern.
Treasures Street is empty tonight because of the heavy rain. Shops have closed early- the only exception being the tavern. But even so, Al Haitham feels too exposed. He doesn't feel cold anymore. The heat blooming in his cheeks and all over him makes sure of that.
Al Haitham quickens his pace. There's still a long walk to the Akademiya. The faster he gets there, the more time he'll have to finish whatever he has to do.
The faster he gets there, the less time he'll have to think about what just happened.
Let's review.
First of all, he fainted. Presumably right in front or around her house- so that's how she found him. Fine. He can't fault himself for that. He had been running on less than three hours of sleep that week. The cherry on top had been that four-hour trek he had to do on top of that. He was exhausted. The human body has its limits.
But then he woke up and bawled his eyes out like a baby. In front of her. A total stranger. She pushed a bowl of the best meal he ever had (and his only meal in two days) into his face, and he cried. He cried so much that he passed out. Again. Until the following evening.
It takes a lot of willpower from Al Haitham to not squat down and cringe in the middle of the street.
Archons, he's pathetic.
His cheeks burn, and he instinctively moves a hand to cover his face. The movement is accompanied by a crumpling sound, which reminds him of the snack he was given before he left the tavern.
Taking cover under Menakeri's Treasure Shop, he removes the neatly bundled wrap from its paper bag. The rain isn't letting up. He couldn't be more drenched, but thankfully, the wrap is still dry- courtesy of the paper bag he took from Lambad's counter.
The wrap is still warm, and he curses when the rainwater on his hand seeps into the napkins. Removing it quickly, he holds the wrap in his hands.
Wait. What's he going to do with the wrap?
He should throw it away. It's a terrible waste of food, but he can't afford to eat and feel sleepy later. He has to finish everything and then some, so he'll be free to head back to Vimara village tomorrow.
She held out the bundle with trembling hands.
The wrap suddenly feels heavy. Looking around, he spots a rubbish bin just a step away outside the shop.
She had left her warm, comfortable spot just to make sure he had something to eat.
He should really get going. Throw it away. And then leave for the Akademiya. But his feet refuse to move.
"They're worried about you, you know?"
Why don't you worry about yourself instead?
Tumblr media
"Oh! You're heading back to Vimara Village?"
You weren't expecting to see the Acting Grand Sage again. Much less on the ferry Cyno had arranged to bring you back to Vimara village.
If the Acting Grand Sage was surprised, he hid it well. Slowly turning to face you, he coolly leans against the railings of the small, wooden ferry. But the piercing sound of creaking wood jolts him back up almost immediately.
"Yes." he hastily answers, turning around to check on the railing, pushing it back and forth, then squatting down and repeating the action.
A curt answer. What are you supposed to say to that? You can't even hum in agreement or find an opening to make small talk before you politely excuse yourself to take a seat inside.
The only sound filling the air now is the creaking of wood as he scrutinises the railing. You're not sure what he's checking for- it's just a loose railing, but you admire the dedication nonetheless. A minute passes.
An alternative course of action is to simply walk towards the seating area without saying anything else. But he's blocking the entrance. Taking a step forward, you shift closer to gauge how much space you have to move through it.
Nope. No way to pass through at all. His large build completely obstructs the entrance. There's no way to pass without saying anything, and you're not sure what you can say that isn't awkward.
"Uh, excuse me. I'm just going to pass- yeah, oh- you don't need to stand, just- sorry."
Yeah, say that, and proceed to simmer in uncomfortable silence with him in the seating area for the next hour and a half.
"...You're also heading back to the village?" there's another creak of wood as he shifts it from left to right now.
"Ah! Yes," you reply, eager to stave off the growing awkwardness. "I, uh, live there."
He stiffens at your answer and brushes a hand over his face. You see his shoulders slacken as he sighs.
Did...you say something wrong?
If you did, he doesn't comment on it. Finally standing up, he's turning around and-
"I'm just going to head in first!" you blurt out, taking the opportunity to rush past him into the seating area.
But of course, just as you finally get into the seating area, the ship suddenly rocks, throwing you off balance and onto the hard floor.
Tumblr media
Al Haitham's face is on fire. It must be because of the new soap he used this morning. Kaveh had pestered him for money to buy that brand, and he had finally caved. Yes, this is all Kaveh's fault.
No, he is not blushing. Why would he be? He isn't ill or feverish. Neither is he embarrassed.
It's just the soap. A mild allergic reaction, perhaps. But he isn't allergic to anything. Perhaps he should book an appointment at Bimarstan to confirm that. Allergies are dangerous.
Why can't he turn around?
There's a loud, rhythmic pulsing in his ear, which strangely is in phase with the beating of his heart. Is that his heartbeat he's hearing? Why is it so loud? And so fast? Also, why is his heart beating so hard?
He knows the answer. He just doesn't want to admit it.
Al Haitham is not embarrassed. Why should he be? It matters not what she thinks of him. She isn't causing him any trouble. She isn't someone he needs to work with. If anything, she is just another person now. She doesn't affect him or his life. To think about her is meaningless. It serves no purpose.
He doesn't care about her. She means nothing. She's just another stranger.
Oh, so this is about her, Kaveh's voice rings in his head. You're too embarrassed to face her!
Great. Now imaginary Kaveh is here. But, thankfully, logic is Kaveh's worst enemy.
And Al Haitham has a lot of logic.
Ok then, Kaveh, Al Haitham shifts the railing with more vigour. Let's say I am embarrassed.
You are!
Then what would I be embarrassed about?
Well, about the whole fainting incident! You made a fool of yourself right in front of a total stranger!
So? I'm only a human being. My body has limits that I'm not ashamed of.
You know that's not what I'm talking about.
Oh? Whatever do you mean?
About the whole crying and-
Nope. Al Haitham immediately cuts his internal debate with imaginary Kaveh short. He is not going to think about that now. But of course, you can never stop racing thoughts. Particularly ones provided by imaginary Kaveh.
Don't wanna think about it?
I've already gone through that with myself yesterday.
And what did you find out? That you-
That it was simply tears of relief, Al Haitham lies. In regards to getting good food and rest. A natural human response.
Ha! Yeah right-
Imaginary Kaveh is interrupted once again by the sound of shifting behind Al Haitham. It must be her. Waiting for him to say something back.
Well? Turn around and talk to her!
Why should I?
Unbelievable! Not even going to thank her for helping you?
He knows he should. He wants to. But his voice isn't working. Plus, he can't even turn to face her.
I wonder why.
It's because I'm inspecting the railing. Boats in Sumeru must pass the Sumeru Maritime Port Authorities' safety check, and one of the basic-
It's just a loose railing, and you know it! You're fiddling with it as an excuse to not-
More shifting behind him. What is she trying to do? A quick glance to his left tells him the answer.
Hey, you idiot fungus. You're blocking the entrance to the seating area!
Shit, Kaveh is right. Imaginary Kaveh, that is.
Stand up and move!
Wait. But wouldn't it be weird to just stand up and move? Without saying anything else? That would imply that Al Haitham was paying attention to her but not speaking back. Wouldn't that be strange? Rude, even?
Oh, worrying about weirding her out? And since when have you ever cared about niceties?
Shit, imaginary Kaveh is right. Again. This isn't like him. At all.
Ugh! If you're not going to move, at least say something! You're making her feel uncomfortable!
Say what?! Why don't you suggest something helpful for once?
I don't know? It's your conversation! Not mine! Just ask something! Anything! Before this whole situation becomes too awkward beyond repair!
In a haste, much to imaginary Kaveh and Al Haitham's absolute horror, Al Haitham's mouth decides to go off on its own and ask the most stupid, brain-dead question.
"...You're also heading back to the village?"
Oh, Archons.
Al Haitham shifts the railing from left to right. Maybe if he does that enough, by some scientific principle that he has not come across yet, it'll be like a lever, and time would rewind and-
When I said to ask anything, I meant something like "Slept well last night?" or "Were the toiletries I bought for you sufficient?" not whatever you just asked.
"Ah! Yes," she replies. "I, uh, live there."
Great. Now she thinks you're an idiot, you idiot.
What kind of question is that? The answer is obvious. So obvious, that Al Haitham feels the need to redeem himself. A prickling sensation on his face spreads from his cheeks all the way up to the tips of his ears, and Al Haitham uses a hand to try to rub it away.
Archons, even asking what her name is would have been a better question than that!
Enough yapping! How can I fix this?
Al Haitham can't believe he's asking Kaveh, even if in imaginary form, for help. But desperate times call for desperate measures. And Kaveh-like problems require Kaveh-like solutions.
Well, start off by actually turning around to talk to her! Even imaginary Kaveh is surprised by his request for advice. Ask her what her name is! That sounds like a good way to kick-start a less awkward conversation. And save this whole interaction.
But I don't want a conversation. I-
Do you want her to feel even more uncomfortable than she probably already is?
With a deep sigh, Al Haitham tries to compose himself. Willing away the heat in his face, he stands back up. His knees ache a little, but he ignores the pain as he turns to face her but-
"I'm just going to head in first!"
And there she goes, bolting towards the now unobstructed entrance, leaving Al Haitham alone on the deck, momentarily stunned by her sudden departure.
She's barely two steps into the seating area when the ship rocks. Al Haitham catches his balance with practised elegance, but unfortunately, the same could not be said for her.
With a loud thud, she crashes into the ground as the boat begins to turn.
"Are you alright?" all earlier thoughts disappear from Al Haitham's mind as worry fills the gaps. Rushing over, he kneels at her side, watching her as she turns around with a hiss.
"It's fine." she winces, turning over before extending both legs.
"Your left ankle is starting to swell," Al Haitham mutters, comparing the size of her ankles through the straps of her sandals. "A sprained ankle."
"Well," She shifts to sit upwards. Leaning over, she takes a closer look at her ankle. "It doesn't look as bad as it feels."
"It may soon if we don't take care of it," Al Haitham shifts closer to her ankle. "May I?"
When she nods, he gently removes her footwear. Looking around the seating area, he frowns as he realises the absence of a first aid kit. That means no cold compresses or bandages.
"We'll have to elevate it," Al Haitham mutters. "Let's move closer to the benches."
"Ah, ok," she kicks her right leg inwards she pushes her weight onto it as she tries to stand. "Well-"
The boat wobbles, and she nearly falls again. , Al Haitham catches hold of her arm, steadying her.
"That isn't going to work," Al Haitham states before she could thank him. "Sit back down."
She does so, giving him a questioning look. Gently moving her legs so that her knees are outstretched and bent, he hooks an arm under her knee and uses the other to support her back as he stands.
"Woah!" her arms begin to flail.
"Calm down," Al Haitham moves his face away from a hand that nearly hits him. "Just- put that arm here."
"Where?"
"Shoulder," he huffs as he bounces her to secure his hold around her. "Hold on."
Tumblr media
The boat rocks, but the Acting Grand Sage doesn't seem worried about falling. In fact, he walks on as if he's on flat ground. All while carrying you.
He gently places you down on the floor next to the nearest metal bench before kneeling next to you again.
"I'm just going to put your leg up here," he assists your ankle up on the bench. "Leave your ankle like this."
"Thank you," you murmur. "I'm sorry for the trouble."
He sighs, heading back towards the entrance to retrieve your sandals. You can't look at him as he walks back to you.
This is so embarrassing.
It was bad enough that things were already so awkward. Oh, Archons. You've already made a faux pas earlier at the deck. Now with this? He must be furious.
Then, in a move that proceeded to stun you- and honestly scare you a little he sits down.
On the floor.
All the benches around, and he chooses to sit on the floor with you.
"No need to thank me." the Acting Grand Sage releases another sigh as he relaxes his shoulders, leaning on the side of the bench beside yours.
He then pulls out a book from somewhere behind his cape and begins to read.
"Would you…prefer to sit on the bench? I'm sure it's much more comfortable there."
"It's a metal bench. It'll feel just as hard as the floor."
Again, another curt response.
Biting your lip in shame, you feel a heat roll up your cheek.
"Acting Grand Sage, I just want to apologise for-"
"Al Haitham."
"I'm sorry, what?"
"My name," he shuts his book, turning his head to face you now. "It's less of a mouthful compared to that. And you are?"
Name. Yes. You can give that.
You tell him your name, trying your hardest to keep your voice as stable as possible. You really don't want to embarrass yourself further.
He repeats your name with an almost contemplative tone. He said it softly, compared to the surrounding noises of the ship. But it's the only sound that fills your ears.
"You have nothing to apologise for," the Acting Grand Sage- no, Al Haitham says. With yet another sigh, he continues. "It's actually me who has to apologise."
"What do you mean?" you frown. You don't recall him doing anything wrong.
"I," he pauses, placing his book aside as his hand rubs against the back of his neck. "I'm sorry if I've made you feel uncomfortable."
He shifts slightly, fidgeting with the ends of his cape.
"I also have to apologise for getting you into this mess," he goes on. "And for not thanking you for helping me back then."
"There's no need to thank me for that!" you answer. "And there's no need to apologise as well. Everyone has been kind to me. This was all a misunderstanding."
And just like that, the awkwardness is gone. Instead, a soothing silence envelopes the space between the two of you. You finally get the courage to glance at him, and now that you're relaxed, you notice something a little strange about his attire.
He isn't wearing anything different than yesterday. But the cape-
His cape!
"I passed your cape to Cyno when I got to the hostel," you say, voice laced with worry. "Did you get it?"
That cape looked expensive. But more importantly, you don't think you'd be able to show your face to anyone ever again if you lost the Acting Grand Sage's cape.
"I did," you let out a sigh of relief. "Cyno passed it to me yesterday."
"Did you work through the night?" you ask.
"Yes. I managed to finish everything by dawn, so I went back home to rest before heading out again."
"At dawn? So you did work through the night then!" you huff. "You have to take care of yourself! If not, you'll pass out again."
"I was well rested after I fell asleep at your place."
"You did not fall asleep. You passed out!"
"Well, it was rest either way."
"Then, did you at least eat the wrap we gave you?"
He stills. Suddenly, the chatty vibe between the two of you had disappeared.
"I," he breaks the stillness. "I ate a little bit of it. On the way back to the Akademiya."
He looks a little guilty, but you let it go.
"I'll take your word for it."
Another silence fills the air. You wiggle the toes on your left foot. It aches, but not as much as before, thankfully. But it'll still be a pain to deal with on the walk back home.
"Did you rest well last night?" he asks, breaking the silence again.
"I did," you recall, thinking about that room you were given. "Do all Akademiya students live in rooms like that? Everything was provided!"
You had thought a student hostel would have only the bare essentials, like a bed, wardrobe and a desk. But in the room you were led to, everything you could have possibly needed was there. Soaps, room slippers, sanitary pads and tampons, and even snacks!
"…Yes," he stretches his neck. "I'm glad you got a good night's rest."
"You should get one too, you know?" you say, turning to face him. "Your friends are worried about you."
And they really are. To the rest of Sumeru, he may just be a temporary authority figure. But to Kaveh, he's his housemate and closest friend. And to Cyno, he's his rival and fellow comrade.
"I know they are," he shares. "But we all have jobs to do."
He looks up, out of the window, far out into the blue sky. It's a sunny day today.
"We should be back at the village in about an hour's time."
"Well, why don't you go get some rest then? I'll wake you when we arrive."
"Thank you." He gives your ankle one last look, making sure nothing got worse. Leaning his head back onto the side of the metal bench, he closes his eyes.
You pray to the Dendro Archon to make his dreams sweet as you watch sleep take him away.
Tumblr media
"Did you get it?"
"I think so?"
"Oh, it's blurry! Let me try!"
"Kaveh, wait! Don't lean on that or-"
For an architect, Kaveh is surprisingly terrible at guessing the relative structural integrity of objects. This is why the boxes Kaveh thought were stable (and then proceeded to lean on) come falling down, much to Cyno's dismay.
Naturally, the shopkeeper was furious about Kaveh destroying a whole batch of new wares. Kaveh had racked up quite the bill (which Cyno feels will end up being paid for by Al Haitham), but-
"But it's all worth it. Look!" he gloats, showing Cyno the printed picture.
"Well, would you look at that? Told you this was a good idea!" Kaveh continues.
Well, Archons be damned.
Cyno isn't one who would usually follow Kaveh's pranks or ploys. But if it's going to keep producing results like this, he may consider calling Tighnari to join in on the fun.
"Told you I would be able to get them on the same boat," Cyno smirks, handing the photo back to Kaveh for safekeeping. "What now?"
"Now, we wait," Kaveh takes one last look at the photo, admiring their handiwork before shutting it together with the kamera inside his briefcase. "And when he comes back, oh, it will be fun."
Little did these two know what they have started.

So when talking about 2023 I think the idea isn’t that Charles “dragged it up there” in term of speed. The SF-23 was considered fast in qualifying like you said because it didn’t have to deal with its tire degradation.
Instead he dragged it up there because the SF-23 was a car that has the fraises: “notoriously unpredictable”, “unreliable”, “chronic understeer mid-corners”, “instability”, “unwanted moment under breaking”, “complicated” all attributed to its name when it came to its behaviour and drivability.
In other words: Ferrari have often produced a fast car. That doesn’t mean the cars haven’t got a history of being shitboxes in nearly every other departments.
The amount of times post testing, qualifying, race you would have Charles and/or Carlos saying that neither they nor the team really understood why the car behaved as it did, both when it was good (aka the surprise that was Mexico qualifying, just giving it your all and for once have the car compliying) and when it was bad (see: Charles in Spain actually questioning if there’s was something seriously wrong with the car because of how badly it was behaving, and the mechanics and engineers not finding that unrealistic/believing him because their also didn’t understand the car). Even at the end of the year this was still a problem (looking at Abu Dhabi qualifying Q3 Charles first lap time).
To top that off the only way for the SF-23 to be somewhat predictable was with an understeer setup, which is the exact opposite setup of what Charles drives with.
None of this spell out a car which you, at speeds of 350 km/h throwing it around corners cm for the wall, would fully trust, feel comfortable or even be capable of giving and maintaining control of that extra insane push which is needed for a pole position.
Yet he managed 5 poles, the same amount of poles as the rest of the grid (minus max) combined.
Considering all this is I think why many agree with the sentiment that putting that car on pole is in deed “dragging it up there” when dealing with 1) a car you hate (he actually confirmed it’s testing was the worst testing of his carrier, even though he drove the awful SF1000 from 2020). 2) the disadvantage of spending so much of practice trying a large amount of setups because the car just won’t work with the type you usually have, and on top of that is so intolerant that it has trouble working with most setups in general (and starting this process all over again every race, because again no one really understands the car so who knows how it will behave on a different track) . And 3) a car that despite all that effort still is extremely unpredictable.
This came out very matter of fact but is meant as a different point of view.
Fair points. Although there were moments where the unpredictability/lack of trust in the car led to Charles binning it, which to my recollection Carlos didn’t.
I still think on his best day, Charles is the fastest of the grid over one lap. I do think the importance of that is overstated by a lot of his fans though. Because they don’t hand out points for breaking the sound barrier when 19 other cars are getting out of the way for you.
In equal machinery (by this I mean machinery equally optimised for the driver’s preferences), there’s still a few drivers I would put ahead of Charles in a title fight just in terms of their mentality, and their completeness as drivers over a season. And I think some of that is because Charles hasn’t had the experience of being in an efficient team, in the right car. There’s certain things you can only pick up when you’re in the best possible position. Regardless, I think there’s still space for growth. His talent is head and shoulders above nearly everyone on the grid, but as a complete package idk if I’d say he was.
I’m interested to see what he does with the car this year considering he was so positive after testing.

ALABAMA’S AGING BLACK FARMERS UNCERTAIN ABOUT FUTURE AS THEY STRUGGLE TO CREATE LINES OF SUCCESSION
Billy Gibbons intends to die on this land.
At 70, the bespectacled Black farmer may very well be the last heir to work the family plot; 80  acres of black soil in Browntown, Alabama, an unincorporated community less than 20 miles  north of Prattville.
Gibbons’ parents pinched and scraped to purchase the acreage for $850 in 1940. They intended  to pass it down to him and his brother; but he died in 1976 after contracting meningitis while  away at military training in Fort Polk, Louisiana.
“I can remember all of this was woods,” Gibbons said, waving his arm over the crop land that  extended before him. It was a brooding morning that had already spilled rain and left his feet  besieged by shallow pools of muddy water.
The old farmer wore a faded army jacket and dark cap with worn blue jeans;  occasionally pulling his face mask to the side to expel a portion of the chewing tobacco  occupying his right cheek, before apologizing for the habit.
“As far as you can see to woods was woods,” he spat.
The forest was so dense, and the family’s resources so limited, they worked only five acres of  farmland to start.
“My Daddy, he done all the cleaning with a mule, a ax and a shovel,” said Gibbons.
They farmed row crops — collards, turnips, mustard greens — and bought a couple head of  cattle. Gibbons had trees pushed off with bulldozers through the years. He now owns about 50  head, which he spreads across the family land and some 170 acres he rents just a mile up the  road.
With the help of his wife, he hauls most of his vegetables weekly at the Curb Market downtown  where in 1999, he became its first African American vendor. He would serve as president for nine years.
“This is a tradition here, and it’s still standing,” he said.
But for how long?
Like so many of the nation’s Black farmers, mostly clustered in the South, the future remains  uncertain.
In 1920, African Americans accounted for 14% of all U.S. farm operators. That number has  since dwindled to a staggering 1.4% percent. Alabama, the third most populous state for Black  producers, sits at 6%, according to 2017’s agriculture census.
At the turn of the 20th century, Black landowners held 15 million acres. Today, they own 3.4  million, about half a percent of American farmland.
Black farmers have faced discrimination at every level, struggling against social and financial  barriers to achieve land ownership and the right to operate their farms independently within an  agricultural economy that has long profited from the exploitation of their labor through slavery,  sharecropping and legal loopholes.
Over decades, many southern Black families lost land due violent intimidation, deceit and  financial hardship. Farmers who sought loans from government agencies to keep their properties  running in lean times or make needed improvements were denied, shortchanged or failed to  receive timely assistance. (The United States Department of Agriculture settled in 1999 the class  action lawsuit Pigford v. Glickman brought by Black farmers alleging more than two decades of  lending discrimination.)
While the latest agriculture census reported a 5% increase in Black producers between 2012 and  2017 after revisions to its data collection, there was also a 3% decline in Black operated farms.
“What I hope we don't see is the eventual extinction of the Black farmer,” said Brennan  Washington. He works with limited resource farmers across the South as a Sustainable  Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) liaison at Fort Valley State, a historically Black  land grant college in Georgia.
In the past, Washington said, a Black farmer with a large acreage may have applied for a USDA  loan to purchase seed, among other necessities, and would find their application lagging.
“[USDA] would process the paperwork too late for them to get their seed on time. So, they get  their seed in the ground too late, they don’t get a crop, meanwhile they’ve got a lien on that  property that USDA will seize if they can’t get it paid,” he said.
Further complicating matters is the fact that farmers are aging, and many are finding it  increasingly difficult to get young people to replace them. Nationally, the average age of a farm  owner is 57½ years old; 43% of Black farmers are 65 and older.
'Farming has shrunk from a mile to 300 feet'
Browntown is a Black community founded on farming. According to local history, twin brothers  with the surname Brown bought the land that encompasses about a 20-mile radius; it was  parceled among their heirs when they died. Gibbons’ grandmother was a Brown.
But the promise of higher-wage work, and the perceived freedom from Jim Crow segregation  and racism lured many young Black people north during the Great Migration between 1916 and  1970, away from rural farm towns like these.
“Most of the farmers had large families and they kids was brought up on the farm. But as years  got by and all these kids grow up, they was rushing to get away from the farm, because the farm was a struggle — still is a struggle,” said Gibbons.
The figures are dramatic. Between 1940 and 1950, more than 42% of the nonwhite Southern  population vanished. That number rose to 65% for nonwhite youth between the ages of 15 and  19, according to a 2007 SARE report.
With four biological children and four stepchildren, Gibbons has no shortage of heirs. But their  desire to enter a business they've watched their father struggle to maintain over the years is  lacking, which means the family is currently without a contingency plan.
Marshall, 58, and Lorenzo Davis, 66, co-own Davis Farms about a mile west of  Gibbons’ property and face a similar consequence. The brothers farm row crops, rotating  varieties of watermelon, field peas, snap beans and other seasonal crops they sell daily at the  Finley Avenue Farmer’s Market in Birmingham.
As farm operators, the two have found themselves in a position they never intended. Fond  memories of time spent working alongside their father on the farm throughout their youth  persuaded them to keep the business alive after he passed in 2004.
The brothers farm about 300 acres, half which belongs to the family, and 40 acres the late Davis  bought in 1960. That land is legally split between Lorenzo, Marshall and a third brother,  Andrew, who farms independently.
Like many operators, the Davis’ maintained full-time jobs to keep their farm going. Lorenzo  retired in 2014 after 33 years as a correctional officer, and Marshall is still currently employed at  a facility in Elmore County. He wakes early most days to put in work at the farm before heading  to the prison for the second shift from 2 to 10 p.m.
“Twenty years ago, when our father was in operation, we had cows and hogs. At one time, we  were up to 200 acres of field corn,” said Lorenzo.
By the late-90s they had quit farming cattle. The cost of feed was expensive, and profits were  slim. Bills on a farm add up quickly — seed, fertilizer, fuel, equipment maintenance. Lorenzo  pointed out a 20-year-old tractor they owned that cost them $60,000 to buy brand new; an  equivalent today, he said, would be well over a $100,000.
“We might eventually have to get back into growing grain because we’re aging now and you can  gather all that with machinery,” Marshall said. “Help is harder to come by now than it was 20  years ago.”
Like Gibbons, the Davis brothers remain passionate about farming but are struggling to devise a  transition plan. Marshall’s 36-year-old daughter sometimes assists him at the farmer’s market.,  and Lorenzo has a 35-year-old son that has indicated an interest in the operation, but he doesn’t  have much experience and works a good-paying job that his farm income would likely never match.
Without a probated will, farms are vulnerable to becoming  heirs’ property
Most farm operators are generational, acquiring land as it is handed down through family  members.
While 65% of white Americans with a high school education report having a will, only 23% of  Black Americans possess one, according to a study reviewed by Texas A&M law scholar  Thomas Mitchell who studies heirs’ property; land owned by multiple people who typically  share a common relative that’s died without leaving a probated will.
Kara Woods has studied heirs’ property in Macon County as a postdoctoral researcher at  Tuskegee University (TU). The historically Black 1890 land grant school’s research and  extension programs provide agricultural education and support to Black producers; often subject  to the same imposed financial limitations the farmers they serve face (Congress mandated 1890s  because southern land grants they created 28 years prior barred Black students).
“It really goes down to generations ago when everything was in the family bible,” Woods said.  “You might have the lineage in the family bible, [unofficial] wills in the family bible. People  who were able to get land after becoming free didn’t trust white lawyers because they didn’t  have means to read and write. So, at that point it was safer to keep the land without a will  because you knew the family could always stay on it,” said Woods.
One of the problems with heir’s property is that it isn’t divided by parcels or acres; it’s split by  percentage. That means that if a family has 50 acres and five heirs, each would be entitled to  10% of the land, not 10 acres. So, the more heirs a property has, the less value each person  holds.
Because heir’s property is an informal form of ownership that involves multiple people, most  banks refuse to allow the land to be used as collateral in financial lending, and it’s generally  appraised at a lower value than clear title land.
These properties also rarely qualify for state and federal grant programs that cover everything  from community development, to disaster relief and housing. Without individual ownership,  heir’s property isn’t an effective tool for building generational wealth.
Before Alabama approved the Uniform Partition of Heirs Property Act, co-drafted  by Mitchell, in 2014, a single heir could force the sale of an entire property through a legal  partition action. Usually the sale would net far less than market value for the land. (The 2018  Farm Bill includes a provision sponsored by former Sen. Doug Jones that would authorize $10  million a year through 2023 to help farmers resolve ownership and address succession issues to  avoid this and other snags.)
Lack of generational leads put Black farmers on the back foot
Though fourth-generation Black Belt farmer Demetrius Hooks, 47, knows the value of a will,  he’s had a hard time convincing his father, Al Hooks, 72, of the urgency in getting an official  document drawn up.
Like the Davis’, Demetrius never imagined he'd assume farming as an occupation. He 'd always  helped around on weekends at the Shorter farm, but when he lost his graphic design job at this  newspaper around 2010, he spent more time there.
The father and son talked it over and decided Demetrius should assume a more official role. A  few years later, he ended up at TU working as a farm internship liaison.
Demetrius handles sales and marketing for Al Hooks Produce, and his father does most of the  farm work, though the younger Hooks does get his hands dirty every now and again. He has two  siblings who have families of their own, but none work the farm.
The Hooks grow fruits and vegetables that they sell each weekend at the Macon County  Farmer’s Market and through direct sales via text message to customers who pick up their  “veggie crates” weekly at Demetrius’ home. They hold farm stands at Auburn and Birmingham’s  summer markets, too.
Through a cooperative partnership facilitated by TU, the Hooks previously sold some produce  items to Walmart. That created a need for an onsite processing plant to wash, refrigerate and  package the vegetables. They were able to secure a $75,000 grant to build the $125,000 site and increase their capability.
Beyond the need to expand capacity, large retail contracts like these often require special  certifications like GAP (good agricultural practices) that can be time consuming and expensive.  And it can take months to receive payment.
Demetrius said the business had previously maintained a contract with Whole Foods, supplying  them squash, zucchini, peppers and collard greens for a few years. When Amazon acquired the  company in 2017 subsequent changes were made to their vendor specifications, which coincided  with a cancer diagnosis. They could barely keep up with the requirements.
For many small Black farms that lack capital to pay certification costs or labor to meet greater  demand, these large contracts remain out of reach.
The Hooks no longer sell to either large chain and are currently working with smaller regional  retailers like Filet and Vine in Old Cloverdale; though they will again attempt to meet Whole  Foods’ certification requirements now that Demetrius’ cancer is one-year in remission.
There’s a “gap in business development. It would be nice if everybody started their business at  the same time and you didn’t have years of being locked out of certain opportunities because  you’re Black. Once those blockages and implements of discrimination have been removed it’s  not as if the next day I can easily walk into Whole Foods and be ready to deliver to them,” said  Demetrius.
“You still have those generational leads. Other businesses that didn’t have those problems have  that benefit of being able to maneuver through those obstacles once they come up.”
Although nothing has yet been written in ink, Demetrius has expressed to his father his interest  in taking over the farm when he retires. But the matter of a probated will still hangs in the balance.
“I don't really think I should have a say of how it's done; it's how he wants to do it. But I need  him to come out and tell me,” he said.
Certifications allow access to wider markets, but can be  costly and limiting
In recent years, a burgeoning cultural movement has emerged seeking a return to African  American agricultural traditions. Urban farmers, many of them women, have cleared blighted  plots and cleaned up city blocks in an effort to nourish and beautify Black communities that too  often lack access to fresh produce and healthy food options. The trend of “reverse migration,”  first observed in the 1970s, continues as more Black people return to ancestral land in rural  communities across the South.
“There’s a new awakening that's happening where people who left during the Great Migration  and went to work a job in Detroit or Ohio, they're coming back to Alabama and Georgia and  Mississippi,” said Natilee McGruder, a community land, food and farming systems advocate,  who's currently working to connect local Black farmers with a national seasonal food chain.
“There are young Black people who are in New York and California who are landless, who want  to farm, who are ‘woofing.’ There are elders connecting with young folks. And there are the  1890s that have always been here to support Black culture, Black community and Black farmers.  There's a complete renaissance that's happening,” said McGruder.
At 77, Josie Gbadamosi-El Amin, may well be a part of this Black agrarian rebirth. When she began farming 10 years ago, she had no experience.
With bright eyes and a wide smile, the retired substance abuse counselor described how she fell  in love with Shady Grove Blueberry Patch after a friend clued her in on a “secret” spot where  locals picked berries on a conveniently absent farmer’s Tuskegee property.
“I had to lock my eyes on the line of trees because it was so overgrown that I was afraid I might  get disoriented, and I better find my way out,” she said. “But I was just enamored by the blueberry bushes. It was just so wonderful. I had never seen anything like it. There was  something about the spirit of this place.”
She inquired after the land and found a few leads, purchasing the 46-acre farm in 2010. The  move was so left field that her four daughters were concerned she may have hit her head and  corrupted her judgement in a recent slip and fall accident, she recounted; then burst into peals of laughter.
For the Watts, California native, owning a farm has been an all-consuming experience. So much  to learn and so much to do.
Gbadamosi-El Amin moved to Tuskegee in 1969 to study sociology at TU. That connection paid  itself forward for the new farm operator. From the agricultural school, she learned that the  acreage she purchased was the former site of a working farm project led by Booker T. Whatley, the “small farm guru” who popularized the pick-your-own harvest method and subscription  buyer’s club model (commonly known today as CSA) before it was widely adopted.
What looked like a mess of trees, tangled weeds, and overgrown bushes was in fact a model for  sustainable agriculture cultivated by one of the country’s foremost experts on regenerative  farming.
In exchange for seedlings, Gbadamosi-El Amin got a farmer to bring his tractor and a couple  workers in to help clean up, as well as some Tuskegee students who joined in. The operation still  runs as a “u-pick” service, inviting visitors to gather their own blueberries from the shrubs in late  May through mid-August. The retired counselor also sells jams, dried fruit and blueberry tizanes  — a fragrant, nutrient rich tonic that’s made from the leaves and fruit.
Education has been at the forefront of her approach. She and her husband work on the farm full time. With the help of extension agents at Tuskegee, Gbadamosi-El Amin has attended  agriculture workshops and is learning how to write grants to apply for farm subsidies  and improvements.
She regularly invites people interested in learning about agriculture to Shady Grove and even has  allowed some to experiment with growing plants and herbs like turmeric, moringa and hibiscus  on site. Although she uses organic methods, she is hesitant to seek certification, not solely  because of the associated costs and paperwork but because it would likely prevent her from  facilitating the sort of collaborative environment the farm’s ethos is grounded in.
“Once you get certified then you have to put all kinds of limits on your property. You can’t have  people just wandering in the field to you-pick. You have to really control things. It really begins  to limit the kind of interaction people can have,” she said. “What I wanted for the farm was to be  a place where people could relax and enjoy themselves. That was part of what motivated me.”
Gbadamosi-El Amin said her daughters have since warmed to the idea of owning a family farm  and have pushed her to create a formal long-term business proposal before they agree to get on  board with any succession plans.
New federal legislation can help, but advocates face an uphill battle
In November, Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Kirsten Gillibrand  (D-NY) introduced the Justice for Black Farmers Act, an attempt to address systemic barriers to  success that operators have long faced; and encourage a new generation of young Black farmers  who have the will but lack the capital to get established.
Among its aims are to reform USDA policies that facilitate discrimination, protect remaining  Black-owned land, financially empower HBCUs to assist socially disadvantaged farmers and  ranchers, and establish a land grant program to support young, landless Black farmers. The bill  would also create an agency mandated to return land to Black farmers previously seized by the  government and create a federal bank to allow easier access to credit for farmers of color.
On Feb. 15, Democratic senators took that action a step further when they introduced the  Emergency Relief for Farmers of Color Act, a bill that would provide $4B in direct payments to  these farmers to cover losses incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as systemic  discrimination. The bill, which has been lauded as historic by the National Black Farmer’s  Association, would also lay out an additional $1 billion to address discriminatory practices at the  USDA.
It will be an uphill battle to get these measures passed, but either bill would throw a much needed lifeline to farmers. Without them, the future remains as clouded as ever.
Gibbons, the 70-year-old Browntown man, for his part, is like most farmers, steadfast in his love  and commitment to the livelihood. He was also frank about the farm’s future: there isn't one.  Why counsel his children to leave good-paying jobs for such a risky profession?
He was brought up on farm life, the children lack his passion, he said; and would likely be  unwilling to make the necessary sacrifices demanded.
“They couldn’t survive, I don’t think," Gibbons said. "Aggravation. That’s what farming is all  about. I don’t know whether I love it or I’m crazy. It’s in my heart and I have no intention to  quit. I’m just going have to die at it."

New Neuroscience Reveals 2 Rituals That Will Make You More Mindful
***
Before we commence with the festivities, I wanted to thank everyone for helping my first book become a Wall Street Journal bestseller. To check it out, click here.
***
You want to get to work but instead you surf the internet. You want to diet but instead you eat enough candy to give an entire 2nd grade classroom type 2 diabetes. Why?
You might think you lack self-control. Or that you make bad decisions. But none of these explanations ever seems to get to the bottom of why what-you-think and what-you-do all too frequently don’t line up.
What the heck is going in your brain that causes these inconsistencies? Sometimes it’s almost like you’re 2 different people. Or 3. Or 19.
There’s a very simple answer: you are 19 different people. Or 4. Or 107. But what you aren’t is one person. Yeah, sounds crazy, I know. Stay with me…
Over 1000 years ago Buddhism — where mindfulness techniques come from — said that there is no singular “you.” The “self” does not exist. Sound like crazy nonsense? I’m with you. (All 27 of you, actually.) But here’s the thing…
Both neuroscience and psychology are starting to agree. Sometimes you don’t act like you because there is no singular “you.”
And this positively perplexing proposition holds the answer to why you do dumb things, procrastinate, can’t follow through on your goals, and why some days it seems like everyone – including you — is a total hypocrite.
Strap in — we’re gonna turn everything you know about your grey matter upside down and give you a completely new way of looking at your mind and how it works. Of course, we’ll also cover how to address this issue and start getting your act together.
Alright, enough foreplay. It’s time for me and you (and you, and you and you) to get to work…
Walt Whitman, You Do Contain Multitudes
There is no “you.” There are a lot of yous in your head. But do legit scientists really agree with such a seemingly ridiculous statement? Here’s Duke psychology professor Dan Ariely:
…our models of human behavior need to be rethought. Perhaps there is no such thing as a fully integrated human being. We may, in fact, be an agglomeration of multiple selves.
What we’re talking about is the cutting edge theory of the “modular mind.” (Okay, it’s old news to Buddhist monks but cutting edge to the rest of us.)
The human brain wasn’t built top to bottom as a single project like Apple builds a computer. It evolved over millions of years in a very messy fashion. Various systems (or “modules”) came about to drive you to accomplish different tasks like seeking food, fighting, reproduction, etc. But here’s the problem…
They were never integrated. So these systems compete to steer the ship that is your brain. Your mind is less like a single computer operating system and more like a collection of smartphone apps where only one can be open and running at a time.
Here’s noted science author Robert Wright:
In this view, your mind is composed of lots of specialized modules—modules for sizing up situations and reacting to them—and it’s the interplay among these modules that shapes your behavior. And much of this interplay happens without conscious awareness on your part. The modular model of the mind, though still young and not fully fleshed out, holds a lot of promise. For starters, it makes sense in terms of evolution: the mind got built bit by bit, chunk by chunk, and as our species encountered new challenges, new chunks would have been added. As we’ll see, this model also helps make sense of some of life’s great internal conflicts, such as whether to cheat on your spouse, whether to take addictive drugs, and whether to eat another powdered-sugar doughnut.
Now modules aren’t physical structures in the brain, just like apps aren’t hardware in your phone. They’re software; the human nature algorithms that Mother Nature coded over thousands of generations of evolution.
So you want to diet but you see donuts and your brain’s hunger module (like the “Grubhub” app) hjacks control and says, “Food! Eat it. Now.” Or you want to be nice but your mind’s anger app (“Angry Birds”) takes charge and you’re saying things another app is really going to regret tomorrow. You’re like a walking live performance of Pixar’s “Inside Out.”
Now this isn’t as alien as it might sound. When you do something while drunk or tired what’s the phrase you often pull out? “I wasn’t myself.”
Yeah. Exactly. Upside: you can now use the royal “we” to describe yourself.
(To learn more about the science of a successful life, check out my new book here.)
So how do we prevent hijacking by the wrong module at the wrong time and make better decisions? First we need to learn how those inappropriate modules get hold of your steering wheel…
Feelings. Nothing More Than Feelings.
Whichever module has the most emotional kick attached to it at any point wins the competition to be “you.”
You see a pizza commercial and it stirs up feelings of hunger and that “Grubhub” app hijacks control. Then you see someone attractive, feelings stir in your nether regions, the “Tinder” app takes charge and your brain is under new management yet again.
Under this lens, many of the confusing and frustrating things about human behavior start to make a lot of sense:
Of course people are hypocritical. They’re made up of competing “selves” with very different goals and different information. Uncle Al is the most reasonable guy in the world — unless his “politics module” takes charge.
Are people good or bad? They’re both. The metaphorical angel on one shoulder and devil on the other are just different modules in the brain with different motivations.
Those emotional persuasion techniques? They’re an attempt to switch the other person’s dominant module. To get them to go from that competitive Chess app to something more friendly like Facebook.
Why do you lack self-control? Because now the word doesn’t make any sense. It’s actually “selves-control.” Your behavior isn’t inconsistent; the “you” in charge is inconsistent.
Is it starting to click now? Here’s University of Pennsylvania psychology professor Robert Kurzban:
Some modules are designed to gather benefits, others are designed to deliver benefits, and they exist in the same head, sometimes in conflict. In the same way, this analysis does away with the question of whether individual acts are “really” self-interested. Different kinds of acts advance the goals that some, but not other, modules are designed to bring about. So, both meanings of “self-interest” seem to be a problem because different modules have different designs, and are therefore built to bring about different outcomes.
I had a girlfriend named Natalia who, whenever she got caught doing something naughty, would smirk and say, “That wasn’t me. That was Natasha.” I would roll my eyes but it turns out Natalia knew a lot more about neuroscience than I did. (Um, or Natasha did. Whatever. You get the point.)
You’re often a slave to your emotional reactions to the world around you. You react to your context with feelings, those give one module more power than another, and that one hijacks decision-making in your brain…
Until new feelings are stirred up and another module takes charge. And this happens over and over and over all day long.
Here’s Robert Wright:
The human brain is a machine designed by natural selection to respond in pretty reflexive fashion to the sensory input impinging on it. It is designed, in a certain sense, to be controlled by that input. And a key cog in the machinery of control is the feelings that arise in response to the input. If you interact with those feelings… via the natural, reflexive thirst for the pleasant feelings and the natural, reflexive aversion to the unpleasant feelings—you will continue to be controlled by the world around you.
Your brain is like a car with a terrible automatic transmission. Any car fanatic knows if you want total control, you want a stick shift. You want to be able to choose which gear is engaged to best suit the current challenges ahead.
But you have this horrendous automatic transmission and so often your brain is in 1st gear on the highway and in 5th gear backing out of a parking spot and the results are far from what you desired.
(To learn the 3 secrets from neuroscience that will make you emotionally intelligent, click here.)
So how can we replace your automatic transmission with a nice stick shift? How do we prevent your grey matter from being continually hijacked by whatever emotions well up inside you?
How To Prevent Brain Hijack
Buddhism recognized this problem over 1000 years ago. And it also came up with a solution: mindfulness meditation.
But wait a second — Buddhism is a religion, right? Hold on. You can improve your body with yoga without being Hindu. And you can improve your brain through meditation without being Buddhist. Meditation is a secular tool for strengthening mental muscles.
And neuroscience gives it a big thumbs up. Studies show meditation trains your brain to be less reactive to emotional swings and can prevent the wrong module from hijacking control of your brain.
From
The meditators’ brains were scanned while they saw disturbing images of people suffering, like burn victims. The seasoned practitioners’ brains revealed a lowered level of reactivity in the amygdala; they were more immune to emotional hijacking. The reason: their brains had stronger operative connectivity between the prefrontal cortex, which manages reactivity, and the amygdala, which triggers such reactions. As neuroscientists know, the stronger this particular link in the brain, the less a person will be hijacked by emotional downs and ups of all sorts.
And this helps you make better decisions.
Here’s Robert Wright:
After all, one virtue of mindfulness meditation is that experiencing your feelings with care and clarity, rather than following them reflexively and uncritically, lets you choose which ones to follow—like, say, joy, delight, and love.
When you’re better able to cope with feelings and not just instinctively reacting to them, you’re able to stay calm and resist hijacking. And astronauts, samurai and Navy SEALs all agree that the key to making good decisions — especially under pressure — is keeping your cool.
(To learn the 4 rituals from neuroscience that will make you happy, click here.)
Great. So how do you meditate to get those powerful brain benefits?
Meditation 101
Dan Harris wrote the most accessible — and most entertaining — book on meditation out there: 10% Happier. And when I spoke to him, here’s how he explained the dead simple way to build those brain biceps:
It really involves three extremely simple steps.
One: Sit with your eyes closed and your back straight.
Two: Notice what it feels like when your breath comes in and when your breath goes out, try to bring your full attention to the feeling of your breath coming in and going out.
Third step is the biggie. Every time you try to do this, your mind is going to go crazy. You are going to start thinking about all sorts of stupid things like if you need a haircut, why you said that dumb thing to your boss, what’s for lunch, etc. Every time you notice that your mind is wandering, bring your attention back to your breath and begin again. This is going to happen over and over and over again and that is meditation.
By the way, you’re going to suck at this. Meditation is the hardest simple thing you’ll ever do. Dan agrees:
It’s not easy. You will “fail” a million times but the “failing” and starting over is succeeding. So this isn’t like most things in your life where, like if you can’t get up on water skis, you can’t do it. Here the trying and starting again, trying and starting again, that’s the whole game.
But do you need to be in the midst of meditation to get the improvements? Nope. Neuroplasticity to the rescue! Over time, meditation produces trait changes in the brain so that the effects persist.
From
…there are hints in the research that these changes are traitlike: they appear not simply during the explicit instruction to perceive the stressful stimuli mindfully but even in the “baseline” state, with reductions in amygdala activation as great as 50 percent. Such lessening of the brain’s stress reactions appears in response not simply to seeing the gory pictures used in the laboratory but also to more real-life challenges…
But getting your grey matter to seriously change itself takes time. A lot of time. Hundreds or thousands of hours of meditating. I know what you’re thinking:  I don’t have 10 years to sit cross-legged on a mountaintop. I have a job, pal.
I get it. What’s truly fascinating is that recent research has shown a tiny bit of meditation can actually be used acutely — in the moment when you’re having a push-the-red-button-level emergency.
From
As these stressful thoughts were presented, the patients used either of two different attentional stances: mindful awareness of their breath or distraction by doing mental arithmetic. Only mindfulness of their breath both lowered activity in the amygdala— mainly via a faster recovery— and strengthened it in the brain’s attentional networks, while the patients reported less stress reactivity.
When you’re feeling stressed out, when it seems like a hijack might be coming, just do a “mini-meditation.” By focusing on your breath for a few moments you can get some of the long term benefits of meditation right when you need them.
(To learn more about how to meditate from Dan Harris, click here.)
We’ve covered a lot. Time for the yous to gather ’round. Let’s pull it all together and learn how the modular vision of the brain along with mindfulness can lead to that little thing called wisdom…
Sum Up
Here’s what you and you and you need to know about how to be more mindful:
There are many yous: Like apps on a smartphone, different systems in your brain with different goals can take control at different times, which is why you can behave so inconsistently.
Feelings are what give a module control: You get worked up by what your buddy said and suddenly your brain is hijacked by “Angry Birds” instead of “Words With Friends.”
Meditation can prevent hijacking: Over time, meditation can rewire your brain to be less impulsively reactive and allow you to thoughtfully respond to your feelings.
Mini-meditations help in the moment: By focusing on your breath during a tense moment you can get some of the long term effects of meditation right when you need them.
Less reactivity means fewer hijacks which leads to better decisions and more alignment between thought and action. Over time, that leads to wisdom. Neuroscience PhD and meditation advocate  put it best:
On one level, wisdom is nothing more profound than an ability to follow one’s own advice.
You don’t want your internal Grubhub app taking charge when you’re on a diet. And you certainly don’t want that Tinder app active when you’re with someone you know isn’t right for you. (Swipe left!)
Observe a couple breaths. Stay calm so you can get back to your home screen. Choose the right app for the situation.
Trust me: you don’t want Natasha running the show.

New Neuroscience Reveals 2 Rituals That Will Make You More Mindful
*** Before we commence with the festivities, I wanted to thank everyone for helping my first book become a Wall Street Journal bestseller. To check it out, click here. *** You want to get to work but instead you surf the internet. Stay with me… Over 1000 years ago Buddhism — where mindfulness techniques come from — said that there is no singular “you.” The “self” does not exist. Sound like crazy nonsense? I’m with you. (All 27 of you, actually.) But here’s the thing… Both neuroscience and psychology are starting to agree. Sometimes you don’t act like you because there is no singular “you.” And this positively perplexing proposition holds the answer to why you do dumb things, procrastinate, can’t follow through on your goals, and why some days it seems like everyone – including you — is a total hypocrite.
What we’re talking about is the cutting edge theory of the “modular mind.” (Okay, it’s old news to Buddhist monks but cutting edge to the rest of us.) The human brain wasn’t built top to bottom as a single project like Apple builds a computer. It evolved over millions of years in a very messy fashion. Various systems (or “modules”) came about to drive you to accomplish different tasks like seeking food, fighting, reproduction, etc. But here’s the problem… They were never integrated.
You’re like a walking live performance of Pixar’s “Inside Out.” Now this isn’t as alien as it might sound. When you do something while drunk or tired what’s the phrase you often pull out? “I wasn’t myself.” Yeah. Exactly. Upside: you can now use the royal “we” to describe yourself. (To learn more about the science of a successful life, check out my new book here.) So how do we prevent hijacking by the wrong module at the wrong time and make better decisions? First we need to learn how those inappropriate modules get hold of your steering wheel…
Feelings. Nothing More Than Feelings.
Whichever module has the most emotional kick attached to it at any point wins the competition to be “you.” You see a pizza commercial and it stirs up feelings of hunger and that “Grubhub” app hijacks control.
Whatever. You get the point.) You’re often a slave to your emotional reactions to the world around you. You react to your context with feelings, those give one module more power than another, and that one hijacks decision-making in your brain… Until new feelings are stirred up and another module takes charge.
(To learn the 3 secrets from neuroscience that will make you emotionally intelligent, click here.) So how can we replace your automatic transmission with a nice stick shift?
