Biography
RM started as an underground rapper in Seoul, where he gained popularity to the point of being noticed and recruited by Big Hit Entertainment. A hip-hop group that then evolved to be a K-pop group was formed around him and he was appointed the leader.
While slowly but surely leading BTS at the top of the musical world, he shared his view on life and empathized with oppressed communities, from his inclusion of the LGBT community in song lyrics to his speech at the UN. He has always been invested in the writing, the composition and later the production of BTS songs. Yet, he still found the time for more personal projects, especially in 2015, the year he did the most solo activites.

JAY-Z's Year End Picks 2022 - TIDAL Playlist
Ending the year with holiday cheer is one thing but ending it with JAY Z's 2022 curated top playlist is a Christmas treat to all. The rapper is no stranger to curating playlist and in order to continue he did settle a deal in January of 2015. Before moving forward with the deal, a majority of JAY Z's ownership stake to Jack Dosey's Block, Inc. (formerly Square, Inc.) reportedly went for $302 million last March. TIDAL Playlist Proclaiming himself as a "top-tier" playlist creator, in a tweet last year, JAY-Z discusses the evolution of TIDAL. "I’ve found so many songs, my playlist game is A++,” he said. “I challenge anyone out there. I see a lot of people on this call, I’m not gonna call out individual names. I’m definitely, you know, in the top-tier of playlist creators.” This year's TIDAL playlist is dubbed as "JAY-Z's Year End Picks 2022," featuring a wide range of diversified music. The 41-track mix attributes Hip Hop, R&B, Afrobeat's, Reggaeton, pop and more. Featuring this year's rap hits, the playlist, includes Drake and 21 Savage's "Jimmy Cooks," Future's "Wait For U," and Lil Uzi Vert's "Just Wanna Rock." The billionaire wouldn't curate a playlist if his own offerings aren't added in. DJ Khalid's Grammy-nominated "God Did" and Push T "Neck & Wrist," both highlight JAY-Z in guest verses. Listen to the playlist here. Showing his love and support to his wife, Beyonce, and R&B he trademarks her three tracks from the acclaimed Renaissance album and SZA's recently dropped SOS LP and Snoh Aalegra. Transcending from one genre to the next JAY-Z adds to his curated list international stars like Bad Bunny "Titi Me Pregunto"," Rosalia "BIZCOCHITO," and Burna Boy "Last Last." Musical Output Reported last month, JAY-Z and Beyonce are, supposedly, working on recording a new project together, serving as a final installment for Bey's Renaissance trilogy. The dynamic duo has not released an album since 2018's Everything Is Love. However, fans may have to wait a while. Admittedly the rapper announced he is not currently working on new music. “I’m not actively making music or making an album or have plans to make an album, but I never want to say that I’m retired,” he said in an interview with Kevin Hart in July. “It’s a gift, so who am I to shut it off? And it may have a different form or interpretation. Maybe it’s not an album, maybe it is. I have no idea, but I’m just going to leave it open.” Written by: Abbi-Rae De La Rosa| @justabbi_ Read the full article

Hello! Since you’ve been following VM for a longer time, do you have any suggestions or playlists of their performances? I would love to see their evolution from young kids to successful olympians. Also, it would be nice if they did a documentary about them.
Hello! I also would love to see a documentary about their whole journey. That being said the CBC Roxanne documetary did a good job at capturing their prep for the 2017/18 season. There is also the tv show, but you have to take that whole thing with a grain of salt, a critical eye and a sense of humour.
As for recommendations, there are some links below the cut and for the 2014 onwards ones if you google it you'll find the best one available in your region. Depending on how much time you have, watching all these videos can easily kill a whole day. I would recommend watching at least one of each program and if you want a masterclass in pattern dances watch their CDs. If that's too much then here are my recommendations for hitting the best points of their competitive carrer with bolds being the ones you absolutely can't miss because the list was still very long:
1998 First competition | 2004 Canadians FD | 2005 Nationals FD | 2005 Junior Worlds Ex or 2006 Nationals Ex | 2006 Junior Worlds FD | 2007 Worlds OD | 2007 Worlds FD | 2008 Nationals FD | 2008 Worlds FD | 2009 Worlds FD | 2009 TEB Ex | 2010 Olympics CD | 2010 Olympics OD | 2010 Olympics FD | 2010 Olympics Ex | 2010 Worlds CD | 2011 Worlds SD | 2011 Worlds FD | 2012 Worlds SD | 2012 Worlds FD | 2012 Skate Canada FD | 2013 4CC SD | 2013 Worlds FD | 2014 GPF FD | 2014 Olympics SD | 2014 Olympics FD | 2014 Olympics Ex | 2016 Skate Canada RD | 2016 NHK FD | 2016 GPF RD | 2016 GPF FD | 2017 Nationals RD | 2017 Nationals FD | 2017 4CC FD | 2017 Worlds RD | 2017 Worlds FD | 2017 Skate Canada RD | 2017 GPF FD | 2018 Nationals RD | 2018 Nationals FD | 2018 Olympics RD | 2018 Olympics Team FD | 2018 Olympics RD | 2018 Olympics FD | 2018 Olympics Ex
Thankfully, the lovely @ohyeahvirtuemoirgifs made this amazing masterpost of all of Tessa and Scott's programs from 2003-2014. I did a quick check and all the links I tested still work! The quality for some of the older ones the quality is not great but the CBC recently uploaded their 2007 Worlds FD and 2008 Worlds FD in higher quality.
To add some content from pre-2003 that is not on that masterpost:
1998 - Their first competition ever
2000 - Ilderton skating show
2001 - Ilderton skating show (Grease (both), Tessa, Scott, Bows) and Pre-Novice National Championships
2002ish - Demonstrating a Pattern
2003 - JGP Slovakia OD, FD
If you want to watch through the evolution of Moulin Rouge I also found this post I made with links to all it's outings:
Post-2014 in the professional circuit they did so many shows and there are so many videos I can't link them all there but if you want to search them here are the program names (and the show if they're specific to a certain tour):
2014 - Top Hat and Tails, Into the Mystic, Try (Stars on Ice Canada)
2015 - How Will I Know, Good Kisser, Hip Hip Chin Chin (Stars on Ice Canada)
2016 - What's Love Got To Do With It, Sorry
2017 - Purple Rain
2018 - Long Time Running, Moulin Rouge, Shape of You (Stars on Ice Canada), Fields of Gold (Stars on Ice Canada), You Rock My World
There is also the 2018 Thank You Canada Tour and the 2019 Rock The RInk Tour which they produced and are worth watching in full!

My Top 88 Songs Of 2020
Previously: 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011
Though we couldn’t get as trim as last year’s 75, still very happy to keep this under 100 for the second year in a row. This was a very difficult year in many ways, but music helped make it more bearable.
As always, criteria and info:
This is a list of what I personally like, not ones I’m saying are the “best” from the year; more subjective than objective
No artist is featured more than once
If it comes down to choosing between two songs, I try to give more weight to a single or featured track
Each song on the list is linked in the title if you wanna check them out for yourself; there is also a Spotify playlist at the bottom that includes the majority of the songs
Usually a pump up video goes here, but 2020 had a different energy, so Michael, take us in.
88) Katy Perry - “Smile”
Even Katy Perry’s good songs are a swirling spiral of maxed out auto-tune. This one is just fine. It’s... fine.
87) All Time Low - “Trouble Is...”
Is All Time Low the Katy Perry of pop punk?
86) Tee Grizzley f/ Payroll Giovanni - “Payroll”
I have never heard of Payroll Giovanni, but I have two questions:
1) Is this his song, and he got Tee to jump on it?
2) Or, did Tee write a song called “Payroll” and think to himself “You know who would be great on this? Payroll Giovanni!”
Favorite stretch:
Listen, we is not the same, you say "door", I say "dough" You say "floor", I say "flow", you say "for sure", I say "fa'sho"
85) Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande - “Rain On Me”
Coming out in 2020 probably hurt this song, because I have no, like, out of the house memories with it. You can only have so much fun with Big Singers Singing over a pulsing beat when it’s coming from the phone in your kitchen as you’re indifferently scrambling eggs.
84) Benjamin Gibbard - “Life In Quarantine”
Now this is a song you can do nothing to; almost feels like it’s reluctant to even exist. It got released in March of 2020, so the outro (“No one is going anywhere soon”) served as a too sad reminder/mantra for what the year was about to be. Second shout out to Gibbard for the many YouTube sets he put together during the early stages of the pandemic (when so many of his peers were trying to figure out the next move).
83) Cardi B f/ Megan Thee Stallion - “WAP”
This felt less like a song and more of a “whoa, did you see the music video?!” and/or a means to relitigate the eternal question “What is the sexual line in music?” And while it was fun to watch people freak the fuck out... the quality itself really needed to be better.
(Note: YouTube video is the edited chorus; explicit version here)
82) McKayla Maroney - “Wake Up Call”
Former Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney -- of medals and memes fame -- dips her toe into the music waters. It’s inside-the-box modern pop music. One thing that’s hard to escape: it doesn’t really sound like her.
81) Chelsea Cutler - “Sad Tonight”
He vocals really remind me of Alessia Cara.
80) blink-182 - “Quarantine”
Blink doing a Bad Religion impression. Docked a few points for the very weak chorus lyrics (“Quarantine, fuck this disease”). That said, as serious as the song comes off, there are some clever punchlines to be found.
79) Dave Hause & Brian Fallon - “Long Ride Home”
This is kind of a nothing song, but it’s easy listening. Also, if your guitar leads can’t clear the “Could Bobby have written or performed this?” bar, then said leads are probably pretty weak.
78) Travis Scott & Kid Cudi - “THE SCOTTS”
Two artists who pair so well together, it’s hard to tell who exudes more influence on the track (eh, that’s not true, it’s Travis Scott, but Kid Cudi is more of a roommate than guest). They want you to be high by the time the instrumental outro hits.
77) The Strokes - “Bad Decisions”
The beginning sound feels somewhat evolved, but by the time Julian Casablancas croons “Making bad decisions”, the song feels like it could be on their debut album “Is This It?”. And it goes in and out like that from there.
76) Thundercat - “Dragonball Durag”
Thundercat is one of those artists I wish I liked more, but when the occasional track does hit, it’s a momentary glimpse into what real fans seem to always see.
75) TI f/ Lil Baby - “Pardon”
Standard fare. Lil Baby’s cameo is very meh.
74) Porches - “Do U Wanna”
For a song that repeatedly asks “Do you want to dance?”, it sure makes you feel like you’re moving in slow motion.
73) NOFX - “Thatcher Fucked The Kids”
On the best-named album of the year (“West Coast vs. Wessex”), Frank Turner and NOFX cover each other’s material. To start us off, the legends take a song from 12 years ago about British politics from 40 years ago and, well, very easily apply it to right god damn now in America.
72) The Bombpops - “Dearly Departed”
Ahh, my year’s first cancelled concert. The listed names in V1 always make me want to skip this song -- but patience, grasshopper. Chorus is aight.
71) Ratboys - “Alien With A Sleep Mask On”
This band name will never match what the music sounds like.
70) Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - “She’s There”
The vocals in this song channel, like, four completely different singers for me, ranging from Bob Dylan to Cloud Nothings.
69) NOBRO - “Don’t Die”
An anthemic chorus meant to be belted in a room with sweaty strangers.
68) Oliver Tree f/ blink-182 - “Let Me Down”
The original solo version of this song is 1:52, and though the blink cameo pushes it over the dreaded two minute mark, it adds enough diversity to justify the choice (keep an eye out for the quick Green Day lyrical nod in the back half).
67) AJJ - “Normalization Blues”
This dropped in January, and if you thought the year was bad then. Punk News:
I'll admit I do want the album to age badly because I really don't want to have to listen to it years later and still say this is the world we're living in.
Said album being titled “Good Luck Everybody” is straight cryptic.
66) Selena Gomez - “Rare”
Very chill for big pop; triplet rhythm singing in the chorus gets me erry time.
65) Kid Cudi & Eminem - “The Adventures Of Moon Man & Slim Shady”
Cudi’s second split collab yields bigger results than his Travis Scott joint (admittedly with a worse beat here). It rarely ever hurts to let Eminem do the heavy lifting.
64) Alkaline Trio - “Smokestack”
A little cheerier than the average Alk3 song, but Dan Andriano seems like he’s been in a great place for a long time now; confident and in control. For me, the whole song builds up to the “You changed my life” chorus.
63) Frank Turner - “Scavenger Type”
Here, Frank takes on the acoustic closer to NOFX’s legendary 1994 album “Punk In Drublic”. Though the energy boost is most noticeable, my favorite part is how you can hear how much Turner loves this song as his melody bursts on the verses.
62) Mike Posner - “Alone In A Mansion”
Mike Posner, an artist I have a very soft spot for, released a storytelling concept album in 2020. From the intro track:
This album was written, recorded, and produced over a period of two weeks in Detroit, Michigan in my parents' basement. It's meant to be listened to all the way through. At least on the first listen. And it's about 36 minutes long. If you can't devote 36 minutes of undivided attention to this album, I again politely ask that you turn it off and return at a later time. I love you and I thank you for taking the time to listen in the first place. Also, it's important to note that the characters and the stories in this album are completely fictional. In addition, anyone struggling with a mental illness - depression, schizophrenia - should not listen to this album. Turn it off.
So those are the stakes. Pulling this song -- the record’s closer -- feels unfair void of context, but them’s the breaks.
61) Nada Surf - “Just Wait”
Heavy hitting chorus without having to be heavy; this could really work in a movie.
60) Matt Pond PA - “Wild Heart”
This having only 805 views on YouTube is criminal.
59) Liquid Death - “Unnecessary And Unimpressive”
Liquid Death -- in this iteration -- is a punk rock supergroup with members of Rise Against, Anti-Flag, The Lawrence Arms, and The Bombpops. If that didn’t interest you enough, all lyrics in the project (which, I believe, is for charity) come from hateful comments or negative reviews. Of the four artists involved, this sounds most like a Bombpops song, with Jen on lead vocals as others chime in.
58) PUP - “Rot”
Off my silver medalist for album name of the year (“This Place Sucks Ass”), PUP doesn’t do anything new here, but it was relieving to see them still going in 2020 when so many others got roadblocked, both physically and creatively.
57) Paul Harrold and the Nuclear Bandits - “Massanutten”
This reminds me of local Chicago artist Al Scorch. So much earnestness in the vocals, but a little more prairie for Harrold compared to speakeasy for Scorch. This would be a good road trip song. And I’m not talking about singalong... more for the stretch where you want to sit in silence and look out at the sun-kissed land blazing by. The song’s greatest victory is getting me to like something that cracks 6:00.
Note to future me: Massanutten is in Virginia (saved you a Google).
56) Kesha f/ Sturgill Simpson, Brian Wilson & Wrabel - “Resentment”
Kesha has been vulnerable in the past but never this stripped down sonically; the chorus would feel right at home on a country radio station. Love a good bridge, too.
55) Megan Thee Stallion f/ Beyoncé - “Savage (Remix)”
An up-and-comer pairing with a legend rarely lets down when both sides are this locked in. Bey wins. Fav line: “If you don't jump to put jeans on, baby, you don't feel my pain”.
She matches flows with Megan but also brings melody. Her blessing takes this song from pretty damn good to undeniably great.
That beat, too.
54) Red City Radio - “Baby Of The Year”
If all you want to do right now is grab a drink in a bar, here is a video built to troll.
(Also: a Liquid Death cameo?!)
53) Nathaniel Rateliff - “And It’s Still Alright”
The last time Mr. Rateliff had our attention, he just wanted a drink. That hit had a chorus with the very-sad-when-removed-from-the-song “If I can't get clean, I'm gonna drink my life away” lyric. Well, our man got sober since. And when the party is over, the introspection comes.
52) Direct Hit! - “HAVE YOU SEEN IT?”
Listening to slowed down Direct Hit! is like watching Usain Bolt lightly jog. It kinda makes sense because the core action is there, but it also feels sort of incorrect.
51) Hayley Williams - “Dead Horse”
Solo Hayley songs have this feel like they could do anything at any time... but then don’t. This one does the same until a very fun chorus breaks it up.
50) Kid Cudi f/ Phoebe Bridgers - “Lovin’ Me”
Probably the most improbable collab on this list (if 2020 hadn’t repeatedly taught us to not be surprised by anything).
49) The Homeless Gospel Choir - “Don’t Compare”
Listening to The Homeless Gospel Choir is kind of like getting a dedicated pep talk from a good friend... while fire rains down from the sky.
48) Carly Rae Jepsen - “Let’s Sort The Whole Thing Out”
Queen vocals with one prince of a tempo; this chorus is Sour Patch Kids riding Twix logs down a soda pop waterfall -- and it’s a b-side.
47) Green Day - “Meet Me On The Roof”
I like this song because it reminds me of summer and because it doesn’t really sound like Green Day (but still totally does).
46) Broadway Calls - “Meet Me On The Moon”
Promise -- swear -- I was gonna compare this Broadway Calls song to Green Day before realizing they both had titles about meeting in an escalated location. That said, I did put them next together on purpose to more coherently make this point.
45) David Rokos - “Building Bridges”
My buddy Dave wrote this song, and I think I’ve asked him three times what “burning sugar” meant (he says it’s a reference to absinthe). This song will make you want to travel to enjoy not only the places but the people around you.
44) Charli XCX - “claws”
Charli XCX keeps it futuristic in a video that could be described as sexy, cheesy, goofy, and playful-yet-serious.
43) Brian Fallon - “Lonely For You Only”
This is too easy and should not work (and maybe doesn’t). But that chorus... that circular phrasing... it still takes me all the way out. But I’m the same cat who proposed while a Gaslight Anthem cover was playing.
42) Waxahatchee - “Fire”
This song could be in a different language and hit just as hard.
41) Harry Styles - “Adore You”
Purifying pop.
40) Local H - “Hold That Thought”
Hardest rock song thus far. Local H was one of the first artists to play “live” once the lockdown hit (on a simultaneous YouTube/Facebook stream), and watching them attack music in their Chicago practice bunker felt a little bit like taking in the end of the world. New songs, old songs, covers -- it didn’t matter; their cool, unmatched apathy fits a pandemic or peacetime.
Ironically, was able to see them live in 2020, as they played a socially distanced, outdoor drive up concert in a minor league baseball parking lot. It wasn’t the same, but it was still something.
39) Crazy & The Brains - “I Don’t Deliver Pizza Anymore”
This song is just cool*. The verses feel tense and crucial, it starts to unspool in the pre-chorus, and the chorus itself feels like a light comedown more than anything else.
(* - though the lyric video is docked some points for spelling y’all as “ya’ll”)
38) Drake f/ Fivio Foreign & Sosa Geek - “Demons”
Menacing Drizzy can be very fun from time to time. Also more than happy to keep “Toosie Slide” very far away from this list.
37) Hey Dad!!! - “Life’s Alright”
Small band, big song; though summer feels light-years away.
36) insignificant other - “i’m so glad i feel this way about you”
This song lands a big haymaker in the first few seconds, so it was probably a good call to pull back some for the chorus and, eventually, outro.
35) BTS - “Dynamite”
Heard they made the lyrics bad on purpose for their English hit, which makes sense, because they’re bad. That said, if you listen knowing they’re supposed to be bad, it kinda makes them... good? Listen, 771 million views would have me singing nursery rhymes in Pig Latin.
34) DaBaby f/ RODDY RICCH - “ROCKSTAR”
Someone said this could be the song of the summer, but, because there wasn’t really a summer, I feel like I only heard it once all year. Also, are we really pretending Post Malone* didn’t just do a “like a rockstar” song three years ago?
(* - and N.E.R.D. before that and Cypress Hill before that... though N.E.R.D. only waiting a year after Cypress, so maybe DaBaby actually was patient)
33) The Front Bottoms - “the hard way”
Don’t take it easy on the animal / I am the animal
Not quite sure what this line means, but I fixate on the phrasing every single time. This song sounds resigned in a very self-aware way.
32) The 1975 - “If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)”
For a band called The 1975, they sure sound like they’re on their ‘80s shit here. Also, a real thing that happened:
Me: Is he coercing her to get naked?! I thought this band was woke.
/scans lyrics
/notices “She said” before the “Maybe I would like you better if you took off your clothes” line
Me: Ahh.
Sax solo, take us out.
31) Charly Bliss & PUP - “It’s Christmas And I Fucking Miss You”
A song that is already a forever staple on all my future Xmas playlists.
30) 2 Chainz f/ Ty Dolla $ign & Lil Duval - “Can’t Go For That”
Shorty said she love me / I said “I love me back”
This is a real genre blur; rap at its core, but also soulful, funky, and very danceable. Damn creative.
29) Billie Eilish - “Therefore I Am”
Billie's 2020 gave a few singles -- but no new album -- and a body shaming scandal where the backlash to the backlash probably caused more headlines than the tweet that started it all. Still, she stays on cruise control above the clouds; can all eyes be on you if they can’t even make you out?
Video for this is fun, too. Not sure if her running amok in an empty mall is more of a COVID necessity or commentary on the dying retail industry. As always with her, fill in your own blanks for now.
28) Future f/ Drake - “Life Is Good”
This was my most listened to rap song in the first half of the year, and bumping again now, almost forgot how good it is. Drake just chasing one-liner Instagram captions in the first half:
- “Haven’t done my taxes, I’m too turnt up”
- “N****s caught me slipping once, OK, so what?”
- “B****, this is fame not clout, I don’t even know what that’s about”
And, of course, “Workin’ on the weekend like usual”. The man could make anything glamorous. Let’s hit that H&R Block, bro!
Future’s back half is a totally different song and feels mostly like noise, but the vibe is cool, so I don’t even totally mean that in a bad way. You can even make out a “Got Promethazine in my blood and Percocet” lyric to mark your Future bingo card and immediately move on.
27) I’m Glad It’s You - “The Silver Cord”
This song feels like cold air blowing on the back of your neck.
(Sidebar: thought this band was called The Silver Cord until literally right now)
26) The Spill Canvas - “Mercy”
A dreamy, distorted, at-home version of whatever you remember The Spill Canvas sounding like. This song is confessional and at peace, with the Grade A self-loathing we’ve come to love from this band.
25) 100 gecs f/ Charli XCX, Rico Nasty & Kero Kero Bonito - “ringtone (remix)”
100 gecs first hit my radar with the explosively obnoxious “money machine”, but that’s a 2019er, so this remix to “ringtone” will have to do. It’s catchy like a younger sibling persistently singing a song you’re sick of hearing*.
(* - /only child trying to work in sibling analogies)
24) iann dior f/ Machine Gun Kelly & Travis Barker - “Sick And Tired”
Iann Dior -- ...yeah -- channels Juice WRLD on the hook, and MGK/Travis Barker buoy a track that, honestly, doesn’t really even need the help.
23) Nick Lutsko - “Unleash Your Spirit”
Lutsko hit my radar on Twitter with some legendary political anthems (word to the RNC and Dan Bongino + his Dashboard Trump parody). “Unleash Your Spirit” is the song I most fear hearing (or even thinking of) within a few minutes of going to bed. Not because it’s Halloween theme is scary -- because it’s that god damn catchy. It permeates your brain. True story: a week ago, I woke up in the middle of the night with “Bobbing for apples with the boys” so ingrained in my head, it felt like someone was standing there yelling it through a megaphone.
22) Dogleg - “Kawasaki Backflip”
Bad 2020 robbed many concerts from us, and not getting to see this band live might take the cake. I end the year liking them but could have been *all in* with the right performance and the right venue. Also, Song Title of the Year until further notice.
21) Eminem f/ Juice WRLD - “Godzilla”
Eminem has all of the words and all of the lyrical dexterity, but sometimes it feels like there isn’t anything to ground him. Enter: one of the best beats he’s ever spit on and a Juice WRLD hook to give it pop angle. But let’s not put Slim in the corner -- when he starts accelerating at the end, it’s is a true “holy fuck” moment. It sounds faster than if you actually fast forwarded.
The video ends with a touching audio message from Juice WRLD.
20) Soccer Mommy - “circle the drain”
This song is so gloriously ‘90s; it leans in and does not care.
19) Sam Russo - “Always Lost”
The first time I met you, we were on the last bus You passed me a bottle, and I knew you were one of us
Took 25 words to hook me; I was txting friends before the first chorus even hit.
18) Sincere Engineer - “Trust Me”
Deanna Belos pushes her vocals in this one. I asked about the performance, and she said it was one of the first ones they recorded in the studio, but when they were done and listening back to everything, she re-did this track because her throat was much more used to what the song required.
“That’s why it sounds like I’m on roids lol,” she added.
17) Jay Electronica f/ JAY-Z - “Flux Capacitor”
Jay Electronica signed to Roc Nation in November of 2010. At of the start of 2020, he had still -- STILL HOW FUCKING STILL -- not released a debut album. When he announced it was finally dropping in February, it was met with skeptic eyes. He’d “announced” before. Shit, he’d even posted track lists of albums that never saw the light of day. He was a tease’s tease. It ended up getting a release date of March 12. As the pandemic got really bad in the March 11 zone, he finally had an actual reason to delay the proceedings (the plan: a studio live stream listening party*).
But no -- this is Jay Electronica. Why wouldn’t he drop as the world was ending? The same reason why his costar wouldn’t not have a watch like a Saudi prince. It had to end for it to happen. I wish I saved the memes, because they were fantastic. All I have is my own Twitter memory to prove it happened:
I love this song entirely: the “get the gat” hook (soooo New Orleans), Hov calling out the NFL/acquaintances clout chasing his potential death/rapping forever bars, Jay Elect’s ham-fisted and awkward ass Farrakhan line. Everything is exactly where it should be.
Final verdict on the full album: I don’t know, a B or B+? It had a lot more Jay-Z than expected (wooo), but -- and I rarely say this -- it could have actually been longer.
16) New Found Glory - “Greatest Of All Time”
NFG with a song referencing the Jordan-Rodman-Pippen Bulls only a few months before “The Last Dance” aired. Dare we call it marketing genius? The punk beat does not care; the punk beat is too busy taking souls.
15) Dave Hause f/ Amythyst Kiah & Kam Franklin - “Your Ghost”
“I can’t breathe”
On the heels of the George Floyd/BLM protests came Dave Hause’s somber attempt to capture the moment, desperation, and hurt. On a podcast, he said he was aware he might not ever lead the movement but still wanted to contribute something in an effort to use his platform as a white artist to change someone, anyone’s mind going forward.
14) Taylor Swift - “this me trying”
The chorus makes me feel like the crowd is parting like the Red Sea on a high school -- shit, no, middle school -- dance floor; smoke machine and all. Your crush is waiting for you on the other side. What are you going to say?
13) Phoebe Bridgers - “Kyoto”
Phoebe is one of the best lyricists out because of her specificity, but even though this song is about her dad, you can really fit it to your own narrative.
12) The Lawrence Arms - “Last, Last Words”
The Lawrence Arms wrote their new record (which singer Chris McCaughan described as “this end of the world outpost”) prior to the pandemic, but once you start to process album themes -- and research its namesake -- you do wonder. All of this, combined with some “Catcher In The Rye” references, and we’ve got ourselves a winning formula.
Dressed to kill for oblivion
11) New Lenox - “Fairytale Of Gary, Indiana”
Your boy plays drums and is on the cover art for this one. Dave Rokos wrote the tune, which references The Pogues’ “Fairytale of New York”. Good news: no slurs in the Gary version. We’ll have you in and out in 90 seconds. Also: say hello to the recording debut of Alisa Caruso (some backup vox at the end).
10) Beach Slang - “Tommy In The 80s”
My most played song of 2020, but it really was more of a byproduct of how early in the year the album dropped. I’m still such a sucker for it, though. Other than forced nostalgia, not totally sure what the track is about. Did learn Beach Slang recruited former Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson to play on their LP, which was named -- /deepest of breaths -- “The Deadbeat Bang of Heartbreak City” (so maybe it has something to do with that).
9) Juice WRLD f/ Mashmello - “Come & Go”
The :55 mark. Wait until the :55 mark. When the guitar kicks in and tempo doubles, we have a real “oh, shit!” moment. I knew who Juice was when he passed but only “Liquid Dreams”. His 2020 album (“Legends Never Die”) showed us of what could have been; 55 minutes, loaded with cameos and creativity and experimentation. This song had me in its gravitational pull immediately. By the end of the year, they were using it on sports broadcasts, and it felt like a ubiquitous part of the culture.
One of my favorite days of 2020 was visiting the Juice mural in Chicago with my wife. We went impulsively during the day after someone posted a picture on Twitter.
I snapped one of my own and posted to IG with the Signals Midwest lyric “There is such quiet grace in private moments in public spaces”. The band responded with “RIP JUICE”; the perfect online exchange.
Shortly after, I was out with a different group of friends, and we went back at night. This time, it was protected by a fence you had to squeeze past. When we got through, there were kids in there smoking, taking pictures, just hanging out; empty liquor bottles lined the bottom of the mural. Even though it didn’t take all that long to make it there, it still felt like a journey and total ‘movie moment in real life’; a complete rarity in a year like 2020.
8) Mac Miller - “Good News”
Maybe I’ll lay down for a little...
Sadly continuing the theme of artists gone too soon, we have this reflective Mac Miller single, which feels more like self-eulogy than traditional rap. You feel it the entire time. The song crests with “There’s a whole lot more for me waitin’ on the other side”, and it conveys a readiness for whatever happens next.
7) The Dirty Nil - “Done With Drugs”
I don’t pray to Jesus or even own a suit
We lost the creators of our last two songs to substances, and, if we are to take this song at face value, The Dirty Nil don’t want to go down the same path. Drying out never sounded so cool and defiant... until the IKEA suggestion.
6) The Weeknd - “Blinding Lights”
Uptempo Abel is undefeated. My favorite pop song of 2020 has you feeling like you’re speeding through the empty streets of nighttime Las Vegas in a stolen car; indifferent to your environment, only tuned in to your personal desire.
And, on the lamer side of the spectrum, it spawned a catchy TikTok dance.
5) Spanish Love Songs - “Self-Destruction (As A Sensible Career Choice)”
It won’t be this bleak forever... yeah, right.
SLS has always been over-the-top with their lyrics spotlighting the hopelessness of the human condition -- so it was the *perfect* combo to being locked inside with nothing looking to forward to. Bonus: fun cake video.
Though the song’s core is uncut despair, a random moment I remember from 2020 was my wife telling me “I can hear you smiling as you’re singing” from another room as I belted the despondent chorus.
4) Worst Party Ever - “False Teeth”
This song sounds like The Front Bottoms; insecure yet so full.
3) Run The Jewels - “the ground below”
There were a lot of songs *about* 2020, but I’m not sure any artist soundtracked what being alive now is like more than RTJ. My favorite rap song and rap record of 2020.
Fav Killer Mike line: “Not a holy man, but I'm moral in my perversiveness / So I support the sex workers unionizing their services”
Fav El-P line: “I'll slap a dying child he don't pronounce my name correct”
2) The Menzingers - “America Pt. 2″
The Menzingers unexpectedly released an acoustic, re-done version of 2019′s “America (You’re Freaking Me Out)” single. It dropped on my birthday -- June 5th, 2020 -- as the rage in this country boiled over and protesters took to the streets. Though some of the lyrics remained the same, the new ones were changed with true purpose:
Well George Floyd was murdered by a cop The whole world saw the video and watched Now justice is long overdue Grab your pitchforks, we’re heading to Pennsylvania Avenue
I had nothing left when the first pre-chorus hit: “I hope the Devil and Donald and Mitch McConnell rot in hell for all tomorrows”. Tattoo this on my fucking soul.
All funds from the song were donated to Community Bail Funds (via Act Blue) & Campaign Zero. I purchased the track before hearing a note.
1) Machine Gun Kelly - “My Bloody Valentine”
Going into the year, I couldn’t tell you the difference between Machine Gun Kelly and Mac Miller -- now they’re both fixtures in this Top 10. All I really knew about MGK involved tattoos and a rap battle lost to Eminem (not that anyone ever beats Eminem).
In 2020, he took a punk/emo turn, with the services of GOAT drummer Travis Barker and new squeeze Megan Fox at his side. This song’s lyrics could potentially be cheesy but aren’t -- they all land. From the simulation going bad to not wanting “fake love” to all the damn second guessing and the earnestness that just won’t let you off the mat.
Every piece to the puzzle adds something: the messy hair, the Ken doll build, the forced iconic pink guitar that now feels actually iconic. It was almost like no one had any fun this year so he could have all of it on our behalf. There’s a half second shot of him sticking his tongue our during the pre-chorus, a joy 99.99% of us never got to feel.
The album itself was just as fantastic*; a 2000′s pop punk throwback with a Halsey duet, horrible skits (hi, Pete Davidson FaceTime), OpIvy lyrical nod (complete with a royalty check), a warp speed punk track that doesn’t even crack the minute mark, your token 6/8 ballad, acoustic closer (about his daughter), and some experimentation that leaves the new genre but still stays nearby; shades of Lil Peep, if he had Blink-182 as his backing band. Speaking of, please do not miss Travis’ fill at the 2:30 mark.
(* - named “Tickets To My Downfall”... woof)
MGK could get cancelled tomorrow, but we’ll always have this year in a bottle. The acoustic version of the song (sung in a lower resister), the 10 minute making of video (that I watched, uh, twice)... shit, he even turned it into a medley at the start of 2021.
It might be cliche to say “stay winning”, but when someone stacks this many W’s with no end in sight, what the fuck else do you call it? Real love.

Thank you so much for reading. Here is the Spotify playlist (includes 87 of the 88 songs).

My Favorite Music of 2020
Previously: 2019 2018 2017 2016 2015 2014
I would have loved to spend this month in the afterglow of one of Bob Dylan’s annual late-November shows at New York’s Beacon Theatre, which have become a ritual for me in recent years as the old master has hit a new hot streak with his band. Instead, here I am at home, counting my blessings and wondering for the 115th time whether “Mirrorball” deserves a spot on the cosmic playlist from “Murder Most Foul.” Rough and Rowdy Ways is the finest album in many years from that salty, inscrutable American original — a darkly hilarious stand-up routine about art and mortality, with some real pathos underneath those wild punchlines. As for the others: Bad Bunny, Dua Lipa, and Caribou gave us immaculate grooves for a night out that never came; Katie Crutchfield, Robin Pecknold, and Sadie Dupuis looked within and found new clarity. Some of my favorite songwriters ever showed they can still surprise me, and rookie of the year Flo Milli made me smile every time I pressed play. Will any of these records sound the same in a crowded room? I can’t say, but I’m thankful for each of them and the solace they provided this year.
(My entry from Rolling Stone’s 2020 Staff Picks, which is full of great writing from my colleagues.)

The Sun Always Rises ‘verse, a timeline
Today, February 28th, as of about 2 am, it will have been three years since I first posted The Sun Always Rises. I am immensely proud of what this story became over the years and the universe it created. One thing I always loved while writing TSAR and still love today and, let’s be real, always will love is seeing readers engage with the ‘verse in their own ways. Fics, playlists, fanart! I am continuously overwhelmed by your engagement.
listen, the most tender of my years as a writer were spent as a roleplayer, collaborative writing/world-building is everything to me. so, what better way to nurture that collaborative spirit than to release an extensive timeline of what I have in my mind thus far! I would love to see you guys add your own spin or fill in your own blanks to it. Let’s talk headcanons! Let’s make those headcanons straight-up TSAR canon!!
I’m hoping to keep adding important dates as I continue this ‘verse, because - Yes! I do have sequels planned, and yes, they will come out someday! & I would also love to hear any feedback on dates/timeline particulars that you guys would like to see. This timeline only covers the timeline of Scanlan and Pike’s story, but perhaps I should go further into the past and talk about things like...When exactly did Grog join the Trickfoot family? What’s the timeline on the twins arriving in Westruun again? Wait, how old are Kima and Allura compared to Pike and Keyleth? Anything! You let me know!
Let’s keep the collaboration going! ☀️
to start, some basic information:
Pike’s birthday: May 1990
Scanlan’s birthday: August 1986
Grog’s birthday: October 1986 (held back a year in school due to the trial and transition of him moving from his uncle’s custody to Wilhand’s_
and now let’s begin!
Scanlan and Pike first meet at Grog and Scanlan’s orientation week for college in August 2005
Scanlan just turned 19
Grog will be turning 19 in October
Pike is 15, going into her sophomore year of high school
During his freshman year, Scanlan records a couple demos and tries to peddle copies to as many people on his campus as possible. While visiting one weekend, he gave Pike a signed copy, which she thought was funny (but she still has it) and she took a handful back to distribute around school because Scanlan bought her froyo and she promised she would
Scanlan (20) is found by a talent scout during the Winter of 2006/7 while playing small taverns during winter break and is rush-signed to the Golden Grin. He resolves to stay in school, however, for the sake of his mother. However, juggling recording and song-writing with school work proves too difficult and, in Spring 2007, as his second year of college nears an end, he drops out
Grog (20) drops out with him, throwing himself full force into the fighting career he’d been low-key building up amongst amateur circles
Pike (16) is in her junior year of high school.
Scanlan (20) releases his first single in July 2007 to lukewarm acclaim, and his label immediately thrusts him out into the touring junket to try and get him seen.
Scanlan (21) releases his second single in December 2007, after months of grueling touring, and it’s a big hit. He’s an overnight success, played across stations nationwide. As he’s fielding congratulations from left and right, he receives the news that his mother was murdered in a break-in gone wrong.
He’s allowed (barely) a month to grieve before he’s thrown back into the limelight. Press. More shows. Finalizing his freshman album.
Scanlan (21) releases his first album, Royal, in June 2008. There was one more single released beforehand. He’s touring off-and-on the entire time, mostly as an opening act with a few small venue headliners.
Pike (18) graduates from high school in June 2008. A week later, she sets off on her world travels with Scanlan’s album as her backdrop.
Scanlan begins touring for Royal in July 2008.
Pike (18, almost 19) returns from her world travels in March 2009.
Near the end of his headline tour and after her return from her world travels, Scanlan (22) and Pike (19) see each other for the “second first time” in July 2009 at Grog’s (22) first headliner fight against his long-estranged cousin, Zanror.
it’s the night that their relationship dynamic changes from “kid sister/big brother’s friend” to flirty asides and shy glances.
While still touring and adjusting to his new celebrity status, Scanlan begins work on his new album. After touring ends in late July 2009, he throws himself into collaborations with other artists within the industry.
During Spring Break 2010, Pike (20) visits Scanlan’s (23) new mansion along with her brother, Grog (23). [please refer to this work of art by the legend, jabletown]
In between Royal and Aubergine, Scanlan releases the Wine – EP in July 2010. It showcases songs that will eventually show up on his sophomore album and includes another chart-topping single that sustains his place in the zeitgeist until his next album.
Scanlan (24) releases his second album, Aubergine, in February 2011.
Scanlan tours Aubergine (March 2011-Feb 2012). At some point during the tour, Pike attends a show. Scanlan and her have some flirtations, but it doesn’t go anywhere. Mostly because Scanlan gets overwhelmed by the fact that, “Holy shit. She’s actually flirting back with, like, equal intensity and intent” and he freaks out, and Pike finds him later making out with someone else. Nice one, Scanman.
Half-way through the tour dates (Feb 2012), at the after-party of some award show, Scanlan coked out of his mind causes a big media scene. When he goes unresponsive during the car ride back to his hotel, he’s rushed to the hospital. He goes into rehab the first time (Feb 2011-May 2011). Dranzel takes over his management.
Despite Dranzel’s encouragement for him to take a break, Scanlan resumes touring in July 2011. He finishes touring in December 2011.
Scanlan relapses again in September 2012. Pike sends him her letter. Scanlan is 26. Pike is 22. He attends rehab from September 2012-January 2013.
Pike (23) graduates from college in June 2013. She worked at the temple throughout her studies but, with the addition of her degree, Wilhand increases her responsibilities.
After exiting rehab, Scanlan jumps right back into working. He releases a couple of stand-alone singles, as well as a couple of collaborations with other artists. He makes his rounds around the music world, as if showing off that – Look! He’s clean and back again! Probably stars in a movie while, in the background, he writes for other artists.
In his personal life, he’s thrown himself full force into the recovery program. And everything’s great! He’s so busy that he has no time to think about drugs!
During this time, there is more back-and-forths between Scanlan and Pike. Nothing substantial but little somethings, nonetheless. This is when Scanlan makes a lot of promises to Grog about visiting, but he never falls through, always too afraid that he’s not ready to face Pike yet. Not yet.
In June 2014, he tweets ‘#E6E6FA’, the color code for Lavender. He follows the tweet up with more cryptic social media posts that hint of his presence back in the studio.
Scanlan releases the first single to his upcoming album in late September 2014. It is included on an EP in February 2015, the EP includes previously unreleased B-sides from Aubergine. Scanlan releases it with an apology for the long wait.
Wilhand suffers an accident in early November 2015. Grog leaves competitive fighting to be close to home. Pike takes over as Head Cleric at the temple. Pike is 25. Scanlan is 29.
November 15, on the night before her first sermon, Scanlan and Pike have late night Skype call. This is when Scanlan writes ‘Late Night Angel’, a last minute addition to his album tracklist.
Scanlan releases his third album, Lavender, in May 2016. The touring is far less intense than for Aubergine. He plays primarily within the US with a few big shows in big-ticket international cities. The Lavender tour runs from late May 2016-December 2016.
Afterwards, Scanlan goes radio silent. He’s beginning to run out of steam. Recovery feels repetitive and pointless. Pike never made it to any of his Lavender shows. His grand plans to woo her were never seen to fruition. Though they communicate regularly, he feels more alone than ever. With no drugs or parties or touring to distract him, Scanlan begins to spiral again.
The Sun Always Rises starts in March 2018.
Chapter 17 takes place in March 2019.
Scanlan does a small, “farewell” tour from April 2019-September 2019.
#Pikelan#The Sun Always Rises#im still working on that chapter 10 Scanlan POV fic#hopefully it'll be finished sometime this weekend! 🤞#and yes i know - in true TSAR fashion - i'm posting this at dead hours

the berkowitz family name has long been one that holds prestige & power . among the 1% for over a century . they are a prominent banking family that has had their hands in the pots of nearly every big banking company across the nation . coming into the united states after word broke of the california gold rush back in 1849 , the berkowitz brother’s were of the lucky few to acquire pounds of gold by the thousands . later founding what would become a leading investment bank known as berkowitz capital . the generations to follow would capitalize on the head start given to them by the two brothers . expanding the family company as well as the knowledge of the family name through heavy involvement in politics alongside the kennedy’s . since as early as 1953 there has always been a berkowitz family member actively appointed to a political role ( governor , senator , representative , us ambassador , etc ) . although the families roots within the states are documented in the capital of california , as generations went on they made their way over to the east coast , with most of the family members now residing in southern florida .
the rachelson family is a prominent political family . synonymous with power & eloquence . with their rise initially taking place in the british parliament . many escaped to england from germany between 1933-1935 . they hadn’t settled into the states until jocelyn rachelson ( jalissa’s maternal grandmother ) was appointed the united kingdoms ambassador to the united states in 1987 . the rachelson’s have since had heavy involvement in the us government , both behind the scenes and at the forefront . much of the rachelson family have stayed within the european union ( germany & poland ) as well as england . although the few that followed jocelyn to the states now reside in washington dc and the tri-state area .
henry & austen had met through their mutual friends . it didn’t take long before the two became a rather public couple , a supercouple if you would ( similar to that of a brangelina of the 1% ) . although they’d met in new york the two decided that when it was time to start a family they wanted to move to hilton grove , an island austen had eyed for years . instead they found themselves moving down to fort lauderdale where henry had grown up . before they knew it , they were three kids deep in settling down in fort lauderdale . austen’s anger from never wanting to build a life in florida started to tumble into the relationship & the daily life of the family & so in an effort to recover the marriage henry agreed to moving the family up to hilton grove , where they have resided ever since .
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐉𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐒𝐒𝐀 𝐄𝐑𝐀
jalissa was born the second of three children and oh boy does she suffer from middle child syndrome , riddled with a envy and a need to be in the mix . the berkowitz household , although , from the outside looking in looked like a fabulous family life was anything but . jalissa , like her siblings , was born on a pedestal & what came attached with that was even higher expectations from her parents . her parents found a way to be extremely authoritarian & uninvolved all at the same time . they were very dismissive if you disappointed them & everything jalissa did seemingly did just that .
for a long time she was obsessed with getting her parents approval , she’d turned life into a silent competition between herself & her siblings . she befriended only the people her parents approved of , did all the events they asked her to do , did everything she could to excel academically & only dated people who were of benefit to her parents ( people who’s parents where also in high places ) .
during highschool she joined the model un , debate team , and soccer team . if it were up to jalissa & not her parents she’d probably had joined the cheerleading team but her mother would never let that fly . it was too “ self indulgent “ to fit the family brand ( if only she’d known what would be coming years later lol ) .
it wasn’t until she was seventeen that she started to deviate from her parents wishes . of course , the catalyst to this was a boy , one her parents hadn’t really approved of but jalissa was completely head over heels for him . he really helped her boost her confidence to be her own person ? and not allow her parents to treat her like a puppet . with his encouragement she started her youtube channel , something she’d wanted to do for years but her mother had shot down the idea anytime jalissa brought it up . it was once again too “ self indulgent ” . the channel known as callmejalissa was an outlet for her , talking to a camera was the most heard she’d felt in seventeen years of her life . and god she knew that was hella sad . she really grew to view her subscribers as family & by the time her channel was brought to her parents attention ( more like her mothers , her dad had found her channel just four months after she’d made it and promised not to tell her mother so long as she was smart about what she posted ) she was about to turn eighteen and there wasn’t much they could do to stop her from doing it .
at eighteen she’d graduated highschool salutatorian with offers from university of pennsylvania & brown university . in all honesty she didn’t wnat to go to college , she saw it as a complete waste of her time . it wasn’t like she was going to do anything with the degree anyways . it would simply be a point of bragging for her parents at events & at this point she really could care less about them being able to brag to their friends . she knew she had to play along though , because this was the same year she was going to receive her first half of her trust fund ( a whoopin 500m , yes her trust fund in total will be 1b her parents are grossly wealthy guys ) so she bamboozled ? her parents , promising she’d committed to attending penn just so they’d allow for the money to be released to her account . she moved out of the house , literally moving into a house of her own a couple blocks from her parents house & claimed she was living in pennsylvania for college . we stan a sneaky binch .
two months later her parents were at her front door , though , ready to give her an ear full . her mother basically disowned her at this point . telling her how every year jalissa found a new way to be a bigger disappointment . her dad kind of played good cop , like he normally would because her mother often dug into her pretty deeply . to the point where any insecurity ( even though with the way she carries herself you’d never think she has any ) she has stems from something her mother has said / called her in the past . if henry berkowitz had a soft spot , it was certainly jalissa , it that had only grown clearly with the harsher austen became on the girl .
a few months before her nineteenth birthday a sex tape was released of jalissa cheating on her boyfriend at the time . it was a drunken mistake she’d made around the time of her mother basically disowning her , but that explanation did suffice for her boyfriend who inevitably broke things off with her . although this was a horrific time she’d received an abundance of offers to film more tapes . it was enticing to say the least . she was someone who loved intercourse but also had this deeply rooted desire to get back at her mother ? and what better way to do so then to something so far left from what her mother was about . this was next level disappointment in the eyes of austen berkowitz . the only thing that made sense ( in her mind ) was to dive head first into the porn industry .
like you’d expect her parents had a fit when they found out about her new career choice . although her internet fame had soared to new heights and her youtube & instagram followers were loving every second of this move . her mom was currently serving as governor and has since not been able to get elected in the political world since jalissa became one of the top porn stars around . they basically blacklisted her & jalissa feels no remorse , she’s gone so far as telling her mother “ sucks to be shunned , huh? ” .
although it took her dad a while to come around , he cares far too much to shut her out .
not to long after jalissa & her best friend started their podcast tickets to our downfall , it’s a mix of call her daddy & the basement yard , basically two besties talking on a level that most people wouldn’t want to leave the privacy of their own space , giving advice , hoe tricks , and telling funny stories of their past . it a total hit & one of jalissa’s favorite things to do .
she live sin the same house she has since she was eighteen . she lives on her own with three dogs and a cat . she absolutely hates being alone and so maggie ( a tan corgi puppy ) , louis ( a yellow lab puppy ) , humphrey ( a chocolate lab ) , and cedric ( a orange scottish fold ) are her babies that keep her sane in her big ole home .
𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘
as you can tell jalissa is chaotic , impulsive , reactive , and overall just searching for attention . she doesn’t care if the attention she receives is for the wrong reason or not , as long as she’s getting it . despite this she’s a good person ? i promise . she’s very friendly , loves a good joke & having a good time . very fun loving . she’s the type of person to try and bring up everyone else’s mood even when she isn’t feeling 100% herself . she’s loyal to those she deems are loyal to her . sometimes she’s bad a seeing who is actually loyal to her though & will be disloyal to someone who actually has her back ? oops . she’s definitely not the type to sugar coat anything for you , she tells it like it is & refuses to apologize if that hurts your feelings . if you cross her ? i’ll be praying for you . she’s the type to fuck your s/o , tell your boss some wild story about you & dump alcohol over your head at an event all in the matter of a week . don’t get her going , she’s absolutely relentless . with that said she’d very affectionate ... ? you can catch her hugging up on whoever is next to her at all times . touch is her love language , because lord knows she’s no sweetheart . she hates the stereotype of porn stars / internet personalities being ditzy , although she didn’t attend university she was accepted into two ivy leagues based off her academic abilities alone . the girl is intelligent & enjoys having a clever conversation from time to time .
𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍
a girl squad or just a squad in general really , give my baby her lil group of people please
her ex boyfriend from when she was seventeen ( he’s mentioned above ) but basically he’s the one who encouraged her to not let her parents make her their puppet , they didn’t approve of him , jalissa fell head over heels for him . they would’ve dated for nearly two years because the sex tape of her cheating on him came out .
the person she cheated on her ex with ? maybe they’re the one who leaked the sex tape ? maybe they never even told jalissa they were recording ?
her best friend that she does the tickets to our downfall podcast with ? these two are literally like twins , just two peas in a pod ( pun intended )
fans of her work ? and im not taking about her youtube channel or podcast
ex hook ups that think she’s crazy ? she probably gave them reason to think so lbr
frenemies give me blair & serena circa season one type of shit
just plain old enemies , they were probably friends at one point or maybe just have always disliked one another ?
smoking buddies were they literally just hot box cars together and munch on taco bell talking about why sound vibrates & shit
someone who isn’t afraid to confess their love for jalissa but her damaged ass refuses to confess her feelings for them ? so it’s just this constant cycle of them having a good time , them being sweet & her just gets weirdly quite & starring at them before she complaining about them going and ruining the vibes
she’s a bad influence on them ? they’re a good influence on her ? ride or dies ? partners in crime ? only friends when there is a substance involved ? sugar baby vibes ? unlikely friends ? flings ? crush ? friends with benefits ? everytime they are around one another its a fight ? someone she lets crash at her place sometimes ? someone she’s backstabbed & maybe they don’t even know she has & they still think she’s a ride or die for them ?

The Top 100 Songs of 2019
Hey everyone, if you aren’t familiar with what this is, it’s my favorite 100 songs of the past year. For every song, I mix in some kind of personal story or anecdote. I do this every year - just change the year in the URL line for 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015 or 2014.
The Spotify playlist for this year can be found here.
If your favorite song didn’t make it, oh well! Music is subjective. It’s less about the music and more about documenting the memories. It’s a year in review.
I tried to shorten up the novel, but I failed, it’s still long. I talk a lot, or as Drew calls it, motor mouth (or how he spelled it, motor mount.)
Let’s get that bread.
100. Sisyphus - Andrew Bird
I usually start this with where I woke up on New Year’s Day, but I want to talk about something that happened in 2018 after my top 100 came out last year. I always wondered: What happens if something MAJOR happens after my list is released but before the new year? I learned the answer.
After only two months with my newly acquired Honda Fit, I went to grab A&W at 2 a.m. after a solid games night with Dayn, Evan, Kelly and James. Unfortunately, I hit a patch of bad ice with my foot resting on the brake, locking my tires. I slid and slammed right into a tree, just across from the man-made lake in Erin Ridge, two minutes from my house.
My car was totaled but the important part is I basically escaped with no injury. My left ear was shot for about two weeks and everything was muzzled, but even the burgers stayed intact in my car (Brian was right, no burgers in the car guys). At the time, I was devastated, but with the help of friends Josh & Ronan who came out to the scene and my mom’s boyfriend JD, we were able to get the car home. Drew Skyped me at 5 a.m. and helped me get over the incident faster. I realize how lucky I really am to be able to write this blog today after a year full of events despite the incident. Thanks to my family and friends for just hanging out with me, talking to me and helping things get back to normal.
Also, thanks to the random lady who helped me right after the accident! She stopped and made sure I was okay, that was pretty sick!
99. Doin’ Time - Lana del Ray
I apologize already that there is no more Lana del Ray - but some of her music from the new album is on last year’s list already!
One of the good hangout times this year was when Raphy, Ronan and I hit up Aaron’s house for the Canada vs Finland quarterfinal game of the World Juniors. Finland tied it on the weirdest bounce. Evan Bouchard had a breakaway that turned into a penalty shot but Maxime Comtois (a Duck you’ll later hate unless you’re Wyatt) failed and then Canada lost. Sad.
At least there was some good pool games after, always available on the table in Flem’s lair. I later went to Aaron’s for an Oilers game and like a rare fossil discovery, Milan Lucic scored a goal. Witnessing such an improbable moment in Oilers history is always a treat.
98. Essentially - Japanese Breakfast
Jordan, Aaron and I went to The Canadian Brewhouse for some late night munchies (Alex Beach joined us at a different outing) and it was very quiet inside, except for one person.
Essentially, we started listening to Brandon Lilo on the karaoke microphone singing Sweet Caroline, only it went like this:
SWEET CAROLINE....OILERS SUCK.
Every single time. Don’t ever change Brandon. He’s literally everywhere in the Edmonton area at any time, if that makes sense. Bus, bar, wherever. Maybe he time travels?
97. Freakazoid - Silversun Pickups
If you ever want to see me freak out, just ask me about Peter Chiarelli’s tenure as the Edmonton Oilers GM.
The Griffin Reinhart trade, moving Taylor Hall, Strome for Eberle and then Strome for Spooner, signing Lucic, not getting proper depth, Kris Russell’s contract...just so many moves that killed me inside.
Chiarelli was finally fired this season, one day after I sent this tweet that received lots of action.
Best of luck Ken Holland, you’re going to need it. Maybe one day they figure it out right? Once I’m GM?
96. Mile High - James Blake & Travis Scott
I thought I was high on something strange one night when Drew and I went to the Crown to watch an Edmonton Oilers game vs Minnesota.
We walk into the usual watering hole atmosphere to find it’s JAM PACKED with people. Hunter the Lynx is SERVING BEER at the bar. Ryan Jespersen is on the mic and even anthem singer Robert Clark started Oh Canada INSIDE the Crown!
THE CROWN! Seriously???
It was part of the Oilers GameDay Live promotion and it was super fun. Jen Zandstra, one of my promo coordinators at Bell and a boss for the Oilers promotion team was there and helped it run very smooth. Jen is terrific at her job and it always shows. The Oilers won and Raphy joined later before we hit up OJs feeling dangerous like Baker Mayfield. Matt was also somewhere around, I think we talked about the Tofino trip (RIP).
95. Curls - Bibio
A few of us definitely saw some curls and curve balls at the Edmonton Prospects games this summer. It’s a hell of a time having a few beers while enjoying some baseball in the sun.
I went to one and it’s fun to relax. Some drunk guys were building a beer can pyramid below us and I’m pretty sure it was Pam that was able to knock it over. I honestly didn’t know the score at any point of the game.
Most of our group went to the bar after but Josh and I stayed behind - Subway run at 11 p.m? You bet. Good news? After rumors of leaving, the team is staying at RE/MAX Field in 2020. Save a seat for me!
94. Late Night Feelings - Mark Ronson (ft. Lykke Li)
The feeling I seemed to get during a lot of late nights was hunger - and that meant a LOT of trips to Denny’s this year. Whether it was for a post-Pint meal or just because (like in Kelly, Matias and I’s case) - Denny’s always opens its doors for my friends and I.
Sure, sometimes there’s weird guys in the bathroom or a vape god that almost fights a girl with a biker coat. That’s Denny’s baby. Ol’ reliable.
Drew is an absolute animal in there. The guy just takes pancakes off Rachel’s plate like a lion taking its prey. Maybe that’s why he cheers on the Detroit Lions?
Does anyone ever win from that claw machine in the front of the restaurant?
93. Old Graffiti - Bibio
We had a ton of good bar nights. The party limo from Kelsey’s house to The Pint, Mercer nights with the boys, that one time in Thrift Shop when we found out 23 is too old to be in there, Kayla Ivicak’s shindig etc.
Drew saw Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, James Neal and Darnell Nurse at The Pint. He had a chance to ask Nurse a question and he asks this:
“Hey do you play fantasy football?”
Nurse said no. Smooth. But hey, still cool.
The most enjoyable bar nights could be the ones between Amber, Raphy and I at Mercer, The Pint and Funky Buddha. Amber may be the best at getting me to groove out on a dance floor.
I also always enjoy Raphy, Amber and I’s “pre-drink” sessions at her place. It’s our time to catch up, eat more Subway, spill tea (I drink Snapples...and Mikes of course) and also face the WRATH OF LOUIS - just kidding, Louis is a good friend. Louis did scratch me once...it was just part of the bonding experience I’d say.
Amber has a picture of me enjoying the night somewhere on her phone. I’m sure it’ll be on the top 100 in future years.
92. I Guess I Just Feel Like - John Mayer
For this song, I guess I just feel like telling you guys some of the favorite movies/games/TV I played or watched this year:
Westworld Season 1 - hell yes. This is a real mind tickler. It’s not new, but I’m just getting into it.
Chernobyl - It’s so well done and actually quite frightening to think about. The acting is superb and really highlights the brave efforts of some vs the incompetence of others.
God of War - Hands down the best video game I’ve played in long time and maybe ever. There is such a rich story and the visuals are stunning. Love the atmosphere.
Wolfenstein 1 & 2: Kelly was right - this is a really fun game. Love the sneaking around ramping up in the sequel, it’s a loony story too. Thanks Christian for letting me borrow your PS4!
Avengers: Endgame: Wow. That’s all I have to say. They did it.
How I Met Your Mother & The Office - I re-watch these every year and they’re always better EVERY TIME. They make me laugh AND cry.
Joker: Imagine the villain having reasoning for his actions that are still incredibly wrong but understandable? This movie has layers and I dig it.
Stranger Things: Season 3 was damn good, it lived up to season 1. Loved the 80s theme, loved the character development, Netflix nailed this one.
Big Mouth: It’s a show where I can reflect on my life experiences growing up in junior high/high school and laugh back on it. Hilarious show.
There’s other great movies I re-watched, but I’ll save some of those for my top 20 movies of the decade list, coming out later!
91. I’m A Stranger Now - The Tallest Man on Earth
I felt like a stranger walking into the Buckingham for the first time - I had heard a ton of hype about that bar and it may have lived up to it. After taking a party limo from Drew’s house, we listened to old classics like Come on Eileen and danced around for Amy’s birthday night. I like that place!
Raphy and Aaron fell asleep together at the bar, typical. My only photo proof is Aaron in the dark but that’s okay...there’s more of that later. I thought Amber disappeared only to find her literally behind me.
Raphy was up to his bar mischief - he tapped on shoulders, took Taylor Mildenberger’s drink and caused minor trouble like a cartoon villain.
I bring this night up because I’m pretty sure it’s why my Uber rating isn’t perfect. I have a 4.9 and I assume it’s because I chatted up the driver way too much in the car Klak-style (other reasons too eh Aaron?) I was super annoying and then I asked the driver how long he’d been with Uber? “Actually this is my first trip ever...”
Sorry.
90. Seventeen - Sharon Van Etten
Quick shout out: When I was 17, I’d hang out with Shaydon, a good friend from elementary school. In March, I got to hang out with him for the first time in a hot minute with Kelly. Shaydon took us to a really cool small upstairs restaurant on Whyte and it was delicious. I see you Shaydon, saw you got a new chef gig, that’s sick!
We were seventeen years old when we started playing NFL fantasy. I think our first league was founded in the back of Mr. Johnson’s LA class between Raphy, Ronan and I. Drew added some spice into it later on. Now we do a full fledged draft every year at Drew’s house, followed by partying and discussing why Drew took Todd Gurley so early. Reeve, Drew’s cousin, usually brings the best insults to the table. Josh had a solid rookie campaign.
After winning the pool last year, I lost in a close semifinal battle vs Ronan thanks to Philip Rivers and the Chargers terrible offense. Raphy ended up winning the crown, which is well deserved after years of finals heartbreak. Drew just squeaked by his cousin Reeve in the shit bowl, lucky because he would have had to wear a onesie to Sasquatch if he lost.
We also started a new pool that included Aaron, Kelly, Mike, Shaye and Dean too. Kelly had awful luck, not making the playoffs despite having Lamar Jackson, Aaron Jones and Patrick Mahomes. I had a good team but got bounced by Aaron, who made the final but TYLER LOCKETT ended his career. Also, the Sammy Watkins incident definitely made me mad.
Shaye won the pool, which he’ll probably remind me about for the next 40 years. Congrats Shaye, it was an earned victory!
89. U (Man Like) - Bon Iver
I was also a part of the first ever TSN 1260 live on-air NFL fantasy draft. Wyatt got shade for taking Dalvin Cook in round one but it was an incredibly smart decision. Kareem Hunt was not, but Wyatt was a very formidable foe throughout the season and was probably into the pool the most other than myself. Matthew Iwanyk had a great draft and bested me twice. Eric got last (he tried for a bit at least!) and will have to sing a song on air, Andrew Luck would be proud! I drafted Keenan Allen, saying it was in honor of Connor Halley, a Chargers fan who didn’t get to draft due to a wedding. Dustin Nielson responded by saying: “That’s funny, because you wouldn’t be here if Connor was here to draft!”
I got the last laugh. Dustin vs Me in the final, I’m down 22 with one player left, and Aaron Jones blasts through the Vikings D for 28. THANK YOU AARON FREAKING JONES! I won the title by a score of 177-171 in a heater of a match-up. Just let me know when my ring is ready Dusty! But also, congrats on a hard fought ending!
88. Don’t Start Now - Dua Lipa
As for hockey, my fantasy draft went extremely poorly. I finished strong to end last year’s OSHL season, grabbing a few bucks in 3rd place, but at our auction I drafted the worst goalie set ever in pool history and that took me out of contention this year. The OSHL draft is still won of the most fun thanksgiving traditions where a bunch of smart hockey guys get together and hammer out our teams. It’s the most intricate fantasy hockey draft in the world. My Uncle Blaine is a long-time member and Cam continues as commissioner who has to deal with teams not knowing math. It’s always the best test of my knowledge and keeps me fresh.
We also still do our family drafts. I enjoy turning to Aiden during those and laughing when Grant and Keith take forever to pick or someone says a name really badly wrong (Thornton Joe!). I legit haven’t won that pool since junior high, but my dad would say “Don’t Start Now!” Maybe I should use The Klaklist next time!
87. iMi - Bon Iver
There was one night when Josh was away on vacation and Ronan, Raphy and I were at his place watching YouTube videos. I enjoy small fun nights like this one was. We threw a ball at each other while giving each other dares - if you didn’t catch the ball then you HAD to do it (I don’t think we followed through on any of them).
We always end up watching THAT video (CRINGE!) as well as some of Kelsey’s YouTube channel, now archived in video history among the greats and masterpieces. We also watched the 2019 SACHS grad video, which I will probably never do ever again especially from the COUCH. Ronan and I also once watched videos on our own which included the Earl’s hair incident caught on tape. Our grad video is now five years old, and still can make me tear up, Adam Hutlet did a hell of a job.
We also got Popeyes once and man oh man I LOVE Popeyes. This whole blog is a big ad, heads up.
86. Orphans - Coldplay
Did we make an orphan joke while at our games nights at Dylan’s? Probably not, but these were some solid times. Dyl has a hot tub which is pretty sweet, and we always seem to grab Skip the Dishes (Braydon paid for mine if I remember).
We played The Voting Game often, a fairly savage game where we really dig deep into what we think of each other, but the true highlight was playing Truth Bombs. The girls went to grab McDonald’s and the guys turned it up to 11. I think it was Braydon who said Matty’s dance move would be called The Lousy Lew, which is just too good. Aaron, Colin, Dyl, Matt, Braydon and I went hard in the paint on each other in good taste and it was hilarious.
85. New House - Rex Orange County
A new place that I found myself randomly in the first few times was Halley’s Club (not owned by Connor) at West Edmonton Mall. A few of us had went to the casino but Drew, Raphy and I had enough of that noise, so we saw the sign for HALLEY’s CLUB and didn’t expect much. Coat check was free.
Then we opened the doors.
IT WAS A BANGER! There was tons of 30+ people dancing on the floor and the DJ was actually DJ DION - who has a resemblance to Austin Hauch (hey man!) - Drew tried to dance with the bride. We had a few drinks and turned up - it’s kind of like a showy old-style club you’d see in a gangster movie. For whatever reason, I love the bathrooms in there.
To see if lightning strikes twice, Matias, Kelly and I also visited there in December and IT DID! This time, there was a live band singing big time hits and then we belted out Don’t Stop Believin’ over a Stella. It’s my new party house. Here’s a picture from me in their bathroom, which is straight out of The Great Gatsby or 2001: A Space Odyssey - both.
84. That’s Life - 88-Keys (feat. Mac Miller & Sia)
This song is Mac Miller’s last song where he’s the primary vocalist and it’s great.
One night we had a fire at Lions Park and relaxed with a hackysack that was a throwback to grade ten death hack sessions. There was even a group of high school kids around us and it reminded us we’re growing up but hey - that’s life, we’ve been there too. We once used to say “AW SWEET ARE YOU DRINKING ALCOHOL!”
I kept thinking I was going to kick Ronan by accident and Aaron kept loading up these giant boots for the kill. Taylor and Adrienne came by and Adrienne brought her dog for a visit. We traded out the real fire for a covered one at Browns where Christian, Samantha, Rachel, Brenna, Braydon, among others discussed which Pixar movies are the best.
Brenna drove me home in the buggy and we had a good chat - the buggy is no longer as Brenna now owns a Mini Cooper. It already had problems but hey THAT’S LIFE! I’ll miss the buggy though.
83. Lately - Metronomy
THE TORONTO RAPTORS WON! WOOOOO!!!!!!!
RAPS IN 6 BABY!
Drew, Ronan and I celebrated beside the corner TV at Central Social Hall as history was made. Kawhi Leonard, thank you.
Jordan also introduced me to Moscato, which I had never tried, and it’s very good. I am also a white girl.
Unfortunately, Josh, Ronan, Raphy and I also found out Kawhi Leonard was leaving Toronto late one night...also at Central Social Hall. It begins where it ends. Mr. Ducharme though....that was hilarious.
Drew was in breakdown mode at Christian’s house when I told him over the phone. I actually had to call him about it because I was in shock about the Paul George trade. At least, lately, the Raptors are giving us hope they can repeat without Fun Guy.
82. About You - G Flip
You have to hand it to Christian - he sacrifices his house for us for a lot of events and he makes them about you - he gives us the pick for Movie Club and always makes us feel comfortable in his basement.
Movie Club now has a documented history because he’s been able to keep it alive for a good amount of time. I don’t attend often - or I sleep through my own pick (DAMMIT) but it’s always a fun time seeing everyone and watching a good film.
I also love the after-discussion and then we flip through good random movie scenes. That part is severely underrated. This is one of those events that keeps our friend circle strong - super grateful we still do it.
81. The Barrel - Aldous Harding
To help mix it up, Christian also added some games nights in the movie club rotation and I loved those. Secret Hitler is a super fun game that Matias introduced as well as Werewolf, where we assume fun new identities and low-key kill each other.
Matias is the game-master, which sometimes I feel bad because he’s not participating but then I realize Alex secretly enjoys watching the world crumble at the table through argument. It’s like watching monkeys shoot each other in a barrel. Christian is always fascist. There was one game where basically everyone was both Samantha Serra and the Seer.
We also played The Game of Life and we kept having to double back over that stupid donate to the orphanage space (I should have used that song for this one, DAMMIT AGAIN). Poor Samantha, I’M SORRY. Kelly ended up winning and therefore grabs the title of Best At Life.
80. Summer Days - Macklemore, Martin Garrix, Fall Out Boy
I first heard this song in Josh’s car on the way to the Prospects game. It’s a banger.
Speaking of the summer, that’s when golf season approaches.
You can buy a golf card to Ravencrest, Sandpiper and many other great courses!
Why am I saying that? Because it was part of the script for the first ever commercial I’ve ever voiced to air on a major radio station. You can hear it occasionally this holiday on TSN 1260. Chris has promised me there will be more commercials with my voice on it, so stay tuned for that in 2020. Thanks Chris, that’s a pretty awesome opportunity!
79. House of Glass - Cage the Elephant
I believe I posted a preview of the top 100 during this point, and you probably saw that giant gaming computer in the background of the IG story.
That was built by my dad as a Christmas present and it’s pretty awesome. The lights are custom to change with the beat of whatever song I’m playing, which is a very ME perk. I can’t wait in 2020 to fire up Cyberpunk on this baby. My dad plans to build more with YouTube videos explaining how he did it - and themed to NHL teams too. Sounds like a sick idea!
Thanks very much Dad! That was a super awesome present, thanks for putting the time and effort into such a cool machine for me to use!
78. Hope - Sandy (Alex G)
I honestly was a bit short on top 100 ideas this year and needed some help. Alex provided me with hope.
We hit up West Edmonton Mall and rode the Mindbender. That ride still holds up. I haven’t done it since Dayn and I did it in junior high and I totally forgot how high it is and the butterflies you get from the first drop. I also felt high walking off because my brain got shook up on the last tight loop. It truly bent my mind.
There were tons of trips to that old mall this year, it’s always something to do in a city that sometimes doesn’t have enough. Matt Mosewich and I ate lunch a few times (that’s one mention Matt keep counting), Amber and I did our tradition of Christmas shopping where I make terrible jokes and we smell candles. Ronan and I played mini golf and he kicked my ass, again. Kelly, Matias and I roamed around a few times, as did Raphy and I once. Aaron always checks the discount rack at LuLu for deals. A wild Scott can sometimes be seen at Urban and a wild Evan at Le Chateau, although based on how many times I’ve visited lately and haven’t seen him, Evan is a legendary Pokemon.
77. Blinding Lights - The Weeknd
This could be higher, but it’s still pretty new. Aaron loves it. Garrett and I first heard the debut in a Bluenotes.
My birthday had plenty of highlights - my mom, Kaitlin and I went to Moxie’s and she bought me a tin of Cookies by George. That’s heaven for me in a nutshell.
My grandparents came and visited my house for a bit, usually I just hear from my grandma sing her rendition of Happy Birthday over the phone so that was a nice change. I always love seeing my grandparents!
At night, I had like fifteen friends come to Boston Pizza for a big dinner. That was awesome since it was last minute and I didn’t know if anyone would be able to attend. Mitch helped round people up. Thanks guys for a wonderful evening! I didn’t get in one because I actually had a job interview the next morning, but there were plenty of other chances for that.
Christian paid for my meal too, because he’s the hero Gotham needs but doesn’t deserve. He is The Dark Knight.
76. Eagle Birds - The Black Keys
The New England Patriots won the Super Bowl again. BOOOOOOOMMM
I’m a Patriots fan, and yes I’ve heard your bandwagon accusations but remember that I’m also an Oilers fan - I’ve suffered enough.
Mike Serra held an awesome Super Bowl party at his place. I couldn’t believe how much food he had set out! Thanks for the effort Mike, that set-up with the projector and the seats was the best anyone could ask for and more. Thanks Samantha too! Your house is party city! (more on that later)
Matty Lew’s Rams lost because Jared Goff is a systems quarterback. Drew isn’t in the photo because he pussied out. Ronan looks like a turtle here.
75. Turn the Light - Karen O, Danger Mouse
I know I made jokes about beating him earlier, but huge thanks to Dustin Nielson & Eric for having me as a guest on the TSN 1260 roundtable twice. Being on the morning show is a surreal experience, it’s really cool to be a part of that! Especially when you pair me up with Lowetide, there really isn’t anything better than talking hockey on the air in the morning and maybe a bit of football too.
It’s also funny when we’re done and I see Jordan has sent video snapchats to a bunch of people of him listening to me on the radio - it’s helpful because I have no idea what I sound like in your car!
74. Sunflower - Vampire Weekend, Steve Lacy
Oilers games are expensive, so when I get to go to one, I’m always super grateful for the experience.
Thanks to Braydon, I got to watch Oilers vs Leafs in the lower bowl in March. Seeing McDavid getting mad at Kapanen up close is just fantastic. The Oilers scored twice in the last two minutes to make it a 3-2 game in a comeback but Zack Kassian couldn’t quite lift the last chance and they lost. We hit Mercer after and stayed until the bitter end.
Thanks to Lowetide, I got to watch the Oilers play the Sharks as Leon Draisaitl tried to hit 50 goals. Drew and I saw him score to get closer, but I’ll never forget fans cheering from the corner TOBY RIEDER every five seconds because he had 0 goals. Jordan was apparently one of them.
73. Landslide - Beirut
Some people (Ben) would say that Game of Thrones season 8 was a complete landslide - a fall from grace from a series once hailed as the greatest of all-time.
I disagree. It was flawed, but honestly entertaining and my jaw still dropped at many scenes throughout. I won’t spoil it for those of you still watching. It’s incredibly hard ending a series with so many characters, plot threads and expectations. I’ve seen much worse endings (Dexter, House of Cards, looking at you).
It was made better by being around friends to watch it. Christian held parties for us to finish the show in his basement and Ben hosted a sick Game of Thrones death pool that his engineering friend Stef won. She was greatly helped by a savage Arya theory that rang true. Denied!
I don’t think it’s my favorite series of all-time, but it sure is going down as the most talked about ever. Anna, Kelly, Evan, Brenna, Mike + Sam, Chris, many others - it’s a long list of people I discussed this show with. What a run.
72. You Shadow - Sharon Van Etten
It’s not dark inside the Combat Archery stadium - no shadows, yet somehow people still would see me behind barriers and were able to shoot their arrows straight at my head. There’s a sniper tower on each side and the barriers are actually movable all around the room.
What is combat archery? It’s foam tipped arrow dodgeball - and it’s a shit ton of fun. We had a solid group of us head out and try it - Kelly, Brenna, Mike, Jordan, Ronan, Matias and Christian gave it a shot (bad dad pun).
They also mix you in with randoms, and the randoms were good, so it was a real challenge. We pelted each other and then met Samantha at the Brewhouse for some after war delights.
Side note: My sister was called a “beacon of light” by Sharon Van Etten once. She reminded me of this as I started typing this paragraph.
71. Purple Hat - Sofi Tukker
There’s a bunch of weird colours at Laser Quest - I hadn’t gone in a few years but everything still looks the same in that building.
The guns, the sets inside, the fog, the logo - it’s all the same.
Jordan, Rachel, Kelsey, Raphy and a special appearance by my friend Jieco, who I hadn’t seen in a long time, all joined in on the shooting each other game. Jordan named himself diarrhea and when he finished top 3 in one of the games, he didn’t hear them call his name, so the girl with the scorecards had to say.
“Diarrhea. Diarrhea. Anyone? Diarrhea?” Several times.
We hit OJs after and it was a solid night. Thanks Jieco for coming, it was awesome to see you and you improved every game! Kicked my ass!
70. Goodbyes - Post Malone ft. Young Thug
Unfortunately, I had to say goodbye to something I loved doing this year.
Due to budget cuts, Saturday Sports Extra, the show I produced with Lowetide as host, was cancelled from TSN 1260. I have lots of good memories from my first produced show on the station - from Paul’s Oiler rants to the soccer report to booking my first guests to just the back-and-forth about hockey between Lowetide and I with him screaming KLAAAAK.
It was a hell of a show and they gave me a jersey with the logo on it so I can remember it forever. I couldn’t ask for a better host too - Lowetide is awesome, hilarious and extremely patient. It’ll be missed.
69. Sanctuary - Joji
Nice. Again.
Canada Day is always a busy one for me. It’s Free Agent Frenzy - the day where every team in the NHL signs new players at ridiculous salaries except that one smart team that manages to grab deals of the future. There’s also a mind blowing trade every year - this year was the Tyson Barrie trade - and an offer sheet was thrown in to boot. Aho stayed in Carolina though.
After the craziness, we’ve done things such as parties, tailgates and fireworks - this year because Canada Day fell on a Sunday, it meant fireworks was the choice. Matias, Brian and I went down to the legislature area and hung out for a few hours. It was a real nice time, we made jokes about....well, me - especially after I tried to make this leap across stones in the water in front of a crowd and instead dropped a leg into my watery grave below. Luckily, you couldn’t see much about the failure on Matias’ terrible phone screen. It was nice outside so I wasn’t soaked for long.
Overall, a great night and a good birthday for our country. I wonder where that mystery girl went...
68. Cafe Amarillo - Local Natives
In July, we had an excellent family gathering at our house, something that hadn’t been done in a long while. My Auntie Heather, Uncle George, Auntie Joanne, Uncle Calvin, Auntie Linda and Uncle Mike - as well as my cousin Alex and his girlfriend Polina and my sister Kaitlin and her boyfriend Mike all came for a fire in the backyard and some good catching up.
I broke one of my cardinal rules.
“Don’t get tipsy at the family gathering.” - I never have really had drinks with family before, until now.
Oops. I was a bit more talkative and I can tell people thought it was funny. My Uncle George and I share a love of salsa and Auntie Linda, the link to that story on flight MH370 is here - it’s one of the best and most intriguing web articles I’ve ever read (anyone else who wants to read something, go have a long look).
At the end of the night, Mitch picked me up and we talked in his car in a lightning storm. We should do another one in 2020 - and this time, Uncle Jav, Auntie Karen, Eve and Nico, and Ben, Kristy & Amy, we need you guys too!
67. Outside - MorMor
I like when people just get together on a quiet night, shoot the shit, have a few beers and just chill out.
Whether it was at Drew’s house, Taylor’s house, Christian’s basement or OJs or the A&W parking lot, it’s the small things that really help make up a good year. Reggie is now with Swoop as a flight attendant, which did make OJs feel emptier.
Sometimes these good small hangouts happened outside - I especially enjoyed the ODR days or nights with Aaron where we just found a rink and played hockey for hours. We lost so many pucks and played plenty of 1v1. Alex Beach joined in on one of them too. It’s always nice to shred some ice.
Another one of the good small events? Hitting up the corn maze, which is now annual. Rachel and Kelsey organize that and it’s always a good time where we just get lost and make jokes.
66. I’m Not Alright - Loud Luxury ft. Bryce Vine
I’m NOT alright when my team is eliminated from March Madness, but at least I know that most of the rest of the people in the pool are also feeling the pain. Braydon, Mike, Drew and Christian have held watch parties for games so we can all witness our brackets turning to shit.
This year we had a record of 23 people in our big bracket - Mike Serra went bold and took Wofford, which Matty Lew thinks has one of the best logos ever. Josh was fully on the Kentucky board with P.J. Washington. Amy and I saw Gonzaga die in sad elite 8 fashion. Christian actually won money after heartbreak for years - his parents did as well. Drew put up a fight for the 2nd straight year to only go down swinging in the final four. Gerry was the first eliminated and all three Salcedos saw themselves in last - what a twist as normally it’s a Bragg member, but Carter finished 2nd. I thought Thorsley was going to win it all again but he was upset in one game and that was it.
For the 2nd time in our bracket history, Emily Groenenboom, thanks to Virginia and Texas Tech, came out as the victor. 2020 looks to be the most wide open year in the tournament ever - good luck and prepare for MORE PAIN FOLKS!
65. EARFQUAKE - Tyler, The Creator
One of my dreams came true very early in my career - getting to be a part of the TSN 1260 NHL Draft coverage.
On a panel with Guy Flaming, Andrew Peard and Lowetide, I helped produce and was able to provide input throughout. Unfortunately there was basically no trades to break on air but it was still so fun. We’ll see if I’m right about Ville Heinola being better than Philip Broberg.
I hope I get to do that for many years to come! Also Matty if you’re reading this, I’m very down to cover as much of the World Juniors as possible locally when they arrive in Edmonton and Red Deer in 2020.
64. Go - The Black Keys
First, want to add a shout out to Larissa, who had a journal published that she was a big part of - to REALLY REALLY dumb it down, it was about red blood cells and preserving them. Feel free to correct me! Go Larissa!
Some days you just look outside and say “Let’s Go!”
That’s what Matias and I did a few times this year - one of those outings was to Elk Island National Park, a nature haven that neither of us had ever tried going to before. It was beautiful. We were reminded of it from posts Taylor Maton made about heading over and checking it out.
The water is calm, the forest is full of life (we saw a million frogs) and we even saw two weddings in full bloom. Matias is extremely knowledgeable about the trees and plant life. We took a 45 minute hike and walked across some long boardwalks over the wetlands.
If you’re ever bored and need somewhere peaceful to reset, this is your jam.
63. Uncomfortably Numb - American Football ft. Hayley Williams
I enjoy being comfortably numb myself, AKA drunk. One of those nights was when Raphy, Brian, Matias, Kelly and I hit the town and went out to Whyte Ave.
First we ate at Dadeo - you need to eat there. First of all, the waitress had an alt-J t-shirt so I know she’s cool, but also it has scrumptious po-boys that fill your heart and soul.
After, despite a SERIOUS SCARE YOU GUYS WTF LOL, we kept the night going and got a bucket of liquor at O’Byrne’s. Maybe we should have danced at the front window but we did witness reddit/r/cringe in the making. It was one of those nights where you feel like you can do anything as we belted songs loudly in Matias’ car over the Walterdale Bridge.
Also, we saw Lana and waved. HI LANA!! I also saw Lana at WEM with Matias and yelled LAAAAAANNNAAA - but she didn’t respond. Probably embarrassed to know me.
62. Make it Better - Anderson .Paak ft. Smokey Robinson
I first heard this in the car with Levi coming back to the station from a shift at the Full House Lottery homes - Levi easily makes me laugh the most on a shift, probably cause he tells it straight and sees life in a similar way to me.
That Full House shift certainly got creamy.
The quote that made me laugh from him the most was a guy walked by the Bear Growler at Fringe and in an extremely high voice said “Can ya hook me up with a sticker!” and Levi didn’t hear him fully and said “Rock on brother” and just walked away. For some reason I started crying laughing.
Work is pretty good when there’s someone with you that makes you laugh.
61. Heavenly - Cigarettes After Sex
I filled in as producer on The Jason Gregor Show for Connor Halley once in August - I’m actually doing it again on Friday.
I got super fortunate that one of the guests on the show was Jarome Iginla, one of my favorite NHL players of all-time. I got to phone him up and talk to him briefly before Jason had him on the show, a heavenly moment.
My dad was the man who sent an email to St. Albert City Council to get the ball rolling on the Jarome Iginla Arena, which is the new name of the Kinex Arena in St. Albert. My dad got to meet Jarome, who thanked him for doing what he did and according to my dad, remembered talking to me at TSN 1260.
Every young hockey player should use Iginla as their role model. One of the toughest, classiest and best players to ever skate in the NHL. Also - who passed to Crosby for the Golden Goal at the 2010 Olympics? You guessed it.
60. Kids in ‘99 - Death Cab for Cutie
I’ve been traveling around since 1999 and I always have plans to go on trips, although none of them came to fruition in 2019.
In 2020, we’re definitely hitting up Canmore & Banff for the annual winter sloshfest. I’d love to also hike in Canmore & Banff in the summer, as well as Waterton again and Whistler would be high on my list.
Tofino and Disneyland seem like distant dreams, but you never know.
Brian, there’s a moment in this song where Ben Gibbard says gas leaks.
59. Naeem - Bon Iver
In Hebrew, Naeem means present.
I love being present at Cafe Amore with my dad, Kaitlin and her boyfriend Mike. I CANNOT recommended this place enough and I do every single year, it’s the best Italian in Edmonton, it’s the best restaurant in Edmonton PERIOD. We saw Dylan and Pam there once, they’d recommend it too!
I always love splitting a Caesar Salad and then ordering a Chicken Parmigiana with a white sauce linguine while my dad and Kaitlin talk about what dumbassery Donald Trump did this week.
Thanks Dad, I always appreciate when we can go out and eat this delicacy!
58. Superposition - Daniel Ceasar, John Mayer
I was once put in a position recently where I was forced to watch High School Musical: The Series at Jordan’s house - please, never again WILL!
Otherwise, Jordan’s place was the home for some really fun game nights this year. We played The Voting Game, Spyfall, a bit of Werewolf and a bit of Secret Hitler.
Arguably though, the most fun game we’ve played happened just last weekend. It was 1am and nearly everyone else had left, leaving Jordan, Lindsay, Raphy, Alex Beach and I to play some rounds of Quiplash, a Jackbox TV game that’s always funny. We kinda whipped through the other games on the party pack before reaching the last one called BombCorp. It looked dumb, but whatever let’s try it.
IT WAS SO GOOD! It forces four players to work together to solve the puzzle of which wire to cut or else the bomb explodes. I don’t think I’ve played a game that encouraged more co-operation than this one.
We ended up staying until 3am playing that game straight. Lindsay was so tired that at one point, she suggested cutting the only wire that we WEREN’T supposed to cut out of five. We only got halfway done too - there’s more to explore there. Thanks for hosting Jordan!
57. Flake - FIDLAR
We had a games night at Braydon’s where we played Truth Bombs and as you saw in a point from earlier, that game can get savage, but for whatever reason, this one was DOUBLE SAVAGE.
I’m pretty sure Ben was tossed every Asian joke every made. “If Ben was an animal what would he be?” “Siamese cat” Don’t worry, Ben loved the game enough to buy it as a Christmas present.
Braydon got targeted, I got targeted, Ronan and Christian kinda did and Will got a few good ones thrown his way. It was an all-out war.
Every round became a bunch of answers I absolutely cannot post here - accompanied by someone going “Orange Justice” and someone going “Because he’s fast” At one point, Braydon’s animal was chosen to be a cheetah “because he’s fast”.
I honestly cried laughing at this games night more than any other night in 2019. Signed, DJ Virgin Radio. Also, if you want to avoid things getting savage, don’t call Matty Lew a flake - he’ll GO OFF!
56. Strangers - City & Colour
Raphy bought me tickets for my birthday to go see Dallas Green and City and Colour - always a treat!
We ended up with floor seats sitting right in eye-line of Jordan and Aaron. We also saw Hank there, so we all met up at the end and then Raphy and I followed up at OJs for the traditional post-concert munch.
This was my 4th time seeing Dallas Green perform and it always somehow gets better than the last one. Thanks Raphy for the tickets....”starts singing parodies of Woman”
55. Ruckus - Konata Small, Crispin
It feels like a ruckus is about to start when Evan, Kelly, James and I start playing Settlers of Catan - it only takes one robber move to set everyone off against one another. Evan, Kelly and I have all won our fair share of games but James fought forever for a big win. He’d come so close only for us to snatch the glory out of his hands.
Finally, James won in the 2nd half of the year. It was like Tim Robbins leaving the sewers at the end of The Shawshank Redemption.
If I’m not asleep by accident, our games nights always provide a challenge and James laughing is still one of the best soundbites in life.
JAMESON. Let’s get a round of Halo 3 back in there boys.
54. Zulu Screams - GoldLink
Our family floor hockey league is still going strong - it’s incredible my Uncle Lorne still plays well honestly, he’s almost 70 and still can score plenty of goals. Darcy, Calvin and Rob are still extremely tough on your stick and shoot screamers at the net.
The young guns put up a hell of a fight - Desmond goes hard or goes...in net, or messages me about my Reddit fame. Marshall has dad strength. Damien has stopped me on the most breakaways of any goalie I’ve faced and also robs me continuously - at least he drives me to Rosslyn as a consolation. Braeden is the most likely to leave me with a bruise on my leg and is a fierce defender.
Tera, Patty, Joanne (when her thumb is healed!) and Rob’s daughters round out the girls. Harley also shows up to a lot of games - when he’s not molding Levi into a future teacher king.
Afterwards, we hit Boston Pizza, where we gave Desmond the girl quiz to find out which girl is the perfect match. There were some questionable answers given.
53. BLOW - Ed Sheeran, Chris Stapleton, Bruno Mars
Here comes the parties, lots to talk about this year. None of them blow.
We’ll start with Taylor’s surprise party for Braydon, which had one hell of a start I won’t discuss here other than a Jordan quote: “There I am just walking up her driveway to the party lololol”
My favorite part of it though was a spirited movie discussion between Matty Lew, Ronan and Christian and I. I think I made very valid points about Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino but I can’t remember exactly what they were - hopefully just “These guys know how to DIRECT!” I wouldn’t be surprised if Matt defended Blade Runner 2049 in that chat.
I also think there was a heated pong battle that I argued about but in reality I probably really sucked.
52. Miracle Man - Oliver Tree
Ronan came through as the miracle man Santa Claus at a party at Taylor’s for Christmas two weeks ago. Santa Keohane gave everyone at the party a Christmas gift and spread cheer throughout the basement. A lot of us wore Christmas sweaters or lights or Justin’s perfectly tiny Santa hat.
I also spilled a lot during this party, for which I deeply apologize to Taylor as she’s had to deal with spills (usually from Drew) for years now. Bless up for the miracle woman. Taylor definitely was fighting back to this party’s hi-jinks!
Overall it was an excellent time and thanks Santa for the extra iced tea!
51. Songbirds - Silversun Pickups
The last of the parties Taylor hosted involved Aaron having a crazy idea for everyone to write on my body in marker - so there I was standing there shirtless getting autographed by all of my friends including Raphy or Ronan writing Call God. I think Jordan and Mitch wrote some stuff like “poo” and “fart” I’m sure.
Could you ask for a better situation?
Thanks Taylor for hosting all these events - despite the phantom spill by the bar, us shouting louder than songbirds and the wild animals that show up in your stable, you continue hosting events and cleaning up after everyone throughout. It’s a truly a testament to your patience that you put up with us! Thank you!
Warning: This next image may be too white for some audiences.
50. Hey, Ma - Bon Iver
Hey Mom!
The day before Canada Day, we saw Jamie Cole host a rocking party at her place. James had a very fun time at her place before, remember!
There’s always a big flip cup game - I’m not a big fan of flip cup, I’m more of a honeycomb guy or monster cup, but the horses were in the back for this one, the people let it buck.
We always end up in Jamie’s sun room discussing who was the best basketball player or playing Truth or Dare and it’s quite intense, usually with shouting over each other. I just remember Christian laughing at a question I was asked that was beyond dangerous. Thanks Jamie for always putting out food, decorating the place in Canadian flags and hosting a good time!
49. Bags - Clairo
Aaron had a great idea for a different kind of party - we all wore white shirts and people wrote on other people everywhere all night. How come all of Aaron’s ideas involve writing on bodies? Well, the people at this party weren’t bodies.
My shirt got bombarded. There was an infamous poll on the back of my shirt. Anna drew a wonderful picture of the Joker on the front and at least that was cool. Raphy kept drawing random shit on my shirt that were very descriptive in nature.
Our shirts at the end were so savage that we’d probably need bags to hide it from the world leaving Aaron’s house. Thanks for hosting Aaron, this was definitely one of your best ideas. My shirt has a ton of bad stuff on it so here’s a sample of a good picture. Aaron also got on Barstool Alberta for doing a somersault that hurt, check that out here.
48. Faith - Bon Iver
Do you believe in ghosts? Brenna’s Halloween party decorations made me think that maybe these Halloween creatures truly do exist. Headless Barbie dolls lined the ceiling to highlight the creepiness.
Even Brenna’s contacts were scary, Jesus Christ. It seemed like there were at least six people, including myself, who dressed in a onesie. Smart and cheap.
One of my highlights was Ronan, Christian, Raphy, Mike Serra and I chilling in Brenna’s garage near the end and just laughing our asses off when we realized how many things we had in common...
Thanks Brenna, you always put heart and soul into your events and it always shows! I apologize but your head here is going to be massive because I don’t have time to re-size it right now.
47. Black Bull - Foals
If you happen to be Josh’s parents and reading this, turn away now.
We’re about to talk about four of the five parties Josh hosted this year, so as Walter White once said, tread lightly.
We’ll start with the one Josh held in the summertime. I had a round-the-couch discussion with Isabelle, Brooke and Anna which honestly felt like an episode of The Social. I love talking to Brooke and Anna at parties - in a world of chaos, they are a voice of reason. Our talks are also thoughtful and never fail to be interesting. They’re never like the bulls in a china shop you sometimes see at our parties.
Nice to see Isabelle again too! I asked her about her many travels this year and it’s always good to hear how she’s doing! Congrats to her twin sister Andrea, who got engaged in 2019 as well!
46. Descending - Tool
Descending down the Josh party rabbit hole, we arrive at Drew’s birthday party - also Kelly’s birthday - also Will’s birthday. Damn that November 17 sure is busy.
We asked the people to full send and they absolutely did. 11pm to 4am is an absolute blur. There were massive pong games, Sam Saunders and I discussing Lord of the Rings, “demonstrations” in the main room, and maybe the most surprising thing of all, Drew wasn’t the crazy one. Drew had a long day of skiing so he was a bit tired but tried to fight through it. That didn’t stop the people calling him a body. People thought we lost Raphy halfway through the night but he was just grabbing his parents from the airport before joining on the fun.
I woke up and Raphy was on the seat across from me at 10am. There was a bag of Munchies in front of me. I have no idea how they got there. I had to ask Anna to be our historian and answer “what exactly happened?” - good ol’ fashion fun.
45. The End of the Game - Weezer
Our first ever edition of Friendsgiving was a massive success. The food was so damn good - Raphy brought an intricate Hawaiian looking ham feast, Ronan supplied punch for everyone. Josh made his signature mac-and-cheese. Everyone just brought their A game on the dishes. I think I just took everything and piled my plate up. Dyl even bought donair Nitza’s, VERY clutch! Those meatballs - I think I ate 40. I brought Popeyes (lol) and the people seemed pleased.
At the end of the Oilers game, the party was back on! I had a migraine issue for this one, so big thanks to Kelly for helping grab me later on and being patient with me. SHADES! It was awesome to have such a big table eat and then be merry. It really highlighted how much of a family we can sometimes be. Ronan also led the way in dancing to ABBA later on.
Thanks to everyone for making this work, including Josh, Ronan and Taylor for setting it all up, and maybe it’ll be a tradition going forward! Check out that action shot of Dylan eating.
44. Wild Roses - Of Monsters and Men
We arrive at January - probably the best party I’ve ever been to. I’m not quite sure why - maybe it was the mood of the room, maybe it was the mix of people - but sometimes everything just lines up for everyone at the same time and you get a night like this.
It felt like the group was together the entire time and it went LONG without people leaving. Almost the entire party was still kicking around at 4am, which never, ever, EVER occurs. Raphy and Aaron fell asleep on the floor together but they were still present!
Thanks Josh a ton for cleaning, preparing your house and giving us the chance to have such fun opportunities like this one. There was no drama, just straight up delivered one hell of a time. I was smiling ear-to-ear on my way home.
43. Might Be Right - White Reaper
I might be right when I say that Samantha made sure we had the most comfortable party of all-time - because I absolutely approve of a pajama party.
I remember everyone tossing balloons at each other in the basement. There was some pretty good pong games with Mike Serra as my sidekick. I wore the same Pickle Rick onesie you saw in the Christmas party photos above. I’M PICKLE RICK!
Unsurprisingly, I had some good chats with Anna. I remember the boys were all playing Nintendo upstairs. Drew and I got in some sort of physical war in the basement and then we played Truth or Dare that had some very interesting positional questions. Thanks Samantha for your hard work in making that happen. PS: I don’t have a 20s costume yet, but I have ideas! Definitely think we’re going to class it up soon.
42. Fear Inoculum - Tool
First of all, THANK YOU TOOL FOR COMING BACK! What an album!
Next, I go into Rachel’s birthday party because she had this outside and it was a hoot. Two random people showed up at some point and started talking to Colin and Dyl for decently long time. We had some educational talks about life on the hammock from Dyl, a wonderful teacher.
Later on, there were only a few of us left around the fire in the dark. Rachel, Raphy, Drew, Ronan, Erik, Kelly to name a few. I was dared by Ronan to somersault from one end of the yard to the other in just my underwear and I did so - and there’s video but no I won’t be posting that. Raphy, Drew and Rachel also did some hilarious dares. Boy when you think about it, truth or dare was a common theme this year.
Thanks for hosting this Rachel, you seem to do a party every year that’s an absolute hit, inside or outside. That was a gooder!
41. Jet Black - Anderson .Paak ft. Brandy
Samantha kept the good party ideas coming in May when she decided to do an 80s themed party. Jordan, Matias and I went to Value Village and I found this perfect 80s neon green blazer that actually ended up matching Mike Van Hoof’s jacket.
Everyone looked splendid and retro. Samantha’s playlist was all 80s and it was straight fire. We looked like the real Breakfast Club. This party was screaming “Don’t You Forget About Me” and clearly it won’t be forgotten.
The party ended in YOU GUESSED IT! TRUTH OR DARE! My god. Raphy fell asleep and we thought about operating him like a puppet like Weekend at Bernie’s. Weekend at Raphy’s. I kept laughing with Matty Lew at the end of the room. What a night Samantha, thanks again. As The Cure said “Just Like Heaven”
40. Clarity - Polish Club
Jordan had a moment of clarity this year that was big time - he thought Balls Deep should make a return. The band is back together with a few new faces on board - Nat instantly became one of our best players. She’s excellent at battling along the wall and finding open spaces to score - she has 14 goals already including a key playoff goal! Brenna joined and is also tenacious on the ball - she’s improving every single game and sometimes her sister plays too! Kelsey has potted a few goals and finds me open quite often with good passes. Mike Serra is a block machine on D (Brenna too) but we tried him at forward near the end of the year and we were SO close to getting him a goal. It’s coming soon!
Drew, Ronan, Raphy, Pam and I were back with Jordan leaving halfway to manage Dragons and Aaron subbing for a few games. Levi subbed for a game and scored a game-tying goal with 0.1 seconds left. Lindsay played a few games before getting unfairly clocked by a guy.
Who could forget the new goalie either? Wyatt has made some big ass saves for us and gave us stability in between the pipes. You can’t spell Vezina without Zieger, I think.
This is some of the most fun I’ve ever had playing hockey and not going to lie, I’m playing pretty well too. Don’t call Drew “Kyle Palmieri” or he’ll get pissed. We’re back in January!
39. Now I’m In It - HAIM
This idea may have been the most original of the decade for us, never mind the year. We got all dressed up and waltzed on over to Little White School to partake in a Clue murder mystery for Samantha’s birthday.
The clues could be found all over the property in order to narrow down and figure out who killed Christian’s sister Alex. Now I’m in it! The super sleuths took a gander outside, in vents, behind pianos etc. in a fun scavenger hunt. Afterwards, Christian’s parents came in hands loaded with food for us to munch and we ate dishes we brought as well. This was so awesome.
Big thanks to Christian and his parents, Alex, Samantha - basically anyone who helped make it happen. We also recorded this Scooby Doo spoof, so enjoy!
youtube
38. Piece of Your Heart - MEDUZA, Goodboys
As many of you know, I loved my dog Kosmo, who passed away two years ago. Thankfully, another dog has stolen a piece of my heart.
Xena came home in May for us and is a tiny ball of energy. She runs faster than any dog I’ve seen, goes crazy when I come home and constantly wants to play. Other than the annoying yapping, I hope Xena is part of our lives for many years to come!
37. Fresh Roses - Juke Ross
This song deserves a special shout out to Nat, who sent me a great playlist with this track in early summer that I used for walks and will use in the future. Nat has a bright future ahead, she’s smart and willing to help the people she cares about feel more peace and love in their lives. Her heart is in the right place and she wants this world to be a better one for herself and others. 2020 will be a fulfilling year for Nat, I have no doubt about it.
When I think of fresh roses, I think of Kelly, Matias and I having big time adventures around St. Albert and Edmonton. We explored every tree, plant, political office (Lol) and pond. We found a duck-feeding haven, circled Beaumaris Lake and unveiled the lost side of Grandin. We even shot a few arrows and lost them - well, except one. Matias said “AIM HIGHER” so I did...I shot so far that it landed by the welcome sign to Poundmaker - probably won’t be doing that ever again! Here’s a picture of a hole I almost stepped in by the duck pond only to find there was a water vole peaking its head from beneath.
36. Home - Caribou
The explorations of Matias, Kelly and I continued at the Muttart Conservatory right before it closed for a long, long time. I had never been and it’s quite beautiful there - lots of funky displays and flowers with weird ass names I’ve never heard of. There was also a DJ spinning beats to absolutely nobody, which was really odd. We decided to unleash our “inner Alvina” and take some glamour photos outside by the pyramids. The results were stunning. This is our home boys.
35. RNP - YBN Cordae, Anderson .Paak
For those of you who don’t know yet, I am the new producer of The Basketball Show with host Paul Sir and an expert at booking guests in Brian Swane on TSN 1260, airing Saturdays from 10am - 12am. I took over for Shane Clausing, a friend of mine who is trying his luck as a news and sports anchor in Grand Prairie. I’m very excited to be back on a regular show and I look forward to following the NBA and March Madness even harder than before! I’ve already done a few shows and I helped edit a podcast for 3x3 basketball with FIBA that should be available soon!
You can listen to past shows, and sometimes hear my voice, here.
34. Harmony Hall - Vampire Weekend
It sure felt like the weather was in harmony with Matias and I when we headed out for a day trip to Calgary.
It started out as a beautiful day in the Calgary Zoo and most of the animals came out to play. I loved the penguins and bears like usual but the playful monkeys (the colobus babies especially) really impress. The zoo has a great variety of animals to never disappoint.
After that, we hit Heritage Park and the Gasoline Alley Museum. The vintage cars are hilarious. I especially loved the old-style fur trading post, the original Polar Express called the Caterpillar and the boat that went around the lake that surrounded the park. It’s very similar to Fort Edmonton but has a few tricks up its sleeve to be different.
When the rain finally hit, we found a literal hole-in-the-wall restaurant called Ten Foot Henry, only marked by a sign with a cartoon baby’s face on it outside. We walk in and it’s PACKED but they give us the best seat in the house across hell’s kitchen. The apple cider, spaghetti, salmon and dessert is delectable. I can’t recommend this place more. They even give you a postcard at the end for coming in.
We ended the trip with a lap around the beautiful Prince Island Park. This day put all other days to shame with the amount we accomplished. Matias, thanks for driving and coming with me on a day that felt like a week in the best way possible.
33. Coincide - Catfish & The Bottlemen
Every June from the past three years coincided with a rendezvous out to Mount Robson for a big group camping trip. This year, we brought out some big dick energy. Lots of Shell Nitro and Diesel spilled all over the grounds. Erik at one point said “I’m everyone’s dad.” “No where are my REAL friends?”
I’m shocked there were no bears because there was food and beer all over the ground. People could just ransack the ground and grab enough to live and party for weeks.
In 1995, Michael Jordan said I’M BACK. It was a true Cinderella story. I love the fresh air though, it’s better than when stuff stinks. To throw an abbreviation out there, MMSF. A lot of this won’t make any sense.
32. Longshot - Catfish & The Bottlemen
More Robson: That poor rental car from Pogo just got straight abused.
James’ car got toilet papered inside and out. Kelly, James and I adventured into Jasper and ate some damn good pizza. Saucer King while looking at the mountain above is still sweet. Raphy and I almost died on the way back. I also loved when the Hoe Squad did a recap lunch at Jasper Pizza only for us to come home and hit OJs immediately for a recap dinner.
I wish there was only one fire, but I enjoyed sitting around with Mitch, Scott, Jordan, Will, Erik and others still. Of course, TRUTH OR DARE happened.
Big thanks to Rachel for making this happen. When I booked it the first year, I thought it was a long shot for it to happen again but instead Rachel came in and made the trips even better. I definitely approve of more camping in 2020! Also, here is a picture of sleepy Flem.
31. Mover Awayer - Hobo Johnson
The other big trip away that we go on as a group is in Banff. Let’s start by summarizing Friday:
We met Johnny, the local idiot, who at one point I saw jump into a snowy bush. A bunch of us hit the bowling alley and got loaded. Raphy and I probably had the worst IPA ever. Drew somehow still found his way to the Sasquatch. We threw snowballs at each other and another cabin’s window. Josh was in one and woke up his entire cabin. We had a nice circle outside Hidden Ridge form in the middle of the road and hung out there for an hour or so. Dylan Larkin scored a sick goal. Matias caught us destroying his bed for a second. Matt had a fun moment during the Voting Game. I only heard about Hot Seat and didn’t participate but it sounded saucy.
It was a great start to a superb mountain jaunt.
30. Breaking Down - The Black Keys
Saturday in Banff is when we break down and go bananas. It’s Sasquatch Night!
Raphy is out there on the dance floor tapping shoulders. At one point he tapped Amy’s shoulder, Amy said “Hey Raphy what?” and he forgot he had done it and was confused. Aaron fell asleep, woke back up and chugged a time machine in the funniest snap of 2019. Jordan would finish his drinks and just leave them on the ground and walk away. We met a girl who swore she knew Sean Monahan and Jake Virtanen better than ahem, most. Pick two. Sewer. Too short.
Pacini was a staple, again. Will brought the funny remarks. Mike Serra was a bro and bought me a time machine. Colin and I lost at pong and had to do the shot ski. Matty Lew pulled a Grandpa Simpson. Hank found his long-lost best friend and they found peace...I think that’s happened right?
Big thanks to Aaron for throwing this all on his credit card and taking the leap of faith that people will pull through - it always takes balls but the man delivers.
29. Are You Bored Yet? - Wallows, Clairo
I included this song just to see if you’ve read this far and haven’t yawned yet.
My grandparents are never boring. They’re always fun to be around and make Kaitlin, Lilly and I laugh all the time. They’re coming over for Christmas dinner (probably right when I post this) and Grandma is bringing her famous perogies (which are also famous because of Bernice). I’m pumped!
My Uncle Greg & Kim are also coming, where I expect my uncle to mention he already found this blog on the internet and ask when I’m finally going to buck up and get the car to replace the Fit.
Grandma, Grandpa, Greg and Kim, I love you all. Thanks for being there for me and for being great people to look up to for all of these years. XOXOXO.
28. Lo/Hi - The Black Keys
Work has many highs and lows - one of the high points is definitely working with any of the TSN 1260 crew.
Eric and I read menus and hung out at The Canadian Brewhouse a lot, one of my favorite shifts to ever do. He’s engaged now, congrats to him and Dani! Tyler and I rep SACHS while he shows me how to hit the audio with a classic soft knee. Matty Iwanyk is one of the nicest and most helpful guys you’ll ever meet - I had fun doing Eskimos shows with him. Hernan always sees me and says “Klak Daddy”, Connor Halley and I talk about how he endures the pain of being a Chargers fan and he recommends our circle goes house-boating ASAP. Lowetide thought I didn’t know Citizen Kane but I really didn’t know the other 90% of references he tossed out while I produced his show. I enjoyed our car rides talking about the Oilers to the station like a pre-show. Dusty finds ways to get me involved more and I always appreciate when he shouts me out on morning broadcasts on location. Dean Millard is no longer there but the chemistry we found on Sports Night really helped me learn radio and he gets tons of credit. Dave Jamieson is the quote king and probably the most wise person ever.
If you don’t know, I also produce lots of Edmonton Oil Kings games and work with Corey Graham + Andrew Peard often. They’re super funny, patient dudes that make my job a lot more fun and they completely take away the pressures of a live game. Professionals. Guy Flaming was also funny and I’ll be listening to his WJC preview.
Of course, don’t forget Wyatt, my compadre and secret lover (sorry man I had to tell them) at this station and Shane bringing the real sugar. Both of these guys have good careers ahead - people really love Wyatt + Tyler’s new AJHL show as they should.
27. Everything Else Has Gone Wrong - Bombay Bicycle Club
I do more than just TSN at Bell, so there’s other work people to acknowledge.
I’ll mention Chris later, YOU CAN WAIT. Levi keeps it real “ummm SIRRRR”. Declan and I talk football like it’s religion (because it is) and Garrett and I discuss Seattle’s chances to win every week it seems. Montana tells you how it is and I actually never know what she’s going to say but I know it’ll be hilarious. Alex is ambitious and going to do some cool shit with music. Dwayne is my top sports conspiracy theorist and I loved talking basketball and Oilers with him. I may have worked my last shift ever with Nash, which means less work philosophy chats and shifts going to absolute shit for the weirdest reasons. I just trigger Tora by saying her favorite bands are trash. Ty and I talk Oilers and then he gives me a disapproving look if I talk about other things because he knows I’m wacky. Evan and I never went on those K-Days rides and it haunts me. Ben had to endure me talking for long truck rides and Mickey and I talked GoT.
I shared a few laughs with my bosses Terry, Nikita and Liz at different times - Nikita called me the street team oracle, which is absolutely accurate. Zac is now a father, big congrats to his new addition to the family and condolences to his Steelers. Also, congrats to Christyne, who moved to the UK and will eventually find Hogwarts and live there I’d bet.
Bernard moved to Fort St. John and we talk industry all the time. Tony, Josh and Brenden are killing it with the Oilers, Oil Kings and Oilers Now respectively - long careers ahead. Sarah is now a promo coordinator at Stingray, well deserved for a great person. Cooper, sorry about the Panthers man. Mariah’s dog is sick and I slightly butchered her show once but she’s still cool as a cucumber. I see you Teagan! Isabelle is finishing school and will ace that! Ian & Chelsea are nailing their new hosting roles and Chelsea was on Big Brother! McCord bought me a Rick & Morty tray that I will use very soon! Scott is on an airplane a lot and travelling in a dream. Hannah sounds great on Play 107, Brayden sounds great on Now and CK/Shannon are making it big in Ontario. Kat and I are already at the stage where we basically get super personal and I can say offensive jokes. Violent P...great song! Edgy! I hear everyone rave about Kelsey’s lashes work, honestly I do. Ray Chambers, this guy is THE MAN and taught me so much!
I still keep track of hosts in my building, NAIT peeps and ex-work people - there’s so many to name. Tesla texted me from Toronto for my birthday and it seems like JVCED is doing some real cool shit. I still see Darren from time-to-time for a hug and Carlos always seems like he’s having a blast - same could be said for Maria living an uplifting life. Jesse is still incredibly friendly and Craig talks Leafs with me on Twitter. Kris got a new job, Denaya is engaged! Meggan and I reminiscence about the good ol days. I ran into Emily at Fringe and she’s always doing something interesting and full of artistic vision. Toby, JRob, Warren, Matt D, Tom - all super chill nice guys I love running into at the station or Brewhouse or when they find my $100 bill. JRyan, Lorenz + Stacie always seem busy in Lloyd, Fort Mac and at Sony. Tyson was in St. A and his YouTube game is still strong. Nate is on a morning show now. ICU is stronger than ever for Rob and Kevin may video my wedding someday. Boris, mic drop. Janessa was on the other side of the fence for an Oil Kings game once leading me through the building this time!
There’s remotes with Pam where we shoot the shit, ran into Kathy a few times, Jesse W and I talking radio or him staring me down as creepily as possible or shit disturbing, Cruise with his dog and Britt when we talk movies and Tinder dates - man there’s too many people to mention! I definitely didn’t list them all, but thanks to everyone helping me along the way in my career, especially when everything goes wrong!
26. Circles - Post Malone
I told Ronan at first I hated this song. Oops.
Lilly can draw circles pretty well! My little sister is learning every day and just had her first Christmas concert. She still never stops talking and consistently has the energy to do whatever. Lilly can read now and gets excited from anything that comes her way in life - it’s a great quality to keep. They grow up so fast...
Merry Christmas Lilly! Enjoy your new LeapPad!
25. This Life - Vampire Weekend
KAITLIN THIS POINT IS ABOUT YOU - there now you can’t miss it!
My older sister had to go through some hard things this year but came through stronger than ever before - she never lost her spirit and will and got to still hit up Montreal, Las Vegas and BC. Kaitlin is also nailing school as she joins her brother in the Ook squad and her Dill Pickle Doodles are extremely cute. She’s going on a big trip in 2020 to Australia and Singapore and I’m a bit jealous - that’s pretty sick. She also got me back into John Oliver and I needed that in this life.
Merry Christmas Kaitlin and MIke! “Fist bump” Grandma: “Ouch”
24. Light Years - The National
I feel the teachers and students in education are way ahead of me in life - a lot of them have jobs and heavy responsibility to shape the future of our society.
Raphy, Rachel, Matias, Levi - lots of friends either starting their careers or full on teaching already. Raphy already taught grade one! Rachel is teaching grade five!
Amy just graduated and is ready to teach our kids how to go full sicko mode. Let em know please.
Braydon has already lived with the responsibility of driving us kids all around - and we are absolutely kids in the car with him. Thank you Braydon, it’s always under appreciated!
Dyl is going to be that wise uncle one day that gathers around all the kids and teaches them with the wag of a finger. He’ll be a fun teacher to have.
Knowing Eve, I’d love to sit in her class just to see her give a deserving annoying kid the business.
Emily would teach her kids how to win in sports gambling starting in high school - always bet on Harvard!
Miss Dugan’s class likely would be perfect for Lilly - Shannon always comes up with cool crafts or projects for her kids to do and with her kindness and patience, I’d be 100% confident she’d make Lilly enjoy class a ton. Au Revoir Dugs.
Andrea is absolutely killing it - she finished a bunch of her schooling early and has already helped create key resources for our teachers to use in their classrooms today. DAISY WON YAY!!! Her long-time boyfriend Mike also got a big time job in Fort Mac and still had time to send me a picture of a plane from his desk. Keep enjoying that Costa Rica sun!
23. RUNAWAY - half-alive
Matty Lew is the runaway winner for most quotable of my friends. When he’s not losing it over a video game, he’ll show up mid-party in full Blade Runner gear or comes to play pool and never fails to create laughter.
The way Matt tells stories is so unique and hilarious that people basically just adopted it like a character. I find myself saying stuff like Matt all the time. Drew does, Rachel does, Ronan does. I’m 99% sure he started people saying “that’s gas” but Erik claims he may have also started it.
There’s a quote about doing something “briefly” that made me cry.
“Say goodnight, say hello to Lord Stanley” - after CBJ acquired Duchene. At least they finally won a playoff round but I’m going to sleep on them just fine Matt.
22. Summer Girl - HAIM
Kelsey, there probably wasn’t a song on your top playlist that I’d have this high lol - but you still may enjoy this one.
Kelsey is a key piece of all of our friends hangouts - she’s willing to talk to anyone, she’s fun to be around and a good sport when you rip on her for having Calvin de Haan on her fantasy team. Why???
She also said goodbye to her car but she didn’t give it to me for free, which is a shame. Respect women! I hope you don’t hurt your knee again this year. Also, please post another YouTube video, we are begging you.
21. Pretty Please - Allan Rayman
Brooke, you’re still on speed dial for anything Disney but you had a much bigger year than I did. BROOKE GOT ENGAGED! That’s so sweet! YOU GOT YOUR OWN HOUSE! Jesus Christ what didn’t you do?
YOU’RE EVEN IN THE GAZETTE LIKE EVERY WEEK!
While you’re surfing waves in Hawaii, keep thinking of ways to pave the way for everyone else to start adulting, please. You also listen to me rant a lot and our conversations are deep and satisfying, so thank you for that.
Anna, as I’ve referenced in this article plenty, you and I end up talking at basically every party and the topics go all over the map but why not? You seem to have knowledge about everything and you’re a compass for me to figure out where the hell to go next. I respect your opinion a lot. Considering how many dumb things I say or bad jokes I try to pull off, you haven’t had to slap me in the face...yet...
20. Maybe You’re The Reason - The Japanese House
Brian I didn’t pick this song for you because it has Japanese in the artist name, I swear it just happened that way...
Maybe you’re the reason why I randomly get hungry when I check my Instagram though because you post delicious shit all the time.
I thought our lunch at Jack’s was the “last supper” but even though you’ve moved to Cold Lake, you still come back and visit or join hangouts and I think that’s pretty neat.
I hope you haven’t had to...ahem...shoulder a big load with your new job, because it’d definitely fall off. We’ve come a long way already “I Don’t Wanna Know starts playing” OH COME ON CHANGE THE ORDER MAN! May you and your fingernail find luck in 2020.
19. When Am I Gonna Lose You - Local Natives
I hope I don’t lose the Serras as friends although if I kick Mike’s ass in fantasy enough times, he may get frustrated ;)
Not only do Mike and Samantha organize a ton of fun shit for us to do, they’re also high quality human beings. They’re two of the nicest people you’ll ever come across!
Mike also posted last night Snap stories of his entire family getting lit and dancing in the basement, which gives me hope that we’ll be partying long into our old age too. I also usually wave at Sam while saying hi for basically no reason but I didn’t notice it until she pointed it out and it’s funny. I am standing right beside her and still waving like HEY LOOK HERE! Both of them also have a great sense of humor and great laughs. See you guys in 2019, and then again in 2020. Also Mike - love the hat in this photo man.
18. You Had Your Soul With You - The National
Chris probably knows my soul inside out at this point - if you think this is a novel, imagine what Chris has to hear when I stay inside his studio for four hours a day AFTER my work shift is over. Jesus Christ. To be fair, his studio is a party at all hours of the day, everyone goes in there.
Chris is a really nice guy so he drives me home from work often even though he moved into his own place in North Edmonton and I pay him back sometimes in Mercato soda. I always remind him he can ask for more but he doesn’t take it. Chris also went on a big tour with his band Alleviate in a van and it sounds like he may have had scurvy and plague by the end like a Mayflower survivor.
There’s a reason why people just come in droves to Chris’ studio though - he’s hilarious yet can give you a good real honest take if you need one. This guy gets it in a world where many don’t. We also go WAY over the line and lots can’t be posted. I’ll just say the guy knows how to use Photoshop adeptly. Time to pull out the JVC for the holidays and try to survive the grim reaper once again eh?
17. It Doesn’t Matter Why - Silversun Pickups
It doesn’t matter how or why you got there Shaye, it’s that you made it my man! I suspect you’ll continue rising in Toronto and then move to Arizona and then make a quick side trip to Edmonton and pack me in your suitcase.
Shaye does video, social media and graphics for the Toronto Rock in the NLL, which means he gets to travel with the team to new places and apparently also allows him time to win our fantasy football pool while he’s at it.
It doesn’t matter how much shit is thrown on him - Shaye finds a way to swim through it (unless it’s the AquaWall lol). He even visited me in the summer and let me drive his now sold Kia Rio. Well here you go Shaye - plenty of new songs to go through now for the first time, enjoy my friend!
16. In Your Head - Nilufer Yanya
Matt. Matt. Matt. Matt. Matt. Matt. Matt.
Considering I also mentioned you earlier, that’s EIGHT times you greedy dick.
When it comes to hockey knowledge in your head, only Matt Mosewich and I stand above the rest - he probably knows more about me on prospects but don’t tell him that. If you had Matt and I heading a scouting department and working together, we’d dominate the NHL I guarantee.
BRRRRROOOOOOBBBEEERRRGGGG. Dammit.
The Oilers now make Matt sad like they did for me years ago, the belief wavers.
Matt is part of a TV Saskatchewan gang with Kyle, Connor and his GF and Katherine - Matt still lives with Kyle today. Kyle please send me some movie suggestions that are coming of age and not shit....heavy on the NOT SHIT part though. Also Kyle, your IG bio is “power user of the Internet” - explain. Katherine, how was that 8-6 game in Toronto? Looked awesome when Matt and I watched from Hudson’s. Connor, how’s life as Matt’s best friend?
Matt use that Brewhouse coupon wisely, I had to fight a bear like Leo to get that.
15. Giving Up - Whitney
Brenna did the absolute opposite of that this year despite 2019 being a shit-storm 24/7. Anything that could go wrong WENT WRONG for her and she still came out laughing somehow. Her store is always a task, her cars handed multiple problems to her, life gave her pain and made her pay for it - but she kicked her way out of the hole. That’s one of Brenna’s best qualities though - she goes “well shit this is brutal” but then is like “oh well, lets party” - she is strong and fights through it.
Brenna always has something to say, like myself. We do a good job at trading off between who is listening to each other’s bullshit on a given day. If you believe in yin/yang, then 2020 will be Brenna’s best year ever. Let’s hope so for your sake!
14. On The Luna - Foals
It felt like Christi was on the moon because she was so far away most of the year. Czyz now lives in Germany, which is apparently party central.
Speaking of the moon, Christi and I talked almost every day this year at night. I’m a night owl so going to bed is hard and it’s even harder when you have an awesome friend to chat with on the other side of the planet. I feel like I know Germany’s clock by heart now.
Christi somehow is owning it in her profession despite spending so much time listening to my wacky theories and life going-to-shit moments, hell I may be the only thing in her way to stopping an eventual zombie apocalypse someday. She’ll be trying to cure the infection while I’m like “OMG guess what, I hung out with Raphy today and it was fun!” typed over three FB messages AND SHE’LL RESPOND...maybe with a Joker meme!
She’s back for a bit in Canada (ewww right???) and I’m excited to see her again face-to-face. I’m very fortunate to have someone in my life as smart, witty and insightful as Christi Czyz.
13. Giannis - Freddie Gibbs, Anderson .Paak
Drew likes GIANNIS.
Drew will never shut up, he’ll talk until I want to kick the shit out of him and despite that, he calls ME the motor mouth. Brutal.
But I always come back for more because he’s fun to be around and party with. I also enjoy the challenge of debating Skip. At least he lost in fantasy this year in both sports. We’d never hear the end of it.
Jesse Puljujarvi might be a bust Drew, you may be right. If you throw enough shit at the wall, sometimes it sticks!
When the gloves are off and the fight is over, Drew does have my back and I have his. We had plenty of Skype conversations about life and laughed through the problems. He’s the life of the party - every story seems to be about him because the people all want to be with him. Sometimes it’s because you want to see a guy who is in one do the dumbest thing possible and Drew is very good at that. I can already picture the Taylor and Colin eye rolls when Drew opens his mouth. He’s an entertainer alright.
12. NO HALO - Brockhampton
I didn’t play one game of Halo this year, shit!
This may be because I found myself less at Evan’s house this year so we couldn’t witness James on Jackbox putting up a genius answer that is totally G rated.
This is a good thing though because it means Evan was busy and truly going somewhere in life. He’s worked hard at both school and in a few job roles. His boyfriend Minh is a nice, funny dude who has been a cool addition to our game nights. We still mixed in a few breakfasts - the last one in July I think where we also got visited by a very interesting religious group by St. Albert Place. Evan is still a go-to guy for life talks and is probably the most honest person I know. We’ve been through our own personal battles each and came out victorious.
I’m sorry it wasn’t a BTS song Evan, I just can’t get into them! Also, I know you didn’t win last night but STOP WINNING AT CATAN PLEASE! This is Smash Bros all over again, you put me into retirement lol.
11. Have Mercy - YBN Cordae
Christian check out this song, I think you’ll like it.
Christian and I saw Apollo 11 in theaters, debated movies to their core, played Mass Effect at 2 a.m. and smashed Rock Band guitars in the parking lot of Alliance church while the song from the Office Space fax machine scene played in the background.
Hanging with Christian is great because you get a good mix of college hoops talk (North Carolina SUCKS), philosophy, theories, gaming...he’s a well-rounded person and always has something interesting to say or recommend. On top of that, he’s a valuable friend willing to lend his ear to your troubles.
Also, guys guess what? He’s brown! I just learned this!
10. Moderation - Florence + The Machine
Fun fact: Did you know Mitch likes instrumental tracks? Jazz? Rob Thomas? The guy doesn’t only listen to tracks that his bands Valyria or Sunscapes produce. He may moderately like this one if he hears it on CBC Radio.
He did just leave the recording studio for Sunscapes and that track is rumored to be a lock for the 2020 Top 100. Mitch and I also still do drives but it’s harder now because he lives in CALGARY! That’s right - Mitch got into the U of Calgary and now is completing his Master of Planning course. That’s very big time.
Follow him at @mitchdrums on Instagram to get drum solos. I also think he has a very perceptive look at the world and I always enjoy hearing what he has to say. 2020 is a fresh start and a big year for Mr. Stykalo.
9. Living in Lightning - City & Colour
Jordan is the ONE person who will phone you up if he wants to talk to you - hell he phoned me to talk about Mike Smith last weekend while I was exiting my front door on my way to HIS house. He shares a place by the way with Ally’s brother Josh.
Jordan is a very funny guy who finds himself in the weirdest scenarios sometimes and many seem to involve cars - like the story where he likely sold his vehicle to meth dealers. He is the king at getting stuck in random bullshit like he’s living in lightning. His orange truck broke down twice in random places. The Astro Van died in deep BC. When you hang out with Jordan, you don’t know what’ll happen but it’ll always be a good story.
If it’s a party, Jordan always sends it even if there’s consequence the next day. I expect Lindsay and him to get absolutely wrecked in Banff. Jordan is also on the “Jesus Christ Why Oilers” bandwagon with me - we talk a lot about this train wreck of a team. I don’t sense that changing.
8. White Onions - Foals
Kelly and I have been friends now for like, 17 years. That’s incredible when you think about it. It started with a few friendly games of Cops and Robbers and a birthday party at Putters Edge, and now we’re still at OJs discussing Game of Thrones and Star Wars in depth.
The Kings suck ass and so do the Oilers. Dammit. At least you can get your frustrations out through Dead by Daylight.
Thanks Kelly for your patience when I needed it a few times this year - you drove me to parties out of your way and it’s always you who texts me if you notice I’m missing at one. I’m also pretty sure we killed Big Bird.
7. Difficult Love - City & Colour
I think I talked about Alex Matias a ton already in this blog - maybe more than anyone else. We hung out maybe the most of any of my friends - whether it was driving to Rec Room on the Southside or checking out the new reservoir in Erin Ridge after a Tim Hortons run (and Kelly was there for a lot of this too) - you provided me opportunities to get out and add to this list.
We both had challenges this year but we got through them man - I sense some big things coming for you in 2020, whether that’s moving to Toronto or California or going on a sweet vacation or whatever it may be.
Let’s do it again as long as you’re in this town.
6. Rylan - The National
I was messaging Aaron while typing this post and trying to get it done so he can sit his ass by his tree and READ THIS! His last message was “raccoon” and only we will know the context of that.
Aaron and I messaged each other so much this year that there was a day when we didn’t and Flem just went “hey...sorry it was weird we didn’t say anything yet” and I was like “Damn straight son”
Most of our chats would get us on a list somewhere. Followed by a Patrick Star GIF. Wait a second....remember GIF?
Aaron and I at this point are like two old grumpy men. Everything is shit, hell we’ll shit on each other, and neither of us really care. We’ll just go back to messaging each other “poo” and “ass”. Aaron explored Japan this year and also canoed in the rain like a mad man. This man works hard and has a big heart. Fart.
And now for a sensationalized Buzzfeed headline: DOEZ DONALD TRUMP MEANZ LESS BEYOND MEATZ FOR CANCER AIDS? - sigh.
5. Megaton Mile - Local Natives
Amber I meant THESE local natives!
I love chilling out with Amber. She laughs at everything - the good, the bad and the ugly. Our conversations get so off tangent and wild but it always ends up making me smile. Amber had a big year - she graduated and now she’s a software developer and full-time cat mother. She has the CODE to success - get it! Dad jokes!
Amber is a very kind-hearted person and is so easy to talk to. It’s the Winter of Wolinski! It always comes around right before the Summer of....wait....
I still have 1 Mike’s in the fridge right? Save it for me PLEASE!
4. Alligator - Of Monsters and Men
Ronan, Raphy, I noticed we’re using a lot less code words recently - either because we’re maturing or a lot of the stuff we’d hide is now out in the open. No clue, OR maybe it’s just such a normal part of our language now.
There’s still GBT, sitting in it, stinky, Wild Sloth, SATC (you’ll have to ask me what that means), metallic rectangle used for storage - and all of the classics too.
Raphy and I talked so much in his CR-V that we actually made it die. AMA had to come and pick it up at 3am off my street. In Banff, Raphy and I sent it together, locked and loaded.
Ronan is “Marshall” on my phone and on Facebook because I’m Ted Mosby and they’re best friends. We had tons of trips to get food and it takes no effort to make each other laugh. When Ronan starts smiling, I lose it. Also, Bing!
Both guys remain patient as hell with me and they get me. It doesn’t matter what the issue is, they just get it. I’m allowed one F bomb as per PG-13 rules and I’ll use it here.
These guys are the fucking best.
3. Eat, Sleep, Wake (Nothing But You) - Bombay Bicycle Club
I usually reserve this spot for apologies, but I want to flip that around this year.
I want to thank you all for caring enough to read this top 100. I want to thank you for having the patience, kindness and ability to forgive when I’ve wronged you, or been a dick, or overall caused an inconvenience. Without family & friends, I would have nowhere near the life I have today. It’s you that allows me to learn from mistakes and be a better person.
Some of you who are reading and aren’t in it much - I’d love to hang more! There are some people I dearly miss doing things with and talking to, more than they’ll ever know. There are others I’d like to know a lot better. Reach out! I will try to be better with that as well in 2020.
2. Good Luck - Broken Bells
I was thinking the other day on my way to the station - “How lucky am I to have the chance at doing exactly what I wanted to do?”
My parents do everything they can to support my dreams and are there with me every step of the way.
Thanks Mom, Thanks Dad - it’s your guidance, leadership and love that shapes who I am. You are my role models and I’m extremely proud to say that.
Merry Christmas Mom, JD, Lilly!
Merry Christmas Dad, Lorelei and the girls!
1. Borderline - Tame Impala
It’s time to live life a bit more on the edge - we’re on the borderline.
Thanks for reading! Have a spectacular 2020!

@bernuviels-inspiration tagged me to do my top 20 favourite albums. Thank you so much <3
1. Post Traumatic by Mike Shinoda (2018) This album have really helped me to deal with Chester’s passing. Even though I love all of the songs ‘Nothing Makes Sense Anymore’ and ‘Make It Up As I Go’ will always be my favourites.
2. Bury The Lies by Takida (2007) ‘Handlake Village’ always hits me in the feels. I wish the music video was still available to see on YouTube because that music video also always hit me so hard. I have no idea on why it was removed but I know the house in the video was for sale a few years ago (and yes I really wanted to buy it) so maybe that’s why. Never mind, I found the music video with another person’s voice: here. I also really love ‘Snypah’
3. Evanescence by Evanescence (2011) I had to choose their self titled album because of songs such as ‘Lost In Paradise’ and ‘Swimming Home’ I relate to those songs so much more now than I did when the album was released.
4. Dark Passion Play by Nightwish (2007) I saw the music video to ‘Amaranth’ on Tracklistan, a swedish music rating list. For years after, it was known as ‘the video with the angel’ because I completely forgot about the band who did it. It wasn’t until one day in school when someone played it in class that I heard it again. But my favourite song is ‘Cadence of Her Last Breath’
5. A Thousand Suns by Linkin Park (2010) I love this album so much, for that it is a ‘message of hope and love in a world filled with war and hate’
6. One More Light by Linkin Park (2017) Even though it’s hard to listen to the songs, I still find that it helps me. ‘Battle Symphony’ helped me realize it wasn’t my fault that my rabbit Rockstar died.
7. Dark Horse by Nickelback (2008) ‘Gotta Be Somebody’, I heard that song on the radio and the music video is amazing. I have cried so much to that song and it have helped me so much. Some days I can listen to it, most days I can’t. ‘I’d Come For You’ (the music video is about sexual assault) and ‘Never Gonna Be Alone’ (whose music video breaks my heart) will always feel like a hug. I even have the horseshoe on the cover as a tattoo.
8. Curb by Nickelback (1996) Released the day before I was born, either ‘Curb’ or ‘Little Friend’ was the first song I ever heard by Nickelback. I have no idea of where but when I was given the CD, I recognized I had heard those two songs before.
9. Life Starts Now by Three Days Grace (2009) With songs such as ‘Someone Who Cares’, ‘World So Cold’ and ‘Break’, I had to choose this album. The line ‘Everyone's got a place to be but there's no room for me’ in ‘Someone Who Cares’ will always stab me.
10. Dead by April by Dead by April (2009) Even though ‘Losing You’ and ‘Angels of Clariy’ meant a lot for me at the time this album was released, ‘Promise Me’ is my favourite song.
11. Sempiternal by Bring Me The Horizon (2013) ‘And The Snakes Start To Sing’ means alot to me.
12. The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance (2006) ‘Famous Last Words’ have helped me many times.
13. Holding Onto Strings Better Left To Fray by Seether (2011) When I, in May 2012, went to Florida to see Nickelback live, Seether was one of the bands that played first. Of all the three bands (yes three - Bush, Seether and My Darkest Days) that played before Nickelback, Seether became my favourite. I was amazed by the pictures they showed on the TV, pictures of creepy dolls. At the time I saw them in Florida, I thought I had never heard about them before, but when I came back from America, I found ‘Broken’, a song I had in fact heard before. My favourite songs from the album is ‘Pass Slowly’ and ‘Here And Now’
14. Body Talk Pt. 1 by Robyn (2010) My rabbit Tage loved that album. I took him out, had a notebook with me and wrote down how he reacted to different songs. His favourite song, and also mine is ‘Fembot’
15. Silver Moon by Donkeyboy (2012) I first heard ‘City Boy’ in school. I could see the music video over and over again but my favourite song on the album is ‘Darkest Night’
16. American Tragedy by Hollywood Undead (2011) ‘Been To Hell’, ‘Hear Me Now’ and ‘Coming Back Down’ are my favourites from this album. Most days I can only listen to ‘Coming Back Down’ if I listen to ‘New Divide’ by Linkin Park first (they’re placed like that in my playlist)
17. The Killer Angels by Civil War (2013) We always buy a magazine in Sweden called Sweden Rock Magazine and back in 2013, this CD was given for free if you bought the magazine. After five seconds, I was caught in a trance. The singer’s voice is amazing. He is no longer a member in the band though. ‘Rome Is Falling’ is my favourite although ‘Gettysburg’ and ‘I Will Rule The Universe’ (that’s how I named my tumblr) always gives me the chills.
18. Blurryface by Twenty One Pilots (2015) Even though I had heard about Twenty One Pilots before the release of this album, Blurryface opened my eyes, or should I write ears on open wide. My favourite songs is ‘Heavydirtysoul’ and ‘Hometown’
19. Twilight of The Gods by Bathory (1991) I listen to ‘Hammerheart’ on repeat in perhaps 2011/2012. It helped a lot. I find it very hard to listen to Bathory nowadays for reasons unknown to me. And it will be harder now, as my rabbit was named in honor of the singer.
20. The Unforgiving by Within Temptation (2011) ‘Lost’ is in my opinion the best song ever written. It’s so extremely powerful. ‘Stairway To The Skies’, the chorus gives me the chills every time I hear it.
This time I will tag people; feel free to do this if you want to, you don’t have to do it as I did if you don’t want to: @fantajikokoro, @beepppp, @lozzawomble, @youre-my-thoughts-at-3am, @stcktoyourgunsx, @every0ne-dies-alone, @buildyourcastleinthe-sky, @xoblxrryfxce

Valentine’s Day Music Newlsetter 2019!
Welcome to the 13th Music Newsletter! Short intro for the newbies - I love music. I love sharing music with other people. In college I started a "music newsletter" email with some playlists (aka mixtapes) I've made and some song/band recommendations. Why Valentine's Day? Because I think this day should be about love in many ways - including love for music!
That brings us to today. The first Valentine's Day mixtape I put together was actually a physical mix CD that I mailed to my home friends while I was away at college. That was in 2008 (11 years ago!). A lot has changed since then, but my love of music has not. While I feel sometimes too busy or too old or too out of touch to know what I'm even talking about, I hope you'll get some enjoyment out of this - as much as I've been enjoying listening to these songs and picking them for you!
*Click here to download Valentine's Day 2019 mixtape!
Click here to play Valentine's Day 2019 on Spotify!
*Note that the file downloads as a zip file, double clicking on it to open it up should give you the individual songs. Then move the songs to iTunes into a playlist!
1.) "Happy Unhappy" - The Beths New Zealand indie rockers The Beths debut album, Future Me Hates Me, is full of catchy, energetic sad-twinged songs. This song feels like it could have come out back in the 00s when we had to find new music by reading blogs and actually downloading MP3s - it feels closer to the Garden State soundtrack era of indie than the recent moody electronic vibe. It's a lot of fun! Sounds like Courtney Barnett by way of The Wombats, with a splash of Los Campesinos.
2.) “City Looks Pretty” - Courtney Barnett Courtney’s 2018 album “Tell Me How You Really Feel” is only her second studio album, but somehow it feels like she’s been around forever. The album features a “fuller” sound and more production, which may appear dulled next to 2015’s “Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit.” However, I feel excited by Courtney exploring a more mature sound and think it accurately reflects the albums depressive theme. “Sometimes I get mad / it’s not all that bad” is sung with a definite apathy compared to her shout-singing past record. As the bridge settles in, Courtney captures the depression symptom of lack of interest in things you used to enjoy. The city looks pretty when you’ve been stuck inside isolated for two weeks. 3.) “Screwed” - Janelle Monáe feat. Zoë Kravitz Janelle’s 2018 album “Dirty Computer” is an anthology of songs (and truly, poetry) that tell of reckoning with being a queer woman of color in an oppressive, violent society. It’s an incredibly personal album with her fans in mind - “I want young girls, young boys, nonbinary, gay, straight, queer people who are having a hard time dealing with their sexuality, dealing with feeling ostracized or bullied for just being their unique selves, to know that I see you. This album is for you. Be proud.” (Rolling Stone, 2018). My favorite part of this song is “See, everything is sex / except sex / which is power / you know power is just sex / now ask yourself who’s screwing you.”
4.) "BAGDAD - Cap.7: Liturgia" - Rosalía 25-year-old Rosalía Vila Tobella from Catalonia has an excellent 2018 album El Mal Querer. The album combines traditional flamenco with modern R&B. The album is a story of love and heartbreak over the course of 11 chapters/songs. This particular one might sound familiar due to the sampling of Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River."
5.) "Gun" - St. Lucia St. Lucia's first release off of their 2018 album Hyperion caught my attention with its connection to a more traditional rock sound and the heavy-hitting, one-word title. The production and sound almost reminds me of Oasis or U2. Turns out that the album is indeed produced by someone who worked on records with PJ Harvey, Depeche Mode, and U2. In interviews, Jean-Philip Grobler talks about how this song is generally about both gun control and power. "You said you wanted to feel a gun in your hands" in Verse 1 transforms to "You said you wanted to feel the blood in your hands" in Verse 2, highlighting the fact that guns are designed to kill.
6.) “Apathy” - Frankie Cosmos With a catchy bass line, gorgeous lyrics, and endearing vocals, this song and entire album are not to be missed. As you may notice on this year’s playlist, this year I was super into what I would describe as punk-influenced, low-fi indie female vocalists. Pretentious enough for you? Haha. I just mean that there are a ton of young women blowing up in the indie music scene with a huge crossover in sound. As demonstrated in “Apathy,” many of these songs are short, lack a traditional pop music format, use low-fi production, and have a storytelling aspect of almost speak-singing. These elements are all found in traditional punk music, so it’s interesting and exciting to see these artists shaking things up and challenging the punk genre. Frankie Cosmos has a long history of creating music, under various projects using Bandcamp as a teenager. Her 2018 album “Vessel” is nothing short of delightful and another one of my favorites of the year. 7.) “Your Dog” - Soccer Mommy Soccer Mommy is Sophie Allison, singer-songwriter based out of Nashville. She opened for Paramore on their recent tour and she has launched into the indie music scene with a lot of attention in the past couple years. I love how her voice clearly carries so much anger as she sings about an emotionally abusive relationship. Her lyrics describe the agony of small, sweet gestures pushing her back to her ex, despite her wanting desperately to end it. Using the metaphor of being a loyal, sub-servient dog, she describes the way her SO treats her like she’s his property. Because the song lacks a traditional “pop” format (verse 1 / chorus / verse 2 / chorus / bridge / chorus), there is a sense of the story ending unresolved. Fortunately, she has an excellent album (one of my favorites) from 2018 called “Clean” where you can learn more of her story. 8.) “Pristine” by Snail Mail A stunning debut from 19-year-old Lindsey Jordan, “Lush” is a 2018 release not to miss. “Pristine” perfectly encapsulates teenage life and love - “it just feels like the same party every weekend. Doesn’t it?” There is such a sense of genuine hormonal angst that she is almost joyfully celebrating. Her album reads more like a diary - and how lucky she is to have these future memories and be able to approach them with such wisdom.
9.) "Uncomfortably Numb" - American Football feat. Hayley Williams Paying homage to Pink Floyd, legendary emo band American Football joins with Paramore's lead singer Hayley Williams for a devastating track about losing emotional sensation. "I blame my father in my youth / Now as a father, I blame the booze." I couldn't find too much information on the exact inspiration behind the track, but it's the second track released off their upcoming album out March 22nd. Hayley is usually front and center as a singer, and it's interested to hear her take more of a backing role, as well as explore a bit of a lower vocal range than she usually does.
10.) “Geyser” - Mitski Mitski absolutely killed it last year with “Be The Cowboy,” which was consistently rated not only in the top 5 best albums, not only top 3, but making MULTIPLE end of year lists as the number one album of 2018. It’s easy to see why, given the incredible breadth of music she wrote for her album. I see Mitski's influence reflected in the rise of fame in other punk-inspired female vocalists in the indie scene, building off her ability to capture the attention of a wide audience. Which is also very interesting because she incorporated elements of many other genres on this album (spot any disco on “Nobody”?) While it was difficult to pick one song for my playlist, “Geyser” stands out to me as not only an excellent album opener, but a fascinating look into Mitski’s own relationship with the art she creates. In an interview, she explains that this song is about her feeling like she has to create music because she would never be satisfied in life without it, but feeling sometimes stifled, stuck, and resentful when she puts music above basic needs such as her health and self-care. She needs her art to survive but it simultaneously kills her.
11.) “Me & My Dog” - boygenius It’s impossible to pick just one song of this album. Boygenius is the supergroup of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker - who each could also have one of their incredible solo songs on my playlist. Partially because they enjoyed each other’s creative energies and partially as a response to constantly being compared to each other as “women in indie,” the trio came together to create an EP of emo-influenced, folk-inspired gorgeous tracks about grief, loneliness, identity, and heartbreak. This particular song features Phoebe Bridgers in the verses and is a beautiful representation of the embarrassing and frustrating feeling of being in love with an ex. Please check out the individual work of these artists too!
12.) "bless ur heart" - serpentwithfeet Serpentwithfeet, aka Josiah Wise, has a gorgeous, intimate voice throughout his 2018 debut album, soil. This song starts off with a question of how his art will be received by the world. The rest of the song is a tender message of gratitude to his first love. It seems like Josiah questioned the choice to speak about his experiences with his ex in such a public fashion - with complexities of privacy, being open about sexuality, and possible painful memories on the table. Josiah's writing is very much like poetry, and his raw, unfiltered, un-autotuned vocals match the beauty of his words.
13.) "Bury A Friend" - Billie Eilish 17-year-old Billie Eilish is set to release her debut album, When We Sleep, Where Do We Go? next month. This song matches her goth aesthetic with a creepy story from the perspective of the monster under the bed. We learn that the monster is part of Billie herself, who is struggling with her own demons. 14.) "Loading Zones" - Kurt Vile A gorgeous guitar track, Kurt Vile paints a picture of his hometown Philadelphia and feeling on top of the world exploring his city's streets. He included a hilarious marketing strategy of sending fake parking tickets to fans in the mail to promote the song. Kurt Vile talks about the metaphor of "I park for free," which is how he sometimes lives his life - breaking the dumb rules because it's his life, his streets, his town. 15.) "Dylan Thomas" - Better Oblivion Community Center Is it possible to already be nostalgic for the late 2000's? Conor Oberst and Phoebe Bridgers released this surprise collaboration last month and this is the standout track for me. Conor Oberst's incredibly recognizable voice is hard to match in terms of strength, timbre, and uniqueness. While Bridgers is young enough to be from a different generation than him (she also grew up listening to Oberst's music), he saw something in her that resonated with him. I love how they sing in unison on this track (and much of the album) and think their voices sound really good together.
16.) "Butterflies" - Kacey Musgraves Kacey Musgraves is bringing a breath of fresh air to country. After self-releasing three albums, she tried her hand at reality TV through Nashville Star over a decade ago. Golden Hour is her fourth album using a record label, and she just won Album of the Year at the Grammys! Her voice is beautiful and has an earnest, authentic approach in joining elements of country pop.
17.) “Prior Things” - Hop Along “Bark Your Head Off, Dog” is Hop Along’s third album, released in 2018. Singer/songwriter Frances Quinlan has the ability to transform the themes of her songs. Layered with a multitude of different sounds and instruments, it could easily sound scattered and busy, but instead feels like we are huddled around a campfire with an enthusiastic, stream-of-consciousnesses storyteller. “Prior Thing” is the last song on the album and crosses time, space, and memories with the start of a hallucinogenic drug trip. She has the ability to take a phrase and transform the expected - pausing or elongating notes at unexpected places. This method keeps you invested in figuring out what the song is really about or what the conclusion is. 18.) "Kids" - Pup Emo/pop punkers Pup have a new album Morbid Stuff coming out on April 5th. Their songs are made for live shows - shouting/singing alternates, sing-a-long catchy lyrics reminiscent of the Hold Steady, and unison whole-band lines. Pup frontman Stefan Babcock said this song is about finding someone who agrees with your view of the world being a fucked up place, and enjoying small moments of solace in spending time with them.

Spring Playlist 2018
Harry Styles' daily dose of 'Medicine', Panic! At The Disco's every cloud having a 'Silver Lining' and Palaye Royal's an apple a day keeps the 'Mr. Doctor Man' away. Spring has mildly sprung, commencing an new era for Mr Malik with Zayn zoning himself in an epoch separate to his 'Mind Of Mine' moments and One Direction history, signalling the start of something new with the 'Pillowtalk' pioneer posting a powerful, greedy, loyalty yet vengeance film style video ending with a date induced cliffhanger beginning on 04.12.18. With spring shaping up to be a season of sensations coming from Aussie ensemble 5 Seconds of Summer's 'Want You Back' and Brit band Arctic Monkeys 'Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino', as well as some individually curated playlists showcasing a plethora of stellar songs evoked from new releases, attended gigs or simply derived from nostalgic value.
‘Medicine’ – Harry Styles
Styles is feeling super love sick and has therefore been prescribed with a medical medium of music to cure his aggressively hedonistic wants, needs and requirements. Banished in black from his fingers to his toes as Styles shimmered under the stage in Switzerland, a delightful double debut of non-studio songs shone from Harry's low tones yet fitful range as the 'Harry Styles' self titled record rejects 'Anna' and 'Medicine' lavishly launched. Whilst 'Anna' is a sample of moderately melodious riffs compared to the rough and ready specimen of 'Medicine' which explores Styles' sensual side, evoking lyrical content in its wake of a "Tingle running through my bones/The boys and girls are in/I mess around with him/And I'm okay with it" that left fans in a frenzy. With these words demonstrating limitless lyrics and a there's no holding the Styles back approach to his solo songwriting style.
‘Mr. Doctor Man’ – Palaye Royale
Headlining the front cover of Alternative Press magazine, and Payale Royal’s decade long exersion has made them music magnates. From Palaye moulding their personified personalities into true artistic value with meticulously designed merchandise aligning with the bands vivid image and independent appearance, producing products such as the popular Palette Royale as well as their distinct art rock repertoire introducing the triple collective's commencing 2012 single 'Morning Light' to their rated 2015 record 'Boom Boom Room'. 'Mr. Doctor Man' the leading hit that hoisted the Sumerian signed entity into song success upon its release in Spring 16, reveals deathly lyrics, riveting instrumentals and a voice of indisputable distressful tones by potato enthusiast Remington Leith that carries the bands indie glam sound and avant-garde style onto the imminent 'Boom Boom Room' (Side B) anticipated for emancipation next month.
'Silver Lining' - Panic! At The Disco
Struck by a slither of a silver lining and after a rocky road, Panic! At The Disco are finally coming up cherries on top. Revamping Urie's one man band backing with touring musician members Kenneth Harris on the guitar and Dan Pawlovich on the drums, the band hit the big time bagging the instrumentally reputable Nicole Row to fill in the gaping gap of a bassist with upmost pleasantness. Releasing 'Silver Lining' as a single alongside its action packed attached 'Say Amen (Saturday Night' nostalgic religious number and prequel and sequel video its big, bold, brass, marching band style and feel good substance provide a sense of 'Nine In The Afternoon' instrumentals meets 'Death Of A Bachelor' artistic influences to produce a friendship of Beyoncé name dropping, 70's swear word inspired song vocabulary and vocalising his step up as a vocalist, with Brendon Urie's skilful singing by using the analogy of cutting his teeth to end up making a killing with the Panic! At The Disco spiel.
‘Church’ – Fall Out Boy
Whilst not every diehard fan of Fall Out Boy was confessing their love for 'Church', the odd regeneration of rooters were on their knee's worshiping the music work. Despite 'M A N I A' feeling like we were all just sitting in the waiting room for it's delayed Winters date of release, the forth visual instalment to come out of the record brought Montague and Capulet mannered imagery, contexts correlating to religious relations and themes of Gospel sounds, digged up and derived from Island Record's export 'This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race' made a genre resurgence in a current rendition. A choir of voices to vocalise a heavily orotund orientated chorus, overlapping 'Soul Punk' man Stumps prominent singing delivery alongside a verse of tuneful bass hooks and the chiming of brash bells visually represented a kirk's atmosphere and importantly a place of devotion.
‘Nobody Likes The Opening Band’ – I DON’T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME
Local community talent shows, circa mid-1983 and uncovered tapes pre 20th century. I DON'T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME have built a band brand that brandishes a cleaver curated era of evoking 80's sounds, from the duo's supposed failed attempt at success in synth-pop scenes and art-pop areas during the decade of the Pet Shop Boys. with the ensembles efforts being brushed off and brought to life by the internets influence that the first world is welcoming warmingly being backed by a following of fans in their tens of thousands. Marketed as terminated ex Panic! At The Disco's touring bassist Dallon Weekes once and future project pre and post The Brobecks, with Weekes and Seaman's super small selection of songs from the a-ha affiliated 'Take On Me' attributes in 'Modern Day Cain', grandiloquent sounds of 'Choke' and the candidly newfangled 'Nobody Likes The Opening Band'. Singing of the struggles of being a support act at a show, Dallon's deliberately dull tones depict a sensible tale of negative contexts "Come and see the opening band/Now that you've got your tickets and beverages in hand/They look so tired/Sound uninspired/Guitars are secondhand" prevailing with a positive conundrum "But if you lend an ear and give them just one little chance/You may just like the opening band" makes for a song of sincerity and a soul spilling story.
'Nomad' - In Loving Memory
Death and doom metal meets Panic! At The Disco's artwork of rainbow coloured chemicals from 'Too Weird To Live Too Rare To Die'. 'Introspective' track 'Nomad' is a nostalgic brining together of instrumental and vocal pickings from Bring Me The Horizon's 2008 'Chelsea Smile' and Pierce The Veil's 2012 'King for a Day' under In Loving Memory's own umbrella. 2 EP's in and the New York City capacity have established experimental styles, showcased through a stretch of 'Vans Warped Tour' stints following up a headlining tour titled 'Black Sheep Never Sleep'. Yet song 'Normad' is a backed by a band of solid shredding guitars and wholesome words of warm cordial lyrics, heavily highlighted by the voracious voice of Naveed Stone's fearless tones.

The gender pay gap is just as present in Hollywood as it is in less glamorous careers.
According to Forbes, the top 10 highest-paid actresses earn less than 30 cents for ever dollar earned by their male counterparts.
Here are 11 specific examples that highlight the disparity.
Visit INSIDER’s homepage for more.
While many actors certainly lead glamorous lives, TV and movie sets face many of the same challenges as other workplaces, including bias and inequality.
Hollywood’s problem with pay disparity, for example, has received more and more attention over the last few years. The gender pay gap is a systemic, worldwide injustice, and Hollywood is no exception.
According to Forbes, the top 10 highest-paid actresses in 2018 earned less than 30 cents for ever dollar earned by their male counterparts. These actresses brought in a combined salary of $186 million, while the 10 highest-paid men earned $748.5 million.
Here are 11 specific examples of this disparity.
2018’s highest-paid actress, Scarlett Johansson, made $198.5 million less than the highest-paid actor, George Clooney.

According to Forbes, Scarlett Johansson was the highest-earning actress of 2018, having brought in $40.5 million, largely thanks to her role in the MCU.
George Clooney, on the other hand, topped Forbes’ list of highest-earning actors with a $239 million year.
Johansson, whose income was topped only by six male actors, was the only actress who earned as much as the men in the top 10.
Michelle Williams was paid eight times less than Mark Wahlberg for “All the Money in the World” — and 1,500 times less for reshoots.

Mark Wahlberg’s salary for “All the Money in the World” was reportedly $5 million. Michelle Williams’ was $625,000, though the co-stars essentially had equal screen time.
A media firestorm also ignited when it was revealed that Wahlberg demanded $1.5 million for reshoots in the wake of the Kevin Spacey scandal, while Williams was reportedly paid less than $1,000.
After backlash, Wahlberg donated his earnings from the reshoots to the Time’s Up campaign.

Diane Keaton didn’t receive back-end pay for “Something’s Gotta Give,” while Jack Nicholson did.

In her 2011 memoir “Then Again,” Diane Keaton revealed that she didn’t get any back-end pay for “Something’s Gotta Give,” meaning she wasn’t paid any percentage of the movie’s profits after receiving her initial salary.
Her co-star, Jack Nicholson, did – and he had a smaller role in the 2003 comedy.
Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence received 2% less than their male “American Hustle” costars.

The Sony Pictures email hack in 2014 revealed the back-end pay grade for the stars of “American Hustle.” And despite sharing the same amount of screen time, Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams were paid 7% of the movie’s profits, while Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, and Jeremy Renner each received 9%.
Adams later said she knew about the disparity, but didn’t want to complain.
Lawrence, on the other hand, didn’t know – and given that she had already rocketed to fame as a star of both “The Hunger Games” and “X-Men,” her lack of compensation is even more shocking.
“When the Sony hack happened and I found out how much less I was being paid than the lucky people with dicks, I didn’t get mad at Sony. I got mad at myself,” Lawrence later wrote in an open letter. “I failed as a negotiator because I gave up early. I didn’t want to keep fighting over millions of dollars that, frankly, due to two franchises, I don’t need.”
Jessica Chastain was paid about $1.75 million for “The Martian,” while Matt Damon reportedly earned as much as $25 million.

Jessica Chastain told Huffpost that she made less than a quarter of her widely reported salary for “The Martian.”
“And so people are already saying, ‘Well, she’s making a lot less than her male co-stars because she’s making this.’ I made less than a quarter of that in reality, so there is a huge wage gap in the industry,” she said.
According to The Playlist, that puts her actual salary at approximately $1.75 million.
Chastain’s c-ostar Matt Damon reportedly made anywhere from $15 to $25 million – a pay discrepancy that doesn’t match their screen time discrepancy.
Gillian Anderson was offered “half” of what her co-star, David Duchovny, was offered to return to “The X-Files.”

Anderson told the Hollywood Reporter that “as usual,” she was offered half of Duchovny’s salary for the “X-Files” revival.
According to industry sources, Anderson eventually was paid the same amount as Duchovny for the six-episode run – but considering she fought for equal pay during the show’s initial run, Anderson was hardly pleased she had to renegotiate at all.
“People have said to me, ‘I can’t believe that happened, how did you feel about it, that is insane,’” she told Vanity Fair, referring to the initial equal pay dispute. “And my response always was, ‘That was then, this is now.’ And then it happened again! I don’t even know what to say about it.”
Charlize Theron was offered far less than Chris Hemsworth to return for the “Snow White and the Huntsman” sequel.

Charlize Theron, who stars as the evil Queen Ravenna in “Snow White and The Huntsman,” was offered significantly less than Chris Hemsworth (the Huntsman) to return for the film’s sequel.
She managed renegotiate her salary to match Hemsworth’s.
“I have to give them credit because once I asked, they said yes,” she told Elle. “They did not fight it. And maybe that’s the message: That we just need to put our foot down. This is a good time for us to bring this to a place of fairness, and girls need to know that being a feminist is a good thing. It doesn’t mean that you hate men. It means equal rights. If you’re doing the same job, you should be compensated and treated in the same way.”
Amanda Seyfried has received just 10% of what her male co-star was paid.

Screen Gems
In a 2015 interview with The Sunday Times, Amanda Seyfried revealed that she had been paid just 10% of the salary of her male co-star for a big-budget movie. She clarified that she and her co-star were “even in status.”
Seyfried typically stars in rom-coms, which means she nearly always has equal screen time as her male counterparts – and sometimes more.
Fans believe she was referring to either 2010’s “Dear John,” with Channing Tatum, or 2011’s “In Time,” with Justin Timberlake.
Claire Foy was paid less than Matt Smith for their roles on “The Crown,” as Queen Elizabeth II and the queen’s husband, respectively.

Producers of Netflix’s hit show “The Crown” infamously confirmed that Claire Foy, who played the titular queen, was paid less than Matt Smith, who played Queen Elizabeth II’s husband Prince Philip on the show’s first two seasons.

The producers later apologized to both actors, and Smith spoke out in support of equal pay.
“I’m not surprised that people saw [the report] and went, ‘Oh, that’s a bit odd,’” Foy told Entertainment Weekly. “But I know that Matt feels the same that I do, that it’s odd to find yourself at the center [of a story] that you didn’t particularly ask for.”
Ashton Kutcher was paid three times more than Natalie Portman for “No Strings Attached.”

Paramount Pictures
In a 2017 interview with Marie Claire, Natalie Portman revealed that she was paid just a fraction of Ashton Kutcher’s salary for their rom-com “No Strings Attached,” in which they both play lead roles and share a majority of scenes.
“I knew and I went along with it because there’s this thing with ‘quotes’ in Hollywood,” she explained. “His [quote] was three times higher than mine so they said he should get three times more. I wasn’t as pissed as I should have been. I mean, we get paid a lot, so it’s hard to complain, but the disparity is crazy.”
“Compared to men, in most professions, women make 80 cents to the dollar,” she continued. “In Hollywood, we are making 30 cents to the dollar.”
Ellen Pompeo, the titular role on “Grey’s Anatomy,” was paid less than Patrick Dempsey, who played her love interest.

ABC
Though Ellen Pompeo is now one of the highest-earning actors on TV, thanks to a renewed “Grey’s Anatomy” contract in late 2017, she was once paid less than her co-star Patrick Dempsey – on a show named after her character.
“At one point, I asked for $5,000 more than him just on principle, because the show is ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and I’m Meredith Grey. They wouldn’t give it to me,” Pompeo told The Hollywood Reporter.
“And I could have walked away, so why didn’t I? It’s my show; I’m the No. 1,” she continued. “I’m sure I felt what a lot of these other actresses feel: Why should I walk away from a great part because of a guy? You feel conflicted but then you figure, ‘I’m not going to let a guy drive me out of my own house.’”

playlist tag
rules: we’re snooping in your playlist. put your entire music library on shuffle and list the first ten songs (including music only stuff like OSTs as well as songs) and then choose 10 victims.
thank you for the tag, @cortue 💞 i always have fun with these, especially when it’s about music. i am tagging @vishcount, @sassyassassy, @intyalote, @the-cloud-whisperer. no pressure, but i am very eager for music recs and new music in general!
i used shuffle on my entire music folder on my computer, which contains a lot of music from my teenage years but only a tiny fraction of what i listened to during the last four years. i apologise that half of the songs are Three Days Grace because i was obsessed during highschool and i have all of their CDs. let’s go down this nostalgia trip, shall we
Belize - 24/7
this is one of the few songs on this adventure that i have added in recent years. when i first discovered it in 2018 i was obsessed and i still am? a friend of mine from italy gave me the best recommendations for italian indie and belize is definitely one of my faves.
Three Days Grace - Gone Forever
here we go. this is one of many songs that will make it up here, oh boy. i remember my first two years of highschool being absolutely obsessed with 3dg. i discovered them through some AMVs and from there it was downhill. i remember seeing them live on some festival in 2015 and i cried my fucking eyes out (even when they already had the new frontman at that time which i was a little bit sad about). to this day i like to wear my bandshirt that i got there. definitely one of my most intense concert experiences, damn
Three Days Grace - Last To Know
oh boy, this truly brings up memories. i think this was the first album i bought as a physical copy and this song always hit especially hard? i haven’t listened to this in more than six years and i still can sing along to the lyrics, what the hell. it’s funny how this was such a huge part of my highschool years and now i’ve basically forgotten about their music.
Metallica - Don’t Tread On Me
more highschool nostalgia for me. i think as for many, metallica was my gateway to metal and punk music and anything else that fits under the rock category. it’s just a solid classic i guess? this isn’t one of my top songs, but i am still happy hearing it after such a long time.
Three Days Grace - Time That Remains
i don’t wanna say that Transit Of Venus was my favourite album, but it sort of was? i remember getting the CD of christmas 2012 and a few days later meeting my soon to be first girlfriend? so this album in particular holds these memories of my first love and first heartbreak. maybe that is how i fell out with 3dg, that i was unable to listen to them for a while after that. it’s just very personal and sometimes those memories are more intense than the music i associate with it. either way, i am fond of that christmas because i was so over moon about this album.
SHINee - All Day All Night
wow, i have a very emotional response to this song. when they released this song in early 2018 everything still felt so raw, after Jonghyun left us. i remember crying over these mini albums a lot but also appreciating that they still sound so....shinee? this song is just so catchy and i loved how bubbly it sounds? i always imagined some funky underwater world with these sounds in my ears. but yes, this too lowkey makes me want to cry.
Queen - I’m Going Slightly Mad
of course, queen has to be here, because they will never leave me. this song is so delicious somehow, especially when i listen to it on headphones, where i can hear all the tiny sounds and instruments. gosh, rewatching this MV reminds me how much love i have for them
Three Days Grace - It’s All Over
if i had to list my top 5 3dg songs back then, am pretty sure this would be amongst them. honestly it’s still such a banger and i might just add this to one of my recent playlists. i think One-X overall is a very solid album and has so many iconic songs. during highschool when everything sucked this song felt so cathartic and i will be unapologetic about it. this was my emotional support rock band, i am grateful.
Aaron Lewis - Tangled up
honestly, i have no fucking idea where i found this? i was probably like....13 or something lol. i suspect i might have found it on some Ouran Highschool Host Club AMV, but i am not entirely sure. i remember listening to this alot and writing my first fanfictions in my head (and on my crappy phone sometimes). i still like how the chorus sounds tbh
민수(Minsu) - 섬(Islet)
i discovered this song some three years ago or something and it’s still so sweet. it has these calm summer vibes that soothe my anxiety and the mv is so pretty? quality chill time, which is sort of funny after all these 3dg songs.
well, it was fun discovering what songs i have on my computer! honestly, most of my music is on youtube nowadays, but it was still interesting and makes me very fond. thanks again for the tag!
#it's tragic how it's literally just 3dg#i stopped putting music on my computer a while ago#unless i get new cds#most recent would be my bts and epik high albums#ah and that untamed OST!#thanks vishie for that again <3#but yes this was funny to discover#tag game#personal#music
