tuesday again 12/17/2024
exactly eleven months unemployed yaaaaay. this is late partly bc i went into a fugue state with a craft
listening
the genshin album with the song im obsessed with is finally officially out. this is background music in the Flower Feather Clan, who are loosely gaucho-inspired but also ride giant firebirds? sick as shit.
youtube
it reminds me a lot of aaron copland's rodeo suite and his billy the kid ballet, especially the little hoedown passage at the end.

ripping through more stacks of awful fantasy paperbacks. none of them are bad in an interesting way.
great sex reporting as always from sam cole at 404 media. would strongly encourage people to sign up for their newsletter and make a free account to get past the anti-bot-scraping wall
“If anything, the fact that ‘tradwife’ is a trending porn search term reminds me that the entire concept of the tradwife is just influencer marketing in the first place,” Dahl said. “Most tradwife influencers are actually business owners and the primary breadwinners in their homes, so the term itself is kind of an oxymoron if you think about it. Maybe seeing a bunch of porn labeled "tradwife" will help other people to realize that whether it's an Instagram influencer or a Pornhub creator, tradwifery is just a fantasy after all.”

watching
Tide-Line Blue, a 2005 anime which should feel made especially for me: i love one-season post-apoc anime. it's available on tubi (which is where i found it dicking around for something to watch) but i'm not really sure why it's so difficult to find videos of it on the actual internet.
Tide-Line Blue is set after an environmental disaster later called the "Hammer of Eden" has submerged 90% of the Earth under water and taken six billion lives. The series begins fourteen years after that event with the new and remaining countries being brought together under the New United Nations. However, Gould, a renegade submarine captain wishes to use military force to create peace in the new world order, while Aoi, the secretary-general of the New UN, wishes to use diplomacy, and a boy named Keel finds himself caught up in the middle of it all.
unfortunately this was VERY bad at laying out and explaining the political drama driving the plot. we do not find out Why the rogue submarine captain went rogue until the second to last episode. and not in a teasing raising the stakes way. we spend So much time with this captain, and his decisions feel quite frankly nonsensical a lot of the times without this EXTREMELY important context we do not find out until a halfhearted flashback when he is remembering something. never is this communicated to one of our main POV characters. ever!
i also had to throw my disbelief into the next county bc an astronaut is trapped up there for seven years on a private imaging-based satellite. that man would be dead. it takes the combined powers of many nations and thousands of engineers to keep the ISS at "not currently exploding". and part of that is bc she is very old and only has a little bit of a taste for blood (unlike skylab which actively tried to kill her astronauts at every opportunity) but ONE guy for SEVEN YEARS is still able to make daily transmissions???? that man should be exploded by now. or in organ failure. the human body is not meant to be in space and does not like being in space, as a general rule.
there's a mom that's just. missing. and this is not particularly remarked upon or relevant. i guess she's off doing her own thing? or maybe dead? very unclear. not important but did annoy me.
very pretty pilot episode, and i had a fun time thinking about the ways people survive during massive sea rise, how communications networks without satellites work (i assume there's a lot of bouncing stuff off the moon but the debri cloud around earth looks fucking gnarly in the outer space segments). really do wish this one was better but it is incoherent at best a lot of the time. "eeeee big ship lots of loving shots of instrumentation" only gets me so far

playing
Two Full Years Of Stardew Valley. i picked the beach farm bc i wanted to spend more time fucking around in the mines and uncovering secrets and romancing someone (i have never successfully romanced someone in stardew valley) and then forgot that the farming game does actually want you to do a lot of farming to progress. kind of wish i had not picked the beach farm but i am making a fucking killing selling void and dino mayo and various cheeses. plus my eels are happy?

making
my back finally feels mostly very uncomfortable instead of excruciating, and i certainly overdid it today cleaning but my house was Gross. i also ripped apart my vacuum and cleaned the dust canister and filters bc that shit was Gross.
40+ christmas and new years' and some very overdue postcards are in the mail: canadian pals, my post office would not even take yours and said to hang onto them until after the strike. i am so sorry. also i have way more canadian pals than i thought!
there are two kinds of thrift stores: ones that like to bag a billion small items together and have a huge horrible wall of weird bagged shit, and thrift stores that don't do that. this was loose on a shelf, i had to get a goodwill manager to price it, and they said "i dunno. 2.99?" so i have had a very pleasant evening gluing together this extremely thin laser cut wood in the style of a papercraft. thank you goodwill.

i always love an update post, they make me feel like we’re gossiping lol
if you’re in the mood to post one i will be reading it like a dad reading over the morning paper at the breakfast table trust
also now that i’m caught up with ur acc happy belated anniversary <3
-🧚🏼♀️
— link.
thank you very much!
what me and beef did for our anniversary was rly fun so i’m gonna give you an update page on that. i ended up falling asleep at 9pm the night prior bcos i was so exhausted from work and preparing for the anniversary day. woke up at 4am which he was already awake and we got to kiss on each other and go back to sleep together until we were ready to get started around noon.
we went to our fave coffee place and got drinks and pastries and went to a park with a lake to watch while we enjoyed each other’s company and had our food. he got a pumpkin cake and iced coffee, i got a chocolate croissant and chai and we shared.
then at home, we rented a movie he picked (rescue dawn with christian bale i believe it’s called) and i found my favorite robin hood movie on tubi (the adventures of robin hood with errol flynn). he doesn’t like movies made before the 2000s and i dont like high intensity war movies so both he and i have short attention spans when it comes to movies especially these movies, so we set timers to watch thirty minutes of my movie, thirty minutes of his, and then switch off playing ghost of tsushima (he has a game on his profile on my ps4 and i have a game on my profile) and we did that cycle until it was time to go to dinner
when i go out to eat, i like it to be luxurious. i like options. i like to be there a while. i don’t get to do that often, and we saved a lot of money to be able to do it this time. we went to our favorite italian restaurant and we dressed comfy bcos we knew we were about to feast. sweatpants and hoodies so we could have a proper comfy food coma
here’s how it went. we knew what we wanted to eat, but we wanted to take our sweet sweet time. we were expecting to be there about an hour and a half maybe more, and made sure to be there two hours before their closing time so we didn’t feel rushed and we didn’t cut into the staffs cleaning.
i ordered our drinks, two waters, a shirley temple for me with extra cherries and a sprite for him bcos we need sweet drinks as well as hydration. we settle in, we get comfortable. we always sit next to each other in a big booth and we were secluded in the far side of the restaurant everything is perfect. all of our supplies like wallets and keys etc everything in our pockets was set aside to the far part of the table out of our way. we drink our drinks, we eat our complimentary bread and oil and herbs, we fill the time. he doesn’t want an appetizer, but i want my favorite dish in the whole world right now. a fat ball of burrata, halved lil tomatoes, fresh basil, olive oil, and balsamic. it’s divine. it’s fresh. it’s light. we’re sharing our appetizer and we’re pacing ourselves. he doesn’t like tomatoes but he’s eating them on the bread and he’s saying it’s a rare moment for him and the cheese makes it better. i’m having such a swell time
when our waitress comes back we tell her we want a little more time to pick out our entrees, we’re living in luxury rn. we talk to her about some wine choices that go well with pasta, tell her what we’re celebrating. three whole years together.
since i don’t wanna eat too much too fast (i like picking off of options) i set aside the appetizer. when he pick out our entrees we pick out a side which we both chose chicken soup. the chicken soup comes first. it’s my favorite chicken soup. the only stuff i wanna eat when i’m so sick and need a good warm meal with a kick to clear my sinuses.
i also ordered a glass of wine to share with him bcos neither of us are alcohol people but i’m trying to get laid later and i wanna be loose and happy and have a little wine with my self indulgent dinner. the waitress helped me pick out a red wine thatll go with my pasta.
then our pasta (and wine) comes, both a type of ravioli. his is more cheesy like ricotta and i chose lobster. i love shellfish. if i could live off of lobster and crab i would. we share our pastas :) we drown them in parmesan. we have a little wine
she comes back to ask me if i like what she chose for me, and i explain that she picked a great choice but i just don’t like alcohol at all. she comes back with a sample of a more expensive bottle and its a lot smoother and she told me snuck me it.
dessert time comes and we pick tiramisu bcos i haven’t had it in years and its terrible when you buy it from the store, she says it’s on the house for our anniversary. we share it :)
we pack up all our foods, all our breads, soups, pastas, appetizers, and dessert and give our waitress one hefty tip and chug the rest of the wine. after an hour and a half of self indulgent blatant luxury and gross misuse of american earned funds we’re out of there and i’m wine drunk bcos it hits me all at once. beef makes sure i’m buckled in and we get home to go back to our movies and games and pick off our leftovers every so often and he takes good good care of me

got to watch black christmas!! It was quite a fun holiday horror movie--always a fan of old school slashers cuz I go feral 4 them. And I also got to watch My Bloody Valentino too, but it was only the 2009 sequel that was available on tubi sadly, it was still good tho! I always hate that whenever I wanna watch a popular horror movie its always not available on a streaming platform I don't own or I have to buy or fuckin do a premium subscription (fucking HATE TV services most times, man 😑)
OH, aaaand I recently found out that your OTHER fav movie, american psycho, is on peacock so I get to watch that as well when I have time. Im still yet to watch zero day (yet), but I am planning to watch it still tomorrow at some point.
On another positive note, ur slasher hcs are SUPER based n glad we share similarities in hcs. Ive been watching and binging a FUCKTON of horror movies--even the grotesque/disturbing and indie ones--on tubi. So im having myself a mini fixation lol.
On ANOTHER additional note, ive also been focusing on my writing my Poly Ghostface/Billy Loomis AU fanfiction after not like, writing for a YEAR straight due to writers block (which fuckin sucks) but im getting back into it to focus on the series.
im so glad u liked black christmas and my bloody valentine!! black xmas was the first actual horror movie i ever watched and i loooove the ending ^^
i love american psycho because in addition to the horror of it. its SO funny. v excited to hear your thoughts on it and zero day!!!
honestly a lot of my slasher hcs were inspired by yours!!! its really cool to share that interest hshdjaj its really fun >.>
also omg poly ghostface???? that sounds so fire hello!!!

discussions of rape (in w movie) read w caution
i while back i went on a binge of movies on tubi including the i spit on your grave trilogy and it was awful
they got procedurally better that thats not saying much
literally half of at least the first movie is a drawn out violently detailed rape sequence
and youre like matthew why did you sit through like 45 minutes of a rape scene which is a GREAT question because i literally kept thinking "it has to be over soon. no point in fast forwarding its gonna end soon." until like 20 minutes in and start skipping forward and realizing im moving through basically the whole movie
see the movies are about women whove been raped becoming horror movie slashers and tormenting and torturing the men who did them wrong which was a premise i found potentially interesting!
the payoff wasnt worth the torture i felt!
rape movies are apparently a whole genre and people say theyre like empowering and the original was very divisive and all and i mean i guess i can get there being a liiittle more than shock value by making people face a very grim truth with no frills or comedy
but like
half the damn movie
theres a point where she gets away runs away AND THEY CATCH HER AGAIN THERES NO RELIEF. which is perhaps a reality. but doesnt make for good cinematic catharsis
"well okay matthew why did you watch two more"
THEY COULDNT HAVE BEEN THAT BAD. SURELY THEYD LEARN. SOMEONE WOULD RAISE A FUSS AND ITD BE LESS EXTREME
and granted i think those scenes were a little shorter it was still like. this payoff isnt worth the buildup even remotely
and then i watched even lambs have teeth
"MATT WHY DID YOU WATCH A FOURTH"
IDK I WAS BORED AND I LIKE TO AT LEAST WITNESS BAD THINGS SO I CAN CRITIQUE THEM WITH ACCURACY AND HONESTY
and tbh even lambs have teeth was alright
theres no or at least EXTREMELY reduced graphic assault its all mostly implied. it doesnt take up an uncomfortably long unbroken amount of time
and when it comes to the slasher sequences it was fun. the girls were conniving and methodical and i got the impression they were actually enjoying this revenge. and it was camp. they show up covered in blood at like a target and buy every weapon adjacent object they find
the movie managed to tackle a serious subject that was uncomfortable to watch but in a way which was also interesting to watch and felt meaningful
the other series really just feels like torture porn in a more literal sense of the word and thats just tragic

hi! i've been a huge fan of super sentai specifically for a long time and im thinking of getting into kamen rider but i really dont know where to start. i was thinking decade mostly because i see him a lot on tumblr but his story involves past kamen rider right? so like i should watch from the beginning right?
Oh, this is a fun question! Two initial points:
You absolutely do not have to start from the beginning. Most Kamen Rider shows are standalone entities and can be watched entirely on their own. That being said...
Please, for the love of all that is good and holy, do not start with Decade. Don’t get me wrong, I love Decade, but do not start with Decade. Not only will it be incomprehensible if you haven’t seen the previous nine shows, but it will spoil at least one major plot point for every one of those shows.
Anyway, Kamen Rider shows are mostly standalone, but some of them are more inviting to newcomers than others. You didn’t mention any particular favorite Sentai, so I can’t use that as a jumping-off point, but here are some recommendations:
You don’t have to start from the beginning, but it is a very easy place to get going. Both the original show from 1971 and Kamen Rider Kuuga are very good, and they’re both available to watch for free (with commercials) on Shout Factory TV, Tubi, or Pluto.
If you want something lighthearted and fun, like ToQger or MegaRanger, watch Fourze, which is a goofy, joyful story about friendship and aspiration, set in a high school.
If you found the serious, thoughtful tone of Shinkenger or TimeRanger appealing, their head writer, Ms. Kobayashi Yasuko, has also done several Rider shows that you might enjoy. OOO is a perpetual fan favorite and probably the best jumping-on point of her four--apart from good writing, strong themes, and a truly intense central relationship, it’s also got intoxicatingly good design.
If you loved the intense human drama of Jetman, the head writer of that one, Mr. Inoue Toshiki, has written three Rider shows, all of which I love dearly (although they tend to be divisive). Of his three, Agito makes the best starting point, as it is astoundingly good, with a tight cast of tremendously lovable characters and a great myth arc. (People will tell you to watch Kuuga first--while that does sort of enhance the experience, it’s far from necessary.)
If you want a more modern show with a spectacular design aesthetic, another great central duo, and some really serious things to say about war and scientific ethics, watch Build.
And last but not least, if you loved what Ryusoulger had to say about human emotions and also you want to watch my favorite Rider of all time, watch Wizard, which is about the most beautiful man on the face of this planet fist-fighting your depression and winning. I might be biased. I love Wizard a lot.
I hope this has been helpful! If one of these shows sounds appealing to you and you want to hear more, or for that matter if you want a list of content warnings and/or potential triggers, please feel free to shoot me another ask. And of course, whenever you do watch some Rider, please let me know what you think! 💜💜💜 Have fun!

tuesday again 5/7/2024
i have Got to read a book i enjoy this week or my brain will turn into something the consistency of dried tomato paste on a kitchen counter
also i have lost track of the timing and rhythm of the seasons so for the first time in a very long time there is no may starred war tuesdaypost
listening
Chapstick by COIN off my weekly recommended spotify playlist. i don’t think this song is particularly interesting or well-executed as a whole, but the lyrics
She’s a friend of mine, and an alibi
And the getaway car in overdrive, like
Hey sharpshooter, I like the way you’re moving
i think the use case for this song is a telecom company trying to get you to switch by promising some portable Bluetooth speakers for your summer parties and this is playing diagetically as we slip in and out of various summer parties, following one TV-hot woman in a sundress

reading
i am once again not sleeping well and have shoved a lot of mediocre books into my gaping maw. i have read a good fuckin chuck of the jason todd outlaws runs. i like jason todd/the red hood bc i feel a certain kinship with someone trained for an incredibly specific thing who are then thrown away the second they stop conforming. darth maul also but that’s a different post.
i have several bones to pick with writer scott lobdell. i know this was the early teens but can we chill with the misogyny for a singular page. why themes of addiction only when it is needed to fill a narrative lull? and why are you continually going to put jason in interesting situations where he might confront his trauma or grow despite his trauma and then. not have him confront his trauma or grow at all because of it??? i like snatches of the early issues of the run, when the outlaws are figuring out how to be a polycule team on the most beautiful deserted island and crashed spaceship you’ve ever seen. i liked the art in most issues and these had just enough fun flashes of character (about every other issue) to keep me reading. but im annoyed by it.
i finally finished Wilkie Collins’ The Moonstone, the first physical paper book i have finished in a long time. the flaw of being the first in the english detective fiction genre is that everyone who comes after has a lot of time to perfect it. i felt the actual perpetrator was a little beyond belief and the ending was fumbled. however it was very good at sustaining my interest for like 400 pages. not my picture bc i cannot be bothered to find my copy and bother a cat, but this is the penguin edition i own. i don’t actually know if i will keep it on my shelves but maybe it’s more of a trophy of me getting back into reading physical books?
Alexis Hall’s Mortal Follies also annoyed me. i do not think this author’s strong suit is in longer books. i have read previous books in two hours and change and while i found the ending here satisfying from a fairytale perspective, i did not enjoy the path we took to get there. i thought we were ending and wrapping things up at least three times, and the number of Things that happen in order to carry us on to the next Thing does not feel gleefully madcap but sort of frantically shambling. a very classic three-days time limit is introduced in the middle, it is met, and then we continue on for several months. also the author introduces the concept of shipping your friends with an equally made-up word as shipping through one of the more tiresome characters in the novel and this…cracking? chip? in the fourth wall? fucking annoyed me. it felt very out of tone with the rest of the book. surely there was a better way for this character to express that she wanted the two leads to be together
-
watching
Hammerhead (1968, dir. Miller). this is leaving tubi soon and sometimes the heart needs a silly little James Bond ripoff. had high hopes for this one bc it was rated R and the baddie was obsessed with collecting vintage erotica. i don’t really know why this is rated R. the erotica we see is almost all prints of Fine Art Nudes. there’s a lot of cleavage and undergarments and bikinis but not like. full frontal at any point. no man has their chest out except for an enterprising motorcyclist near the end.
anyway this is a deeply unserious film, as you may surmise. it’s not much fun, especially when it’s not very good at getting everyone to the next scene. Vince Edwards is kind of a cold fish, i do not know why every woman is throwing herself at him. Judy Geeson makes every scene she’s in better (there’s a very funny scene in a post office where they play both keepaway and the thimble game with an important package) but she cannot hold the whole dragging movie up by herself. god they made leading ladies fucking tiny back then. very throwable
-
playing
not fallow but i don’t have anything interesting to say about genshin this week. a friend started playing fnv after several months of subtle hints, i was only able to join his streams after twenty hours in and promptly let him know the inventory is sortable if you click at the top. how had he been going through his whole fucking inventory for twenty hours like that. a man singularly obsessed with both inventory management and min-maxing caps. he had like 8k caps by the time he got to Novac, taking the normal route. people sure can play games in different ways huh
-
making
put some dijon mustard and some broccoli in some macaroni and cheese. that's about it
#tuesday again#tuesday again no problem#an important thing to ask yourself as a grownup responsible for your own care and keeping is: am i having fun? and the answer is no the fuc#i am not!
