Adult satire/thriller criticizing the wedding industry
When Robin, a lesbian academic who's skeptical of marriage as an institution, is asked to be the maid of honor for her childhood best friend, Ellie, she reluctantly accepts based on nostalgia for their friendship and a desire to do research for her thesis on the marriage frenzy sweeping the country
As the wedding approaches, a series of ominous accidents lead Robin to suspect that someone in the wedding party has it out for her–maybe even Ellie herself
Lesbian main character; Filipina lesbian love interest; Black, gay side character
#lol i did not like this at all#picked this up on a whim after searching 'lesbian' in a library catalogue which was perhaps a mistake#it's a quick read and the first sentence is very compelling but i just found it kind of overwrought and annoying#like the near-future stuff didn't seem necessary to me#also the main character's arc of being like 'oh i was Just As Bad As Ellie' didn't make sense to me#like the portrayal of liberal academics felt like satire in a BAD way maybe#very like ˜rabid feminist˜#i feel like it portrayed robin being upset at bigots as being as bad as being bigoted???#which is a very strange message???#so yeah did not like this lol#so happy for you#celia laskey#books#2023 reads#lulu speaks#lulu reads#lulu reads so happy for you
