i haaaate how pretentious some motherfuckers are on this website “you bought your degree” That Is How It Works. You pay for college. you pay to learn and get a degree. hello ?

I definitely would not go over 50%. Try to keep it at 40% if you can. While I was in grad school, my rent crept up to over 50% of my salary and I had to use my savings just to buy groceries for the month. It was really hard. Good luck!!

yeah like i definitely wouldn’t want to fall into that kind of trap, but I’m struggling to estimate things like that. At 50% of income remaining (rounding amounts down for taxes), I’d have about $800/month, so like $150/week factoring in bills. Which is a reasonable amount to live off of but would mean not a lot/any going into savings.

i would do absolutely maximum of 35%, esp if you can have roommates or whatnot. an old or less nice place can be made a lot nicer, but you might not be able to make more money

I had really really really wanted to try living without roommates for the first time ever (I’m 28 and have never lived alone and it feels like... well past time) but it may come down to a nicer place with roommates or a shittier place on my own and it’s gonna be a hard choice there I think :(

I don’t think I can help much because Different Countries, but I set my bar at 50% at most - a bit more if it’s a GREAT opportunity. I always /say/ I’m going for 40-45% though, because people may be willing to negotiate (also if you say you to pay more it seems like

DAMN YOU PHONE - *if you say you’re WILLING to pay more for the place it often makes a good impression on you being generous and them sounding reasonable).

Btw it can be a good idea to find a few months sublease first, so you can meet people to eventually be roommates get a feel of the city and your spendings.

I’m not sure how much negotiating power I’ll have, especially coming from out of state, but I am an adult who’s been living on my own for over 6 years, has stable employment, and good references; which is gonna at least make me a more attractive candidate than the undergrads looking for housing, so worth keeping in mind! 

Subleasing first is a good idea but at this point I also own a lot of furniture so would have to move it all again in a few months, or rent somewhere to store it in the interim, which would also be a hassle. I was hoping I’d be able to take weekends in June to drive down and look at places in person (to move in for July) but even with things re-opening in the US I’m still not comfortable traveling like that. Maybe I’d go down once to visit one place to be sure it’s not a scam before committing but certainly not gonna be having the week of apartment tours I’d planned on in early march.

I would def try to stick at 40% or lower. You can always move to the 50% or 60% places after a year if you find you’d feel comfortable budget-wise. There’s often more variability in what’s available at a given price point than you’d think, too, so if you have flexibility, wait for a better-feeling cheaper place to show up.

That’s true about moving again to something nicer later, I gotta keep that in mind. Esspecially since it’ll be easier in a post-covid society and i’ll be able to see things in person. I do haaaate moving so would LOVE to just move somewhere I can stay for a couple years, but, good to keep in mind that I’m not actually locked in to wherever I end up. Flexibility is unfortunately low as my lease here ends at the end of July and I want a month overlap between leases to move my things to a new state since I am not allowing my parents to fly out to help me move and don’t want to ask other friends to put themselves at risk either. Since it’s a university town housing really opened up once May hit (i’ve been checking since late March) and I worry it’ll all be closed/scarce again after August too.

DONT DO CRAIGSLIST, DONT DO CRAIGSLIST. there are so many more reputable websites, even Roommates.com is better.

yeah im getting that sense now unfortunatrly. The town I live in is too small to have craigslist (the nearest city that comes up in it is 2 hours away/in a different state) so while I’ve always heard it’s a place to look for housing/etc I am increasingly skeeved out and untrusting of it. rip.

Try Facebook!! Safer than CL, and cheaper, usually.

I found 4 facebook groups last night but unfortunately it all seems to be postings for places $700-800 & up. The cheaper places don’t seem to bother because I guess they know people will come to them out of force. Well most is houses for actual sale but I did do the math on mortgage+resell vs rent and it doesn’t benefit me any more so I’m not going that route.

Does your grad school not have resources? That’s how I found my first place. Another grad student who graduated had been renting there, so I knew it wasn’t a scam or anything.

I took a look through their website a while ago but it’s focussed on on-campus housing, dormitory style. There’s some places advertised as single apartments that look to be sort of townhome style college housing,  but they’re in the 40-45% range of my income anyway, so I’m not really gaining much by that. I’ve emailed my primary advisor like 3 times in the last week bugging her about registration/class questions but I guess I should send another to her & associated advisors to ask if they know anywhere specific or if the other lab members have opinions/advice too.
