Liam Saturday September 16

As his job at Pasta's Place only started at 3 pm, the young lad decided to go for a swim before. During the weekend, the pool was open to all the students, but thanks to the induction seminar of several fraternities and sororities, there were only a few people. Liam put his swimming trunks, his swimming cap (he hated this thing) (seriously, it was like having a jellyfish on the head) (yeah, he already had a died jellyfish on the head, long story), and went to the pool. Once ready, he dived and started a serie of lengths. He let time pass, focused on his performance. He wasn't as good as Rebecca (she was like a sport warrior, and he suspected her to be an alien hiden in this body in order to win the Olympics in two year), but eventually, he felt satisfied (and exhausted) enough to stop. However, at this exact moment, he noticed a small blonde girl reading a book in the tiers. Barbara. Liam stared at her discreetly (at least the most discreetly he can). She wasn't really different since 11th grade. Short (like 151 cm, or 4'11"), thin, wearing casual clothes, and reading. Yeah, I guess it's the same Barbara... Next to her, a brown girl was looking to her phone, seemingly bored. Shall I go talk to her ? After all, she had been his friend back in highschool, and he had been sad when she had left them. Going out of the pool, he headed towards the rows of seats, indecisive. C'mon Liam, you know her, and she'll just ask you some usual news, like what are you doing, how are you, how old are you, or not, and how are you relatives... No way, I can't answer this last question. He stopped next to the tiers, and looked at her. She was so quiet, so... unchanged. Why did she left their highschool ? Maybe she doesn't want me to know... Yeah, so I shloudn't talk to her. (Did Liam already tell how bad he was to find pretext ?)

"Dude." spoke someone to him. "Are you coveting my girlfriend or my sister ?"

Almost stunned, the young lad turned towards the boy who talked to him. In swimming trunks too, he was wet and sported a curious face, a mix between anger and entertainement. Liam blinked for at least two minutes, and then point Barbara and the other girl out.

"You're speaking about them ?"

The boy nodded slowly. He wasn't really tall, but well-built, with an hard six pack and a strong chest. Besides, his face was quite delicate, with black short hair and oceanic blue eyes.

"The blonde one is my girl, the brown one my sister." he explained with patience, like if Liam was dull-witted. "And you were looking at them."

His voice was... unctuous. Liam blushed. (Blushed a lot).

"I was not... Hum, I'm not... just... forget me."

Without waiting for an answer, he left the pool almost running. What an awkward situation... Now he'll think I'm stalker. He didn't find the courage to tell him the truth. In fact, this boy reminded him someone. Well, anyway, I have to go to work, I couldn't have lose time to talk with him. (Did Liam tell how bad he was to invent pretext ?)

"You're missing something man ! It's like heaven, less the rules about pudeur."

The young freshman smiled. Nick told him something similar earlier this day concerning their own induction seminar for the fraternity Theta Omicron. But sadly, he had to work. Not everyone could have a scolarship, and not everyone had parents wealthy enough to cover the costs.

"Anyway." began again his bestfriend trought the phone. "Regarding lessons, let me tell you journalism is as good as I expected."

"Nice. It's nice."

Nate hesitated lengthily before leaving to join the best university for his studies. Liam always encouraged him to move, despite the fact they would not see each other for several month by doing so. He have a great career waiting for him. That's part of my job to help him succeed.

"What about ya Liam ? You're not speaking much."

"Sorry... I'm preparing for work right now, and I think you already know everything."

"Seriously ? Nothing new ? What about this girl... Rebecca, is she like Shirley ?"

"Not that much... Imagine Shirley was like a lamb, well Rebbie's a wolf."

His best friend laughed, and Liam felt a warmth fill his heart. He missed this laugh.

"Did you have any news from your sis' ?" asked suddenly his friend. "How's she doing ?"

"I'm sorry mate but I have to hung up." answered quickly Liam. "Judy is waiting for me, and you know how mean she is when I'm late. See you soon buddy."

He closed his phone without listenning to the reply. What am I doing... He just lied. But he couldn't say to his bestfriend the truth. He didn't want Nate to know that he hadn't contacted his sister yet. And after all, Judy was angry when he was late. (Angry meaning she would laugh and told him to stop watching the clouds while walking). (A lot of people thought he was watching the clouds while walking, but it wasn't true). (Not totally true).

Around 11:30 pm, Liam could at last make a break from the dishes. He went to the staff room, took a plate of pasta and sat next to Judy, who was finishing her diner. I wonder... How did she managed to do this ungrateful job for several months ? The young lad was worn out. He was hot, his hands and legs were shivering, and he hated the noise in the kitchen which he called Hell Kitchen. Furthermore, he had smell the flavor of pasta the whole evening, and he started to be quite repulsed (but paradoxically, when it come to eat, his stomach really enjoyed these evil pasta).

"He's so cute, I would love to meet him in real life." stated Judy.

Surprised, Liam watched around him before realizing she was speaking about the TV. Most of the worker were men, and they liked sport. Consequently, the telly released all the sporting events. Right now, two interviewers were questionning a soccer player and... Liam opened his eyes wide. Ginger, with a strangely cold blue look, and simply handsome, the player was Raphaël. I can't believe it ! Judy stared at him, curious, and asked :

"Liam ? What's wrong ?"

"I... I know him. He was in my highschool in 11th grade." he explained. "He's my friend. I didn't expect him to become so popular."

"Are you joking ?" Judy exclaimed. "Raphaël Muller is like THE man all the girl are dreaming about. He's so cute, so clever... so... Are you really his friend ?"

"Of course I am. Why would I lie ?"

"Liam, you have to help me. I want to meet him. I know he's not interested in girl but... I really want."

She was overexcited. The young freshman didn't know what to say. She looked so happy, so excited by the idea. But could he just call Raphaël and ask him to come ? Plus, he probably hates me now... After what I did...

"Calm down Judy." he eventually said carefully. "Listen, I'll see what I can do but... he's quite famous and busy I guess, so I can't promise anything."

She nodded restlessly and Liam realized he may have done a mistake... But I'm always heading for a disaster anyway... As mom would say : My lord, what went wrong with me ?

Rebecca Monday September 18

This morning, during the tutorial in mathematic, the professor announced they will have to make a projet by group of four, graded and quite important for their ranks. Hearing that, Rebecca looked to Liam and Nick and gulped. If I'm working with them, I can consider I'm alone on this... I need to find another group quickly.

"Hey Rebbie, I guess you're working with us ?" asked suddenly Nick. "We just have to find a fourth member, that's it ?"

Damnit. (Just, she fully appreciated these two boys, but... They definitely weren't hard-worker.) (A geek and a... simple-minded, they couldn't be hard-worker). But she was too polite to decline. To be honest, I don't have any pretext to decline...

"You'll see, it will be fun." added Nick. "We just have to wake up Liam, and to find someone, and we can start."

While speaking, he nudged his friend, and looked around. Rebecca sighed, and did the same. (Yeah, she nudged Liam too). We need someone who'll help me efficiently. A girl would be perfect. Nonetheless, the only person she noticed was a hunky brown boy writing something on his book. She decided to try her luck, and came closer.

"Hi mate. I'm Rebecca, and here are Liam and Nick. We're looking for a fourth member. Are you interested ?"

The freshman raised his head towards her, and she gladly noted he was handsome. Not really her kind of guy (because he wasn't taller than her), but handsome anyway.

"My name is Colton." he whispered with a sweet tone. "And yes, it would be cool to work with you."

He hardly finished his sentence that Liam, perfectly awoken, stood up and said :

"I gotta go to eat."

"What are ya talking about dude ?" asked Nick, surprised. "This tutorial ends in half an hour."

"Yeah, cool, whatever, I'm hungry. See you this afternoon."

He left them with agitation, nearly running to go outside. What the fuck was that ? He's even weirder than I thought. (She liked Liam, but this boy was so... special).

"I hope I didn't make him flee." smiled Colton.

Nick looked at him, and shrugged.

"Don't worry. It's normal with him. Every time you think you understood how he works, he does something new. Let's start this tutorial."

As he swallowed the last bite of his third burger, Rebecca looked at him with disgust, and then pushed her plate away. Jeezus, he makes me sick. Once the tutorial finished, Colton had left them to join his girlfriend, and she ended eating alone with Nick before her training. This one stuffed his face with so much gusto that she felt disgusted. How could he gobble this amount of junkfood without feeling sick ? Noticing she pushed her food back, he asked :

"Are you gonna eat this, or can I ?"

Rebecca stared at him for a minutes, and nodded slowly. He's not kidding... He will eat my leftovers too. She already had visited the boy's appartment, and she had saw the excessive presence of beers and greasy foods, but right now, she was astounded anyway. Nick raised an eye towards her and asked between two mouthfuls :

"What's wrong ?"

Rebecca hesistated. She was no one to judge. But Bob always told her alimentation was the key to an healthy life. He would have disapprove Nick's attitude, for sure.

"Are you not scared to gain weight by eating like this ?" she eventually questionned.

Nick polished the pasta she had took, and then belched with satisfaction.

"Do I look fat to you ?"

"I don't know, you're wearing baggy pants and a sweater."

The boy inclined onto the table, and whispered :

"I'll tell you a secret Rebbie. I'm not fat."

He then stood up straight and patted his belly with enjoyment.

"Besides, I don't care gaining a bit of weight." he continued. "Everyone is putting on pounds at the university, at least some. That's not a problem, and as far as I know, you're not fat for all that."

"Well, personally, I'll not gain weight. And I think people are gaining weight because the have less time for exercising, not because they stuff themselves like you."

"Are you disturbed when I'm eating ?" he asked with an ironic tone.

"Now you're asking it, yes I am."

"Good."

With a big smile, he stood up, and she lost him in the crowd. What the fuck is he planning exactly ? Jeezus, this boy drives me mad. She waited a moment before he came back with a new plate full of greasy food. Dumbstuck, she looked at him eyes wide open.

"What the fuck is that ?"

"I was still hungry, at least a bit, well, you know." he retorted mockingly.

"Will you seriously eat this ?"

"Why not heh ?"

He took a large mouthful of burger and moaned heavily intentionally. My god, this childish boy. Why am I still here ? Furious, she stood up and left after one last dirty look,.

Pete Thursday September 21 – Friday September 22

When he finished his length, the young lad looked towards Theo, expecting a congratulation, or whatever, but the swimteam captain was busy speaking to Liam. Again. This is the fifth time they are just alone together talking about god knows what. What the fuck the freshman have to say which was so interesting ? (Pete wasn't jealous, he just wondered). He dragged himself out of the water, and headed towards them slowly. I can't interrupt just like this... I must have something to say... but what ? He glanced at the duo, thinking. Liam was so close to the captain. Like if he wanted to touch his ass. Pete felt his anger grow. He already was annoyed by the relationship between his lover and Laura, he didn't need the handsome-but-stupid Liam as a bonus. Eventually, they ended their talk, and Theo went towards the pool to give advice, while the freshman looked thoughtfully at him. Why are you coveting him like this asshole ? Suddenly getting angry, Pete rushed Liam, and looked draggers at him.

"Dude, what were you asking to Theo ? Why are you hitting on him like this ?"

Crap ! What did I just said ?! He blushed, annoyed, but waited for an answer anyway. Nevertheless, the brown lad just glanced at him with a blank stare. Did he at least understood ? Eventually, after a moment which seemed an eternity, Liam blinked.

"Did you ask me something Pete ?" he questionned, totally spaced out.

Is he just dumb ? Well, at least he didn't remember the awkward sentence. The blond boy could start again in a more diplomatic way.

"I just wanted to know if you're coming to the tournament this weekend ?"

"No, I can't." answered Liam. "Theo already insisted way too much, so... are you gonna try your luck too ?"

"Well, if our captain bothered you I'll not dare to do the same..."

Pete didn't know if he needed to felt reassured or worried. Why Theo wanted so badly Liam, although he wasn't that good at swimming ? Maybe he dislikes me... I'm maybe not fulfilling his desire anymore. But he wasn't ready to gave up. He wanted so much the captain favors. How could he arouse his interest ?

"Dude, you look preoccupied." whispered Liam. "Are you sure everything's fine ?"

"Yeah, yeah. I was just thinking."

The next day, in the afternoon, Pete was now absolutely sure Theo lost interest in him. He didn't sneaked in his appartment during the night, and even didn't came in the morning after his private law lesson. He's ignoring me... The freshman didn't really know why, but he was determined to recover his lover. (He knew all this story was bad, because Theo was Laura's boyfriend, but he became addicted to the swimteam leader, and he wanted him). That was why he decided to talk with Theo closest relative, his bestfriend Bradley Chichao, an asian musician. He found him in the campus, near to the amphiteater C, and manifestly high. Pete already met him during the induction seminar of their fraternity, and he understood he was rarely clean. For all that, he had met Theo three year ago for the beginning of their studies. They had become roommate, and right now, Bradley was clearly the person knowing the most of swimteam captain. (Well, maybe except Laura, his girlfriend for two years, but Pete couldn't ask her how to please her boyfriend without being a bit freaky). Once close to Bradley, the freshman smiled.

"Hi dude. Can I ask you something ?"

The asian guy raised slowly his head and glanced at the newcomer. Once he realized who was talking to him, he blinked and answered with an apathetic tone :

"Sure. What do you want to know ?"

Pete hesitated for a moment. How could he said that without being creepy ? Hey Bradley, I want a piece of advice about how to fuck your roommate, can you help me ? He had to be more diplomatic. Maybe he could use Theo's relation with Laura to his advantage...

"Tell me, why Theo is loving that much his girlfriend ?"

Bradley looked at him, completly wide of the mark. He was definitely high.

"Theo's loving the fat side..." he whispered absent-mindedly. "The fatter, the better."

Pete looked at him, quite surprised. Did he just tell me exactly what I needed to hear ? Theo wanted him fatter. That was why he ignored him. I'm not sexy enough. But become fatter ? He didn't know what to think about it... And he decided to wait a bit before trying anything... After all, maybe he would be able to convince Theo without any changement... I have to give it a try.

okay so today felt like a week’s worth of events because god hates me and won’t let me rest. strap in folks because this was now slow ride and i’m here to vent.

(this ended up being so much longer than expected so i’m putting it under the cut)

so it’s finals and i have 3 finals and 1 video project in lieu of a final. so i was up until roughly 3:30am doing a majority of the work on our video project because the other group member who was doing most of the work along with me jumped ship last minute. so i edit 22 minutes of raw footage i have and give the rest of the group instructions on what i need from them. then the rest of the night is spent studying for my exam that i had at 7am this morning. 

i get what i need to get done and decided to do what i normally do which is go to sleep and then wake up early and do some more studying. i set 3 alarms on my phone for 15 minutes increments starting at 5:30 (the last one being at 6am) and i set my alarm clock on my desk for 6am as well giving me plenty of time for some last minute studying and to get ready and head to class. my dumb bitch ass wakes up to a clock that reads “7:08am.” my stupid hoe of a body slept through or somehow slept walked and turned off 4 fucking alarms!!!! 

i have never done cocaine, but waking up at 7:08am for a 7am examine probably creates a similar effect. i’m out the door before that clock even thinkg about changing to 7:09am. i grabbed my backpack (which thankfully i prepacked with everything i needed the night before), threw my keys and phone in my pocket, put a hat on and slip on shoes and ran out the door.

sonic the hedgehog and usain bolt got nothin on me in my anxiety fueled sprint to class. i end up getting to class at about 7:13am. thankfully my professor has a policy that if you arrive late to an exam, you can still take it as long as the first person has not finished and turned in there exam.

i get my exam and materials, sit down, and having not had time to take my meds this morning, am experiencing a heavy asthma attack. thankfully it passes and i’m doing my thing, when i graze my pocket to find it empty. i don’t think anything of it because i just thought that in my stupor, i must’ve thrown my phone on my desk or in my backpack. 

i finish my test at about 8:20am and get back to my dorm at around 8:30am. i look everywhere, flipping my room upside and cannot find my phone. so i retrace my steps to find my phone face down in the grass, getting a nice suntan. it was like that for an hour and a half, face down, meaning my bright-ass pink kirby case was very visible (i spotted it from a couple yards away). so somehow no one had stolen it. god likes to fucking toy with me at this point.

so finally i calm down enough to take a nap before my 4pm interview. i fall asleep around 9am, and wake up at 2:45pm, giving me plenty of time to take things easy and slowly make my way to the meeting place.

i get there a little early and it’s a group interview. so this alan rickman lookin-ass starts his thing and i already knew i was walking into something that was gonna be bullshit but fuck i was not prepared. it was for a company called southwestern advantage. in short it recruits college kids for paid internships to sell their shitty encyclopedia-like books and shit. i knew that going in but they promised great pay and i thought i’d give it a shot. 

but holy shit i could not have predicted the dystopian shit this wal-mart alan rickman would say. so if i was a “good candidate” they’d ship me off to tennessee by the end of next week where i would engage in an intense 1 week training program before going to work for an entire 12 weeks over the summer.

that’s not the worst part because after that, they ship you off to either wisconsin or tennessee (similar to a student exchange program, kids from that area would be shipped here) where you’d be placed in a small town to live with a “host family,” where your selling radius would encompass an entire county.

and oh god it gets worse. you’re expected to work 8am - 9pm Monday-Saturday and only get paid on commission. so this dude expects my gay, trans ass to make the decision to be shipped to some hick town  for the entire summer within like 6 days to work a schedule that could qualify as abuse for no guarantee of a worthwhile pay.

and dollar store alan rickman brought along some kids from my college who were already apart of this cult/internment camp and holy shit these people were like robots. they had a strong personality but it was layered with so much fakeness i was convinced they couldn’t pass the turing test. the whole time i was at this thing i was like “is this a recruitment for a summer job or a cult???” so yeah if a group called “southwestern advantage” tries to hit you up, it’s in your best interest to ignore it. it’s an hour and a half of my life i’ll never get back.

i’m fucking spent y’all. it’s almost 12am and i gotta study for my next final tomorrow. i’m stupid. i’m gay. and nothing feels fucking real rn lmao.

As our Changeling: The Lost 2nd Edition Kickstarter finishes up the Spring season, and we prepare to turn the KS site into the Summer motifs of our last seasonal change, I’ve gotta say that everyone’s response to the new edition has been fantastic, and we’re thrilled at the continuing momentum and the interest during this Spring week. Is it weird to talk about Spring while we are in December holidays mode?

Nah, I don’t think so, we’re roleplayers after all, and used to imagining one thing while something else is going on. Plus, we have our holiday presents to look forward to! For my Christmas presents, the one I’m really looking forward to is the DVDs of the new Twin Peaks season. Certainly a precursor to the “dark secrets under the surface” settings we’ve all been enjoying for years, and I have danced around to avoid spoilers for what seems like a year now!

    Thanks everybody, for letting me use this space last week to wax nostalgic. This week, I’d like to go over our game book creation process (which is very close to any project’s process, but specifically for game books) because we get questions about this all the time, and I hope we can link to this for when folks need to know. Satyr Phil Brucato did a run-down of this in his M20 Art of Mage book we recently released, and it is pretty darn accurate:

Satyr Phil sez: Lots of fans have asked about the process behind these books, and so – to give a context to the work an illustrator does – I’ve included an overview of the process we go through when crafting a book for Mage.

As a general rule, the stages involved in creating, say, a roleplaying game sourcebook, are as follows:

• Brainstorming, during which the line developer (essentially a project manager for the series in question) decides what the book should cover, determines the themes and approach involved, hashes out the contents of the book, and figures out how large, detailed, and extensive the project will be when it gets published. (RichT here: Satyr also has a group of folks he calls his “brain-trust” that he bounces ideas off of. Not every developer has a formal group like that, but many solicit input during this phase from colleagues and friends).

• Outlining, wherein the developer drafts up an outline for the text. The author(s) use(s) this outline as a blueprint for the book, its chapters and contents, and so forth. If the book has multiple authors, the outline assigns sections and chapters to the writing crew, giving them rough instructions to follow while they’re writing it.

• Writing, the stage at which the author(s) produce(s) the written text. Generally, this stage involves two drafts: the first one, that lays the foundation for the final work, and the second, which polishes it to a professional sheen.

(RichT here: As you’ll note below in our weekly project progress report, we break this phase into First Drafts, Redlines, and Second Drafts, as the writers are sending in drafts and the developer(s) are giving them back notes on what needs to change. Those notes are the Redlines, as they were originally written in red ink on the paper text pages).

• Development, during which the developer puts the personal touch on the text. In my case, this usually involves a large amount of additional writing and rewriting, as well as conferences with my brain-trust in order to catch and improve elements that I might have missed. Every line developer, however, handles this stage according to their personal style and desires. Mine just happens to involve a lot of writing and revision!

• Editing, when the developer hands off the polished text to an editor for proofreading. Although the developer and brain-trust have, ideally, proofed the text before this point, the editor brings a fresh set of eyes to the project. Usually, that editor will spot mistakes the developer and other collaborators did not catch.

• Art direction, which generally occurs as the text goes into editing. The developer hands the art notes off to the art director, who then chooses a group of artists who’ll be working from those notes in order to illustrate the book. Based on those notes, the availability of freelance illustrators, and the suitability of the freelance artists in the art director’s stable of talent, the art director – who, in the Onyx Path era, is generally Michael Chaney – hires a group of illustrators for the project, gets them the art notes and a prodigiously underlined copy of the pre-edit manuscript (underlined to indicate potential illustrations that will suit the text), gives them a deadline, and waits for the artwork to come in so the book can be laid out once the editing and illustration stages have been completed.

• Illustration, during which time those artists create their work and send it in. As mentioned earlier, those artists used to send their work in via a postal-delivery service; since the late 1990s, thanks to the innovation of high-speed internet services, those illustrations have been delivered digitally. (RichT here: Much like with the writing, illustration occurs in multiple phases; typically rough sketches, tight sketches and/or color sketches, and finished art. The art director, as well as some folks with special appropriate knowledge like the Creative Director or developer, review these phases and get comments back to the illustrators.)

• Layout, which occurs after the text has been edited and the illustrations have been sent in and approved. A graphic designer takes the files, lays them out in a publishable book format, (RichT here: and designs logos, page design elements, parchments, etc…) and sends them back to the line developer for…

• Proofing / corrections – a stage that can involve between two and six drafts of the work. The line developer takes the layout file, prints it out, and goes over it looking for things to correct. Once the corrections are finished, the developer sends the corrections back to the graphic designer, who (one hopes) inputs those corrections and sends back a corrected draft. This process ends when most (though not, inevitably, all) of the flaws are found and corrected.

• Indexing occurs once the book has been laid out. The indexer – who might be a contractor hired specifically for that task – creates a list of terms to index, then goes through the entire text, finds the appropriate terms, and inputs them into a file that will be laid out, upon completion, by the graphic designer. Given the massive amount of time and labor involved in creating a high-quality index, this stage gets used for only the biggest and most important projects. For context, the index for Mage 20th Anniversary Edition demanded almost three weeks of high-intensity labor.

• Approval, during which the owners of the IP (intellectual property) go through the project and approve it for press, require changes, or withhold approval completely. When you’re working with a licensed IP, as Onyx Path Publishing does with the World of Darkness and Chronicles of Darkness books, (RichT here: And Exalted!) there can be several steps in an approval process: concept, text, and layout approval. This isn’t a stage you need to go through if you own the intellectual-property rights, or work for the company that does; it’s inevitable, though, when you do not.

• Once the appropriate stages are complete, the book goes to press. Even then, there’s a final proof stage, during which the printer sends an advance copy to the publisher in order to (hopefully) catch any new or lingering mistakes. During the Mage 20 press-proof stage, we found a formatting glitch that would have screwed up the color balance in the book. Once this stage has finally been passed as well, the printer rolls press and the files become a finished book.

    Finally, just a note about the DragonMeet meet-up that Eddy Webb, Dave Brookshaw, and Matthew Dawkins were able to do at the convention in London over last weekend. I’ve only heard scattered reports from them, but it sounds like there was a lot of good shop-talk about development best practices, upcoming projects like Deviant and They Came From Beneath the Sea!, and other projects we can’t go into now.

With our Onyx Path creators spread out around the world, it is really hard to get that sort of sharing of experiences that really help creators formalize their work habits effectively, and expand their ideas, even with internet chat rooms and such. Spotlight on Cleo Berry: Actor/Singer

Interview by Renato Rizzuti

Cleo Berry is known as “the funny guy.” During the course of this interview, Cleo is shown be much more than that! A well trained and passionate actor that has a great attitude towards acting and towards life! Cleo’s well thought out and thorough answers reveal a dynamic actor and a lover of life! 

Renato: You were born in Little Rock, Arkansas, USA, on February 10, 1984. This makes you an Aquarius from an astrological point of view. I was born on February 12 which also makes me an Aquarius. What qualities do people born under that sign possess that makes the person perfect for an acting profession? Is this personally true in your case? 

Cleo: First, Happy Belated birthday my Aquarian brother. As you know, Aquarians are known to be deep thinkers, very intellectual and generally just want to help the world be a better place. These are qualities that I bring into my everyday acting career. I have to think deeply about the character. What are their quirks? What makes them tick? What’s their motivation for life? What do they want most of all in the project? I fully believe that being an intelligent person is an asset as an actor. There’s tons of reading scripts and studying. It’s almost like full time college. We’re constantly preparing a group project that we have to perform in front of the class for a grade or in my case a job booking. But I absolutely love it. No complaining here. And I think we as actors are merely putting a mirror up to society and showing them parts of our humanity. Sometimes it’s a drama and sometimes it’s a comedy but we’re always trying to be as true to life and the character as possible. 

Renato: Was there a person or thing that inspired you to be an actor during the 18 years you spent in Little Rock? 

Cleo: I’ve always attended an Arts school. From first grade through college, I’ve been immersed in performing arts. So, I caught the acting bug in sixth grade when my elementary school took out our music class to a dinner theatre matinee show to see my music teacher perform Nancy in “Oliver!” It was there that I saw actors my age singing, dancing and acting. I instantly knew that I wanted to do that too. A few days later, while in music class, I asked my teacher how I could do it too. She helped my mom and I get me into a training camp over that summer. I’ve been on this path, since then. 

Renato: You moved to New York at age 18. What motivated you to make the move? How did you feel about the move? 

Cleo: Yes, I left LR for NYC at eighteen because I needed more training. The best trained there. So, I applied and auditioned and was accepted into the musical theatre training program at AMDA (NYC). I was excited about the move. The fact that 9/11 had just happened the previous year didn’t scare me at all. 

Renato: You graduated from The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (NYC). What is the most important thing you learned about acting there and was there a particular instructor who inspired you?                                   

Cleo: Most important things that I learned is how to break down a script and a song. I hated all the monotonous work of creating a character while in school but it definitely helped me with establishing my own short cut to getting to the heart of a character, scene. Darren R. Cohen is the acting instructor who I learned the most from. From my first semester there, Darren helped mold me. He absolutely let me be me and guided me through my schooling. He even created a cabaret show for me and three other students after we graduated. His belief in me is something that I still wear like a badge of honor.

Renato: You missed your graduation from the Academy to go to a feature film callback. What factors did you take into consideration when you made that decision?                                                                                                                   

Cleo: I was paying to attend a performing arts conservatory with the hopes of getting acting work once completed. I had the opportunity to land a lead in a film. It was something that I couldn’t pass up. I did not book the job but I proved to myself how bad I truly wanted my dream to happen.

 Renato: You made a name for yourself as “the funny guy” in numerous commercials and promos. What qualities do you possess that make you ideal as “the funny guy?” How do you personally feel about being “the funny guy?” What higher life purpose do “funny guys” serve or in other words what do “funny guys” do for the rest of humanity? 

Cleo: I’m a rotund guy with a big smile. I’m also quite funny, when prompted. Those are the qualities I possess to work in commercials. I love commercials. Great work, if you can get it. Being funny pays but I don’t think I’m serving any purpose other than selling a product. I certainly hope that if someone out there is having a bad day, and they see a hilarious commercial it brightens their day. Flips it around. But that’s pressure I don’t put on myself.

Renato: You also excel in dramatic roles and have worked with award winning actors such as Hugh Laurie, Glynn Turman and Ving Rhames. From an acting point of view how are dramatic roles different from comedic roles? I what ways are they similar? Given a choice, would you choose comedy or drama? 

Cleo: For me, dramatic roles are easier. I love being in that raw, real space of a role. With comedy, no matter what you do, it’s gotta be funny. With both drama and comedy you’ve gotta be open and readily available for what the scene and story demands. Sometimes, comedy gets to be a bit stressing to me. Coincidentally, it’s also the easiest for me to perform. If given a choice, I would pick drama 7 out of 10 times.

Renato: Name one of your favourite comedic roles.

Renato: You were in two Super Bowl commercials. As far as commercial acting is concerned that is quite an achievement! How did you feel being in a Super Bowl commercial? How do you feel about doing commercials in general? 

Cleo: Yes, I was in a Super Bowl commercial for Tide. It turned out great and was the big spot everyone was talking about. This year, I did a Super Bowl spot for Pampers. Got to act and sing with John Legend and Adam Levine. Super cool.  The Super Bowl is the top of the commercial realm. Something I always wanted to achieve. Very thankful to finally be able to cross it off my vision board.

Renato: Your bio refers to your “stunning tenor singing voice.” Can you tell us which musical performance has been a highlight of your career?

Cleo: Playing Horton on a National Tour of “Seussical The Musical” was awesome! I loved traveling around the country to all the cities and towns and putting up a show. No performance video as it was over 10 years ago but it was a great show and cast.

 Renato: You studied Taekwondo and played football. Can you tell us how the discipline learned through sports can be carried over to acting?

Cleo: It’s all about practice and performing at your best. It’s goal driven as well. Block or tackle in football. Break the wood board in Taekwondo and Booking in the Acting world.

Renato: Acting involves mental and physical work. How do you keep prepared for both?            

Cleo: I work with a terrific acting coach when I need to tune up or need help with the development phase of a character. Physically, yes, I do have to get some exercise on my weekly calendar. It’s tough but I make it happen.

Renato: Are there any upcoming projects you would like to tell us about?

Cleo: Yes, I have a project that comes out February 13 on YouTube Premium called “Weird City.” I play an awesome character named Dirg. That’s about all I can say. It’s written and executive produced by Jordan Peele (Get Out) and Charlie Sanders (Key and Peele). Love the way that they write. Definitely give it a watch. I’m guest starring in the third episode of season one.

Renato: Your personal quotation is, “I’m like the Energizer Bunny…you tell me I can’t do something and I keep going and going… until I do it!” Was there a situation in your life that you put that into play?

Cleo: When I was venturing out on my own at eighteen and embarking on school and a professional career, I would always tell myself this. I knew I’d come up against a multitude of brick walls, No’s and who are you’d! So, I’d remind myself to keep going. 

Renato: In general, what is your philosophy of acting?

Cleo: To get to the heart and truth of the character without judgment. Sounds easy but we all have our prejudices and quirks. Sometimes it’s tough to put yourself on hold and put a character on. Buts it’s something that must be done to effectively live as that role.

Renato: In general, what is your philosophy of life?

Cleo: To live, love and explore.

Renato: You won a special recognition at The Boston International Film Festival. What was that for?

On Monday morning, Mum and I paid a visit to our old neighbourhood of Ashwood as it was the start of the July school holidays. But first we dropped into The Pancake Parlour (Malvern East) for brunch. We both decided to order the hot cakes winter special with fresh strawberries for $10.90 each. It was absolutely amazing and honestly looked too good to eat.

Next we walked down the main street of Ashburton with its array of cafes, florists, massage salons, newsagent, bakers and butchers. It’s become an area exclusive to the rich and well off with residents walking their dogs and driving expensive cars through the back roads. Lastly we checked out our old house and street. We used to live close to Jordanville during most of the 1990’s in a single-story commission home, my childhood home. It features cream coloured walls rendered with cement, a brown tiled roof and a glass-fronted porch.

Some of the houses in the area have been demolished and some modern townhouses and apartments have been erected in their place. It’s lovely to see that half of the run-down looking commission houses have been preserved and left alone along with features like front fences, plants and hedges. It brings back a lot of nostalgic memories of regular walks and bike rides along the street that I used to live in over 20 years ago. I also remember some of our old neighbours like Gwen and her German Shepherd named Twiggy who we used to visit from time to time.

Lately we had a drive past my past primary school and high school. There has been many additions and renovations made to both Parkhill primary school and Ashwood High School (formerly Ashwood College) but parts of them are still the same like the ovals and wetlands plus the reception and office buildings. I attended both of these schools back in the mid-late 1990’s and generally had some fond memories there. I loved hanging out by the pine trees which divides the schools right down the middle, sliding down the grassy hills and playing on the play equipment.

On Monday night, I went to a Yin-style Yoga class at Level Up Yoga in Berwick. It was taught my a young lass named Emma Ahearn who just started teaching at the studio a couple of weeks ago. On Tuesday morning, I went down to YMCA Casey RACE to do some cardio exercise in the gym. I didn’t end up getting there until around 11:30am as I was struggling to get motivated and I did a few household chores beforehand. I decided to split it between two machines: the treadmill and the upright bike. I didn’t find the bike all that challenging to begin with as the resistance level was quite low but when it creeped up to level 10 and 11, I could definitely feel the difference as it was getting harder and harder to keep pedaling. After half an hour on the bike, my legs felt like jelly.

For the DEVELOPMENT part, I had to do some Strongman carries with a variety of deadball weights ranging from 6kg to 40kg. It was pretty challenging especially trying to support myself, place it up on my shoulder and keep my form. By the heaviest weight, I literally felt like I was a pregnant lady! For tonight’s WOD dubbed “The Dixonator”, I had to do as many rounds as possible of the following exercises: 15kg Keg Carry, 10 Tire Flips, 5 Medball Cleans, 15 Deadlifts @ 35kg, 20 Sandbag Lunges and 25 Weighted Sit-Ups (5kg plate). Easily the hardest part of this workout for me was the lunges as the fatigue sets in very quickly and I find it hard keeping my head up the whole time. However, I was smashing the keg carries, tire flips, cleans and sit-ups. Felt really good to finish 3 rounds in under 20 minutes given how intense this WOD is. Thank goodness for Mandi and Jeanette for their encouragement plus cranking some hits from Christina Aguilera.

On Friday morning, Mum and I dropped into Toll Group to apply for a job there in Dandenong South. I didn’t feel like I was ready or prepared enough for this and with my poor quality of sleep and lack of energy, this really didn’t help matter. But still I made the effort to at least print a resume out and hand it in to the reception girls. What I wasn’t expecting was a phone call about 2-3 hours later from Toll giving me an interview opportunity.

It’s a lot to process for me right now as I’m not exactly in the most ideal headspace. I should be excited about the news but instead I’m dreading it. My brain flooded with so many “What if?” questions: What if I can’t make this work? What if I have to give up my other commitments like going to the gym, counselling, going out to local gigs, lunch, coffee etc? Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself. I just hate the uncertainty so much.

So I’ve locked in a time for next Monday morning to have this interview at Toll but before that I’ve gotta get an online induction and police check completed. I just hope that I’m cut out for both of these. One step at a time as always. https://www.tollgroup.com/about/working-toll

I was also feeling physically exhausted and emotionally flat today. Beating myself up for not going to my Body Combat class this morning, I was getting myself upset about being stuck at 93kg and wishing that I could somehow feel good about body, overweight or not. I’ve been reaching out for the comfort foods again and I’m feeling really guilty about that, knowing that I’m consuming excess calories and not doing anything to burn them off. Hopefully things turn around for me next week but right now I feel like shit.

We Slip Away. (1/?)

Graduation was fast approaching and a few acceptance letters were currently lining the family dinning table. Amanda turned over slightly and stared at the digital clock on the bedside table and sighed, summer couldn’t come quick enough, she was done with the endless hours studying until it felt like her eyes were going to pop out. Kicking the blanket off she finally put her legs over the side of her bed and rubbed her eyes before slipping her glasses on and grabbing her phone, a text waiting for her.

“Ryan and Tom have practice, I’ll pick you up.” She sent Sarah back a quick reply saying she’d be ready in about half an hour. Grabbing a pair of jeans and a random t-shirt form her bedroom floor that passed the sniff test, she covered herself in some deodorant and grabbed her bag before heading downstairs. “Ma! We got any bread left?” she was hopping into her Vans when her mother flicked her with a tea towel, “did I raise you as a heathen!” Katherine’s Irish accent was still thick as ever and as much as she tried, her Catholic ways had never taken hold of her daughter. “Sorry Ma,” “And yes, we do have bread, already made you some toast. Grab it quickly, Sarah just pulled up.” A small beep sounded and Amanda kissed her ma’s cheek before putting the toast in her mouth, grabbing her bag and running out the door.

“You look like shit,” Sarah greeted her, reversing out of the driveway. “I know, had fucking nightmares of acceptance letter’s strangling me.” Her best friend laughed, “you decided yet?” “Nope. Ma is pushing me to go to Queen’s University Belfast, I had no idea she’d put an application in. She reckons it’d be a great experience for me and we have a shit tonne of family there.” “Ireland?! What’s ya dad say?” Amanda shrugged, “da ain’t dumb enough to argue with her. He just said it gives them an excuse to go home more often.”

As they pulled in to the school car park, she looked at Sarah, “so, where you off to? You said you’d tell me today.” She waited for Sarah to look at her and she tilted her head to the side as it all clicked into place, “holy shit, London Film School sent you the massive envelope didn’t they?!” Her grin ended up matching Sarah’s, “dude! That’s amazing! I’m so happy for you!” “I gotta tell Ryan and I think I wanna go there single…” She nodded, following her friends thought process, “makes sense, he wants to stay close to home, you wanna explore the world. Besides, isn’t this when we’re supposed to have all these amazing experiences?” “Wow, way to support my relationship possibly ending.” “Hey, you know I don’t think high school sweethearts is a thing, you’re 18 for fucks sake, this one of many love’s you’re going to have.”

Lunchtime rolled around quickly and Amanda was the first one to reach the table they all sat at. She had a book open and was zoning out to the noise around her when someone dropped down beside her, “sup nerd?” shoving her right elbow out, she connected with ribs, “not much, faggot.” She looked to her right and smiled at Tom who was pretending her elbow had actually hurt him, “do not be damaging these goods!” “Well I guess it’s lucky you’ve already passed your medical then isn’t it?” Tom had already has his enlistment interview, he was shipping off to basic the Monday after graduation. “This is true, you coming to the grad party at Ryan’s, be the last time we’re all together for awhile.” She shrugged, “thinking about it, but frankly, getting plastered with the football team and its fan club isn’t very appealing.” His hand tapped her thigh as he chuckled, “you say that, but you always end up enjoying the parties. I mean, the last one we found you curled up in Jeremy’s cupboard. Moments later they were joined by Sarah and Ryan who were laughing about something she missed because he attention fell to the hand still resting on her thigh.

The fuck?

This was weird, because Tom was not the touchy feely kind of guy. Every girl he’d ever hooked up with learnt real quick that he wasn’t going to be holding your hand and carrying your bag down the hallway. Shit, usually he only had a quick fling with a cheerleader before he was bored. Choosing to ignore this odd behaviour, she tuned back into the conversation as Ryan directed a question at her, “oh um ma’s pushing me to Belfast,” the grip on her leg got slightly tighter, “you’re kidding?” Ryan asked, his arm around Sarah’s shoulders as she ate. “Yeah she thinks it’ll be good for me to live there for awhile. I haven’t decided, got a bit of time still.”

The days suddenly flew by and suddenly the four of them were getting into their graduation gowns. Their parents were all waiting to take photos and the four of them posed together, separately before the boys ran off to join the football team for whatever they had to do. “Jesus, it’s finally here.” Amanda nodded at Sarah, “you talk to Ryan?” Sarah nodded, “yeah, it fucking sucked, but he’s being an adult about it, we gonna part ways when I leave, both not ready to say goodbye just yet.” “Good on ya, and you never know, you may end up crossing paths again down the track.”

The two of them began to move towards where they needed to line up Amanda made a passing comment that had Sarah stop dead in her tracks, “excuse me? The fuck did you just say?” Amanda raised her eyebrow, “I said I’m going to get laid before I go to uni.” “Well that came outta no where, who is the lucky man? I mean I gave it up to Ryan because he was hot and he ain’t gonna get better than me.” The two to of them smirked, both knowing Sarah also had major feels for Ryan so that had helped her decision process. “Not so much lucky but I figured Tom would correct the situation for me.” “Tom? As in Tom? Man whore Tom?” Amanda nodded, “least it wont be shit and there’s no chance of feelings cause he’s leaving.” “Jesus Christ girl… does he even know?” “Not yet. But I doubt he’ll say no.” “I mean you could’ve picked worse, he’s easy on the eyes that’s for sure… don’t tell Ryan I said that.” Amanda laughed, “secrets safe with me.” “Oh this is so exciting! My little girl is growing up finally!”

Later that night Amanda was standing in front of her wardrobe looking at all the clothes in front of her, Marilyn Manson playing loudly in the background. Tom had agreed to pick her up to make sure she actually went to the party but he was still clueless to her plans. She knew Sarah would’ve clued Ryan in which would possibly work in her favour, Ryan was all about helping other’s get a bit of somethin’ somethin’. “Fuck it” she muttered pulling out a band t-shirt, jean shorts and her doc martens, she wasn’t going to try and impress these people now and Tom had seen her looking much worse and he’d fucked much, much worse. Her hair was a long, red mess but that was nothing new. She let out a long sigh before she took her glasses off and left them on her bedside table, they’d only end up broken by the time the party was over.

A car horn sounded and she looked outside her bedroom window, seeing Tom’s car in the driveway. Was that the time already? Shit, she really had to stop getting caught up in her head. She shoved her phone in her back pocket as well as her house key and headed downstairs calling goodbye to her parents but not stopping to receive the lecture her ma had prepared for this occasion. “Finally, thought you’d got fucking lost.” “Thought I’d make you wait, anticipation is key. Come on, I’m sure Ryan’s got something special for the occasion.”

Tom was standing out in Ryan’s backyard with a bunch of the other guys from the team with a beer in his hand. This was going to be the last time he partied with this crowd. The last time he got drunk at a fucking high school party and blown by a stupid cheerleader who most likely had no future beyond this fucking small town. In two days time he was getting on the bus to basic training, leaving this place and his colourful reputation behind him.

He turned as he felt a tap on his shoulder and followed his best mate away from the group of guys, “here,” Ryan passed him a freshly lit joint, “something special for tonight, be outta your system by the time you leave.” Excellent. “So, I was told to keep my mouth closed, but you know me, I’m a helper.” Tom raised his eyebrow in suspicion as he took a generous pull of the joint, “oh yeah?” Ryan nodded, “a little birdie told me that you may just get to pop a v-card tonight, you know, something you haven’t done in awhile.” Tom laughed, “the fuck you on about? Aint no virgins left in…” he didn’t get to finish his sentence as his brain ticked over all the girls he knew. “Fuck off mate, you’re full of shit.” Ryan laughed, before lighting up a cigarette, “I have a very, very reliable source my good friend.”

Tom looked towards the girl in question, who was leaning on the porch railing drinking a shitty beer and laughing at something Sarah had said. “Come on dude, we been friends for way too long.” “So?” Ryan countered, taking the joint from Tom for a moment before handing it back and putting the cigarette back to his lips, “no one wants to run off to college a virgin dude. And she’s very aware of your reputation.” Ryan couldn’t stop his laugh during the last part of his sentence. Tom pondered this information a moment and smirked, friend or not, he couldn’t deny that it’d nice to sleep with a red head before he left.

As the night worse on, the music got louder and the party got more intoxicated. No one would call the police though; this small town knew exactly what was going on. Tom spent his time almost stalking after Amanda, wanting to see if he could catch any kind of hint that Ryan had been right. There was no way to tell and she hadn’t come up to him at all, they hadn’t spoken since he’d picked her up. But a moment of opportunity presented itself when she separated from Sarah to sneak off to the bathroom upstairs and Ryan took Sarah off for some alone time. Tom followed into the bedroom and shut the door behind him, flicking the lock.

He leant against the bedroom door, arms crossed over his chest. He couldn’t control the sudden excitement he felt. He’d never really thought of her in a sexual sense, but the more he toyed with the idea, the more he was keen on it. The bathroom door opened and out she walked, jumping in surprise as she saw him. “Jesus you scared me, the fuck you follow me for?” He could tell she’d had a bit to drink, she swayed slightly and her eyes were heavier than usual, her hair more messy than usual from her running her hands through it.

He didn’t say anything, just pushed himself off the door and closed the gap between them. She blinked a few times, just watching him and he noticed the subtle change in her breathing as his hands grabbed her hips. “What-“ he used his lips to silence her, holding her steady as she almost lost her balance, her hands gripping his upper arms but she surprised him by kissing back, eagerly. He moved one hand up her back to the back of her neck where he could grip some of her hair keeping her to him. The kiss deepened and suddenly he felt hungry for her, all these unfamiliar feelings coursing through him. He heard her moan softly in her throat and his confidence shook slightly as his senses were filled with only her.

This hadn’t happened to him before.

Trying to remain the stud he was, he moved them back the few steps to the bed, smirking as she laughed as they landed on it but he quickly moved over her, their lips connecting again, her eagerness to kiss him was rising a need in him he couldn’t remember feeling before with someone, and he’d had a fair amount of experience. His head dropped to her shoulder as she undid his pants and her hand slipped into his boxers, a little shaky at first, “little tighter” he groaned as her hand wrapped around him and began moving. Had she done this before? Cause it felt fucking amazing.

His hand was up her shirt a second later, cupping her breast while he kissed her neck. Her hand came out of his boxers and then their hips were grinding together and Tom had to think of anything else to stop himself from finishing then and there. Unfortunately a loud banging on the door bought the two of them out of their heated moment. “Amanda! Your da is here!”  And just like that, the moment was lost and she was moving herself from underneath him, trying to straighten herself up, “fuck me,” she muttered, without a look back she left the room.

Tom fell onto the bed, facing the ceiling trying to will his boner away. He ran his hands over his face. The fuck was that about? He could smell her deodorant on him, he couldn’t shake her. He got off the bed adjusted himself and did his pants up before leaving the room, his hand running through his hair. As he got the bottom of the stairs, he ran into Ryan who had an expectant look on his face and a shit eating grin, Tom simply shook his head with a shrug before going in search of beer. This night was fucking strange.

Beware by Deftones was blaring through her stereo as she lay on her bed the next night; she hadn’t stopped thinking about what had almost happened. Every spare moment she was daydreaming about Tom’s hands all fucking over her. Her parents had been pissed off that she hadn’t been home by curfew and had dragged her away before she’d gotten to know if the rumours about Tom were true. They’d certainly felt true.  The hours ticked away until she sat bolt upright on her bed.

No. She had a plan and she was going to stick to the fucking plan!

She pulled on a clean t-shirt and a clean pair of grey trackies before slipping into a pair of vans. She jogged downstairs, “be back soon!” she yelled, again not waiting for a reply, knowing her parents would be distracted with some random movie playing on TV that night. She couldn’t tell if she was feeling something else towards Tom or if she just wanted to finally cross this off her list before she entered the adult world. Whatever it was, it didn’t matter.

Stopping outside of his family’s home she took a deep breath before walking up the steps. There were no cars in the driveway, just Tom’s parked on the lawn so she knocked but there was no answer. She could hear the faint thump of music so she just tried the handle, surprised to find it unlocked. That wouldn’t happen in her household. Shutting the door behind her she walked the path to Tom’s room where the music was coming from. The door had been left open slightly and she could see Tom sitting on the side of his bed, shirt off looking at something she couldn’t see.

Taking a step forward she went to push open the door but another person appearing stopped her dead in her tracks. Amy fucking Smith was suddenly straddling Tom’s lap in all her naked glory. Amanda tore her eyes away from the scene unfolding and tried to quietly exit the house but as she got closer tot eh front door, she tripped and fell. “Fuck,” she cursed, getting up quickly and high tailing it outta there and running until she could no longer see his street.

What the fuck?! Why was there an ache in her chest? She didn’t like him in that way. It was just shock, yeah, just the shock of almost seeing him fuck somebody. She ran the rest of the way home, trying to burn away this odd feeling and when she threw open the front door her parents starred at her confused, their daughter never fucking ran, “I’m going to Belfast, give me the acceptance letter, I’m leaving!”

Unknown to her, Tom had seen her bolt from his house. Soon as he’d heard the bang in the hallway he’d moved Amy off him ready to hit an intruder but there was no mistaking the red hair running away from his house. For the first time in his young life, Tom cursed himself.
