alt music shouldn't exist as a genre since you're defining yourself by something you're not and it's not even a genre at all, just the fact it's used interchangeable with and is a prefix for both punk and indie is pretty silly

#oh pop is just popular and indie is just independent but thats not really true at all. there are defining musical traits for both of those #but even if there wasnt then pop is whatevers on billboard and indie is whatevers on bandcamp. alt is everywhere and is nothing #i hate genretalk because i genuinely cant tell most genres apart but i like the fun anthropological... occurrences... related to it #like pop punk being grouped with emo even though theyre completely different styles or popular music defining pop defining popular music
