“Ah, this next trainee is someone very talented but maybe a very big surprise for you guys.” The older man smiled behind his hand, “but I think you will like her.”

“Her?” Zico tilted his head, “but it’s a boy competition, no?”

“Yes, but I think she will do well with these concepts and since she’s been training for a while I think she deserves a chance here.” The man nodded.

“Whoa.” Eunji nearly tripped over a rock as she followed the path through the woods. “You know, this is kind of creepy.”

Her head was tilted upwards as she watched the sunlight reach between the trees, he hand held up to shield her eyes. She smiled to herself at the slight heat she felt whenever she passed under the rays.

“This is so cool.” She nodded, “but still creepy.”

Rain laughed, “she looks very young, and innocent.”

“She is young,” Bang PD nodded, “but when she performs it’s like another side of her comes out. You’ll see.”

As she entered the building her hands began to shake - she was fully aware that she was about to walk into a room full of nothing but boys. Sure, she’d trained with boys under the company but now she’d be living with them for however long. That was entirely different.

She took a deep breath before following the hallway and stepping out onto the platform. Her eyes scanned the boys sitting down, a small smile on her face and a twinkle in her eyes as she recognized a few of the trainees.

“Hello!” She waved both hands in front of her, bowing at the boys in front of her. The platform before her began moving forward suddenly and her eyes widened while her arms shot out to her sides as if she was balancing on a beam, “oh! That’s fun.”

“I thought, why is a girl here? She seems nice but I was uncertain about her place.” Geonu frowned.

She took a seat next to one of the boys she recognized earlier, Lee Heeseung was someone she frequently bumped into at the company.

“Hi, Heeseung.” She smiled up at the older boy, her hands still shaking as she felt the eyes on her.

He smiled back before looking away as a chime forced everyone’s attention toward the screen in front of them. The number previously stuck on twelve had moved up to thirteen, causing a lot of the boys to exclaim.

Her head tilted, “ah, that’s interesting.”

“Jiji, what are you doing here?” Heeseung leaned over to whisper, not that it did any good since there were mics practically everywhere in the room.

“I was invited to compete.” She shrugged, “it’ll be fun, right?”

Heeseung nodded, bumping his shoulder into hers before focusing his attention back on the boys to his left. Eunji turned to her other side, sending a smile to one of the boys she made eye contact with.

“I know what they must’ve thought, but I came to compete. I want to debut so if this gives me a chance at that then I don’t mind that it’s a boy competition.” Eunji firmly nodded, a smile on her face.

When it came time for everyone to perform and vote, Eunji sighed. She knew she had practiced meticulously for this moment but she was still nervous about if the boys would vote fairly for her. It didn’t help that the vote was very public and everyone knew who you’d vote for.

She watched as people went up one on one, and she voted for who she felt deserved it the most.

“I tried to vote based on not only skill, but also potential. We’re all trainees so we won’t be perfect but it’s important to always keep growing.” Eunji explained.

There was only one spot left in I-LAND by the time Eunji had her turn. She took a deep breath as the platform moved her towards the entrance so she could perform. She made eye contact with Heeseung, someone she had voted for without a single doubt in her mind. He nodded at her encouragingly and she smiled.

She took another deep breath before setting her face and getting into position. She had chose to sing and dance to one of Stray Kids songs that she knew well. As she began she tried not to let the stares get to her, but their gazes felt scrutinizing. She was sure she hadn’t messed up at all but as the song came to a close she wasn’t so sure by the look on some of their faces.

“She’s very good at the tougher concepts.” Rain nodded, “I expected her style to be softer but she’s very strong.”

“Yeah, she looks very innocent and then when she performs she’s strong and confident.” Zico agreed.

She stared at her feet as if they were the most interesting thing as the voting began, her heartbeat loud in her ears. She was sure they could hear it from her mic. As the announcement started she closed her eyes and clenched her fists by her side.

“Ma Eunji… IN.” She released a deep breath and bowed.

She took her spot next to Heeseung back, the ground beneath her feet lighting up white. He wrapped an arm around her shoulder and shook her lightly, “we’ll be together, Jiji!”

She smiled at him, nodding almost shyly.

“Ah, Heeseung and I trained together for a small period of time and when we didn’t anymore he stayed my friend. I think I’m very comfortable with him.” Eunji explained as staff asked about her friendship with him, “I felt better knowing we’d be in I-LAND together.”

“Jiji?” One of the boys sitting next to Heeseung asked, his voice shy but curious. Eunji couldn’t help but stare for a moment, the man was gorgeous.

Eunji blinked and then smiled, “it’s what everyone calls me. I’m Ma Eunji, it’s nice to meet you..”

“Park Sunghoon.” He filled in the blank, “yeah, it’s nice to meet you too. You did really well up there.”

She flushed, “ah, it was okay.”

“Okay?!” The boy next to him exclaimed, his eyes wide, “you did amazing! I’m Jay.”

“Are you from the US?” Her eyes widened, asking in English.

“Yeah! Where are you from?” He responded back, just as enthused to meet someone from where he grew up.

“Los Angeles.” She smiled, “LA!”

“Seattle.” He smiled, “you have an accent when you talk in English.”

“I haven’t spoken English in a long time actually. I moved to Korea when I was eleven, and before that we only spoke Korean at home so that’s probably why.” She explained.

“Ah, my Jiji has forgotten about me.” Heeseung placed a hand on his chest and fell backwards dramatically. “She’s replaced me for an American.”

The four of them laughed, and Eunji realized she might like I-LAND more than she thought.

JIA: “Ah, I think I’ll talk too much but sure!”

HEESEUNG (JISEUNG):

“Ahh, Heeseung! He’s the best! He takes care of me the most, I think. He can be really protective and sometimes it annoys me but I know it’s only because he wants to keep me safe. I don’t think my life would be the same if it weren’t for him. I only have older sisters so it’s nice to have someone I can call my older brother too!”

JAY (JONGIA):

“Jay! He’s very quiet around me but it’s because he’s observing. You might not think it but he takes care of me in his own way! When I need peace and quiet he’s right there for me to sit with. In public? He never stays very far. He’s always watching my surroundings because I tend to forget to watch out. I appreciate the safety I feel with him.”

JAKE (JIYUN):

“My dude! I call him that. Him and Jay are my English buddies for life! We like talking in English when it’s just us. His hugs are the most comforting to me so when I need some comfort he’s who I go to. He doesn’t even need to say anything to let me know he’s there for me, I already know.”

SUNGHOON (JIHOON):

“Hoonie! I love talking about him, so I’ll try to keep it short so I don’t ramble. We always do skincare together, and he teaches me a lot about taking care of myself like that. He’s the one that always takes my makeup off for me, even when I’m not tired! He has his own way of showing he cares for me, same as everyone else. He’s really special to me.”

SUNOO (SUNJI):

“My personal sun! Just like the sun he’s always warm with me! Even in I-LAND he was one of the people I felt the most comfortable around. He always goes the extra mile for me to feel comfortable and he has no issue arguing with the staff about my outfits. He’s my go-to person for cuddles and laughs. Don’t tell the others but I think he’s my best friend!”

JUNGWON (JIWON):

“If I talk about him too much other people will like him and he’s only for me! *Laughs*. He’s my favorite person, truly. He’s always there to hold my hand or encourage me when I don’t feel confident about something. Also, like Heeseung, he’s protective! I know that I can always count on him, and I think if I didn’t have him in my life I would hate it. He makes me smile more than anyone else.”

“We were born in the same year but I’m older so I always make fun of him for it. But he makes fun of my height so it’s fair! He’s my favorite person to dance with, and I feel like we always learn from each other. People think he’s intimidating but he’s actually the biggest softy ever. He’s the first person to buy me a stuffed animal, did you know? He’s always getting me random gifts, and he likes to make me food in the mornings. He’s really sweet with me!”

JIA: “I do, they’re the best! I think that everyone needs people like them in their lives. I’ve never been happier than when I’m with them.”
