i need someone to explain why people are mad about the concept of journalism behind a paywall if you don’t have a subscription when in The Olden Days before the internet you had to pay to take newspapers out of those little cages on the street if you weren’t subscribed and getting it delivered. like, it’s exactly the same situation but digitized

#personal #there's a LOT i can complain about when it comes to american journalism these days #(tho i think i'm a lot more lenient than my fellow partisans just cuz i have a lot of journalist friends)#but the concept of 'please pay for the work that someone's done the way you've had to since the concept of a newspaper was invented'#is not that odd or egregious to me by any stretch of the imagination #i don't have a subscription to wapo so if there are times i can't read wapo stories i'm just like 'ah well what a bummer'#like sorry that ya gotta pay for the labor because people need to make money on their jobs i guess?#but it's still not a violation of the geneva conventions now that it's on the internet rather than the little street cages
