I want to talk quickly about teacher pay. It's going to come up a lot I'm sure over the next few days. Teachers have had an (unfunded) pay rise this year (not all teachers have received it yet) and so the starting salary for a teacher is £28,000 outside of London.
Which sounds like a lot I'm sure.
Take home from that with my student loans and pension deductions is about £1,700. Still sounds like a lot, I'm sure.
I looked up the cheapest rent for a 1 bed flat where I used to live. That's now £700. Due to the amount of work you have to do at home, and especially during covid I think it's very difficult for teachers to live in shared houses. Of course some do, but for me, at that point it gets into the territory of "why am I bothering"
So, I worked out what would be left over based on my old bills, except electricity which I used my current bill for, because of price rises.
After essential bills only (including a car because it was essential in that town and mobile+ internet because they are considered essential for teachers by most schools), I worked out said teacher has £480 a month left over.
That's to cover any hobbies, buying clothes, any subscriptions, any money they spend on school stuff (which they will in most schools) any treats like a takeaway or god forbid a night out...
You can see it's not going to go that far. Like, sure, it's doable and you know in your second year of teaching it will go up etc etc.
But equally, when you're looking for jobs to apply to (and there are a lot) you'd potentially discount expensive towns. Maybe you'd live in a city and not have to run a car? Maybe you'd live in a cheaper location? (Maybe you'd decide it's not worth it and opt for that 32k grad scheme instead). (Maybe you'd opt out of your pension).
Anyway perhaps you start to see why some schools in some areas of the country struggle to recruit. In London, the pay is higher of course, but not in other expensive places like Bristol or Oxford etc.
And then equally you start thinking about couples who want to have a family. Childcare is crippling, they need to be able to afford a 2 bed house, even on M3/M4, it looks pretty unaffordable. Maybe one of them goes part time. Maybe one of them switches careers?
The point of this is not to be like "woe are teachers" because I know a lot of people have a lot lower take home pay. My point is that a) teachers are well qualified people with the option to switch careers b) we need teachers to be able to live in every part of the country.
Now, I can only see two possible solutions. Rent controls, or pay teachers more. Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to strike over housing costs, so therefore I'm left with the option of striking over pay.

Hey! For the au + trope + prompt thing, could you do 1 for au, 9 for trope and 27 for prompt with pynch?
(P.S: I just remembered you have already done one with pynch, so you can do this one with another ship of your choosing if this one feels repetitive!)
Roommates AU, strangers to lovers, “that was a very bad idea. 0/10 would not recommend.” ~ for pynch!
I am more than happy to write 10,000 roommate aus for these idiots <3
---
It all started with an only mildly suspicious ad on craigslist:
Roommate needed $275/mo - utilities included must be ok with corvids good w/cars a plus - rent discount if u can prove it
Adam wasn't an idiot. He knew something that was too good to be true when he saw it. He also knew that answering a craigslist ad for a roommate was a good way to get stabbed, robbed, and God only knew what else.
And yet...
Sometimes, when your options were limited it really was better to take every possible avenue to get away from the devil you know - even if that means sharing a small apartment with the devil you don't.
Well, the devil and his pet raven. And really, Chainsaw was by far the more agreeable of the two.
That being said, it wasn't like Ronan was awful. He was an asshole, and he was downright grumpy bastard anytime before 11am. He listened to terrible music, if that trash could ever be considered such. Chainsaw was a sweetheart, though, always bringing Adam new shinies for his approval and sitting with him while he worked on a paper or research or any number of other assignments for his degree.
(Taking the risk that he had by jumping at that craigslist ad meant that he was able to cut back on his hours a little bit at work, go to school full time, and start amassing a savings account.)
And, okay, Ronan probably had some merits too. He could cook, for one thing. Not to say that Adam couldn't cook. He could - he just didn't like to. If it were up to him, he'd probably subsist on saltines and hard-boiled eggs. In fact, he had done exactly that for the first two weeks living with Ronan until the other man had dropped a full plate of breakfast in front of him, stole his crackers, and pointed at him. "Eat like a fucking grown-up," he'd said -and... well, that was that. Sure, Adam had tried to protest, but Ronan had just... started making food for the both of them and maybe if it was shitty food or even mediocre in quality Adam would have been able to ignore it - but it killed something inside Adam to waste food. Especially good food. And Ronan's food was fucking amazing.
So, there was that.
He also wasn't an absolute terror to be around. Having a conversation with Ronan Lynch was a choose-your-own-adventure novel written by very high geniuses. You really never knew what you were going to get and each alternate path was bound to be either completely bat-shit crazy or a humbling level of profound. Not only that, but Ronan didn't pull that alpha-male bullshit so many other men did where they refused to admit they didn't know something. No, when Adam proved that he knew what he was talking about when it came to cars, Ronan just said "teach me?" with such open intensity that Adam couldn't really tell him 'no', alright?
And then there were days like today, where Adam got home from an early shift at the garage to find Ronan sitting halfway out of their third-floor apartment, securing a thick rope to a hook above the window that definitely hadn't been there when Adam left that morning.
"Are you about to do something stupid again?" Adam called up to him as he got out of his car. Upon hearing his voice, Chainsaw (who had been circling anxiously above) crowed out a warbled imitation of speech that sounded a lot like 'Atom' and coasted down to him.
"Me? Stupid? Nah, this is gonna be fucking amazing," Ronan called back without looking away from his work.
Chainsaw landed on Adam's shoulder and clapped her beak affectionately near his ear. Adam dutifully lifted a hand to stroke at the soft feathers of her neck. If he also whispered 'hello beautiful girl, is your papa making trouble for you again?' it was between him and the bird and Ronan would never need to know.
Chainsaw crooned a tense 'kreh!' that Adam took as an affirmative.
"What exactly are you doing, Ronan Lynch?" Adam called up as he took another look at the setup, walking closer to the building. The rope that Ronan had just finished tying to the hook was already secured to a tree on the edge of the parking lot, the one that stood awkwardly out from the rest of the tree line. Their apartment complex was situated right on the edge of a forest preserve. A lot of Ronan's hair-brained ideas usually came back to the forest in one way or another.
"This is just a test run. If I can get it to work right, I'm going to set a line straight into the forest."
"Mm, yes, because... leaving civilization through a door is beneath you?"
Ronan paused, then grinned down at him, the expression somehow both boyish and savage in a way that always made Adam's heart jump for some reason. "Actually, yeah. Literally."
Adam rolled his eyes but didn't bother to fight the smile. "Punk."
"I resent that. I reject all labels, Parrish - you know that."
"Uh-huh. Sure. Well if you-- Ronan what are you doing?"
Ronan had produced what looked like a fucking tie (was that the one Ronan's brother Declan had been wearing when he came by for dinner a couple weeks back?) and had wrapped one end around his hand. As Adam watched, he flicked the loose end of the tie over the taut rope and then wrapped it around his other hand.
"Told you it was a test run, Parrish. That mean's I've actually got to test it."
"Ronan I don't think--"
But it was too late. Ronan had already jumped out of the fucking third-floor window like he was expecting to fly. For a second or two, he sort of did. The rope bowed but supported him and the smooth tie provided little friction as Ronan began to zoom down at a steep angle. Then the rope shuddered and went completely slack, the hook having torn free from the side of the building where it clearly had not been properly anchored. Ronan plummeted like a stone in a still pond.
"Ronan!" Adam did not make the active decision to move, but he was suddenly sprinting to where the jumbled heap of Ronan Lynch had landed on the rough pavement. Chainsaw had already launched ahead and was hopping around near Ronan's head, squawking out anxious reprimands of 'Kerah! Kerah!'
Adam skidded to his knees beside Ronan just as the other man was shakily trying to sit up. "What the FUCK Ronan Lynch!? What were you thinking!? You can't just jump out of a God-forsaken third-floor window like that. Do you want to be killed?" Adam didn't even care that the rural-Virginian flavor of his youth had coated his words in a thick batter, he was so mad.
Ronan blinked at him and there was a strange mix of confusion and pain and... something else on his face. "Scared, Parrish?" The words did not come out as teasing as they normally would.
"Scared? Scared? Of course I was scared. You... you fucking idiot!" Adam had to give himself a moment. He raked his fingers through his hair and took a deep breath, then another. He closed his eyes and tried to center himself. Fear and anger would get him nowhere, even if the fear had already set its nasty little hooks into each and every one of his nerve endings and the anger felt like the only way to burn them away.
A hand touched his shoulder, then his cheek. Adam opened his eyes and Ronan was wearing another indecipherable expression, his dark eyes hooded, his mouth pursed.
"Come on," Adam said as he leaned back so he could stand up. "Can you stand?" Chainsaw continued to hop around, but she'd stopped her distressed shouting, perhaps sensing that Adam was taking control and feeling more comfortable knowing that he would set things to rights, whatever that might mean.
Ronan was quiet for a moment, then seemed to shake himself out of his thoughts before giving a derisive snort. "It was just a little fall, Parrish, I'm --fuck!" Ronan had just tried to stand up, but his knee buckled out from under him as soon as he put his weight on it. "Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck, alright. Alright. Shit. Fuck. That was a very bad idea. 0/10 would not recommend."
"The standing or the stupid fucking stunt you pulled jumping out of a goddamn window?" Adam asked. He attempted to make it as dry as possible, trying to get them back to some kind of equilibrium, but his heart was still racing a bit too fast and he could hear the angry bite in his own words.
Still didn't stop him from instantly stepping forward and catching Ronan, though. He wound an arm around Ronan's waist, guiding Ronan's arm over his shoulders so he could support him.
"The standing, of course. Shit! Ah... fuck. My idea for the apartment-forest zipline is fucking genius thank you."
Adam helped Ronan hobble forward, taking them back toward his car instead of the building. "Yeah. Right. Whatever you say, Lynch."
"Where are we going?"
"To the hospital, dumbass," Adam said with a roll of his eyes, all but shoving Ronan into the passenger seat. He held the door open for Chainsaw to be able to swoop in and land on the idiot's lap. The least Ronan could do was soothe her for the drive.
"You don't have--"
Adam cut him off with a glare. "We. Are. Going. To. The. Hospital. Am I being perfectly clear?"
"...yes." Ronan glared back, but then sank down in his seat, expression mulish.
Adam fixed him with a hard stare that lasted another few heartbeats, then gave a nod and snapped the door shut.
So yes, Ronan Lynch wasn't all that bad. Sometimes the devil you don't really is the better choice. Because sometimes that devil has a cute bird and makes good food and has great conversation. If he also scares the shit out of you on the regular and makes your heart race inexplicably, well, that's not so bad a deal. Right?

Hi Jen. my best friend (22f) recently came out to her family as a lesbian, and while things aren't BAD, she's considering living with my (21f) parents (supportive of me being bi) for a while until she can get herself on her feet. her mother basically told her she's not getting kicked out, but she should consider other options. I've been doing my best to be supportive, but I was wondering if you have any advice for her, as an older lesbian?
It sounds like her parents have sort of fired a warning shot over her bow to let her know that they are not comfortable. She is probably doing the right thing to adjust her plans accordingly.
If she is not in physical danger and her parents are not being emotionally abusive, it might be best if she stays home and just doubles her efforts to save, plan and take steps on become independent. Likely she pays no food or rent, more money to save. However, if they are abusive... even just passive aggressively attacking her and she has a safe place to go (your house) then she should do that.
Here are some things to put into place:
Get her SS card, original (not the decorative cert. from the hospital) birth certificate and her passport if she has one. Keep that in her possession or even at your home to keep it safe. Get a copy of her last set of taxes (two years is best) or find out who did them so she can access them.
If she has a car, get the title in her name before she moves out. She will have to take over insurance payments but that way it is hers. Make sure she has a savings account in her name only. Change all passwords and make sure you have a copy somewhere safe in case you need to access things for her.
If she thinks moving is the only option, begin to box up non daily items that she wants to keep. (scrap books, diploma, books etc) that she does not want to loose and move them slowly to your home for storage. It is easier to decide what she can loose/leave behind before things become desperate.
Start saving money.
She can do a change of address on line or that the post office. It will be important to reroute her mail as soon as possible. If her parents pay her health insurance she will need to figure out how to pay for that, get a job or apply to the discounted State run, depending on her state. The easiest thing to do it to contact the local social services agency and talk to them. They can help with a food card, resources, medical and other help. They can sometimes offer rent or utility assistance even if she lives with your family. Gather a list of her medical doctors and dentist. Churches and some other non profits also offer help to people in need. Make sure her phone and computer are hers and in her name.
Things she will take over
Car insurance, Health Insurance, Dental and Eye insurance, taxes, car payment, phone bill. Have her start to work on a budget to see if what she can afford and what she can cut. Perhaps her parents will agree to pay insurance or other bills if she shows that she is working or going to school.
I hope some of this helps.

Castaway AU - Coming Later This Winter!
Hey friends! If you’ve been following me for a while you probably know/have heard that I’m working on another big fic to rival Mr. Loverman (which you can find here on ao3 if you haven’t read it yet, it’s 20 chapters and ~103K completed). And as a special treat for all of you who follow me on here, I wanted to share a sneak peek of what’s to come! I’m super excited about this one guys, I have a beta reader and everything (she’s the best, an absolute gem)!!
But first, I need to tell you what it’s about. Izuku is a famous photographer/social media celebrity, just returned home from yet another trip abroad. He decides to take his sailboat out for a trip to get some final photos and top off his portfolio for the month, but he ends up falling asleep on his boat. What happens when he wakes up on the shore of a secluded island with a strange man shaking him awake?
(Please forgive me, I haven’t touched up the summary just yet.)
Anyways, if you’re interested in reading a sneak peek of the first chapter, please click the ‘read more’ option below!
June 30, 06:48am
It’s hard not to feel some sort of rush, being awake this early.
Izuku has always been a morning person, and even more so in the summertime, when the sun wakes with him. Like today! The sun is up just moments after he is, peeking out from the shroud of ocean it hid behind. Izuku is home today, his second night home after his latest trip (he’d gone to Norway, and of course taken photos of everything). He recovered from his jet lag – yesterday he slept in until nine in the morning and was disgusted with himself – and has his swim trunks and an unbuttoned Hawaiian tee on before the sun can even cast a glare on his floor.
He lives in Horiuchi, a small town with a beautiful beach. His apartment is small – mostly because he spends so little time in his actual apartment that it’s more of a postcard address than anything. It has a single bedroom, a kitchen with a dining table crammed in its center, and a living space about big enough for Izuku’s couch and a wall-mounted television. And even then, Izuku often ends up vaulting the couch to get through.
But the balcony is beautiful, outstretching over his view of Morito Coast. The apartment isn’t as costly as some of the others with worse views, probably in part because this isn’t a vacation town but also because nobody wants to live in the shoebox Izuku lives in. Before him, there hadn’t been an inhabitant in the apartment in well over six months, and they gave Izuku a pretty hefty discount on the place even though Izuku said he’d take it full price.
Izuku throws back the curtains to his balcony door (after vaulting his couch), allows the sunlight to wash over the ground. He opens the balcony door wide, the fresh sea air pouring into his apartment, the cool wash of the last remnants of summer night coming through. It almost makes him shiver, and it does push his rowdy curls into even more awkward angles than before, but he opens his arms anyway to the fresh air.
He pulls his phone from his pocket and snaps a picture, as he always does on mornings he’s home. Though he isn’t around much in the summer, the photos of the sun rising over Morito Coast always seem to be more popular than the rest, and Izuku supposes he will never truly know why. He does suspect, though, that it’s because the view is just so perfect.
He nearly forgets to eat breakfast before he starts his live stream, seats himself out on the balcony in his little lawn chair and enjoys the wash of the summer sun slowly creeping up his bare legs. “Good morning!” he calls to the phone, waves to the camera as he’s joined by tens of thousands of people to watch his live stream. He constantly has to remind himself that not all of his fans are located in Japan – because if they were, he’d be more than surprised at how many people jump on at seven in the morning to watch him stream just talking through his day plans.
“Today I’ll be going off Morito Coast on my sailboat!” he announces brightly. He’s had this on the calendar since he was back in Norway. His sailboat is nothing special, barely large enough for three people comfortably, but he hasn’t had a chance to sail since he left almost three weeks ago and he’s anxious to get back out on the water. A few comments roll in telling him he should try surfing one of these days; he laughs it off and takes a note in the back of his brain to call Ochaco next week and have her teach him the basics.
It’s a normal stream, for the most part. Comments roll through, Izuku answers questions that reappear when he can and apologizes for the missed questions when he can’t. It’s shorter than most, and perhaps that is the most out-of-the-ordinary part of it, but otherwise it isn’t anything noteworthy.
So, then, how does it become his last?
08:16am
The sun is hot, now. On the brink of July is when summer becomes sweltering, enough even that it almost deters Izuku away from the heat. Truthfully, it’s why he went up to Norway – it’s much more temperate up there, less direct sunlight to try and inflict Izuku with skin cancer. He lathers up the sunscreen, though, and heads down to the beach – perhaps a ten-minute walk – in his flip flops, his Hawaiian shirt (now buttoned, but only twice), and his dark green swim trunks.
A few of the locals are already on the beach, and they wave to Izuku, shout good-mornings and ask how he’s doing out of courtesy. Izuku recognizes Ivanka, a retired Russian woman who lives in the next apartment building over. Her Japanese is stilted, but she likes Izuku because Izuku knows Russian. (And English, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, and a touch of French.) He recognizes the twin girls from downstairs, Kamiko and Hana, putting together a sandcastle with their mother, Rin, off to the side reading a book. Izuku’s sailboat is further down the beach, closer to the jagged rocks protruding from the water, roped there tightly to keep it from straying too far. Still, he has to yank it to shore by the rope, an activity that might have been impossible when he was scrawnier, but now barely makes him break a sweat.
The boat’s name is S.S. All Might, a silly name perhaps, but Izuku doesn’t care. He’s named after Izuku’s favorite comic book character from when he was a child, a man he always looked up to because he saved everyone with a smile. And though comic book heroes don’t exist, Izuku has vowed to make a hero of himself as best he can in this modern age, by making people smile with his goofy tourist-y photos and livestreams and videos. And though he probably should be past the comic book stage of his life by now, he keeps All Might’s spirit buried in his heart, and All Might’s vintage comic book collection buried in his closet.
He unties the anchoring rope and pushes off from the rocks. It takes a little bit to get past the waves trying to push Izuku back to shore, but they aren’t too rowdy yet today, and for that he’s thankful. Out on the water there’s a decent breeze, and it brings with it a spray of seawater that tames the bubbling heat on Izuku’s skin. As he catches a drift his boat takes off, out to sea, while he pulls the sail taut the best way he knows.
Though it probably isn’t the safest place for his cell phone, Izuku pulls it out of his swimsuit trunk pocket and captures a photo of the sun’s steady ascent past the water. There is a full separation now of the sun and the water, but it still refracts brightly on the water below, makes for a stunning stock image that will likely be the source of Izuku’s rent money this month. Perhaps next month, too. He doesn’t too much care about that, though; he flips the camera to selfie mode and holds it up, peace-signing with the sail in the corner and the sun behind him. His skin looks much tanner than he is in this angle, and his freckled shoulders are hidden underneath his Hawaiian shirt, but he plans to post it anyway – when he’s back somewhere with a cell tower, that is.
Izuku has sailed the space past Morito Coast many times. It isn’t a huge expanse of water, but it’s enough to feel like an adventure. It’s not too vast that Izuku gets lost, but vast enough that he can if he tries. But today, the wind carries him further, and he lets it. He lets it because he has a cooler secured to the floor, complete with four bottles of water and a few sandwiches in case he decides to stay out on the water longer than he’s expecting. And there’s more sunscreen, a portable charger for his phone, a change of clothes being kept dry below deck. What could another mile past his normal stopping point do?
The sunlight can only be kept at bay for so long by the spray of seawater, and Izuku is beginning to feel the heat going to his head. The sun is higher in the sky now, and Izuku can tell without even checking his phone that it’s nearing noon, with the sun beating directly onto him, thrumming like a drum. He can feel every pulse of his heart. His first three water bottles are gone and he’s nursing his fourth. Still, he smiles lazily. This is where he’s meant to be – underneath the sun. He sits on the deck of his sailboat and pulls his phone from his swim trunks again, snaps a few photos of himself with the sun hot overhead. His freckles are well-visible, and his Hawaiian shirt has been tossed aside in the heat, so his shoulders and chest (also dotted with freckles) are visible. He stretches out on the deck and holds the phone above, snapping a picture of himself lying on the sailboat deck. His abs look more defined than ever, considering the sunlight above is casting rather harsh shadows from this angle.
He knows he shouldn’t. He knows he shouldn’t, and he will kick himself every day for doing it, but he closes his eyes, lets the warm summer sun be his blanket as he takes a cat nap on the deck. He’s even so bold as to dip one of his legs off the edge of the boat and into the water, like kicking his foot out from underneath a blanket in the summer when it gets too hot. And he sleeps, he sleeps through the sunlight drawing behind a cloud, and reappearing only to be drawn away again, by angry gray storm clouds that he hadn’t expected today. But when has he ever been one to check the weather?

These Bricks and Beams
Steggy Week 2k19, day 5 Prompt: Domestic Bliss
Summary: On the house hunt. Frustratingly.
AO3 link here.
Peggy has a plan. She does for most things, after all, and buying her first house as a newlywed is no exception. She and Steve have stayed in the familiar flat they love several months past its being strictly comfortable. It’s always been a small place, and it was already becoming cramped with two of them living there. Steve’s clothes hang in the front closet because the bedroom wardrobe is too small for them to share, and now they’re stepping around wedding gifts when they just want to make some toast in the morning.
So one Monday Peggy puts the plan into motion, calling up a Realtor and requesting that they be shown some scaled up residential properties on the market. She and Steve have agreed on their basic qualifications for size, location, price range, and amenities, and Hank Farmer (Number 1 seller three years running! - according to whom, she wonders) gives her every indication that he’ll be able to find some good options for them to see by next week.
Farmer is just as toothily smiling in person as he sounds over the phone. She and Steve exchange a look, but he does come highly recommended (Steve had actually called the local Realtors Bureau, and apparently it is they who keep statistics on who has sold the most in the area) so they push onward, schooling their faces into welcoming blankness.
They see four properties on the first day, flats larger than their current one but with prices that push at the upper boundary of their budget and perhaps even overflow. Steve widens his eyes and shakes his head behind Hank's back when he tells them how much the third floor walkup costs, and she isn't entirely certain the serum will protect her husband from giving himself a stroke at the thought of writing the monthly rent check.
Hank shows them some houses at their next outing, which do have the advantage of price and space, although she'll have a slightly longer commute.
"These units are just sprouting up like weeds," Hank enthuses as they walk through their third such identical house. "Got plenty of young couples set up in ones just like this, and they love them! All the latest: garage for the tinkering gentleman, fresh new linoleum and appliances for the missus." No matter how many times they've mentioned that Steve plans to stay home, Hank refuses to actually absorb the information, handling his discomfort over the arrangement by ignoring it completely and carrying on as if they haven't said anything at all.
His information is accurate, at least. "I think the first kitchen is a bit bigger, and the fourth had lovely exposure if you'd actually like to start that garden, but they all seem in order and they tick the boxes that we'd discussed," Peggy says on the way home.
Steve makes a little sound of acknowledgement, although it's so absent that it almost sounds like one of his sleeping noises. He doesn't speak for a while, and when he says, "I'm not sure that I could see us in any of them. Maybe we should keep looking," he sounds oddly tentative.
She looks over at him in the dim light. She doesn’t know what the purpose would be exactly, but she loves her husband and he has good judgment in his own way. "Certainly we can," she agrees readily.
A month later she is regretting her easy acquiescence. They have gone out with Hank Farmer twice more and seen a dozen other options in the growing suburban communities surrounding the city, and Steve has nodded through each tour, shaken Hank's hand politely, and on the way home said that he couldn't picture them in any of them. Finally Hank told them that perhaps they needed a break to recalculate what they were looking for, and even he looked exhausted, his smile just about ready to melt off his face.
Peggy tells herself that it's fine. She has a backup plan, too, and each morning she and Steve sit in their kitchen which seems increasingly tiny and circle likely listings in the paper. Once a week, they go see them in person. The novelty of shopping for such a major purchase, of getting to see inside all different homes, has long worn off for Peggy. On the way up each front walk, she thrusts her purse over her shoulder with a grimness once reserved for warfare.
And yet Steve continues to reject each house with equally flimsy logic each time: the front door of this one opened right into the kitchen, their current furniture wouldn't coordinate well with the wallpaper in that one. Once or twice, Peggy wonders dully whether he is tormenting her on purpose for some reason, but of course that’s not his nature and, anyway, he is too open for such deception. His face would show any such ridiculous thing in an instant.
Finally one Saturday morning he brings the newspaper over and starts to open it to the classified section and she snaps.
"I don't expect to find anything promising in there," she tells him tartly, buttering her toast so violently she wonders if the bread will be entirely crumbs before she is done. "We've likely seen all that's on offer at least once before, and if we haven't, you'll no doubt discount any new options with ever more minor explanations. Tell me, is there a particular reason that we haven't seen a single property where you can apparently imagine us living?"
"I know," he says, his voice softly miserable. He folds the paper and sets it on the table with that care that she admires and loves so much. She softens a bit despite herself.
"Can you at least try to explain it to me?" she asks, but he shakes his head.
"I can't even explain it to myself. All those places we've seen, they look fine. They all look nearly the same, as a matter of fact - I’m sure I'm just torturing you, making you go tour each one when if you've seen one you've seen them all. But I don't know, Peg. They just don't feel like our house." He steps away from her, sliding his hands into his pockets. "I'm going to take a walk, okay?"
He is gone for so long that she is called into the office before seeing him again. She's distracted all day, her thoughts returning to him at each open moment, always an undercurrent of wondering and worrying even as she takes care of the problems that she can.
He's made shepherd's pie, she realizes as she returns home that evening, and she softens toward him even more. She'd only mentioned once that she used to beg her mother for it at every occasion and she still considers it such a comforting dish.
He kisses her gently as she comes into the kitchen and dishes her out a portion. She starts in on it immediately - apparently worrying over one's husband builds an appetite - and it is a minute before she realizes that his still remains untouched.
Swallowing, she asks, "Did your walk help?"
"It did." He looks down at the table and then back up at her again. "I hate all the places that we've seen. They're just copies of each other, and more than that, we don’t know whether they’ll last."
"They've all been inspected," Peggy feels obligated to point out, poking a fork tine through a single pea rolling on the edge of her plate.
"I don't mean that they're going to fall to pieces tomorrow. But they haven’t been tested at all. In twenty years, in fifty, are they going to just be identical pasteboard wrecks? The place we buy is going to be where we live our lives. We're going to bring kids there, and maybe grandkids." He presses his hands together. "I want our home to be something more, Peg."
She doesn't entirely understand - all of the houses had looked fine to her, decently built if modern, not exactly what she was accustomed to from England, and an older house certainly had its own likelihood of falling to pieces or becoming a nuisance to keep patched together - but she touches his hand, closing her fingers around his and squeezing.
"We can keep looking," she says, and she finds in his smile the strength she needs to make it true.
It's not a newspaper advertisement that finally leads them to the place, but Rita Langforth from down the street who mentions that her great-uncle and -aunt are selling their house to move where it's warmer. Peggy and Steve go to look the next afternoon.
"It’s a bit small, but we never really considered leaving. We moved in here the day after we were married, all the way back in ‘06," Anna Moss tells them as she takes them through each room, a fond sadness on her face as she looks about at everything. "Joe carried me over that threshold, and carried each of our babies out for baptism after they were born upstairs."
"She weighed about the same as the babies, though she was about a thousand times prettier," Joe Moss jokes in his craggy tenor and Anna blushes and says, "Don't lie to the children, Joey."
"Are you truly certain you can part with a place like this, with so many memories?" Peggy asks gently. Anna keeps touching the solid wood doorframes, and Joe has pointed out a half dozen spots with particular imperfections or stories in a way that Peggy understands to mean that he has several hundred more to share.
"Oh, it's getting to be a little too much for us," Joe says with peaceful regret.
"We'd like to pass it on to someone who will love it as much as we have," Anna adds earnestly. She peers at Peggy through her small eyeglasses. "I would be happy to give it to the two of you."
"Steve?" Peggy looks over to where he is standing in a shaft of sunlight, taking in the place with a slightly distant look in his eyes. Until he looks at her, and he focuses, and smiles.
"I can picture us here," he says. “Can’t you?”
And although she'll never admit it, she's happy he made them keep looking, because she can picture them here in a way she couldn't entirely in the other places they had seen. There it had been the vague shadow of a Steve chopping vegetables at the counter, or a version of herself taking advantage of the fireplace: images which were almost functional, as if she were posing paper dolls or extending a measuring tape to make sure that the two of them were the right size for the interior. But here it is a whole life she can see, a vivid array of board games and reading together in this parlor, a Christmas tree which will stand in that corner, of dancing in full view of the windows for no reason at all, waving to neighbors from the front porch, of children who will bicker over who has the bedroom with the window seat and challenge each other to climb the shade tree in the front yard.
Peggy turns to the Mosses and asks, "Where can we sign?"
Three weeks later they stand in the middle of their new front hallway. Their old loveseat is already in place, as are the kitchen table and chairs, and the new bed they bought. Otherwise they are accompanied only by three suitcases and five boxes. Neither of them has been particularly accustomed to permanency or the acquisition that comes with it.
“How in the world are we to fill this place?” Peggy asks, turning this way and that with hands on her hips.
Steve rests his hands on top of hers. He kisses her until she twines her fingers with his, then pulls back and looks at her so he can say, “We already have.”

What's the Variation In Between Vendor as well as Supplier?
Perform you recognize what's the variation in between provider as well as provider? Perform you understand which one you like? If you don't, this short article is for you.
Vendor suggests an individual that is actually hired to supply services and products for a company. A provider offers his/her service or product straight to the consumer.
Vendor suggests someone that is employed to give services and products for an organisation. A vendor markets his/her product or services to the client. A provider possesses no relationship with the company, it offers.
The relationship between provider and also distributor is actually different. Provider doesn't own the products and services it markets. As well as a provider does not have the items it provides. Both have a contract that lets them offer the product and services.
Is it accurate that the supplier is even more pricey than a supplier? Yes, this is the truth. Most of the times the price of a supplier is actually higher than the price of a supplier. A provider delivers a specific cost for a particular quantity of a product to ensure if you purchase in lots you may acquire even more for your amount of money.
On the contrary, if you need to obtain item in sizable quantities at that point you ought to purchase from a merchant. The volume of product that a merchant sells might not be enough for you to pay for each device. So the vendor pays the supplier to acquire his or her product to you.
Performs it make sense to choose an equipment distributor instead of a merchant? Well, this depends upon what you need. If you require a bunch of tools for your service after that you will have a tough time finding a vendor.
Along with a provider you can possess a specific budget and also get that certain equipment in huge quantities. A merchant has to make sure not to spend beyond your means therefore he will definitely often work out a discount plan with the supplier so you do not overpay.
Having said that, as discussed earlier, there are some companies that perform certainly not demand that much of equipment as well as the fastest as well as very most efficient way to accomplish company is to work with a vendor. This is actually excellent for much smaller businesses due to the fact that it decreases the variety of hrs that you spend working to carry out all the different activities that you need to accomplish so as to run your business.
Perform you still would like to construct a significant warehouse to house all your company items? If this is the case then you are going to need to have to find a vendor. Often there is a large area to rent out for rental fee.
It is actually a great idea to tap the services of a specialist product installer to put all the items in the appropriate area. This belongs of the hiring method.
Do you recognize the variation between seller as well as supplier? At that point below is actually a bonus inquiry for you:

And the followup post, here.
Okay folks, this is one I’ve resisted posting about for a while, but enough people have sent it to me (including a link from WADTT from a group where the author goes further into detail on this subject, thank you darling <3 ) that I guess it’s time.
I’m going to start with- this is why I don’t like it when people who are not involved in something decide they want to judge something they don’t know anything about. I’m, of course, not saying this woman doesn’t know anything about dog training- her credentials are enough to say otherwise. But the phrasing of both of these articles indicate that she has never taken her dogs through a CGC before and, indeed, has never done any sort of AKC event before. In fact, one of her main problems with it (and one of her source’s main problems with it, but I’ll go into that later) is that the AKC is an organization that makes money because people do stuff with their dogs with said organization. Her source is more talking about puppy mills- in which it exaggerates a bit and implies that the money the AKC makes yearly is mostly coming from litter entries (ignoring the large sums coming from show entries, titles, etc) while her post implies that they’re getting quite a hefty sum from CGC entries (ignoring... all the other stuff the AKC does). Another reasons she gives for not liking the CGC is that the rulebook states that they don’t care what method you use to teach the items- something true of all AKC titles- as long as your dog is in the approved back-clipping non-restrictive harness, flat collar, martengale collar, or slip collar come testing day. She even does not like that the CGC allows the slip collar to be used during the test, despite the fact that- like all AKC titles- it’s not meant to be used during the test, as correcting your dog even verbally will fail you.
Far be it from me to claim the CGC is the end-all of dog behavior. We have had dogs right here on dogblr that decidedly were not the epitome of good temperament pass CGC and even CGCA. I’ve passed a dog that I know is dog aggressive, but he was not during testing time or class, so I also could not fail him. I just had an argument with a high profile dobe breeder about why the CGC program is not an ideal standard for service dogs. I have my own problems with the program, and my own problems with the AKC, and I can’t really say either is perfect.
I’ve taken close to 50 dogs through the CGC in 2018 and the first couple days of 2019 alone at this point. As most of you are aware, I am not a +R trainer by the strictest sense of the term. As most of you are also aware, I am required to be so while at my job. That means the vast majority of my students must adhere strictly to force-free methodology, and exceptions may only be made when there is a serious safety concern regarding strength of dog vs strength of human. This also means that the majority of my CGC students have run through the CGC without ever feeling any sort of pressure or compulsion. While, yes, the rulebook does state that whatever methods you want can be used for teaching the items, my job states that I am much more limited. Besides that, I’m pretty pro-don’t-punish-your-dog-for-not-reading-your-mind and anti-use-corrective-collars-to-fix-your-shitty-foundation, so there’s that too, even with my personal dogs aka dogs I’m allowed to actually do whatever I want with. Just as an aside, but I took CGC classes at Petco as well when I ran through the program with Creed because I can and they’re free for me, so I also was not allowed to have him on anything more corrective than a martengale during class or test. This means no slip collar either- something allowed by AKC rules but not by the testing facility. Clearly the CGC can be passed while sticking firmly to a +R ideology.
But that’s not enough- in the group where she discussed her reasonings for this, the mere fact that the CGC rulebook states that it allows slip collars, that you can do whatever you want in training, and that the AKC refuses to totally ban metal aversives is bad enough to never want to take a CGC. Simply funding the organization with your $10 is bad enough to not want to do it. That, to me, is more than a little ridiculous.
Onto the next point- the fear that more people beginning to require a CGC to insure or rent to dog owners would split up dogs and humans- specifically fearful or aggressive dogs, and low income families. This is a tricky one to navigate, and one that I’m very much wishing she hadn’t thrown human social talking points into (misogyny, violence against women, income status, etc). First of all- there is no current punishment for failing your CGC besides a little bit of embarrassment or frustration if you thought your dog was ready, so the whole “scarlet letter of bad citizen” is exaggerated hyperbole at best. Second of all, no insurance company to date has required a CGC that I am aware of, but has given discounts for one being present. Third, HOAs and landlords have actually changed from disallowing pets completely to saying that they will allow a pet if it’s trained to a visible standard- this is a good thing. This is not “landlords and HOAs used to allow dogs all the time but now they require your dog pass a test”, it’s “landlords and HOAs used to not allow any dogs or only allow dogs smaller than 25lbs or have breed bans and now instead of that they just want to make sure your dog is somewhat trained”. Forward progress. Creed failed his CGC at 13 months. He passed it at 22 months. Failing it the first time had literally zero effect on his ability to pass it the second time, except that I knew what things he still needed practice with before our second go around.
If your dog is too fearful or too aggressive to pass a CGC test with dedicated training, you probably shouldn’t be renting with it. These are easy things to pass and things your dog will have to navigate at some point in its life. Your dog is going to need to be touched by strangers at the vet or groomer. Basic obedience- positions, recall, stay, those are things that literally save lives in emergency situations. Your dog is going to need to be able to peacefully coexist with other dogs when going outside to pee, on a walk, at the vet, at the groomer. With the increasing number of vets that take the dog into the back, away from its owner, for simple procedures like shots and blood draws, your dog is going to need to be okay not being next to you for a whole 3 minutes. Not everyone likes dogs, so it’s imperative that your dog can walk by strangers without bothering them, especially if you have neighbors in the same building. While loose leash walking and distractions are perhaps the most easily discarded of all of these items, the #1 complaint I receive as a dog trainer from new clients is that their dog pulls on leash. The #2 complaint is that the dog is easily distracted by everything and thus “doesn’t listen”. That’s your 10 items on the CGC. If your dog cannot do those things with a combination of training and management techniques, then, yeah, your dog probably shouldn’t be in a rental and you should look into additional training. Additionally- dogs that bark constantly, especially at movement/sound from neighbors or due to seperation anxiety, get their owners evicted. That’s the hard truth. Dogs that are not properly housebroken get their owners evicted, or at the very least get their owners charged thousands of dollars for repairs when an angry landlord has to replace flooring or carpet or furniture. That’s why the dog owner pledge exists.
HOAs are much the same- barking dogs get neighbor complaints which then get you evicted or fined. Leaving a dog outside to bark in the yard is one of the biggest reasons animal control gets called on dog owners. A pesky neighborhood gardener has the right to work in peace- if your dog won’t stop barking, nothing is stopping you from bringing it inside or moving it away from the windows. I don’t know why we suddenly jump to taping the mouth shut or surgical debarking- unless the dog cannot be calmed once it starts, in which case a visit to the vet and a behaviorist (or trainer otherwise skilled in BAT) is in order to determine what combination of management techniques and medication is required for the dog to have its extreme anxiety or aggression calmed to a more reasonable point where it stops being unfair to the dog to exist in such a stressful mindset. The pledge does not say you can’t do that- and anyone working with a trainer to pass the CGC should be provided that option should they request it.
People don’t like it when dog owners let their dogs poop in their yards. Even if you clean it up, there’s still residue. It’s also pretty terrible for the environment to not pick it up in your own yard, as well as a public health and safety hazard if allowed to collect over a long amount of time or if there are multiple dogs. E.coli, salmonella, coccidia, giardia, and various parasites such as roundworm and tapeworm can and do spread to humans if on contaminated ground- a worry for children who may not know better than to put their hands in grass a dog has recently pooped on and, since there’s no visible trace of poop anymore, then puts their hands in their mouths. Distemper, parvo, and lepto spreads to dogs with weak immune systems that cannot be vaccinated, or puppies who have not completed their vaccinations yet. Rain water pushes these diseases out of a dog owner’s yard and into other ground as well as into rivers and other sources of drinking water. Making sure that your dog only uses certain areas to go to the bathroom, and then immediately doing your best to pick up after your dog is the only acceptable compromise. And people are very bad at even doing that- outside of my store, where there is a poop bag station every couple of feet, we still completely fill a trash bag full of poop weekly because people will not pick up after their dogs. That’s why the dog owner pledge exists. At least daily inside of my store, we discover a trail of feces and urine down an aisle from a dog owner that either wasn’t paying enough attention to their dog to see that it was doing that, or that didn’t care enough to clean it up, even with several easily accessible clean-up stations within the store. Sometimes it’s right at the clean-up station.
That’s why its phrased the way it is. Good citizen- or in Canada, good neighbor. It’s an attempt to curb bad human behaviors while also teaching dogs a very simple, easy-to-pass test. If the CGC or CGN isn’t your cuppa, there’s also others such as CLASS and SPOT and even various things from DMWYD. But all of them are similar in that they attempt to solve this problem as more people with more dogs becomes more widespread.
As for the rest- dogs that growl get dismissed from the test. This does not mean dogs-that-growl-ever. This means, dogs that growl during the test. It’s included because the AKC got tired of evaluators and judges and other dogs being attacked by dogs. Any aggressive behavior whatsoever displayed during the test is grounds for automatic dismissal in the vast majority of AKC events. This prevents the owner from attempting to “work through it” and invariably flooding the dog and getting someone bit. Instead, the dog is dismissed, and the owner is forwarded to someone who can find out why the dog is growling and how to make the dog more comfortable with whatever the problem was. Dogs that cannot hold their urine for the 30 minutes max each test takes, yes, get dismissed, because nobody likes a dog that pees all over everything. This includes dogs that submissive or excited pee, because the owner should be working with a vet and behaviorist on proper management solutions. Dogs are allowed to startle during distractions, as long as they do not attempt to flee, run, or bark. It even says the dog may look at the distraction with (mild) interest, as long as it is neither pulling towards the distraction nor running away from the distraction.
Once again, far be it from me to be the white knight of the CGC or even of the AKC, but this article is, frankly, mostly the same type of nonsense I always hate seeing from people who wish to make talking points about things they’ve never experienced and thus don’t have any idea what they’re talking about. Again, I am not saying this woman doesn’t know what dog training entails. Her credentials alone say otherwise. But I am saying that it’s very clear she’s never even attempted the CGC, nor attended a class of people attending the CGC. Again, in the FB group where she discusses her reasoning, she even says that while she understands people do go through the CGC with all forcefree training, her problem is that it allows people to not do that, and so it’s still unacceptable. So all training is required to be forcefree, written in the rules, or else there’s the potential that someone somewhere might do something to their dogs that she doesn’t like, and so it’s bad. That’s... ridiculous.
There’s also some things at the end about wanting legislature to require forcefree only training, about wanting all dog trainers to pass a certification that requires people to only use forcefree training, and some bits about people like me who occasionally use tools not allowed by +R methodology in certain circumstances being inhumane and unethical, but I won’t go into those more than my warning that I always have for things like this.
Always be careful about strong opinions formed by people who have never done or experienced or worked with the thing they have strong opinions about. Especially so when they are strong opinions that may become enforced by law. At that point, everyone loses.

Brazil - Just let go and enjoy
Brazil - Rio de Janeiro & Ilha Grande
So Brazil is my country of origin. So I ended up spending quite a bit of time here. I will then give you a few tips on a few things and a few cities so its not an overload. I am also yet to explore its grandeur in full. São Paulo, I will save you for later my dear one.
RIO DE JANEIRO
I spent approximately a week in Rio, not followed by collectively so I will write below a quick guide.
Day 1 - if you are arriving by plane I advise you try and get into Santos Dumont which is super close to the city centre. From there you can get the VLT which is just outside the airport to Cinelandia and at Cinelandia you can cross the tracks and get into the underground so you can head southbound to Ipanema. Make sure when you buy the ticket (which will be a card) of the VLT you put enough cash for that day (around R$20 should do). If you arrive early and are staying in Ipanema or Copacabana (which I highly recommend as these are safer areas), go for a walk on the beach.
Botanical Gardens
Day 2 - When I arrived I headed straight to the Parque Lage and Botanical Park by Uber (they also have an app called Rio cabs which also works well and its like an Uber). But that depends when you arrive in the city. This trip could take you half a day or a full day depending how easy you want to take it. The Parque Lage and the Botanical Park are beautiful and you can have a coffee and picnic over there. On your way back you can also go for a wonder around the Lagoa (Portuguese for the Lake). I took the bus back but equally you can get an Uber back. Again make sure you miss the rush hour. As for food I recommend this adorable vegetarian / vegan place near the Botanical Gardens called Prana.
Mureta da Urca
Day 3 - Wake up early and head to Pao de Acucar. It’s a bit difficult to get there by public transport as you will need to get the tube and the bus so perhaps look into getting a cab there. You can also chose to trek up Pao de Acucar. You can either book with a guide all of it or you can do half by yourself. Equally you can just get the cable car (at R$100 for an adult (you have discounts for students)) all the way up. Enjoy the view and then go for a wonder around Urca, or better yet hand around until sunset to enjoy it at the wall (which they call “mureta”). There is only one bar around there and I advise you buy a few large beers (at R$10 if I recall right) and keep the tickets to reclaim later so you don’t have to queue again. I also recommend you order a portion of pasteis (cheese and shrimp are my favourite although meat is good too).
City Centre
Day 4 - Head out early to Cinelandia and check out the library, the royal gabinet and walk around this city centre. There also should be some walking tours leaving from the square in front of the National Library around 9:30am/10am. You can either walk towards the Tomorrow Museum or you can leave this to another day. Whenever you decide to go to the Tomorrow Museum (in Portuguese: Museo do Amanha), make sure you either buy the tickets for the Museum before or you arrive around opening time (10am) so you are not stuck in the queue for too long. This museum is definitely work it and at R$20 per adult its super doable. Then go and wonder around the market to the left of the museum (in fact between the tomorrow museum and the art museum which are on the same square area) and enjoy the view of that huge wall with these worldly colourful faces. If you have time you can also head to Santa Teresa that same day and do the Ruins Park and the colourful steps (Escadaria Selaron).
Escadaria Selaron
Day 5 - Escadaria Salaron (Escadaria meaning staircase and Salaron the name of the guy who made it) is the various steps up near Lapa made of mosaic. You have a lot of people there but if you head up to a park called Santa Teresa first you have a nice view of the city and then work your way down. Take your time and enjoy the views. Also be careful as the Lapa neighbourhood near the staircase isn’t super safe. You can then go for lunch at one of the many bars in the Lapa (look up places on Avenida Mem de Sa).
A Day at the Beach
Day 6 - You can look to do go and just chill at Barra da Tijuca beach or Ipanema or Copacabana. If you chose a weekend to go and chill at the beach you will see what Rio is truly like. Make sure you buy some mate (which is a typical Rio drink, sold anywhere really but the best one is at the beach from these guys with these metal like tanks). Make sure you also buy the ‘Globo’ snacks they carry around. Only then you can truly experience the Rio spirit. Also make sure you watch the sunset at one of these beaches as its stunning. Equally head down the Ipanema beach to the Pedra do Arpoador (the Arpoador Rock) to watch the sunset.
Cristo / Christ Redeemer
Day 7 - If the weather is good I would highly recommend waking up early and heading out to the Cristo. I got an a taxi with 99 but you could also plan to get an Uber. I would recommend booking a taxi back. Perhaps speak to the driver or pre-book the Uber as its quite busy and there are less taxis on the way back.
Saturday Markets
Day 8 - If one of your days in Rio is the first Saturday of the month you can head to the Lavradio Street Market. It is a vintage market in the Lapa neighbourhood. There is also the Rio cathedral next door that is a very interesting architecture (built in a triangular manner).
SAFETY / TIPS
In terms of safely I would say you stay in Copacabana or Ipanema. The Lapa neighbourhood is dangerous although a fun night out. But know that I only went out there with locals I trusted. Rio is beautiful but please be careful because it’s not the safest place so be careful and don’t stray too far from the safe areas (Leblon, Ipanema and Copacabana) unaccompanied by locals you trust.
Other things to do:
Climb Sugar Loaf
Barra beach
Tijuca Park
Pedro da Gavea climb
ILHA GRANDE
You can take another 3-4 days or even more to head to Ilha Grande which is super close to Rio and super worth the visit.
Day 1 - All you need to do is get the 5am bus to Mangaratiba from the Rio bus station. You can buy the ticket online and get it on the day. I would recommend you arrive at the station around 4am. Once you get to Mangaratiba (a 1.5 hr drive from Rio getting you there around 6:30/7am), head to the port which is about 100m on the same side of the road that the bus will drop you off. There might already be a queue so just join. The boat costs R$17 one way. When you get to Ilha Grande you can buy the return on the day or do what we did which was to get a transfer back that included the boat and the bus back to Rio. The boat to Ilha Grande took around 1hr. When we got there around 9/10am we headed to our camping site. It was called Camping do Bicao. You can chose more expensive options but Camping do Bicao was super well equipped. When you booked with them (at R$30 per person per night for the camping space), you can ask to rent anything from the tent (R$120 per night I believe); mattresses (R$60 per night for a double); pillows and bedding (another R$30 per night I believe). They also have hostel rooms but they go quickly. Everything was clean and super well organised.
On the same day we arrived we had all our stuff up and organised by 11am. If you rent the tent they help you do it up and take it down for you so you don’t even need to worry about that. We then headed to the Poço (translated to Well but really just a pool of water) which is to the north of the island (20 minutes from the town). We then treked for an 1 hr to the Feiticeira beach and waterfall. Super worth it and doable with half a day. As we came back into town around 3pm we bought some food (I also advise you buy some food in Rio and take it with you as Ilha Grande options are limited and things are expensive). We also booked a tour for the next day called Meia Volta where you do half of the island (that’s what “meia volta” means). Most agencies do the same spots and cost about the same so just ask around and see which one you prefer.
Meia Volta tour
Day 2 - Meia Volta tour. Enjoy and take some food but the boat should have water. Also take a snorkel if you have one.
Lopes Mendez trek
Day 3 - Make sure you do not miss the trek to Lopes Mendez. Leave early in the morning - say 9/10am. Take at least 1lt of water per person and food. The trek took 2hours but its uphill then downhill. Plus its through the forest so although you don’t usually have the sun on you its pretty humid and super hot. Also make sure you buy your return ticket before you leave (the long boat at 45mins should come to R$15 and the fast boat at 30mins comes to R$25). If someone on the trek tries to sell it for more or doesn’t give you the less expensive options keep walking. Make sure you keep an eye out for anyone selling the tickets and ask how much. We bought our return tickets with a lady at the third to last beach before getting to Lopez Mendez. Normally they keep an eye out and ask people whether they have return tickets. If I were you I would buy the tickets in town for the 5pm slot so you can truly enjoy Lopes Mendez and the other beaches. We arrived at 1pm and realised that 4 hours was not long enough. On our last night we also headed into town to enjoy some music. Be warned that booze is expensive although we managed to find a tiny spot one street away from the Main Street selling stuff fairly cheap.
Day 4 - On this day we headed back to Rio early. We got the transfer (at R$110) including ferry and bus to Rio at 10am. If you decide to stay longer there are other beaches you can explore.
CRIBSHEET
In Rio Stay either in Ipanema or Copacabana. I rented an air B&B. There are also hostels in Barra da Tijuana which isn’t bad but a bit away from the city centre.
Places to eat:
- Mate and Globo biscuits at the beach
- Jockey Club by the Botanical Gardens
- Prana (address: R. Lopes Quintas, 37) by the Botanical Gardens
- Ella Pizzaria (address: Rua Pacheco Leao, 102) across from the Botanical Gardens
- Puro Restaurant (address: R. Visc. De Carandai, 43) again across from the Botanical Gardens
- Bar Pavao Azul (address: Rua Hilario de Gouveia, 71) in Copacabana. Amazing little bohemian split with amazing “pasteis” (fried pastries) and good vibes.
- Urca Grill (address: Rua Mal. Cantaría, 10). This place you got to go at the end of the day to watch the sunset sat at the wall - you will see what I mean because it will be hard to find a spot to sit. Get some beers and some “pasteis” and enjoy the view and the vibe.
- Confeitaria Colombo (address: R. Goncalves Dias, 32). This is a century-old cafe with an incredible colonial architecture, amazing traditional snacks, sweets and coffee. It’s in the city centre so perhaps go after a morning stroll / tour / museum visit.
Where to go:
- Christ Redeemer (half day)
- Mureta da Urca & Sugar Loaf (full day)
- City Centre (walking tour) (half day)
- Escadaria Selaron / Santa Teresa (full day)

i can't remember if you've said, but where do you think your characters will settle post-shift? what are their new living spaces going to be like?
sokay i talked about this a bit in an ask from tony but i’ll just refer back to it and expand on my ideas a bit! especially since i have some revamp stuff more fleshed out now
lucille’s gonna be living in victorian london! i think she’ll kinda miss living by the water though so she might get a place by the river or something. and she’s gonna probably start composing music and finally make a career out of that because that’s something she’s always wanted to do, and every now and again maybe i’ll give her a monster encounter or something since. she does have a shitton of monster hunting experience by now,
her place’ll probably incorporate a lot of the style she’s developed living on her own in her beach house, so it’ll be a touch modernized by london’s standards but still very. elegant in aesthetic. and i like your idea about her and maria rooming together so maybe we can do that!
siobhan’s staying in the southwest. in the same damn saloon, in fact. so there’s not much new to describe about hers or the denny guardians’ living situation; though maybe they’ll like... have an expedition to explore some of the newer towns at some point? road trip!
though i also said i wanted her to get the chance to visit the triassic period location with raptor red and that still stands; i think that could lend to some interesting dynamic development
sara is gonna be staying on the waverider and maybe sometimes visiting port royal if that’s where nyssa’s gonna be hanging out. so not much new to say here either, except that her life might be less... exciting than she’s used to. she might be restless for awhile. ‘cause, y’know, no more time travel, no more timeline that needs protecting. the legends’ll be kinda robbed of their purpose so she’ll need to find a new one. she might revert to more traditional vigilanteism in chicago perhaps or just, maybe they’ll tour around trying to get leads on the organization and that can be their new thing, who knows!
the cats don’t really need much of an update...
dolores and alana are both staying in beacon heights so i’ll just group them together! for alana, it’s probably pretty convenient that it’s closer to metropolis, because she’ll be spending a lot of her time there trying to help the mld get a handle on things anyway. dolores is too content in beacon heights to really want to move around, although i do have vague plans for her to get involved with our Future Location. maybe in some campaign for sentient ai there. it actually might be a good place to continue to make use of host printing stuff
and now for my characters who are ACTUALLY moving around more,
sophie’s gonna be in chicago, of course, running her own club/speak-easy, so she’ll probably live somewhere close to there! i envision her like... moving into an apartment building and renting out a big ol’ penthouse and living it up. that might be where she conducts some of her shady business related to the club and keeping it protected from the organization. oh i actually forgot i added a cool hotel location to chicago; she might rent out the penthouse THERE. and then she can interact with some of the guests and stuff too.
camille’s gonna be living in metropolis still, so technically not much is changing there, but... she might not be home all that often. once the revamp hits i’m really envisioning her traveling a lot, actually. because one of the challenges of the revamp is like... figuring out how to establish mass communication (there aren’t cell phone towers or wifi in a lot of these locations, unless someone icly starts an initiative to install them!) and spread news from place to place and keep everyone connected. i thought it would be cool and make sense if that task sorta fell to the daily planet, so, yeah! camille might be all over the place, staying in different hotel rooms or crashing on people’s couches, that kinda thing. it’ll be interesting to see who she meets along the way
sly, as we’ve already discussed a bit, is gonna be in port royal! he’ll be on the mainland some of the time but i’m also considering... bring in his (canonical) pirate ship and just letting him fuckin’ have at it with whatever crew he assembles. while he’s in town, i think he’d be the type to try to keep things safe and vaguely ordered (i know we discussed him and nyssa being kind of, like, thief-vigilantes) and while at sea he might be doing things like rescuing people from pirates and... maybe even discovering the location of the Plot Thing in that area, so that later he can help guide people to it
cordelia is gonna be in st. denis (or technically just outside of it) since that’s where the academy is being moved! it’s... gonna be a bit of a lifestyle change for her and everyone living there because the people of st. denis. aren’t so culturally appreciative of witchcraft as the people in new orleans are. so i’m interested to play with the conflict of her and the coven kinda... clashing with some of the locals, and what kind of plot stuff that might draw to the area. they might ESPECIALLY get off to a bad start because fate and i are planning on implementing venomplot soon after the revamp, so like. whoops if cordelia bonded with the symbiote gets noticed somewhere in town,
susie and villanelle are both gonna live in paris! fuckin’ naturally.
susie... despite the fact that she could live pretty much anywhere if she wanted to, probably would be happy with somewhere pretty modest. she really isn’t used to anything lavish. although one thing i was definitely considering was having her start some kind of dance academy there, so maybe she’ll live there if that becomes a thing?? what’s really nostalgic for her about paris is that it’s... pretty much stuck in the time period she comes from, too, so there’ll be that to grapple with
and villanelle. honestly i have this whole complicated thing in my head for how villanelle operates on denny, the hoops she jumps through to keep herself under the radar. essentially the situation is going to be: she has a pretty standard apartment in metropolis, which is the address her rifter id is registered to, and the place she’d bring anyone who was like, casually visiting her or whatever. that apartment is... she takes care to make it appear lived in, but it’s pretty standard and impersonal.
her flat in paris is not registered under her name, is much harder to track, and far fewer people get to see it, but it is definitely more resembling of a place she’d actually call home. it’s very... her, very similar to the place she has in canon, probably. expensive and stylish and ~trendy~, very much a 25 year old girl’s apartment if you discount the weapons she keeps in the drawers. i still think it’d be funny if fox had to live with her for a bit as a parallel to him taking in her younger self,
i’m not quite sure where laura will end up yet; i’m considering a few options. one is -- i haven’t set the details of this particular location in stone yet, but she might be an interesting candidate to hang out in whatever fantasy world we develop! because technically, she’s more magical than anything else. i’m also vaguely considering london or future world for her (and she should definitely have an encounter with those fucking. zombie people who live outside of st. denis, FEAR) but yeah we’ll see. might depend on who she falls in with.

Dig a Little Deeper 08/14
Ryoko Kasai grins. "There ya are! So. Tell me. What kinda business we doin', this time? An' I want ya ta confirm fer me - did ya get yer goddamn gun, this time?"
Lebeaux Desrosiers entered the office, nodding to the two guards at the door. He was carrying a parcel in his hands. The same ornate sort of box that the sword that had started this entire ‘situation’ came in. He brushed past them without deigning to stop and be searched. He approached the desk and took his time folding too-long legs underneath himself to set the box down. “Here it is. For all the good it has done me.”
"Good! Ain't gonna do ya much good sittin' in that box. Gotta use it, now, don't ya?"
Lebeaux sniffed haughtily, setting the box atop Kasai’s desk without much consideration for what was already there. He lifted the top off and set it aside. “It is a beautiful piece, but it seems a bit more complex than the standard single-shot dueling pistols. I believe a demonstration is in order.” He slid the box towards her.
Ryoko rolls her eyes. It's almost hidden by the shades. "Sure, sure, sure." She reaches into the box, taking the mount out with her right hand, inspecting it. Her left remains near her hip, it seems. "This wasn't all ya wanted ta ask about, is it?"
“No. There were a few other matters. I presumed I could run a few things by you while you demonstrate the finer points of cleaning, loading, firing and dismantling it. I do appreciate that you had the grip inlaid in white pearl. A rather nice touch.” Lebeaux smiled primly. “Two matters. On my last visit Kikai, Bryte and yourself were discussing theories to negate aether and essentially render mages null. Have you made any progress.”
Ryoko looks over the slide, nodding slowly. "Right, right, right." She taps the side of the handgun. "Here's yer first problem. Ta make it this compact, an' make it somethin' people ain't gonna be able ta find as easy, I had ta make some sacrifices in th' design. Put simply, ya ain't gonna be able to reload it fast in th' field. As fer th' mage thing, why ya askin'?"
“So I’ll need to make the shots count, as once they’re out I’m out. Fair enough.” Lebeaux removed his hat and set it down on the desk as well, pale eyes narrowing as he watched every move she made carefully. Committing the process to memory. “I was ambushed by a mage in my own offices. Being a combat medic I was able to defend myself, to an extent, but my décor was not so lucky. I would be interested in applying such theories in case he should make another attempt.”
"Well, I got good news an' bad news, then." Ryoko finishes checking the arm mount. She holds it next to her arm, and makes a very specific flicking motion with her wrist a few times. "That's how ya pull it out. Gotta practice it, it unlatches an' springs forward." She then rifles through her desk for a screwdriver.
“I hope the good far outweighs the bad. Seeing that as of late the medic has been outweighing the combat.” Lebeaux mused, watching as she toyed with the device.
"Well, the good news is, I definitely have a weapon that'll fuck up mages. Or, rather, know how ta get one." Ryoko taps a set of screws. "Unscrew this, here, ta open th' side - then use a real fine, soft brush ta brush out anythin', an' oil it out with a rag. Leave it that way a bit before ya screw it back on. That's how ya clean it proper. 'Course, don't recommend firin' it much. Ain't fer durability or long-term use."
“I’ll need to test it once or twice just to ensure it’s functional as well as gauge just how potent it is. I don’t hope to need it often but I would prefer to have it with me until… matters settle somewhat.” Lebeaux noted as he watched carefully, inspecting each piece as she showed it to him. “What’s the bad news regarding the anti-mage weapon?”
"It's potent." Ryoko stands up, demonstrating a particular stance - gripping at her chest with her right hand, the left holding the gun forward - and leaning her body forward. "Like this. Grippin' th' chest makes sure ya ain't gonna shoot yer own hand off. Leanin' forward, this much recoil needs it - yer usin' yer body weight ta offset it. This thing looks small, but it kicks like a goddamn horse. Smaller gun's always gonna kick hard for its calibre. Less there ta absorb th' recoil. As fer th' bad news, it's gonna cost me a goddamn mint ta make a knife outta it."
Lebeaux settled his hands primly on the desk’s top, lacing gloved fingers together as he watched the demonstration with a small smile of amusement. There was a considerable size and weight difference between himself and the au ra, but he would certainly keep that in mind. “A knife? Truly… that seems rather… well.” He tilted his head thoughtfully. “You have to be quite close to use a knife. It’s an intimate method of dealing with a problem. In the case of mages the threat of intimacy is one of the very first lessons taught."
"I'm gettin' a knife made an' six bullets. Six shots should be more'n enough ta kill anythin' that moves."
Lebeaux clicked his tongue in a quiet tut of distaste. “I suppose, though it’s a rather finite resource. I was hoping for something a bit longer lasting. I shall have to continue researching on my own. The second matter I suspect will be something more familiar to you. The Golden Fox has been lessening its trade in certain substances, particularly Eastern somnus. Do you have contact with reliable suppliers.”
Ryoko grins ear to ear. "Why, it just so happens I am a contact with a reliable supplier. I can get ya what ya need. You wouldn't be th' first person I had on a subscription, even, if that's what yer into."
Lebeaux smiled sweetly, though he wrinkled his nose somewhat at the sudden grin she had grown. “It would depend on the terms for such a service. Your markup margin does tend to be rather high.” He gestured at the box laid out on the desk with a small wave of his hand.
"Why, I give fair services fer fair pay. Ya can't expect me not ta make any profit, now, can ya? I need ta know how much a' what ya want an' how strong ya want it 'fore I can give ya a price."
“I understand the need to turn a profit full well.” At least now Lebeaux did, perhaps he hadn’t grasped the concept so well when the original deal had been struck. The wrinkle along the bridge of his nose smoothed out as he smiled serenely. “As well as the need to ensure you get all that you’ve bargained for. It would be a shame if my edge were to dull a bit due to lack of proper upkeep. Something a touch stronger than the sort previously laid out for Open House nights.”
"Uh huh." Ryoko gives the pistol one more look-over, then carefully packs it back in the box, as if it were some kind of ancient relic. "We talkin' daily use?"
“Depends how the day goes. Considering the turbulence lately, yes. It will likely decrease once the matters are settled.”
"Well, I got an offer fer ya. It's one ya might like. Or one ya might not like. I'll give ya a fifty percent discount off th' price I'd normally give ya - that's practically at cost - fer just one little thing, is all."
Lebeaux quirked a dark brow, smiling serenely all the while. “Oh, quite little I’m sure. I’m listening.”
"All you gotta do is extend our little contract out another day fer every day I keep ya supplied. You wanna end this supply, that's fine - contract goes right back to its old state. But while I'm givin' ya supply, yer 'instances' don't get counted towards th' total left, neither. I mean, that's you gettin' the highest quality shit you would ever want, practically at cost, and most days ya won't even be workin' fer th' privilege."
Lebeaux inhaled slowly, lifting his hand to run gloved fingers through his hair as he exhaled a long sigh and considered that. “It would mean that every day that I should get my supply from you, I will be digging myself in deeper as well as paying you for the privilege of renting the shovel to do so.” He dropped his hand and laced his fingers together once again. “At least give me the ‘shovel’ free of charge.”
Ryoko adopts a sympathetic tone, and leans over the desk, leering over the sitting Elezen. "C'mon, now, Lebeaux, ya already got so much from me. My supplier ain't got infinite storage or product, ya know, an' yer far from my only customer. Ya got a great sword - one a' my best ever - an' a real nice gun, an' the very best somnus yer gonna find anywhere in Kugane. Ya got expensive tastes. But if ya'd rather just pay th' regular price... an' not get a better deal off than Daijiro is, then that's fine, too." Ryoko pretends to think hard about that.
Lebeaux smiled back at her. “That I do, and I make contacts and contracts to ensure that my tastes are well fed.” Just looking at him one could tell at a glance that his middle name was High Maintenance. “I don’t think a pinch of somnus here and there is too much to ask for as a little incentive to continue my current contract with you. Indefinitely.” At least as long as the supply lasted. “Yet if that’s too steep of a maintenance cost, the Kasai-gumi was not quite so well-to-do as I had first assumed. I’ll investigate other options. It has been a pleasure, as always.” He reached for the box to slide it closer to himself.
Ryoko leans back, with a grin on her face. "Tell ya what. I can give ya a pinch here and there ta keep ya on. Sure. But I catch ya sellin' it, or givin' so much as a puff ta someone else, then I'll hafta find a doctor can fix broken fingers fer ya."
Lebeaux slid the box into his lap and reached for his hat next, rising up to his feet and settling it atop his head before smoothing out his coat. “That sounds more than reasonable.” He smiled in return. “So long as you are my supplier, I’ll not count the instances towards the outstanding balance. Should I require a little extra for company, I will pay the original discounted price agreed. Reasonable as well?”
"If ya gotta buy extra, I'll split th' difference between th' discounted price an' th' regular. Yer still gonna be payin' much less than Daijiro." A grin. "Ain't that somethin' great ta hold over his head?"
Lebeaux smiled primly. “So you’re the one keeping his little menagerie well-stocked in recreational substances. I don’t find myself entirely surprised. Yet I suppose that will suffice. So long as my own supply comes as a courtesy.” A hand waved to dismiss her insistence against dealing. “I’m a chirurgeon. I will not stoop to peddling.”
"That's good. Real good. Glad ta hear it." She offers her right hand. "I do so enjoy doin' business with ya. An' hey, there anyone involved in yer little vacation that needs ta disappear?"
Lebeaux tilted his head and took her hand for a small shake, going so far as to bow at the waist to kiss the air above her knuckles. “Always a pleasure when we can find some common ground.” He straightened up and released her hand. “I’ve taken care of the problem, for the time being. And acquired myself a pocket Hearer. What luck. Should he become troublesome I’ll be sure to bring him to you first.”

Perhaps someone more knowledgable could weigh in.There are more than 230 vacation rentals that are available in Fawn Creek. Just keep in mind most of them have silicone with does well to hide the micro scratches but I'm not sure how does silicone react with resin. Most of the car quick detailers are very light wax, either natural or synthetic, they too should be safe. Now that did last a long time but I wouldn't recommend it for impervious material such as resin pens.Ī light coat of a light wax, gently buffed but hand, should yield the best result, unless there are deep scratches, I would not use a polish. I had a wood shop teacher in college that made stunning benches and bars out of fallen tree trunks, that he'd cover in layer upon layer of bees wax then buff it after he's put on upwards of twenty or thirty very heavy coats. I haven't tried it on my pens though, but in theory it should work the same.īees wax should be a safe wax to use on almost anything, it might not last very long though. I use wax on the ebonite bit of my pipes and that's pretty much what's recommended by pipe makers. After some time that wax will wear off, just as it does on wood flooring or a car's surface. One could mask all the trim then use a polish like semichrome, but perhaps a wax is all that's needed as you're not taking anything off as you would with a polish, rather the oils in the wax will clean and add a layer that gives one the shine they're looking for. I would be inclined to use a light wax over a polish just for fear of taking off the plating on the metal parts. So there - somewhat unorthodox idea, and quite likely not a new one, but perhaps can be useful Next I thought my 149 stand/holder can use some freshening-up, and while at it, did the pen too - both look great now! I know it sounds weird, but as it's designed to fill the gaps in top layer of coating with high-tension polymers, I figured it can't do any harm, so sprayed a bit on microfibre cloth and gave it a rub - the result has far surpassed my expectations - the inkwell is now as shiny as it was when I bought it (well, almost, but you need a 10x loupe to tell the difference). I decided to eBay my MB inkwell (as I've never actually used it in 16yrs and it's just silly to keep it as a decoration on my desk), but it's not quite a 'new-looking' as I would like it to be.ĭidn't want to use any abrasives or chemicals, so I remember what I use to keep my Merc shiny - Meguiars Ultimate Quik Detailer Well, not exactly polishing, rather just restoring a shine and dealing with micro-scratches.
