don't think this will be a full fic anytime soon, but i've been having blakeTM thoughts for some reason recently , so here's a bunch of headcanons about the background of him and my listener!OC's relationship
Blake’s parents passed when he was a child, and he was sent to the suburbs of Dahlia to live with his grandparents. They tried their best to make him feel comfortable and welcome, but he never felt like it was enough. He’s thought more than he’d like to admit about how his life would have turned out if his parents were still with him.
In third grade, Kai stood up for Blake against some kids who were bullying him, and he’s admired them ever since. He’s always idolized them as his hero who saved him when he was at his lowest, so now he does everything in his power to be there for them in return.
After becoming friends, Blake would practically live at Kai’s house. Their parents didn’t mind because they liked him and saw him as a mild-mannered and respectful boy.
Blake has developed an unhealthy attachment to Kai that he’s mistaken for love. If soulmates really existed, he had no doubt that Kai was his person. He would do anything and everything to protect them, and those are the only times he’s ever gotten scary or violent. Kai has yet to see this side of him. He doesn’t like being in that headspace, and he knows it would scare them if they ever knew the lengths he went to behind their back. (Stalking them to make sure they’re safe walking home, threatening anyone he saw as a threat to their safety and well-being, scaring away people he didn’t see as good enough for Kai, etc.) As they grew up, his admiration turned into something deeper and more toxic.
Kai’s always been somewhat of a social butterfly, definitely outgoing and extroverted. Blake simply watched on the sidelines as they dated and made friends all through middle and high school. Kai always just assumed he had other friends to hang out with when they weren’t around, but that wasn’t the case. They were his only friend (and now the object of his affections). He thought about them all the time.
The two of them had experienced the development of their powers together, and pinky-promised that when they finished high school they would both enroll at D.A.M.N and get an apartment together.
Their big fight came one night when Kai told him they changed their mind. They had just gotten a well-paying manager position at a skate shop downtown and wanted to spend some time focusing on their music before they considered going to the academy. Blake hadn’t thought this would happen, so he didn’t have a plan B. What was he going to do if they separated, and they started growing apart? He couldn’t imagine life without them. As they talked about a future where they didn’t need him, he could feel them slipping through his fingers. So, he clung on even more. He knew he looked pathetic, but he begged them to come with him, and it only opened their eyes more to his clingy behavior. The night ended with Kai telling him that maybe they did actually need time away from each other. Frustrated, angry, and in tears, Blake stormed out of their room, down the stairs, and slammed the door to their house behind him.
He did end up moving to Dahlia to attend D.A.M.N, but the distance didn’t stop him from growing bitter at Kai. A Close Knit recruiter on campus caught him in his emotionally vulnerable state and invited him to a general meeting, which pushed him further down the rabbit hole. Looking for anything and everything to distract him from his lingering feelings about his best friend, he was sucked in fast. He even stopped attending classes to get more involved in the organization. It all felt so trivial when he now had a higher purpose to fulfill. As he rose up the ranks and learned more about their work, he became more convinced that empowered humans were in danger. Eventually he reached back out to Kai, partly because Close Knit needed all the help it could get, but also partly because his toxic overprotective tendencies had resurfaced now knowing that the one person who had ever truly seen him and cared for him could be hurt.
