Honestly I think Ragnar the Rock should've been a viking. I mean, he already has a viking name. But more importantly it would reduce the xenophobia vibes the franchise gives me
#like in the movies specifically there aren't any viking enemies as far as i'm aware?#thw has a bit of american patriotism vibes. at least to me#i mean the antagonists are two slavs and asian. can it be more obvious#not entirely sure about grimmel tho. everyone says he's russian because of the accent but#i don't know how a russian accent would sound in Old Norse#i don't think the writers even thought of that. everyone probably speaks only english#listen with stories set in history xenophobia is kinda expected. except httyd is anything but historicaly accurate#ragnar the rock#httyd ragnar#the warlords#httyd#httyd 3#httyd movies#how to train your dragon#how to train your dragon 3#how to train your dragon: the hidden world

I've never heard Superman sing and don't see how that label applies here. But, Tom had voice and guitar lessons before filming I Saw the Light. He is adept at multiple accents, has an ear for them, and has vast experience speaking in iambic pentameter.
I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised that yes, Tom can sing in a foreign language. Is it because they don't have a background in singing? Well hey, singing is something I know a fair bit about.
It's a very common to sing in foreign languages or with nonsense sounds even. It's good for warming up your mouth and increases clarity. Plus, there are so many amazing songs from around the world. I've personally sung in English, German, Spanish, Latin, Hebrew, Sindarin, Quenya, Romanian, French, Japanese, and Italian... that's just off the top of my head.
Tom has publically sung in English, Spanish, Italian, Russian, and now Old Norse? Norwegian? He likes to go to karaoke bars apparently. He's gone to press events in so many countries and learned a few phrases to greet/thank the audience, in French, Spanish (he appears to be semi-fluent in these first two), Italian, German, Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, Russian, sign language (British, I think), and of course he studied Greek and Latin in university.
Singing is a very efficient way to memorize things. I have trouble memorizing since a brain injury ten years ago but can still learn things by singing them. Since Tom is an aspiring polyglot that enjoys singing and dancing I have little doubt that he's probably sung in most, if not all, the languages he's studied. Also, I'm sure that the nerd was probably studying Old Norse on his own as research for Loki as soon as he was cast.
The nice thing is that you can find videos of all this relatively easily on YT. I didn't find the Japanese this time but I know he spoke a couple phrases for Skull Island press with Larson and Jackson. SLJ said good morning in Japanese (it was night time), and Tom realized he'd messed up instantly. I think I was living in Tokyo at the time or it was recently enough from moving back to the States that I still understood a bit at the time.
In conclusion, of course Tom picked this song up instantly. He has the training, it's not a difficult skill, and I instantly recognized his voice. I'm very glad they let him sing it rather than hiring a separate voice actor but I'm pissed off that they didn't credit him in the credits for it. (There's no "sung by" with the song info.)
Tom Hiddleston is superman
