this post reminded me of something that's been rattling around in my brain since the first time i watch vol 2 & i still have yet to see anyone else really talk about this so i guess i have to now before it makes me insane:

the way that el not being able to find max in the void is revealed.

she finds the empty coke bottle she & max used to decide who to spy on in s3 under her old bed in the cabin, and when she spins it, it transitions to her alone in the void (or something like that, it's been a while since i last watched this scene).

the fact that she spins the bottle always really stuck out to me, even the first time i watched this scene. like idk it feels more significant than just a cool transition. it feels like el is making a decision here.

obviously, when she looks for max in the void, she's trying to make sure that max is okay. but i can't help but think that there's something more to it, that maybe el was looking for max to bc she wanted reassurance that it's okay for her to break up with mike (just like mike tries to get from will throughout s4, as the post i linked earlier points out).

it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that max will give her that reassurance, but if el can't get to max, then spinning that old coke bottle might just be the next best thing.

Biggest byler doubt you ever had and how was it solved?

Hi!

I guess it was when I decided to go through the mil*ven tag just to see their perspective. I still do it sometimes, to be honest, but my decision was to see if their points make sense, because I like to challenge myself and I wanted to understand why they don't think Byler will be a thing so I forced myself to be in a position of: maybe this might work like this, maybe it's this, you know?

As to how it was solved, as it usually is for me - with logic - lmao.

I started thinking about the grand scheme of things, connecting all of the facts together instead of approaching them individually. The point of "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" is very applicable to the situation.

So I started thinking: Why Will falling in love with Mike was a choice they made, at all?

Because if we think about it, realistically, that decision meant that they'd have to sacrifice something. Whether it was Will's chance at happiness or Mike's relationship with El, something would have to give, eventually.

I feel like a parrot repeating myself at this point, but Will's happiness is deeply connected to being able to spend his life with Mike. He said this not once, but twice already. He also said he'd always NEED (not want, not love, not anything else) Mike.

The fact that Will is so in love with Mike that he is willing to sacrifice his own happiness for him was also a choice the writers made. They made sure to let us know that this isn't a crush, that this isn't fleeting or passing.

They also made a choice of having El and Mike arguing. That choice is also important because it shows us that they don't understand each other, they don't know each other enough to understand what the other is saying.

All of these were choices.

So when I stopped to think about it, I realized how pointless they were from a narrative standpoint, especially if they won't amount to anything. Because then what was the point of it in the first place?

What is the point of building this entire arc only for it to end right back where it started? Because then, not only Will's love for Mike didn't do anything and exists only to cause him pain, they spent hours and God knows how much in budget on something that didn't do anything to the overall story. Not only would that be stupid; it also means they sacrificed Mike's storyline with El (because let's be for real, they could find a way of having him with her at Nina if they wanted) for NOTHING.

It's one thing for them to create this storyline of Will being in love, it's another thing completely different for them to choose this over the opportunity of Mike learning more about El's powers and about who she is with her.

So that's how I go about it.

My opinion on "Chance

Okay, listen, let me ramble for a minute. I don't think Chance is real. To have "Chance" Makes no fucking sense. Sure, it gets Mike jealous, but Mike doesn't need to be jealous for Byler to get together. They can do that on their own time, but from a non-Byler shipping standpoint, it makes no sense too. Chance adds nothing to the plot. What would he do? Why would he care about Will? Why would Will give a fuck about him? Why would Will get over Mike in this season of all times? Why, why, why? and not enough time to answer it. and that's the most pressing issue, time. This is the final season, we can't have Eddie's, Argyle's, and Max's popping up now. Erica's friend (Which is who I think the younger male actor is, the one with the glasses.) can pass because he's probably a minor role. But a whole ass love interest for the main character in the FINAL season. There isn't a spot for him, the cast is to big, there is to many stories going at once, to many dots to connect, for this Chance character to fit in easily. He won't be developed right, he will take away precious time from other characters, and he won't be a satisfying end for Will.

That is the most important part, Will's character ending. From the start Will has been pushed down again, and again, and again. There is a reason that "Will Byers needs a break" is a character tag for ao3, we all want Will to be happy, and a half-baked character introduced THIS season won't be satisfying. We want Will to get what he wants after all the shit he's been put through and some bad Y/N wattpad stand in, isn't what Will wants. He wants Mike, he always wanted Mike, and to not get what he wants at the end of the series would be criminal. it starts and ends with Will. From the start, mike was there, and for the end Mike will be there. Not some rando introduced during like the third episode. Also, is it just me or does Chance not feel very duffer brothers? The way people are saying Chance is introduced doesn't feel like them, it feels like a fanfic. That Wattpad burn wasn't just for fun, it was because of this. Chance feels like the set up to a highschool Byler fanfic. It's like "Oh a new kid comes into town and Will falls in love and that Makes Mike realize what he's been missing. But GASP! What if it's to late!"

That isn't the duffers modus operandi, they don't just put people into ST for like a one-shot gag. Each and every character got developed in some way, even Argyle to an extent. Not one was just a means to an end, Max, Eddie, Argyle, they all fulfilled a purpose and developed along the way. Chance doesn't work like that. One, the time crunch i mentioned early, no time to develop him. Two, without that time, he's a fucking cardboard cut out, he's a means to an end, he's a way to make Mike jealous and get Will a disney love interest, period. So for all these reasons, i don't think Chance is real. I can talk more in the comments and add on more if you want lmao.

we dont need that at all!! byler sex is speculative and somewhat far-fetched, and even though I believe it has serious potential to show up in the show, its still the wacky cousin of the byler community who showed up with some beers and a boombox. it's so fun at spicy byler tumblr, and if we start bringing classic Byler Doubt TM in, we're just going to ruin stuff! cos sex isnt guaranteed here anyway, so why doubt it? we've only just got through the gauntlet of the underage issue, please let's just have fun now for a bit lol

also im going to add my own tangential poll to this post: for me, one of the biggest 'evidences' of spicy byler times incoming is that noah and finn (noah in particular) react in a certain kind of blushy/secretive way during press/social media that does not merely speak to me of their characters getting a simple romantic ending, or just a kiss. i can completely understand why many people don't take anything outside of the show itself as evidence, and i wish i didnt, but i just can't help it. cos shows are fiction and made to manipulate you as a viewer, whereas real people, even actors, have tells. im not claiming to know finn and noah's personal tells, but for me, as two humans, their body language does not lie!

noah especially gives off the vibes that he will have to portray something extremely giggle-worthy (and thus spicy) next season. that tiktok at penn where he almost gave spoilers? 'there's some crazy stuff, some iconic scenes in there' and his smile was GUILTY AF. yeah, crazy stuff could be a showdown with vecna or a lore reveal. but would that make him BLUSH???? and it could be *just* a masturbation fantasy scene (would love that for the narrative too), but then we also now seeing finn blushing furiously and flickering his eyes around during press like he's in an interrogation room whenever s5 is mentioned. it just screams 'two friends and coworkers who know they have to get it on on-screen' to me.

even with the recent anon sharing how surprised they were to find that more people didn’t see mike as a bottom, i get how it could come across as invalidating if they weren’t coming from a place of clearly knowing theyre in the minority of opinions. imagine someone saying that around the dinner table with friends. its funny, its a differing take, sure its a little over confident but it’s not rude to anyone - even with an opposing outlook myself i think it sparks fun conversation when someone else is shocked theyre the odd one out. i’m more curious than offended. i may be naive and giving them the benefit of the doubt, but this is often the tone i perceive when i see pro bottom mike posts. i think they’re pretty aware of what the common opinion is.

from my now 1.5 years on the nsfw side, it seems like there’s always going to be an assumption from someone that people sharing opinions about a more subby mike are being spiteful, rude, or trying to be divisive.

you say no one is better, but seem to have a very low tolerance for posts about bottom mike. having the preference is okay, but only if they come with the perfect angelic attitude about it. i’d say we don’t hold the same standard for bottom will posters - and it makes sense that you’re not gonna perceive a (pretty consistent) negative, superior attitude if you’re nodding along to the sentiment.

i read the tags you wrote about millie in a post yesterday (i think you deleted the post because i cant find it now) and i just wanted to say im glad theres someone who shares similar thoughts as me. i love millie but i cant even say anything on twitter without her toxic stans accusing me of misogyny and insulting her intelligence, even though thats not my intention.

if byler is canon, how do you think she’ll feel about it? im asking because your perspective is interesting! i think shes going to take it a bit personally because she strongly relates to her character and wants el to be on the same path as her (like getting married young). its understandable though, considering her upbringing.

I actually took it off my blog because the other day I resolved the issue of my tags not archiving—but when it got resolved, my blog ended up square in the middle as “top blogs” with the full mlvn name tag because I hadn’t been abbreviating their ship in the tag I used before ☠️ that said, I changed the tag to “anti mlvn�� so I could keep myself out of mlvn corners, but a lot of the recent posts that I kept under the old tag are gone or private until tumblr tracks the change—hence the missing post!

Still...me and that tag rant was giving “why would you say something so controversial, yet so brave” for sure (lmao), though I certainly meant it less as a comment on her life decisions themselves and more a "I can tell by the decisions you make as a creator, producer of other films, and in general that you are not The Duffer Brother's target audience, but a lot of your fans can't" kind of way...which is still controversial in several corners of this fandom for sure. 😭

Like, yes, she does play a principal character in the show, but playing a character does not mean the character is modeled to you as a person—just look at Emilia Clarke playing Daenerys Targaryen, Anthony Hopkins playing Hannibal Lecter, or even Rachel McAdams playing Regina George lmao.

Despite playing El since she was a child, as Millie has come into adulthood it's become clearer that she is very different from El—and that The Duffers aren't creating Eleven's arc with Millie's own "coming of age" in mind. Her choices to create things like Enola Holmes, Damsel, and even Nineteen Steps (her new book) showing up as sharp contrasts to not only the women in Stranger Things, but in all of The Duffer's upcoming work on Death Note, The Talisman and The Boroughs prove that well enough, which would be zero problem at all...if a lot of her fans didn't conflate Millie with El is as a character.

To your point though...I honestly don't think Millie is going to be all that personally upset if El ends up single and Byler happens—she's already made clear that she loves El, but is ready to move on and tell other stories and that she would have written the story as a high school drama if she was in control of the direction of the plot (while pointing out that she's not the one in control of it) lol.

Even what she said recently in an widely published and official Seventeen interview shows that she's really just here to finish the story and move on with her career—that she's ready for her role as El (and the drama I'm 10000% sure comes with that) to be done:

At least to me, all of that makes it seem like she is a level-headed young woman who can handle her character not being aligned with how she would live her own life—and will, when the time comes.

That said: imo the real problem is that fans of MBB are confusing Millie's own "I can be young, strong and still have a man" creative and life choices with El's "I am overcoming the bounds men have put on me to become strong by myself" storyline, which only becomes an issue when Millie jokes about things like mlvn getting married—

—and (by nature of being an influential celebrity) ends up with fans who mistake Millie's headcanons (because...honestly that's what they are) based on what she enjoys in fiction as what The Duffers are writing & planning for the ending of Stranger Things.

Basically: as an actress, it's literally MBB's job to bring life to stories that don't necessarily reflect her own values or desires, and she knows it—but because she's been playing the character on people's screens so long (and from a young age) a lot of fans have issues separating the woman from the fiction and recognizing that (as Adam Driver once said) it's not Millie's job to have a feeling about or even agree with who El is as a person—it's her job to bring El & The Duffer's vision to life, even if her life informs how she plays the role.

None of that is particularly Millie's fault (though she, like Noah sometimes, adds fuel to fandom fire with the jokes she makes lmao), though it does get irritating to navigate when you're constantly subjected to arguments rooted in nothing but headcanons when trying to make sense of The Duffer's work itself lmao.

TL;DR - Mills joking about El and Mike getting married feels the same as someone here putting their headcanon out into the world about married & domestic Byler—only, because she's the face of Eleven + has now gotten engaged young herself, people misinterpret her own "cute headcanons" as canonical fact, leaving people who love the actual canon + who enjoy the 'style of womanhood' the Duffers write to arguing with people who misunderstand the actual characters.

Millie is a woman whose had a complicated relationship with celebrity and fame since she was a very young girl, and she has certainly made different decisions than I have (and likes different fiction than I do)—but that has nothing to do with her intelligence or ability to respond gracefully to the character she's played since 12 turning out differently than she would have imagined it if she had written El herself. If and when Byler happens, I'm sure she will meet the reality of it with respect and consideration, even if her fans (and hardcore fans of mlvn) don't lmao.

I interpret the narrative in this way for now, I don't think Mike was lying and I think he's been pretty honest during his conversations with El and Will and that's all I'm saying, even if I was the only one interpreting it that way I would still be allowed to post it on the byler tag because I am a byler making theories like all of you even if you don't agree with those theories

Ya know, you had a really fun idea with those unpopular opinion polls, but it doesn't make you the boss. Not everyone will agree that bi Mike is a valid option, the same way we also don't agree straight Mike is a valid option, no matter how many biased polls you make to force everyone to. The results are in. You can of course make a post arguing that bi Mike is valid as hell, but scolding people for disagreeing like a disappointed primary school teacher is not a good look.

What results are in? 63% are saying it could go either way, even if some of those 63% lean towards gay mike. Those of you saying bi Mike isn't valid at all seem like a super loud minority.

I'm not saying you have to think bi Mike is a valid option either btw. That was the point of the poll. But to say that anyone else that has a different interpretation than you must be wrong, or must not be paying attention to the show (when you KNOW as Bylers, we definitely are paying attention to the show) is a little demeaning and dismissive.

Just think we should try to be a little more respectful with our language since this is a shared space for people that believe both. Also...I'm definitely not trying to be the boss lmao.
