[ID: a monochrome comic based on an anonymous 4chan thread on how to cook while avoiding your roommate. The comic features Leone Abbacchio, Pannacotta Fugo, Giorno Giovanna, and Trish Una from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
Image 1: Abbacchio is standing behind a kitchen counter holding a glass of wine in one hand and looking to the side with a slight smile. He says, "hey y'alls, I'm gonna teach you how to cook a crock pot meal in your bedroom because you hate your roommate. Start by cutting up some chicken. I am a bit buzzed, mind y'all..." To the side is a thought bubble showing a smiling, waving Giorno and an arrow reading, "roommate". On the counter is a cutting board with chicken and a knife.
Image 2: A closeup of a dirty cutting board resting in the sink. Text reads, "once you're done, put the cutting board and knife in sink and dont wash just to piss your roommate off".
Image 3: Abbacchio is angrily making his way up the stairs holding a bag in one hand and a plate of chicken in the other. In the stairwell there are multiple pictures of the part 5 squad hanging out together. Through a doorway into the living room we can see Fugo and Giorno sitting on the couch together watching the movie 101 Dalmatians. Giorno is focused on the movie while Fugo is turned to give Abbacchio a dirty look. Text reads, "gather your supplies and head to your bedroom.."
Image 4: The colors in the image are slightly darker implying that the lights are either off or dim in Abbacchio's bedroom. Abbacchio is sitting on his bed with his legs on the floor and his hand resting on his fist. Hes hunched over and looking at the viewer with a pleased expression. There is a crock pot, the plate of chicken, and a small lamp on the bedside table next to him. Text reads, "set up your crock pot in your room if you haven't already..."
Image 5: A closeup of the inside of the crock pot. A huge lump of sour cream, the lid to the sour cream container, and Abbacchio's sour cream covered hand are in the crock pot. Text reads, "try putting the sour cream in without a spoon cuz you forgot to bring one and your roommate is downstairs, so you don't wanna go back out"
Image 6: Trish is standing at the implied entrance to Abbacchio's room, leaning on the door frame with her arms crossed and an amused expression. She says, "i love this so far. You really live this way?"End ID]

Shapeshifter AU - 9
Iwaizumi x f!reader
<< Part 8 | Part 10 >>
Summary: The morning after Iwaizumi found out about shapeshifters. Y/n tries to play it cool. Iwaizumi gets to see into part of her world.
Word count: 3k
Warnings: none, fluff
Genre: sfw (18+ regardless), shapeshifter au, strangers to lovers
a/n: Ahhhh this is so late. The next two parts are almost ready at least. Haha..
Part 9: Walls Will Fall
Y/n woke up in her bed at home, alone as usual. Not long after her and Iwaizumi’s shapeshifter discussion, she had to head home to get ready for work later that morning. She had today off though, so she could clear her head from yesterday’s events, and she hoped to hear from Iwaizumi. He had texted her once that evening after he got home from his own job, not that he’d planned to come over. He still didn’t know exactly where she lived anyway. Regardless, he normally says more even if he doesn’t seem to text much. She hoped he wasn’t scared off.
>> To ‘zumi’: “good morning~”
She immediately cursed herself realizing she majorly slept in. It’s far from morning now. She stretched while sitting in bed for a moment before heading to her master bathroom. Her phone chimed as she stepped foot on the tiled floor, so she ran back to grab the phone she had left behind before heading to do her morning routine. She checked her notifications while grabbing an elastic to push any baby hairs out of her face. He texted back already. She sighed in relief; having wondered if he’d answer at all.
>> From ‘zumi’: “morning? Dont tell me you just woke up”
>> From ‘zumi’: “y/n it’s 1pm”
She smiled to herself. At least she didn’t get a one word reply. He can’t be completely avoiding her then, right?
>> To ‘zumi’: “course not i meant afternoon lol”
>> From ‘zumi’: “you totally just woke up”
She admitted defeat in silence and headed for the shower. During her shower and the rest of her morning ritual, she heard several dings from her phone but ignored them.
Exiting the en suite, she tossed her phone onto the bed before walking to the kitchen completely naked. The joys of living alone. She grabbed a water bottle from her fridge and checked the cat’s bowls before returning to her bed, water in hand.
She swapped the bottle for her phone, plopping down on the foot of the bed with a light bounce. There were various app notifications that she ignored and texts from a few friends, which she also ignored. For now. She’s not a bad friend for that, right?
But below her friends’ texts was another text from Iwaizumi, and she clicked it. She’s definitely going to reply to her other two friends very soon.
>> From ‘zumi’: “no reply makes it sound like I was right”
>> To ‘zumi’: “maybe I was busy all morning”
>> From ‘zumi’: “I thought you had the day off”
>> To ‘zumi’: “Nope was definitely busy and I’m definitely being productive”
>> From ‘zumi’: “prove it”
She paused. She’s pretty sure he’s expecting a pic. At least if she was texting Mizuki or another friend that would be more or less a demand for a selfie to prove what she’s actually doing. But not only would that prove she lied, she still hadn’t picked out clothes to wear.
Her cat suddenly jumped onto her bed and started head butting her. “Yeah yeah, breakfast. I saw you had some left in your bowl, kitty cat.”
>> To ‘zumi’: “well i can’t send a pic not dressed”
After several minutes of giving the cat much needed attention, she moved her to the side so she could get to her wardrobe. While she decided on an outfit, she heard her phone chime again, but decided maybe she should go ahead and get dressed.
Now fully clothed she grabbed her phone and headed over to do some minimal makeup. Fill in her brows, cover her dark circles, the usual.
>> From ‘zumi’: “Not dressed this late in the afternoon? At work?”
>> From ‘zumi’: “I dont believe that’s normally acceptable in an office setting”
>> From ‘zumi’: “I’m guessing that means one of those things was a lie. you’re not supposed to lie to your friends”
She clicked her tongue. “Okay.. Oh wait!”
Friends!
She quickly checked her other messages. Sakusa and another friend had texted her earlier. Sakusa just sent a reminder about plans they had made for later in the week, so she confirmed the plans were still on. Her best friend surprisingly didn’t blow up her phone for ignoring him; not that he had anything important to say. She typed out a quick message to him, then got back to Iwaizumi.
>> To ‘zumi’: “fine I did sleep in”
>> To ‘zumi’: “sorry for lying how can I ever make it up to you”
Mochi was on her heels as she left the bedroom. “Okay! Okay!”
>> From ‘zumi’: “depends”
>> From ‘zumi’: “are you planning on getting dressed today”
She chuckled, and quickly gave Mochi food and fresh water.
>> To ‘zumi’: “yeah. Done. Mochi got her breakfast and now I’m getting mine”
As she stepped into her kitchen, Iwa was already calling her. What did she expect? She sighed and answered the call.
“You haven’t eaten yet?!” Did she expect him to say anything else? No.
“Hello to you, too.”
“Y/n.”
“Don’t dad me.”
“Wha-“
“Don’t ya have work today?”
“No, I have today off.”
“Oh. Fun fun.” She sent a request to switch to video chat before working on her brunch.
“..You’re dressed, right?”
She snorted. “I generally don’t cook naked.”
“Generally?” He accepted the switch to video call and she propped her phone up on the countertop. She could see he was indoors, but did not recognize where.
“I’m making something to eat now, but we can talk. Don’t worry, I’m fully clothed.” She snickered.
“Oh, so you do live somewhere,” he said with a coy smile. She winced at the nod to her secrecy. “What are you making?”
She paused staring down at her phone, then looked around and left the phone’s frame.
“You haven’t even figured out that much? I can’t believe you haven’t had anything to eat yet! It’s after 3pm!”
“It’s not-“ She caught sight of the time on the microwave and winced again. Whoops. She popped her head back in the camera frame long enough for a, “Nah.. Totally know what I’m cooking, yup!”
But she still caught his less than pleased expression before she turned away. She heard a sigh then, “Why don’t we just have lunch together?”
“Oh? You wanna have lunch with me, Iwaizumi?” She said, digging through the refrigerator for something she could make a meal out of.
“Do you want to cook or do you want to join me?” He cocked an eyebrow.
“Boo.” She picked the phone up and held it in front of her as she abandoned what food and cookware she already laid out. “Yeah, I’d love to go get somethin’. Anything.” She glanced around the room. “I apparently need to grocery shop.”
He shook his head. “Any preference?”
“Nah. I’m literally wilting away. I’ll eat anything.” She threw an arm over her face dramatically as she walked from the kitchen.
He laughed. “Okay. I’m already out. Want to meet me somewhere?“
“Well, if yer out already,” she smirked and fell back onto the loveseat, “Why don’t you get whatever and come to my place. We can eat here.”
“Uh huh. I don’t know where you live, you little shit,” he grumbled.
“Ah, well, I could text you my address.. Are you anywhere near Kita ward?” His eyes were fixed on her through the screen, but he gave no response, verbally or otherwise. Her cheerful expression dropped and she spoke with an apologetic tone, “Look, I’m sorry about not sharing this stuff. I only didn’t want you to know where I live to be careful. Because the whole.. y’know..”
“Because you were afraid that I knew. And now you know that I do. How is that better?” The screen adjusted as he stepped outdoors from wherever he was.
She flicked stray hair out of her face. “Well.. because of your reaction. That’s what I was afraid of. But it was fi-“
“I’m still mad about it,” he commented without looking at the screen as he walked. Wherever he is isn’t too busy.
“Yeah, well.. ya have the right to be.”
“Please, just.. don’t lie to me anymore.” He stared at her through the screen with furrowed brows.
She nodded. “I won’t. I promise.” Mochi jumped over her face and onto the arm of the loveseat behind her head. “Also, sorry for lying this morning too.”
“What- Was that a cat?”
“Huh? Yeah.”
He just stared for a second before shaking his head. “And I don’t care about the thing earlier. Playing around and teasing is different than hiding a part of yourself and your life.”
“Yeah..” Mochi flipped her tail in Y/n’s face and she quickly slid it away. She then tilted her phone up so the cat was now in front of the phone and the shifter’s head was peeking from the bottom of the screen. “This is Mochi by the way. Umm, are ya allergic to cats?”
“So that’s who that is, huh. And no, I was just surprised you had a cat. You never talk about it.”
Around you, comment best left to herself.
“Good ‘cause her fur is everywhere.”
Y/n ran across the apartment when she heard knocking at the front door. Unlocking it, she opened the door to Iwaizumi with takeout. “Hey! Did ya have any trouble getting here?”
The smell of food suddenly hit her and she moaned, “I am so hungry. Oh my gosh, thank you.”
He stepped into her apartment and kicked off his shoes. “I didn’t think you’d live in the city.”
He looked around the apartment. It appeared to be not much bigger than his, but the floor-to-ceiling windows along the entire wall to the right made it feel much larger.
Y/n grabbed the bags of takeout from him and ran off to the kitchen which sat to the left, dining table sitting in the area between the entryway and kitchen.
The floors were a grey wood and the walls were painted a darker grey. The white and black in the kitchen along with her mostly black furniture definitely gave the space a monochrome feel.
“What, thought I lived in the woods?” She laughed. “I just run there. And, like, chill there. I love nature and the city alike, and this is closer to work so..”
He walked toward the living room, walking past a sofa to reach the wall of windows. Mochi jumped onto a small end table next to him to request a greeting. He ran a hand along Mochi’s back after letting her sniff him. “What do you do again? It’s close by?”
“Uhh,” he could hear her shuffling around in the kitchen, “Best summary would be really boring business stuff. For other businesses. Around Chuo Ward.”
“How creative,” he said dryly.
“Logistics,” the kitchen noises stopped, “Making calls, boring desk work.”
She walked up behind Iwaizumi so quietly he didn't notice she had left the kitchen. “I mean, other stuff too, but ya know.”
He jumped a little when her voice came from his right where she suddenly appeared.
She stifled a giggle. “Sorry. Do ya wanna eat over here?”
He gave a wary look.
“Believe me it’s fine,” she shooed the cat from the end table, “This little brat makes a bigger mess than you ever could.”
She paused before adding, “Ah.. Actually, I might make more messes.”
He snorted. “Wherever is fine.”
The two of them shared the larger of the two sofas. She placed her mostly empty noodle bowl on the coffee table, then leaned back and maneuvered so that her legs were draped over the arm of the sofa and her head resting against one of his thighs. “Excellent choice. You are definitely allowed to pick where we eat in the future,” she said staring at the ceiling, totally content.
Iwaizumi’s legs were stretched out in front of him, one hand holding a drink and the other now moved to the back of the sofa after Y/n claimed where the arm once was. “Oh yeah?”
She hummed in agreement, eyes now gazing across the room.
He looked towards the windows again, sipping at his drink. “I bet sunrise is pretty from here.”
She hummed again, but this time in disagreement. “Nah, wrong way. But I never wake up early enough anyway.”
He looked down at her resting face. She was wearing much less makeup than usual. It’s the first time he noticed the faint details of her face. “You wake up early enough when you stay with me,” voice low.
“Yeah.. But that’s the only time. I don’t sleep much there.” She opened her eyes just barely to look at him.
His eyebrows raised, he wasn’t aware of that. He thought she just woke up early. “Why’s that?”
She turned her head so she faced away from him now and spoke softly, “..Anxious maybe?” She turned back to him. “You make it sound like I stay with you a lot. I’ve only stayed twice.”
“I think it was three times.”
“Nah,” she sat up this time, kicking her legs around to face forward, just missing Mochi, “Maybe four times.”
“Definitely not four times.” He looked around the room again, taking in her home.
“Eh. Next time,” she reached down to swipe at Mochi under the coffee table.
He chuckled as Mochi took off to climb a cat tree against the wall behind them.
“So other animals..” He trailed off, not sure if he should finish that sentence.
“Cats don’t mind at all,” she met his gaze, “You’re talking about Mochi living with me, right? Dogs and some other animals do seem to notice, but she doesn’t. I could shapeshift in here and she wouldn’t care less.”
“And you can ask me whatever, I won’t get offended. Not really anyway.” She turned in her seat to fully face him, leaning her head against the arm he had along the back of the sofa. “Well, I mean, if you did ask something I didn’t want to answer, I just wouldn’t answer,” she playfully crinkled her nose at him to which he rolled his eyes.
He sat his drink to the side. “You do that in here?”
“What, shapeshift? Not usually.” She moved her attention to the windows. It was well into the evening now and sunset had started, shades of yellow and orange filling the sky around the city. “Hmm.. I might not get to see sunrise here, but sunset always gets me.”
He looked over this shoulder then shifted to face the windows to watch the sunset as well. “What’s better, sunset or sunrise?”
She shifted again, this time to sit on her legs. She hadn’t had the chance to go for a run lately, and it’s starting to catch up with her, making her fidget. She leaned forward, letting her chest press against his back and head rest on his shoulder. She hums. “They’re two different things that can’t be compared. I pick both.”
They stayed there in silence watching the sun set behind the tall buildings of Kita. At least until Mochi saw her chance and jumped onto the coffee table just to nosedive into takeout leftovers. Y/n jumped up, chasing the cat away. “Mochi!”
Iwaizumi shook his head, watching her remove a food container from Mochi’s head. “How about I help you clean this up?”
She exhaled, starting to already stack some of the takeout containers. “Sure. I’d appreciate it.”
He reached over to grab anything she missed and followed to dispose of everything. She made a second trip to carry glasses to the sink. He met her back in the kitchen just for her to grab his wrist and drag him back to the living room.
Sunset was almost over, the sky fading to darker shades, deep pinks and purples painting the sky. “Watching the sunset from here is beautiful,” she whispered.
They returned to their spot on the sofa, this time she leaned into his side. “But watching the sunrise from your living room.. feels warm.”
“Is that so?”
They stayed like that while the sun disappeared, lights of the city illuminating the dark blue sky. Iwaizumi caught her starting to doze off as she leaned heavier into him. One arm around her side, he shook her lightly. “Hey, go to bed.”
She stirred and grumbled a response, “Fine. Stay?”
“Yeah, if that’s what you want. I’ll stay out here. You go to bed.”
She sat up and stretched. “Nah. My bed‘s huge. It’s like a.. I don’t know.. There’s plenty of room.”
“No, that’s okay.” He watched her stand and shuffle towards the front door, checking the locks.
“Look, I can’t make ya,” her voice filled with exhaustion. She walked behind the sofa and reached over to wrap her arms around his shoulders in a lazy hug from where he sat. “But if ya change yer mind.”
“I’ll get blankets.” She released him and moved around the living room towards the back of the apartment. She walked through her bedroom to one of the closets and pulled out a huge fluffy blanket and headed for the living room.
Iwaizumi was outside the bedroom door by the time she reached it. “What’s up with you and sleepovers?”
“I get lonely.” She handed him the oversized blanket. “Here.”
Taking the blanket, he said, “We don't even sleep in the same room.”
“Yeah. Well.” Her unfocused eyes looking past him. “My other friends do, but that’s fine. Just bein’ here matters.” She yawned again before continuing, “I have extra pillows too.”
He waited outside the doorway as she went back to the closet to retrieve pillows. Unlike the rest of the apartment, her bedroom was colorful from what he could see, and also messy. Compared to the monochrome, nice and neat main areas, this room could have belonged to an entirely different unit.
She returned to the doorway with two pillows and they walked back to the living room. “If you need anything, ya know, make yerself at home,” she said sleepily followed by a yawn, “I’ll leave the door open. And if Mochi bugs you, you can close her in my room. She’s a cuddler.”
He smiled before chasing the tired shifter off to bed, exchanging goodnights.

miks how did you isolate san O.O
that's so cool!!
hi hi :D !! under the read more will be a step-by-step tutorial on how i isolate people in gifs as seen in my san gif and this gif right here !!
i also use a different method for stuff like my wayv set & my rotoscope sets (dino, hongjoong, end of 2020) !! although similar, this is specifically what i did for my san gif !!!!
this tutorial will be screenshot heavy & centered only around adobe photoshop 2021 on a macbook @.@ because that’s all i use so i won’t be including stuff with vapoursynth or anything since i dont know how to use it HKASGDKJA.
INTRO — GETTING STARTED
so everyone has their own process in how they get clips for gifs so do what you would normally do~ what i personally recommend is using this on shorter gifs frame-wise. this is a very time consuming process!! i’m not saying you shouldn’t do it on gifs with a lot of frames, that’s just more to do. i tend to lean towards between 30-50 tbh. but like i said !! to each their own~
anyway, you’re gonna go about your business of making your gif but STOP !! don’t put your layers into a smart object!! you’re going to want to DUPLICATE these layers first.
after duplicating them, you can then convert either these or the original layers into a smart object. i labeled it as “b/w base”. this is a 30 frame/layer gif, i just took out a lot of bits hence why it says a different number.
STEP ONE — B/W COLORING
now that we have all that situated, i hide the duplicated layers. this way i know for a fact im changing the color of what will strictly be our background. so go ahead and make all those eyes next to the layers disappear for now while we go about the background.
this is another one of those “everyone has their own methods of doing it” type things. i just used the ‘Black & White...’ option under ‘Image’ -> ‘Adjustments’ & messed around with the settings until i got my desired background look~ again, do as you please. for this, i also adjusted curves & exposure.
now, for my san gif, i really wanted to emphasize the tunnel vision effect he has so i went over to the ‘Filter’ and selected ‘Gaussian Blur...’. for this gif, i used 4.1 !! i also sharpened it afterwards so use whatever settings you prefer ^^
!! DON’T WORRY ABOUT UR SUBJECT YET !! i know theyre all blurry and monochrome right now too, but this is where our duplicated layers come in~
STEP TWO — CROPPING
SO NOW ONTO THE FUN !! we’re going to unhide all of those layers from earlier this will bring all the color back as these layers are above the base layer we just played with.
the specific photoshop tool i used was the OBJECT SELECTION TOOL. it should be right between lasso and crop (if the tools are organized the same).
so on your TIMELINE, you’re going to want to make sure that it’s at the very beginning of your gif. i mean, right at the very edge. and of course, have your FIRST LAYER, NOT YOUR BASE selected. so the object selection tool has either lasso or rectangle options. i’m going to use the rectangle option to select my subject.
ok so i got lucky and it picked chan out really well; but just to make sure, i like to right-click and pick ‘Select Inverse’ so that it’s got the background area selected instead of chan.
this is where i right-click on the current tool we’re using and select ‘Quick Selection Tool’. i use this to pick up on small details that i might want to correct. for this specific frame, i had to adjust bits around his jacket and arms. for mac, holding down the ‘option’ key will allow you to essentially push out the lines. on windows, it’s the alt key !!
now once you’re satisfied with what you have, you’re going to want to right click & hit ‘Layer Via Cut’. this will then create a whole new layer of the background you just cut out!! feel free to delete that (you can also toggle it to double check to see if you need to undo the cut so that you can refine your lines)
AND BOOM CONGRATS YOU GOT THE FIRST LAYER DONE :D !!!! and you should be able to see just how it’ll look just like this ~
STEP THREE - ???? — REPEAT
just as that implies, you’re going to do this with every single layer until you finish all of them. it’s very time consuming BUT it’s something i enjoy doing because it’s really fun to me :D !! don’t forget to stretch and everything especially if you tend to hunch over while you’re doing this!!
TO GET TO THE NEXT FRAME, of course you’ll have to select the next layer on the right.... BUT you’ll have to click the forward button on your timeline. it should be 3-4 clicks until your background suddenly has color again. that’s your next frame so go ahead and repeat the process until you get to the last bit !!
TIP — i know it’s excessive clicking and it might just be me; but sometimes i get so into the zone i don’t notice mistakes. i suggest going back and forth between layers every now and then just to make sure you don’t overlook something. it’s better to catch a little slip up 2 layers ahead and undo that rather than finding out there’s a mistake after completing the entire thing </3
STEP THIS ONE — YOU DID IT !!
YAAAAY YOU GOT IT DONE AND IT SHOULD BASICALLY LOOK LIKE THIS !!!! go ahead and select all the layers you worked on and create a smart object !! this is where you can go ahead and do any coloring or whatever else your heart desires. crop, sharpen, post !!!
i really hope this tutorial helps ^^ if you have anymore questions then you can message me at any time !!!
#anonymous#answered#gif tutorial#I REALLY HOPE THIS HELPS I'VE NEVER WRITTEN A TUTORIAL BEFORE KDFJSGNN#this is really long and wordy sos#* mine.#* miks.gif

Gen 2: Red – Gothabilly
Your parents taught you a love of goth culture and fashion…but they never expected that you’d hear the swinging sounds of the 50’s in your heart. It’s time to make your way into the world and show it what you can do!
This sim should have the Serial Romantic aspiration and the following traits: Music Lover, Self Assured, and ONE other trait of your choosing. Upon reaching adulthood they should enter the entertainer career and eventually choose the musician branch.
This generation starts when your sim is a teen. This sim should have a red and black aesthetic with a 50’s twist similar to rockabilly but more goth. Red hair and eyes recommended. To finish out this generation you should do as much of the following as possible before the next generation starts:

Gen 3: Orange – Steampunk
Music never interested you the way it did your parents. You weren’t social or loud, you didn’t care much for the 50’s aesthetic…in fact you worried you weren’t even…goth…until you saw a steam engine in a movie. A BASIC GUIDE TO DIGITAL ART ON PROCREATE
okay so i joined the digital art scene about a year or so ago and it has been a total whirl! there’s so much stuff that’s so confusing and hard to understand at first. And that’s okay! A stupid amount of what constitutes as “good” or “complex” art is to do with layers, patience and experience.
and because literally every tutorial on here is for Paint Tool Sai i thought it might be useful for those of us using Procreate! because i don’t have sai and i have a relatively shit laptop by comparison to my Ipad.
so without further ado - here is how to make a KICKASS piece of art on procreate
1. REFERENCE + SKETCH
the first thing you're gonna wanna do is collect any references you need for thing youre tryna make. you can collect references by finding stock images, using other artists work (i use these mostly for colour refs cause i SUCK at finding good colours). however when i make art nowdays i usually just snap a selfie and use that. for this work i did the last option (see below)
after grabbing my reference i decide on the style i wanna use. for beginer artists what i suggest doing is just pasting the image onto your canvas, opening layers and adjust the opacity to around 20% by clicking on the little N on your layer with the photo. then once thats done add a new layer by clicking the + and work over that
for more experienced artists experimenting with style just stick that bad bitch reference in the corner, then open a new layer and sketch in your own style.
when it comes to sketching i usually do little flicky lines. i do this with a mid grey (like 50% white 50% black) i recommend the “Narinder pencil” which you can find by clicking the little brush at the top, selecting sketching and then selecting that bad boy. you can adjust size and opacity using the sliders to the side of the screen.
when sketching you just wanna get a rough idea of where you’re gonna do your eventual lines - don’t worry about it being smooth or anything just get down where everything goes
once you’re done you might have something like this:
this brings us too...
2. LINE ART
for beginners - lineart is just a sexy word that means a clean drawing with hard lines so you can colour it easier and it looks prettier. you want to do this on a new layer so you can delete the sketch one later.
your goal with lineart is to make it three things: 1) its gotta be seamless so you can select the insides, don’t leave little gaps between lines 2) its gotta be smooth! jagged lineart isn’t NEARLY as sexy as smooth curvy lines 3) this one is more of a tip - but lineart generally looks better if you do thinner lines inside your shape with a slightly thicker border line. again this isn’t essential but i find it looks cuter
the way i get my lineart all cute is by using the monoline brush (found in calligraphy). sometimes i use my own modified version of the Technical Pen (found in Inking) but mostly monoline is pretty neat. You can use whatever brush you want but mostly you just wanna ensure that its nice and smoooooth. you can do this by selecting the brush and then clicking it again. this will bring up a popup menu like this:
most of these brush settings are complicated and stupid and i’ll do a big post about it later. the only one that really matters here is streamline. if you wanna use a different brush for lineart just wack that slider up between 80-100% and you’re set.
once your lineart is finished on a seperate layer go to your layer menu and unselect the little tick on your sketch layer. you should be left with something like this.
3. ADDITIONAL DETAIL LINEART + MONOCHROME BASES.
once your focus lineart is done you can add detailed lineart by repeating the same process with sketching and lineart i described above. i like to do details separate because if i dont like it i can just delete the whole layer without destroying my focus.
what i find important in these now is using my favourite fuckin tool in this whole program. you can find it here:
Only start using this once youre 100% done with your lineart. once thats done - make sure youre on the lineart layer and click that weird little s at the top of the screen. go to the bottom and click automatic. then select somewhere INSIDE your lineart. it should do something like this:
don’t freak out! what that blue stuff means is that you've just selected the inside bit of your lineart. continue selecting until your subject is 100% coloured in.
MAKE SURE THE BACKGROUND/STUFF OUTSIDE YOUR LINEART ISN’T SELECTED. ALSO MAKE SURE YOU’VE SELECTED THE LINES THEMSELVES. THEY WILL TURN WHITE ONCE THEYRE SELECTED. if u fuck up and select something by accident that’s all g, theres a little undo button on the bottom. if you click on the paint brush or another tool and you cant add stuff to your selection you can reload the mask by holding down on the weird s and the selection will reload. If there are certain bits of your work that you’re struggling to select with automatic selection that’s also not an issue. just click the “freehand” setting next to the automatic setting on the bottom and you can now use your stylus to draw around what you want to select.
once you’ve selected your foreground in its entirety - THEN click the layer button. insert a new layer underneath your lineart layer. Using literally any brush (works best if you get one from the painting section) colour EVERYTHING white. just get round brush and colour all of it. you wanna keep your line art layer separate over the top.
once all of it is coloured hold down on the weird s tool until it reloads the selection. then look along the bottom of the screen and click the little button that looks like 2 arrows pointing at each other. THIS INVERTS YOUR SELECTION. Open a new layer and make this entire thing a grey. THIS IS WHOLE STEP IS OPTIONAL BUT ITS SUPER USEFUL AND THE SELECTION TOOL IS SUPER HELPFUL FOR GOOD ART. DOING THIS WILL BE SUPER USEFUL WHEN YOU COLOUR STUFF LATER.
once you’re done it should look something like this:
4. BASE COLOURS
okay so this is where shit starts to get real. The goal of putting down base colours is to make is easier to add eventual shading to your piece and decide your colour scheme. This is where the white layer you just used is gonna become your BITCH.
you wanna start by duplicating your white layer you just made. You do that by opening your layer menu and swiping that thot to the left. this is what should happen:
click duplicate. Select the top duplicate you just made and select our favourite weird s tool. click inside your shape and the whole white shape should go blue (become selected). next, open a new layer on top of the white layer. colour in your base colours and now none of it can go outside the lines. you didn’t even have to do a billion selections. you just select inside the white blob on the layer we made the step before, opened a new layer and started colouring. fucking superb. so much time saved. DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I USED TO SUFFER BEFORE I THOUGHT OF THIS. HOW LONG I SPENT SELECTING AND RESELECTING I CANNOT
A TIP FOR PEEPS NEW TO THIS PROGRAM - if you use your finger and hold down on a colour you’ve just used it acts like an eyedropper tool so you can pick up any colour you want. like this:
once you got your base colours done you can either: 1) go to your grey layer you made in the last step and select the tick next to it. once you’ve done that scroll to the bottom of your layers and select background. it will open a colour wheel. pick your background colour. 2) you can use my second favourite tool from this program! go to your grey layer you made in the previous step. click on it, then click on it again. (not the little n just click the whole layer) this menu should pop up:
oh MAN okay so. “alpha lock” pretty much means that it locks whatever is on the layer. when you get another brush and go over a layer with alpha lock turned on you can only paint over what you have previously put on the layer before turning on alpha lock. Its like automatically selecting everything on the layer. its fucking brilliant. anyway. scribble over your grey layer (once alpha lock is on) and boom you have a base for your background.
NOW YOU KNOW ABOUT ALPHA LOCK YOU GO BACK TO YOUR LINEART LAYER. SELECT ALPHA LOCK. COLOUR IN YOUR LINES ROUGHLY 2 OR SO ISH SHADES DEEPER THEN YOUR BASE COLOURS
(minus eyes i like to keep the lines around them black.) this will make your art like 100000000 times nicer (majority of the time)
once you’re done you should get something like this:
this brings up to...
5. SHADING!!!!!!! this is my favourite step tbh.
what you wanna do is chuck on a new layer over the top of your base colours. and go into your brushes. pick up your basic bitch “round brush.” this is (in my opinion) the best painting brush in the program. Its the thing you can do the most with. so what you wanna do it get a slightly deeper colour from your colour wheel by yeeting your colour selection slightly more saturated and slightly more dark. dont just make it blacker move your colour selector on a diagonal to get a nicer colour. (i’ll eventually do a colour theory ref but today is NOT that day.)
i like to do colouring in short, light strokes. DON’T PRESS TOO HARD. you wanna get that cute little gradient.
A THING FOR BABY ARTISTS: on every art program i have ever used, the blending tool SUCKS. it makes paintings UGLY AF. (wow another tutorial i have to do at some point. i HATE the blending tool. SO HERE IS HOW I COLOUR MY ART TO MAKE IT LOOK, YKNOW, GOOD:
Unless you’re drawing something SUPER freaking smooth like a bubble or some shit. when you wanna blend colours what you gotta do is: 1) put in your darker colour. 2) use your finger to bring up the eyedropper tool to select a mid colour of the colours your blending together - a mix between your lighter and darker colour. (remember that tool? it looks like this)
3) Paint the colour you just made in the middle of your lighter and darker shades. REPEAT THIS PROCESS ON EITHER SIDE OF THE COLOUR YOU JUST PUT DOWN TILL IT LOOKS GOOD. The result is an WAY sexier piece of art.
once you’ve put in all your shadows repeat the same process with highlights.
FUN TIP: if you decide you dislike a colour or want to change the colour you already did all the shading for you can change the colour without any major drama. You can do this by select ing the colour on your colour wheel you would like to change your already shaded work too. (make sure you’re on the right layer.) then hold down on the colour dot on the top bar (next to your layer settings) and drag it to whatever you want recoloured. let go of the dot and it should recolour your work (including all the shading you’ve done granted that its on the same layer) like this:
once you’ve got all your shading done it should look something like this:
6. background and pretty bits
so! youve got this kickass work but nothing surrounding it. lets fix that.
In procreate there is SO MUCH you can use to spice up a work. a SCARY amount even. this is when layer settings are gonna start to come in handy.
ill do a masterpost on procreate brushes for backgrounds later, but for this piece what im gonna do it head over to the Luminescence section and pick up a “nebula brush”. this makes a complex galaxy kinda design in a randomised stamping pattern that is frankly SEXY AS ALL HELL. Select a layer below your base colours but above your background colour. IMPORTANT NOTE: this brush’s blend mode is autimatically set to “add” (ILL DO ANOTHER POST ON THAT LATER)which means if you go over the same spot heaps of times it will eventually go a bright white. This can be nice, but its not really what i want cause its kinda intense. to make this thing go glowy but not ~too~ glowy im gonna lower the brush opacity (the bottom slider) to around half way. i set my colour to a light yellow and a darkish pink and put in some nebulas!!!! once that was done I wantd to add some more colour variation so i popped open a new layer - selected the lightleak tool and lowered the brush opacity using the slider to around 20% just to spice some shit up
you can kinda do whatever you want for your background. sometimes its nicer just to go into artistic, select a random brush and draw a square underneath what you were doing. backgrounds can be super detailed or super easy it doesn’t really matter to be 100% honest.
THE PART 2 OF THIS STEP WILL ADD HEAPS OF DIMENSION TO YOUR WORK AND MAKE IT SUPER PRETTY: adding light effects over the TOP of your main subject often creates a more realistic sense of depth. In simple terms it just makes the thing look more 3D and nice. to do this, get a random brush with a nice (preferably light) colour. i picked up a “bokeh brush” from the Luminescence section. make this pretty big. sprinkle your brush across the page on a NEW LAYER above all of your work so far, including line art! Then open your layer menu and click that little n in the corner again. Remember this one:
click the little n. then go down to the bottom and select a layer setting from either of the 2 groups circled (i normally like overlay for this type of thing) you can mess around with layer settings and opacity till you find something that looks super nice. My piece now looks like this:
pretty cool right. now we’re gonna make it EVEN COOLER.
7. LIGHT FILTERS
this is something i picked up from artists like softmushie and cryptidw00rm. (not gonna @ them here cause they probs dont wanna get tagged in my shitty tutorial thing but yeah i owe so much to those two especially)
for those unsure of what im talking about: light filters are layers you add over work to make the lighting on it seem more natural and pretty. you do this by colouring over your natural highlights and shadows with different colours and then messing with the layer settings to make it seem like its being hit by sunlight. these layers go BELOW your foreground stuff (the bokeh lights from step 6) but ABOVE your lineart.
start by opening a new layer. select a colour similar to where the green outlines are here:
now on this layer paint over anywhere where the sun or other light source would be normally hitting (like cheekbones hair etc.) this can be kind of like shading. dont worry if it looks shit at first we’re gonna change it.
open a new layer beneath the one you just made. Using a colour similar to one circled in purple above colour over all the shadows in a piece. it should now look like this:
now open your layer settings on the purple/darker layer by selecting the N like we did with the foreground layer before. you can play around from here by setting the layer mode to anything from the “darken” or “contrast” menu. For this work i chose overlay. I then lowered the opacity until it looked nice.
Repeat the step above with the lighter highlight layer. when adjusting this one make sure you set the layer mode to anything from the “lighten” or contrast” menu. For this work i did hard light.
your peice should now look kind of like this:
AND YOU’RE DONE!!!!!!!!
look at that sexy thing you just did. Congrats on creating an awesome peice of art!!!!!!

Press Release:
Modern Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Justin Caguiat titled Permutation City 1999. This is his first solo exhibition with the gallery.
In Caguiat’s large-scale paintings on unstretched canvas or linen displayed in wooden frames, layers of oil and sometimes gouache, pastel and acrylic synthesise into highly detailed patterns which fill and spill out beyond imperfect edges. Now and then, swathes of monochrome washes emanate like filters or planes of light across the surface. From this, landscapes and otherworldly scenes materialise, drifting in and out of legibility, or consciousness.
These are liminal paintings, both corporeal and cryptic. They resist an instantaneous reading, demanding time to decipher, and to search for compositional footholds within their archaic atmosphere.
Caguiat’s idiosyncratic style is informed by varied fields including science fiction literature, the baroque-folk hybrid aesthetic of early Filipino Catholic Santos, 60s psychedelia, les Nabis, Ukiyo-E, urban graphic art and the historical legacy of Manga. In scale and format they can be read like murals and landscapes, and while not narrative, have a reverential or devotional purpose akin to a fresco.
Though suggestive of Romanticism, the paintings are not illusionistic, demonstrating and not concealing their evolution through layers. The transposition of paint – ideas, information, figures and ornament – is fragmented, like the dissolution of memory.
A text of the same title written by the artist accompanies the exhibition.
Justin Caguiat was born in 1989 in Tokyo, Japan. He lives and works in New York City. In 2018 he had a solo exhibition at 15 Orient, New York and his work has been included in group shows at galleries and project spaces throughout North America, in Italy and Switzerland. He has curated exhibitions with themanilainstitute.org and other collectives and is a published poet having participated in readings and performances including in 2017 at the Kunsthalle Zürich, Switzerland.
Permutation City 1999
After the outbreak he escaped to the Bay Area with his family. They had left New York and ended up crashing at a former youth hostel in downtown Berkeley an art collector had bought. It was under renovation prior to the shut down and was in the process of being turned into
He traded the collector a painting titled My meat is to do the will of him in exchange for room and board. In one of the rooms, by the side of the bed hidden between the bed frame and the wall he found a journal filled with observations written in fragmented prose, punctuated by drawings. He was so struck by the book that it ended up forming the basis of his work for the next three years, using the drawings as sketches, overlapping composites to layer and erase with paint, building up the surface over time.
He compiled some excerpts from the found journal. Each entry in the book was titled, borrowing each title for each painting.
“Thousand Year Old Laughter” He was a young lad. Discovered a video store carrying a large collection of American and Euro films with religious themes. Other half of the store was SFX Horror. Lurking around the store… the instructions have unfolded a spell Entranced by images of suffering grotesque eroticism Fell into images forbidden the name is not what it appears
This way was truly nothing already it disappeared as smoking trails left by the things made seemingly in desires shape
solitary in fluid sunlight reflecting off store window eyes that unsubstantiated the hollow form revealed another presence. generating heat but not light and melting snow it turned into water, we lived for 16 years in Tokyo.
“Extraction and Compassion” When Grandmother came to visit us from Manila she couldn’t be around the Japanese people. Only once she recounted to my mother the horror of the Japanese occupation of the Philippines
During the massacre of innocents their favorite method of killing was the bayonet The hotels in downtown Manila were turned into rape camps they would take women and girls there after they were forced to bury their children, siblings, and neighbors in mass graves Hospitals were set afire after patients were strapped to their beds Pregnant women were raped and their stomachs were ripped open with bayonets Their unborn children drowning in sunlight streaming in from the broken walls and shattered windows “O you dig and I dig, and I dig towards you, on our finger the ring awakes”
In our apartment in Tokyo she made a room for herself in the closet. She was a devout Catholic, she could speak to spirits
She was the matriarch of my grandfathers second and illegitimate bastard family. Grandfather died when mother was one years old, he played piano for the silent films and was a photographer Mother was the youngest and 13th child. when grandfather died, suddenly they were were poor; he had left them nothing
They lived in a tiny garage and slept on the floor in rows they moved dwellings frequently my Mother often didn’t have enough food to eat. Her first job was cleaning public toilets
In Tokyo people always asked me if my mother was a maid the echo of the occupation evolved with the diaspora after the colonization and military campaigns of the Spanish, Japanese, and Americans The Filipina maids of Tokyo are kind and hard working people
When my grandmother died she left my mother her golden crucifix. My mother later gave the crucifix to me,
and after a year my father kicked my grandmother out and sent her back to Manila
They had a broken television in the room and the picture was in black and white. We would watch TV and my Grandmother was happy and said it reminded her of the past.
“Branches Flower Windows” walking down quiet streets of my Tokyo I love the moss covered cinder block walls and overgrown gardens of ferns, parks and Shinto temples and under the shade of trees everywhere, ponds and streams reflecting viridian glow, small waterfalls and stone pathways. Moss grows everywhere Sleepy stray cats and small fields of dirt and wild grass. The hollows of bushes littered with the skeletons of cicadas at the end of summertime and in every apple lays a fetus curled asleep There is no land more beautiful fields of rice paddies from the train window on the outskirts of the city the wind shakes and branches flower windows personalities whistle out of these sectors of apples that are made to be regenerated
Ever-present crows calling from the trees, pockets of nature surrounded by hyper-evolved architecture and a totalized homogeneity. Animism and fascism are alive and vital here, but now the Japanese are pacifists.
“The Approach of Beauty its Body was Fungible” Starting when I was 13 years old I used to sneak out of my house at night. My older sister was secretly taking LSD everyday and going to school, an exercise in appearing to be normal while her mind pushed against the boundaries of reason I would leave at around 1 in the morning after everyone was asleep. Wandering around, sometimes walking as far as Shibuya or Harajuku or to an unfamiliar neighborhood I would break into apartment buildings and go to the rooftops and sleep there. I sleep in parking lots and in nooks in between buildings, hidden places underneath stairwells and behind ventilators and generators whole lifetimes of how we love the escape Forgotten atoms cradled in sweet music and the laughter of our memory of the buildings dropping seeds
Radiant spheres contain their hidden appearance to take the form of different species in the future Growing variegated subjects decay into a lonely view that the preachers of passion have seen through their vector making melody
meted out in pleasure the lyrics recorder quickly to their passing pain
“Anal Staircase of the Eye Reflected in the Fingernail” They began to sleep walk and hallucinate. Floating above their body: walking around the apartment at night, talking uncontrollably
Its psychotic dream state remember waking up on the floor of the bedroom, The walls and ceiling slowly began to shrink, Shrinking to the point of a needle, the point was a pupil, They were trapped inside the pupil, the pupil was the coffin.
Splash water on their face to wake them up, the knock on the head sent us reeling, I’m relieved to find him sleeping. Its safe to be here while I was dreaming I kept forgetting I am living as todays reflection.
I was watching everything, I was watching my body moving dislocated from its host, I was moving from room to room like a fly on the wall, I was walking and talking like a living doll.
“The Saint is Never Busy” I cry because hes dying, now hes dust an older shade of green across my eyes turns to red dust of the heart. now how to keep out of hell are the wheels that are turning, he used to be so violent but now so enfeebled yet His eye still holds violence, his other eye is blind and He has to wear a diaper
The wheels of the sun its done but dont forget about its shadowy child, For its picture you hate to keep even though it always lives developed the horror of an idea that wears you unrendered, Its been 14 years its paralyzed brilliant doors are locked forever, out of waves of memories life times locked.
He looks old He walks so slowly, he shuffles from room to room compulsively the dementia atrophied brain
He doesn’t remember anything about me. He knows I am his son but nothing else, no memories I am a shadow in the periphery of his mind. My mother hid the kitchen knives just in case
He thinks its the year 1999, a maddening coincidence to the primal year of my reveries.
I came to London and went to see him, who had returned to where he grew up in Wales
Mother sleeps with the house keys under her pillow and a change of clothes and money in case he becomes violent and she needs to escape He threatens her when he doesnt recognize her and she has to hide Crushed by her burden I see it in her face
Of course it wasnt supposed to end like this He refers to himself in the plural. pointing to his head Trapped in the year 1999, wandering amongst the reveries of whose youth?
“The Synthetic Memory Forming” –
We are in California now. Its peaceful here. New York seems so far away. Here in the Bay Area there are lots of crows, whom I love. They remind me of Tokyo. Our son dances in the sun and in the water an ant to the outsider sea.
We have cut a silly figure against the walls crumbling cake with all our bags A cigarette in my mouth my hat is lost against the orbing sun
the light is confusion. This is my last song you yell across laughing after the pale band where you removed your golden ring. The sun is chasing your tanned skin your fingers fan across the buildings in the sand optical trails waving against their warped angles
“Ive got nothing but reason left behind” Events are tiny earthquakes constantly reorienting the same set of histories but for now every one here is perfect standing dreamlike and frozen under the blue sun
A huge mob of crows, in the early hours of the morning on the way back home, that sent me weighing sleep against a walk around the block I turned away and fled as they knocked over the trash cans, The contents strewn like intestines on the street, nourished by the abundance, crying in unison
When the wandering fire Strikes the heart of stone Will you follow? Will you leave your home? Will you leave your life? Will you take the Longest Road?

Artist Analysis comparison

1) What is the name of the photographer? Is this photographer a professional photographer? If so, what companies has he or she worked for, what famous magazines have their photographs featured in or what galleries has he or she exhibited their work in?
laurence demaison : Demaison mostly does self portraits that have dark and distorted effects to them. She was born in France 1965 and went to the Strasbourg School of Architecture, and then around 1993 were the start of her first self portraits.
romina ressia : Ressia is a professional photographer that uses her work to challenge how we may think, she was born in 1981 and has exhibited many of her works, for example the Arusha Gallery in the uk and Arcadia Contemporary in New York.
2) What is the photographer’s motivation for being a photographer? What is the photographer’s motivation for taking / creating these types of images?
laurence demaison : Demaison likes to be able to show in photographs what the camera can see with long exposure times rather that just want the human eye cannot see and so being able to show this motivates demaison in some ways
romina ressia : Ressia grew up loving art but it wasn't until later in life that she fully committed to it to become a photographer, and so became motivated to become a photographer as she really wanted to be able to express herself and to do something creative.
3) What do you understand ‘Surreal’ to mean in art & photography? Basically explain what Surrealism means in your own words
Surrealism is an art movement that being in the twentieth century and
It is a way to describe images or photographs that have been created in a way in which the real world wouldn't be able to see or do, for example in photography long exposure shots can happen because of the camera and the settings but is not possible to see without the camera and so becomes surreal.
4) Do you think that this is more of a ‘Surreal’ or an ’experimental’ photograph?
laurence demaison : I think that demaison photographs and especially the one shown here are “surreal” as it something created with the help of the camera and the long exposure time to be able to create the blurred ghostly effect. Demaison photographs are not the ordinary portraits let alone self portraits , her work has a lot more imagination and depth for the viewer to be able to interpret and relate to in a different way.
romina ressia : With Ressia photographs and the one shown that they could both relate to either surreal or experimental in some way. To some extent Ressia work could be classed as experimental as they differ from normal photographs by the background and object blending together with similar patterns and so would experiment with what background may work with other foreground patterns. Within her work there are twists with taking more modern objects and putting them in older settings, I feel as so Ressia really experiments with the idea of the photographs relating to modern issues and how certain things in society have changed, she does this with the end result making think about an edwardian portrait has modern items. However these ideas could be portrayed as Surrealism as it would almost be surreal for that time era to have those items such as ice creams and moped helmets, but overall i think that it is more focused to experimental photography.
5) What are the visual elements in this portrait that make it either Surreal or Experimental? Describe and explain these visual elements.
laurence demaison : The main visual element in this specific portrait is that there is distortion of the face not only by the effect of the long exposure but also physical with some kind of string or twine that is wrapped around the face to help distort the image even further. With doing this it makes it hard to be able to spot the facial features almost as if they are missing and blend into one big blur, however one of the eyes is particularly visible to the viewer which is interesting as it may be purposeful and could represent that reality as the rest of the face is distorted and in a world of surreal.
romina ressia : backgrounds blend patterns no face just accesories
One of the most important visual elements in this portrait is that the background and the person both have very similar tartan patterns covering the whole of the image, even though the face is not visible due to the cloth the accessories such as the hat and the glasses are still there, but also you can still some imprints of the facial features like the ear which help to see the person, more of their outlinE, but with the cloth not to completely see them. Because of the background being similar yet complementing each other make the portrait more experimental than surreal as you could still see everything with the human eye that has been created for the photograph.
8) What important ideas are being explored in this photograph?
laurence demaison : With Demaison portrait as it is in black and white and distorted it may be to do with vision and the way things are seen , as just the one eye is almost focused on as it is visible between the twine wrapped around the face and the long exposure. So its almost with everything else that is going on the eye is still there and can see it all as without eyes you cannot see anything.
romina ressia : I think by the person underneath being hidden but still being able to see the outline and non facial features e.g the glasses could be an idea that it is what you see with people everyday that you can see them but just the outside you don't know what is going on inside with their thoughts and heart, and so this may have been explored as you dont know whats underneath in this photograph, even though we can see the outline and shape to match a standard person.
9) Is the imagery symbolic of an event or of an emotion)?
laurence demaison : I think as the portrait has a lot of darkness in it with the blurred face and the string that is wrapped around the face by the photograph being monochrome really helps to set the tone of the photo or to emphasise it. I think it represents a lot of dark and shadowy effects that help to create ghost like people of herself and also gives a saddened emotion.
romina ressia : This portrait is interesting as there is so much going on with the patterns and the bold colours yet there is also so little going with a straightforward portrait that together it helps to give even more mystery to the photo. I feel as so the use of the colours override what is hidden or the person that is underneath and not being able to see any emotion on their face yet at first glance you think of the photo as happy and warm due to the bright orange and red colours yet we do not know if this is what the person underneath is feeling.
10) Discuss the main technical or formal elements featured in this photograph?
laurence demaison : In the portrait it is just the person and so meaning that there is a lot of negative space behind as the background this goes with the image as it is in monochrome tones and so together help to give the same dark and twisted effect of the photograph. As it has blurry movement on the face and some of the body this also adds to the effect and interpretation of the photograph.
romina ressia :Some of the main elements in this is the strong colours that are in the tartan patterns but the hat and the glasses are both in black as they are not physically connected to the person with them being black and the rest coloured really impacts the picture as a whole and also helps to focus more on the person and who it may be rather that the photograph as a whole.
11) Do you consider this image to be a photograph or more of a piece of Fine Art? Explain your reasons for thinking this
laurence demaison : I think for Demaison the image is more of a photograph as to be able to achieve the final image the use of the camera and the settings and long exposure were needed to be able to create it and so wouldn't have been done without the use of photography skills.
romina ressia : Ressia image becomes more fine art i think as to do it a lot of preparation would of have to come in with it and as the person is covered it can look like a statue or a sculpture, also with the statements of the black hat and glasses against of the rest of the colour in the image makes it look more like a piece of art than photograph in my opinion.
12) What is your personal response to this photograph and how does this photograph inspire or relate to your own work?
laurence demaison : With this photograph I really like the way that the main points of the photograph are done before and during the image is taken, for example the blurriness of the face is done while taking the picture with a long exposure and movement and the string wrapped around the face would have also been done before the image is taken. I am also quite taken of the effect the long exposure and the movement can have on the picture as a whole as it can give different sense to the picture , but also how the black and white fit nicely to the tone of the photograph.
romina ressia : I am intrigued with this portrait with how the background and the person and the pattern are so similar yet you are still able to easily distinguish them from each other even though they can blend together as one. Also how their is the mystery of who the person is as it it is not clear to see with all of the facial features being hidden.
COMPARISON PARAGRAPH
Both Demaison and Ressia portrait photographs here have a similar composition with the model being shown from the lower shoulder up and positioned in the middle, Ressia model has a slight tilt in their head rather than being straight on like in Demaison.
The main difference between the photos is that Demaison image is monochrome and very neutral, because the image is blurred the colours within become soft. The black and white monotone is not harsh and doesn't take away from the original purpose of the photo. Compared to Ressisa image, which has a lot of colour going on, makes the photograph vibrant, also the colours are harmonious as they go well together .
On first look you at Demaison photograph you could feel the depth and depressed, trapped emotion of the person when looking further at the photograph I still felt it had the same disheartened dark mood, whereas my initial response to Ressia image at first was that it was more of a happy friendly mood as the colours help to perceive this, however on further inspection the mood became more abstract as you start to notice the person in covered and cannot tell any emotion or perspective of their face, and so their hidden identity make the photo more mysterious.
Overall I think that the most effective image is Ressia’s depending on how looks at it and how it can have different interpretations on the emotion and the mood that is trying to be conveyed. I really like this concept as with my work I want people to be able to interpret it in any way they wish rather than having a set tone to it. However I really like the fact that colour was used as the background as well and that the lines and the patterns in the background really help to bring the rest of the photo and that it's not just the subject that can do this. With Demaison photograph I thought that the use of the long exposure and movement making the blurred effect helped with the dimensions of the photograph, I think that doing something during the taking of the photograph rather than all post editing is lot more effective to the photograph sometimes and would like to try and include something like this in my work.
