Reading SVSSS: Bonus- Chapter 23

For those who don't know, I am reading SVSSS for the first time and sharing my thoughts!

If you have not read it, there will be spoilers! Consider this a warning.

Let's get in to the succubi chapter!!!

I haven't even started this chapter yet and the title is already giving me fantasy porn energy; "Recalling an Experience of Fighting Succubi with Great Master Liu".

Shen Qingqiu over here feeling anxious for "some reason" about his romantic future (this man is so deep in the closet at this point). p69. It makes me laugh that anytime he talks about women in this book he's like "nope, cant, not her because [Insert Reason]" without fail.

You cannot tell me Liu Qingge is not some shade of queer. The way in which he leaned in for the T about SQQ's love life speaks to my soul on a spiritual level p70

Another bonus chapter done!

This one was short and sweet, but I do love getting more insight into the lore of the book. I love it when we get to see new creatures or learn how the world works and this chapter was cool for that. I cannot wait for the next one though- I took a peak at the title and saw that it is in parts so here's to hoping the next one is longer!

Hi! Do you have any thoughts on Mac and Mrs. Mac’s relationship? I find the whole McDonald family dynamic so interesting, but especially after season 16/frank shoots every member of the gang I’ve been fascinated by those two. You always have such impressive, well thought out answers!

I do have a lot of of thoughts regarding Mac's upbringing, especially in terms of his relationships with his family and how they clearly affect his current-day relationships and misconceptions of love, but I'm not sure I've really fleshed that out so, great question.

First of all, I have a gripe with Frank Shoots Every Member of the Gang, as it really insanely retcons Luther's age. Mac Kills His Dad established that he was 59 at the time, which would have made him a teen when he had Mac. Shoots establishes that Luther's dad served in WWII and wrote him letters during that time, which means he had to have been born before 1945, and would have been at youngest in his 30s when Mac was born. It's not like it's a huge issue, but it does change some previously-thought dynamics. (Though, the fact that they weren't younger-cast in A Sunny Christmas does better-align with the idea that they were in their 30s when they had Mac.)

There was/is always kind of the vibe that when they were together, pre-Luther going to jail, Ms. Mac did really love Luther and vice-versa, and Mac was more kind of like a by-product of unprotected sex more than he was a part of the family. (I mean, they named him after the Hamburger Clown). Luther clearly love(d) him as the idea of having a son, someone who could carry on his bidding and his name, but doesn't love him as the child he actually has. I think Ms. Mac didn't love him as the idea of a son and doesn't love him as the child she has, and never did. BUT she did love Luther, and Mac observed that as a young kid, his parents loving each other but neglecting him. Looking at Christmas, we can kind of assume the order of anything in Mac's childhood home was Ms. Mac > Luther > Mac. So for his early development he was kind of sidelined, saw no love from his parents toward him, but did see love between his parents (in a definitely not healthy way, as it goes).

We know in the deleted scenes of Sunny Christmas that Mac's dad is going to prison probably right after the events of the video tape... I honestly think it's reasonable to assume that Mac's screaming that woke up the residents of the house they were robbing might have been probably was what led to Luther being arrested (with whatever warrants he had hanging over him catching up with him once he had been detained). So, does Ms. Mac blame her son for her husband being locked up for the next 25 years? Probably. She didn't even want him, didn't care for him, and then his obnoxious behaviour was their downfall.

Back to Shoots, I did really like it for what it gave us in terms of (Char)Mac childhood lore. I think it definitely wasn't a shock for them to drop the cigarette lighter line, but it was a hit to the chest for me. Everything I kind of assumed before, re: didn't want or care about having a child equated to strictly-neglectful, Mac clawing for the love he saw his mom give his dad, now with his dad gone even more-so, and being brushed off, now escalated to retaliation in response to Mac failing to be brushed off. Sometimes the dismissive, grunting and not moving from your chair approach just doesn't work on a hyperactive little bastard like Mac, sometimes you have to make him shut up by giving him something else to fuss over. I think Ms. Mac probably hoped that would be what breaks through his skin, makes him realise she doesn't love him, but Mac only sees it as a warning, a pause, a try-again-later, mom's just in a bad mood.

Presently, what we see of Ms. Mac is almost always the same: completely indifferent. Shrug, cough, I don't care at all about you. Mac's a serial killer? Yeah. Mac's dead? Ok. You're gay? Meh. She'll fuck with him though, sure: your dad is actually Dutch. You wanted these letters that meant something to your father? I needed toilet paper. Who cares. She doesn't love him, never has, never will, and Mac has no ability to understand that.

Based on his upbringing and the past 20 years, I think he has a complete misunderstanding (and at this point inability) to recognise and understand what love is, mostly because of his mother. Because she just, doesn't love him, never did, but Mac thinks that parents have to love their children, that's a fact in his mind. If he has a mom and a dad they do love him, they have to, especially when he was a little boy, right? His dad loves him, he's just in jail so he can't show it, but his mom is here. And mom did love dad, he remembers that, he saw it, so he just has to make himself known, she can love him too because she's capable of it and she's his mom. He loves her, he says it over and over, she never says it, but she just doesn't see him because she's busy, working, or making a home for him, or just for some reason she's not paying attention... So love for Mac is fighting neglect, love is refusing to be ignored, love is pestering over and over because if you can get away with your bombardment without a finger being raised, without being scored by a cigarette lighter, they must really want you to continue... they must be waiting for you to really prove yourself before they show or admit their love for you. There are people in his life who have to love him, it's like a law, so they'll admit it as long as you keep asking, keep making yourself known, keep trying to prove yourself... and if it comes to the point where you're getting burned, stop for a minute, take a step back, and reevaluate how (or when) you can try again...

tbh i would still disagree with you!! that's not really what Evangelicals believe, although I'm not Evangelical myself so I could be wrong. but my understanding is that they also believe in the idea that sin can be forgiven. the problem lies in their idea of what constitutes a sin, not the idea that you cannot be cleansed from it. you can be forgiven from your sin as soon as you stop sinning! of course, by "stop sinning" they frequently mean like... "stop being gay" or "stop being jewish". But to say that the problem with Christianity is that the theology doesn't support redemption and forgiveness is just factually untrue. That's like... the whole Bible. It's mostly about forgiveness (and sometimes about how rich people are bad and the very occasional weird sex things)

Also, I would say that the fact that angels CAN fall would suggest that they DO have free will? I don't think there's anywhere in the Bible that says that angels DON'T have free will, but that might be because like... angels really aren't that important? Their relative moral quality (or that of devils) isn't discussed much in the Bible, because like... idk who cares?? its not a book about how cool angels are and here's all their lore. theyre just god's employees. i mean, im no theologian, but from what i remember from church, jesus and his pals are the main characters of the bible, and appearances from angels are just kind of... serviceable and incidental? to me, complaining about the theological implications of the angels is like worrying about the theological implications of jesus's donkey. that's not really who in the story you're supposed to be looking at for a reflection on how God views you, or how you're supposed to behave. tbh i kinda feel like supernatural and good omens being so popular on tumblr has given people an outsized sense of how much the actual theology cares about angels. like... idk theyre neat i guess? but its not really a foundational element of the church, at least not in my experience.

This discussion ends up frustrating me a lot, because I feel like there's no way to address any actual problems with Christianity if we just lie about what it's like. If the entire theology was founded upon "there's no way to come back from sin sorry :/ guess you're fucked", why would anyone believe in it? why would people ever convert to that? are we under the assumption that every single christian is just a huge idiot who cant understand their own religion? how do we benefit critically from assuming that's the case? how can we even seek to fix any problems of the christian church if we keep making up what the problems are? and why are you giving people an argument that's so easy to refute? like... ok imagine there's a local restaurant where you KNOW the employees never wash their hands. if you go around being like "that restaurant is bad because their burgers are made with horse meat!", the owners of the restaurant are just gonna go "no? its not made with horse meat" and then continue to never wash their hands. why are we lying!!!

i hate that post about how theres fallen angels in christianity but no risen devils bc christian theology teaches sin is inescapable and you'll never make up for it. like that is fully not true??? the foundations of christianity are that sin is unavoidable because we are fallible humans but that you can always be forgiven. i mean, the parable of the prodigal son? the lost lamb? the sacrament of confession? any of these ringing any bells?

Hello! Sometimes I see you post stuff from IF blogs and I've recently started playing some IF games, which I've enjoyed so far. Do you have any IF stories you'd recommend in particular? I'm not attached to any particular genre and I don't need romance or a self-insert main character, (though I'm not opposed to either). Though, it's a definite plus if it's LGBTQ+ inclusive! I'm not really sure what the "cornerstones" are of IF so I'll take any and all recommendations haha

Oh god, I play so many IFs. So many. And it’s not even close to all of them, but I’m trying!!

Tbh IFs without romance seems to be very rare, I think because when I think IF I think Choice of Games, and those pretty much always have romance in them. At least, the most well known ones do. But a well done one without romance would be nice too!

Okay, this is a list of my favourites! They’re all LGBT+ inclusive, and most have gender selectable love interests, or at least ones that change gender depending on the gender and sexuality combination you pick. In no particular order, of course.  Behind a cut because I’m gonna give them each a mini review. Because I haven’t done that yet.

Mind Blind: I absolutely love our big brother Nick, I love how witty and sharp so much of the dialogue is, I love how the MC clearly has a rather large handicap, but is still such an important person to so many people and not looked down on in the slightest. And when they are, we all know it’s because that person is a jerk! They’re not defined by what they aren’t, but what they are, and that’s a great message.

Shepherds of Haven: Part of why I love this one so much is I just love fantasy settings and this one just pulls it off so well. The cast is full of amazing characters, and I gotta say I die inside pretty regularly for not being able to afford the patreon content, lol. The author puts so much amazing stuff on there, and gives us so much great content in the game and through answers on tumblr, and you can tell this whole thing is just the best thing ever to them, and that makes it the best ever for us readers too!

The Wayhaven Chronicles: I’d be shot if I didn’t mention this one, the series that literally killed dashingdon when the book 3 demo dropped!! Again, another author that cares a lot and does their best to do right by their fans. We’ve been given drip after drip of these amazing characters backstories, and I just cannot wait for more! It’s definitely very romance centered, but the overall plotlines are also very good, and I have to say that no matter who I romance, I just feel like the group as a whole is a family. And that’s wonderful.

Speaker: I really like the lore. I really like the lore. I can’t wait until we get more of the overall plotline. Mostly I want my Speaker to get in deep trouble so Seb, Li and Seer (best sister ever) go off and beat the shit out of whatever is causing it. This probably says something about me, but what can I say, I thrive on angst and inflicting near death injuries on my OCs. Sometimes I even kill them, although all of this is offtopic. Or is it? I guess we’ll find out, although I doubt we’ll actually be able to kill off Speaker. And yes, I am definitely playing the Seb & Li poly route. I love them both so much. 

Wilhelmina: I love vampires, ok? Ok? And this one is based off Dracula!! The OG!! And you can choose Drac’s gender!! Shit, sign me up forever!! Yeah, she might be literally killing my bff, torturing my fiancé and low key fucking with my mind, but vampires are hot!! Let me live! Or not. But yeah, this is a really well done retelling of the Dracula novel and I like how well it works as an IF. Did I mention I like vampires?? Especially when they get all monstery?? (This one has an MC with a set gender, as it’s based on an already existing literary figure. Mina can have a same sex relationship with dracula, if you make drac a female, or with Lucy, a female love interest.)

More Things in Heaven and Earth: Hi Nell!! First off, I gotta uncover a deep shame of mine. My family literally has a Shakespeare heirloom collection. As in, my greatgrandfather passed down through the family a collection of Shakespeare that was published in 1911. In ye olde englishe. I tried to read it when I was like 10 and was like what language is this?? What the fuck? What the fuck??? And ended up reading As You Like It, a bit of Romeo and Juliet, and a little of Hamlet. Didn’t touch the rest of it. I only got into the other stories through trashy ya reimaginings. That said, this retelling of Hamlet inspired me to go read the whole of the original and now I have a lot of fears for these characters that I’m so much more attached to, oh god I hope my Ophelia has a happy ending. I hope Hamlet himself has a happy ending. The dialogue is so well done, everyone is engaging, and yeah it made me finish an old af book when nothing else did. (This one also has an MC with a set gender, female, for the same reason. However, there are two gender variable love interests, so you can very much play a bi or gay Ophelia if you so choose.)

Guenevere: I love King Arthur. All the myths. I have so many books based on the King Arthur mythos, oh dear god. I love pretty much every version of it. All the movie and tv shows too! I just can’t get enough of those knights. I could go on for paragraphs about how courtly love worked and how all the different social castes were, but I’ll try not to. This series lets you customize Guen as a character to an amazing degree, considering that she’s also based on an actual literary figure like the other two I mentioned above. It really feels like she becomes your own character, and yet she still exists within this world very very well. I worry quite a bit that the author might have bit off more than they can chew with the current book they’re working on, what I’ve seen of it looks absolutely massive in scale. What is out so far is a wonderful read though, full of drama and laughter and lots of chances to make the story your own.

Bastard of Camelot: Yep! Another King Arthur series! Sue me! This one lets you set Mordred’s gender though, so it’s more inclusive in that way. It is very interesting to play as one of the “bad guys” of the King Arthur mythos. You can play them as straight up evil, as good, or you know, a bit of column a and a bit of column b. Or they can just be a rude little shit. It’s got dragons too! You get a dragon pet! Dragons are cool. It can be a bit tough to play sometimes, since a lot of people dislike Mordred quite a lot because of prejudices. Hopefully this will change a bit later in the series if you’ve been a fairly good person up to that point. Gotta say though, as a warning, that Mordred is a product of incest. It’s not glossed over, and it does cause a lot of problems for them in the story.

God of the Red Mountain: I just love that this inspired me to read more chinese mythology tbh. There is just so much here! And it’s just such a good read. I wish I was better at describing things. The MC being a spirit that you can define, the whole setting, most of the love interests also being spirits, the massive amount of history and culture and lore, how it all fits together. It is such a well done story. I really wish it got more attention than it does. I still miss Big Sister. I still can’t wait to find out more about the foxes, and how we can heal our MC.

The Nameless: Another one that lets you play as something otherworldly. I love the lore behind this one, and I love all of the cast I’ve met. I kind of like that our MC isn’t loved right off the bat, that we’ll have to win over all of our love interests and even the other npcs. I’m up for the challenge! Everything I’ve read on the tumblr for these characters just makes me love them all more tbh. I love how much they’ve written for all of them! Most of all though, I love Oisein. All the art of them is just *chef kiss* and their personality is magical.

A Mage Reborn: This is a really recent one but!! Wow, it’s really well done! That cliffhanger!! Oof!! Not many books literally start with killing your MC off! That takes guts! I told the author this already, but I love the way they formatted this, the way it starts with the end, so to speak, and then fills it all out. It just made everything feel so poignant, how MC is literally looking back at all these moments in time in the last minutes they have before they die. Shit. That’s powerful. And there’s gonna be more??? Can’t wait for that angst. Give me that drama. Of course I picked the one who had me killed, that’s just how I am!

These are all just the COG type games, there are a few twine games with graphics I’d throw on here, but the list is long enough as it is and they feel like they’re in a different category to me. Maybe it’s just me?

Hi, I don't want to start anything, but i think that you have been fetishizing (male) gay characters. You only ever repost about gay characters and are only present in fandoms that have either canon gay characters/ships or strongly suggest them. I scrolled through your blog and it just caught my attention that is all. Maybe you should consider this and see what you have been doing wrong.

I hope that what I'll tell you makes you understand the how and why of what you seem so concerned about.

But first things first:

I do not and never will think of any gay male character/ship that you can see on my dash as someone I think of sexually and would never, ever force another sexuality on them

I am not only ace, but I have great respect for these characters. I sympathize with them. I can understand their problems. Homophobia, the fear of coming out, toxic families that cannot be seen being less than perfect.

I understand that. I assume you are most concerned about my recent re-fascination of the Dragon Age character Dorian. Whom I will use as an example for the next part.

Dorian is canonically gay. He comes from a difficult family situation. He finds confidence in his appearance and humor. He is strikingly brilliant and goddamn intelligent. He managed to get not only a canon relationship if you romance him, but also a canon relationship if you don't. He's growing throughout the game. He shows that sometimes distance is needed to heal from a toxic situation. He wants to bring his corrupted homeland on the right path.

This is what makes me like him so much. And not in a fucked up sexual version, but in the "I want to drink good wine and talk shit about other people with him" version. I understand him and his problems. His humor makes me laugh, which is what makes a character, really any character, likeable. I think of him as someone who would be a great friend and close confidant. I admire his ambition and his intelligence.

As you can see, when I listed what I thought about him, I did not once refer to the fact that he looks good. What I do not deny. He's a very handsome character. However, that is not why I like him. Hell, he could be a bald egg and I would still think of him in the same way. Not at all in any sexual sense.

This is the same with most characters that I repost stuff about. And if they do not fit that particular category, I simply admire their relationship. I am in a great and loving relationship myself and I am happy, when I see a character that I simply adore in a relationship that makes them happy. Simple as that. I do not much care for the sexual aspects of any relationship, real life, canon, headcanon or whatever. If they are happy, I am happy. It's the same for you is it not? When you read a book and you get all those fuzzy warm feelings when the characters that danced around each other finally get together. Nothing sexual here, there or anywhere.

But why do you not feel the same for lesbian or heterosexual female characters, you may ask yourself.

The answer is simple: I do not know of any lesbian or even heterosexual female characters that I understand as much or like. I can hardly name a lesbian character that I actually know or a heterosexual female character that gives me the feeling of "hey, those are my struggles". I find many woman aesthetically pleasing and I can tell when someone is fucking hot, but I still do not want to see them have sex or have sex with them.

Example 1:

I adore Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel). I think she is badass and, as shallow as it sounds, looks great. Yet, I cannot sympathize with her. My own most prominent struggles are not hers. She is not prominent enough in my watching/re-watching nerd list for me to have a solid opinion on her character. I saw her in like two movies and a few one-liners in the marvel comics I've read. Which does not make her, aside from what I've mentioned, a character I care more about than many other characters I come across.

Example 2:

Bill Potts from Doctor Who. Probably the only lesbian character I know enough about to say, hey, she's pretty neat. She's likeable, because she makes me laugh. But I don't really know much of her background and ambitions or better, I cannot name them, because I've watched her season exactly once and never got into her "lore" so to speak. I like her, tho. She's a cutie that can put up with the Doctor's shit. But as you can see, I don't really have a solid opinion on her character.

Example 3 (more detailed):

Isabelle Lightwood and Clary Fray. Both are great and important characters in the TMI universe (I'll go with the TV show here, because that's most prominent in my mind at the moment). I, and god save me that I'm saying that out loud, do not particularly like Clary. She's too stubborn and reckless for me to say, yes, that's a character I like. I do not share her mindset. I do not share her humor. I do not sympathize with her at all. I never lost my mom, I never found out my dad's a genocidal maniac or that my brother is a demon. In short, I do not vibe with her. Many do and I can see that if you yourself are more the heads on approach personality, you would understand her reasons and characteristics. I do not.

Izzy is a strong woman. I admire her for her empathy towards Alec, but her struggles are once again not mine. Needless to say, I can see people shipping them (Clizzy), but I admit that I do not care for them as a ship. I don't love it, but it's also not a NOTP for me. I am just not interested in them as a ship. You can put it in a fic and I will not care. They are good for each other in the fic, well, good for them. They should be. Clary is with Jace and Izzy is with whomever? I don't care. Because I do not particularly care for their characters.

I think what you have raised as a concern, is the worst anyone could ever think of me. As I have mentioned in the beginning, I respect these characters. A whole fucking lot. I see my troubles and problems solved in their plotlines and it makes me happy to see that they can be happy. I think of them as characters that would be great friends. I honestly would like to know how you came to the conclusion that I fetishize them. As far as I know, I have never given any indication that I see them in a sexual maner. I repost art and writing, but mostly because I admire the work the artist/author has put into it. I repost text posts because they make me laugh. And because most people are not asexual there might be one or two posts that have some sexual aspects in them. But non of these should be in a fetishizing manner, I am sure of that. And not and never would I repost anything, because I get off on it (which for me, is just not my cup of tea at all. While it may be for others, to whom you should turn your attention to then, if this is concerning for you).

That you "raised this concern" is, as much as you might not want it, starting something. You think because of that phrase, I might not feel awful. You think it does not make me feel horrible for sharing that I like a character for the sake of sympathizing with them. As I stated, what you, and let's name it as it is, accused me off is the worst thing I you can make me think about myself. I have not once seen these characters as something sexual. I do not care for sex at all. Yes, a fetish must not be sexual, but what else could you have meant? I don't think it is wrong to admire a character who is intelligent and shares my humor.

overall... i don't know! there were things i liked, namely the production design which was incredible. i'm definitely going to watch season 2 and i do think *some* of the backlash from fans has been a little overblown, but expecting fallout fans to be normal about lore changes is a losing game LMAO. we're uh... intense. a little. we've been burned, um, a little. just a bit.

i just watched tim cain's review of the series as well, and i do hope that vault-tec didn't *actually* drop the bombs. it makes no sense - why would barb knowingly drop the bombs while her daughter + husband are out at a birthday party??

i DID like that the NCR aren't completely gone bc that made no sense to me... except now i guess they are gone :|

anyway, if nothing else i'm glad that this seems to have awakened all of the dormant fnv fans out there and i hope that this side of fandom picks up more steam. i largely fell off of fallout fandom when it all became fallout 4-centric because that game just... didn't grip me like 3 and NV did. and i hope it brings new people into the franchise and the fandom as well!

i wonder what other existing canon characters will be brought into season 2, if any. new vegas has so many characters i just adore that i'm not sure if i want them to get the tv treatment or not yet!
