I didn't expect Tenebria to get in, but I'm glad she did! I'm going to tell everyone about her because I can. First of all, under no circumstances should anyone subject themselves to this game. The latest update where they added very disorienting animations to the summons banners still makes me seasick. Second of all, Tenebria is a villain. If this bothers you, you are free to leave. Ok goodbye. Now on to the good stuff! Spoilers for the game's main storyline below. Also tw for character death.
Tenebria is a villain, which means she fights on the side of the Archdemon, who's in a constant tug-of-war game with his twin sister the Goddess. Every time he destroys the world, his sister remakes it completely and the cycle begins again. Typical sibling behavior. As one of the Archdemon's three Acolytes, each time the world is reset, Tenebria is tasked with demoralizing the enemy and reviving the Archdemon. Her powers revolve around showing a dream of what the person she's near most desires (Kamen Rider OOO fans can understand why I'm intrigued by that sort of power). It's apparently rare to have the willpower to be able to break out of her illusions. She doesn't show many emotions, but she has complex reasons for that. Mortals, to her, are actors in a grand play. And she's a harsh critic.
The reason she fights for the Archdemon is also tied into her lack of expressions. As a B-plot to a limited story quest, it was revealed Tenebria was born a noble girl, tired of being proper and bored with her daily life. Magic stuff was her special interest and stories about it where the only way to get her to do things she hated. When no one was looking, she touched the cursed magical artifact that killed her entire castle, possibly even her town (exact area of effect was never specified but she reacted to the castle inhabitants at least). Horrified by what she'd done and refusing to face that she was the cause of it, she locked away all her emotions in that cursed artifact and made judging humanity as an unamused immortal her entire persona. Which, on its own, fascinates me. Because I think she's actually judging her past self whenever she judges humans. She just can't unlock her emotions long enough to actually admit that she was wrong. And the kicker is also that she uses the thing that killed her home and a bunch of random civilians to stay alive. I wonder what runs through her head every time she's defeated or the world starts to end. I wonder if, in that moment, she ever thought "finally, I get what I deserve."
There's three different versions of her in the game, and two of them have pink hair. Ice element Tenebria is from a canon AU where she's the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, which is a story I don't remember enough of to analyze right now. But her kit revolves around baiting the enemy team to attack one of her teammates. Which matches her ability to read what humans want. The Fire element Tenebria, the OG, has a kit geared towards giving enemies the Sleep CC and slowing them down so they can't fight as easily. This also matches her role as the Acolyte who makes illusions in dreams and sows disorder among the Archdemon's enemies.
In conclusion, I appreciate her for the role she plays in the story, her powers, and her emotional complexity. If you've read this far, thanks! Have the only canon picture of Tenebria smiling
