Leona - Mint Naps

Day 29 of Fluffcember 2024 Prompt: Mint (Fluffcember) Rating: Teen Characters: Leona, Yuu, Jack Pairing: Leona/Yuu

“He’s just taking a nap like usual.” 

The words sounded like they were echoing from the far end of a tunnel, but Leona heard them all the same. He cracked open a single eye. The bright light momentarily blinded him, and he blinked until the two figures standing above him came into focus. A lazy smile stretched his cheeks. “Good boy, Jack. You brought the prefect back with you.” 

Jack coughed into his fist. Leona flicked his tail when Jack ignored him. “See what I mean? Something’s not...right, and I can’t find Ruggie anywhere.” 

“He’s probably skipped campus and found a part-time gig somewhere else on the island,” Yuu said. She stepped over Leona’s outstretched arm. Leona flexed his hand. “How long has he been like this?” 

Jack shrugged and scratched the back of his head. “No idea. The guys say he’s been out of the dorm all day, but I just found him half an hour ago. I had to shake him a couple of times to wake him up.” 

Yuu hummed and leaned over Leona. Leona was distracted by the way the light bounced off the strands of hair that had escaped from behind her ear. Her hair looked extremely shiny today. He flicked his tail towards her. 

“Have you ever seen his pupils this big?” Yuu leaned down closer. Every muscle in Leona’s body tensed. “Honestly? I’m confused why you came to get me instead of going to the infirmary.” 

“Ramshackle Dorm was closer,” Jack argued. His voice sounded like it was deeper in the tunnel now, but that could have been because Leona was so focused on the single strand of hair fluttering across Yuu’s forehead. “And I wanted a second opinion.” 

“My second opinion is you should’ve taken him to the infirmary.” Jack grunted. Yuu placed her hands on her knees as she leaned closer to Leona. She squinted at him. “Leona doesn’t normally nap in this part of the gardens, right? Grim’s been really interested in this area too. He’s been coming back to the dorm late acting the same as Leona with these little plants stuck in his fur...” 

Leona struck when Yuu reached down to touch his hair. He grabbed her forearm and twisted his torso. She landed beside him with a breathless grunt. Leona used one arm to anchor her to the ground. With the other hand, he started batting at her hair. 

“What the...” 

“I knew it!” Yuu grabbed Leona’s forearm and attempted to free herself. Her efforts only prompted a low chuckle from Leona. “Why does the Science Club keep planting catnip in the Botanical Garden?” 

“Catnip?” Jack slowly repeated. Leona lazily batted at Yuu’s hand until she started batting back. “I guess that explains the weird giggling. He’ll be fine after a few more minutes. Lucius usually calms down after an hour when someone gives him catnip.” 

“Who’s giving Lucius catnip? Does Professor Trein know?” 

“Uh...” 

Leona sighed. He grew bored of his swatting match with Yuu and repositioned her to function as a pillow. His ear flicked when she hissed. “You two talk too much. Go make a ruckus somewhere else.” 

“I can’t with you using me as a pillow!” 

Leona’s mouth twitched into a smirk. “Guess you’ll suffer until the catnip wears off.” 

“Until the—you lazy lion! You planned this whole thing. Jack! Where do you think you’re going?” 

“Sorry, Yuu! Leona was demanding I bring you to him, so I did.” 

“You’re an accessory to kidnapping!” 

Leona missed whatever poor excuse Jack gave Yuu, but he chuckled all the same. “It’s no use. The good puppy is loyal to his dorm.” 

“You and Ruggie are corrupting him.” 

“If you really wanted to get free, you’d be fighting a lot harder.” 

Yuu went still under him and didn’t immediately argue against his statement. Leona’s smirk was only broken by a yawn. He shifted into a more comfortable position. Yuu didn’t fight him when he propped his head on her shoulder. The sharp scent of the catnip filled his nose, and a minty aftertaste sat on the back of his tongue. He could already feel the side effects of the plant naturally fading. 

Leona felt more than heard a silent huff from Yuu. “I’m reporting the Science Club to Professor Crewel.” 

“I’ve heard catnip tea has become popular in Heartslabyul.” 

“You want me to believe Trey is behind all of this?” 

“You’d be surprised by how underhanded Clover really is. The whole big brother act is just a coverup.” 

“I’d sooner believe you were paying off the Science Club to keep growing patches of catnip.” 

Leona softly chuckled and drifted into his nap when Yuu fell silent. When he woke an hour later, the effects of the catnip had fully worn off, and Yuu was quietly snoring next to him.

i dunno man. i'm writing this stuff and i look at it and go "i feel like i'm repeating sentiments here. like all these sentences shouldn't be the same place. i'm packing too much detail or action between dialogue and it just shouldn't be like this."

but then i ask my brain, what's the alternative? what other way can this work look like? and it just doesn't turn out anything better. i don't like taking things out.

i do think i can get better at like. not breaking up dialogue with tags CONSTANTLY and not putting actions between dialogue. god i wish i could write dialogue that flowed more.

but maybe sometimes i have to admit. i'm not that good a writer. or, i dunno, maybe that's just not my style. but like idk sometimes i feel like i just don't have a style at all. like i have plots, i have ideas, i have the same five words i re-use over and over sfjlhdgffg but style, who knows

anyways i'm just rambling now when really i should be writing. i've had this gripe with my own writing for a long time now but i still enjoy it so don't feel too bad for me jksdghdfg every writer has one

Since my AU takes place a few years after the events in the actual game, I like to portray certain characters’ endings in character design rather than saying all the endings are canon.

For example, (cw: sh) I like the choice of giving Arcade a big scar across his abdomen to reference his s*icide ending

Okay, I trust you as a source for all things Fire Emblem - can you please tell me if Fire Emblem Engage is worth getting? It's a lot of money, and I've seen a real mixed reception for it. I've read reviews that call it uninspired and shallow, storywise, and that some characters are difficult to enjoy. Is it actually worth it, or am I better off just replaying Fates? I am TORN over here.

SO! Good news in brief: if you liked Fates I'm fairly certain that you've got a good chance of liking Engage. I honestly see Engage as Fates 2 with a much better focus on what it wants to be and do! In fact if I HAD to pick a previous entry for fair comparison/vibe similarities, I'd pick Fates, maybe Sacred Stones (though I've yet to finish that one).

Engage is right now my favorite entry of the series.

MORE DETAILED ANSWER UNDER THE CUT (I have only played thru once on normal + casual as of writing)

I still maintain it's a good game and worth it, but you HAVE to be open-hearted about it. It's going to be silly. It's going to be hammy and subtle as a sledgehammer. It will even say the most cringe ass shit with it's whole heart. It's just about the farthest from 3H you can get on the fire emblem scale to the point you could have it sitting next to Kingdom Hearts and I, personally, love that for it, but feel like comparing it to 3H's darker tones is the thing most negative reviewers fall prey to.

Is it simple? Yeah. Absolutely. Terribly predictable, even. Is it heartfelt? YES! ABSOLUTELY! Engage has no time for "wow that was cheesy" because it LOVES cheese and it wants you to know that LOVE IS THE MOST POWERFUL THING EVER. It knows it's running a trite and cliched story and it doesn't care about that so much as trying to hit its notes with just the right vibe- and I argue it does a majority of the time, but can concede some things are rather silly. It's full steam ahead with the power of love and friendship and it does that with about as much reverence as a Sat. A.M. cartoon. A good Sat. A.M. cartoon that you're still thinking of years down the line that was a formative childhood joy.

And it's not about romantic love, actually! Hardly at all! There's a lot more focus on familial and platonic love than romance!! There are explicit "I love you"s regarding family bonds and multiple sibling relationships that make it clear they would do everything for their family. The only romantic aspect is whoever you choose to have Alear S-Rank (the game calls it a ring rank for Reasons but its essentially an S-Rank), and everyone else's supports end at A. Even then there's room in a fair number of Alear's S-Ranks to get interpreted as Really Good Friends, as the focus is not on "I Love You" but moreso the fact Alear and the blorbo in question have a deep, deep bond (though there are S-Ranks that are romantic-tinted and some who will explicitly say they love Alear, and regardless of gender picked! wow! diversity win!). If you were looking for pairing up your sexy chess pieces and getting paired endings, though, there'll be a bit left to be desired.

Again if you like Fates, or Kingdom Hearts, or stories that are cheesy, simple, cliched, but heartfelt, you're going to like this one. The cast is wonderful, and the story has some surprisingly good emotional beats. Oh, and also some of the FUNNIEST supports I have seen. Ever.

Alear in particular has become my favorite lord of the series, just barely scooting ahead of Corrin by virtue of having a more solid characterization and arc that Fates didn't quite let Corrin have. Which, yes, you can rename Alear and give them their own birthday, but there is NO question that Alear is their own character; hats off to Laura Stahl and Brandon McInnis for bringing stellar performances that are essential to the character. Frankly hats off in general to the voice cast as a whole they really bring a charm to the game that cannot be ignored.

I will say that supports are pretty hard to grind out, though, requiring units to be adjacent, and the leveling curve leaves a lot of... wonkiness? It's VERY easy with the rate of receiving new units + leveling funk to have units fall behind, or your army to feel underleveled, if you're like me and mostly skip the side skirmishes (bad gamer, I know). I hear the skirmishes are also kind of wonky and scaled to Alear's level which. Can Be A Problem if you're trying to level or support grind weaker units. Though I will say that playing Normal + Casual playing straight through the main story, while it occasionally made me sweat, it did not make me have to completely redo a map (or, if it did, it was probably only once or twice and I've simply forgotten about the inconvenience). Just made unlocking supports irksome as units fell off and/or made it hard to keep some characters off the bench.

There's also an OBSCENE amount of freedom in what you can do with your units. Go crazy go stupid try not to die. Resource management can get tricky, there's not quite enough gold or bond points to do everything, but you can do a lot of stuff, especially if you find a favorite to focus in on. As for the Engage mechanic: very powerful, but not to the point of sapping all the challenge out of things, and fairly balanced. The Break mechanic introduced I think is a great addition to the weapon triangle mechanics and adds a nicer layer of consideration to unit placement + weapon diversity in your army than before.

Also, if you're worried Engage overly relies on it's intent as an anniversary celebration, don't! Engage still is doing its own thing, and moreso uses references to past entries as spice or flourishes of color. They add some fun easter eggs and flavoring to the story, but it doesn't rely on the emblems or any throwbacks to tell the story it's trying to tell. Are Firene and Brodia a 1:1 for Zofia and Rigel? Yeah! Probably on purpose! They literally got the guy who voices Duma in FEH to do King Morion! Do you need to know anything about Shadows of Valentia to appreciate that? Nope! Just nice to know. Corrin's ring is found in a Northern Fortress, to further help illuminate the cute nods involved.

If you're on the fence, totally get that, especially since dropping 60$ on a game in this economy- ~90$ if you wanna add DLC -is a lot of money to ask for. But I've thoroughly enjoyed what Engage has to offer, and currently am hopping along through playthrough #2 and trying to tell myself to S-Rank someone who isn't Alcryst (I will probably S-Rank Alcryst again). I'd suggest looking into the first few eps of a playthrough if you're still not quite sure, and, frankly, imo there's no shame in just purely enjoying it from a "watched a playthrough" perspective, if you have to.

What if that is how Lizzie was born?

Someone, or even Diana, says that she has a daughter while holding the lasso and because she's holding it the lie becomes 'truth'.

It would also make sense why she would even keep the lasso of lies as maybe she needs to hold it to stay tethered to reality, to stay alive. Especially since it's wrapped around her more like an accessory than equipment.

And also why she feels so disconnected from her 'mother' Diana, because Diana is a woman of truth and she was born of lies.

Plus this would also make it so Diana doesn't have to 'spend time' pregnant in the world of comics, people will believe she had already been pregnant, and also do away with any questions of who Lizzie's dad is (unless she makes the lie while holding the rope with someone, or the 'King of America' created her to burden Diana and so he is technically her father).

I hate that I'm thinking of this. I blame all the artists I like announcing their own variant covers for the Trinity special dropping in 2024. Shows how much DC really wants this to be a success + want to sell as many as possible using variant covers to point to as proof of concept (like they're doing with the WW series rn - why wait until NOW for Jim Lee to do the final piece of the triptych).

How would Silver deal with a robot designed to defeat him in the same vein Omega did with Shadow in 06?

Hmm, would that have to mean he was on good terms with the robot first before it got reprogrammed to capture him? I'm actually wondering just how Omega managed to defeat and capture Shadow... I know Omega was made specifically by Eggman to keep Shadow contained, but Shadow is the Ultimate Lifeform and insanely strong on top. In a battle between them, I am not sure if Omega can come out as victor. Was that ever touched upon in '06?

That being said, if there's a robot that can defeat Shadow, I think it's not impossible to create one that can defeat Silver. I figure it'd be smart of its creator to make one that directly plays into Silver's PK, either through no-selling or countering it, as that is Silver's main mode of attack in most games. As for what Silver would think of it, I do think he'll take the threat seriously once he sees that this robot can absolutely have a victory over him. For all his black-and-white thinking, I figure even Silver knows that if he's defeated and captured, that is it for the safety of the future. It's not something I can imagine he's willing to risk! Thus, retreating from the battle might be his best choice, though I doubt he'll be happy with that. But better to live to fight another day, I do suppose!
