20 questions for fic writers
Thanks for the tag @lindirs-gaze!
1. how many works do you have on ao3?
78
2. what’s your total ao3 word count?
1,216,174
3. what fandoms do you write for?
My current hyperfixation is The Untamed/Modao Zushi, but I write for whatever. I've got a lot of one shots for properties I think are neat like Welcome to Nightvale or Parks and Rec.
4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
A Passion for Mushrooms, Mountain Flowers, The Seedling, Family's Just Another Word for Something Left To Lose, and In Town for the Wedding. Four in Hobbit/LotR fandom and one Naruto.
5. do you respond to comments? why or why not?
I really try to. I appreciate feedback so much. When I'm in a funk it really brightens my mood, so I want to respond and build community with readers not just drop a story. And sometimes I go months without checking my inbox which makes me feel awkward about replying. It's a mix.
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Interestingly, Family's Just Another Word For Something Left To Lose, according to some readers. It's ambiguous at the end and *a lot* of people think Kakashi dies, which is not at all my intent. I was paralleling the same scene with Iruka in the anime, and Iruka survives. It did not occur to me that the ambiguity would be what so many people took away.
The one I wrote that's intentionally angsty at the end is all i hear is your gear, which has no happy intentions and is all just about Crowley being a demon in hell.
7. what’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
So much of my stuff is romance with a traditional HEA ending, but weirdly the ending I like most is A Spy in the Shire. It's a happy ending for this one oc dwarf, but in the broader context of the series I think it both emphasizes the Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies AU happiness as well as justifying the many sacrifices made in canon.
8. do you get hate on any fics?
yeah for sure. And I am sensitive about it. If it hits me when I'm already feeling low, I usually have to stay away from fandom spaces for a while and I often lose the motivation to write at all. It sucks. Some of it I can brush off more easily, like the Iruka/Kakashi shippers who come onto my fic to make fun of the way Mighty Guy looks and try to pick a fight. They are likely children and I just don't engage. But the people who criticize my writing or a specific story for reasons they are happy to detail can be harder to ignore.
This is of course a very different thing than the helpful folks who point out that I've once again mixed up desert and dessert. Y'all are lovely and I appreciate the help.
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?
Yes, as the mood strikes. ...the kind I'm in the mood for? Almost always romantic stuff between a major pairing.
10. do you write crossovers? what’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Listen. Ron Swanson and Wolverine would be very good friends, actually. My Parks and Rec / X-men crossover is not crazy.
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge.
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! One of my Naruto fics is available in Chinese and two of my Modao Zushi stories can be read in Russian. As I speak neither language, I can only assume the translators did an awesome job of making my writing smarter, funnier, and sexier than it is in English.
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, but I find the idea of collaborating interesting.
14. what’s your all time favorite ship?
This is not how my brain works. I pretty much constantly have a Current Obsession and then pairings I still enjoy. Right now, Wangxian invented love, but I'll always enjoy revisiting a certain romance involving Mister Spock or the Leverage Pretzels and Beer OT3.
15. what’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I desperately want to finish my Zombie Criminal Minds series, particularly because being able to revisit it will mark the end of my pandemic / outbreak related brain gremlins.
16. what are your writing strengths?
speling
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
I'd like to do more with humor. I feel like I frequently manage to provoke a sensible chuckle, but I've read fics that make me crack up. Someday, I'd like to write a really Terry Pratchett style laugh-a-minute story.
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Sometimes you gotta do it, because it's in keeping with the canon, but it's always best to do sparingly. If it's longer than a greeting or an honorific, I like to translate directly within the narrative or use a footnote.
19. first fandom you wrote for?
Slayers. Yes, I was that anime kid in high school.
20. favorite fic you’ve written?
My favorite child? Well, I've never really cared for Pit Stop...
I suppose, back against a wall, I enjoy the world building in None So Blind. We just don't spend enough time in dwarven spaces that aren't complete ruins in the canon. Coupled with thoughts on fantasy accessibility and the classic trope of tripping a romantic lead into a pile of literal pig shit, I just like it. Good work, 2018!me.
If you'd like to play, please pretend I tagged you! For the meme, I'll invite @youhideastar, @primtheamazing, and @sunshine304

Writer 20 Questions
seen via @findswoman!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
58
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
177,314
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Dragon Age, fairy tale retellings, and one fic each for Sherlock Holmes and Batman
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
so Fade to Black and Fade to Black and Back, my two multi-chapter smut series for Star Wars Rebels, are I guess going to be my enduring fandom legacy lol. 637 kudos for the first and 452 for the second.
After that it's...more smut, but Talk About It is Dragon Age smut, and I guess my most popular stand-alone story at 399 kudos.
Then it's back to Star Wars Rebels, but Wedding Dance (377 kudos) is a gen fic, so that's my most popular non-smut piece. Braided at 320 kudos is another explicit one.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I always mean to, but sometimes when a bunch come in at once I get overwhelmed. I try and go back and respond to unanswered comments every time I revisit an old fic. Just this week I answered a couple that were seven years old *wince*. It's never too late, right?
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
That's Scenes From Rivendell, no question. I can still make myself cry re-reading that fic. Poor Celebcarch.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Most of them have happy endings really, but I'll say the happiest is Marriage of Convenience, because it was written to provide a happy ending for Alistair and Anora--and that's a pairing that only arises out of some pretty grief-laden circumstances in Dragon Age: Origins. So that's the fic that takes something sad and makes it better.
8. Do you get hate on your fic?
A couple times people have tried to chide me for writing smut, which is like ??? Did you not see ALL the warnings? My sister what were you even doing at the devil's sacrament?
9. Do you write smut?
I doooooo. Yes I do. I don't feel even a little bit bad about it, either.
Sex is important! It's one of the most intense, emotion-rich experiences in life! Especially in a love story--there is nothing that will tell you more about the dynamic between two people than showing how they have sex. And the smut is the part that's usually left out in mainstream media, so it's the big "missing piece" that I am often drawn to want to fill in, creatively.
10. Do you write crossovers?
I haven't, but it would be a fun challenge.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes and it's the best feeling every time. Same for getting podfic made of my stories, or fanart. Just the best.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic?
No, but from rp experiences, I think collabs are absolutely the way to go if possible. It just gets lonely writing on your own, and having a partner keeps the energy up.
14. What‘s your all-time favorite ship?
Space pirate OCs. But excluding my own characters... man, I've had poor luck with my ships, honestly. Looking back through the characters I was really passionate about, canon screwed me one way or another on all of them. I loved Mulder/Scully, Xena/Gabrielle, and Kanan/Hera, and all of their shows went off the rails at the end, so I think about them all with a tinge of sadness now.
It's better to love your own characters, because then at least when you make awful things happen to them, it doesn't come as a surprise.
15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
My only current WIP is a kid's book, and I hope I do finish it!
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialog, and also there's a sort of lyrical register that I can shift into pretty easily (it's a trick I often use for endings).
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Oh, self-indulgence. Things like writing about Kanan's seaglass eyes, or people "growling" their dialog. Cheese, basically. I don't rein myself in too much for fanfic, but in original writing I have to be strict with edits because if I don't force myself to stay spare and restrained, I'm probably getting cheesy with it.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
Tricksy, very tricksy! It's certainly not something you can just hand off to Google Translate. I personally wouldn't do it unless I had some first hand experience with the language, or could consult with native speakers.
Funny story on that, for the space pirate novel, I had a bit where I needed an automated warning looping in various languages. The English was "Warning! Please evacuate the building!"
I asked my Russian friend to give me a translation, and he said I'd need to do some cultural translation first, because the Russian "would be a lot more direct. And they wouldn't say 'please.'" So he gave me Vnimaniye! Vyhodi zdaniye! which apparently translates more directly to "Attention! Exit building."
That's the kind of thing Google Translate can't do for you.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
X-Files. This was Usenet days. Alt.tv.x-files. Many many memories. At one point there was a spinoff group so we could roleplay, but not roleplay being in the show, exactly. Just like all living in a town. It was almost a proto-Tumblr.
I miss Usenet.
20. Favorite fic you’ve ever written?
It might be The Last of the Rebel Angels: that one's not the best, I don't think, but it's the weirdest and most ambitious. I had something to say, and even if I only managed to sketch it out or gesture at it, there's still a really tender place in my heart for that fic.
Any fic writers who'd like to fill out the questions, please consider yourselves tagged!

AO3 Tag Game Tagged by @skypied
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 15
2. What is your total AO3 word count? 154,962 - 68360 from TiHWG (which I did not write) = 86,602. Short fic king.
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
Ducktales primarily, Infinity Train, Luca, Outer Wilds and Trolls World Tour
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
God Only Knows (luca) (1015)
something to do with my hands (infinity train) (692)
Stand By Me (ducktales) (420)
Room to Grow (ducktales) (395)
Albireo (infinity train) (382)
5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not? I try to if someone's left a long or insightful one or asked questions, but if I respond to every comment it feels like comment count padding.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? Apex of a Bad Decision, obviously. It's an Outer Wilds fic and its its relatively canon compliant so *looks into the camera* EDIT: Oh but blue on blue!!! Apex still wins I just think BoB deserves a shout out
7. Do you write crossovers? Nah. I've always liked the idea of a Yokai Watch/Natsume Yuujinchou crossover and once upon a time I could have infodumped the whole imagined lore of it on an unsuspecting fool, but it was never something i was going to write. (it just makes Sense when you think about it)
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic? Not directly, I dont think, but I had made some enemies in the ducktales fandom by virtue of existing so I'm sure people were saying unkind things behind my back.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes, but not religiously. I wrote a Rymin smutfic I quite liked at the time, it was goofy and friendly and full of feelings and music metaphors. I dont think I've revisited it since, so I don't know if I still like it. I may or not be working on a Luberto thing. There's some pretty cringe stuff way back in my livejournal history that no one needs to know about lol. If you know, you know. Idk. I like it with feelings and at least a small amount of plot. If it could be like, a smut mad-lib, where you could punch any old names in and get the same result, I'm probably not vibing super hard with it.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen? I doubt it lol
11. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No. I brainstorm, beta and mass produce OCs for @partly-cloudyskies but I've never cowritten. I think I would probably rather die than either a) relinquish control or b) set myself up for that kind of imposter syndrome crisis. If I wrote with people I considered worse than me it wouldn't be fun and if I wrote with people better than me I'd want to walk into the lake.
12. What’s your all time favorite ship? I move on from stuff pretty regularly I think, my brain is a sponge that can only hold so much water before it needs to be wrung out, I have only two hands and know not how to juggle. But Weblena is probably like....the one. Why else would I have stayed in that fandom for so long enduring the bullshit I did? I have a lot of other lifelong otps I still hold a flame for, but in terms of the ships I made stuff for and really put my heart into, its them.
13. What was the first fandom you wrote for? Meet the Robinsons. Champion of Wilbur Robinson time traveling self-cest circa 2007. Thanks, DayQuil!
14. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? I mean, I guess it has to be God Only Knows, but I think Apex of a Bad Decision is one I'll always be particularly proud of for the world building, pulling a ship out of my ass, and a gut-punch ending.
tagging people? uh idk. @partly-cloudyskies, @neopuff, @the-resurrection-3d @darthvaporwave....if they want!
