To those I know who are working themselves into a tizzy because Biden is old and Biden is boring and Biden is not handling Gaza the way they want and Biden is ten thousand other things that are not "a convicted felon with aspirations of fascist dictatorship" and are wondering why we can't just choose someone else -- anyone else! -- to be the Democratice nominee for President . . .
You had that chance. You really did. That's what party primary elections are for. The primaries are where a party chooses its nominee . . . and I bet you dollars to doughnuts that you didn't vote in yours. I work at elections, and I served as Assistant Registrar of Voters for my state's primary election back in April. Polls were open from six in the morning to eight in the evening. That's fourteen hours. We got a grand total of maybe fifteen or twenty people voting all day.
The primary is the moment to vote with your heart. It's the moment when you can tell the Democratic party that you think Biden is old and Biden is boring and Biden is not handling Gaza the way you want -- all things that were as true during primary season as they are now. Registered Democrats voted, and they voted overwhelmingly in favor of Biden. If you claim to respect the integrity of elections, then respect this. The people who showed up -- and it's always the people who show up -- chose Biden. Respect their choice, and move on to the general election.
The general is the moment to vote strategically. If you want things to keep bumbling along in the generally-decent-but-could-be-better way they have been for four years, you must vote for Biden. If you want us to descend into Project 2025, vote for Trump. Those are your choices. Third-party candidates will not avail you. The last time a third-party candidate won a state was 1968. The last time a third-party candidate came in second was 1912. The last time someone was President without a major party affiliation was 1868. It's not looking good for the third-party folks here.
So you'll go to the polls in November (where nice people like me will be there to welcome you and help you get your ballot together and sort out whatever problems you have), hold your nose, and vote strategically, either for Bumbling-Along or Fascist Dictatorship. And the lesson to take from all of this is: SHOW UP AT THE PRIMARIES and cast a Real Vote™ there. If the 18-year-old checker at my polling place who spent the day asking me for civics lessons and planning her political career understands why primaries are important, so can you.
