Sighswoon began in the summer of 2016, Abrao tells Mashable over email. "It was a mini poem I made up and attached meaning to, and sharing it like that was a reason to run around and be bad. Character design

Good characters have a strong visual identity. Matt Groening’s Simpson’s characters are probably the most iconic, recognised all over the world. Each character is easily identifiable as a silhouette figure due to their unique characteristics, even down to just the top half of their head. Obviously when all placed together in a group this makes it easier but even when they are presented alone they are still easy to identify. 

Characters in a story/comic should be consistent in style, even though they may be completely different characters in terms of physical and psychological attributes.

“Style” can be achieved through stroke weight, defining shapes (head, limbs, hands, feet), the particular curvature of your lines, shades of colours etc. For example, all of your characters might use a square as the basis of their head, are four heads in height and have arms 2/3 the length of their body. 

Once you’ve developed a solid drawing style this consistency comes quite naturally. Some well known artist’s work can be recognised through a simple line on a page!

Depicting the personality of a character in your story/comic comes down to many factors, not only how they look but how they talk (speech bubbles), think to themselves (thought bubbles) and interact with others (body language).

Using a list of physical traits that match up to personality traits will help you develop a successful character. 

Spongebob Squarepants characters are said to be based around the seven deadly sins, Spongebob being Lust, Squidward: Wrath, Mr Krabs: Greed, Patrick: Sloth, Plankton: Envy etc. 

Stephen Hillengurg has also used colours to help identify the personality of each character. Squidward is a sickly blue/green colour because he is always depressed while on the other hand Spongebob is bright yellow because he’s always happy. I also noticed that everything on Squidward’s face droops downwards (his mouth and nose) whilst Spongebob’s nose is a similar shape but turns upwards.  

There are certain rules when it comes to character design, although don’t be afraid to challenge those rules and play around with different physical attributes/personality combinations to create a really complex character. 

Eduardo, a main character on the show “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends” is the stereotypical scary kid’s cartoon monster, he’s big, has huge horns, an angry monobrow, spiky teeth and wears a skull on his belt, although he is actually a very anxious, frightened character. 

Reading a comic

There’s a somewhat universal understanding on how to read [Western] comics, you start at the top left hand side of the page and read down and across through the panels. 

Obviously you can’t hear sound when you read so comic artists have come up with all sorts of ways to portray sound through shapes/colour/typography. 

Font choice is the easiest way to achieve particular ‘sounds’

Some comic artists use their own methods of story telling which sometimes break the rules on how you should read a comic, for example some panels in “The Adventures of Tin Tin” are intended to be read backwards (start on the right side of the page) which gives that sense that something isn’t right, or something is about to happen. 

Typed or handwritten? Handwritten comics feel more personal which most people appreciate because they can feel the artist coming through in their art. Although in some cases it might be appropriate to use a certain computer generated font, for example the character could speak in a robot voice so you would use a font suited to that trait. 

Inspirational artists Pendleton Ward: creator of my favourite cartoon “Adventure Time” and his new show “Bravest Warriors” uses a very particular style/set of guidelines in his characters. They are described to have “spaghetti” arms and legs, round faces, every line is curved/fluid, mouths are placed between their eyes and there’s no need for a nose. Personally I love drawing characters in this way too! They’re very cute and simple but sometimes Pendleton will add crazy details to their faces when zoomed in which I think is hilarious. 

John McNaught: extremely beautiful comics, each panel is like a work of art but put together they look even more aesthetically pleasing. They don’t use much words but when words are required they are very soft and fit nicely with the drawings, like they are part of the artwork not just slapped on afterwards. Michael Deforge: comics and illustrations are absolutely insane, in the best ways possible! Most of the ‘characters’ in his drawings aren’t really based on real humans or animals, they are concoctions of the mind, sorts of things you’d see in your dreams (or on an acid trip).
