Aerith's gaze shifted from the plate to Somnus himself. He was speaking politely, in that very way he used his manners as a shield. Yet that politeness completely missed the mark.

Before dinner he had teased about being disappointed if he didn't find a new fruit or vegetable at dinner. Now he was impressed by everything, and elaborated just enough to reassure that he liked the food that had been served.

She offered him a smile. Her head tilted just-so. Whatever it was that had raised his shield, she honestly couldn't guess it. Maybe her father's teasing comments had upset him a little? She would have to ask later.

"I'm glad. I also get the feeling the kitchen is doing their best to include some familiar things for you, so if there is anything you would usually have and you're missing it, you must let us know. Okay?" It was just a light nudge. She didn't want to coddle him or make him feel in the realm of embarrassed, so she kept it simple and sweet.

The slices of the rhubarb and custard tarte were presented to them directly. No doubt the dessert had been wholly claimed, others would enjoy it too, those like Gilgamesh, or her mother's ladies maid Elmyra. While they weren't present at the royal table they were considered important both in rank and in their relationship to the royals.

"... honey cakes." Aerith commented it so suddenly to Somnus, as though it had been part of their conversation already. She glanced to him again and offered a little grin. "That's what the soldiers will be having right about now, it's their special welcome too. I saw the massive trays cooling in the kitchen. The cake is soaked in a sweet syrup so they are a sticky little delight, but I'm sure our brave soldiers will endure."

Aerith seemed less than enthusiastic about the plans ahead. Somnus… did not understand why. He glanced to her at his side for a moment. Why was she so upset about this?

Practice and training made perfect. And they would have to rely on each other’s soldiers as much as they would have to know them and their powers by heart.

The fight on their way here did not fully count in his own mind. That was… too much chaos in the night. But what she thought was his to guess.

Roran was enthusiastic, though. And it pulled a smile from Somnus – that was until the mention of noble introductions fell. Something that made his smile freeze over. He knew how to keep it and how to gloss over this. He would not utter a word or lose the look on his face for even a second. But it was there, in his eyes, in the way his fingers tightened around the fork he held. The memory of his own ‘introduction’ a few years ago. Everyone on this table had been present then, because it had been Aerith’s, too. But other than her, he had never stood in the centre of attention there.

Somnus was in his own mind and memories over this. So much so, he was torn out of it with Aerith’s question and blinked at her in quiet surprise for a moment. As if she had spoken another language he didn’t know.

“I… oh, yes. It all was impressive…”, it had been delicious, no doubt, but Somnus knew that answer was too bare.

“The little boar cubes… and the salad. And no doubt the soldiers will lick their bowls clean and ask for more of that stew.”

Especially one of them. He’d probably get his head stuck in one of the pots…

Surely the promised rhubarb tarte would have been quite the treat for the soldiers, too. But Somnus doubted Cid had made any that would last beyond those present at the table.

“Really. I feel like home already with these dishes. This is a special dinner, I know. But I do not think I have to worry about any future meals at all.”

Another perfect answer. Somnus knew he was playing a role – and Aerith could probably pick it out. She was good at that – though Somnus hoped she would simply let him. Just for now. Just as long as this dinner took. Afterwards she could ask away. Shoot holes into his behaviour.

Luckily Cid’s promised treat was brought and had the potential to distract anyone.

This is the earliest update anyone's asked about, so I'll be starting here. ALTHOUGH... I kind of dread to, because looking at old art is incredibly difficult. I'll do it-- I'll do it for you all and my love for yapping.

Director's commentary: Finding the Founding Full update <-

I was still far from good at comic making, but I was very ambitious, so although the visual story telling in this update isn't up to my standards now, there's some neat things past-Mina did.

The establishing shot is both telling and cryptic-- I'd say it leans too much towards the latter but she tried. The goal was to have enough hints to clue the viewer who knows skyward sword into the fact that this was the Goddess statue courtyard-- Which would ideally build tension. However past-Mina was too waaay too subtle. I took the liberty to edit how I'd do this panel today: having a part of the statue loom over the panel. This way even the viewers who don't remember the courtyard's birch trees can tell something big is waiting.

Altho I do like the detail that there's some wood planks in the background. Reminds the reader that this is post-game and they're doing building 💪

Groose :) The lore with the accessory that Link, Zelda and Groose wear is that he made them for the squad. The motive was actually polyamorous yearning but he's too insecure to admit it yet. You can see he wears his different and it has alternate feathers, it's like. A metaphor for self isolating or smth.👍I love Groozelink but they're not established in the time the comic takes place, so we get a longing flustered groose instead... Not that I've gotten to show that in the comic yet. Er.

At this point in the comic I hadn't settled on a consistant lineweight, and hadn't started using bold outer lines yet. So although the art isn't bad, it looks chaotic and unfinished. You can also see I was using WAY too thick of a brush for the panels and made the text too small. Gotta start somewhere, I guess!

Another ambitious panel, I was trying to have Groose's dialogue make it more poignant that the statue is BIG and STARING DOWN but the art REALLY didn't work with it. The statue looks tiiiny and besides the clouds curving into a halo it's all just a very boring image.

I super quickly threw a fish-eye-lense distortion on the panel to show something closer to what I'd wanted it to look, but didn't have the skills for at the time.

In the last segment of the update Wild has a panic attack type-o-deal which is again made less effective by the art, but past-Mina did try real hard and I respect that.

These two sets of panels were meant to be kind before-and-after transformations.

Wild going from seeing a family talk -> to the wall being torn and the tree destroyed with a guardian on the move. THEN Groose -> melting into a malice skeleton. I really don't think past me did a good job with that. I should've included more details that stayed between the two panels so they'd be more clearly connected. It's a cool idea tho, and in later updates I started to figure out how to execute cool ideas, so... Practise for the win.

Also nobody ever pointed it out at the time, but Wild's hair actually goes from the hairstyle he has in the comic to a hairstyle much closer to what he had back in the war. That and the colour fading from his eyes are deets I can still get behind whole-heartedly.

In the final page of the update there's a massive tonal shift where the art goes simple and the dialogue silly. It really depends on the tone you want for your comic, as this kind of a move can completely undo any tension you built, but in this case I think it's a very well done whiplash feel-good(ish) ending.

I think LV's updates started very amateurish, but I did seem to have a pretty good grasp on pacing and tone since the start. I'm very proud of that.

You can probably tell I don't much like this update anymore, haha. I appreciate what it meant for me back then and have nothing against people who still like it. To me its just a great example of all the things where I was falling flat when I first started.

Besides the panic attack wasn't an idea I even liked back then-- It felt like sudden unnecessary melodrama that could've easily been replaced with more nuanced emotions. However I'd seen people hype up all sorts of angsty art in the fandom at the time and felt like if I didn't put in something intense people wouldn't care about my comic. It's silly looking back-- You should be true to yourself when you make art, that way you'll like what you make and it doesn't age as poorly.

Never-the-less, the journey of making this webcomic so far has been really good for my comic skills and although I cringe at the past updates: they're still valuable stepping stones on that journey and I'm happy to look back and reflect! Thanks for requesting this update for analysis, and hope others can get something out of it too!

Gen writing update

I had a few requests come in after they closed (no worries to those who did so! I know it was a little confusing regarding such) so i'll be writing those when i get the chance and sending them out into the world, beyond that however, any request-based things are closed (for now) if I get any during this closed period I'm sorry but I'll have to ignore them/not do them. I'm too busy with life/other wips to add them to my list, sorry!

Holiday Spirit is going to be my writing focus for the next couple weeks! It's about halfway done and I'd like it finished so I can move on with things lol

Confused spirit is going to take a bit, as like i've said before I'm writing multiple chapters back to back for the purpose on ensuring proper flow/building my buffer back up, i know it's been a bit but believe me it's been on my mind guhh

but i know a lot of us alterhumans get accused of only being cool or cute animals. but my problem with that is like... what the hell even is a "cool/cute" animal? like some might answer with cats, dogs, vampires. but plenty of people think bunnies, hamsters, koalas, deer, and pigs are cute too though. some people think snakes and scorpions are cool.

+ there's "cool" animals that i rarely see here, like tyrannosaurus rex. i've seen more whales and insects than trex.

ALSO, if humans are supposedly apex predators with all this cool fancy technology, then why would i need to be a dragon? aren't humans cool enough by their own standards?

JKR actually does answer the question of "who is Snape talking to in the Order post Dumbledore's death... and it's confunded Mundungus Fletcher, on the order's of Dumbledore['s portrait.] Snape tells Mundungus things, which Mundungus will just then present as his own ideas. This is also how Snape can feed Voldemort accurate information, he's feeding his *own* ideas to both of them.

Now, would Mundungus be a more interesting character if he wasn't Confunded, and was authentically helping Snape because they had some sort of relationship? Yes, of course. It would also be much more interesting if Draco managed to talk Rosmerta into helping him, instead of Imperiusing her.

When he's talking to Harry about Death Eaters, Barty Crouch etc, Sirius is pretty clear that he's done a lot of research since he got out, and that's where his info is coming from. ("This is mostly stuff I’ve found out since I got out.") Like Azkaban seems to be set up so the prisoners are mostly in solitary. Which is horrifying, but you know.

I think this exchange from Book 6 is really interesting:

“But Dumbledore swore he was on our side!” whispered Tonks. “I always thought Dumbledore must know something about Snape that we didn’t. . . .” “He always hinted that he had an ironclad reason for trusting Snape,” muttered Professor McGonagall (...) "I mean . . . with Snape’s history . . . of course people were bound to wonder . . . but Dumbledore told me explicitly that Snape’s repentance was absolutely genuine. . . . Wouldn’t hear a word against him!”

Basically, Dumbledore never told anyone ANYTHING. He hinted, gave out as little information as possible, and leaned on his reputation. That was enough for the order, and I'm guessing the Ministry as well.

The way I see the breakdown working is this:

Books 1-4 = Snape has nebulous ties to the Death Eaters, but Dumbledore vouches for him, so he's cool. Dumbledore tells the ministry + his allies as little as he can possibly get away with.

Book 5-6 = Snape is a double agent. Dumbledore and Voldemort both think he's working for them. Draco and Bellatrix still suspect that he's loyal to Dumbledore. Lupin and Sirius suspect that he's still loyal to Voldemort. Tonks, Minerva and presumably Moody have suspicions but are tentatively willing to trust Dumbledore. Lucius and Narcissa don't care so long as Draco is protected.

Snape kills Dumbledore. Even though this was planned between them, and this is THE double agent move (kill one of your own guys to make the other side trust you) - the Order thinks he has officially changed sides.

Book 7 = Snape is at Hogwarts, presumably trying to keep things under control and minimize collateral damage as much as he can. His is getting info from/communicating info to the Order (like the strategy/date of the Battle of the Seven Potters) through a confunded Mundungus Fletcher.

dumbledore revealing Snape as his spy after the end of the first war is so interesting and so reflective of his character: it's an act of mercy and also a saw trap. BC I doubt anyone else, or any other strategy, would have been able to get Snape out of Azkaban: the other death eaters would be focused on saving their own skins, and without the protection of being a Death Eater Snape becomes just another poor half-blood, probably the exact kind of person who would make an easy scapegoat for Death Eater activity (in scapegoat terms he's just like Sirius! For different reasons obviously. See my Sirius the perfect scapegoat meta). So Snape is spared the horrors of Azkaban. BUT: Dumbledore burning Snape as a spy--in full knowledge of two things, that Snape is more motivated now than ever to attack Voldemort after Lily is dead, and that Voldemort hasn't been fully defeated, means that Snape MUST become a double agent. Otherwise he will be useless in the next conflict --a spy in Voldemort's ranks is much more valuable than another fighter, even one as skilled as Snape, and I think at this point in his life he would have wanted to cause the most damage to Voldemort by any means necessary. And being a double agent is no perfect redemption: it means having to betray both sides of the war. Snape can never be fully welcomed into the Order's side because every Order member knows he might have to get them killed so Voldemort will trust him. So by being revealed as Dumbledore's spy, Dumbledore ensures Snape will never have a full place on either side of British society.

I think pretty much most people I've consistently interacted w about this fandom I initially interacted w on AO3 first xD I just poked my nose out to find one or two people to follow so I could tap a vein to make sure a little of it would trickle across my dash, but I stay out of the big stuff. And honestly, I've not heard great things about the wider community so. I'm cool in my corner.

God the amount of filtering I do on AO3 for this fandom is truly insane. I think this is the smallest, and yet most heavily filtered fandom I have ever interacted with bc so much of the stuff produced for it I am just not interested in. it's like, YAY we're finally over 700 stories tagged! and then I filter them down and it's back to maybe 300 I've already looked at. there's clearly a 20 year old unhinged community for it, but I don't know what they're doing with their time lol

Hell, I like shipping stuff but I knew the moment my brain latched on to a middle aged woman that the shit I would want to see was never going to be a majority even among ppl who write shipping stuff. Tho honestly there is more stuff for Debbie than expected, so I guess there are enough people who appreciate her- it's still just.... such a tiny pool. I legit thought a 20 year old comic would have more fan content for it. apparently not.

Debbie's willingness to GO TO GDA HEADQUARTERS to yell at Cecil specifically, the fact she has 0 qualms about standing up to Nolan and THROWING HIM OUT OF THE HOUSE (I mean there was a lot going on in that moment but she did that!! she did that!) is like. this woman clearly has 0 concept of bad things happening to her, or at the very least, doesn't care if they do. I've mentioned it before but she really is the embodiment of 'anything could kill me. you aren't special'. I NEED more of her being wildly reckless. it's like, I don't necessarily view her as a 'I poke hornets nests for the lulz' but she is definitely someone that when a threat walks up to her she's like ??? bitch move.

God. now I'm thinking about Levy coming after her, but Oliver isn't there, and since this Clear Threat is targeting her son and she doesn't have a toddler to manage the safety of, just full on losses it on him. you want me to call my son ?? -bashes Levy's brain in with her cellphone- this woman is UNHINGED.

Her and Olga becoming travel buddies is such a fun idea. I also like the thought of her traveling being a pre-Nolan trait as much as it was a convenience thing when he was around! it all comes back around to letting this woman have interests.

I should practice storyboarding more. honestly I have a lot of fun just doing straight ahead animation experimentally and just seeing what happens without thinking too hard on things. which is fun in some aspects, not great on others. I think I tend to thumbnail and just go 'yeah this is enough information to go off of' and then sort of just make up what I need from there even in things with more specific intent lol But I can barely write off a coherent planned outline, so like, no surprise there. its why so much of the art I post is sketches. Its hard to focus for more intent/detailed pieces. you want me to think about the key poses ??? ugh. lol

Nolan actively choosing to endanger Mark (AND kid no2) is never not going to come up when I write lol I think I have multiple fic at this point where I straight up have Mark be like 'does dad love the other kid more than me bc he put me in harms way to protect them??' Like let your feelings on inadequacy boil even more!! let him resent the little fucker a bit xD

It's sort of subverted with the viltrumties somehow magically knowing about Amber and where to find her and Mark (??? HOW) so arguably they magically could have figured it out- but I genuinely think that the idea of Nolan actually living with Debbie would be so anathema to them. like yeah, maybe he got gross and fucked a human but he wouldn't LIVE with one, right guys ?? haha right ?? so you could def go for the 'prize' thing, and Nolan arguably thought he could convince ppl to let him keep her, but I think it's funnier if it is just so far out of what they perceive to be typical behavior that they wouldn't even know how to deal with the request if it came up. he gets her onboard bc they just don't have any idea how to deal with the situation. lol 'technically the rules don't say he CAN'T do it... but it seems wrong??'

The way I got caught up on our back and forth I almost forgot this, lol! AND OH MY GOODNESS, IMAGINE? I forget exactly what which point Debbie makes the beach offer, but I’d love when exactly in SU/SUF-timeline they’d go? There’s something so fucking funny to me about them going during the SUF-timeline and always narrowly missing the strange, Steven-shaped mental breakdowns in the back. I know those don’t occur in a single day, but it’s tickling me. How could they miss anything? I don’t know I just think it’s funny.

Though, post-SUF is interesting if Gems can see the similar “world on your shoulders”, Mark has going on! Steven can shunt the narrative in the Gems’ minds, which I think is neat, if I’m not misusing the phrase since the guy’s on the road far away. Or maybe it’s just before Steven goes and they stumble into each other. I’d kinda love Pearl and Debbie interacting, honestly, if they could talk about loving someone who hurt you, hide things from you, even when you thought you knew them so deeply, and they left you to raise a child. Pearl being in a well adjusted space, and Debbie still grieving.

Honestly, the gems could help train Mark, they’re got experience and similar-ish powers in strength, sturdiness, and they can jump/run fast enough for flying to be vaguely similar enough to lecture about, I think. Or Lapis Lazulis, haha! Peridot with her trash can lid! Garnet, I’d love to see if she told Mark anything about his future in vague, well meaning advice. Or even giving relationship advice considering Amber. Or, importantly, how to convince an entire reign to end their colonizing ways, lol. Is Mark perhaps willing to start a war, take advantage of being related to any leaders, or fake his own death to varying results?

In general, there’s something so fucking funny to me about Nolan, in the sake of comparison, being Pink Diamond coded. Like OH, did an important or well respected of the colonizing empire come to earth and learn the beauty of its people and nature, including faking/lying/omitting things about his identity and background to being in, only to feel conflicted when his responsibility still remained, and he tried to free himself from them? Yikes! We’ve been through that before! Like gimme Pink Diamond and Nolan outfit swap rn. This is tickling me so much oh my goodness.

Bloom and Egret meet up with the Tropical Rouge girls, and Saki has very much had it. "No more explosions! No More!"

"We ran into Michiru and Kaoru: they blew us up. We ran into the smile cures: they blew us up. We ran into Megumi: she challenged us to a game of baseball, hit me in the head, and Then blew us up."

"I'm sensing a bit of a theme here."

"And you'll never guess what happened next!"

"I saw Gelato. At last, I thought, someone sensible I could talk to about pastries."

"She blew us up," Egret finished.

The voice thundered down the corridor laden with raw emotion and Saki looked up the as another figure appeared, flurrying into view and coming to an abrupt halt before them, panting. She stopped, and stood, gathering herself up. She was imposing, all sharp edges and framed by a single jet black wing that arced over her head. A single blue eye fixed upon Cure Bloom and silence settled over the trio. Dark Precure spoke: "You're not them."

"Uh...no. Can I help you?"

Dark precure seemed to consider it for a moment, and stepped closer. "Only in the one way that any precure can."

'Huh, weird,' Saki thought. 'That sounds like Yuri.' Some of the outfit did too, echoes of the heartcatch team.

"Oh, that's cool," she blustered, "how can we-" Cure Bloom trailed off as she noticed that the other cures were nowhere to be seen, both Heartcatch and Tropical Rouge members conspicuously gone. A shiver ran up her back. Dark precure was staring at her, with that cold, single eye and Saki realised she hadn't seen Yuri. Maybe she should have listened to Erika.

Dark precure tilted her head.

"Die." And her other eye opened with a yellow flash.

Turning Yuri into Dark Precure and feeding of ALL the angst from that= YESSSSSS)

(Also, later on it's Saki who realises Cure Black and White are not themselves and steps in to meet Nagisa's attack. Her and Egret hold them off hand to hand long enough for everyone else to cotton on and help.)

(This is kinda continuing the "Lovely was never Unlovely herself but is getting turned into them here" theme. If Unlovely is the imagined dark version of Lovely, then dark precure...etc. This is also how even redeemed dark cures are dark again.)

All stars movie idea:

Big gathering of precure, big enemy. Enemy turns all the cures that were reformed villains or brainwashed back into those villains, or if the cure had defeated dark cures or dark cure equivalents, it turns them into them. A whole lot of cures are now in enemy mode and now the rest of the cures gotta deal.

Which leaves a stunning total of three teams unaffected (Grace went down bc Dariuzen was reformed- "he always was a parasite", and Dokidoki have to deal with Regina. Heartcatch aren't in mirage forms, but Dark Precure is back and that's their problem): Maho girls, Tropical Rouge, and Star Twinkle.

Maho is on damage control. La Mer is busy kicking ass, and Summer is trying to melt two frozen hearts and one angry dessert lion, and the other three are just as busy.

And the Star Twinkle girls come up with an terrible idea. As Cosmo wasn't transformed as she was never really a bad guy, they come up with the idea of making a fake villian cure in order to sneak into the villian's base and try and rescue some of the other transformed cures. With the help of Aiwan, and the reappearance of Bakenyan, Madoka becomes Luness, a moon princess with the power to turn people to stone. Ofc no-one can refute what she's saying, and they manage to hold the bit long enough to retrieve some of the cures, like Grace and Amour.

Other snippets:

Twilight back on her "You're not a princess," bullshit, and promptly getting her ass kicked by three princesses (Muse, Princess, and Majesty), before getting fish-slapped by future Queen mermaid Laura La Mer who is annoyed that Twilight is tormenting Cure Mermaid. (Twilight makes a comment about Laura not being a proper princess or queen too.)

Unlovely is back and is causing havoc, along with dark Cure Tender and Queen Mirage.

Michiru and Kaoru are back and bad

Preme is also back but doesn't seem to be inclined to fight

Heart, Peach, and Prism take their reverted Cures on one-on-one because they know they can get through to them.

Milky Rose actually gets to fight the yes5 dark cures in her cure form. She defeats dark Dream easily, but wavers at Dark Aqua

Berry and Sword vs Aqua and Beauty

"Hooray hooray everyone!", Some random dark cure: "thank you!" :) Yell: "I'm not cheering you on!"

Cure Chocolate nearly gets taken out by weird chocolate kingdom Coco

Marine loses rock-paper-scissors-water to Bad End Peace. Gets zapped.

Black and White have had their hearts frozen again, and this time their sights are set on the rest of the precure. Who don't realise what happened at first. Heartcatch and Healin Good find out what's going on.

A whole lot of team ups, working out who they need to get through to, and who they can just fight

Fortune flips Eas' fortune telling bit on her by telling her fortune instead.

Prism kinda realises that dark Cure Sky is kinda harmless, so long as no-one is trying to hurt her.

Michiru and Kaoru probably cause the biggest end game sort of problems out of all of them (them and Black and White), and everyone needs to pitch in to fight them at the end, and get through to the real enemy, some reformed form of darkness

Preme doesn't really do anything but points out to the bbeg that this is kinda what the precure do, so there wasn't ever any point in fighting in the first place

I had to deal with a lot of weird TDC fans since being in this fandom, but having a fundamentalist Christian take a panel from my very obvious MalVa ship comic and try to frame it as a friendship is a new one.

Man I don't really ship MalVa as romantically as I used to but I'm cackling.
