Supervisor wants to do 9 genes...
Not related, but best way go get away with homicide how?
#just rambling#science talk#with current plate layout you can do max 8 genes per plate#one run aka one plate takes 90 minutes#i ain't gonna do two runs#you aren't even supposed to compare results from two runs#he literally told me that#i know he probably just forgot the max number of genes you can do#but still#this is probably just my hate for qpcr shining through#i don't want to pipet this much it's such a fucking pain

Marvellous job buddy! Thanks for all the answers and the drawing... the drawing is ... the drawing *gets distracted by Anemone's beauty* ... where was I? Ah yes! The art! It's gorgeous! And yes, I'm very queer, why do you ask?
Ahm.
Anyways...
*sneakily slides Anemone my phone number*
*mouths 'call me later' at her*
... my curiousity has been satisfied!
Some notes because why not?
I actually also have astigmatism on one eye, which means combined with my nearsightedness, my eyesight is extra shitty.
Oh, that's a very tiny department then (I already expected it but thanks for the confirmation). But still ten people is the size of a small research group and most of the time if money can be spent you have a technical assisstant (short TA) in those groups. Here are some of the tasks I know a TA does:
Ordering supplies
Inventory which can also go hand in hand with the supply ordering. Like they make a list of the things you have in stock, check regularly what common lab stuff needs to be ordered again (this includes things like gloves, pipets, pipet tips, well plates, petri dishes, common media and chemicals which vary depending on your research etc.). If people need more specialized supplies for their experiment (like stuff only they use) there's often an extra list for ordering this stuff. Like say you need a certain antibody or kit for your research, you put what you need into a shared list (excel or notion or whatever). The TA checks the list regulary and orders the stuff.
Upkeep of the lab. This is a bit tricky because everyone should take care of their own spaces and keep it clean but some routine upkeep is mostly the responsibility of TAs. Some examples: autoclaving stuff (autoclaving is a process to make stuff sterile, you need to autoclave certain lab supplies before you can work with them under the bench), refilling working stations with supplies (aka pipets, tubes and flacons), taking out the trash, taking care of the ordered stuff (accepting packages is such a pain in lab, like you need to open an unnecessary big box, find the tiny product you bought under tons of dried ice or cooling bags, check if it's the right thing, look where it's supposed to be stored, enter the item and it's storage place in the inventory list *sigh* ... it's annoying).
The fun stuff aka actually helping the researches with practical experiments. Since the Cavalieri's R & D department is kinda focussed on genetics I think that would mean following tasks: DNA and RNA extraction, PCR (Polymerase Chain reaction, it's for amplyfing DNA), gel electrophores, DNA sequencing, staining of tissues samples etc.
Sorry this totally escalated ^^' I like babbling about my job too much lol (I don't even know if this useful it's probably way too much unnecessary detail whooops)
Caligari Is a medical doctor, but his knowledge seems to be… uncomfortably vast.
Well... that's certainly omnious. I like it!! (I need to know what this guy's deal is so bad Myell, you are tempting me with mysteries again...)
HOW DARE THE CAVALIERI NOT LET MY GIRL GET A PHD!!!! SHE FUCKING DESERVES THAT TITLE DO YOU HEAR ME!!! AND I BET SHE'S EVEN BUSIER THAN AN ACTUAL PHD STUDENT 24/7 SHE SHOULD GET THE DOCTOR TO GO WITH IT *hastily forges Anemo's doctor diploma* THERE! FIXED THE ISSUE! *grumbles* the audacity of these people, not allowing my baby to publish her genius and be international recognised for her work, the fucking nerves
I love that nails and nail art are such a prominent part of Anemone's live, in fact i love it so much I'm willing to ignore that it might be against lab regs (again it really depends where and with what stuff you are working with).
Also the bunny thing... Myell... that's so fucking adorable *wants to squeeze Anemone as hard as I can*
(making this post for the second time because I done goofed and posted it instead of saving it as a draft)
I'll take the occasion to thank everyone for your support for Anemone's character sheet!
...aaaand it has come to my attention that so far she's received 4 different marriage proposals, so. I'm afraid you guys will have to form a line or something
Now, onto answering your questions! I thought to group them all here as to not flood anyone's dashboard ->
@lixenn asks the following:
• Actually, astigmatism! Caligari offered her corrective surgery multiple times, but she never really followed through with it. Also, she likes to wear them for fashion and has multiple frames for any occasion.
-
• I'd say she's directly managing around 10 people. She's been selecting the researchers herself. As for the personal assistant, I have yet to assign her one, so thanks for the heads-up as always Lix. 🩵
-
• Your assumption is correct. Caligari Is a medical doctor, but his knowledge seems to be... uncomfortably vast. He taught Anemone everything needed to take the place of the late Dr. Argenti. She specializes in genetics, because it's believed that the Pallid Flame's origin lies in the genetic history of the Cavalieri.
-
• Technically no, she doesn't have one and can't get one. The academic career of a Cavalieri, no matter the field, is limited to the family's context. External professionals that choose to cooperate with the Cavalieri (for example, Argenti) are also advised to keep their public presence to the bare minimum, and are constantly kept in check. They have nothing that can officially attest their level of knowledge in public institutions - hell, some of them don't even have a birth certificate to their name.
-
• fortunately not They met during routine blood work, while Anemone was still studying to become a researcher (and before her transition). Myr commented something nice about her painted nails, she was still an awkward little nerd at the time so that gesture was really appreciated. With time, Anemone got inspired by Myr's confidence and refusal of the family's ways.
-
• She likes to practice nail art! It's not uncommon for Lidija to get a call from her asking her to come over so Anemone can let the stress out by panting Lidija's nails. Myr refuses to participate
-
@einsatzzz asks the following:
• Yes! Or at least, they try to be. Anemone is super busy with managing the whole Second Branch, so sometimes they won't see her for weeks. Also, it's kinda risky for her to be seen with Myr often, given she's seen as a troublemaker, but she tries her best to be there (even though it's a really cat Vs dog relationship). Since Myr is often not allowed in recreational spaces, they like to spend their time outside doing mostly things that Myr doesn't get to do due to her restrictions (ex. Picnics, keeping Myr's appearance in check, walks, board games that Lidija sneaks out/Myr steals from the break rooms...)
-
@ravensilversea asks the following:
• I chose to keep this one for Anemone, since I was already working on her sheet when it arrived. She's a really pragmatic person, and so typically tries to be rational about things. When she does need to wind down or stop her brain from spiraling, she likes to read books. She's really into anthropology, and...bunnies. Manuals, studies, photo books. She's always wanted to keep one, but never felt truly ready.
