They got no idea about me and you (Bruno Bangnyfe x reader)

note: This one was inspired by Taylor Swift’s song “Dress”. Happy 3rd birthday, reputation!

The annual Wing Bind Ball was here and Bruno still hated it with every inch of his body. Even if it wasn’t the boring, old-fashioned ball it used to be, people were still trying way too hard to be on their best behavior. Weren’t they there to have fun? Be this serious on the job, not at a party.

But this year’s event was different for two reasons. Next year’s ball would be organized by the Inks therefore he had to officially pick up the baton and promise to throw the best party even blah blah blah… And the more important reason was you. As the deputy director of the Billionaires you were in charge of the event which meant you couldn’t just sneak off to spend time together. You both had responsibilities and general priorities that night.

Also, no one knew you were together. This certainly made things a lot more complicated. And interesting. And maybe a little more exciting. Would you be able to interact without people finding out the truth? Could you even find an opportunity to do so?

The thing is, it wasn’t easy to find you alone since everybody wanted to talk to you about the event. When he had followed the protocol and congratulated Harry for the success of the party, he casually pointed out that you did most of the work and so people should bother you instead of him. No wonder every guest wanted a piece of you. Letting out a sigh, Bruno pulled his phone out of his pocket and began to type a message in the encrypted app you used for written communication.

Bruno: I’d like to congratulate in person. It’s strictly professional, of course. Harry told me you’re the brain and heart behind this.

Y/N: Then why don’t you come over here now?

With a wolfish smile he looked up from the screen and searched the room to find you. When your eyes locked, he could immediately tell you felt the same way he did. Keeping this safe distance and acting like there was nothing between you two was the worst thing he had to endure lately. He wanted to pull you close and kiss you and be affectionate but he couldn’t do it. You weren’t alone which would surely make this encounter even worse. Did he want that? Did you want that?

Bruno: I don’t like to share.

Bruno: Also, I don’t think we should be alone in a room full of people because I’m not sure I could behave.

At first you only smiled at him, but then you rolled your eyes.

Y/N: I can’t recall the last time you could behave.

Bruno: Ouch.

Y/N: But it’s true and you know it.

Bruno: Yeah, but still, you shouldn’t say it.

Y/N: You said it would be strictly professional. Come on, I don’t bite.

Bruno: Not in public 😏

Y/N: Hey!

He screwed up with that last one. Not because you got mad but because now his mind couldn’t stop playing reruns of the times you had playfully bit him in the bedroom. The two of you made a great team and he wished you could make your relationship official. But telling HR about it would come with a lot of paperwork and neither of you wanted to deal with bureaucracy. Normally, he preferred to follow the rules, but this time he simply didn’t feel like filling out a bunch of stupid forms.

Before he knew it, Bruno was surrounded by fellow members of the Inks and he had no choice but to focus on that conversation instead of you. He felt his phone buzzing in his pocket over and over again, probably because you were bombing him with messages that he couldn’t check right away. He had to try and stay patient, even if it wasn’t as easy as it sounded. His body wanted to act on its own, reaching for the device the moment he didn’t focus on self-control, so it took a lot of effort not do it.

It was only a painfully slowly passing hour later when he could finally get away from people long enough to check his messages. There were quite a lot of them along with a few missed calls from you. But calls? Why would you call him? You had previously agreed not to do that to avoid suspicion.

Y/N: I have a surprise.

Y/N: Don’t you want to know what it is?

Y/N: Bruno, don’t ignore me, please!

Y/N:

Y/N: Please, answer your phone, it’s important!

Y/N: You know I wouldn’t call you if it wasn’t.

Y/N: Fine: Harry can’t stay until the end of the party so I’ll be the one on stage with you!

Y/N: Because of this change ‘sadly’ we have to discuss the choreography of the whole thing.

Y/N: And when I say discuss it…

Bruno didn’t believe it at first, and he couldn’t decide if Harry really had to leave this early or if you just somehow managed to convinced him. Either way, he liked it. No, he loved it. He really loved the idea of finally spending some time alone with you.

Bruno: How about the meeting room on the top floor? They said we can use it.

Bruno: Hello, Y/N! So do you wanna meet?

Bruno: I can bully you as well, you know.

Bruno:

Y/N: Sorry, Harry wants to talk to me about something before he leaves.

Y/N: We’ll meet on stage soon!

Y/N: PS: I love you 🧡😙

He watched the screen for a while but apparently you hadn’t even seen the message yet. So much for his plan to kiss you before leaving. Or to do so much more in that meeting room where an employee would have temporarily turned off the security cameras. Harry isn’t the type to respect the meetings of the Top of Horns and now Bruno knew that apparently, he was also the master of cockblocking.

But at least this gave him a little time to think. He hated this. He truly hated that the two of you had to hide all the time. Maybe he should bother with that stupid paperwork after all. And then he suddenly realized that being on that stage together in front of all those Wing Bind employees actually gave him the chance to prove you he was serious about this relationship.

Later, just before he was about to join you on stage, Bruno took a deep breath. This was for the best. He had to do it. So he walked up the small stairs, briefly waving at the crowd then stopping next to you in front of a microphone. You were talking but he couldn’t focus on the words. He was losing his patience. He couldn’t stand the idea of standing so close to you any longer without doing anything.

“Oh, fuck it,” he said quietly before putting a hand on the back of your neck and pulling you close for a kiss. Not a simple little peck on the lips. No. It was the kind of passionate kiss he desperately needed after pining after you all evening. When he pulled away with a wide grin on his lips, he noticed how confused you looked. You clearly enjoyed it and didn’t even try to stop him but it was surely unexpected. Clearing his throat, Bruno turned back to the crowd. “Okay, okay, you can stop murmuring. Yes, we’re together. Yes, I love her. Yes, I’ll do the paperwork on Monday,” he added, looking at the head of HR. “We hope you had fun tonight, see you next year and so on. Bye!”

The thrilling adventures of a PA - Chapter One: A new job for a new life (Adam Sackler x Reader)

As you ented through the gates of the studio, you can't help but feel your stomach churn a bit, a mix of fear and excitment. It's your fist day as a personal assistant (or PA as you've been told), the new job that you scored unexpectedly after one of your regular at the coffee place you worked before offered you the sport. He did brush you a quick description of what it would entail and well, since you hated working there, you said to yourself 'why not'. It couldn't be worse than dealing with hipsters and grumpy karens all day long, day after day for a risible pay. Plus, you'd probably end up travelling outside of the Big City, which is one of your oldest dreams since you could recall (you never had the money to act upon it, obviously). So of course, the offer was too tempting to pass and that's how you ended up here.

You present yourself to the entrance, greeted by the receptionnist who asks what is the purpose of your visit and once you've answered her, you ask for directions, as you're supposed to meet your boss near the trailer park. Nicely informing you how to proceed, she gives you the ID badge you'll have to wear around here and off you go after you've thanked her. A minute after you've made sure you're going the right way, you walk towards your destination, looking around with amazement gleaming in your eyes. You're getting a glimpse of what is really behind the curtain of it all, hoping it wont ruin anything for you in the long run as you usually spend most of your free time watching tv shows and films on your bed, cuddled with a cup of tea in your hands. No way that after another draining day at the coffee shop you'd go with the others in a noisy and overpriced bar that doesn't even have any decent music playing. That, plus the fact that you simply didn't like getting out.

You see the first trailer a hundred meters in front of you and feel your heart beating faster again. How's your boss going to be ? Is she the type that makes you conmfy on your debut or the one that's all business from the get go ? But mostly, you're wondering about who you'll work for. They didn't give you any name so you just hope it'll be someone nice as you know that some actors can be difficult to handle when it comes to their demands. Just as you pass the first couple of trailers, you see a woman standing near by that waves at you as she gets its you she's waiting for. Waving back and smiling, you stop in front of her and introduce yourself, she does the same just after. Her name's Delilah, she's the head of HR and in charge of all the PAs. She's a little over 40 from what you gather about her just from her looks. A nice brunette with squared glasses, dressed in a red leather jacket that hopefully makes you think she's not one of the bitchy type of boss you've had in the past.

- ''Y/N, right ? Follow me, I'll show you around so you get your bearings as quickly as possible. Did Alistair told you about the job and what it consist of ?'' - ''He did, yeah. He said I'll have to run errands, make sure the actor I'm assigned to arrives on time on set, has everything they need and stuff like that.'' - ''Great, that's about it indeed. You'll have the full list of your attributions on your contract but we'll get to that later.'' She then proceeds to show you the main places you'll have to know in order to do your job without getting lost every five minutes. It's a good thing she makes sure you get a mp when you reach the main set because for now, it all looks like a maze to you and in all fariness, it is. Delilah leads you to the rest of the PAs, all set aside and chating together. Suddenly, you feel like you're back in seventh grade but you manage to smile and wave at them gently. - ''Guys, this is Y/N, your new colleague. I know I don't have to tell you how to behave so make her feel at home with us and I'll see you tonight in my office to sign your papers'', she tells you and you nod to answer as she's already out of the set after she's done introducing you to the others, speaking on her phone. - ''Don't worry about here, she's always like this. We've nicknamed here Speedy because she's always running around, never staying more than 5 minutes at the same spot.'' That's Stewart, one of the other PAs. He's a slim, tall blond 30-something guy that has some impressive neck tattos from what you can see and a couple of piercings on his left ear. He's the main character's PA, played by a new rising star. In fact, the cast of the movie is almost entirely made out of new names in the business, who made an impression lately in a way or another. - ''Just make sure you bring here some sweets from time to time as a bride and you'll be alright sweetie.'' That's Shirley, a young afro-american woman, nearly your age and you smile back at her, feeling like they won't hold against you the fact that you're basically a newbie compaired to them. They seem friendly enough, people you'd probably get along with once you'll get to know them. A few moments later, Delilah's back and heading towards you, saying she'll take you to meet Adam, the actor for who you'll be working for.

A quick wave to the group and you follow Delilah once more to the trailer that he's staying in. His name does ring a bell to you but you're not quite sure it's him. She knocks on the door and a deep voice invites her to get in. You both enter, greeted by an half naked figure, smilling at you as he grabs his shirt in front of him. - ''Hey Deli! I see you brought me some company, how thoughtful of you.'' He hugs her a couple of seconds while you're still recovering from the sight of him, that was quite a first impression you got to say and without any warning, it's your turn to receive a bear hug. - ''Adam, this is Y/N, your PA. Y/N, this is Adam Sacklet, one of the main characters of the movie", she says with enthusiam, "we're lucky he was still available as our director wanted him for the role. As for you, be gentle with her, it's her first day, don't scare her off like the previous one, ok?" she warns him, pointing her index at him as he raises his hands in his defence. They both laugh and you gather it's a private joke so you just smile. You're still a little bit distracted by what you just saw when you hear his voice again, now speaking directly to you. - "Welcome. I promis I'll behave...most of the time", he says with a grin and you can't help but feel your cheeks burn a little. - "That's my boy? I'm gonna steal her from you for a bit longer since she has yet to fill in some info but it won't be long, will you survive until then?" announces Delilah. - "I'll try my best", the tall actor replies dramatically and you smile seeing them act like this around each other, kinda reassured that you won't be left in an unfriendly work environment like the one you just left behind at the coffe shop.

Just a moment after you both exited Adam's trailer, Delilah smiles at you, sensing that the exchange must have been a bit weird from your perspective. - "Don't worry about him, he looks awkward ans creepy most of the time but he's really a nice guy when you get to know him a bit more. Plus, he's easy on the eyes, so there's that working out for him too." You don't dare answer her assessment because you know that if you do, she could easily guess the effect your little introduction with Adam had on you. Luckily, true to Stewart's words, she doesn't linger on and you both crack on to her office where she drills you on some basic rules and makes you sign some forms. After that, you're now officially Adam Sackler's PA and you couldn't even imagine at that time, what impact that would have on your whole life.

On Autumn

I call these chilly, wet days with bright colors and overcast skies the Dying Days. Nature's nowhere close to dying, she's just tucking herself into bed. No, what's really dying is a chapter of life itself. Maybe I see too much syncronicity in this, but defining moments in my life usually happened somewhere between late August and late November.

Today felt like one of those days: colorful, vibrant, chilly, with the earth smelling of decay outside the office - and everything telling me to get the Fuck outta Dodge while I still can.

The Big Boss is in denial. He's repeating to anyone who'll listen that the chip shortage is on its last legs. It's not. Appointments and referrals are in the pits, our no-shows are through the roof, and our clients are down to basically begging and groveling, plastering superlatives on dogshit rebates and hoping beyond hope that calling Joe Average for his 2014 Corolla's going to land them a buyback. My call center colleagues are filling in for the satellite teams that handle tire-change season for local garages. Hours might shift to a nine-to-five to reflect this, which I don't mind.

That covers October, and only October. November is usually dialed in months in advance, ahead of the Holidays, and now we have nothing. The salesforce might see its hours slashed within a week. I'm fine, being on the Production team, but the Sword of Damocles is still up there, all dangly-like. For the second week in a row, we've got nothing planned for Friday.

All because the global chip shortage is driving prices and import costs up the wall. Things get spread out across the chain, but the consumer ends up picking up the saltiest part of the final tab. It's hard to present anything as a great deal when you're looking at a 10% upmark cost for even last-gen sedans. That means no buyback offers. That means no clients for us, and those that do hang on are told to revise their expectations.

When I took the phone, I used to be able to bring in fifteen, maybe twenty referrals and appointments a day. Now, with the same skills and toolset, I bring in three. Sometimes five or six, on my better days - and that's for the mid-range and high-end sectors.

Try calling in and around factory and manufacturing districts. Try convincing a young mother that's already struggling to make ends meet in the midst of the Delta wave that shouldering a debt in the tens of thousands is worth it when her car's barely six years old.

Fuck, no.

The call center's deserted, our huddles turned into the seven or eight remaining regulars hashing things out around the coffee machine, and it's gotten harder than ever to keep the froshes motivated. Now, more than ever, they're aware of how upper management sees them.

They're disposable, and it pisses me the fuck off. We're some of these kids' first job ever, some of my youngest colleagues are still in their mid-teens - and the fun they had over the summer's evaporated. Now we're just the breadline they need for their smartphone contract or their tentpole console and PC releases. The breezy ones turned into cavalier types, then turned brazen - then stopped giving a shit. Four of them are playing hooky almost weekly. Instead of addressing things responsibly, the floor manager's pacing around the lanes and aisles, taking anyone aside who isn't transfixed with their desktop's set of Web apps.

"I'm afraid you're not giving us your 100%" is something I've heard several times over the past week, now. She's given it to me, too. I used to think Floor Manager Boss Lady could look fierce when she needed to - a moderately non-cliché Girlboss type - and now all I'm seeing is a cornered animal. Whenever she reports back to The Actual Boss, it's with taut skin and deepening worry lines. She's terrified.

The veterans feel it, too. Apart from their pension, the paycheck made their modest lives livable. Now, though? Those with enough strength left are scrambling, and those that can't are in the process of navigating HR's darkened halls to try and find an exit that doesn't land them on the unemployment line. Half of these guys' work is starting to look like the kind of stuff you'd see pushed around work placement agencies: pages and pages of LinkedIn printouts and Indeed screengrabs.

The Actual Boss is spending more and more time at the gym. He handles things well, but you can tell that there's a punching bag, somewhere, that's taking the blame for everything from the strikes in South Africa's silica mines to the various manufacturers' head offices being stuck trying to keep the shareholders in line with offers that aren't too generous.

Others don't have release mechanisms. Some colleagues of mine stormed out of the floor manager's office, cussed out shitty scripts in full view of Production team members or just stopped giving a shit. Our metrics are getting worse, which makes people feel worse.

People openly talk about looking for other jobs. In Quebec, at least, etiquette demands that you don't publicly discuss job-hunting while on the clock. There's been several reprimands, already.

As expected, nobody gives a shit. I sure as fuck don't. I don't give in to the temptation, but I also haven't worked my own authority as a fill-in supervisor all that much. I shield the other supers, all the while nodding at the mouthier types and adding I feel ya on the after-hours Discord group.

I've got three interviews lined up. Work's already notified. Supervisors and floor boss accepted that with looks of quiet resignation, but Actual Boss came up to me, offered to give me a raise out-of-pocket (assuming I didn't tell anybody) and more or less begged me to stay.

We get along well, but I also get along with girls in Accounting. How's it going to look for me if I drink from that cup and one of these girls notices weird extras in my slips? I can't do that, not in good conscience.

One of the sales reps took me aside, a few days back. They're not fazed yet, they're partly paid by commission. They make cash even out of sales they cinch outside of our referrals and appointments.

"You know why you'd never really hack it as a salesman, Brain? You're too nice. You empathize too much."

I realized that this was coming from the rat bastard in the salesforce; the salamander who's okay with pricing overused and worn-out demos as close to Stock price as he could without breaking the law.

I smiled icily, took a swig of coffee. "Yeah, it must be nice knowing you'll just go back to the same four Nissans and that you won't ever have to confront a customer's dissatisfaction. Betcha you sleep real well, at night."

He didn't pick up on my sarcasm. "They're just opinions, bro; I'm just here to deal, y'know?"

Sure. Deal away. In the meantime, some of my colleagues have been driving the same busted sedan to the point of being ordered by the cops to get their cars towed in for servicing - all because they can't structure their budget around a broken part that costs two hundred dollars to fix.

I caught one of my older colleagues weeping, alone in the cafeteria. An older lady, sweetest person you've ever met; everyone's Favourite Grandma, no matter the lack of blood relations. She was crying, because she wasn't sure how she was going to afford Christmas presents for her grandkids.

I hugged her after sanitizing my hands, social distancing be damned. If it weren't for my Disability Savings Account, I'd be forced to stick my inhalers on my Visa.

I figured the end of my tenure there would feel like a big, huge nothing-burger. Woop, one office - and zoop; another office!

Instead, it feels like I'm watching clumsy hunters trying to work out how to put a lamed hunting dog out of its misery. Doom and gloom around the water cooler, either in the meatspace or on Slack.

Time to send more resumés - except I'd rather stop and hug more people for a few days, first.

Office Files - Chapter 6 ‘White Night’

Word Count: 5,950

Genre: Smut

Summary: You are a lawyer at a major company. You’ve been given the responsibility to oversee an intern.

Paring: Reader x Jimin x Namjoon x Jungkook

Jimin decided to ignore the second file and just continue with what he knew. He didn't see the point in spending time on sections of the work that he had no idea about. He typed frantically on his computer, rushed to the photocopier room multiple times and even called clients to organize meetings or finalize documents. Time was his enemy today. You gave him a deadline and he needed to meet it or his job would be on the line.

He understood his punishment. It was seriously unprofessional of him to end up fucking a colleague in the bathroom. If only he hadn't thought with his dick and used his mind instead, he wouldn't be in this situation. Work had been stressful, the amount of paper work and the schedule for meetings was crazy. He couldn't blame anyone but himself.

Every now and then Jimin would stop his work and remember the conversation he heard when he entered your office. He felt a little confused at first but then it all started to make sense to him now. He now realized why you were so harsh towards him when it came to work and why you were so distant towards him.

You liked him.

It was the only conclusion Jimin could muster. He couldn't believe that he missed all those signs. Usually, he could detect when a woman found him attractive. Katy showed all the obvious signs, which of course ended up with them fucking. But he couldn't read you. He figured the subtle hints of a smile, or the way you glared at him when he got sections of a case wrong hinted towards something. He even remembered when you had your angry fit a few weeks back and how you stared him down. He now understood your reaction when you caught him and Katy in the bathroom fucking.

You wanted it to be you.

Jimin chuckled to himself and shook his head in disbelief. You wanted him, and you wanted to express those feelings tonight at the charity ball. He wasn't too sure how he would react but he was curious where the night would lead with you. Sure, you were attractive but Jimin never really saw you that way. Not intentionally anyway. He wanted to keep things professional. Of course, he would stare at you when you weren't looking but he never went anywhere further than just 'admiring'. Even when Jungkook would ask him questions about you, Jimin couldn't really answer them truthfully, because he paid no mind. But now it was different. Jimin couldn't but help think of you a little more than just his attractive boss. He felt different towards you.

Jimin's mind started to wander, but his thoughts were broken by a tap on the shoulder, then a hand passing past his vision to grab his attention. Jimin blinked then moved his gaze off his computer screen to the person standing beside him. It was Jungkook. He was grinning with his weight on the cubicle wall "Someone is in deep thought." Said Jungkook with a playful tone.

Jimin hummed in response then leaned back on his chair, feeling a little more relaxed. He took a deep breath, then ran his fingers through is hair. He felt he needed a little distraction from all this work. Distraction from you.

"Kind of, what are you doing here?" asked Jimin with a raised brow. This isn't Jungkook's usual hangout spot. Whenever he was in this vicinity it was either to perv at you or ask Jimin for some advice about a case.

Jungkook tilted his head to the direction of the door indicating the other department "Namjoon is asking for you"

"Oh?" Jimin moved his gaze to the glass doors then back at Jungkook with a curious look.

Jungkook shrugged then adjusted his suit jacket and picked a flint off his shoulder. He couldn't care less about the meeting but felt it was important. "Yeah, something about a meeting and a case file. We all have to be there, the interns that is" he added.

Case file. Jimin hated that word right now. The last thing he wanted was another god damn file.

"Yeah alright, I'll be there in a minute. In the meeting room, right?" asked Jimin, while he shuffled his papers and organized his work. Thankfully, he was finished with the first case.

Once Jungkook left, Jimin stood and looked over towards you. He watched you curiously for a few seconds. You were back on your desk typing away and answering your desk phone. He lowered his eyes and saw how you tapped your feet a little while you spoke on the phone. He also noticed how you would drum your pedicure fingers against the edge of the desk when you started to get a little annoyed. Jimin bit his lower lip then thought looked away. He felt something in his stomach while he watched you. Was it anxiety from all the work you had him do?

He wasn't too sure if he had to wait for you, but since Namjoon did request for him right away, he decided to leave you at your own devices and head to the meeting alone.

"Afternoon" said Namjoon once Jimin walked in. Namjoon was seated at the far end of the meeting table. He wore one of his dark suits again which contrasted against his sleek blonde hair. He always created a professional atmosphere whenever he was in the room. He had a few papers and files neatly stacked in front of him and a pen slowly twirling between his long fingers as he waited.

The room itself was luxurious in design. There was a grey long marble table with leather chairs placed around its edges. One side of the room had a sweeping view of the city and river.

At the table was Jungkook, who sat closest to Namjoon. Jungkook looked already bored of the whole ordeal and was ready to leave the room. He was leaning back against his chair with his arms crossed. Hoseok looked quite pleased even though he wasn't sure what the meeting was about, but he sat with anticipation. Next to him sat a woman. She was in her late 20's with dark sleek hair that was pinned in a bun. She wore a deep blue business suit pants and silk blouse. Jimin saw the woman a few months back, talking to one of the clients in another department, but he didn't know her position within the firm.

Jimin greeted everyone with a nod then pulled out one of the leather chairs and took a seat. He decided to leave a chair empty beside him, creating a gap between himself and Jungkook just in case if you decided to join the meeting later. You were now starting to creep back into Jimin's mind.

Silence swept through the room for a few seconds before it was broken by Namjoon. He lifted a hand and indicated the woman beside Hoseok. "This is Rutuni, she's head of HR and our international partners"

The woman nodded with a soft smile then opened one of her files. She plucked a few papers from it, then started handing it out to each of the interns as she spoke. "Afternoon gentlemen, thank you for coming today. This meeting will be brief, so I'll get right to the point'

Jimin reached over and took one of the papers then scanned over the information while he spoke "Y/N isn't here, should we wait for her?"

This question sparked Namjoon's interest. He smiled at Jimin with his dimples then chuckled. He knew very well that every man in this room, including himself found you attractive. But he was curious why Jimin was suddenly concerned about your absence. It wasn't the first time you were absent from a meeting.

"She's aware of the meeting, however she won't be attending" Namjoon answered. Jungkook's shoulder fell after hearing this.

Rutuni continued "As you are aware in your contracts, your internship allows you a solid employment within the company however, the position is a regular position with a starting salary"

The woman closed the file then laced her fingers together on top of it. "What you have in front of you is quite a difficult case. It is a mock case, but you will submit, write and act like it was real. Each of you will submit the final mockup by the end of next week and present your findings."

There was silence in the room. Jungkook, Jimin and Hoseok exchanged looks.

Namjoon leaned back on the leather chair and grinned. He enjoyed how the interns looked a little confused. It was like telling students about a surprise test "It's a contest. For a managerial position within the company. We're opening a new department. It will be mainly based on housing and building contracts across the state" He continued to grin, noticing the confusion on the interns faces.

Rutini looked over at Namjoon then at the interns again with a smile "Yes, unfortunately it has come down to some sort of competition. I personally felt it wasn't a good idea bu.."

"It was my idea" said Namjoon suddenly. He leaned forward and rested his hands on the edge of the marble "There's no harm with a little competition." He grinned then gave a wink to Rutuni.

Rutini continued talking but narrowed her eyes at Namjoon for cutting her off "Besides, you all have a job here, but we couldn't decide on who could take this role. By submitting electronically and anonymously, it will allow us to choose without bias" Namjoon raised a hand apologetically at her and nodded at every word she said.

Jimin read the mock case then rested the paper on the table before asking a question. He had enough of cases right now, this mock case could be done later in the week. Your files were more important "And who decides this role?"

Namjoon quirked a brow. He shifted his eyes to Rutuni who also was intrigued by the intern's question. All eyes were on Jimin. He was the only intern that spoke after the introduction of the case. Namjoon did notice a few months ago of Jimin's mannerisms, approach, and the way he spoke to people was professional but also slightly authoritative. At first, he thought it was because he worked under you, which allowed him to walk and speak freely but that wasn't necessarily the case. He did see Jimin as the quiet intern, but something else was there and he couldn't quite piece it together. His trail of thought about Jimin was broken when Rutuni spoke and answered the question for him.

"We will. Najmoon, Y/N and I."

Jimin lowered his eyes back on the paper and scanned it again. He already knew what sort of case he would create for the 'competition'.

Hoseok looked a little taken back at the idea of being placed in some sort of competition, but he smiled brightly then clapped his hands together and rubbed them enthusiastically "Well, like Namjoon said 'a little competition doesn't hurt anyone.' I'd like to give this a shot!"

Jungkook was quiet this whole time and kept his arms crossed. He finally uncrossed them then held onto the collars of his blazer and adjusted it. He cracked his neck to one side and smirked.

"Let's do it then" he said. Jungkook was ready, and he was certain he would get the position. The cases he had been preparing for Namjoon allowed him to gather experience and a taste within the field. He was confident.

A four-numbered pin code was pressed onto the keypad then the apartment door opened. Jimin walked in and shut the door firmly behind him before heading to the kitchen area. He placed his case and suit jacket on the bench then loosened his tie. He was completely exhausted but he knew the night wasn't over. He sighed to himself then pinched the bridge of his nose with his eyes closed and mentally ran through the events of today.

He remembered the meeting, the case files assigned by you (thankfully he only had one more left) and the charity ball tonight. Jimin plucked open the buttons of his white shirt with one hand as he held his cell phone with the other. He pressed voicemail and put it on loudspeaker. He set the device aside and let it play through while he got ready for the shower.

"You have 2 messages"

"First message: Hey bro, haven't heard from you in a while. Dad said something about you doing your own thing? Anyhow give me a call. Lisa say's 'Hi' by the way"

Jimin listened in on his brother while he was in the bathroom. He stared at his own reflection then turned on the faucet of the shower before heading in. The steam started to fill the room and fog the mirrors.

"Second message BEEP: Son, think about your decision."

"End of messages"

The main entrance was occupied with people dressed in elegant clothing, laughing and conversing with one another. The ladies wore mostly bright colors, silk dresses and long gowns. The men wore tuxedos or a suit and tie. It was obvious the people were rich and came from the upper tail of society. The charity event was mainly held for speeches and awards given to corporations and government bodies. The award event occurs every year and people always anticipate seeing if their company has won the prestigious award.

Jungkook walked in the hall and felt a little overwhelmed by the whole atmosphere. It was his first professional event with the company. He passed a few people and headed to the main floor where everyone gathered before going to their designated seats. When a waiter had offered a beverage, he gladly took it and felt a little more relaxed. Jungkook moved through the small crowd and headed towards a group of people he recognized from work. Jungkook wore a black suit with dark buttoned down shirt. His attire looked a little casual compared to the other men tonight but, but somehow made it work. Once Jungkook joined his coworkers a few women from the group edged their way closer to him. Jungkook was popular with the women in his department. He always flirted with them whenever he had a chance. He didn't go any further than a few flirtatious words or brief physical contact. His eyes and mind was always on you. He wanted you.

He stayed almost 2 hours after work, preparing the case files. Within the group, he saw Jungkook talking to a few of people. Jimin and Jungkook locked eyes and both nodded to each other as a greeting.

'Evening everyone" said Jimin. Everyone in the group smiled and greeted Jimin in returned and included him in the following conversations. Hoseok joined the group a few minutes after. All three interns started discussing work matters and interesting gossip that occurred during the week. The three of them managed to branch off the main group and stood aside, talking to themselves. Jimin was thankful that he wasn't in any gossip, which meant you didn't tell anyone about the bathroom incident.

You draped a small shawl over your shoulders and held onto a glittery clutch in your hand. The moment you walked up the stairs, a few people recognized you and started talking with you. You smiled and spoke to them all respectfully then made your way inside into the main floor where everyone was waiting to be seated. After speaking to your friend earlier that day, you wanted to see where things would go with Jungkook. He flirted with you at the bar the other day, it was clear that he was interested in you. You knew when Jungkook was in your department, it was either to stare at you or speak to Jimin. He made certain efforts so ensure he was in the same room with you. It felt good knowing someone secretly liked you. A small grin crept onto your lips as you saw your colleagues gathered in the main area. You made your way towards them as you locked eyes with him.

Jimin raised the rim of his wine glass and took a small taste while he spoke to Jungkook and Hoseok. "I'm not too sure how I feel about this whole mock case" said Jimin. It was true, although he thought the project to be easy, he wasn't sure if he was ready for managerial position. He furrowed his brows in thought. Hoseok nudged him in the ribs with an elbow as encouragement. "Out of us three, I'm pretty sure you'll get it. You've been doing cases from the first day. Y/N really threw you in the deep end, now it's going to pay off!" Hoseok leaned closer and wrapped arm around Jimin's shoulder, and looked up at the sky in mock amazement "Imagine, Mr Park Jimin – Manager" Hoseok laughed.

Jungkook kept quiet while Jimin and Hoseok spoke. He felt Jimin was his main competitor, and if Jimin had a good chance of getting the position it meant he needed to work double time just like him. When it came to winning, Jungkook always went above and beyond to get what he wanted. He always won. This mock case wouldn't be any different. Jungkook opened his mouth, about to say something but he paused and saw you walking towards him.

Jimin was about to protest with Hoseok about winning the position but shifted his gaze at Jungkook and noticed him staring at someone. He too turned his attention then landed his eyes on you. "Beautiful" he said under his breath.

You locked eyes with him as you walked towards his group of friends. Since he was watching, you swayed your hips a little further than necessarily. Your fitted white dressed moved with your curves and your heels clicked against the floor.

"Good evening Gentlemen" You said with a soft smile. You looked at each of the interns but lingered your gaze on Jungkook a few seconds longer. All three of the men wore tailored suits. You noticed Jimin's suit and tie. The black suit made his fiery hair stand out. Your attention then fell on Jungkook and his slight casual attire. You liked it. The first male to speak was an intern you only heard from Namjoon, but never met formally.

"Good evening Miss Y/N, I'm Hoseok" He smiled brightly and reached out his hand. You took it and shoot it once with a nod.

"Ah yes, you're the third intern. I believe you work under...." you trailed your sentence, trying to remember who he worked under.

"I work under Rutuni,.." You spoke at the same time as him "Human Resources"

Jungkook slipped into the conversation. His dark eyes scanned your attire slowly then smiled "You look.." He paused, trying to find the appropriate word to describe what he thought of you without sounding so perverted.

"Beautiful" said Jimin softly. A brief smile was shown on his pink lips before he took another sip of his drink.

"Ah thank you" You said with a soft chuckle as you looked at Jungkook.

A waiter walked pass with a silver tray with flutes of champagne. You spoke to the three of them as you reached over and took one in time "Tonight is just a show. I wouldn't bother sitting down if I were you"

Hoseok frowned a little at your comment and tilted his head like a lost puppy "What do you mean?"

"We won't win the award. L&P Associates will most likely win" You eyed your own drink then took a long sip of the bubbling alcohol. You felt the warm liquid down the throat and immediately felt the buzz. You fluttered your lashes then looked the men again. "They're our main competitor" You took another sip and said your words as though it was obvious. You've been at this award ceremony many times. It would start off by speeches from government bodies and small awards given to members of the public. The main event is when the corporate awards are given. It is a prestigious award and allows the company to be recognized globally. It creates more networks which means more money.

You felt a hand rest on your shoulder. You turned a little and saw Namjoon enter the circle with you and the interns. "I'm only here for the free alcohol to be honest" Added Namjoon with a bright smile. "Someone has already started" he laughed. Namjoon eyed your drink.

You smiled a little, raising your flute of champagne "It's never too early to start. I was just telling them how we won't win tonight so there's no point in sitting down" Namjoon nodding slowly, understanding the ordeal but then spoke seriously to the men. "That may be true, but since you gentlemen represent us, you're required to sit with some of the important colleagues. It's your first event. So ..it's mandatory" Namjoon moved his arms little, motioning the men to move with him to the table.

The moment you entered the circle, Jimin couldn't stop staring at you. He kept to himself however and allowed you to talk to them freely. If he spoke it meant you would look at him and that would create knots in his stomach and Jimin wasn't too sure why. His eyes lowered to your lips and watch the curves move and glisten after taking a drink of the alcohol. He started to contemplate mentally if he should talk to you about the conversation he heard earlier. Maybe talking about your feelings and mentioning that he was willing to see where things would go with you. It would be better than just staying quiet. Jimin stepped a little closer to you and was about to say your name but Namjoon entered the circle and spoke instead.

Jungkook eyed you down as you spoke to him and the other guys. His dark eyes trailed down your curves again and was so tempted to reach over and smooth his wide hand over the curve of your ass. He's been wanting to touch it since the incident at the bar. Just the very thought of you and him together started to get his crotch hard. Now wasn't the time and place. But he wanted you so badly. When Namjoon motioned everyone to walk to the tables at the seating area, he noticed that you weren't going to join him. He stayed behind and took a step beside you, reached out and placed his hand on the small of your back and leaned in to your ear with a grin.

"Remember the last time you drank? Maybe you should take it easy?"

The men started to move and you decided to stay back and hang at the bar. You figured once the prestigious award ceremony starts, that's when you'll join the rest of your colleagues. But for now you didn't mind being on your own to drink. You felt a hand on the small of your back and a warm breath wash over the side of your neck. You knew immediately who that voice belonged too. You watched the back of Jimin, Hoseok and Namjoon walk away into the seating hall.

"Remember the last time you drank? Maybe you should take it easy?"

You quirked your brow at the comment but couldn't help grin. You turned your head and looked up at him. He too was grinning ear to ear, creating creases at the corner of his eyes.

"I don't take things easy" You said playfully. Your eyes stayed on Jungkook as you took the last sip of your champagne.

Jungkook scanned his surroundings with his dark eyes as he leaned in again to your side and spoke for your ears only "No, you don't, but I bet you like it fast"

You parted your mouth slightly in shock. The rim of the glass was still pressed on the bottom of your lip. You breathed out slowly and felt a pool of heat between your legs when you heard him speak. You didn't think things would happen so soon. His confidence was overwhelming.

Jungkook remained standing at your side and watched your reaction. He wasn't sure where this confidence came from but he knew if he didn't do anything now, he'd never get a chance to be alone with you. Jungkook reached over and slowly took the empty champagne class from your fingers and stepped around slowly so he could face you directly.

"We could, go to the bar over there and drink a little more and chat" He twirled the glass in his hands and watched it briefly and looked at you again with a grin. "Or we could just get down to what we both really want" He stopped the twirling then reached out and placed it on a silver tray as it passed the both of you.

"And what would that be?" You asked with a quirked brow. Your hand now being empty, so you move it to trace your collar bone until you held onto the pendant on your necklace. You were playing dumb and he knew it. You just wanted to know what the intern would say next. He had already surprised you, you were now wondering what else he had up his sleeve.

Jungkook stepped a little closer and his hand on your hip and held it. You stepped in and had your bodies almost touch. His thumb rubbed over your silk fabric as he leaned down with his head and spoke quietly into your ear. You remained still but lowered your eyes a little to listen to his secret.

"Or..." He paused. He breathed out after smelling your sweet perfume. "Or, we could go back to my place and fuck each other's brains out" He chuckled a little then pulled back to look directly into your eyes.

Jimin took a seat on one of the large round tables. He greeted a few people who sat with him. He recognised them from other departments and briefly talked to about the night's event. After a few moments had passed when he noticed that Jungkook didn't follow them into the seating area. Jimin looked around the table, then back towards the main hall where he saw you and Jungkook standing. Standing a little too close. Jimin narrowed his eyes a little and watched the scene unfold before him. He saw how Jungkook leaned in and whispered something into your ear. He watched how you reacted and how Jungkook quite boldly took the champagne glass away from your grip. He couldn't see your face anymore since Jungkook moved to face you and had his back towards him. A few words were exchanged between the both of you, then before he knew it, the both of you left the venue. Jungkook reached around and had his arm draped over your shoulder as you both walked out.

Jimin clenched and unclenched in jaw in frustration. He couldn't look anymore. He knew where you two were heading. Anyone could piece it together, especially after seeing you two flirt. How could he be so stupid? You clearly weren't talking about him when he overhead you on the phone, it was about Jungkook. And this whole time his stomach was tied in knots thinking about how he could talk to you and explain how he wanted to give whatever you wanted a shot. Was he hurt? He wasn't sure. But he did feel humiliated. A mix of emotions passed through him, but in the end he was just angry. Jimin zoned out after that. He didn't pay mind to the awards given to government officials or how you were correct about L&P Associates winning. He already knew about that. Before the ceremony ended, he got up and decided to go home.

You sat on one side in the back of the taxi, while Jungkook sat on the other. You agreed to follow him once he suggested they should go back to his place. But only under one condition, they couldn't be seen getting into the taxi together. Your idea was to get into a taxi and have it drive up one block and pick up Jungkook. You didn't want anyone seeing you enter a taxi with a young man, when you only just arrived at the charity event moments ago. There were old clients and people who you previously worked with at the event. Your professional reputation was on the line.

As the taxi drove, you kept your eyes out the window and with slight smirk displayed over your lips. You kept your composure and held your clutch in your lap as you sat silently. Jungkook leaned forward and spoke to the driver to turn left then stop at the corner. While he spoke, he reached out behind him and grabbed your thigh briefly and gave it a small squeeze. Just to remind you that he still was there and he wanted you. You moved your head and looked down at his hand and watched how his hand held your thigh tightly. A pang of excitement ran through you as you couldn't wait to have those hands over your body and between your legs. The taxi came to a stop and both of you exited on opposite ends of the car. Jungkook motioned his arm outwards, allowing you to follow closely at his side. You lifted your eyes and noticed that you were in front of a large luxurious apartment building like your own. To be honest, you'd thought you'd end up near the rougher part of town, which of course you wouldn't have mind. No words were exchanged as you both made your way into the building and towards the elevators. You both knew what you wanted and there was no reason for small talk.

When both of you entered the elevator, an older man also joined and stood between the both of you. The man pressed a button, grunted a little then stood and stared at the doors waiting for his floor. Jungkook leaned over and pressed his floor button. You moved your eyes on Jungkook and watch him press his number. You noticed how he lived on the second highest floor.

Jungkook clicked his tongue in anticipation. He wanted to hold you and devour you, but he wasn't alone with you in the elevator. Jungkook looked over and you both locked eyes. He gave a quick wink. You couldn't help but laugh but quickly pressed your hand over your mouth to muffle the sound so the man wouldn't notice. The alcohol gave you a slight buzz. You cleared your throat then looked back towards the doors. The elevator doors 'pinged' open and the old man walked out.

When the doors closed, Jungkook immediately moved across and closed the gap between both of you. He held your shoulders and pushed you back, pinning you against the cold silver wall. He leaned forward and pressed his forehead against yours and let out a shuddery breath. His hands reached down and gripped both of your ass cheeks and gave it a tight squeeze. You gasped from his sudden movement and reached out and gripped his wide shoulders, curling your fingers in the fabric of his suit. You tilted your chin up and almost met his soft lips with yours. His lips brushed over yours as he spoke.

"You have no idea how long I've waited for this" He said deeply. He opened his mouth again, to speak but immediately you stopped him with your mouth. You kissed him deeply, swiping your tongue over his pink lips, wanting entrance. Jungkook gladly responded by kissed back with an open-mouthed kiss. You tasted the alcohol that coated his lips and the sweetness of his tongue. You both took in a deep breath, and resumed kissing but stopped once you both head the ping of the elevator door. You pushed him off you which made him stumble a little. You grinned and Jungkook knew you were now in a playful mood. He stepped out and looked over his shoulder at you, eyeing you down with his lustful eyes and then walked through the dimly lit hallway to his door.

You followed closely behind him. You bit your lip in anticipation and watched him stand in front his door and press in the pin numbers. Once the door opened, he stepped through and you entered also. The room was dark but you could make out the outlines of the walls and furniture from the light outside the window. Jungkook turned around and closed the door, caging you between his arms as he rested his hands on the door in front of him. He reached for your clutch, took it out of your hands and tossed it over his shoulder carelessly.

"You won't need that" He grinned then leaned in and kissed your lips. You laughed at his actions then reached for his collar and started opening his shirt while your mouths remained attached. You both groaned into each other mouths, filling it with hot breath then releasing for more kisses. Jungkook's hands roamed over our body till one rested at the back of your neck and the other on the side of your thigh, allowing you to raise your leg and curl it around his hip. Your fingers hurriedly opened his shirt while his hands tried to reach for your zip. After moments of eagerly wanting to feel each other's warm skin, the night was spent with your bodies tangled and laced in positions and pleasures.

The sun crept through the curtains and painted your bodies with gleaming yellow light. Jungkook shifted in the bed then slowly got up, groaning from the brightness hitting his eyes. He squinted a little then shaded his eyes with his hands and looked at the window. You moved your legs slightly under the sheets which made Jungkook snap his neck to your direction and watch you lay there sleeping on your back. He blinked then remembered the events of last night. He started to grin and loved the feeling of accomplishment. He felt like a king. Wanted you and he finally had you. The game of finally chasing you was over and he won. He knew nothing was happened between the both of you, in fact he didn't care. Just knowing that he slept with one of the hottest women in company was an achievement alone. Jungkook turned and stares at you, watching you sleep soundlessly. His gaze trailed down your body and saw the shape of your frame under the silk sheets. Slowly and gently, he tugged on the material and saw the edges move further down till your soft breasts where exposed before him. He licked his lips. Jungkook reached over to the side of his bed and grabbed his phone.

We saw Elton John this past Monday night in Tampa Florida on his farewell tour. What a treat. Honestly I grew up on his music as most of us did. I think 100 years from now it will be playing in elevators! He played for 3 hours. You read that right! He is arguably the most famous/singer/songwriter/composer of our time. One of my favorite stories about him was how tough and distant his mom was (think mean ugh) and for an 11 year span he didn’t talk to her. This is a man known the world over as a humanitarian and honored by the Queen, now married with two kids. Seemingly he has it all. Before his mom passed he had lunch with her and told her numerous times how he loved her and enjoyed their time together and she said, “Well you know I don’t approve of who you are and what all that you’ve become.” Most of us would want to dagger ourselves after sticking her first! Sir Elton John said, “I know mom, that’s ok... I love you.”

My writing’s been in the gutter lately, but I have a few prompts I wrote but never posted, so might as well, right? :) Also I live for the secret relationship AU, so there’s that, too. Thanks for the request, honey. Sorry it took me ages to get to it.

He didn’tknow who she was.

Of course, he didn’t know who she was. If he did, Owenwould never have the guts to actually ask her out. He’d heard the name ClaireDearing long before he saw the face to associate with it, and she had quite areputation in the park. As far as he was aware, she was practically a local Dementorof sorts, swooping in unannounced and sucking out the souls of the innocent. Anightmare in the human form, or so the rumor had it.

In allfairness, it would never even cross his mind to connect this kind of image withthe woman he spotted at the resort when he drove over there from the paddock tosign some leftover HR paperwork before his job with the raptors truly started.Red hair, curious green eyes, and a delicate curve of brightly painted lips –the hot afternoon breeze was throwing her hair in her face as she stood outsidethe main administrative building, talking to one of the handlers. Owen grew toknow how to spot those – tanned skin and khaki pants, usually, and an instinctto look over their shoulder now and then even when there were no animals around.The latter Owen couldn’t blame them for.

The woman,however, looked nothing like someone who would wreak havoc and leave panic andfear in its wake. She ws stunning.

Thinking aboutthat day, he wondered sometimes if their lives would turn out differently ifsomeone gave him a heads up and maybe singled her out in the sea of faces. Alas,he was a ‘fresh meat’ and nobody cared.

Right now,Claire was sitting at the dining table in his bungalow, typing away at lightspeed on her laptop, trying to finish a report or an email or something just asridiculously boring, and it was driving him insane. But at least she was a pleasureto look at.

Dressed innothing but his shirt, so big if looked like a mini-dress on her, with thesleeves rolled up to her elbows and thin-rimmed glasses perches on the bridge ofher nose, she was chewing on her lip in concentration, and there was only somuch he could do to stay in his spot on the couch and let her work. This wasthe rule. She didn’t mind spending the night so long as he wasn’t getting inthe way when she had issues to take care of, and what kind of a moron would hebe to object?

Her hairwas still mussed from when he showed her just how he missed her since he lastsaw her this morning an hour ago, and Owen was very much aware of the goofysmile plastered on his face, following the movement of her hand as she tuckedthe strands, curling in the humidity of his house behind her ear every now andthen, her foot tapping absently on the floor whenever she paused to re-read afinished paragraph.

If anyonetold him six months ago that they’d end up here, like this, he wouldn’t believethem, and then he’d probably spend every night praying that they were right. Theirfirst date was a mess, but the kiss at the end of it that stretched out untilthe early hours of the morning proved that they had something to work with, andman, was he glad about taking that shot!

“Come on,Claire, it won’t be that long,” he prodded again.

There wasfair of forts happening on the mainland next week, and after being stuck on theisland for nearly 8 months now, Owen was starting to lose his mind. He wasn’tbored, per se, the job keeping him busy enough to make the days fly by in ablur, but he desperately craved the change of scenery. Besides, Claire insistedthey keep their relationship under wraps in the park, hating the idea of thegossip mill churning them into a pulp, but if they managed to get away for theweekend, it wouldn’t be an issue. For the reasons he was still trying to get interms with, Owen desperately wanted to have some normalcy with her – not justsex, although it was so good he wondered how he even made it through 35 yearsand 3 months of his life without it, but the simple stuff, like holding hands,damn it!

“I toldyou, my calendar is full,” she sighed.

He paused thevideo game he was trying – and failing – to occupy himself with while she wasbusy. “Well, that’s an easy fix. Just take a day out of it.” She gave him alook over the rims over her glasses, struggling not to smile. “What? Do I needto start telling chemistry jokes to get a reaction from you?” He added solemnly.

“What areyou, 12?” She shook her head, tuning back to the screen, but her lips werequivering, the smile ready to blossom and turn him into a pile of ashes withits brightness.

“Justsaying,” he shrugged, unpausing the game again, although he’d lost track ofwhat he was doing or what it was about at all. “We could try that seafood dietyou keep talking about. Like, you see the food, and you eat it.”

Claire exhaledwith exasperation. “Another pun, and you’re sleeping on the couch tonight,” shethreated mildly.

“This is my house,” he pointed out defensively.

“Would youlike to move the party to my place?” She enquired, an eyebrow arched.

Owen regardedher grimly. “Your phone’s ringing nonstop when we’re there.”

“Lucky foryou, it doesn’t work here,” Clairerolled her eyes. “There’s no reception in this part of the island.” She snortedfor good measure as if it was his personal fault, and he offered her a cheekygrin in response, showing that he did consider himself quite lucky in thisregard, indeed.

“Only onthe roof,” Owen added, and she finally closed the laptop and pushed it away, anexasperated groan bubbling up in her chest. She pushed her hand through herair, and glared at him in a silent reminder that he was walking on a very thinice here.

As a womanin a position of power who didn’t like to share it, Claire was rather fond ofmaking him aware of the fact that this relationship was happening on her terms,and for the first month he almost believed her, except the goddamn reputationthat everyone was pushing on her had nothing to do with the person she reallywas, and maybe she wasn’t willing to relinquish the control easily, but he wasgetting good at coaxing it out of her, one kiss at a time.

Owen tossedthe controller on the coffee table and uncurled from the couch, padding acrossthe living room-slash-kitchen until he was standing behind her chair, handsgripping its back. Claire looked up as he leaned down to plant a kiss in herhair, and his lips ended up on her forehead instead. Owen’s lips curled slightly.He loved the way she smelled – of vanilla, his laundry detergent, and sex,mixed with the scent of the jungle that effectively permeated into their skin formhanging around them like a cloud 24/7.

“Two days,”he whispered, catching her eyes and holding her gaze.

Claire turnedaround and allowed him to pull her up to her feet. He took off her gassescarefully and put them on the top of her laptop before threading his fingersthrough her hair, her face lifted up to his and his gaze roaming around herfeatures, taking in the details – the curve of her eyebrows, the slight worrycrease on her forehead, the goddamn freckles. God, she was so beautiful.

“I’ll thinkabout it,” Claire said at last, knowing that it was a losing battle, and hisgrin widened by the moment, beaming with the intensity of the sun down on her.

“Okay,”Owen agreed, almost managing not to sound too smug about it, then leaned in topeck her on the tip of her nose, his voice dropping and his eyes getting darker,“Let’s back to bed.”

Chesca’s Current Status

This weekend was amazing and gave me so much happiness, something I feel like I haven’t been in a long time. You know that the rest of this post is gonna explain why lol

So earlier last week I heard that a friend was selling tickets to the Alex Aiono and William Singe concert that I had been eyeing since like I think December or January, whenever they had released their tour dates. I was debating about it but by the time I decided tickets sold out already. So when I heard about my friend selling her ticket, the whole week I thought about it. I told her I’d tell her by Friday night. The week goes by and I was still debating, I was pretty broke and i knew if I went I would spend a lot of money on like getting there and back, and then food, and subway. What actually made me decide was that after class friday Nat Jose and I went for coffee with our old Don and I mentioned I was debating in going to toronto for this concert and Nat was like, “yo, lets go, i need a getaway and celebrate finishing design.” Plus Nellie was throwing a late bday party for Paul Saturday but I knew that Lisa would be there and that Thavi could potentially be there too. I honestly just didn’t want another repeat of gfx. I wouldn’t have been comfortable and I didn’t want that to translate on a celebration. Plus thinking about being in the same room as those two made me really anxious. I mean I know I didn’t do anything wrong but its the bad vibes and negativity I know those two people have for me that would make me uncomfortable. I mean if you had a choice I think you would choose a weekend in toronto by yourself, going on a few dates and going to see one of you favourite Youtube singers live, over a few hours of not knowing how to act around two people who use to be the closest people in your life who have now come to hate you for who know what reasons?

So yea after a night of drinking and dancing at Phil’s with Nat, Jon, and Jose, which by the way was super fun because of the drunken talks and the company. Nat and I ventured off to Toronto Saturday morning. We went and got Pho in Chinatown, and then went to Eaton’s to shop and pick up some stuff. We ate there and didn’t go to Celene and Abby’s place till around 6pm. Funny story about where we ate for dinner. We went to the like cafeteria type place. I went to the coffee and pastry section since I was still full from Pho. I got an iced latte with a cheesecake. While I was in line, there was a hella rude customer who was on his phone telling the guy behind the counter (who was pretty cute btw) that he wanted more syrup on his waffle. He was also waiting for his drink and when the girl called it out he didn’t think it was his, when it clearly was. When he had left the cute guy behind the counter and another co-worker who I realized were filipino started talking about how rude he was. I listened and laughed cuz I know their struggles too and when the guy gave me my drink i smiled and said Salamat, and he was thrown off by it and he smiled back and I went on my merry way.

Conversation with Nat was pretty good, we go pretty deep into my stuff, just with dating again and how I had been feeling the past few weeks. After that we went back and I redid my make up and taxied to the venue. I thought I was gonna be late but the show didn’t start till 8pm, line just started to move at 7pm. We get into the venue and its just standing so no seats. Its pretty packed and it was cold in there. I was supposed to meet up with my friend Jezeth but she was in the middle and I couldn’t find her so I just chilled where I was. When alex came out I had an amazing view of him, like most of the people there were girls who were with their girl friends or girls with their boyfriends, plus most of the people were asian so they were all shorter then me all I had to do was tippy toe a bit and I could see alex so well! The girls I ended up standing with and eventually befriending were super fun! They were drinking too so their vibes were legit and we danced and fangirled the whole time together!

So let me talk about Alex, this man, omg he was so much cuter in person, his smile 10x warmer and his voice.... like fuck me, lol Like I thought that it wouldn’t sound as good as his videos but honestly he sounded exactly the same, even better live actually. I could listen to this man sing and play guitar for hours! I totally jus vibed out during his set, really took in the moment and just enjoyed being in the same space as him. *sigh* his gf is so lucky! lol

So after Alex it was obviously William and I only knew him from the songs he and Alex collabed together on. I honestly was not prepared, like this man, was sooooo good live, like his falsetto is on point, his covers were amazing! I love his style, his r&b swag and even his original songs... man. He got me feeling feels too. A little bit into his set my phone died and I actually am so glad it did. I really jus experienced the night and really enjoyed myself without worrying about getting things on camera. I just lived in the moment. I was just so happy and loving life. Alex ended up coming back later on and they sang the songs they did together and I almost died, like I felt like I went to heaven lol

After the concert, which ended around 10:30pm I decided to walk back, well partially. I had to find a place that was open where I could charge my phone. So I went the Tims on College and Yonge. Stayed there for a bit and then took the street car to Abby’s place. Decided to get BK cuz i was hungry and then waited for Nat to come back since she went to go and hangout with Jack while I was at the concert. When she got back we talked a bit before we went to bed. I let her sleep on the bed and I took the ground, which wasn’t bad actually.

We sat by the water for 30 mins, just talking about life, relationships, school, etc. The spontaneous nature of the whole night was something I honestly have never done before. Probably one of the best first dates I’ve had. we ended up walking up spadina from the rogers centre and made a full circle back to Abby’s place. We walked for 3 hrs almost. When we said our goodbyes he hugged me so tight and I was gonna kiss him on the cheek but i ended up giving him a peck on the lips, and then he hugged me again and then this time he kissed me and then just walked away all shy like. It was so cute and like the best way to end my night.

I went to sleep around 2am I think. Woke up at noon, and went and got starbucks with celene and her man. Then took a go train to bramalea and then a bus to kitchener go, then the 8 bus to asian grocery, then walked to campus and made it for the 5pm meeting. We then set up at 6pm for our event, and then EOT was at 7PM-10PM.

So that was my weekend getaway with myself. Honestly I’m so happy I decided to go away, even though now i’m hella broke, it was so worth it. I mean like I finally know what I want to do and what I’m gonna tell my parents my plan is. This weekend gave me motivation to get my shit together and just go after what I want to do and what I want to pursue. When Bradburn polled his network of more than 5,000 HR bosses, he asked for the biggest reasons their teams had shared for wanting to go back to the office. Seventy per cent cited social and mental health issues, including feelings of loneliness. “I think young people in particular really need that connection,” Bradburn says.

The effects of working from home have been little studied, partly because remote working was pretty rare until this spring. The proportion of the UK workforce who worked “mainly” at home went from 4% to 5% in the UK between 2015 and 2019, according to the Office for National Statistics. Permanent home working was vanishingly rare.

“It’s always been a pretty backwater topic,” says Nick Bloom, a British economics professor at Stanford University in California and an expert in home working. The last time Bloom’s phone rang so much was 2013, he says, when Marissa Mayer, then the chief executive of Yahoo, banned remote working. “Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home,” read a leaked memo to staff.

The assumption has been that remote workers slack without direct supervision. But do they? In 2010, a Chinese travel agency with 16,000 employees came to Bloom in search of evidence. Ctrip, which assumed workers would prefer being at home, was spending big money on offices in Shanghai. It wanted to know what remote work might do for the bottom line. “Their proposition was that they’d save on rent, but lose on productivity,” Bloom says.

Bloom devised a trial – the first of its kind – involving 250 members of a Ctrip call centre. Half of the group were selected at random to work from home for nine months. The other half would continue to work in the office and the productivity of both teams would be measured.

None of Ctrip’s assumptions were right. Productivity in the home group went up by 13%. Without the distractions of the office, agents were making more calls and taking fewer breaks and sick days. “They were truly stunned by the results,” Bloom says of Ctrip. Its executives calculated not only that they could save millions in rent, but also that they could make $2,000 (then about £1,300) more in profit annually per employee.

But the experiment also measured happiness. When Ctrip polled staff, half of the home-based group wanted to go back to the office. “Loneliness was the single biggest reason,” Bloom says. Plus, they were not in lockdown conditions: only people with a spare room took part; none had children at home or flatmates; and they still worked one day a week in the office.

Bloom is now constantly fielding calls from anxious executives. “They have said productivity has been great and they’re thinking of abandoning the office,” he says. “I’m counselling that it’s shortsighted and high-risk.” Bloom had always been supportive of remote working, if not full-time, even after the Ctrip experiment. “Now I feel like I’ve gone from being an evangelist for working from home to an evangelist for the office,” he says.

Erin Mackenzie, 23, knows what it can be like to work remotely full-time without the stresses of lockdown. In the summer of 2019, she got a junior marketing job with an online education company based in the Middle East. Mackenzie, who lives in a small house in a small town 50 miles north of New York City, thought working from home would be great.

After four months of long days alone at the tiny desk in her bedroom, Mackenzie had a panic attack. She had lost weight and become depressed. “At first, I thought it was because the job was demanding, but I realised it was more the isolation and not being able to interact with people,” she says. “I hadn’t realised I’d relied on that so heavily for my mental health.”

Mackenzie also felt suffocated by the digital monitoring, which was already becoming standard in big firms. Hers was relatively light. An agenda app would track tasks and alert faceless bosses when they were done. Response times to chats were noted. “It definitely added to me feeling like I didn’t have set hours and the anxiety of it all,” she says.

If offices were to evolve to extract as much as possible from human resources, there are concerns that firms would use technology to tighten the screws further in our homes. Interest in the software offered by Teramind, a Florida-based employee monitoring and analytics firm with more than 2,000 clients, has tripled in lockdown. When downloaded to employees’ computers, Teramind’s “agent” can measure time spent on different windows. It can play back or live-stream a view of an employee’s screen and record his or her every keystroke. It can also raise a flag if certain predetermined words are typed.

Before lockdown, 70% of Teramind’s clients were concerned about security – leaks of sensitive information, for example – while 30% saw productivity as the priority. “Now, it’s flipped,” says Eli Sutton, the firm’s head of operations. But he rejects the suggestion of Orwellian overtones. “I can say first-hand that employers have better things to do than to spy on you all day,” he says. “Teramind is an extra set of eyes to make sure distractions aren’t causing issues.”

Will Gosling, who leads Deloitte’s consulting on “human capital” in the UK, says: “We’re at the beginning of a very big ethical debate about this. We were already seeing businesses wanting to get more data on employees and the pandemic has brought it into sharp focus … but they need to support and build health and wellbeing.”

Trade unions worry that working from home will challenge privacy and rights, making it harder for employees to organise or be aware of how colleagues are being treated, particularly in the most onerous fields of white-collar work. There are questions about liability. Mental health is part of the picture. “Employers have a responsibility to ensure worker wellbeing and that doesn’t end just because people are not in the office,” says Tim Sharp, the senior policy officer for employment rights at the Trades Union Congress.

Mackenzie quit after the panic attack and got a job with an insurer. She immediately felt better, even while enduring a two-hour commute to Manhattan for her training. She now works in a smaller office a short drive from home – or, rather, she did until the pandemic. It helps that she now works for a better, kinder company. Her fiance is working at home, too. “Without him here, I probably would have crumbled,” she says.

At their best, offices are crucibles for ideas and lifelong friendships, particularly among younger workers with small homes but big social circles. The Office was not just a comic study of business park malaise – it was a love story. Working from home may boost productivity for a while, “but it’s so costly in terms of creativity and inspiration”, Bloom says. “We’re all suffering from Zoom overload and feeling worn down.”

Flick Adkins, who is 28, counts some of her colleagues as her best friends. For three months, she has been cut off from them while working from the flat she shares with five other people in north London. She works for LRWTonic, a market research company, and takes a lot of private calls. She has to sit cross-legged on her bed, stacking her laptop on part of her vinyl collection. She has settled on 20 records as the optimal height.

Adkins’s now empty office has a ping pong table and a coffee machine, where she would chat with friends before starting her day. On Fridays, she and her 20 mostly young colleagues would go out for lunch and have drinks after work.

Like Francis, Adkins feels lonely, down and unmotivated. “Having an office was symbolic of normality,” she says. “I loved just being at my desk and hearing the buzz and all the conversations … I can count on two hands the number of times I’ve said: ‘I don’t know much longer I can do this.’”

Last month, Adkins’s boss, Anna Dunn, floated with her team the idea of ditching the office for good and saving £200,000 a year in rent. “I said that the money would be distributed to them in a bonus, to some degree,” Dunn, 40, says from her kitchen. She, too, misses the office. “I thought there might be this desire to stay remote, but not one person does. They all want to go back.”

The sounds of the office have a new resonance. More than half a million people have tuned into The Sound of Colleagues, a web page and Spotify playlist of workplace sounds, including keyboards, printers, chatter and coffee machines. Red Pipe, a Swedish music and sound studio, created it in April as a joke, but its data suggests that people keep it on in the background.

Progressive employers are racing to find ways to recreate the joys and perks of office life. Google is laying on cookery classes and mindfulness sessions, as well as offering $1,000 (£780) to each employee for equipment. Lauren Whitt, Google’s wellness manager and resilience lead, says demand has grown for her team’s services, which include video counselling and therapy by text for people who lack privacy. “We’re also seeing more families having more access [to these services],” she adds.

If reports of the death of the office have been exaggerated, everyone agrees it won’t look the same. Bloom envisages a new landscape of smaller offices, with employees alternately working at home for half the week to bring down costs and make physical distancing more viable. Budgets for nice interiors will fall. “I think the office will be more suburban, more spacious and nastier-looking,” he says.

Francis would not care. When I speak to her, she has taken a week of holiday. She had anxiety before the pandemic, which partly expressed itself in a need to be busy all the time. But, after three months of sometimes 12-hour days and a deepening sense of unease, burnout has become a worrying prospect. Not that she can really escape her place of work. “I’m just sort of winging it this week and not planning too much,” she says from her bedroom couch. “I just need a bit of time to gather myself.”

WE start with the goods and evils of the education system followed in India before moving on to an interesting debate specifically in eight parts and finally the rather controversial domain of inter-caste love marriages!

Indian education system good or bad

The education system in India suffers from some serious lacunae. These include preference for good marks/grades over being knowledgeable, lack of encouragement for thinking out of the box (asking questions in the class is considered rude and seldom encouraged; almost non-existent practice of extra reading; education restricted to prescribed textbook and help/guide books, and that too limited to 24 hrs. before the examination day!), rigid and outdated syllabi/curriculum, heavily underpaid professors/teachers (bright minds stay away from this career; professors don’t show much zeal for teaching, they just “go through” the motions), only a few colleges with good quality of education where you have to be in the top elite to gain admission besides there being a lack of passion for education in the real sense (most students go for engineering/medicine on the advice of “elders”!).

Now, for some serious facts and stats regarding Indian education system vindicating the aforementioned lacunae (note that these stats are based on those provided by the government of India itself freely on the web): In India, just 11% of the children finishing school joins a college whereas in the US, this figure amounts to a whopping 83%. As per the eleventh plan, to increase this enrolment level to 15%, India needs to invest approx. Rs. 22.5 billion but it has allotted only a fourth of the total needed.

According to a study by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, 90% of the colleges and 70% of the universities that the council graded were of middling or poor quality. The standard of school education has stagnated too. In rural India, there is no teaching activity on about 50% of the working days in the primary schools.

There is an endemic shortage of teachers with even the IITs reporting a 20% to 30% shortfall in faculty. Indian universities, if one goes by average, revise their curricula only once in 5 to 10 years but by then they get defeated in both letter and spirit.

Corruption is the by-word in higher education having become rampant and institutionalized due to over-regulation by the government and multiplicity of education agencies leading to what else but stagnation in this very vital sector of education.

The lack of good institutions has seen cutoff percentages for entry into good colleges soar to almost impossible levels (at Delhi’s SRCC college, this percentage was as high as 98.75). There is an undue pressure to do well in the secondary board exams because of which the suicidal tendency has grown alarmingly.

Owing to poor quality of education at home, Indian students now spend no less than $7000 million to go abroad and study in foreign universities. Still the government is adamant over its peculiar stance of not permitting foreign universities to set up shop in India.

We have almost done with the bad points of the Indian education system. And, to end on a bright note, almost 50% of the country’s population is below 25 years. Almost 10% of them or 120 million are between the ages of 18 and 23. Let them have both knowledge and skills; they could surely drive India’s competitive and entrepreneurial spirit and transform it into a major global power. Isn’t it a good ending to the bad side of Indian education scenario?

In the current era, one witnesses a plethora of crimes of all types but none comes close to the most sinful act of looting the most gullible general public at large openly in front of their own eyes by whatever means or names you put it – religion, customer care, consumerism and all that is left over in this rather long but undesirable list of swindling and cheating!

What to speak of the general society, even in temples, we see people worshipping and performing rituals just for the sake of trifling and material things. Nobody is prepared to make efforts for the real fruit of devotion, the peace that passes all understanding, self-realization, an answer to the eternal query of human life – “WHO am I?”. And, in most of the shrines, the so-called ‘pujaris’ (in essence, they are only pandas like in the Kalkaji temple, to mention one) take full advantage of this lackadaisical attitude fomenting it further for their own selfish ends. They encourage and exhort the gullible devotees to donate more and more in order that their narrow worldly wishes are fulfilled. But, what is to be understood is the fact that you go to a temple only to meet GOD, your Best Friend and ally; Rest is all superficial. But neither do you know this fact nor do the so-called learned pundits tell you or make you know that. All that is left is the hallo bulla of rituals, noise, pushing and jostling with no or little ‘peace of mind’! The so-called customer care department in most of the big private sector names (such as Vodafone, for instance) and MNCs is there to ostensibly provide help to harried customers and clients of the company in question but what is to be understood is the fact that the customer care ‘agent’ has only got a single minded objective of helping his company first by way of increasing its revenues in whatever way possible, by hook or by crook!

I don’t have to elaborate much on how people are getting looted in the name of modernity or modern consumerism, if I may put it that way. The simplest example is the 1+1 free schemes floated in the market to dupe the gullible customers of their hard earned valuable money. Similar in nature are most of the other ‘free’ consumer schemes! I may also add here the part played by aggressive advertising of the modern day products most of which is misleading at hindsight. But the pumped up euphoria created weighs heavily on the nerves and minds of the unsuspecting people who are thereby taken for a ride by the modern consumer companies.

There are many more things left in this long but rather indescribable list of rather ‘subtle’ swindling and cheating which you may count for yourself!

Parking Nuisance N Road Mayhem

- Traffic on the increase

- Lack of adequate public transport

- Lack of coordination between civic authorities, that be, such as MCD, NDMC etc. etc.

- No ‘parking sense’ and lack of sensitivity towards others (case example: an ambulance carrying an emergency heart patient ‘obstructed’ due to road blockage)

- No rules / regulations at all, literally N virtually, being adhered to; rules / regulations if, at all, exist only on paper!!

- Utterly disdainful selfishness on the part of each one of the commuters, or, for that matter, on the part of each one of us forming the social fabric, the so-called members of the modern ‘civil’ society!

Nobody can deny the fact that traffic on our roads is ever increasing day by day what with the Indian population growing at a phenomenal rate and touching a whopping 1.25 billion as per the year 2013 data. Be it a senior pro, a young executive or a middle aged person, each one wants to ride his own bandwagon / vehicle. Even more alarming is the fact that each one is in a tremendous hurry to get to his respective destination. If somebody has to reach half an hour early, he would start half an hour late rather than an hour early. This is the story of each one of us, whether you like it or not!

Added to it is the factor of inadequate public transport. YES, the Metro has “arrived” but a little too ‘late’ and achieved a little too ‘less’ than desirable. One point to understand is that the metro cannot solve all the transport problems on its own. It needs adequate support from other sectors such as state run buses, autos, taxis and other vehicles, wherever and in whatever way they can prove helpful. In fact, a carefully crafted ‘public transport network’ is the need of the hour. One thing is clear. The public won’t mind paying and shelling out a reasonable amount to travel in convenience and in good time too. It is now up to the civic authorities, that be, to rise to the occasion and deliver!!

On the contrary, what one finds is the complete lack of coordination between the various civic authority channels N agencies such as the MCD, the NDMC, and so on and so forth. What one does is undone by the other and what is done by the latter is undone by the former. The classic case is the digging up of roads by the various agencies such as the Delhi Jal Board, i.e. DJB (for laying the sewer lines, for instance), the Gas Authority of India Ltd., i.e. GAIL (for supplying PNG directly to homes, for instance), etc. etc. They simply keep coming at you, one after the other, and the roads virtually remain dug up for most of the time.

About our ‘parking or road sense’, the less said, the better! It is just as if we want the complete road for ourselves leaving the others to fend by themselves. The only sensitivity we have is for ourselves only. If we want to park our car / vehicle, we would do it simply without a thought for others. If we want to put up a ‘temporary tent (shamiana, as it is referred to as in Hindi)’, we would do it right in the centre of the road, as if the whole and complete road belongs to us only with the others being mere ordinary onlookers or spectators, who have come to watch our show of ego N strength. This inevitably leads to traffic snarls / jams! But, who cares for an emergency hospital case losing vital N crucial time, in the process!

In modern day India, the law of the jungle rules the roost!! Even in a jungle, the animals follow some simple rules by way of their natural instinct!! But, in our modern society, rules N regulations exist only for namesake! They exist only on paper! And, I really don’t blame the general public for this. Who would like to follow rules N regulations when an honest person is unfairly penalized for no reason even as trespassers go scot free for every reason? It’s for our senior leaders to show and pave the way for others to follow!!!

Last, but not the least, we must understand the simple fact that as good users of the roads, we must be totally unselfish in our approach. WE must understand the simple fact that to be actual humans, we must discard the animalism in us and be completely humanitarian in our approach to use of the roads. Then, and only then, we can build a truly good ‘civil’ society for the common good of each one of us!!!!

(Lack of Proper) Places / Spaces for Social Events N Public Toilets

The Civic authorities, that be, charge the populace by way of various taxes like income tax, property tax, road tax, sales tax, and so on and so forth. As such, they are obliged to provide proper N adequate public places for social events lack of which leads to people putting up ‘shamianas’ N temporary tents on the road itself, which, in turn, leads to traffic snarls / jams and causes inconvenience, in general, to general commuters. In case of an emergency like a hospital case, this could even prove fatal N catastrophic!

The Civic authorities would do well to remedy the situation and work for the welfare of the general public at large rather than serving their own narrow ends N indulging in petty political games N gimmicks!!

I may add here that providing N maintaining neat N clean public toilets (as also garbage waste boxes) is another bounden duty of the Authorities and that too free of cost, preferably. This point is to be understood even more significantly in the wake of our Honorable PM, Mr. Narendra Modi’s hugely pumped up bandwagon N clarion call of “Swachh Bharat” Andolan N ‘Abhiyan’, as Mr. Modi likes to put it!!!

Corruption N its Ramifications

I really don’t need to introduce you to “corruption”! It’s rampant and ever on the increase in India!!

While everybody talks of ‘Ram-Rajya’, nobody has the guts to make any sort of painstaking efforts in the right direction, that is, self effacement N thinking about the welfare of the “W-H-O-L-E” rather than just the “p=a=r=t=s”!

Whichever and whatever political party comes to power, the fate of the general populace never changes and remains, more or less, the same. Of course, to gain power, our cunning politicians, Mr. Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi CM and the main / front face of AAP (Aam Aadmi Party), being no exception , make big promises only to back out later on, as per their own suitability N convenience. And, even if the government allocates some funds for emancipation of the poor and the downtrodden, they seldom reach the latter and remain virtual paper concepts N pipedreams to be consigned to the bin at the earliest available N convenient opportunity.

Our bureaucracy, and for that matter, the w-h-o-le system, from the top rungs down to the lowermost channels, has become totally inept, defunct, and is affected with serious plague and if I may put it that way, with Dengue N Malaria as well to boot.

You need a job! First of all, none is available thanks to our elephantine growth of population. Second, if there is any, you need some sort of a link to gain it. It could be a bribe; it could be a call from the higher ups; or, even brute force! So, what do you do? Either, act against your conscience and get the job, by hook or by crook, or sit quietly at home, feeling thoroughly frustrated inside out!!

Gandhiji has been reported to advise the dismantling of the Indian National Congress after we had gained independence from the autocratic N anarchical British Rulers but there were suave leaders like Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, who had their own axe to grind and didn’t heed to Gandhi’s noble N wise suggestion. The result is there to see for all of us. The Congress has ruled India for almost sixty years but the lot of the common man has not improved even six per cent!

Martyrs like Saheed Bhagat Singh, who were actually responsible for instilling fear into the British regimen leading to our consequent independence, had sounded a word of caution to their fellow brethren N Countrymen – “Don’t get complacent and become a slave of your own leaders! They will be even more dangerous N notorious than the Englishmen!”

Just, reflect for a minute and peep unto your selves!! How prophetic N true these words / gems N pearls of wisdom have proved to be!!

OUR Unreserved ‘Reservation Policy’

Continuing from where I left my last piece, a word about our ‘reservation policy’. At the time of our independence (1947), it was rightly felt by the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar led Constituent Committee that some sections of our society were in an inferior position (although Gandhiji called them ‘Harijans’) relative to others and needed to be compensated for it. As such, they allowed reservations to be made for such unjustly treated sections for 10 years. But, what is appalling is the fact that they have continued till date for more than 60 years now and even other communities are demanding N vying for reservations.

This is primarily due to the fact that our leaders, for their own vested interests and to eke out vote banks for themselves, have allowed this practice to continue and even grow by leaps And bounds!

I, for one, would like to phase out reservations slowly but steadily. Let me illustrate, by a live example, my viewpoint. Suppose, somebody has made it to the IAS or the Indian Civil Services, for that matter, by way of reservations! Now, he is an (IAS) officer in his own right, enjoying all the privileges that go along with this tag N plum post. He, along with his family, has slowly but surely moved up to the upper rungs of society and he is now no longer discriminated against. So, how can you continue to provide reservations for him in his service or for his children, for that matter, who should now be allowed to compete with others solely on merit N nothing else!

DEFILING the Very Places WE Worship

Yesterday, I was passing by a nearby SHIV temple N PEEPAL tree and I could make out some devotees offering their prayers and worship at the PEEPAL tree. It was all going very well when suddenly I happened to see a pile of garbage N rubbish near the very place of worship, literally at the feet of THE TREE to my utter disbelief, shock N amazement!!!

I just couldn’t understand and was at a total loss at this sort OR mode of worship!

First of all, can IT really be called WORSHIP or worthy of being designated as ‘True’ OR “Real” WORSHIP at all?? In the second pace, if we can DEFILE God, ‘Defiling’ ourselves becomes and is even easier! Finally, what sort of legacy OR message are we conveying to our progeny or leaving for the future OR coming generations???

It’s a commonplace habit to find fault with others even when the entire mistake is ours!! As SHRI KABIR DAS JI put it so befittingly – “I went from street to street, place to place, to find evil, but couldn’t find any; when I introspected within, I found the real culprit!!”

This indeed is the real Truth! WE search for mistakes all around us; but, we forget to search within ourselves; the day we start looking within, our search will surely be over N out!!!

In the same vein, we look for GOD all around us except ourselves. WE look for without rather than WITHIN. The day we start searching for HIM within, WE are sure to ‘Find’ GOD..!

Public Dealing APATHY n Lackadaisical ATTITUDE

There is no gainsaying the fact that in India, public dealing is largely apathetic, lackadaisical and devoid of any human values whatsoever! It is just ‘going thru the motions’ with no real intent of helping the public at large, who on their part, also try to gain, at times, undue advantage of any vantage feelings shown to them.

But, largely, it’s our bankrupt bureaucracy and official machinery at fault. They almost behave as if they are not carrying on with their “bounden duty” but doing a ‘huge favor’ to the general public. May be, the tradition has carried on from the British times. But, it’s now time to change it for the better!

It must be made accountable for its actions with some penalty imposed on the erring official along with speedy justice being meted out to the person relating to whom the action was carried out. Else, this buck will run amok eating everything n everyone with such instances beginning to find their way even into the private sector, albeit, not to that extent, as of now.

But, if unchecked, this menace will outgrow each n every one!!

Prologue Since times immemorial, people have fallen in love irrespective of caste, religion or territorial boundaries. They might have had to pay a heavy price for this but in the process they have made love immortal. Love is such a sweet and nice feeling, truly nectarine and divine!

More recently, the inter caste love marriage trend in India has been on the increase. Widespread education along with the “proliferation of professions through the castes” has rendered the Caste System less relevant than before. And, this increasing trend is likely to continue in spite of the multifarious problems involved. Such problems include custom & belief systems, culture & language differences, contrasting living styles, matters of faith, even dietary contrasts. August was fine. I spent time with mom & dad & there were moments. I made pants w mom, mom gave me a nice bob cut, i went to wegmans to eat in the cafeteria w mom sometimes & adele at other times, i passed my drivers test & got my wisdom teeth pulled out, & i did not work on my book. I moved into college & nneka had a lot of friend drama and i felt like am imposter in the irc bc black women should be free in this space without me watching but also they believe in many of the evil col*mbia things i cant think good things abt. I began classes & had a scare when i wasn’t supposed to sign up for my grad student class but i interviewed during office hours & it was fine. i now think honestly i am one of the better students but the class is kinda a mess. so are my other classes. surprisingly cc is very good & i enjoy my prof.

September was less fine but we did it. aside from classes, i am feeling more and less in tough w my femininity. like i present with longer hair now but feel like my body is really awful for ppl to interpret still, and is end up wearing a hat every other day. Mom called me last night & told me she was back from china, my grandparents are fine for now probly, and jimmie/alice’s dad d*ed. I don’t rly know how to process this information but jimmie liked my instagram post last night. that’s so awful.

Some good memories:

- first day of lion dance practice i sweat so much & emma has such good skin they just glow on low plaza under the soft night lamps & i actually had a lot of fun moving around & being around emma & afterward we all went to get free gong cha & i got a mango slush w basil seeds bc i was like wow it’s paid for try smth fancy & i went to emilys woodbridge apt & Claire was there making pottery & emma was talking to them when i walked in & it was so pleasant to see them together and then emma also came to do pottery & we all sat together in claires big bedroom/living room at night & talked & i felt like a part of a rly nice warm family even tho everyone else is not that nice and warm feeling abt each other to some numbed extent bc of crushes & bad behavior & etc but i rly had such a good night

- i went to the ny art book fair with grace & we met emma there & looked at zines & claire came later & i was like wow these ppl who i don’t even know very well took time out of their day to b with me & then emma & i took the train back & i talked to emma abt anarchy & chinese folktales & daoism on the train ride back & also mia mingus on leaving evidence at some point but yea i rly liked sharing time with them on the ride back then i took a nap i shouldn’t have taken & left late to go to my first day of tutoring & ended up being 15 mins late bc the one train goes express on weekends but i stayed for 30 mins extra & got paid 100 for an hr!! i was standing in the elevator with two 50 dollar bills in my hand like??? what??? this is my life? rich ppl just have money to do whatever with ?????? also side note yesterday i taught her how to draw a circle given a center & radius without plotting a bunch of points from solving the equation 💩

- after the wow information session i went back home with em & we cooked noodles together & em told their roommates that there were so many leaks in the kitchen & they all came and gathered around a bundle of leeks on the cutting board & the wow info session had such good black sesame moon cakes bc they were home made & smth abt the freshness just makes them so 香 but yea it was so nice to talk to em & share some hugs & food & it rly reminded me of those times last yr when em randomly invited me over to eat noodles & take care of me & tbh that’s the only non-parent love that feels so real that i can cry

- today was so awful bc it’s a Tuesday & that means i have printmaking from 10-4 & then chinese avant-garde 4-6 plus mei from wow could only call me at 1 today out of all the times this week so i spent my lunch break doing that & another stressful thing was my oral presentation in the grad student class that i was rly not prepared for. so i wake up around 8:30 & try to finish the reading i want to present abt bc i wanna review & don’t come close to finishing & head off to class & i had spent 3 hrs in the print show the previous day preparing materials for this class that we didn’t even use so im making a stupid book & it’s so stupid & i eat a few of my dumplings i fried in the 10 mins before class started & can’t eat them bc i feel watched & pressure to read & pressure abt how i don’t know anything abt what to do in this art class & ppl helping always feels like ppl telling me I’m stupid & also im just feeling bad in my body. so i unsuccessfully make 1 book after two attempts & then it’s 11:30 & i give up & just sit down to read & restless reading & then i go to lunch meaning i come to my room to read & at this point im feeling suuper queasy like dry mouth, throat closing up, feeling like i wanna throw up so i do & there isn’t rly much to throw up & it’s 12:59 & i think abt throwing up some more but i rush to drink water instead & the call comes at 1:03 & i am so cheery & have nothing to say so i just say all the things abt me & then she asks if i have any questions & i talk abt how amazing em is as if that’s an answer but not before telling her u have to go to class so we say bye & i go to class & tomas isn’t there yet even tho he looked me in the eyes earlier in the day & said he wants to meet with all of us for crit & so i ask joanna if we will be learning anything Jew in the afternoon & she says no & she would go if she were sick so i just put my stuff away & go to my room to finish (sorta) reading & type up a script for my presentation & then i tell xinni im leaving class around 2:45 so we go to the heyman center & i finish writing my part of the thing & putting pictures in & she finishes hers & we go to class & our presentation goes very well & lydia helps question ppl for discussion too so it’s not that awkward & i ask lydia abt what is avant-garde if were talking abt capitalists selling colonial modernity & anarchists in the same sentence & she spends the last half our talking abt how movements should resist definitions bc those delineations of boundaries are not conducive to discourse & so class ends & now im shivering bc im sick & i come back to drink some nyquil yay & chat with my ra & then nneka swipes me in to the dining hall but shes w the ra chatting for too long in a line that’s too long so i leave & sit in bed with my food to take a 15 min nap & by some miracle i get up to talk to grace & kyoko abt a workshop for apia-u & then aaa meeting happens & its whatever & i come back to my room- pretty sad day right? but i look at my phone & see Emma has sent me a video out of the blue called i love eggs & it’s just a song saying i love u abt eggs thatturn into superheroes & planes & rainbows & etc & idk if this is a super gay proposal or sorts or just super gay friend things but i think i interpret it as both. Finally i got an email from em saying they would love to welcome me as a wow intern & im sorta guilty bc it somewhat feels like i tricked em into making this happen for me by being pitiful but that’s such an awful thing to think & mostly i am very excited to work with em & see em & go to Chinatown & be tender & goofy & also earn a bit of money?? but yes very very good day.

Way-too-early 2019-20 MLB free-agent rankings

This offseason's free-agent class didn't end up as glamorous as projected a couple of years ago. Yes, we have Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, but Harper isn't coming off a great season. Clayton Kershaw decided to stay with the Dodgers rather than opt out. Andrew McCutchen is no longer an MVP candidate. Josh Donaldson and Andrew Miller are coming off injury-plagued seasons.

Donaldson was the first big signing of the offseason, and as we wait to see what else unfolds, it's always important to note next year's free agents because that can influence what a team does now and how it spends its money. Players in their final year also are potential trade bait -- either in the offseason or during the season.

So keep this in your back pocket -- my top-30 free agents for the 2019-20 offseason (the player's seasonal age for 2020 is included in parentheses):

1. Nolan Arenado, Colorado Rockies (29)

2018 stats: .297/.374/.561, 38 HR, 5.6 WAR

The Rockies would obviously love to extend their franchise player, a six-time Gold Glove winner who has finished eighth, fifth, fourth and third in the MVP balloting the past four seasons. If the season begins with Arenado unsigned, the odds are he hits free agency -- and once that happens, the player almost always signs with a new team. Arenado, however, probably will want to wait to see what Harper and Machado get in free agency before he talks extension. The Rockies aren't going to trade him, but his situation complicates their offseason: Do they try to improve the team for one last run with Arenado without knowing whether he'll be on the roster beyond 2019?

Trade bait? Unlikely, unless the Rockies fall out of the race in July.

2. Gerrit Cole, Houston Astros (29)

2018 stats: 15-5, 2.88 ERA, 200.1 IP, 276 SO, 5.3 WAR

Cole went to the Astros, started throwing his four-seam fastball up in the zone more often and had the season everyone dreamed he could put together after the Pirates drafted him No. 1 overall in 2011. He fanned 34.5 percent of the batters he faced -- the eighth-highest single-season rate for a starter in major league history -- and if he does that again, he could be looking at a $200 million-plus deal.

Trade bait? No.

3. Chris Sale, Boston Red Sox (31)

2018 stats: 12-4, 2.11 ERA, 158 IP, 237 SO, 6.9 WAR

I rate Cole ahead of Sale because he's two years younger and Sale's shoulder problems that sidelined him much of the final two months of 2018 are a concern heading into 2019. The Red Sox would love to extend Sale, but they also need to find out if he's healthy before making a large commitment, so he probably heads into the 2019-20 offseason as a free agent.

Trade bait? No.

4. Xander Bogaerts, Boston Red Sox (27)

2018 stats: .288/.360/.522, 23 HR, 3.8 WAR

The Red Sox could have four impact free agents after the 2019 season if J.D. Martinez opts out, and you could argue that re-signing Bogaerts should be the top priority. No, he's not in the Francisco Lindor or Carlos Correa class, but he'll be reaching free agency at 27, is coming off a 135 OPS+ season and has averaged 3.6 WAR the past four years. His defense took a hit in 2018 (minus-19 defensive runs saved), so the only red flag is that he might have to move off shortstop in a few years.

Trade bait? No.

5. Anthony Rendon, Washington Nationals (30)

2018 stats: .308/.374/.535, 24 HR, 4.2 WAR

Always Late with Katie Nolan is a late-night sports comedy show covering the big (and small) stories of the week. Watch on ESPN+

FanGraphs liked Rendon's season even more than Baseball-Reference did, crediting him with 6.3 WAR, second to Christian Yelich among National League position players. Baseball-Reference WAR totals since 2014, Rendon's first full season with the Nationals:

Rendon: 21.1 Harper: 18.6

Rendon holds a similar edge in FanGraphs WAR. He won't get $300 million because of his age, but he has been the Nationals' best player the past five seasons, not Harper.

Trade bait? Only if the Nationals fall out of the race.

6. J.D. Martinez, Boston Red Sox (32)

2018 stats: .330/.402/.629, 43 HR, 6.4 WAR

If Martinez has another monster season, he'll almost certainly exercise his opt-out clause and forgo the remaining three years and $62.5 million on his contract. Edwin Encarnacion got three years and $60 million from the Indians for his age-34-to-36 seasons, and Martinez is better.

Trade bait? No.

7. Paul Goldschmidt, Arizona Diamondbacks (32)

2018 stats: .290/.389/.533, 33 HR, 5.4 WAR

He hasn't been as good the past three seasons (138 OPS+, 15.9 WAR) as during his 2013-15 peak (162 OPS+, 20.4 WAR), but he was still good enough to finish third and sixth in the MVP balloting the past two seasons. There are some small red flags here: His strikeout rate this year was his highest since his rookie season, and he has gone from 32 steals in 2016 to seven in 2018. He has hit just as well on the road as at home in his career, so changing parks shouldn't be an issue.

Trade bait? Yes, maybe the most likely guy on this list to be dealt (the Cardinals and Astros are possible landing spots).

8. Justin Verlander, Houston Astros (37)

2018 stats: 16-9, 2.52 ERA, 214 IP, 290 SO, 6.2 WAR

If you didn't know his age, you'd be willing to give Verlander a long-term deal at a mega-millions amount. He has finished second, fifth and second in the past three Cy Young votes and just recorded a career-high 290 strikeouts. He'll be 37 in 2020, but he has posted 30 starts and 200 innings every season of his career except 2015.

Trade bait? No.

9. Josh Donaldson, Atlanta Braves (34)

2018 stats: .246/.352/.449, 8 HR, 1.2 WAR

He has already signed a one-year deal with the Braves for $23 million. If he's healthy and productive, he'll get a longer-term deal next offseason even though he'll be 34.

Trade bait? No.

10. Madison Bumgarner, San Francisco Giants (30)

2018 stats: 6-7, 3.26 ERA, 129.1 IP, 109 SO, 2.4 WAR

He could rise much higher or fall even further on this list based on his 2019 performance. He still had a solid ERA in 2018, but his strikeout rate was the lowest since his rookie season, and his swing-and-miss rate is down more than 5 percent from 2015, suggesting an overall decline in stuff.

Trade bait? It might seem anathema to trade Bumgarner, but new GM Farhan Zaidi doesn't have the emotional ties to the franchise. A trade is possible, although the return might not be enough to warrant one.

11. Didi Gregorius, New York Yankees (30)

2018 stats: .268/.335/.494, 27 HR, 4.2 WAR

Bryce Harper and Manny Machado clearly are at the head of the class, but there are plenty of big names available beyond the star duo.

He couldn't cut it at Yankee Stadium. But insiders believe the Bombers will find a decent deal for the right-hander this winter.

He'll miss at least the first half of 2019 after Tommy John surgery. He has topped 20 home runs three seasons in a row, and he's a better defensive shortstop than Bogaerts. He has been helped by Yankee Stadium -- 42 of his 72 home runs the past three seasons have come at home -- and he'll hit free agency at an age when many shortstops start to lose their range.

Trade bait? Not while he's injured. He's expected to earn about $12.4 million in arbitration (via MLB Trade Rumors), and there's a chance the Yankees decide to nontender him. (The deadline to offer players a 2019 contract is Friday.)

12. Zack Wheeler, New York Mets (30)

2018 stats: 12-7, 3.31 ERA, 182.1 IP, 179 SO, 3.9 WAR

After missing two full seasons and struggling with a 5.21 ERA in 2017, Wheeler finished strong in 2018 with a 1.68 ERA over his final 11 starts. He always has had premium stuff and averaged 96.5 mph with his fastball, but he threw more strikes than ever in that stretch. If he does it again, he'll get a handsome reward.

Trade bait? The rumors are swirling around Noah Syndergaard, but those might be media-created fetishes more than anything. Wheeler certainly becomes trade bait at the July deadline if the Mets haven't signed him and they're out of the race.

13. Marcell Ozuna, St. Louis Cardinals (29)

2018 stats: .280/.325/.433, 23 HR, 2.9 WAR

Who is the real Ozuna? He had a monster first half in 2016 but struggled in the second half. He had a huge 2017, hitting .312/.376/.548 with 37 home runs. Traded to the Cardinals, his slugging percentage fell off 125 points in 2018 as he had only 40 extra-base hits in 582 at-bats. A nagging shoulder injury certainly might have affected his production -- he finally received a cortisone injection in late August, and had a short stint on the DL. His 2019 season will determine what type of long-term offers he'll get, but he'll be an interesting gamble regardless. While he's a good defensive left fielder right now, he's not particularly fast, he doesn't walk much (career .329 OBP) and he's topped 23 home runs only once.

Trade bait? No. The Cardinals are looking to add, not subtract.

14. Rick Porcello, Boston Red Sox (31)

2018 stats: 17-7, 4.28 ERA, 191.1 IP, 190 SO, 3.1 WAR

He has been extremely durable, and he's no longer just the groundball specialist he was with the Tigers. Nothing too fancy here, but he projects as a dependable mid-rotation starter.

Trade bait? No.

15. Aaron Hicks, New York Yankees (30)

2018 stats: .248/.366/.467, 27 HR, 4.7 WAR

The former first-round pick has blossomed with the Yankees after failing to break through with the Twins, and I could be underrating him here, given his power numbers and walk rate (90 walks). His defensive metrics were outstanding in 2017 but less so in 2018 (minus-3 DRS), and he's kind of a thick-bodied guy, so I'm thinking he moves to right field in his early 30s.

Trade bait? No.

16. Miles Mikolas, St. Louis Cardinals (31)

2018 stats: 18-4, 2.83 ERA, 200.2 IP, 146 SO, 4.1 WAR

The command specialist who discovered himself in Japan signed with the Cardinals and led the NL with 18 wins and a sub-3.00 ERA. Like all pitchers who don't throw hard, he'll have to prove he can do it again, and the low strikeout rate suggests he'll be hard-pressed to match that 2.83 ERA.

Trade bait? No.

17. Scooter Gennett, Cincinnati Reds (30)

2018 stats: .310/.357/.490, 23 HR, 4.2 WAR

That's two good seasons in a row at the plate, and he hit better on the road in 2018, so the home run numbers aren't all park-inflated. He doesn't walk much, and he's limited to second base on defense, where he's not exactly a Gold Glove candidate, so all his value resides in his ability to keep hitting.

Trade bait? Yes. The Reds have prospect Nick Senzel on the cusp of the majors. The trouble is Gennett's trade value is limited because there is a glut of second basemen in free agency (Jed Lowrie, Daniel Murphy, DJ LeMahieu, Brian Dozier, Ian Kinsler, Josh Harrison, Asdrubal Cabrera). With Gregorius injured, the Yankees could be interested, with Gleyber Torres sliding over to shortstop.

18. Yasiel Puig, Los Angeles Dodgers (29)

2018 stats: .267/.327/.494, 23 HR, 2.7 WAR

More flash than substance, Puig was better at 22 and 23 (9.8 WAR) than he has been at 26 and 27 (6.4 WAR). He's very good in right field, but for whatever reason has struggled two years in a row against lefties (.197/.292/.320).

Trade bait? Yes. Trade Puig to clear room for Harper?

19. Khris Davis, Oakland Athletics (32)

2018 stats: .247/.326/.549, 48 HR, 2.9 WAR

Davis is a one-dimensional slugger who is limited to DH, but at least he's really good at it, with three straight 40-homer seasons and an MLB-best 48 in 2018. He also has hit exactly .247 four straight seasons, which is maybe the greatest baseball oddity of all time. How about a two-year contract for $24.7 million? (He'll get a lot more than that if he hits 40 again.)

Trade bait? No, unless the A's are struggling at the July deadline.

20. Francisco Cervelli, Pittsburgh Pirates (34)

2018 stats: .259/.378/.431, 12 HR, 2.6 WAR

He has a .368 OBP in his four seasons with the Pirates and even added a little power for the first time. He even had his best season throwing out runners (39 percent vs. a career rate of 23 percent). Nothing about him blows you away, but about 25 teams could use him behind the plate.

Trade bait? Not yet. But the Pirates have one of the best backups in the league in Elias Diaz, so Cervelli could be available in July.

21. Dellin Betances, New York Yankees (32)

2018 stats: 4-6, 2.70 ERA, 66.2 IP, 115 SO, 1.7 WAR

He's older than you might think since it took him so long to reach the majors, but the four-time All-Star is still one of the most intimidating relievers in the majors with his size, fastball and occasional pitch that gets away (he has hit 16 batters the past two seasons). The control problems that plagued him down the stretch in 2017 weren't an issue in 2018, however, and he dominated with 15.5 K's per nine. Even given his age, he seems to be a safe bet to remain productive on a multiyear contract.

Trade bait? No.

22. Cole Hamels, Chicago Cubs (36)

2018 stats: 9-12, 3.78 ERA, 190.2 IP, 188 SO, 3.7 WAR

He'll be on the wrong side of 35 when he hits free agency, but he has made 30 starts every season since 2008, except 2017, when he had only 24 because of an oblique injury. His strikeout rate jumped back up in 2018 after a big dip in 2017 (maybe related to the injury), and he was extremely homer-prone with the Rangers before posting a 2.36 ERA with the Cubs (he also hit 19 batters). Still, he's the type of veteran presence clubs love to have, and while he's on the downturn, he hasn't had a bad season yet.

Trade bait? No.

23. Jonathan Schoop, Milwaukee Brewers (28)

2018 stats: .233/.266/.416, 21 HR, 1.4 WAR

As the offseason gets rolling, we're taking a look at the biggest question facing every team. AL East | NL East | AL West NL West | AL Central | NL Central

So far, it has been one big season (5.2 WAR in 2017) and a whole lot of meh. He's solid at second base but not good enough that he's helping much with a .266 OBP. As a free agent, he'll be young enough to attract some interest if he bounces back, but the 2017 season looks more like a fluke to me.

Trade bait: Not much trade value after his poor season, although it will be interesting to see if the Brewers nontender him and find a more reliable second baseman via trade (how about Gennett?) or free agency.

24. Jhoulys Chacin, Milwaukee Brewers (32)

2018 stats: 15-8, 3.50 ERA, 192.1 IP, 156 SO, 2.0 WAR

He has had two solid years in a row, and while the peripheral numbers aren't exciting (the walks are a little high, the strikeouts a little low), his slider has become a big weapon. He projects as a solid back-end starter for a few more years if he stays healthy.

Trade bait? Not with the Brewers looking to defend their NL Central title.

25. Nicholas Castellanos, Detroit Tigers (28)

2018 stats: .298/.354/.500, 23 HR, 2.9 WAR

He was a bad third baseman and now is a bad right fielder, so all his value is with the bat. He won't be an old free agent, however, so there should interest from AL teams who want to use him primarily as a DH. The strikeout-to-walk ratio (151 to 49) is a little disconcerting. I'd be wary about a heavy investment here.
