Note
hey I really love your blog and you have me interested in reading some medieval lit. I don't know if you've ever answered this before, but any book recommendations for must reads or for people first starting to get into medieval lit (esp. since I know it can get very hefty)
i feel like i must’ve answered this at some point but i can’t find it so maybe i didn’t, maybe it was on my old blog, who knows
it kind of depends what kind of medieval lit you’re interested in to be honest! i mean, my specialism is irish lit, so i have a lot of recs for that, but i know... fuck all about middle english (okay, that’s not entirely true, sir orfeo is great), and i am def not the person to ask about old english bc i haven’t even got around to reading beowulf yet
some texts i guess
the táin [irish] - carson or kinsella’s translation is your best bet
early irish myths and sagas [irish] - ed and trans jeffrey gantz. ignore most of what he says in his intros to the stories, a lot of it’s outdated, but the translations are solid enough
tales of the elders of ireland [irish] - ed and trans. dooley and roe
the mabinogion [welsh] - go for the sioned davies translation, it’s the best and most recent
beowulf [old english] - i’ve been told heaney’s translation is pretty good tho not literal/academic. i wouldn’t know.
the poetic edda [old norse] - caroline larrington’s translation is the best i think
snorra edda / the prose edda [old norse] - literally can’t remember who translated the copy i have and it’s not in the same city as me right now, RIP
lais of marie de france [medieval french] - don’t have a rec’d translation but they’re good. bisclavret is my fave. guigemar gives me sad ace-spec feelings.
the knight of the cart and the knight of the lion [medieval french] by chrétien de troyes - these are my faves of the four romances anyway. i guess you could read erec et enide and perceval also but. eh.
lancelot of the lake [medieval french] - ah yes the non-cyclic old french prose romance lancelot du lac. sadly only available in abbreviated translation by corin corley, also, out of print so secondhand is your best bet unless you can read old french. very gay tho. i enjoy.
uhhhh that’s pretty much all i got right now, it is very much a non-exhaustive list (as you will note it contains zero middle english). have tried to go for the things that are easy to get hold of in non-academic editions so they’re not crazy expensive. some of these are actually v cheap on kindle if that’s your jam.
hope this helps a bit!
ETA:
Tumblr media
if you are looking for snorra edda (snedda) you can find it here
also i should add that there are lots of translations of irish texts at CELT (corpus of electronic texts): https://celt.ucc.ie/transpage.html. they just tend to be older translations (bc they’re out of copyright) so not necessarily as accessible, the books i listed above are kind of. the easiest way in.

FE4 Suzuki Novelization Translation - Chapter 7 Part 1
If you would like to start from the beginning, read a missed part, etc., click here!
FE Game Script Translations - FE Novel Translations - Original FE Support Conversations - Ko-fi
T/N: Chapter 7′s title completely spoils one of the big events of the chapter, so I won’t be putting it in my tumblr posts like I usually do. You can check out the Google Doc, where I could hide it. Highlight the Table of Contents page to see it. In the event that this is your first experience with FE4′s plot, read the title after Chapter 7 Part 3. Those who have played FE4, it is of course nothing you don’t already know.

Chapter 7
Part 1
Leading the Nordion soldiers who had been fighting with Sigurd’s army, Eldigan caught up with Chagall, and took on the role of the king’s rear guard.
The only thing on his mind was the survival of the Dominion of Augustria. He felt that it was his duty to protect his king, and was determined to do whatever it took to keep Chagall safe.
The first thing he did when he arrived at Madino Castle was encourage Chagall to make an official declaration that the capital city had moved. The Cross Knights scattered across Augustria to deliver the message to each house.
The declaration also stated that no occupying armies would be allowed within the country, with Sigurd’s being the only exception.
Each town and city publicly posted the notice, and as the royalty and knights of each house read it, they slowly gathered in Madino. Within three months, Madino had power and influence that none could overlook.
Madino Castle had originally been built by the northern pirates. Though it was called a castle, it looked almost exactly like a fort.
Chagall, used to living in luxury and idleness, could not stand life in Madino.
And it was Eldigan that irritated him most of all. When they first arrived in Madino, he had no one else to rely on, but once the number of people in his royal court increased, he thought of Eldigan as nothing more than an obnoxious man who did nothing more than oppose him.
He didn’t believe that the Grannvalian army would pull out after a year, either.
‘Even if that prince of Chalphy did make a promise to Eldigan, that doesn’t mean the king in Balhalla will honor it. I may disagree with Eldigan, but I need him to take back Augusty and ensure victory against the Grannvalians…’ He thought, then ordered Eldigan to protect Silvali Castle, under the pretence of needing him there to keep control over Augusty.
With Eldigan out of the way, there was no one around that would protest against him, and his life returned to what it had been like in Augusty.
If he was going to go back to war, he knew it would have to happen before the brunt of the Grannvalian Army returned home, and quickly began to prepare for battle.
He was partially right.
-
Sigurd proposed time and time again to withdraw, as Augustria had ceased all hostile actions towards Grannvale.
However, the only order he received from Balhalla told him to continue the occupation in Grannvale, and maintain public order.
After some time, Balhalla dispatched a few officials to visit Sigurd and his army in Augustria. Since Prince Kurt was in Isaach, the only officials left were members of Duke Reptor’s anti-prince faction. Under the guise that they’d come to keep their fellow Grannvalians entertained, they investigated Sigurd, and reported every little detail back to Duke Reptor.
They not only learned that he’d allowed the Augustrian king to escape and transfer the capital, but also that he was hiding the Isaach’s Prince Shannan…
Since Sigurd was so confident in his loyalty to Grannvale, he felt no shame about what he was doing. However, those who didn’t share his views couldn’t help but think he was harboring ideas of rebellion.
Those who disagreed with proposals couldn’t rule out the idea that he was ignoring the government and trying to run things all on his own.
-
Despite the increasing tension between Madino and Balhalla, Augusty enjoyed a period of peace.
The members of Sigurd’s army, who’d been fighting for so long, cherished the peace and quiet of those few months. Those calm days allowed many of their relationships to develop.
Jamke and Aideen vowed to marry each other once the war was over for good.
At first, they kept their engagement secret. Aideen felt that they couldn’t openly share their happiness while war still continued on. They maintained a pure relationship, and only went so far as to hold hands. But it was clear to anyone who saw them together that they were madly in love.
Deirdre saw how worried Azel, Midir, and many of the other soldiers were for their chance at ever wooing Aideen, and suggested to Aideen that she make the engagement public.
“It would lift a huge weight off their shoulders.” Deirdre argued.
Aideen agreed with her, and followed her suggestion.
The Aideen fans accepted the shock from the confirmation that their suspicions were correct, and many gave up their feelings for her right away. Those who didn’t, told themselves that they would.
-
Beowulf continued to teach Lachesis swordsmanship every single day.
With the blood of Dark Knight Hezul flowing through her veins, her skills increased very quickly. When she realized that she was getting better, she was very happy. But he still forbade her from fighting in real combat.
“If raw skill was all that mattered, then you’d already be as good as I am. But you’re still lacking in experience. If you fought right now, then you would die.”
Lachesis was dissatisfied, but appreciated his honesty, and gradually came to trust him more and more.
Beowulf liked to move fast with women. Once she showed trust in him, he felt the urge to confess to her. She might reject him at first, but with a little convincing, he was sure he could make her his.
However, he was truly in love with her, and didn’t want to take any chances.
When he looked at her, he always thought of Eldigan.
Eldigan was the perfect knight. No matter how hard he tried, he could never be like him...
‘I’m just a lowly mercenary. Eldigan and I were born and raised differently. I know that I could never be like him, no matter how hard I tried. But knowing that, and giving up, are two different things. No matter how much I love her, if I tell her, then I’ll prove that I’m nothing more than a lowly mercenary. I will protect her in Eldigan’s place. That’s the path I will take to become a knight.’
No one could tell what Beowulf’s true feelings for her were, so Dew gave Lachesis a sword that he’d “picked up” somewhere.
“What’s this sword for?”
“Hm, well, I found it over there, and have no interest in usin’ it, so I thought I’d give it to you!”
“Wow, thank you!” She said, and unsheathed the sword.
It didn’t look like a very well-crafted sword at all. But it wasn’t supposed to be. It was called the “Thief Sword,” and while it had a mysterious power, it wasn’t meant to inflict lethal damage to an opponent.
Unfortunately, Dew hadn’t chosen the right person for the sword. Lachesis had never once wished for money in her entire life.
-
Once Lex had seen Ayra fight, he quickly developed an interest in her style. When he tried to talk to her, she was blunt with him, but that only made him all the more interested in her. He’d never met anyone as mature and refined as her in all Grannvale. When he was with her, he felt like a man visiting a foreign world for the first time, and quickly fell in love with her.
However, Lex was a sarcastic person, and because of that, he couldn’t bring himself to confess his feelings directly. After much deliberation, he asked a weapons merchant in Augusty to go to Chalphy and bring him back the finest sword he could find.
The merchant returned with an extremely expensive blade known as the “Brave Sword.” Lex did not mind the price, and was satisfied with it.
He hid the sword in his cape, went out to the castle courtyard, and waited for her to come by.
Three days later, he finally had his chance.
“What’s up, Ayra?” He called out to her nonchalantly.
“Oh, Lex… what do you need?”
“Ouch, you’re as blunt as ever.”
“I’m busy, so if you don’t need me for anything, I’ll be going.”
“Wait! I found something really good, but I don’t need it… I was just wondering what to do with it, when you walked by. So, I just thought, ‘Hey, why don’t I give it to her…?’”
“If it’s powder or perfume, give it to some other girl. I have no need for such things.”
“Oh? Not even this?” He took out the Brave Sword, and held it up in front of her eyes.
“...Wow, is that what I think it is…?”
“It’s a famous blade known as the Brave Sword. I thought maybe you’d heard of it before.”
“So this is what a Brave Sword looks like. ...It’s so beautiful.”
When he motioned for her to take it, she grabbed it as if it was pulling her to it.
“I’m best with axes, so I don’t need it. And you seem to like it, so feel free to take it. See you later…”
Ayra marveled over the beauty of the sword for a while longer.
By the time she looked up to thank him, he was already gone and heading back into the castle.
As she watched him leave, she whispered, “Lex...”
That gesture planted a seed of love in her heart that soon began to sprout.
-
For Sylvia, the subtle behaviors of people in love were easier for her to read, than a child’s expressions were for their mother.
So when she saw the way Erinys looked at Lewyn, she knew instantly how Erinys felt about the prince.
‘She’s in love with him… but hasn’t realized it yet.’
Sylvia liked Lewyn, too, but she had no interest in him beyond dating him to keep herself from getting bored. It wasn’t love.
‘I could never know such a pure love.’
She was a bit jealous of Erinys, but not envious. Instead, she wanted to help make their pure love blossom.
‘Lewyn always has girls fawning over him... But I can’t let him pretend he doesn’t really know how she feels!’
However, she knew that talking to Lewyn directly would have the opposite effect.
‘The only thing I can do is edge her a little closer towards realizing her true feelings.’
Sylvia called out to Erinys from a corner of the courtyard, and made a serious face.
Tumblr media
“Hey, Erinys! Do you, by any chance… like Lewyn?”
“What!? ...I… ...I…” Erinys’ face turned bright red, and she stuttered.
“I just think he’s… an important person to Silesse...”
“Yeah, so you’re nothing in comparison.”
“N-No, I’m not…”
“Then can I date him?”
“S-Sure, I don’t mind…”
“Really? You’re not just forcing yourself to say that?”
“N-No, I’m not. Why would I be…?”
“I dunno. Well, if you say so, then I’m gonna take Prince Lewyn for myself!”
“Oh, but… the next queen of Silesse should be someone refined, like Queen Rahna.”
“So I’m not good enough? Is that what you're saying? That’s so mean!”
“N-No… I didn’t mean…”
“Go ahead, you can be honest with me. I don’t know what kind of person Queen Rahna is, but if you’re telling me it’s okay for me to go after him, then I’m not complaining!”
“I-Is that what I said?”
“Not directly, but you implied it. Anyway, remember what we talked about here today!” Sylvia said, then ran off, leaving Erinys all alone. ‘That should be enough to open her eyes a little!’
-
Time passed, and on the day that the first flowers of the year bloomed, signaling the coming of spring, Deirdre went into labor and gave birth to a baby boy with the same dark blue hair as Sigurd.
Sigurd named his son Seliph.
On that same day, the Augustrian royals held a war meeting in Madino, discussing strategies to recapture Augusty Castle.
And in Balhalla, the news spread that Prince Kurt had been assassinated while traveling home from Isaach.

Chapter 12: The Werewolf
My next date that was listed on the schedule was with Beowulf. I wondered what the date was going to consist of since I didn’t really know his personality well except what was on the surface. With Cassi and Danton, I could at least guess what was going to happen. Cassi did outright admit his date plans. The reading date with Danton was agreed on beforehand as well. However, I haven’t spoken to Beo since the levitation accident.
Without much knowledge as to what we would be doing, I dressed in something nice yet comfortable. A lilac sweater dress with black leggings should be nice enough for any kind of date, right?
I eventually heard a knock on the door and I took a deep breath. An equally nice yet kind of casually dressed Beo beamed at me once I opened the door, his tail wagging with joy. He wore jeans and a white button down, a green baseball style jacket over his shoulder. His usually shaggy hair was fixed to be nice and neat as well.
He gave an exaggerated bow and held out his hand for me to take. “Hello, Anise! Are you ready for our first date?”
I gave a small smile back and hesitantly took his hand. “As ready as I’ll ever be. Am I dressed appropriately for our date?”
He looked back up at me with those dark green eyes of his and paid me a compliment. “Yeah, and you look lovely too. I planned to just have a simple stroll with you to the park in town. It’s a bit of a ways, but I don’t mind carrying you if I have to. So, what do you think?”
“I think that sounds nice. It is a bit chilly outside though. Let me grab my jacket and then-”
Before I could finish my sentence, Beo took off the jacket that hung on his shoulder and put it around my own shoulders. I noticed a faint pink creep along his cheeks as he did this, the smile he had just making the blush more noticable. “Here. You can have my jacket for the day. I’m usually pretty warm, so I won’t need it.”
I felt my own cheeks grow a little warm and I pulled the jacket closer around me. A short laugh escaped from my lips as I replied. “Don’t you think this gesture is a little early into the date?”
“Is it? I’ve never been on a date before, but I’ve seen romance movies. The guy is always supposed to give his girl his jacket if she gets cold. Does it matter when exactly that happens?”
I blushed even harder as he said “his girl,” implying that I was already his. It was true that I was supposed to be his girl for however long the date would last, but it made me feel weird thinking about it. It was the fuzzy kind of weird feeling. “I-I suppose it doesn’t. Sh-Shall we get going then?”
Beo began to wag his tail once again and he took my hand back in his. “Yeah! Let’s go!”
His hand was big and warm, filling me with more of that fuzzy feeling. I followed him out of my room and out of the house, nearing the dirt road that led to the town. While we walked hand in hand, I began to think about some questions to ask Beo to get to know him better. “So, Beo. how well did you know my grandparents?”
“Oh, Rosemary and Joel? I watched her practice magic and I watched movies with Joel. I would also escort Rosemary into the town whenever she needed something. I would say that I knew them pretty well, but not as well as I would’ve liked. They taught me some pretty good life lessons while I helped them with some basic chores around the house too. Always be kind, show respect, and take some time to appreciate the beauty around me. I tend to think and move pretty fast unless I’m seriously focused on something, so that last piece of advice is hard for me to follow sometimes.” He explained to me.
Once again, I was surprised at how much of an impact my grandparents seemed to have on everyone. It was nice to know that my grandmother had a companion to walk her into town other than my grandfather. Beo seemed to be a good boy. “I see. Thank you for telling me this.”
“What about you, Anise? Did they tell you anything valuable?” Beo inquired, his head tilting along with his wolf ears. It was actually really cute how they tilted. It made me want to pet his head.
“Well, I learned a lot about magic and my family tree from my grandmother. Meanwhile, my grandfather taught me more natural magic such as garden-keeping and cooking. I also remember watching some documentaries with him when I was younger. As for advice, I was taught the same things you did. Treat others the way you want to be treated, learn to stop and smell the roses every once in a while, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.” I answered thoughtfully. Beo looked at me with amazement, his eyes sparkling like I just told him an impressive secret.
“Wow, it sounds like you were close with your grandparents.”
I then gave a sad smile. “Not as much as I would’ve liked to be. I wish I got to know them better, especially near the end of their years.”
“Speaking about the end of their years, I am curious about something. They both passed away at the same time. Was it just a coincidence that it happened? Or was there some sort of magic involved? I may not be that smart, but I did notice the timing of their passings. And I don’t think it’s common for couples to pass away at the same time together.” He suddenly asked.
I wasn’t too surprised by his question. Beo seemed like the type to ask any question he was curious about without hesitation. It was in his nature to be curious. That much I have gathered from our encounters. I also gathered that losing my grandparents was somewhat like losing his masters for him. Of course he would notice the timing. “When a powerful witch falls in love and marries someone, then their souls become connected. To a certain extent, they can feel what the other is feeling at all times. When one of them passes away, then the other will as well within the same time. It’s a natural spell and bond that occurs that we call ‘Eternal Soulmates’ which every powerful witch can experience. My mothers are under this spell.”
“That actually sounds kind of nice. Both of the souls don’t have to experience heartache in the end and they pass on together. Will you be under that spell as well once you find your soulmate?” Beo continued to ask.
I nodded. “Someday, yes. I come from a family of powerful witches and I would say that I hold quite a bit of power to be influenced by the natural spell as well. That is, if I ever find my soulmate.”
“You could always marry me if you don’t find one.” He beamed, obviously not thinking much about it at first. I grew a little wide-eyed and blushed at his offer.
“Y-Yeah. Thank you, Beo. . .”
“No problem! I like you a lot, Anise. I want to be someone you can count on. If you’ll have me, of course.” He revealed quite casually. I took his offer to be friendly above romantic though. Beo seemed a little naive, naive enough to not know that his words may be taken in a romantic way. It did make my heart flutter a bit, but I was pretty sure that that wasn’t his goal.
I gave a shy smile as well as a nod. “Right. Thank you again, Beo. I really do appreciate the offer. I’ll be sure to come to you whenever I need your help.”
We continued to walk, getting to know each other. Beo was actually quite funny and easy to talk to. His curious nature was contagious, allowing me to feel free to ask any question I felt like. Eventually we entered the town and walked along the sidewalk leading to the park. There were a few people on the street, enjoying their day strolling around just like we were. Before being noticed by anyone, Beo reached behind him and pulled a hat off of one of his belt loops, something I didn’t notice until now. He then put it on his head to cover his wolf ears.
Soon enough, we approached a small park surrounded by maple trees that displayed the most vivid fall colors I’ve ever seen. Reds, yellows, and oranges graced their large leaves, some falling silently to the ground. My breath was absolutely taken away. I always loved the fall foliage. Beo was just as taken by the scene from the way he stared up at the branches.
“Beautiful, isn’t it? Makes me wanna rake up all the leaves that fall and jump in the pile though.” He laughed, squeezing my hand in the process. I gave a little giggle of my own as we continued to walk under the branches.
“Hey, Beo? I have another question. How did you get cursed to stay in this town?” I finally asked. He held his chin with his free hand as he tried to remember.
“I remember encountering a woman when I was pretty young. I would say that I was ten at the time. I wandered into this town. I didn’t have any parents or guardians at the time. I had to hide in alleys and steal food from the garbage. That’s just how it was. One day, I ended up at a diner and saw this woman order a large amount of food. I was hungry and I figured that one sandwich out of everything she ordered wouldn’t hurt. As long as I was faster than her, I wouldn’t be caught. That’s what I thought anyways.”
“I was caught immediately. I would have never guessed that the old lady could be so fast. She called me a thieving poor puppy and said I needed to be punished. I then felt like there was a chain around my waste. Not fastened to anything in particular, but it weighed me down to this town. The feeling is still present. I never tried to leave the town. I just know that I can’t. The woman also explained to me how I could never leave. That was when she turned me into a werewolf too.”
“After wandering around some more, I came across your grandmother who took me in. I’ve lived in that house with her and Joel for ten years now. They saved me from being stuck on the streets. I owed them my life.”
I listened carefully to his story, wondering once again if this was the same woman that cursed Danton and Cassius. It was also surprising how long he’s been with my grandparents. How did my grandparents manage to keep him a secret from me all this time? He was only a year older than me after all.
“I remember visiting the house a few times after I turned nine. Where were you hiding within the house? And did you know about me back then?” I continued to question.
He gave me another toothy grin along with a nod. “Of course! I was instructed to hide in the attic at the time with Danton, but I could hear you play and interact with your grandparents. It sounded like so much fun, but I wasn’t allowed to meet you yet. To this day, I don’t know why. But I knew you somewhat.”
I took this information in, unsure of what to do with it. Why did my grandparents hide all the monsters from me? That was something I would probably never get the answer to.
A hand suddenly landed on my head to begin to pet me. I looked up at Beowulf to see a comforting smile and soft eyes. “Hey, as long as we know each other now, right? While I would’ve been nice to see you back then, I’m just happy that I can see you now. Do you feel the same way?”
That familiar heat came over my cheeks as he continued to pet my head. A few onlookers smiled and whispered, no doubt gossiping about us being a cute couple or something like that. That was what I thought at least. “Y-Yes. I-I’m happy that I know you, Beo.”
Our date continued on, walking through the park, admiring the leaves, and talking. I learned that Beo’s favorite color was green, his favorite food was steak, he liked to go on morning runs, but also deeper things like how he’s been an orphan since he was four and he ran away from home when he was eight. Despite the darker past, Beo was bright and cheerful as ever, his tail wagging so hard to the point where he adjusted himself to sit on it.
Before we knew it, the sunset came. Sitting on a park bench, holding hands with him, it made me feel fuzzy again. The way the orange sunset contrasted against the orange leaves in the trees made for a brilliant end to the date. As I looked forward, I commented on the scene before us. “It’s really like something out of a painting. Beautiful.”
“Yeah. Beautiful. . .” Beo repeated. However, I felt his eyes trained on my instead of the sunset. I turned my head and met his gaze, the heat on my cheeks growing for what I hoped was the final time for the day.
“Anise, I think I finally get what Rosemary meant when she told me to stop and appreciate the beauty around me. I don’t think she was talking about nature specifically. I think she was talking about you.” He admitted, pink falling over his own face.
Instinctively, I turned my eyes away from him to try to hide my blushing face behind my hair. Now, I wasn’t sure if he meant things in a friendly way or in a romantic way. A hand came under my chin and guided me to look back up at him. Slowly, he began to lean forward.
My heart felt like it would beat out of my chest. Was this really going to be my first kiss? I shut my eyes tight as he continued to lean forward. A soft pair of lips touched my forehead gently before pulling away. Now I felt a bit foolish, but also relieved that he didn’t take my first kiss. Not that I didn’t want to kiss him, but because it wouldn’t feel right with all the other dates I have to go on. I couldn’t even say that I loved him yet.
“I could sense your hesitance, Anise. It’s okay. I’ll only kiss you on the lips when you ask me to. I meant what I said earlier too. I really do like you. I wouldn’t mind it if we became soulmates one day. I would actually really like it if we had a strong bond like ‘Eternal Soulmates.’” He promised.
My heart skipped a beat when he confessed this. Just the way the sunlight fell across his features paired with the way he looked at me made him seem less like a cute puppy and more like a handsome man. I gave him a soft smile, squeezed his hand, and got up from the bench. “Thank you, Beo. For being patient and taking me on this wonderful date. Shall we go home now?”
“Yeah, let’s go back before it gets too dark.”
We walked back home, the stars and moon just emerging by the time we reached the front door. Before heading inside, Beo took off his hat and leaned down a bit. “You know, I could use a little pet if that’s okay with you?”
I couldn’t help but giggle at how cute he was at that moment. My hand extended out and gave him a pet between his ears, his hair still soft and fluffy despite being styled with hair product. I wouldn’t have been surprised if he sensed that I wanted to pet his hair earlier. Once I had my fill, I took off his jacket to hand back to him. He gingerly took it from me. His own hand then reached out to pet my own head.
“This was a wonderful date, Anise! Good job! I think I’m going to take one last stroll around the house before heading inside. See you later!” He finally said goodbye before putting on his jacket, leaving me to take his stroll. Of course a werewolf like him wanted to go for another walk.
I headed inside and sighed, happy to have gone on another successful date. From the kitchen I could smell a stew being made for dinner. After composing myself, I headed towards the dining room to enjoy a warm meal. ________________________________________________________________ Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11

Which resources do you have that aren’t in English? I was thinking maybe we could ask a follower or a few to translate since many people can understand different languages? There has to be a way to make things more accessible. Also, a professor told me sometimes if you email the authors of research behind paywalls, they can send it to you for free. Do you think that might help with some of them?
Iappreciate the offers I occasionally get to translate things but I’malso aware that it’s not something I can really check. Opensourcing things can make them more accessible but- Well basically I’maware that translation is a difficult thing to do and it’s easy toskew the meaning  of the text.
I’vehad a few of my fanfics translated by people who liked them and Ireally clearly remember some of the conversations around that- thedouble meanings words have in particular languages are difficult toconvey.
I’vealso read a few of the arguments about translating the Eddas. AndBeowulf. And the Quran.
Alleg’smemoir is translated from French and yet the original language shinesthrough, the distinction between ‘tu’ and ‘vous’ is textuallyimportant. His entire interaction with his torturers could easily bemisrepresented by an amateur translation. Not on purpose. Notmaliciously. But in this context nuance is important, the exactmeaning of words in the original language is important.
Ialso don’t feel comfortable asking people to do this when they maywell have a lot on their plate, I can’t easily reimburse them and Ican’t be sure they’re not under age.
Iknow younger people are extremely capable but I don’t know what allof these accounts contain so I can’t warn people as to the contextexcept in a general way. And I feel particularly uncomfortable aboutthe idea of under age people being exposed to content they’re notprepared for.
Sooverall- I just feel safer saving for the translation services. I’min an international university town. There are a lot of professionaltranslators here and that’s something I’m looking in to. Some ofthem also have backgrounds in international law, which isparticularly useful.
Italso means I can reference the translation itself in a way that’sacademically recognised. That doesn’t just help me, it potentiallyhelps others in the field in a way that a free amateur translationwould not.
So-Thank you, I do appreciate it, but I think a professional translationwould be better for both the blog and the wider community ofresearchers.
