im so silly /neg for this but i genuinely feel like crying when i think about a minecraft realms i was a part of that got shut down. it was terminated with zero notice or warning bc the map/filesize got too big and the hoster couldnt afford to keep hosting it. all the netherite tools i bought from my friends who grinded for them, the poisonous potato shrine we had built and the ~fifteen-page bible i had written entirely in-game and in latin, the in-game book of prayers, my chicken farm that made a full chest of eggs in a single minecraft day, the museum of rare items everyone in the town collected, the mob head collection, all the houses everyone built, the village one friend built from scratch, my fucking HOUSE i had JUST FINISHED and was in LOVE with man. all gone with no way to see. never got a world download (there was a legit reason we couldnt but i cant remember why). hardly any screenshots/videos because, while some of us did record, most recordings were from at least a week before the shutdown (and everyone was actively playing and building in that timeframe, including my beautiful darling house i built from scratch with no guide I AM NOT A BUILDER AND IT WAS BEAUTIFUL.). a whole discord channel of cool coordinates made obsolete. the world seed was never documented so i cant even see the empty world again. i never play/build/progress on servers and this is why, i feel so sorrowful over it and its a fucking MINECRAFT WORLD. god damn

I take my nikon d7100 with me wherever I go and usually a couple older film cameras too, so i accumulate alot of photos & videos. portraits, nature stuff (especially bugs), and random stuff

if i wanna glitch it, i generally use photoshop to change the format to something spicy and mosh it with HxD. That program works for video files too. Just replace random chunks of the code or paste in gibberish nothing fancy haha.

for fancy compositing/vfx/animation stuff i use after effects. i like to mess with the colors quite alot. when the mood hits , coffee + audiobooks , dump my recent DSLR or phone footage into AE and play with it, and make little snippets (usually just 1 second long). These are exported as quicktime MOV files into a big folder. luckily i got a custom batch conversion script made by a genius that uses ImageMagick + gifsicle + ffmpeg to process the MOVs into tumblr-sized GIFs . Before I had that, i used to convert them all manually with tons of tweaking to preserve as much quality as possible within tumblr's filesize limitation.

for VHS stuff its alot more annoying. finding a VHS camera in 2014 was the main reason i started posting stuff online haha. i got a General Electric 9-9806 and some others. the ancient proprietary batteries are impossible ($$$) to replace so it's a huge hassle to shoot VHS or even VHS-C out in the wild. for ease and improved control, i shoot digitally and convert to VHS with a magical system. i made a diagram today so u can see

hopefully that makes sense haha, so u can turn any digital video into VHS and then digitize it. everything's quite cheap besides the computer.

it's alot of fun to combine all this stuff, adding VFX and glitches to nice footage and running it through a VCR. but also , sometimes plain video/photo is also nice . i try not to smack too much crap on for the sake of it; ultimately the camerawork should speak for itself [though i am def guilty of making lots of lazy images haha cause i feel pressured to post here as much as possible. hopefully when i'm trying my best u guys can tell haha]

I think Felix would be confused to hear that Adrien is already involved with her, maybe even questioning why a “bold, strong girl like Kagami” would be interested in Adrien. He might also insist that it’s Kagami’s choice and he’s not exactly going to “give up.” Not that he’d pursue Kagami aggressively, but just that he’d hang out with her in “totally friendly” manners.

Bonus if Kagami catches on very quickly and Felix rolls with it and insists that he’s worthy of her, which leads to Kagami going on a bunch of dates with him to prove otherwise. Adrien is lowkey panicking that he’s going to lose Kagami to Felix when Kagami returns, super casually, and tells him that he had nothing to worry about and that’s why she so confidently went on all those dates (or I guess there could be an alternate Feligami ending for people too).

I admittedly have never heard of the Mid-Autumn Festival before this ask, so it’s hard to say because I haven’t experienced it.

It would be acceptable in a young person’s fanfiction but not in an actual TV show. I’m fine with flirting but there has to be a limit (Astruc said once I think that it’s something Chat has to work through - don’t recall if it was the flirting or how it disrupted battle - and I’m 65% sure that Kagami exists just to pull Adrien out of his Ladybug crush just enough to where he doesn’t get distracted so the writers don’t have to put focus into teaching him a lesson).

That’s one quote I don’t remember and also is one I do not have on hand so that I can conveniently roast Astruc for it.

“Recommend” is a hard word. I don’t really “recommend” things to people unless I know them on a personal level. I just say what I like and let people go from there.

The other thing is that, with shows at least, I do this thing I call “clipcutting,” which is basically taking out most/all of the aspects of a show that I hate (yes, I am that petty) so I can just have one product where I can watch without the garbage (”garbage” being a broad-ish term; sometimes it’s just “this part is meh and I can live without it”).

For example:

(For reference, average episodes are about 20-22 minutes, I considered “Origins” enough to be its own clipcut, and Part 1 of Season 1 would be a little less than double its length without me clipcutting it. And before anyone asks, the filesize for “Desperada” is so big because I didn’t have the logoless version yet and encoding is a hassle on my computer so I wanted to save it; these pictures are old but get the point across.)

So my views on some shows might be flavored slightly because I watch them without the stuff I deem to be “garbage.” For example, I watched Inuyaha back in the day, but I also gave a big “no” to Miroku’s flirting and a lot of the love drama (also basically any time Kagome went back to the modern era because I get second-hand embarrassment).

Note that none of my “libraries” are that big just because I like to keep my interests small.

Shows (anime): Bloom Into You (I don’t recommend this unless Season 2 gets and I also haven’t read the manga just in case it does so I don’t know how the full story ends), Given, Cells at Work, and Asegao to Kase-san (clipcutted to remove the PG-13 bits so I can just have cute lesbian fluff)

Shows (live-action): Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction (I adore campiness and this show is full of it) and Good Eats (because food science)

Movies: Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs (I got an ask about this one and I’d very much like to gush about it but my keyboard is on the fritz; even answering basic asks like these can be tedious) and Beauty and the Beast (the 2014 French movie and also the original Disney movie)

Games: PIKMIIIIIN (I adore this series so much), the original Spyro trilogy (I never played the remastered version), The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Slime Rancher, and a few games in the Sonic series (Unleashed is my favorite and I will die on that hill); there are also “smaller” games that I don’t really count (like Diner Dash and the Azada series).

I presume there’s no connection. Might just be “this sounds like this other language’s word by coincidence.”

Probably not. I watched the Japanese dub and both it and the English dub are so different that I feel awkward talking about one and not the other (which I haven’t seen).

I will say though that I watched the Clear Card Arc and I hate it with a burning passion. It’s basically like--all the tropes from the original that I didn’t like, rehashed, then slapped on with even more keeping Sakura in the dark. That whole thing made me outright dislike a bunch of characters (Syaoran, Touya, why did you betray me) and it wastes so much time with characters implying but not saying and also having an entire episode based on telling a story about a fox who wants to buy gloves (which I imagine is some metaphor for something but it’s a BORING metaphor).

Oh, and taking time out of an episode to talk about cheesecake. That too. Can we please not?

I never watched it and wasn’t interested enough to. I also heard about all the relationship drama between Adora and Catra and I’m just--no, please, I’m too tired for this.

In most of Africa, the most popular app by far is WhatsApp, and unofficial WhatsApp mods – including one that started life as a Syrian alternative at the height of its civil war – are offering local tools for local contexts.

"Nothing about us without us" has been a rallying cry for many movements, most recently the disability rights movement. Coders working for a Silicon Valley Big Tech firm shouldn't have the last work on how apps work for people half a world away.

The big WhatsApp mods accommodate lots of local needs: larger groups and filesizes, better privacy protection, multiple accounts on a single device.

But it's also hard to find reliable mods, because FB used legal threats to shut down the largest, most popular one.

Ironically, this has driven peer-to-peer app sharing, where people you trust will directly send the app from their phone to yours, assuring you that they haven't detected any spyware. That's just great.

What would be even better is if local coders could dismantle FB's digital colonialism and market their improved apps directly, come out of the shadows without fear of retaliation by distant juggernauts who want to capture "the next billion users" and own their digital lives.

The history of Adversarial Interoperability is full of users modifying their tools to improve them. Before John Deere was a monopolistic copyright troll, it used to send engineers out to farms to collect and integrate farmers' mods into its products.

Imagineering in a Box is a joint project from Khan Academy, Pixar and Disney Imagineering. It's a series of interactive lessons and lectures on designing themed spaces, rides to go in those spaces, and animatronics to go in those rides.

It's interdisciplinary: land design is meant to be undertaken with physical materials, ride design uses art and math, and animatronic design is robotics – mechanical engineering and software development.

Data is the New Toxic Waste (permalink)

In a new article for Kaspersky, I argue that data was never "the new oil" – instead, it was always the new toxic waste: "pluripotent, immortal – and impossible to contain."

Data breaches are inevitable (any data you collect will probably leak; any data you retain will definitely leak) and cumulative (your company's data breach can be combined with each subsequent attack to revictimize your customers). Identity thieves benefit enormously from cheap storage, and they collect, store and recombine every scrap of leaked data. Merging multiple data sets allows for reidentification of "anonymized" data, and it's impossible to predict which sets will leak in the future.

These nondeterministic harms have so far protected data-collectors from liability, but that can't last. Toxic waste also has nondeterministic harms (we never know which bit of effluent will kill which person), but we still punish firms that leak it.

Waiting until the laws change to purge your data is a bad bet – by then, it may be too late. All the data your company collects and retains represents an unquantifiable, potentially unlimited source of downstream liability.

What's more, you probably aren't doing anything useful with it. The companies that make the most grandiose claims about data analytics are either selling analytics or data (or both). These claims are sales literature, not peer-reviewed citations to empirical research.

Data is cheap to collect and store – if you don't have to pay for the chaos it sows when it leaks. And some day, we will make data-hoarders pay.

How to structure a fair covid bailout (permalink)

It's a foregone conclusions that there will be a bailout. My first worry is that it will be inflationary, because production has ground to a halt. More dollars chasing fewer goods — not good.

But there's another risk, which is that it will just go to the finance sector, who will use it to buy private jets and political influence, repeating the 2008 pattern.

Financialization is how the economy got so fragile in the first place. Leveraged buyouts, debt-loading, payoffs for layoffs, looting corporate cash reserves, selling assets and spiking executive competition made companies brittle. As Matt Stoller writes, financialization's goal "is to eliminate production in favor of scalable profitable things like brands, patents, and tax loopholes, because producers – engineers, artists, workers – are cost centers."

Bush/Obama had huge leverage over corporations during their bailout, but they squandered it by making companies subservient to finance, instead of public priorities, workers' rights, or a fair deal for customers.

We must not repeat that blunder. Any company that gets a covid bailout should:

be permanently banned from buybacks, and banned from dividends for 5 years. Companies need to restore their financial cushions.

have their share price zeroed. Shareholders aren't getting a bailout. They "took the risk and upside, they should get the downside too."

have limits on executive comp. Tax dollars shouldn't make execs who presided over failure into millionaires.

a ban on lobbying, limits on PR – you can't spend public handouts to lobby for more public handouts

no M&A activity for 5 years. We're bailing you out so you can run a productive business, not become an acquisition target.

This crisis is different than 2008. It's worse. Let's not make the response worse, as well.

Fox News is a suicide cult (permalink)

Throughout the crisis, Fox News has been dutifully fulfilling its role as a state new organ for the Trump admin. When Trump's narrative was "no big deal," the network engaged in denial and urged its viewers to engage in high-risk conduct to perform their tribal loyalty.

TV news viewers are much older than the median American. Fox viewers are much older than the median TV new viewer. Old people are at the highest risk of covid complications. Linear increases in patient age yield exponential increases in mortality.

Fox has since changed its orthodoxy to match the president's new narrative. But it's too late. Many viewers will cling to their original denial in order to protect themselves from feeling like dupes.

Fox didn't cause the pandemic, and its viewers aren't solely responsible for its spread. But their ideology and conduct made it much, much worse.

If you – like me – have been worried about empty US grocery shelves, it appears that you can rest easy (or easier).

US food distributors' warehouses are at 200-500% nominal, comparable to pre-Thanksgiving.

Food production is also still very healthy.
