To be fair, I do agree with the comments calling Paper Mario aloof to his little brother, since he's (at least physically) consistently distant.

Now I'm not saying this is a bad thing.

There's nothing inherently wrong with siblings wanting to each do their own thing.

And Paper Mario going on adventures with new friends instead of his brother helps give the Paper Mario series its own identity compared to the Mario & Luigi series.

But did the first 3 games have to make Mario such a jerk about it??

To recap:

In the first two games, which came out during the "let's constantly bully Luigi" era, for some reason they had Mario be the primary source of said "comedy".

From reading Luigi's secret diary, to needing to blow up the rock/bash the block Luigi was sitting on to talk to him, to Mario being dismissive of Luigi's pleas to take him with him on adventures, to Mario always falling asleep when Luigi is telling his own stories, to the bottom of the barrel writing in Toadia's trouble.

Plus the fact that there weren't any moments of kindness from Mario's end to have the previous moments be an exception, not the norm.

Super Paper Mario wasn't quite like its predecessors. Instead, they had Mario be a generic blank slate protagonist... in a story where he really should have been an actual character with proper emotions, given everything Luigi goes through.

(And yes, I do know that there's like two moments in SPM where Mario shows concern for Luigi. But they're both very late into the final chapter, and not during its most iconic moments, so I can understand why people don't know they exist.)

It just baffles me how the first 3 Paper Mario games, so widely praised for their strong character writing, messed up this badly on this aspect of Mario's character.

I much prefer how the later games, like Paper Jam and Origami King, handled it. Where Paper Mario is going on adventures without his brother, but it's still clear he cares and will help out Luigi when he's in trouble. And I really hope future PM games take this approach.

And this might just be me going full tin foil hat, but I can't help but wonder if the way Mario was written in those games (at least indirectly) inspired the bad "Mario hates Luigi and abuses him" takes.

To elaborate:

Mario dismissing Luigi's pleas to take him on his adventures instead of being stuck house sitting -> "Mario is constantly forcing to Luigi to do things he doesn't want to do"

Mario reading Luigi's secret diary -> "Mario is mean to Luigi and doesn't respect his boundaries"

Mario falling asleep during Luigi's stories, when Luigi had been established as looking forward to Mario's tales -> "Mario sees Luigi as being beneath him, not as an equal"

Mario not figuring out Mr. L is Luigi -> "Mario only hurts Luigi and is never there for him when he needs help"

Mr. L being a master at robotics, but Paper Luigi isn't -> "Luigi has such incredible potential, but Mario's influence is keeping him from reaching it"

For me in "short"

Tippi: The protagonist of the story and got her happy ending, I came to miss her presence after the end.

Count Bleck: Definitely one of Mario's best written villains. I cry.

Nastasia: I was in her place, I empathized a lot with her and sometimes I wish she would return in other stories.

O'chunks: I was surprised by her story, I didn't expect that background, for me he is a himbo in a good way. A good guy.

Mimi: I can't say the same with Mimi, a little disappointed, but at least there are headcanons.

Mr. L: Definitely wasted potential, I would have liked to see more with the other minions. It's weird if I got a penny for every time Luigi is hypnotized into being an enemy I'd have two cents, which isn't much but it's weird that it happens twice.

Dimentio: It's thanks to him that I have an obsession with Jesters, he managed to do what Bowser couldn't with just a snap of his fingers. Terrifying, I hope one day we see it again.

Tippi:

Omg I miss Tippi too :( it feels so weird playing the game without her.

Tippi is so . so interesting. All of the characters are interesting, but I especially love the way she’s written. I love how they were able to nail that she’s gentle and caring, but also firm and not about to put up with anybody’s bullshit. To me, that’s hard to write without it feeling disengenuine, and they pulled it off with Tippi VERY well. A particular line of hers I really like is, “Perhaps...my life would have been more carefree without you, that is true,” in response to Blumiere’s, “But I have caused you so much suffering..." She didn’t immediately console him. She told him the truth, as harsh as it was. Idk, that scene had just always stuck out to me. It’s not a line I expected to be written.

I wish her unexplained teleportation powers were. Explained. But that doesn’t really mess up her character so it’s okay. However. I hate how she developed a crush on Mario. I’ve always hated it. I like to pretend it’s not real LMAO. But then again, it can be interpreted in a deeper way- that she didn’t actually have a crush on Mario and she was merely projecting onto him. Her memory was flooding back to her and she was in a very vulnerable situation after all. Projecting those feelings for an, at the time, unknown individual onto Mario makes sense.

Count Bleck:

where do I even begin on Count Bleck good lord. One of Nintendo’s best villains even outside of the Mario franchise. God he’s so fucking good.

I wish it was more clear whether or not he was planning on erasing Team Bleck from existence as well. Whether or not he was going to do that that impacts his character HEAVILY. Him wanting all worlds to end but sparing the people who cared about him really helps his “redemption” and helps us have more sympathy for him. Unfortunately it’s not directly touched on outside of that one thing Dimentio said, but. It’s Dimentio LMFAOOO we can’t trust him. I personally lean more towards Bleck was going to betray the team just given the evidence about it. I yapped a lot about my reasoning IN A POST I CANT FIND. It had a bunch of screenshots and stuff and I can’t. Fucking. Find it. Oh well I guess that’s just GONE ❤️

Despite this I feel like it’s important to address Bleck with nuance. I don’t think he intentionally planned on betraying his team. I think he genuinely loved them. But he was so caught up in the Dark Prognosticus and the Void and Timpani and ultimately BEING this Count Bleck character the book spoke of that he felt like there was no way out of it anymore. This is supported by the fact he tried to fight Mario in the final battle despite knowing Timpani was still alive. It’s clear Blumiere had completely lost himself, as if he forgot why he was doing this in the first place and let Count Bleck take over (note: I mean this in a symbolic/psychological sense; I don’t believe the book was controlling him). It’s only when he’s on his death bed that he realizes he does not have to do this.

I put redemption in quotation marks because. I don’t think he was redeemed. Granted he didn’t have enough time to do anything, but to be honest, I don’t think he or any other member of Team Bleck is redeemable (before anybody comes at me with the lament au/ajl, THE POINT IS THAT DIMENTIO IS NOT REDEEMABLE NO MATTER HOW HARD HE TRIES!! YOU CANNOT REDEEM THE EXTERMINATION OF LIFE ITSELF!!!)

Nastasia:

NASTASIA COME BACK TO ME. God I wish they kept her emo hair strand.

Her character is so. so sad (I feel like I’ve said that sentence forty seven times, this game is MISERABLE). I love her so much. I love her confidence, I love how she doesn’t take bullshit from anyone, I love how much she loves. It makes me so fucking sad how depressed she remains long after Blumiere’s sacrifice. Like, we don’t know how much time passed between the ending of the game and Mario returning (when you boot up the save file again, Merlon states that it has been a while since he’s seen Mario). It explains why Mimi and O’Chunks seem fine (I’m sure they’re not fine, but I mean it explains why they were able to have a “normal” conversation with Mario and co.), but Nastasia is still so heartbroken.

Of course that is to be expected, and I’m glad Nintendo didn’t make everything all sunshine and rainbows ooo we’re all happy now etc, even IF a long time has passed. It makes total sense that there are repercussions to experiencing a traumatic event and Nastasia portrays it well (for a Mario game). In her epilogue dialogue, her hope for better days is shallow. It’s fake. She shows how she truly feels and immediately backtracks (“I guess I should be happy... I mean, I am, but, um...”). She still wants to put on that confident and secure exterior, but it’s not working. She will always love Blumiere, and she will always miss him. I hope she finds happiness one day, too. She deserves to live her own life.

O’Chunks:

O’CHUNKS IS SO UNDERRATED. FUCK

I know I’m contributing to this I barely post about him but lord he’s so interesting. I know the Japanese and English translation tell different versions of his backstory, but I really like the English version where Blumiere manipulated him in his extremely depressed state to join him. It gives more layers to Blumiere’s character- the lengths he was willing to go to get this job done, lengths that he would have never gone to before losing Timpani (and himself).

O’Chunks has one of the most unforgiving backstories in the whole games and it’s rarely talked about. He was a fucking COMMANDER OF AN ARMY and the whole game he’s just played off as some dumb brute/comic relief. I actually believe he suffered some kind of brain damage from that final battle, explaining his eyes, his struggle to speak properly, and his overall behavior. Also, the fact one of his most trusted advisors betrayed him mirrors his relationship with Dimentio. JUST. GOD . RIPS HAIR OUT. I wouldn’t blame him if he never trusted anybody again after the events of the game. But he clearly has a heart of gold beneath that rough exterior, so I doubt that mindset would come to pass

Also I know it’s not this deep like at All but . Regarding O’Chunks and his backstory, the last war fought in Scotland was the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The Scots lost that battle too, so it fits O’Chunks backstory. It’s funny to imagine he’s hundreds of years old and he just Stopped Aging once he joined the “Mario Dimension” for lack of a better term LMAO. Side note, I also believe Blumiere lost Timpani centuries ago- especially considering the Ancients are extinct by the time the game takes place (although I’ve heard it’s possible Blumiere murdered the entire Tribe of Darkness? but that’s ambiguous) (and my feelings on it would be another yapping session so I’ll shut up for now). It just took THAT long to get the criteria for the Void met. So it’s interesting to think of the concept that O’Chunks and Blumiere have known each other for THAT long. Probably why he sent O’Chunks out to fight the heroes first. He trusted him the most. But then again, I know the game did not intend for O’Chunks to be born in the 1700s lol. Like I said it’s just interesting for me :3

I agree with you- her backstory is disappointing compared to characters like O’Chunks and Dimentio. But at the same time I enjoy the unknown. After all, she is the embodiment of mystery. Her whole shtick is mimicking. You never know if a character is truly themselves or it’s a copy (I mean, you do- her mannerisms are obvious- but still lmao)- hell, even SHE canonically loses herself sometimes in her mimics. But even then, I wish we knew more about her. AND I WISH THE CONCEPT OF HER BEING A FAILED PIXL WAS TALKED ABOUT MORE? WHAT??????? HELLO????? REMINDERRRR that you can’t just go about making Pixls. That was a practice for the Ancients, and the ONLY reason Merlon could do it is because he is a descendant of the Ancients with a shit ton of their books. How old is Mimi? How much has she seen? If she’s centuries or even thousands of years old- depending on how long ago you think the Ancients died out- what was she doing this whole time??? LIKE HELLO!!! MIMI!! SPEAK TO ME!!!!

I love love LOVE LOVE LOVE how she can be used as a parallel to the Pixl Queen in regards to Dimentio. Dimentio and Mimi have a sibling dynamic to me, and the story potential considering Dimentio’s biological sister got turned into a Pixl and. Yk. Mimi could possibly be a failed Pixl. Is INSANE and I WISH it was used more because holy shit it has so much potential.

I like to believe the Pixl Creator (aka Dimentio’s father imo) created Mimi even if there’s no evidence JUST LET ME HAVE THIS but I also made a post maybe a year ago that theorized Francis’ ancestors created Mimi. I don’t think it’s really recognized that Francis CREATED A PIXL WITHOUT MAGIC. Yk that spell that requires the magic of the Dark Prognosticus? Yeah just forget that shit I said earlier about Non-Ancients not being able to just go out and make a Pixl, because apparently this fuckass Redditor did it. Anyways. Tipton is a robot. I already made posts about Mr. L and Dimentio, so I won’t ramble anymore here :3 But in regards to what you said YEAH . Mr. L could’ve been so much more it’s genuinely painful. And Dimentio is fucking terrifying. I honestly like to believe he did genuinely nuke the protagonists and the game only said he merely teleported them because saying “Mario’s dead like for real” is probably something Nintendo didn’t want to put in their game. I mean come on- he used the explosion attack that causes actual damage in battle. They died LMOAOOAOA. I hope we see both of them again. I was hoping so BADLY for even a glimmer of Mr. L in the Mario movie-like a mask/bandana hanging out of a drawer cameo or something. Dazai

* Wants to play Mario Kart since he can’t drive in real life.

* Picks Bowser because he looks cool, doesn’t understand that the weight of his character affects how fast the car will go.

* “WAIT WHY IS YOUR CAR GOING SO FAST!? I’M IN LAST PLACE! Can we start over?”

* Ends up spending fifteen minutes going through character and kart combinations to find the perfect combo for max speed.

* “Oh the blue shell has wings, what does it do?”

* “Yeah don’t throw that, you should keep that.” You’re in first place.

* Throws the blue shell anyway and is very amused when you end up getting hit with the shell.

* “Dammit Dazai!”

* Loves seeing you get frustrated when people pass by you.

* Thinks you look adorable when you get on your knees in front of the TV because “getting closer to the television helps me play better, stop laughing!”

* He ends up just sitting back and watching you play, he finds it much more amusing and he can watch your face.

* “Come on darling, it’s time for bed.” He has to be the reasonable one now.

Chuuya

* Fucking lives for Super Smash Brothers. It’s the one time he can kick your ass for fun.

* Takes the game way too seriously, he can’t handle losing. Honestly he thinks anyone he is versing is Dazai

* Button smasher. BIIIG button smasher. “Babe, pressing the buttons harder doesn’t make you hit harder.” You have to remind him before he breaks another controller.

* For some reason he plays really well with Kirby.

* You laughed the first time he picked Kirby. Became really frustrated when he kept sucking you in and spitting you off the side of the stage.

* Somehow turns it into a drinking game.

* “Alright so get this. Every time you lose, you need to take a shot.”

* “You just want me to get drunk.”

* “Wouldn’t mind it.”

* You end up hating Kirby with a passion after the second time you woke up with a hangover due to his bitch ass spitting you off the map.

* Now you both play as Kirby and it’s just the two of you trying to suck each other in and spit the other off the map.

* “MOVE CLOSER!”

* “GET IN MY MOUTH DAMMIT!”

* If you get close to winning he’ll just take the controller from your hands and place them both to the side and end up making out with you so you forget about the game.

* Also he can’t handle losing so he’d rather just kiss you instead.

* VERY SORE LOSER.

* Will rage like a ten year old on Fortnite, but you think it’s super freaking cute so you don’t stop him.

Atsushi

* Picked Mario Party because it sounded like a fun time and the box looked bright and happy.

* Poor boy didn’t know this game is absolutely destructive.

* Wants to invite everyone from the agency over to play with the two of you since it’s a party game.

* Dazai, Kenji, Ranpo, and Kyoka come over to play. Kunikida’s schedule was too booked to come over, and nobody wanted to deal with an angry Yosano.

* Dazai picks Waluigi, Kenji picks Yoshi, Ranpo picks Mario, Kyoka picks Daisy, and Atsushi picks Luigi.

* Kenji and Atsushi are the only ones who don’t look like they’re about to kill someone.

* Mini games are so intense, Ranpo, Dazai, and you are standing in front of the TV trying to sabotage each other.

* “IF YOU GET ANOTHER STAR I SWEAR I’LL KICK YOUR ASS!” You shout and Atsushi is just looking on in horror.

* “I thought this was a party game...” He whispers to Kenji who for some reason looks like he’s enjoying the way you, Dazai, and Ranpo are bickering.

* “OF COURSE RANPO GETS THE STAR!” Dazai exclaims, even though he still has the most stars out of everyone.

* Atsushi doesn’t understand why everyone is so angry.

* He ends up winning in the end because he got a bunch of pity stars. “Oh wow! Look at that guys!”

* Ranpo is more of a sore loser than Chuuya. Tries to explain to everyone why he should have won. Dazai just shrugs it off, he now has kicking your ass at Mario Party mini games as one of the things he has to do before he dies.

* Atsushi has to destress after everyone leaves, cuddling with you on the couch.

* “Do you think everyone had fun?” He is truly worried that everyone hates each other after the game.

* “Oh yeah, we had a blast. We should do it again.” You say, kissing his cheek softly.

* He doesn’t know if he’d be able to handle another night like that. He was worried that everyone would kill each other or smash the tv or both before the night was over.

* He’d have to find another game to play.

* “Maybe we can all play Mario Kart next time.”

Ranpo

* He’s a Tetris boy. It’s the one game that tests his intelligence.

* The only reason he started playing is because he walked in after work and saw you playing it and he wanted to try.

* Figured out the controls of the game quicker than you did.

* He’s pretty calm while playing, and he usually has you on his lap with his arms wrapped around you and his head on your shoulder looking at the TV.

* It’s the one time his eyes are wide open and you can see the beautiful emerald green of his irises as he concentrates on the screen.

* He’s not much of a sore loser, he just doesn’t give up until he gets first place.

* It takes a while for that to happen, but you can count on him coming home from work and hopping right back on the switch to play.

* “Do you want to give the game a break?” You have to try to pull the controllers from his hands as this point, but he just pouts and tell you that he hasn’t made first place yet so you let him keep playing.

* You have to remind him to use the bathroom and to take a break so he can eat and take water breaks.

* ONCE HE FINALLY GETS FIRST PLACE THOUGH

* OH BOY IS HE SO PROUD OF HIMSELF

* “Y/N COME HERE!” He calls from the other room and you come running of course.

* The smile on his face is so adorable and he’s pointing to the tv at his name at the top of the board.

* “That’s great, you did amazing! I’m so proud of you hon.” Your praise is better than first place.

* He plays the game more intensely now so he can get first place, just so he can hear you tell him how proud you are of his success.

* Your gallery on the switch is full of screenshots from when he got first place. He won’t let you delete them to make room though.

* Everyone from work has to hear about how he’s not only the greatest detective in the world, but also the greatest Tetris player as well.

* He now wants to play every single Tetris game.

* You’ve created a Tetris addict and you can’t even complain, he looks so cute when he’s playing.

Screenshots from Death Stranding Part 12 | All The ANSWERS (END)! :D

I really liked this game! It’s stunning visually, there’s quite a few moments where the acting is fantastic despite there being extremely silly or stupid lines here and there and story wise I think that’s there’s a lot of interesting ideas and thoughts that this game brings out. I don’t think it was executed as well as it could’ve been though. Plus there was a lot of wtf moments and moments that had a ton of exposition with all these different terms that for me it kind of made it hard for me to process everything. I also liked some of the characters like BB/Lou, Mama, Sam, Heartman and Cliff. Every other character I was just kind of meh on though. Although I have to give major props to the actor who play Diehardman in this game! That part where his character breaks down in front of Sam talking about Cliff during the ending of this game. His acting in that part was amazing! Like he was one of those characters that I was just meh on but that part made me want to care about him because of how good the acting was! But good acting aside. Something I was super excited about while watching this video was that a few episodes ago I actually was guessing, predicting and theorizing that Sam would end up being Cliff’s son or that he was the BB in the flashbacks. I was so fucking excited to find out that I was 100% right about that! YES YES YES! xD Also there is 1 line in this game that bugged the crap out of me and made me cringe so much because of how stupid it was and that’s the “Like Mario and Princess Beach” line. God I hated that line so much! xD But yeah like I said before I really liked this game. I felt I was just watching a complex artistic movie most of the time and there’s something about this game’s story and world was just constantly pulling me and I was always excited to see what happened next. :) As far as the series in general goes. I loved watching Seán play this game. His enthusiasm throughout most of these videos was extremely contagious and you can tell that he was super into this game even when it pissed him off or confused him. He even took notes to understand the story and history behind the world more. Even though screenshoting these videos took me forever because of how long these videos are I was always excited to see the next episode. There’s just something super comforting about watching Seán play this game. Like I said in the post I made about the final Luigi’s Mansion 3 video, I’ve really missed longer series on the channel. I’ve missed this old school let’s play feel from him and I think that feel is something that was really missing from his content for a while. I think these videos and series show off who Seán is as a person the best. A lot of his deeper thoughts come out in these longer videos and you see the passion that he has for video games, sound design and what goes into creating games too. It’s nice just sitting down with someone who feels like a friend for a few hours and just forget the world and go on a mini adventure with them by watching them play a game. These series become fun memories and experiences that sick with you or at least that’s what they do for me. I hope that Seán does more longer series more often and if he does. Then I’m looking forward to the next new gaming adventure, haha! :D

Another gap in posts

Hello, once again sorry I’ve not been keeping up my schedule. I haven’t actually been doing much lately as at the end of June and through a lot of this month my Switch was busted and I had to send it in for repairs. I was told they’d had to change parts and that anything that wasn’t backed up with cloud saving or on my SD card would be lost, which would include my whole Animal Crossing file, which given how long it takes to do stuff in that game was the biggest blow. However, when I got my console back, I found the data was all still on there afterall which was a huge relief. Needless to say, the advice I was given regarding what caused the issue with my Switch and which I wish to pass on to everyone I can is POWER DOWN YOUR SWITCH AT LEAST ONCE A DAY. 

I know it should be common sense, but I’m proof that’s not so common, and I’ll be making sure to do that from now on rather than just pressing the power button to put it into sleep mode or whatever it is. I got lucky but I’d hate to see others lose their Animal Crossing data (granted the deal with that is a whole other thing that I’m sure has been documented plenty of times by this point.)

Admittedly, the lack of a Switch should have spurred me on to write more posts, but I was admittedly in a bit of a sour mood due to other stuff and the Switch issue just added on top of that. I played some games on my list that I was still able to, starting Fatal Frame (I suck at horror games so that’s been progressing very slowly) and skipping ahead to games I could play on other systems like my 3DS etc. Now that I’ve got my Switch back, and finally got to play as Min Min in Smash as well as the Pokemon DLC and ARMS for Min Min and Spring Man, I’ve got more into the swing of things. Next up will be the four secret characters from Smash 64 which I’m looking forward to, starting with Luigi. The game I’ve chosen for him might not be one people would expect, but I’ll explain that more in the post. With my Switch back I’ve been getting more screenshots, including a lot of Jigglypuff from Sword and Shield which I’m planning on using for that post, so all in all I’m feeling more motivated now. I don’t want to set a date I’ll get the post done by, although I guess I should try to get something done before July ends at any rate.
