Ok now I'm like kinda pissed PBS put this one behind their Passport paywall (probably because of the film distributor tbh because it's not a documentary filmed specifically for their American Experience series) because its genuinely SUCH a good documentary and I think so important for young trans people, especially trans women to be able to see. There is so much here in establishing that trans women have always existed and more importantly shows another example that trans people have always had the strength and love for each other to forge their own spaces for joy in a society that tries to squash it.
Theres also so much more information about this community, their families, and their lives that I hadnt seen around before about Casa Susanna that added even more depth to the impact it had. I really really hope I can find another source that's much more accessible for others to watch it!!
Damn they have the documentary on Casa Susanna up on American Experience as well but I don't think it's free to stream. What a fucking bummer. If I can find it somewhere else like i did that one Ursula K. Le Guin documentary a while back I'll be sure to link it.
