What is your favourite single song from a musical, and what is your favourite musical overall?
ASDJHFDSK OKAY it's so hard to pick but my favorite single song from a musical might have to be "Ballad of Jane Doe" from Ride the Cyclone. Newsies is definitely my favorite musical <3

At long last, in honor of it closing, here are my notes from Newsies UK from the June 10th matinee 😌
(I wrote these totally for myself so pardon the gushing lol but I decided to share because I’ve seen a lot of people post their notes and to reminisce!)
Under the cut because it’s loooong!
- Michael’s Jack was much more humble than I’ve ever seen Jack played. I really saw a 17 year-old kid who was just thrust into this leadership position, who was scared but excited and not sure how to approach it, especially during that moment when they lift him up during TWWK and he looked around like, “all this for me?”
- THE SANTA FE POSTCARRRRRD HOW JACK AND CRUTCHIE HAD IT AT THE BEGINNING AND THEN JACK PULLED IT BACK OUT DURINF SANTA FE
- Speaking of Santa Fe - the lighting started off with a cold, white-gray wash and shifted until there was a big yellow moon projected on the back wall - LOVED IT
- Back to the beginning - the sudden open with the blackout that snapped into the sound of a gate opening and the newsies were SURROUNDING THE STAGE
- All the chitter-chatter during the overture was so fun
- Also!! The reorchestrations??? AMAZING!! I noticed entirely different orchestrations for the overture, Seize The Day dance break, and KONY dance break, but also added drums in Watch What Happens (EPIC), strings in LFTR (heartbreaking), and something I can’t pinpoint added in OAFA (epic again)
- Crutchie’s a fellow Catholic 😌 he had a little rosary that he wore all the time, he prayed with it when the nuns came out. He wasn’t wearing it in The Refuge but he pulled it out at the very end (like scene transition) to pray again
- A NEWSIE ZIP-LINED OVER ME
- A NEWSIE SWUNG ON A LAMP OVER ME
- Crutchie had more solos in Act One, thank God
- Davey was such a NERD, his line delivery was hilarious
- Crutchie and Les’ friendship is something that can be so special, like when Crutchie was riding on the wagon during TWWK and Les was pulling it, and Crutchie poked Les with his crutch like he was a horse pulling a carriage, and then later after TWWKR, when Les started to follow Crutchie out before Davey called for him, and Crutchie gave Davey a look like, “what gives?!”
- Katherine and Jack had sO much more chemistry than I’ve ever seen. Right from the scene in the theatre booth, I could see her warming up to him, and then during the interview scene, they were literally just two kids flirting. The way Jack was awkwardly like, “can’t you see it in my eyes?” trying so hard (and failing) to be suave, and then him sing-songing, “I’d rather tell you what Iïżœïżœïżœm hoping for toniiiight?” was just hilarious, and Katherine was just smitten for all of it already. Plus, after they got together in STBI, they were so close to each other all the time, constantly hugging and teasing. It was so adorable đŸ„ș
- I want BrontĂ© Barbé’s voice
- This Katherine had the newsies’ best interest from the beginning, she didn’t start out just chasing a story. It makes me think that she interacted with them a lot before the strike, even if she didn’t know them by name
- Spot calling Jack an asshole after he betrays the newsies was iconic
- Actually Spot in general was iconic. Rather than playing her very stoic and tough, she was a leader who ate up the spotlight and loved the power she had over people. She even made Bunsen/Seitz (idk which one they kept, they removed one) cower, and she loved it. She was also very loud and boisterous, something I’ve never seen in Spot before
- H A N N A H omg Bobbie Chambers was The Hannah Of All Time. Her line deliveries were hilarious, like her mocking Pulitzer with “he got elected!” and crying on the phone at the end when she was like, “Mr. Pulitzer can’t come to the phone right now 😭”
- When one of the newsies literally jumped on another one (idk who’s who and that’s so sad, they even did a role call) with excitement when Kath said they could make the front page, and then them immediately stepping away from each other like, “we’re cool, oh yeah”
- I really liked that they had Crutchie on a few boxes on the ground surrounded by other boys leaning against it for the Refuge. I feel like that communicates the tight, uncomfortable space he’s in much better than the typical move of having him on top of the tower
- Also loved the foreshadowing to the next scene with Crutchie coughing during LFTR, then falling on his way off-stage, then Jack says how he couldn’t make it to the window
- Also!! Another Refuge inmate helped Crutchie offstage after LFTR, which was necessary due to the fact that Crutchie’s crutch was left after he was arrested (😱), but the thing that got me was that the boy with him was reassuring him that it’d be okay, and continued doing so after he fell and he helped him up
- Another lovely bit of foreshadowing: how Katherine looks toward “The World” door on “no sir, we’ll stay young forever” (she was literally talking to her daaaaad)
- Jack was ALWAYS ready to pick a fight. Like the scene where he writes “strike” on the chalkboard is normally a funny, slapstick back-and-forth, but he straight-up kicked the chalkboard writer really hard, and the writer was reeling until he was done writing “strike”. This fight-instinct made it that much more impactful when the boys want to fight the scabs and he tells them not to.
- And then his speech to the scabs was just so touching. I’ve heard that speech a million times and it felt just like the first time. When he went up to one of the newsies in particular and was like, “there ain’t no crime to being poor” and he looked doubtful and he was kinda like, “hey, there ain’t” and looked him in the eye? Powerful stuff, man.
- I loved the choice not to have Jack sing during WWHR. Katherine and Davey were comforting him during the chorus, which was so sweet.
- Similarly, Jack got choked up when he saw the amount of newsies that came to help print The Children’s Crusade and I just :’)
- Not a part of the show but BrontĂ© BarbĂ© and one of the newsies both noticed (at different times) how amazed I was by the show. BrontĂ© grinned and like scrunched her nose at me (it was during bows) and that’s just the magic of live theatre. Core memory right there
- Back to the show - Jack and Davey actually danced during Seize The Day? Iconic
- Medda and the Bowery Beauties were way more of a burlesque show than a vaudeville
- Overall, reactions were more grounded and less “Disney” than every other production I’ve seen, but they still managed to be big and theatrical. It was the perfect balance of realism and showmanship.
- The Delanceys weren’t as loud and boisterous, which honestly made them scarier
- Jack really said “but I’m pretty scared of you” and booped Katherine on the nose - precious
- Also Katherine sticking her tongue out after being like “imagine my father blissfully snoring while we take him down with his own printing press!”
- The way Davey was super excited when he found out that Jack did the painting and then looking at Jack and immediately getting all flustered and being like, “you’re really good?” Happy pride month everyone
- JACK AND CRUTCHIE’S SECRET HANDSHAKE JACK AND CRUTCHIE’S SECRET HANDSHAKE
- WHEN ONE OF THE NEWSIES MAKES ENOUGH MONEY TO GET AN APPLE, HE’S ALL EXCITED AND HE BUYS ONE, AND THEN HE SEES ANOTHER NEWSIE LOOKING SAD AND HUNGRY AND HE GIVES IT TO HIM??? đŸ„șđŸ„șđŸ„șđŸ„șđŸ„ș
- The newsies watching Medda’s show “she’s talking to me!” “No, she’s talking to me!!”
- ONE OF THE NEWSIES LYING FACE-DOWN ON THE FLOOR WHEN JACK ASKED WHO WANTS BROOKLYN
- Katherine’s spoon crown 😌
- They managed to still show the trauma Crutchie went through during the Snyder sendoff scene without changing a word! He does the whole “guess who’s back! And I brought along a little treat from the Refuge!” (Wearing the police cap) but then when he turns face-to-face with Snyder, his smile drops and he composes himself. But then he handcuffs him and kicks him off as usual 😌 but again, another example of the balance of realism and theatricality!
- It really seemed in this version, just by the line delivery and reactions, that Jack made up his mind about staying in NY long before Katherine says “you’ve got one more ace up your sleeve” and I love that

My (extensive) notes about the Newsies ensemble + secondary and background characters in the UK production
Again disclaimer, I sat in Manhattan so I am aware I missed lots of interactions between the boys but I already have a lot to say from what I saw
Also I will put race in my other post about the main characters because I have way too much stuff to say about him
Uksies spoilers below the cut
A few thoughts about the ensemble :
The level of character in this show is genuinely so good ?? Like even background newsies with little to no line still have a kind of character arc through the show
Because it's not just about what's going on "officially" on stage, it's all the little interactions they have in the background or when walking through the aisles. It's the way they hug and show affection to each other. It's the way they clearly all have preferred friendships, people they will choose to go to, even tho they are close to all the others. It's the way they run to help each other during Seize the day, the way they look so sad and betrayed when the scabs appear for the first time- And I could go on for hours about all the little interactions like those
Also they added so much stuff to give more depth to every single character ??? Like in Seize the day they all come into a triangle and say their name, and yes it's important for the strike on a symbolic level but also in the show, because they aren't just members of the ensemble. Each of them is his own character with his own personality and honestly that's really interesting and meaningful
+ this is echoed later on when the girlsies all come into a circle and say their name during Brooklyn's here (also they have their own dance break !!! Center stage !!). And the Brooklyn girls don't play a major part in the show after that song (except maybe for Spot), but here, in the same way as the boys, they get the opportunity to be seen by the audience as their own character
So yeah I could say a lot about the ensemble stuff but tbh this part was so striking to me I really wanted to talk about it because it's really beautiful and I love the fact that this was included in the show
Anyway a few of my favorite things about the secondary/background characters, in no particular order because I basically just wanted to write down my thoughts
Tommy boy < 33
If you know me you know I love him, and Jack bromage owns my heart and soul
When I talked about how background newsies get a character arc, I was specifically thinking about him. During Seize the day he is the last scab to change his mind (they gave him the "My father's gonna kill me anyway" line !!!!), and then later during the rally he is really angry and screams "WE HATE YOU" at jack at the top of his lungs. Yes he is insecure and mad at Jack because he was the one who convinced him to join the strike and now he is just giving up on them
Tommy boy okay
Also I already mentionned this but in the "who wants Brooklyn" scene he just goes lying face first on the ground and plays dead, which is even funnier because 0.0005 seconds earlier he was among the most eagers to talk to the others neighbourhoods. Comedic gold I swear
Finch
I LOVE DAMON OKAY
His mic was broken at the beginning and there was a moment of panic when he realized it but tbh he coped like a boss
Gayest Finch and I'm not sorry
When the scabs come in and he says "They think they can just walz in here and take our jobs ?", he sounds genuinely heartbroken and betrayed. Those guys are his friends and he can't believe they are doing this. Also when he was saying this line it looked like he was talking directly to one of the scabs but I didn't see which one
Henry
Update on my Henry hyperfixation : it's stronger than ever
Give me Matt's Henry or give me death
"I'M COMING RACE" Okay king
At the beginning of Carrying the banner he scratches his crotch very agressively with his towel and then proceeds to wash his face with said towel. Got quite a reaction from the audience
His attitude and costume clearly put him among the oldest boys along with Finch, Race, Specs and Albert
Before wwk it felt like he was one of the angriest about the prices, tho he also seemed quite bewildered and lost and didn't know what to do about it
His "What the absolute fuck Race" attitude during kony was extremely strong
Also him and Race seemed to be pretty close ! E.g. when the boy all come in front of the gate before wwk, he is pulling a carriage with Race on it and when Race gets down he ruffles Henry's hair, which I thought was a pretty cute detail to add
Mike
He seemed so young ??? When all the boys were discussing the strike he just looked really tiny and anxious
It has been officially established that he is among the youngest newsies and um sir. It shows.
Also he is very loud and visible. He has like 1 solo line but you can't miss him. He talks loudly, gets angry, moves a lot...
Also he goes on the zipline at the end !!
Romeo
"Me thinks the lady needs to be handled by a *snaps suspenders* real man"
Cutest Romeo I swear
Also his "thank you lady" at the beginning ? Not only was it perfect but also I'm pretty sure some of the boys winced (Mark I'm looking at you) and judging by his voice George himself was close to losing it
Overall my favorite interpretation of the character and I was really sad I didn't get to focus on him more
Elmer
Not the one I focused on the most, but Rory looked so sweet honestly !
"I dunno sister but it's bound to rain sooner or later" amazing as always
Everytime I looked at him he looked kinda happy and cheerful, elmer is and will always be the human embodiment of pure sunshine
Splasher !!!
Given that he is a new character, he was the only newsies I didn't know anything about when I came in and I immediately fell in love with him (I mean how can you not)
Okay part of it is because they gave him my favorite line of the show : "at the end of the say who are you gonna trust ? Them (affectionate) or them (derogatory) ?"
And he is genuinely so sweet ?? Everytime I looked at him he was smiling and tbh his smile his very contagious
In seize the day he is the first one to get hit by the cops (he has the line "it's about time you showed up") and um hello ??? Give this boy a hug already
Also obviously, the talent of this guy is incredible. Absolutely rocking the floor in Seize the day + he has an amazing voice !!!
ALBERT
He was ??? Perfect ??
He is loud he is arrogant he is a hothead he is a pure ball of chaos
The leg of lamb scene was legit the most ridiculously funny line delivery. He just comes stumbling on stage in nothing but a towel like "hey race guess what very interesting thing just happened to me-"
During Carrying the banner my boy was straight up ready to fight the Delanceys
"TAKE IT DOWN SHORT STOP" okay but it isn't just the voice it's the way he takes a tough pose and his whole mocking attitude toward Les. Jacob said he was trying to mimic the attitude of the Les he has in front of him and honestly, it shows
Also for anyone wondering yes the Race/Albert friendship was very present. He also seemed kinda close to Specs
Also Specs !
I didn't get to focus on him as much as I would have wanted (same goes for Mush, Jojo and Ike actually that's why I'm not talking about them here, I really hope I'll be able to look at those four more when I go back) but still
They cut "I lost my shoe" ??? The worst part is I actually knew about it but forgot so during wwk I was expecting this line and was really thrown off when they just skipped to the next lyrics
Before Seize the day when he is on look-out and Jack (?) asks if he has any news of Brooklyn he goes "no" and adds "I'm sorry". And like it's a new thing and the way he said it ??? He was so sad and hopeless I just wanted to give him a hug
Okay yes I didn't get to look at them at other moments but still huge shoutout to Josh Denyer and Arcangelo for absolutely rocking the floor during Seize the day
The girlsies < 33
I LOVE THEM ???
Their entrance was so dramatic and sassy pls
Also I will never stop talking about it but- they get a dance break !!! They get to say their names !!! They are so much more important than in any other production I love it
Also they don't just stay in their own little corner, they interact with the boys ! They all seem to be on pretty friendly terms, they talk together, hug and wave at each other...
They aren't just plot devices with one (1) dramatic scene, they are characters ! They have friends !! They have actual friendships with the Manhattan boys !! And it makes the whole Brooklyn's here scene so much more meaningful bc it really feels like they are coming to help their friends
Did I ever mention how much I love Spot ? Lillie slaying as always
She is tough she is sarcastic she is ready to kick your ass I love her
Also at some point Lillie said Spot was very close to Davey in act 2, and if I'm being honest I had some doubts about this friendship but boy oh boy I would die for them
During the rally + during and after once and for all they seem to be talking together a lot and be on very good terms which was actually pretty cool !
Okay moving on to some non-newsies characters and then I'll stop I promise
Bill and Darcy !!!
They switched the costume colors around, Darcy has a dark suit while Bill has a white one so that was a change
Also George said "My father owns the tribune" (instead of just "the trib" like I'm used to) so that threw me off for a bit but actually I liked it
Also I loved the way Alex said "And proud to be a part of your revolution !" It felt really natural and nice I love Bill okay he's so sweet
Anyway then they were just. Vibing by the printing press. Good for them honestly
The Delancey
They are literally evil. They aren't just messing around, they actually mean harm. E.g. when they are taking Jack in the cellar he just falls on the ground and they keep kicking him
But what's to like in this production is their dynamic with each other. They are extremely physical, everything they come in they are always very close, shoulders brushing or something. Also they often gently push and tease each other
Overall in this version they feel so much more like brothers, their dynamic as a family and toward the newsies was much deeper and more interesting than in any other version imo
Also they aren't just physically affectionate with each other. The three scabs ? They were comforting them and patting their shoulders before pushing them towards the other newsies. When the first scab joins the strike (I don't remember who it was), they are being very gentle with Tommy boy, from where I was it looked like they were telling him he was gonna be okay or smth
Hannah < 333
Hello ??? Bobbie Chambers I owe you my heart and soul
She was amazing pls
Extremely light-hearted and a bit sarcastic
At the end in Pulitzer's office she starts going "actually they put up a pretty good banner" and so on and then she sees Pulitzer's face and just goes *okay sorry" in the most oh-shit-don't-kill-me voice ever
Anyway every single one of her lines was delivered perfectly nothing but love for her
Finally, Medda !
Amazing as always, I feel like her relationship with Jack was really explored here !
It's the way they hug the first time Jack comes in the theater. The way she cares so deeply for him and worries about him. It's the way she looks genuinely sad about the fact he wants to go, she knows it's a bad idea and wants to hold him back but at the same time she knows it's his choice so she doesn't force him to do anything
Also the That's rich performance was pretty cool !!

(Let’s pretend I posted this on the 29th
)
It’s been one whole year since that very first newsies uk performance, the one where I sat in the hazy front most Flushing seat (AA1) tucked away with no idea what to expect but bubbling with anticipation
and despite the fact that it was very much a restricted view and I spent half the time terrified someone was gonna miss the corner whilst racing on and off stage with different wheeled objects - I look back on that performance with so much love and joy and appreciation that I got to experience it
 it was perfect.
I remember how concerned I was that I would always regret having not gotten “better” seats for that very first show - because in my head it would mean I’d miss seeing all that the show had to offer, that it wouldn’t have been the “proper” experience, that I’d have been at a loss
but I wasn’t, because with this show even if you couldn’t see the main thing, there was always something happening to engage with and hold your attention - whether it was seeable or not. Yes this show had its major moments and spectacular spectacles, but it has always been the little moments that I’ve held closest to my heart
they are what makes my mind play

That little Flushing corner was perfect for the first visit because while it still came with a few newsie interactions, it was still out of the way enough to avoid getting totally overwhelmed by them. There they could only come from one direction - meaning I didn’t need to get my head in a spin trying to catch every single thing that was going on everywhere for fear of missing something
a situation I did get myself into during one of the later visits and may have invoked a bit of an anxiety attack which lasted the full first act of the show
 that was definitely not fun
and so with the context of that experience, AA1 was certainly the perfect place to be - it gave a great view of all the immersive chaos to be expected in those more central seat without getting lost within it. I may have only sat in those seats once but I really did love them and am still strangely attached to them
 is that weird? Probably.
Though I will say that it is absolutely ridiculous that I spent the entire show sat in that seat and never once realised there was a slide right next to it
it wasn’t until the next day when I was sat up in Manhattan that I noticed and by extension realised what all those noises were whenever anyone went up there
absolutely ridiculous! Seriously, I can notice the tiniest detail all the way over on the other side of the stage but a very loud obvious something that’s happening right next to me
 and I’m totally oblivious
 đŸ€Šâ€â™€ïž
Anyway
Happy anniversary Newsies uk, thank you for the joy, the community and the inspiration, you reignited a bit of life back into me and I’ll always be grateful for that! We miss you Newsies, so so much, please come back soon

My Top Theatre Highlights and Moments of 2023 (in no particular order)
Mary Poppins final show in London
So my first trip of the year saw me pop on down to Cherry Tree Lane for the final show of Mary Poppins. The show is so dear to me, I grew up with the film and the musical has become a firm favourite. To be in the audience for the final show was very special and to witness and be part of the standing ovation at the end of Step In Time was magical and a moment I won’t forget. Zizi and Charlie were the perfect Mary and Bert and delivered outstanding performances, along with the whole company.
New York - the OG trip
Now this was an insane trip. New York has always been on my list of places I wanted to visit. I mean it’s home to Broadway and being the absolute stagey bean I am, I was naturally going to visit at some point.
Had a some trials pre going though. So me and Sarah were originally going to see Kinky Boots as I was desperate to see Danielle Hope as Lauren in the show. Also Kinky Boots is just one of those shows which is so good for the soul. Then it got announced it was closing early. Okay. Sad but plenty of shows to still see. So we booked Almost Famous. Now I didn’t know anything about it to be honest other than it had Chris Wood in it and I’d seen him in some tv shows and was like, it would be awesome to see him live and in a musical. That show closed early. I was starting to feel like this trip was cursed or I was. Haha. So me and Sarah had chats and we came to the decision that we would see Wicked as it was Brittney’s last show as Glinda during our trip so we kind of had to. We also were able to get tickets for the Behind The Emerald Curtain tour which they do and it was luckily on when we were there. We also booked Moulin Rouge as I really wanted to see Derek Klena as Christian and we both were keen to see Hadestown as our Broadway exclusive show. We both wanted to see a show in New York we couldn’t see in the UK. We also visited the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island which were so interesting and rich in history. The Museum of Broadway was a MUST visit for me and Sarah. We did that on our first day in New York and it really set up our trip so nicely. They have a Playbill room which is a really good visual indicator of what is currently on on Broadway. Also I fully made sure to have a lil photoshoot with the Nederlander playbill sign. (Sarah was SO THRILLED that I fully took 10 minutes for my photoshoot) nothing was currently playing at the Nederlander when I went or else I would have fully seen whatever was in at that time. (For context - the Nederlander theatre was home to Newsies when it was on Broadway)
The Museum of Broadway had so many artefacts and exhibits from so so many shows. I saw a pair of shoes which were worn in the original Broadway production of Grand Hotel. A stack of Newspapers from Newsies. But the most insane thing which they had was a model of the Gershwin Theatre. Stage, dressing rooms, front of house. THE MERCH DESKS. LIKE ACTUAL MODELS OF THE MERCH DESKS. Safe to say me and Sarah lost our damn minds over this model. I also didn’t realise that my theatre collection was missing a model Merch desk so that is something I need in my life!!
Hadestown - this was our first show and it seemed very fitting that our first show on Broadway was a Broadway exclusive. I knew nothing going in and it can be a risk as I may have sat there so confused but I sometimes think going in knowing nothing is great as you can just sit and enjoy. My mind was blown. The performances from the whole company were outstanding. It felt very much like they moved as one and the roles were equal. It was very special to watch such an ensemble piece, it’s quite rare to come across a show like that. It was so great to see Eva Noblezada on stage again, gorgeous vocal from her and she absolutely stole the show for me. All I’ve Ever Known had me transfixed and her and Reeve Carney performed so beautifully opposite each other.
Hadestown is currently playing at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway and will be opening at the Lyric Theatre in London’s West End in February with Previews beginning on the 10th.
Moulin Rouge - now do you remember me saying we booked as I wanted to Derek Klena as Christian? Well it was announced he was taking a sabbatical from the show for another role and Aaron Tveit was returning to the role for that time. Now sad I wouldn’t see Derek, super exciting to see Aaron who originated the role in the musical but I was concerned. Like most people on the planet I’d seen the Les Mis movie where Aaron played Enjolras and he was outstanding. Loved him in the role as the blonde charismatic revolution leader, like absolutely in awe of his performance and talent but I was concerned I wouldn’t feel the same watching him perform live. Weird as that is I know. Honestly though, SO GLAD I got to see him live in the role. I didn’t think it was possible to be more in awe of someone but here we are. Aaron blew me away. Roxanne. DAMN. đŸ”„đŸ”„ Speechless. The whole show. Vocal. Phenomenal. Acting. Masterclass.
Ashley Loran as Satine. Omg I didn’t know perfection existed until I saw her in the role. She came down on the swing for Satine’s entrance and my jaw hit the floor. What. A. Vision. Such a presence. Dancing was incredible, she led the company in Satine’s opening number wonderfully. So playful. Gorgeous vocal throughout the show and every time she sang I got goosebumps. Powerhouse!! Again. A Masterclass in acting and what a leading lady.
Ashley and Aaron were insane together. The Elephant Love Medley which closes Act One, is my favourite moment in the show and they did not disappoint. They melted my heart and played opposite each other so beautifully. This show was my trip highlight and those two solidified it with their performances.
I didn’t expect to leave with adding two Broadway performers to the stagey favs but here we are. đŸ€·â€â™€ïžđŸ€Ș
It was weird sitting in the theatre before the show started and looking at the set as it felt like I should be watching the London company but I was gonna be seeing the Broadway company. The strangest feeling. Haha.
Moulin Rouge is currently playing at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Broadway and at the Piccadilly Theatre in London’s West End.
Behind the Emerald Curtain - this is something which is exclusive to Broadway. We don’t have anything like this in the UK. It was a behind the scenes talk and Q and A with a couple of the cast members of the show. We got to see how the show was put together and then see a few of the costumes and props up close and we could actually touch the costumes. It was such an insightful experience, so the Tony winning Elphaba dress (you know the one!) - the colours in it represent that Elphaba is a child of the earth. Would recommend anyone checking it out if you’re in New York and this is on when you go.
Wicked - now it’s always special to be in the audience for a cast change or a performer’s first or last show. Me and Sarah were lucky enough to be able to go to Brittney’s last performance as Glinda on Broadway. This concluded the shows we saw on this trip and we couldn’t ask for a more fitting show to end it with.
Brittney was INCREDIBLE. From start to finish. Breathtaking. She absolutely stole the show, as she should. Comic timing was outstanding, the vocal. Oh my. Goosebumps. It felt like I was watching a piece of magic up on that stage and not a dry eye in the house.
Wicked is currently playing at the Gershwin Theatre on Broadway and at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London’s West End.
On this trip I got to meet one of my best friends irl. It was so lovely to see Shelbi and explore New York and also to meet the New York pogo squad. Shoutout to those guys. Looking forward to seeing them again when I’m next in the city!
Shelbi took me to Grand Central Station and oh Lordy it was so pretty. She also showed me Bryant Park and the Library. We also ended up in Theatre Circle, which we stumbled across accidentally when we were hanging out. Theatre Circle is a Merchandise shop opposite the Majestic Theatre (where Phantom was on Broadway) so NATURALLY we had to go in and have a look. What happened? Well I basically had a breakdown and was nearly in tears as I found a bit of Newsies Merch in there đŸ€ȘđŸ€·â€â™€ïžđŸ™ˆ long story short RE Merch shops, this one, Broadway Up Close and the one Araca owns on Shubert Alley, I’m basically going with an empty suitcase to fill up next time as I’ve got my eye on a lovely Beetlejuice hoodie which looks like the cosiest thing ever!!
Blood Brothers
It’s always a treat to see this show again. This time it was on my home turf at my local theatre I saw the show. I went to see Richard Munday as the Narrator in the show. One of my favourite performers in an iconic show as my favourite character. No way was I going to miss this and it didn’t disappoint. Richard was insanely good. Strong vocal, excellent acting. I’m getting chills just remembering how good his performance was. It was also so lovely to see him on stage again and to say hello after so long!
Strictly Ballroom the Musical
When I say it was a show 3 years in the making I am NOT joking. Haha. Me and Sarah had this booked literally in 2020 so it took some time to see it đŸ€Ș🙈
Absolutely worth the wait though. Kevin Clifton as Scott Hastings was such a perfect casting for the role. Faye Brooks as Fran. FLAWLESS!! Outstanding choreography, brilliant performances and to be front row for it was mind blowing. York is such a beautiful city so getting to have a wee adventure up there and to go to the most magical place ever (the place where you can get a roast dinner in a massive Yorkshire pudding. Honestly, heaven!) was so lovely. I’ll deffo be back in York, even if it’s just to go for a roast đŸ€Ș
Newsies
Now you could argue that I spent most of my free time at the Troubadour Theatre seeing Newsies in 2023. And you wouldn’t be wrong 😜 ZERO REGRETS HAD!!
From my birthday, to one of my best friends: George’s birthday, to cast change, to the final show at the Troubadour and many many trips in between. So many moments and highlights to talk about so will try and condense as much as possible. Sitting front row of Brooklyn for George’s birthday was pretty damn special. Getting to see the show from so close, to say it was magical would be the understatement of the year.
So many outstanding covers I was able to see throughout the run. Bobbie Chambers as Katherine, Damon Gould as Davey, George Crawford as Jack, Matt Trevorrow as Jack, Morgan Gregory as Race are five which stand out to me. It was a pleasure to see the Newsies company so many times. To be there at Cast Change for Newsies felt so special, having been there at the their first show so to be there at the last was lovely and very full circle.
I will say the first show I saw after Newsies won Best Choreography at the Oliviers was so so special. Seize The Day is my favourite song in the show and choreographically it’s stunning, I did tear up seeing the lads perform it for the first time. They gave so much in the whole show but in that number especially. They deserved to win the Olivier so much.
The final show. Holy shit. That was out of this world. I thought the first show was insane. Closing night was next freaking level. Every number. Standing ovation. Seize The Day Standing Ovation went on for so long you could see it in the boys' faces it meant so much and they gave it their all in that number. I was so thrilled BrontĂ© got a standing ovation for Watch What Happens. Gorgeous performances from the whole company. It was a magical night and I can’t thank this company enough for every show they did. This show holds such a special place in my soul (yep soul) and I will forever be grateful to each company member.
I do want to give a special shoutout to Sam Bailey who portrayed my favourite Newsie, Specs, so wonderfully. He took such brilliant care of him and was the perfect Specs. In Seize The Day Sam shouts ‘boys’ when the lads start to walk away during the number and it broke my heart every time. Such a lovely lovely touch.
I can’t wait to see what happens next for this show but until then I’ll carry the banner in my heart until the next bunch of Newboys bring it to life on stage again â˜șïžđŸŽđŸŽ¶đŸ’›đŸ—žïžđŸ“° hashtag Newsies Forever
New York part 2
SOOO
Went to New York again. Hehe 🙊 another super fun trip exploring the city. I know I could never get bored of this city as there is just so much to see, do and explore. Like London, I will never get tired of New York. This trip was a little more flexible in terms of seeing shows what day. I had my list I wanted to see but I only pre booked Hadestown for the first night in New York (which idiot thought that would be a good idea to see a show after an 8 hour flight? This one right here 🙈🙈) it was so lovely see the Hadestown Broadway company again and they were just as phenomenal as the first time I saw them.
Sweeney Todd - now as a young British theatre fan I came across this show called Wicked. I don’t know if you’ve heard of it. đŸ€·â€â™€ïžđŸ˜œđŸ™Šâ˜ș but I watched a lot of Bootlegs of that show and others. Lots of great shows out there. Now for me I watched a certain bootleg with Annaleigh Ashford as Glinda and oh my word. She blew me away. She instantly became one of my stagey favs and I knew I wanted to see her perform live. So in 2020 (remember that crazy year?!) Sunday In The Park With George was going into the Savoy Theatre and Annaleigh was coming over to be in the show. Then the craziness happened which meant the show was cancelled and it never came to be. I was gutted as I thought I’d never get the opportunity to see her perform live. It was announced she was going to be in Sweeney Todd as Mrs Lovett and I was like 👀 will this happen? Will I get my chance? In my February trip I had photos with her production shot outside the theatre (I theatre girl nerded HARDDDDD. Haha) and was like this is probably gonna be the closest I get. I had no idea I would be back in New York in less than 3 months with the aim and determination to see her perform live.
I dragged my friend out to dayseat for tickets. We were first in the queue at 6:45am (Starbucks opened at 6:30am or else we’d have been there earlier). No one was going to get in my way from securing a ticket to see the show. Now obviously it’s a risk as per the terms and conditions ‘the producers can not guarantee the appearance of any performer due to illness and/or holiday’ but I was risking it. Fast forward to the box office opening and they still have seated tickets to sell before standing tickets could be sold (that’s what we were queuing for). Me and my mate were deliberating the $99 tickets in the Mezzanine when the box office clerk says she’s got a pair of tickets in the orchestra stalls for $69. Sold. I’ve never been so excited before in my life. I didn’t need to stand, which my friend was super happy about and I had a ticket to see Annaleigh perform live. I was BUZZING and had a rush of adrenaline. I was soaring the whole day. When it came to showtime, I want to briefly discuss the Merch stand. Bloody good display and such an excellent range of Merch. The hoodie was purchased, naturally (is anyone surprised??). The show blew my mind. The whole company was just outstanding. It was all so fluid and flowed wonderfully. The opening set the scene and it made me so happy to see Josh got a cheer on his entrance and when it came to Annaleigh’s entrance I was gonna cheer for her (thankfully I wasn’t the only one) and I had the BIGGEST smile on my face every time she was on stage. She stole the show for me (this surprises no one) but she was always going to command my attention. Excellent acting, vocals were insane. Loved the on stage chemistry her and Josh had as Mrs Lovett and Sweeney Todd. She was EVERYTHING and then some live. I’m so thrilled I got to see her perform live. Big bucket list item ticked.
I will say this one thing I ADORED about the show (I’m hoping they bring this production over) - when Mrs Lovett was telling Sweeney essentially his story it was all done in shadow up on the walkway above them which was simple but oh so effective and it really stuck and stood out in my mind. The set was so so good. Overall I’d go as far to say it was a perfect production from casting, choreography, set, everything. Also I’m gonna go and say it - Annaleigh was robbed of the Tony. In my mind that is.
Sweeney Todd is currently playing at the Lunt Fontaine Theatre on Broadway and stars Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster as Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett from February 6th.
Shucked - so this an interesting story. Me and my friend dayseated for Shucked. Now I wasn’t sure what to expect to be honest or how I’d fare with a show about corn. This is a bit of an odd tradition but basically if a show is in the Nederlander Theatre on Broadway I would see it regardless if it was a play or a musical. The Nederlander was home to Newsies on Broadway but I thought with that tradition it would be a great way to see shows which I wouldn’t necessarily automatically see. So anyway, went to the show and oh my goodness. Me and my friend turned to each other at the interval and we both went we love it. Really enjoying it and it was only the interval. It wouldn’t have even been on our radar to see it had it not been in the Nederlander so it was one of those lovely surprises. I came out of the show so so obsessed with it. It was a fun show with a lot of heart and soul. So comical and the ending (which I will not spoil) I did NOT expect. It was brilliantly written, hilarious, expertly performed by the whole company. If there was time I’d have absolutely seen it again had I had another night in New York.
Shucked has closed on Broadway but it’s due to be coming over to the the West End, I personally can not WAIT to get Shucked in London. Shucked is also due to be a feature film so keep ya eyes peeped for that. It’s not to be missed!!
Moulin Rouge - yep. I went back and saw the show on Broadway again. Derek Klena had returned to the show and I was determined to see him as Christian. I wasn’t going to miss this opportunity. I booked a ticket for the Saturday night performance the day I landed in New York. (I got into New York on the Wednesday) I must have looked absolutely crazy, 8 hours on a flight and a bit frazzled and I literally couldn’t have made it clearer to the box office person that I wanted to see Derek in the show. I must have checked that he was scheduled to be on at least four times. I didn’t fly over 8000 miles again to not see him in the show. Haha.
Again for context - way back when, I had watched a bootleg of Derek as Fiyero in Wicked and listened to his vocals in Anastasia so I was aware of his work. Like with Annaleigh I really wanted to see Derek perform live. He was every bit as phenomenal as I thought he would be and more. The vocal. THE VOCAL. I can’t express the goosebumps I got every time he sang, Elephant Love Medley melted my heart and Roxanne. ROXANNE. It was like my heart was ripped out and stamped on and crushed and I was so happy about it. Derek was outstanding as Christian and so so worth the wait to see him in the role.
I do also want to give a special shoutout to the lovely Sophie Carmen-Jones who was Nini. Having seen her in London many times it warmed my heart so so much to see her as Nini on Broadway, it felt like there was a little piece of home. Sophie was flawless, as she always is. Stunning performance.
Derek Klena returns to the role of Christian on Broadway from February 6th alongside Courtney Reed as Satine (so keen to see them together. Know they are gonna be fire!!)
Operation Mincemeat
Now whilst I’ve technically seen this show twice I only really remember the second time properly. I got very distracted during Act 1 of my first visit so went back to watch the whole show and to not get distracted by anything I sat front row of the stalls, naturally.
I had the same company both trips aside from who was playing Montague. I had Natasha the first time and the second time I had Holly.
Now this show really caught me by surprise. I thought I’d go in, see it, come out and be like. That was nice. Enjoyed it. probably won’t see it again. How VERY wrong I was. I’m literally obsessed with it. The talent in that company. Off the charts. Dear Bill gets me every time and not a dry eye in the house. Making A Man and Useful are two of the songs I’ve played the most of the whole soundtrack. Comedy which then delivers hard hitting emotion. I can’t sit through the ending without crying.
Sitting front row and getting to see the emotion and facial expressions and performances from so close was incredible. I will say Holly absolutely stole the show for me. I couldn’t take my eyes off her and Making A Man had my jaw on the floor.
I do also want to say I didn’t have my programme when I saw it the second time so at the interval I turned to my friend George and go ‘Monty is brunette this time. They were blonde last time’ George ‘is that all you noticed?’ Me ‘yeah
’ George ‘anything else? Like the fact it’s a DIFFERENT PERSON’ Me 😳😳🙈🙈 so then we went on a Google and discovered I’m an idiot! Excellent casting though with Natasha and Holly is what I’m taking from it. đŸ€Șâ˜ș you MUST go and see this show. Beg, borrow, steal a ticket to see this!
I’m currently working out when I can see it again.
Operation Mincemeat is currently playing at the Fortune Theatre in London’s West End.
Mates in Chelsea
So my final show of the year was a new play, Mates in Chelsea at the Royal Court which I was able to see three times. A play Anne? Are you feeling okay? If I said the name Natalie Dew would it all make sense? 😜 hehe
Yep. This was the first time I was getting to see one of my stagey faves perform LIVE. It had been four years since I saw Nat perform on stage so I was thrilled to be able to see her in this, quite genius play. I throughly loved it. It was funny, heartfelt and at the end it really made me think. Also got quite confused during the second act when we were seemingly in Russia? Don’t worry fam. It all made sense in the end but I was FULLY confused for the whole monologue.
It was so so great to see Natalie on stage again, and in ways I hadn’t seen her as before. I jumped out of my seat every time her character told their boyfriend to ‘sell the fucking castle’. I don’t own a castle but every time my first thought was ‘must sell my castle for Nat’ đŸ€Ș🙈
Phenomenal performances all round from the whole company but nothing made my soul happier to see Nat on stage again. Truly ended my year in the best way possible!
So that pretty much wraps up an insane year of theatre for me. Never did I think I’d be discussing TWO trips to New York in one blog post. Hey, at least I can say ya girl was well travelled for the theatre in 2023.
If you’re still here, thanks for reading, apologies for the lateness and make sure to come back next time to see what makes the cut and where adventure took me in 2024

Until next time, cheerio!

Newsies Review
Review of Newsies watched at the Troubadour Theatre, Wembley on the 14th May 2023. A Disney and Runaway Entertainment Production. Directed and choreographed by Matt Cole, designed by Morgan Large, with music supervision by Nigel Lilley.
‘Newsies?’ More like ‘no thank you.’
For a production funded and produced by Disney, I have to say I was thoroughly disappointed. There’s no point beating round the bush
I couldn’t wait for the show to end. Where did Newsies go wrong? Where didn’t they go wrong would be more apt.
Musically, it just didn’t make sense. For a majority (if not all) of the musical numbers it seemed like the company were singing something different to what the orchestra were playing.  One number sounded as if all the company were singing something different to each other ‘’let’s all improvise and see if anyone notices’’. We did. Credit to the few songs that sounded ‘Sondheim-esque’ and evoked a taste of the late-great composer. Sadly, they were few and far between, and the ones that did crop up felt like they’d been composed by a B&M Bargains-Sondheim (a reference to a UK discount shop for my international readers!) rather than the real deal. Maybe it’s because everything sounded tinny and echoey, maybe that’s the reason I didn’t like the numbers. Or maybe it’s because the songs weren’t good, I’m open to suggestions.
An Olivier Award for best choreography in the bag, ‘‘the dancing must be fantastic’’ I hear you say. Well, it is for the first five minutes anyway, past this point it all becomes very repetitive. I was aching for a tap-dance in the first act (as a tap-dancer myself I’m very partial to a tap-routine) when we got to said tap-dance in the second act
well I’ll leave it at that. I can’t help but think that the choreography, overall, needed calming down. With too many people on stage it became very hard to locate the focal point of the scene, with a bit of tightening up a lot of choreographic muddles could have been sorted out.
Unfortunately, the script, the fight scenes and the performances all added to my misery. I won’t single performers out, that wouldn’t be right, I will say there were no standout performances and a few people that perplex me as to how they got through auditions. It didn’t feel like a professionally produced piece of theatre, more a final showcase at a drama school, highly embarrassing when you consider some tickets going for £106.
Scenically, the Troubadours been transformed, certainly evoking a New York Suburb. For the most part though the set design was uninspiring: a messy, moving, metal framework transporting us from location to location. Wheely tables and bentwood chairs (I hate bentwood chairs with a passion!) brought on for scenes in restaurants. Again, nothing spectacular, more drama school showcase. The few times where people ziplined in and swung about on ropes (for no apparent reason) did little to add to my enjoyment and surprisingly had the opposite affect working only to enrage me.
I could go on, but I think I’ve said enough. Really bad all throughout. In the end Newsies gets a wombat rating of:
1 Wombat 'It was awful'

idk if the newsies fandom is still active on here bUT I saw the new London production on Saturday (Dec 3rd) and need to share my thoughts bc THIS SHOW -
apologies in advance for the amount of fangirling i'm about to do. also this will probably be very long so prepare yourselves
Tumblr media
so newsies is my absolute favourite musical and I actually can't believe I got to see the first professional UK production - not only that, I also got to finally meet my best friend who I met through the show! we also made a new friend whilst in the merch line - and another two at stage door after the show. it was so cool to be around other fans of the show!
and wow - I was completely blown away. guys, the choreography for seize the day and king of new york is out of this world, I was in awe the whole time. and the end of once and for all, oh my god. 3 standing ovations as well! (two in seize the day, and during the curtain call/bowsies)
the talent in this show is unreal; michael ahomka-lindsay and bronté barbé were really great as jack and katherine, I really enjoyed their portrayals of the characters and they both have great voices. moya angela was amazing as medda, she wore this beautiful outfit during 'thats rich' that matched what the bowery beauties were wearing, which I really liked, and she had a really nice voice. matthew duckett was great as crutchie, and yes letter from the refuge made me cry. my favourite character portrayal was probably ryan kopel, there was just something about how he plays davey that i loved, and he understood the assignment with poor guys head is spinning which made me very happy.
there were also three swings performing; bradley trevethan as elmer, jordan isaac as romeo, and zack guest who made his finch debut, and they were all amazing!
honestly I could watch those boys dance forever.
the cast made great use of the large space they've been given, there were some walkways that were used in various parts of the show, such as during brooklyn's here with the different boroughs, and the cast going into the audience (such as going up/down the main stairs) makes the show really immersive.
brooklyn were all girlsies. and they had a dance break during brooklyn's here. there was one brooklyn girlsie who had her arm in a sling and her name was splint.
new things they added/details I noticed and really liked were:
‱ les was actually involved in king of new york
‱ katherine wore a lady liberty crown made out of spoons at the end of kony which I loved
‱ race's cigar actually smoked
‱ there was a little bit at the start of the show, before santa fe prologue, which showed the newsies trying to sell papers
‱ jack had a small photo of santa fe in his pocket which he was looking at during santa fe prologue, it was a small detail they added that I absolutely loved
‱ during the 'world will know' scene where they're going on strike, katherine is on one of the walkways (the one closest to where we were sat) watching, which I really liked as her then wanting to help the newsies made more sense as she watched them declare their strike
‱ there was (at least to me) a small homage to the 1992 movie - during seize the day, they knocked over one of the newspaper carts and started ripping up the papers
‱ jack did a full on like tarzan swing from a rope (that seemed to appear from nowhere) during the fight scene, les went to do the same thing but davey was like 'um no get down'
‱ jack was in the seize the day dance break, and he was really good!
‱ he gave katherine a newsie cap in the finale it was so cute
the newsies were used for a lot of scene changes, specifically for when props needed to be brought on stage. my favourite one was when katherine said 'thank you' to the two newsies who brought her desk and chair on for watch what happens. (sidenote, if you're sat in manhattan, you walk under the stage and get to see all the props which was so cool)
we stage doored after the show and it was so cool, we met michael & bronte (who we actually also met before the show), matthew and ryan, and they were all so lovely!
the best piece of live theatre i've ever seen, it was like nothing i've ever experienced.

Okay, modern high school newsies hc time
There's always multiple people that do the same thing and either fight over who can do better or work together
Like, Race and Davey are rap kings. Race writes the raps(Dave looks overthem and makes adjustments sometimes, but over all there rly good) and davey will rap them. Fast
Their also on the slam poetry team at the school
Mush and jack have friendly competition over who can get first on art stuff.
Mush keeps track of how many times he's won. 6 times. Out of 13. That's...good
Specs and blink and the resident beat boxers of the whole school. They have battles and do duets(however that works??)
Spot and crutchie always sing together. Spot sometimes plays guitar or crutch will play uke while they sing.
But oh boy
crutchie has the voice of an angle. Like, everyone goes silent when he sings. It's one of the only times he's really confident.
Spots voice is really scratchy, but it still sounds rly good and he sings alto while crutch takes soprano
Kath and Dave run for newspaper officer all the time for the school press
Sarah and Race always try to see who can eat more hot pockets in one minute
So far, Sarah has won with 14 hot pockets in a minute. Everyone's confused on how she does it, but no one asks questions.
All of the friends are in drama club and are in the theater class because Medda is the best teacher ever(even cooler than the band and orchestra teachers[i'll talk about them next])
Kath is in the school band(oboe) along with jack(trumpet), Romeo(flute) and kid blink(tuba) and they always talk about how cool the band teacher is
Race(bass), buttons(violen), mush(cello), specs(viola), and dave(violen) are all in orchestra and fight the band kids on who's better: band teacher or orchestra teacher(ps, orchestra teachers supper chill, like, to the max so he wins.)
Race also plays bass guitar too on his own time
He lives at Medda's place with jack, Spot (who were adopted), and Crutchie(Medda found him as a little kid on the side of the street and was like "this is mine now" and took him home. He's technically not her son)
Race lives there bc his dad kicked him out for being gay and trans
He immediately went to Medda and she opened her doors to him. She's cool mom
Race and Spot share a room and there's a trans flag and a gay flag on their walls
Kath, Dave, Sarah, and Les are the rich ones, but they don't brag abt it. There cool.
some how, al and les became besties and whenever they all go out to do something Albert has to watch les(but he doesn't mind)
Specs and Romeo walk down the hall together a lot bc they have mainly the same classes(and there lockers r right next to each other's) and they blast "Jesus take the wheel" every day.
Everyone's ring tone for jack is "country boy, I llooove yooouu... bLEh" and he HATES IT
Even Medda has it
One time Spot and Elmer got suspended for a week because they saw the delancey brothers picking on smalls and they beat the crap out of them.
Crutchie has had a crush on jack for years but doesn't tell anyone but Spot bc Spot and Crutch are besties
Race and Crutch are the only ones that know that Spots real name is Sean. Everyone else thinks it's Richard
Everyones reaction to that name is "of course it's Richard."
Well, Medda knows it's Sean too, but that's bc she adopted him soooo
Elmer's parents force him to go to church
Spoiler, he doesn't like it
Crutchie is proud ace and everyone knows it and supports the little ball of sunshine
Les and crutch play those hand games all the time, sometimes al and buttons join in too.
Buttons knows how to sew, thats how he got his nickname
He once made a really pretty dress for Medda and she loved it.
Romeo brings extra food bc he knows all his friends love his moms cooking and they forget their lunches all the time
Davey, Sarah, and les's mom can cook rly well too
JoJo "forgets" his lunch all the time and has to get food from them
Race has stopped smoking, but he now vapes
Tommy boy never really knows what's going on but everyone loves him still
Finch is on the archery team
spot's in the debate club
Race is on the track team
they all are a part of the GSA in the school and made t-shirts for it
That's all i got
Sorry this was rly long but i hope u have a v good day

Meaningless Time
It’s a...Tuesday? I think? In the summer? I do know that it’s August, because I moved back to the States on August 1st. So I’m also completely jet lagged and I don’t have any sense of the time of day. To add to my confusion/displacement, I’m staying in my childhood bedroom at my mom’s house which has remained relatively unchanged since the mid-90s. (Case in point, my sister and I still refer to one of the bathrooms as “the new bathroom” although it was renovated in 1995.) So every day I wake up at about 5am craving enchiladas, and unsure about what decade it is, and where I am in my life. But I don’t think this is a unique problem. I assume that most of you are feeling aimless, unsure of the day of the week, and perhaps craving enchiladas at whatever hour you awaken. All of the “normal” markers of life are gone. Seems like a good moment to do a deep (medium?) dive into songs about time.
Time (Clock of the Heart) - Culture Club
[This is Karen’s only entry because not only is time meaningless, but I can’t remember any songs I have ever heard at all over the last 44 years.]
I go through periods every few years where all I want to do is listen to this song on repeat and start crying a little bit when actual chiming reminiscent of a beautiful yet merciless clock gently starts up during the chorus, and if that’s not something you can relate to, I guess you probably didn’t grow up waiting to just get to the part when you’re an older yet wiser divorcee in a peignoir with a high rise apartment featuring large windows to knowingly gaze out of over a twinkling cityscape as a saxophone solo wails in the background.
Well, some of that has come true for me, but not most of it, but luckily there’s always SOPHISTI-POP to help me cut to that feeling. According to Wikipedia, this is a term applied retrospectively to music “that emerged during the mid-1980s in the UK which incorporated elements of jazz, soul, and pop.” To me it’s songs that came on Top 40 radio after my mid-1980s bedtime of 8:00 pm so I had to listen to them on my clock radio stashed under my pillow and fantasize as detailed above and also something about impatiently taking off a large clip-on earring to answer the phone.
This feels like a love song but it’s actually a giant dis and a meditation on the sunk-cost fallacy of long-term relationships that are dead in the water. “Time won’t give me time / And time makes lovers feel / like they got something real / but you and me we know we got nothiiiiiiiiiiin’ but time.” At first it feels romantic--we’ve got nothing but time, baby, time to spend together in this beautiful partnership. But wait a minute. Time makes lovers feel like they have something real, but in this case the lovers have...nothing but time. That’s it. Time and nothing else is what’s keeping them together. The charming chiming is actually signalling the death knell of a relationship. “Time won’t give me time.” Isn’t that the truth? Also: an excellent saxophone solo.
Time Passages - Al Stewart
I always get Al Stewart and Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics mixed up. (I know, I know.) This song is actually pretty boring: a perfect fit for this period of ongoing malaise. The experience of listening to it is the equivalent of not listening to anything. It also seems to go on forever, clocking in at 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
There’s a seemingly endless youtube video someone made which pairs the song with just pictures of sunsets and skies. It’s exhausting and somehow irritating to watch. I think it’s supposed to be relaxing?
youtube
There’s also a weird screaming instrument (or person) at just about the halfway point. So, it turns out I hate this song. I didn’t know until I started this entry. I learned something new about myself today. If you want everyone to die of boredom, you could sing this at karaoke. Actually, that would be a great idea for a room full of drunk kickball players. Please someone take me up on this challenge when and if we can ever safely gather again.
Breathe (2 AM) - Anna Nalick
I don’t know where Anna Nalick came from or where she went after she wisely cautioned us all to “just breathe” at 2am when we are waking up in a cold sweat and calling her for advice. Actually, at 2am I haven’t gone to sleep yet. I’m likely doing one of the following: having a debate with myself in my head about whether or not I should just give up sleeping and start a movie; deciding if it actually matters if I brush my teeth; wondering what things are plugged in that shouldn’t be; and/or mentally cataloging every boy I ever kissed. Also if someone called me at 2am I would scream. I’m calling BS on Anna Nalick actually picking up. At any rate, she is a really good friend to even consider answering the phone at that hour. Also maybe put your phone on vibrate?
Chicago - Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?
This is truly the question for RIGHT NOW. It’s also a really really dumb song. It seems like a filler song, like truly stream-of-consciousness writing (no shade; I’m doing the same thing right now!). But I’m envisioning the producer of Chicago’s album saying kind of last minute, “guys, we need one more song on this record. Literally anything.” I mean, look at the lyrics:
As I was walking down the street one day / A man came up to me and asked me what the time was that was on my watch / And I said / Does anybody really know what time it is
I mean, maybe I’m not giving the songwriter (Robert Lamm!) enough credit. I guess he’s having the same existential crisis that we all are? But I just find the whole thing so irritating. Who wants to listen to a play-by-play of his day and the people he encounters while on his ambling stroll? TL/dr: one guy wants to know what time it is, some lady feels the need to inform him that her watch has stopped, and then there’s a lot of pushing and shoving (?!) as people are going to and from work. But not our narrator! He’s just walking around, waiting to be approached, so he can NOT ANSWER the question he is asked, and instead ponder the meaning of life. It’s so annoying! And also completely confusing how this was a HIT SINGLE?!! The 70’s, man. (More about this soon.)
Time in a Bottle - Jim Croce
When I lived in England (the first time, as a kid) I had my first BEST best friend, Judith. (Hi Pudes, if you’re reading this.) Like the first person outside my family who actually totally *got* me. I guess we got each other? It was actually how I always imagined friendship to be, but it had never happened like that for me before.
We hung out every day after school and spent most weekends together. We’d stay up late listening to music in her room and just talking, talking, talking deep into the night. It was just before either of us had discovered boys, so all the energy that would later be used for crushes and romance was channeled into this amazing friendship.
When we moved back to the US, I was devastated.
We wrote long, newsy letters to each other faithfully for years. We saw each other every summer. I think it was the first summer we were reunited (her family came to the US to visit) that we sunk a lot of hours listening to “Time in a Bottle” and feeling sad about our fleeting moments together. We took the unusual step of writing the lyrics out on belts (?!!) for each other, and that belt with her handwriting and Jim’s lyrics hung on my closet door for all of high school.
But there never seems to be enough time / To do the things you want to do / Once you find them / I've looked around enough to know / That you're the one I want to go / Through time with.
The bitter irony here, of course, is I lived in England again until last Saturday, and there still wasn’t enough time to see her. Not that we were allowed to for much of the past several months, anyway. But regardless, we have families and busy lives of our own now, and that brief fleeting moment when friendship is your only responsibility has long passed.
Time After Time - Cyndi Lauper
I get a Strong Emotional Reaction from the opening chords of this song; do you? Flashback, warm nights!
This is one of three CL songs that I mix up. I always wonder, is this the one that makes me sad and I also think might be good to sing at karaoke? So I start here. Then, I realize, no, the one I’m thinking of has a longer title and something to do with night.
Oh! It must be “I Drove All Night.” So I move on to that one but it’s too upbeat.
Finally, I realize I must be thinking about “All Through the Night” and get the gut-punch nostalgia hit I was seeking from the opening keyboard twinkle. (Twinkle?!)  Hope you enjoyed this tour of my brain.
Anyway, back to this song. Time after time, Cyndi helps me sift through the suitcase of memories, dreaming about my bright future as Mrs. Corey Feldman. Like Karen’s SOPHISTI-POP entry, this is another ten-year-old under-the-covers listening experience. With no baseline for actual relationships, I pictured this as a treatise on Adult Love. A series of gauzy-hued Missed Connections, punctuated by consent issues (you say, go slow).
Upon grown-up relistening, it is a strikingly accurate portrayal of Relationships. She’ll be waiting for her lover, time after time, no matter what; but also literally waiting--what with the clock ticking and the second hand unwinding. I’ll wait for you forever but also it’s 7:35 WHERE ARE YOU.
(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life - Bill Medley / Jennifer Warren
This is not the best song on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. That honor OBVIOUSLY belongs to “Hungry Eyes” by Eric Carmen. I don’t think you need to hear any more details about my ten-year old fantasies though, so I will spare you.
“(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” made a recent reappearance in my life when it was played at a Halloween party. I had a drunken miscommunication with my friend Nelson where I stood at one end of the dance floor and ran towards him at full speed, thinking he would somehow instinctively do “the lift”. But instead I just crashed into him and almost broke his glasses and nose. So, this is really just a word of warning.
Also, Patrick Swayze is SO MUCH OLDER then Jennifer Grey; how did we not notice/care? Just so busy stanning Baby and Johnny Castle. Better or worse than the glaring age gap between David Bowie and Jennifer Connolly in Labyrinth? EVERYTHING IS RUINED.
All My Life - K-Ci & JoJo

Disney Plus UK movies and shows revealed: here’s the full list at launch
Home
News
The full list of Disney Plus UK films and shows coming in time for launch has been released, and you’re in for a treat. Among the 500 films, 350 shows and 600+ episodes of The Simpsons, you’ve got close to a complete set of Marvel movies and every Star Wars film minus The Rise of Skywalker (which is coming at a later date, Disney UK confirms).
Below, we’ve reproduced the full list, which comes courtesy of Disney and is noted as being correct at the time of issue. Other highlights on Disney Plus UK at launch include James Cameron’s Avatar, the Home Alone trilogy, a payload of Pixar movies and even all of Fox’s X-Men movies (minus more mature films like Logan and Deadpool). You’ve also got 2019’s live-action Aladdin and The Lion King movies to look forward to.
If you like what you see, you can sign up to Disney Plus for a year at just ÂŁ49.99, which is ÂŁ10 off when you pre-order before the March 24 release date.
You’d be hard-pushed to find many gaps in there, and you’ve got a lot of TV to get through. Shows like Agent Carter and The Runaways are well worth checking out on the Marvel side, even if their canonical status is a bit dubious.
The full list is gigantic, and it comes direct from Disney, so you’ll have to forgive the odd formatting of some of the content on here. Have a look, then, at the full list of films and shows coming to Disney Plus UK on March 24
