Miguel Diaz fluff alphabet

A = Attractive (What do they find attractive about the other?)

Miguel loves your smile. He’s a funny guy and he thinks your smile lights up a room so he makes it his mission to make you laugh as much as possible. If you have some crooked teeth, he thinks it’s adorable. Also, looking at your smile makes him think about your lips which just makes him want to kiss you.

B = Baby (Do they want a family? Why/Why not?)

Yes, after he gets a stable job. He would love kids but he doesn’t want to be like his dad and end up abandoning his family so he would make extra sure he could support the child and you and makes a conscious effort to be there for his family no matter what. Asking about their day, being involved in their sports/clubs/hobbies, making snacks when they have friends over. He just wants to be the Cool Dad ™ and would probably try to teach them karate before they could even sit up.

C = Cuddle (How do they cuddle?)

He loves to have you sit between his legs and lean back against his chest so he can wrap his arms around you and make sure you’re always safe and warm. It’s the perfect position for movies, video games, deep conversations, baths. He will also often come up behind you at a party and hold you like this if someone is hitting on you or if you look uncomfortable or bored. He can whisper little jokes in your ear or kiss you on the cheek.

D = Dates (What are dates with them like?)

He loves fun dates. You both have always found fancy dinner dates really awkward. He likes something where you guys can move around, do activities, and just let loose. The go-to’s are usually mini golf, the arcade, the zoo, or just a nice picnic in the park. He often gets you little gifts before dates, though, like flowers, a stuffed animal, or a cool rock he found. His Yaya taught him never to show up for a date empty handed. And he’s a total gentleman, never making you uncomfortable or rushing things. Miguel keeps his hands to himself unless instructed otherwise.

E = Everything (You are my ____ (e.g. my life, my world…)

You are my sunshine. As cheesy as it is, Miguel sees you as the shining light in his life. You make everything better, whether that’s an injury, a bad day at school, or losing a fight at training. He knows he can always go to you and be distracted by your beautiful smile.

F = Feelings (When did they know they were in love?)

Miguel first knew he was in love with you when you met his family for the first time. They invited you over for dinner one night and he told you his Yaya didn’t speak much english, so you asked him to teach you some spanish so you could talk with her. It wasn’t perfect, you made lots of grammar mistakes and really only said a couple sentences to her, but the effort you made combined with the smile on Yaya’s face made him fall absolutely head-over-heels.

If you already speak spanish, it would be seeing you talk with his Yaya and joke around with her over dinner.

G = Gentle (Are they gentle? If so, how?)

The most gentle boy on the face of the Earth. Like I said earlier, Miguel keeps his hands to himself unless you tell him otherwise. The first time you guys kiss, he barely moves a muscle. You had to grab his hands and put them on your waist. Even now, when he’s teaching you karate, he refuses to hit or grab you, so you honestly don’t really learn anything lol and if you’re sick or sleeping, he’s like a feather, so scared to disturb you. It’s like touching a kitten honestly

H = Hands (How do they like to hold hands?)

All. The. Time. He’s not too big on PDA, except for hand-holding. This is how he lets everyone know you’re taken without seeming possessive or gross. Miguel will grab your hand at the mall, at school, while y’all are cuddling, at the beach, literally whenever you’re in arm’s reach from him, he’s holding your hand.

I = Impression (What was their first impression?)

Miguel’s first impression of you is that you’re this bright ray of sunshine. He’s drawn to you like a magnet. Your eyes, your smile, your laugh! And when he finally works up the nerve to say hi (Strike first!) he thinks his heart might actually melt. When you actually laugh at the joke he makes and hold out your hand to introduce yourself, he turns bright red and can barely speak omfg this poor boy. But luckily you think it’s sweet and keep talking to him.

J = Jealousy (Do they get jealous?)

He did at first, we’ve all seen how he acts with Sam and Robby, but you lay down the law. You have to tell him that it’s not cool, it makes people uncomfy, and then he finally starts to work on it. Now he’s better. He still feels jealous sometimes, but he trusts you and can control himself a bit more.

K = Kiss (How do they kiss? Who initiated the first kiss?)

So your first kiss. You were giving him The Look for like 10 minutes straight and he never made a move. He just stared at you. So you had to be the first one to actually lean in, but once you did, he met you halfway. His kisses match his personality. Sweet, gentle, and goofy, but with a more dominant, aggressive side if you know how to bring it out ;)

L = Love (Who says ‘I love you’ first?)

He did. After you had dinner with his family and he realized he loved you, he told you almost immediately. This boy just wears his heart on his sleeve. He was walking you home and when you got to your house and turned around to kiss him goodnight, he had a funny look on his face. When you asked him what was wrong he kind of went ILOVEYOU! Really fast and you had to make him say it again slower because you thought he had a stroke or smth lmaooo but once he took a deep breath and said it more clearly, you jumped on him and kissed his whole face and said it back a hundred times.

M = Memory (What’s their favourite memory together?)

When he first introduced you to Sensei Lawrence. He thought Sensei was gonna be super mean and make fun of you, but turns out you guys had a lot in common. You loved 80’s rock music, and responded to his sass with even more sass. Johnny almost couldn’t believe Miguel was able to get such a cool babe. You guys all had lunch after taking a tour of the dojo, and it was a super fun day! You all drove around in Johnny’s car with the windows down listening to Guns ‘n Roses.

N = Nickel (Do they spoil? Do they buy the person they love everything?)

Miguel spoils you in his own little way. His family isn’t as fortunate as others, but he still finds ways to make you feel special. Instead of a diamond necklace, he gives you a cool rock he found outside and cleaned up. Instead of taking you to expensive restaurants, he spends all day cooking with Yaya to make a nice picnic for you guys to have on the beach. And he saves up to buy you nice gifts for your birthday or anniversary.

O = Orange (What colour reminds them of their other half?)

Rose gold. You’re so beautiful to him and have this natural charm that everyone falls for. You’re so radiant and yet soft and unique. He just love love loves you.

P = Pet names (What pet names do they use?)

Sweety, sweetheart, baby, gorgeous, and Princess during more intimate moments.

Q = Quaint (What is their favourite non-modern thing?)

80’s rock music. He learns to love it through Sensei Lawrence. He even saves up to buy a record player so he can feel more connected to the past.

R = Rainy Day (What do they like to do on a rainy day?)

Build blanket forts, cuddle, bake cookies, he might even let you put makeup on him if you ask nice.

S = Sad (How do they cheer themselves/others up?)

Humor. He loves cracking jokes and lightening the mood. If you’re ever feeling down you know you can go to him and he will turn that frown upside down in mere minutes. Honestly even just being in his presence makes you happier. He cheers himself up by working out, taking some alone time to get his feelings out, and then going out with some friends or with you.

T = Talking (What do they like to talk about?)

Umm, karate! Duh lol the boy is obsessed with it. Also superhero movies, video games, his day, he’s honestly kind of a rambler. He can talk about anything and everything if he’s nervous enough. Let’s not forget the gas station scene in season 1…

U = Unencumbered (What helps them relax?)

You, dark rooms, white noise, puppies, linen scented candles, his mom’s cooking.

V = Vaunt (What do they like to show off? What are they proud of?)

His new muscles. Ever since joining Cobra Kai, he’s gotten pretty ripped and now it’s a struggle to get him to keep his shirt on. He worked hard for that body, he wants people to see how good he looks!

W = Wedding (When, how, where do they propose?)

After college, he takes you on a hike up to this ridge overlooking a lake. It’s fall, the leaves are changing colors, and there’s no one around. You guys have been holding hands the whole time, but his hand is super sweaty even though it’s like 50 degrees out. You guys finally get to the top of the ridge and he grabs both your hands and tells you all the things he loves about you. This boy basically recites your whole love story, and as soon as he sticks his hand in his pocket you know what’s going on. He barely even got the box out of his pocket before you were jumping on him screaming Yes! You guys fell to the ground and he stopped you so he could officially get the words out. You were both crying, it was very beautiful.

X = Xylophone (What’s their song?)

More Than Words by Extreme. You guys dance to this at your wedding.

Y = Yes (Do they ever think of getting married/proposing?)

Absolutely. Y’all marry pretty young, like right out of college. He knew you were gonna get married on the first date.

Z = Zebra (If they wanted a pet, what would they get?)

Iguana. He thinks they’re like little dinosaurs! He would name it Wade because we know he loves Deadpool.

You turned on the gas lamp and admired the fire that burned within---a small and steady vermilion unlike the storm brewing in your heart. The words With Love, From Your Secret Admirer on its envelope mocked you, calling you a hypocrite as you remembered Mammon's troubled face in the bus stop. You removed the globe and witnessed the flames flicker and sputter, now mimicking your troubled mind.

Did you really love Mammon? Or did you love the ideals you built with the words he had written for you? You couldn't help but mull it over and over and over, tears streaming down your face. The letter hovered over the flames as your shaky hand refused to let it burn. You couldn't help but laugh at the fact that Mammon may be right.

"I'm the worst," you said bitterly as you moved the letter away from the fire, cries turning into desperate sobs. There, he had proven his point. He claimed he was scum, but you were an even worse one. You failed to notice the several knocks rapping at your door until it burst open upon your sobbing. You didn't even know who it was. You only realised someone was there when you found yourself in his arms. The soothing strokes he made on your back only worsened your crying. The way he called your name was unbelievably gentle, affections which you realised you weren't even capable of, permeating with every syllable. Eventually, his presence calmed you enough that you finally stopped crying and had enough sense to apologise for staining his shirt.

"Thank you, Levi."

Levi didn't say anything. Instead, he took the letter from your hand and made a small and calming smile. "Henry would do the same for the Lord of Shadow." You couldn't help but smile back a little in agreement.

"I heard everything from Mammon. I smacked that idiot for you." when you looked betrayed upon his words, he immediately said, "I didn't come here to ask you two to make up. I just…" he looked awkward as he continued speaking. "I just wanted know if you're okay."

You were sure Levi said something else, but your mind cherry picked some of his words, "Mammon told you?"

"He's worried and angry at himself for hurting you. Satan is trying to talk some sense into him right now." he gingerly moved the flames away from you and turned off the gas lamp. "Lucifer would probably hear about this tomorrow."

"Is he okay?"

"W-wh, after he hurt you like this you're asking if he's fine?"

"You've got it all wrong, Levi." You softly sighed. "I was the one who hurt him. I was the one who loved an illusion." The fact that he asked Levi to go after you only made you feel even more sorry. Even with how cruelly you had been inadvertently treating him, he still showed you his awkward way of caring. You truly didn't deserve him at all.

"I couldn't even burn his letter. This thing! Oh Levi. Can't you see? He's right! The fact that this letter is still in my hands is already telling of what I truly think about him." your eyes started to sting again, your trembling voice echoing your heartache. "What right do I have to get angry? It should be him who is. I'm a horrible person."

"That's not true."

"Then why can't I burn it?! Why do I still claim that I love him if I couldn't?"

He called your name again with the same gentle tone and tightened his embrace.

"You do love him." he stroked your head again. "But the Mammon who wrote your letter isn't the only Mammon that exists. It's stupid to get jealous of yourself, but I think I can understand him a little."

"You do?"

Levi laughed in response. Instead of answering your question, he changed the subject. "Say, what will you do if I tell you I wrote that letter?"

Huh? Where did that come from?

"I-it's only a hypothetical scenario, okay?! Like I'd ever write a letter to a normie like you!"

Your eyebrows knotted. "Why are you asking me that?"

You felt like Levi was blushing right now for some reason. "J-just answer the question!"

What if Levi wrote the letter? You just couldn't picture it. He never struck you as someone who would pour out their feelings anonymously(at least to you), and you were quite sure that he didn't see you in that way. Levi was a precious friend, one of your very first and also your dearest one in Devildom. Romance was something beyond your relationship, something deeper and closer that even the passions of romance pale in comparison---a gentle, steady love, always waiting for you with open arms. Levi didn't need to say anything for you to know that he felt the same way. When he noticed that you were having trouble with his question, he sighed and decided to give you a hint.

"What if you found out I wrote that letter or someone else did while you're dating Mammon? Would you call your feelings for him a lie?"

Feelings that started in lies? Loving an image of someone but not that someone himself? What do you feel about Mammon? You cared for him, that much didn't change. But if you were being honest, if that possibility were ever to happen…

"I...don't know." you looked at the letter in Levi's hands and hesitated. "What if I don't know the answer?"

Levi pulled away from you and finally smiled. "This romance stuff is too complicated for a shut-in like me," he admitted bashfully. "But I at least know that whatever answer you come up with is your own truth. It's okay now.

Lies or not, you really loved him. Even if you don't know if those feelings will change, what you're feeling now is also true."

So it's okay to continue loving Mammon even if it is a lie? You didn't realise you were thinking out loud because Levi actually replied to you.

"This had been an unpleasant experience for both of you, but you loved each other, right? You just need more time.

A-Asmo said I should pass that message by the way! I don't even know what he's talking about!"

Any tension or anxiety you felt at his admittance finally washed over, replaced by a hope that things will get better.

"Mammon--"

"Needs exactly that. You can talk to him later. Now, take my hand.

D-don't just gawk at mel Just so you know, I'll cry if you turn me down!"

Now you're tempted to turn him down. "What happens if I hold your hand?"

Levi tilted his head back and held a boyish grin. "You, me and Asmo. Death Dance Revolution. Do or Die: winner gets it all."

"And what is all, exactly?" you asked as you accepted his hand.

The grin remained on his face, and now he was holding a finger to his lips as if keeping all the secrets in the world.

"Only winners get to ask, noob."

And you found out, after several rounds later of getting absolutely destroyed by him and Asmo in the virtual dance floor that you were indeed a noob, and your questions were still left hanging in the air. But there was also ice cream and lots of pizza, so you supposed it was enough if your stomach was sated...for now at least.

Healing was a two-way street. Broken bonds that severed out of love even deeper wounds---you spent the rest of your weeks in Devildom rediscovering the love that had always been there with you, although hidden at plain sight.

It was Lucifer's gentle scolding, turning blind eyes at trivial blunders and pretending it had been his oversight. It was the warm meals Satan made for everyone, every morsel of food Beelzebub shared out of the goodness of his heart. It was the warm hugs Belphegor enveloped you, warming you on colder nights. It was Asmo's nicknames and kisses filled with adoration, of finding solace in Leviathan's gentle yet awkward company.

"Hi…human."

"Yeah…hi, non-human."

It was the way Mammon crinkled in laughter at your awkward greetings, the way he seemed to look so different in your eyes for the first time.

"So…there's the festival dance going on soon."

It was the way he smiled at you despite the hurt you have caused him, his love that forgave, and continued loving despite your hesitations.

"You're askin' out The Great Me? Pretty ballsy of ya, don't you think?"

It was the uncertainty of second chances, of taking off your rose-coloured glasses and seeing him, finally seeing him for who he was for the first time.

"Earth to Human? You there?"

"Y-YES! PLEASE GO OUT WITH ME AGAIN, GREAT MAMMON!"

Love was everything around you, even the pain that made you lose all hope, it was the way you picked yourself up again and learned from your mistakes.

"H-how am I supposed to turn ya down if ya shout like that?"

"So is that a yes?"

"Dammit! I ain't fallin' for that! You won't conquer my heart so easily!"

How did Mammon look to you now without the veneer of flowery words and idealisations?

"I'm up for a challenge! How many mountains should I climb? Should I rescue you from B☆wser?"

Did he change? Did your love waver? Or is it taking shape and forming a new kind of love budding in your heart?

"S-stop it…everyone is staring, dammit!"

"I don't care!"

"Well I do!"

I See You

Part 1:

The life of a superhero really isn't that glamorous. Everyone acts like being in a team means you always have each other back and are the best of friends. And while that is true to a point people love to forget just how annoying other people can be. Lance had been the newest recruit to the Paladins, he was technically only there for surveillance since he didn't really have a combat oriented power but after proving his skill as a sniper time and time again he was finally brought on as the team's eye in the sky. “Ok team the plan for the mission is simple.” Shiro began pointing to the screen with his cybernetic arm. Considering he was a cyborg it was kinda hilarious to have spent the last ten minutes watching him try and fail to get the computer working and eventually gave up to let Pidge take control, they all had the feeling that even if she wasn't a technopath she still would have been the best option for him. “Me and Keith will enter the compound at point B while Hunk covers point A in case anyone tries to escape. We need this to be a stealth mission so no busting down the walls ok buddy?” Hunk chuckled nervously “ill try, I'm sorry again for that truck I swore it was going to hit a kitten.” Shiro sighed “yeah I know, but maybe tossing it in the air wasn't the best option at the time.” he cleared his throat deciding to change the topic before they got too far off track “Lance you will be stationed on the clock tower covering me and Keith.” Lance gave him a lazy two finger salute “no problem boss, what would you guys do without your sniper.” “Exactly the same as normal without having to listen to you in our ear.” Keith huffed a small puff of fire came out his mouth. “Oh please, you would be dead a hundred times over without me hot head.” Keith raised an eyebrow “and whys your superpower again? Oh yeah, you got good eyesight right?�� Lance couldn't help but touch his glasses. His powers let him see far away and even zoom in onto small details. The problem was that the further he looked the worse his close up vision got. The medic said that he can't push himself much past 100 meters otherwise he would lose his sight entirely. “Shut up Keith you know he only needs those things because you keep running off.” Lance smiled at his best friend, never doubt that Hunk will be there to defend him. “Yes thank you for reminding me Hunk” Shiro pressed a button and a blue circle surrounded the map “50 meters, don't leave the circle or Lance cant keep an eye on you.” Keith didn't look happy but Lance didn't really care, they were off in less than an hour and he had to get ready.

Lance would be lying if he said he wasn't excited as he set up his rifle. Some may think watching down from an old abandoned clock tower is boring, but to Lance, it was like playing the most exciting video game. He carefully took off his glasses and placed them in his case as he zoomed in on Keith and Shiro checking around them “Your clear to enter.” “Rodger,” Shiro replied. “And here I thought my name was Lance.” He could see how they rolled their eyes but decided not to humour him and instead entered the building. They were lucky that large windows lined the top of the walls so Lance could watch everything instead of having to shoot through the concrete like he had to in the past. “I count seven hostiles, five to your right Shiro rest on your left Keith.” Lance pulled the trigger on his gun “light em up boys.” he smirked as the light bulb exploded above them and the targets began to panic. It went quickly after that in flashes of red and purple blasts, it was particularly amusing to watch one try to make a run for it right into the broad chest of Hunk. Poor guy was tossed back inside like a rag doll. After ten minutes the building was clear. “Lance, can you see the package?” Shiro asked trying to look where he believed Lance was and instead missed entirely and was more focused over his right shoulder. “Negative, there's a back office out of view check there.” Lance shrugged as they did just that. He was so focused on Shiro and Hunk entering the room that he almost missed the unmistakable silver briefcase flash on the back of a motorbike that sped away from the building. “Purple motorbike heading north has the case!” Lance yelled. “I'm on it” Keith blasted through the wall and took off running. Keith really was a sight to behold, his fire powers all flash and destruction making him so powerful but also so beautiful. Lance hated to admit it, but he could watch Keith for hours. However thanks to Keith speed and the thrill of the chase Lance didn't realise he had long since left the safe premature until the familiar ache returned to his eyes. “Keith buddy you're going too far I can’t follow you.” Lance hissed pulling his vision back to normal as he rubbed his eyes with a hiss of pain. “Thank don't, in a big boy I can look after myself.” “Sure you can cowboy, just try not to get yourself killed without me.” Keith didn't answer but then again Lance didn't expect him to. Judging from the sounds he was fighting and though Lance wanted to watch he knew from the static from the coms that Keith was well beyond his limit. He was content with just listening to Keith kick the bad guy's ass. Then Keith cried out in pain. “Keith?” No answer. “Goddammit Keith” Lance hissed as he looked around for any new perch he could get to. Anyway, he could get closer so he could help. There was nothing. This was an abandoned industrial area, they had been lucky to even find the clock tower. Lance bit his lip unsure what to do. Then Keith screamed and lance made up his mind. He steadied himself as he pushed his eyes to where he last saw Keith, then further and further until the colours began to dull. Keith was laying in an alleyway being kicked over and over again in the ribs. Lance took a breath ignoring how his eyes burned. He took aim as hot liquid ran down his cheeks. He fired as he blacked out.

Keith thought he was going to die. This guy was fireproof and no matter how many times he blasted him nothing happened. The guy was tougher and stronger than Keith and despite being a hell of a fighter ended up on the floor being beaten to a pulp. Then the guy stopped and fell to his knees a bullet hole in his neck. “Man Lance I gotta admit that was a good shot” Keith chuckled as he struggled to his feet. “Lance?” He was met with silence, his com had been damaged in the fight. Sighing Keith began the task of returning to his team and prepared himself for a lecture from Shiro on going off plan.

He expected to find his leader standing in the doorway with his arms crossed and a stern expression on his face. He never imagined to find him with blood covering the front of his shirt and a horrified look on his face. “Shiro? Oh God, what happened are you ok?” Shiro nodded numbly “its not my blood…” “Hunk?” Keith whipped his head around unable to see the friendly giant “did he get hurt?” “It wasn't hunk” No. Oh God no please not Lance. “W-what happened? He was supposed to be safe in his perch.” “You happened Keith.” Shiro muttered, “you knew to stay in the perimeter and despite that, you still ran off.” “I had to” Keith tried to defend himself but the next words to leave Shiro's mouth left a sense of cold dread in the pit of his stomach. “You were more than 200 meters away! That was twice Lance’s limit!” Shiro snapped grabbing Keith by the collar “because you decided to run off and play lone wolf Lance had to push himself too far, I found him bleeding from the eyes and passed out in a pool of his own blood.” Keith felt like he was going to be sick “w-where is he now?” Shiro let go of him “He’s heading back with Hunk, their performing emergency surgery… maybe they can save his eyes but… Keith, I want you to understand something. Even though you believed you were doing the right thing you didn't save any civilians or prevent any world ending event. You stopped a drug lord's address getting away. Something we could have done another day. Because of you, Lance may never see again.” Keith took off running. He had to get to Lance.

Safe - Chapter 12

QUICK UPDATE YO! this is quite a short chapter, however, i wanted to break this down into one to three chapters hehe i dont rlly know but enjoy :)

In his world, being a part of a mafia gang, known as Bangtan Boys, is a bit terrifying. They were truly a filthy rich and powerful group that everyone feared. 22-year old Jimin was described as the stealthiest and most skilled member of Bangtan, playing an important part in their group. Whereas for 20-year-old (Y/N), a genius with a weak heart is suffering inside the cruel world as she is experimented on on the daily basis. Jimin finds himself protecting a gifted girl whose memory can hold numerous things in a blink of an eye. Jimin finds an interest in her, visioning that she may be a valuable asset to their group. Jimin has never paid attention to girls. However, that started to change when he met her.

(Y/N) wasn't exactly a mistake.

It happened years ago when Shin Hyunjae, known as the leader of the Royal Aces, supposedly met the love of his life. The young couple had it all, until the day he found out she was pregnant. She was even married to Hyunjae, but he left her once (Y/N) was born, forcing her to raise their only child in poverty.

But, here she was, not knowing where her mother was, finally escaping the lab after ten years, and now, finally meeting her biological father for the first time.

(Y/N) remembered the times where she heard her mother cry, who at times, would lock herself in the bathroom, crying for her father's return. (Y/N) never questioned her but was always there for comfort. But one thing she never questioned yet longed to ask was about her father, about who he was and why he was never there.

"Umma, when is appa coming home?" She remembered asking her mother that same question every day, but she was always given the same response, "Soon, I promise." But he never came.

(Y/N) soon learned that it wasn't too common for a child to meet their biological father later on in their life, but there was that slight chance where it can happen. (Y/N) has never met her father all her life and all she hoped for was that slight chance to happen to her.

But here she was, face to face with her father after nearly 21 years.

They had the same cheekbones, nose and hair colour. His beard looking freshly trimmed and his arms were covered in tattoos. He even has some on his neck, too. He had his hair slightly long but was slick back with a bit of gel. He was rather tall, possibly Yoongi's height, and possessed a skinny yet had a slightly muscular build.

Biting her lip, she looked over at the boys, "C-Can I have a moment, please?" She asked quietly as she looked over at the nervous yet anticipating boys. Namjoon nodded, standing up to his feet, looking at the rest of the boys, "Give them some space, guys." Namjoon says and the boys almost immediately follow Namjoon.

Jimin sighed, looking over at (Y/N) as he walked by. He held her hand for a brief moment before smiling softly at her, "You gonna be okay?" He asked quietly as she nodded, "Mhm," She hummed as Jimin pursed his lips together before pressing a soft kiss to her temple before glancing at Hyunjae with a low glare, walking away.

(Y/N) then let out a breath, walking closer to him as she walked into the living room. She stopped her tracks, stopping at a rather close yet far distance from her father. "Yeah, it has been a long time," She says, clasping her hands together, "Nearly 21 years."

"W-Would you like to have a seat?" She asked, mentally slapping herself for asking that. Hyunjae smiled, "Of course," He says before they sat down on one of the couches. "When did you get so beautiful?" Hyunjae smiled at her, "You grew up to be a fine woman."

(Y/N) scoffed, a small smile appearing on her face, "How'd you find me?" She asked quietly. Hyunjae leaned back, "Well," He started, "I actually came down here for work." He sent her a look, referring to gang business, "And uh, well, I thought about you." He says truthfully, placing his hands on his knees, rubbing them softly, "I had my men try to find your location. But I ended up finding out through Hyejin, the tattoo artist."

(Y/N) widen her eyes, "H-Hyejin?"

Hyunjae nodded, "Yes." He says, noticing the tattoo on her neck, "You got a tattoo? Already?" He asked with a playful smile. (Y/N) found herself smiling wider, placing a hand on her neck, "Yeah, it's still healing, though." She mumbled.

"B-But, hey, I'm doing fine. Yeah..." She was at a loss for words. Although she longed for this moment to happen, she didn't want it to go like this, especially with the boys knowing who he was. "You know what? I got a lot of work to do, mostly training." She says, standing up, not really knowing what she was doing. But she knew was that this wasn't the right time to finally meet her father, too much was already happening around her.

Hyunjae nodded, raising a hand up, "I understand." He stood up, shoving his pockets in his zip-up hoodie.

"Ah, you take care of yourself, you hear?" Hyunjae says, sounding like he actually meant it. (Y/N) pursed her lips together, rubbing her hands together out of habit. "Y-Yeah, you too, okay?"

Hyunjae pressed his lips into a thin line before smiling, a hint of sadness yet happiness is written over it. Hyunjae showed himself the way to the front door as (Y/N)'s eyes trailed his figure. (Y/N) bit her lip, was she really going to let him go away like that? This was the first time she has ever seen him in her life and she's allowing him to leave? What if that was the last time she was going to see him?

Clenching her jaw, she walked after him, "Wait," She says, slowing down as her father turned around, facing her. "Um, hey." She started, scratching the back of her neck.

"W-Would... Would you want to stop by here later, and you know, have some dinner?" She offered shyly, "This is my first time seeing you in my life. And I want to at least get to know who my biological father is." She says, offering a small smile as Hyunjae returned the gesture. Even their smile looked alike.

"Ah, well, you can tell that these boys," He says, looking around the mansion as he referred to Bangtan, "and I aren't on very good terms. I'm not welcomed here, you know what I mean?" He chuckled as (Y/N) shook her head, "No, no, I'm sure they'll be fine with it, you're my father after all." She mumbled, "I end training at 5 PM." She says as Hyunjae nodded, "Oh, that's great, I'll come by then." He responds before opening their front door, leaving.

(Y/N) didn't bother watching his retreating form. She let out a deep sigh, closing the front door.

"Wow, 20 years." She looked up to see Namjoon, "You must be going through a train of emotions, huh?"

She scoffed, breaking into a smile, "Ah, no, it's not that big." She says, walking past him as Namjoon sighed, "Sure," He started, watching (Y/N) take a seat down on a couch, "(Y/N), listen, we're all here for you." (Y/N) looked up at him with a smile,

"You're a part of us now."

"Is Hyunjae really your dad?"

(Y/N) lowered her gun, looking over at Jungkook with a faint smile, "Yeah, he is." She stared at the gun she held as she spoke, "It's kinda crazy, y'know? Meeting him for the first time and all." She mumbled as Jungkook nodded, "Yeah, I get what you mean." The maknae sighed, "I haven't seen my parents since I was 14. I guess we both have something in common." Jungkook smiled at (Y/N), who softly returned the gesture.

"Yeah, I suppose we do." She says before ogling at the time on her phone, "O-Oh no, it's 4:50 PM," She looked over at Jungkook, "He's coming over at 5."

Jungkook nodded, "Okay, that's fine. We can cut short today," He grinned at the older girl, "Are you sure?" She asked as Jungkook nodded once more, "Yeah, I'm sure noona. It's your first time meeting him, you deserve to spend time with father."

(Y/N) placed a hand on his shoulder, "Thank you, Jungkook." She says as the boy nodded his head, "Don't mention it, noona." He says, wrapping an arm around her shoulders as they walk back to the mansion.

Jimin rubbed his hands together in confusion and in anger. "Jimin, calm down. She's just having a night out with her father." Jin shook his head over at the boy. Hoseok chuckled, "It's not like he's going to take her away."

Jimin huffed, "I'm just getting a bad feeling." He mumbled as Yoongi nodded his head, "Me too."

The doorbell suddenly rang as Jimin got up, "I'll get it." He grumbled. Jimin wasn't in the best mood. Hearing that (Y/N) was going out with her father gave him a bad feeling. Although he was happy for her, he was quite angry with Hyunjae’s sudden appearance.

He opens the door to find Jungkook and (Y/N), back from training. His eyes were focused on the girl and found himself smiling softly, "How was training?" He asked, opening the door wider and stepping out of the way for the two to walk in. "It was fun." Jungkook says, skipping down to the basement with the guns, "I'm just bringing these two down." Is all he says before disappearing.

Jimin then turned to (Y/N), closing the door, "How are you?" He asked softly, pulling her in close as she smiled up at him, "I'm pretty happy, to be honest." She says, "I'm excited, too." Jimin nodded, pressing his plump lips to her temple, "It's almost 5, you should start getting ready." He says as she nodded, "Yeah, I should," She chuckled before pulling away from Jimin's grasp, walking up the stairs.

Jimin watched her retreating form, licking his lips as he felt a presence come up beside him, "You have a bad feeling too, huh?" Taehyung asked as Jimin huffed, "Yeah."

Taehyung licked his lips, "I do too," He sighed, "Do you know where he's taking her out to eat?" The hybrid asked as Jimin shrugged, "Not really. All I know is that they're going to watch a movie." Taehyung then smirked over at him, "He's not going to take her away, okay?" Taehyung reassured as Jimin rolled his eyes, "That's not what I'm afraid of."

"Then what is it?"

"That he's going to leave her again."

Taehyung chuckled at his response, "I don't think that's going to happen." He says before skipping up the stairs, "I'm going to see how (Y/N) is~" Is all Taehyung says before disappearing. Jimin sighed, looking down at his hands, "Calm the fuck down, Jimin." He says before walking into the kitchen once again.

(Y/N) scanned her appearance in the mirror, a bit unsure of her choice of clothing. She wore a simple white turtleneck tucked into dark jeans.

"You look so cute!" She turned to see Taehyung, grinning over at her. She broke into a smile, "Thank you." She says before picking up her phone and bag, "I hope you have fun tonight." Taehyung says. Before she could respond, the doorbell rings once more.

Taehyung sent her a look, "I guess that's your father." He says as (Y/N) nodded her head, a big grin forming on her face, "Yeah, I guess it is." She says before walking down the stairs with Taehyung at her side, "I'll be in the basement with Jungkook." Taehyung says as he left her side, wanting to give her and her father some time alone.

She nodded over at the hybrid before opening the door. Her father wore a simple black long sleeve under a jacket and black jeans, his hair still slicked back yet some hairs stook out.

She offered him a smile, motioning him to come in, "Thank you for taking me out tonight." She says quietly, "Anything for my little girl." He smiled warily at her as (Y/N) felt her heart warm up at his comment. Of course, it was her father, she finally had a father figure to look up to after all these years. Just hearing those words made her feel like she was complete.

"Um, here, you can sit in the living room for now. I'll be right back." She says as he nodded, "Alright, no problem." He says, obeying her as he took a seat. (Y/N) made her way into the kitchen, meeting up with Jin and Hoseok.

Jin noticed her presence and smiled, "(Y/N)," He greeted, motioning her to come closer. He stopped with what he was doing before turning fully towards her, "How are you doing?"

(Y/N) scoffed, chuckling a bit and flailing her arms over and about, "Ah, I'm good, Jin oppa." She breathed deeply, "I have a feeling Jimin's not going to be fine with this." She sighed, not knowing about Jimin's whereabouts. She knew Jimin had some type of relation to her situation; his father leaving him after training him till he was a teenager.

"Do you think he'll be okay with it?" She asked as Hoseok shrugged, "I think so... Yeah." (Y/N) could tell Hoseok was having a hard time understanding the situation and clearly is angered by it. Who could blame him? Finally meeting your father after he abandoned you when you were just a baby is a tough situation.

(Y/N) sent them a smile and a thank you before walking back to the living room, "I'm back," She says before seeing Yoongi come back down the stairs, "Ah, Yoongi oppa." She says, motioning him to come over, "I'm sure you've met my father, right?"

"Yeah, he's your deadbeat father who left you and your mother flat." Yoongi says, sending Hyunjae a look as Jin came into the room, hushing Yoongi as he sat Yoongi down a couch, "Sorry about that, Hyunjae." Jin apologized to the man before sending a look to Yoongi, "How about we all just sit down for a bit." Jin says, as (Y/N) also sent Yoongi a look before smiling over at her father.

Jin then turned on the TV to relieve the tension in the room.

"Jin hyung?" Then came in Jimin's voice. (Y/N) looked over to see Jimin come through the hall. Jimin sighed, looking for Jin before landing his eyes on Hyunjae. Jimin clenched his jaw before turning his heel, walking the other way. (Y/N) furrowed her brows at the boy, what was up with him?

"Jimin," Jin called, "Can you help me with something in the kitchen, please?" Hearing Jimin's sigh, he nodded before walking into the kitchen with Jin.

"Sorry about that," (Y/N) mumbled at her father as Hyunjae raised his hands, "It's fine." He sighed before standing up to his feet, "I should go." He mumbled as Yoongi rolled his eyes, "Oh, don't go." He started, "Who knows if we'll see you again?"

Hyunjae gulped before taking a seat once more as (Y/N) sat next to him, a few inches away from him.

"Yoongi." (Y/N) warned him as Yoongi shrugged. (Y/N) sighed before Hoseok came in, "I must be crazy," Hyunhae chuckled, "Hoseok? A cyborg?" He says as Hoseok sent him a fake smile, "Yeah, just one of Jin's ways to save my life." He mumbled, taking a seat next Yoongi. Hyunjae's smile then slightly faltered when he watched the television.

"You know, (Y/N)," He started and pointed at the TV, "I used to hold you just like that." He says as there was a baby being held by its mother on the TV screen. (Y/N) smiled sadly at him, opening her mouth to respond before Yoongi just had to interrupt once more.

"Then why did you run out on her?"

(Y/N) sighed once more, sending him a look as Hoseok quietly chuckled. Jimin and Jin, and this time Namjoon was with them as they came back into the room as Jimin looked a bit calmer and relaxed than he was before. "Hyunjae." Jimin started, "It's been a while."

Hyunjae grinned at him, "It has been, huh?" He chuckled as Namjoon took a seat on an armrest. Jimin then stood next to the couch (Y/N) sat on, eyeing her and Hyunjae. "How long are you in Seoul for?" Namjoon asked, knowing that the man's gang was primarily from Busan. "Ah, only for a bit. For business, really."

"Then why did you show up to find your daughter that you abandoned?" Jimin suddenly asked as (Y/N) sent him a look right away, "Jimin." She warned as Jin turned to him, "What did I tell you?" Jin turned to him with a stern look as Jimin sighed.

"I think I'm going to skip dinner," Jimin says before taking a few steps back, staring at Hyunjae with a glare. "I just lost my appetite."

(Y/N) watched Jimin make his way up the stairs. She bit her lip, did Jimin really think of her father in that way?

(Y/N) and Hyunjae stepped out of the auditorium as they both shared a laugh, "That was some horror movie." She chuckled, eyeing him before watching a family walk out together, sharing a laugh as well. She watched sadly before taking a seat on a bench next to the arcade.

"(Y/N)," Her father started, "I owe you an explanation." He says as he sat next to her. "Ah, no you don't." She brushed him off as he shook his head, "I do," He sighed as he glanced at her, "When the day came, the day you were born," He chuckled, shaking his head at the process, "It was one of the best days of my life." He admitted.

He then raised his hands in front of him, gesturing them as if he was holding a baby, "I remembered the first time I held you." He says before glancing back at (Y/N), "I never wanted to put you down when I held you."

It was then (Y/N)'s turn to glance at him, "Then... Why did you?"

Hyunjae leaned forward, turning to his daughter, "I... I wasn't ready. To be a father, I mean."

"I felt like I was trapped, all my freedom was taken away. I had a responsibility, and that was you." (Y/N) clenched her jaw, clasping her hands together as she twiddled with her thumbs. "And I just ran away that one day." Hyunjae licked his lips and scooted closer to (Y/N), "I was a coward and I was selfish. I'm sorry." He finally apologized.

(Y/N) felt anger rise as she stood up, furrowing her brows, "Why are you telling me this now?"

"Well, because you're my daughter. And I love you."

(Y/N) breathed inhaled deeply, feeling her breathing hitch before he stood up as well, "I'm a different man now and I want to be a part of your life. If you let me." He says as (Y/N) quirked an eyebrow, "Oh, so you want to be a part of my life now? How?"

"We can get to know one another." He smiled before stepping closely, "And did you know, you got your heart condition from your old man, too. Not just from your mother." (Y/N) furrowed her brows, "What?" She asked before Hyunjae pulled out a pill bottle, looking quite identical from hers.

"I'm pretty sure you've been told that you have gotten it from your mother, but, me as well." He chuckled, "Runs in the family."

(Y/N) smiled softly before shrugging, "Yeah, I guess." She says, "I miss her." She mumbled as Hyunjae sighed, "I heard what you've been through." He says as (Y/N) snapped her eyes at him, "How?"

"The boys told me. Told me how you got here. And it must've been hard." He sighed, placing his hands on her shoulders, "I should've been there to protect you like a normal father would've done." He says as he shook his head, "But, I know one thing, and that's about your mother."

"Where is she? Is she okay?--"

"She's fine. I managed to find her location." He smiled sadly, "She moved on and lost her memory apparently. But now, she's living happily with a man and a child of her own, too, in America."

(Y/N) then felt as if her heart shattered. She let out a breath, looking down at her hands.

It's been 11 years since she has seen her mother. All she knew was that her mother was taken under Mr Han's care, taking care of her illness. (Y/N) has always known her mother was a victim of being a test subject as well before meeting her father. Although her mother escaped, she was diagnosed with an illness, however, it was different from (Y/N)'s.

(Y/N) felt tears well up in her eyes, wanting nothing more than to just see her mother once more.

All she knew then was that her mother was put into a state of deep depression due to the kidnapping of her daughter. And because of that, she was given antidepressant drugs. This led to the point where there was a degree of memory impairment, meaning memory loss. Although that happened, she was healed and was released from Mr Han's care.

(Y/N) remembered the time when she found out about her mother losing the memory of her own daughter, she had cried for many days, maybe even months. She remembered how her cries bounced off the walls of her cell and how red her eyes were, Banjo had even thought she was dead one time. However, she fought and fought Banjo, begging to see her mother before she was released.

(Y/N) was able to find out that the memory loss was due to the blocking action of serotonin and norepinephrine -- the two of the brain's key chemical messengers.

Although her wish did not come true, she was given punishment. 10 lashes on her bare back, 2 drug injections at once, and a week in the room where all misbehaved test subjects spent their days in. Some don't even come out alive due to starvation and lack of water. She considered herself lucky to come out alive.

But knowing her mother was out there living her best life with a new family broke her, yet she was happy her mother was no longer suffering. And perhaps (Y/N) should move on too, and maybe could find her happy place by then.

"So, she really forgot about me, huh?" She mumbled as Hyunjae nodded, "I believe so," He says before sending her a small smile, "But you got me, right? Your old man!" He says, noticing the tears in her eyes. He licked his lips before guiding towards the arcade, stopping in front of a zombie game.

He reached into his pocket, inserting a few coins before picking up the plastic gun that was attached to the game. "How about I show you my shooting skills?" He chuckled as the game started with zombies coming at the camera. Hyunjae shot the zombies on the screen swiftly.

(Y/N) chuckled at the sight, noticing that he was about to break the high score. "W-Wow, you're good at this." She mumbled, noticing a small crowd circle the two, watching Hyunjae shoot down the zombies and successfully breaking the record.

"He's really good!" Says a kid behind (Y/N). (Y/N) then turned to the kid, a small smile on her face, "Yeah, he is, huh?" She chuckled, "That's my dad." She says with a proud smile.

Maybe having her dad with her wasn't so bad. And maybe he's really here for good.

"Wow, Jiminnie, that was pretty mean." Taehyung pouted, looking over at the older boy, "Yeah, I bet noona was pretty upset when you said that." Jungkook says, however, his eyes were focused on the TV screen. Jimin shrugged, "What? It's the truth." Jimin says and looked over at Yoongi, "Even hyung has the same idea." He says Yoongi nodded, "Mhm."

Jimin's ears then perked up to hear the front door open, "We're back!" Jimin hears (Y/N)'s voice, causing him to turn around. All of the seven boys sat in the living room and waited for (Y/N)'s return, just in case Hyunjae did something wrong. They even watched Jungkook play Overwatch.

"Did you guys have fun?" Jin asked as he stood up to his feet. (Y/N) grinned widely, "Yeah! We watched two movies," She chuckled, "Even had some fun in the arcade!" Hyunjae pointed over at (Y/N), "(Y/N) even broke the record on the hardest sudoku arcade game there." He chuckled, "That's my girl!" The two broke into laughter and smiles.

"I'm glad you two got to spend time together." Hoseok smiled as Hyunjae huffed, "Oh, we're just getting started." He chuckled as Jimin narrowed his eyes at Hyunjae, "What do you mean?" He asked.

"Oh, my dad will be going back to work the day after tomorrow, and uh, well I'm going with him." (Y/N) says as Jimin widen his eyes, "What? Where? You can't just leave." Jimin says as he stood up.

"I'll be doing business in Geojedo Island," Hyunjae started, "And hearing that my little girl has been wanting to go to the islands, I asked myself, why not bring her along?" He chuckled. This got the boys to turn to the two, eyes widen in shock and confusion, clearly not wanting (Y/N) to leave.

Jimin crossed his arms, "Well, she specifically wanted to go to Jeju island, not Geojedo island." He says, remembering what (Y/N) has told him.

(Y/N) sent Jimin a sheepish smile as Hyunjae bit his lip and shrugged, "I think it's a great way for (Y/N) to explore the country. After knowing what has happened to her for the past 10 years or so." He murmured as Namjoon sighed, "Yeah, we understand but--"

"Forget it." Jimin hissed as Hyunjae slumped his shoulders a bit, "Oh, Jimin, c'mon." He says while he shook his head, "The girl could use a bit of adventure."

"Excuse me, but last time I checked, this is a family conversation." Jimin says coldly as (Y/N) narrowed her eyes at Jimin, brows slightly furrowed and lips into a frown, "Jimin--"

"It's fine," Hyunjae says, looking over at her, "It's fine," He says once more before taking a few steps back, "I'll be going now." He says before leaving the house. And once he did, (Y/N) turned to Jimin.

"Jimin, that wasn't nice, the way you disrespected him, that's my father!" She says, taking a few steps towards him. Jimin clenched his fists, "Well, to hell with your dad!"

(Y/N) widen her eyes at his words, "Jimin, c'mon, that's--" Taehyung started but Jimin cut him off, "He comes in after 21 years--"

"20!" She corrected as Jimin scoffed, "Oh, fuck me, 20 years. 20 years my ass! That guy is acting like nothing even happened!" Jimin raised his voice, stepping closer to (Y/N), fire burning in his eyes, "This is the same guy that did not think enough of you! Wake the fuck up, (Y/N)!"

"Jimin--" Jin warned as (Y/N) heaved in a breathe, chin up high as she looked up at Jimin. Although his words did hurt at first, she remained calm.

"He made a mistake." She says slowly, "I forgave him, why can't you? You don't even know him!" Jimin shook his head, "I've known him for 2 years out of business until that rat fucked things up, running out on us. I think I know him just enough to know what type of person he is."

(Y/N) sniffed, almost feeling the tears well up in her eyes. She's never argued with Jimin before, and she didn't like it at all. Especially if was about her father, "Stop being ridiculous! My old man never came home, no matter how much I begged!" She cried. "And he's finally here. Why can't you be happy for me?"

Jimin shook his head at her, "He's not doing this for you. He's doing this for himself." He snapped. (Y/N) shook her head, turning heel as she walked towards the foyer with Jimin following. "And if you think any different, then you must be blind! Stop being so goddamn stubborn and listen to me, dammit!" Jimin growled.

"Hey! Hey, calm down. Just calm down." Jin followed the two, "Let's talk about this another time."

(Y/N) shook her head, "There's nothing to talk about Jin." She says, looking at Jin before flickering back over to Jimin, "And you know what? I've been waiting for this for a long time-- hell, my whole life! I'm spending the next two weeks with him and no one is stopping me."

"Oh yeah? Well, I don't fucking think so--" Jimin says before (Y/N) cut him off, stepping closer to his face.

"Who cares what you think, Jimin?! You are not my goddamn father!" She yelled, surprising Jimin and the boys.

Jungkook gulped, his eyes darting both at Jimin and (Y/N) as Taehyung had his wolf ears lay flat on his head. Yoongi stared at the TV screen as Hoseok twiddled with his robotic fingers. Namjoon sighed, shaking his head at the situation as Jin stared at (Y/N) with sorrow in his eyes.

Jimin only looked at her with furrowed brows, eyes filled with anger yet sadness. He didn't want her to go, especially with her father. Who knows what could happen on their trip. What if she never came back?

(Y/N) shook her head at him, a few tears trailing down her cheeks before turning away. She let out a few sobs before opening the front door and slamming it closed as she left the house.

Jimin let out a breath before turning to the boys, shaking his head, "Just watch that sick motherfucker leave, just watch and I'll say I told you so." He hissed before walking up the stairs, slamming his bedroom door behind him.

Namjoon sighed, "Well, that's enough drama for today." He says before walking up the stairs as Jungkook looked over at Taehyung, "Hyung, is (Y/N) really going to leave? For two weeks?" He asked as Taehyung shrugged, "I guess so. But there could be that chance that (Y/N) will go home. Her real home, with her father."

"You think so?"

"I don't know, but it could happen."

(Y/N) did not come home that night and it killed Jimin inside. He wasn't so used to having (Y/N) not in his arms. He didn't get any sleep last night, all because of his fight with (Y/N). Instead of sleeping, he fiddled with the bracelet she gave him.

However, he was still upset with what happened the other day.

Jimin walked into the kitchen as Taehyung smiled at him, "There he is," Jimin looked at him, "Shut up." Is all he says, dark circles visible under his eyes and his voice quite raspy. Hoseok sighed, "Stop moping, Jimin. She'll come around." The cyborg reassured, "I'm sure (Y/N) didn't mean anything that she said."

Jimin clenched his jaw before turning to the two boys, "Okay, if she didn't mean anything, why did she say it?" He asked, grabbing a glass cup, "I gave her what she deserved. Whatever she needed, whether if she was feeling upset or needed a bit of reassuring, I was always there for her." He says as he slammed the cup down on the counter, causing it to shatter due to the hard impact.

Jimin sighed, staring at the shattered glass in his hands. Taehyung looked at Jimin before shaking his head at him. "Sure, you've done everything for her," Taehyung started but before he could continue, Jimin shook his head, "Yeah but now it's like all that shit never mattered." He mumbled, cleaning up the mess, throwing away all the glass pieces in the garbage.

"I can't believe she could be selfish, throwing me away like that, after everything I did." He mumbled as Hoseok sighed, "Get a hold of yourself, Jimin. Do you hear what you're saying right now?"

"Somebody's being selfish," Hoseok says as Taehyung nodded, "But it's not (Y/N) who's selfish, it's you."

Jimin blinked a few times before sighing, nodding his head, "I suppose that's true." He mumbled as Taehyung shook his head at him, "Honestly, Jiminnie, I know you can be such a hard head sometimes, but I think you need to apologize." Hoseok nodded in agreement, "You should apologize once she comes back."

Jimin shook his head, "You make it sound so easy." He grumbled. Hoseok took this as a cue to stay quiet, thinking maybe Jimin was in deep thought for a moment. After noticing the cyborg's gaze, he sighed and relaxed his posture.

"I'm just... A little worried that (Y/N) won't ever come back. I don't want that." He tells the two as Taehyung nodded his head, his silver hair bouncing. The two completely understood what Jimin was trying to stay, none of them wanted (Y/N) to leave and never come back.

"Well, Jiminnie, I think I can help you." He grinned, "Your relationship with (Y/N)-ah is special to you and I'm sure it's special to her as well. So, I'll give you some advice on how to be romantic and stuff. So in that way, she can forgive you." Jimin pouted at the thought before swallowing his pride, crossing his arms.

"Fine. Teach me, then."

Tristan Oliver Q&A.

“We have had far more problems shooting on a 5D than we ever did on film. The sheer absurdity of the throwaway society and obsolescence leaves a bad taste in the mouth.”

Cinematographer Tristan Oliver takes us behind the scenes of the Wallace & Gromit train-chase scene, a flood on Isle of Dogs, and the time he acted with Colin Firth, Rupert Everett and Cary Elwes in 80s British romance Another Country.

Oliver was the man behind many of the cameras on stop motion films including Isle of Dogs, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, ParaNorman and Chicken Run. He also filmed the Academy Award-nominated Loving Vincent.

We asked him some of your questions and some of our own (but we did not ask him “what is Wes Anderson like?”—read on to find out why).

Several Letterboxd members (including ReiJr, Curtis and Nicolas Inard) want to know what drew you to animation cinematography over live action, and what makes it interesting for you?

Well, obviously it’s a ridiculous way to make a living by any definition and I don’t think I ever really, actively wanted to do it. I just kind of fell into it. I was shooting some pop promos for friends and needed to borrow some lights and I knew a couple of people at Aardman—at that time it was literally a couple of dozen people. They said “Oh great, what are you doing next week?”

It was so great—they never used to schedule anything. They just used to ask you in and you’d stay until the job finished a few weeks later. So I stayed as a freelancer with them for a very long time. At the same time, I had a child, so I needed some regular income. I stuck at it at Aardman and I was good at it and they liked me.

It was an exciting time inasmuch as they were reinventing the entire look of stop-frame [animation], because stop-frame really was kids’ TV up until that time—it was super quick and rough and very crudely photographed. Big, soft lights and go home and forget about it. So what we started to do was create a very cinematic look for it, and make it into a much bigger canvas and bigger screen. Our driving motivation was that we made no concession at all to the fact that it was animation, we just tried to make it look nice.

[Animation] was a genre that was neglectful of its cinematography, and even now, I meet animators who don’t really care about it. It’s all about puppets as far as they’re concerned, and I think generally anyone watching the films doesn’t really care about cinematography. It’s the Cinderella department. People are all over the props and puppets.

Immediately getting a little more technical, how does one pull off a rack focus with moving stop motion elements in the shot? —Gina

That’s very interesting because of course stop motion isn’t moving. It’s entirely static until you move it. So a rack focus is just broken down into as many frames as you want it to take place over. So if it’s a twelve-frame or an eight-frame rack focus, in one way you can put a piece of tape over the lens and you move it one notch each frame. Or, we use a motion control computer to do it, which we do these days because it’s much smoother. The animator will press a button, the camera takes a frame, the motion control computer moves—and the animation software will trigger what needs to be triggered.

Although the camera move is conceived in real time, you know, A-to-B, if it takes four seconds you can run it at four seconds or you can run it at a frame a time—now move your puppet and off it goes. So the puppet follows the camera, as it were.

Motion control is one of the things that really liberated us. When we were setting up Chicken Run, that was suddenly a film that needed to play out on a cinema screen rather than a television screen, and moving the camera through space was one of the ways to expand that space. We kind of take it for granted that we can do that now.

I was wondering how different lighting a set for a stop motion film is compared to a live-action film and maybe what some challenges of lighting a stop-motion film are? Thanks, I love your work! —Ben

Thank you Ben! Well. I would say that aesthetically there should be no difference because, coming back to my original point, one’s aim should be to make something look beautiful and not really concede in any way to the fact that you are shooting animation.

But there are some issues. Primarily of course the size of what you’re shooting—and this means that relative to the characters you’re shooting, the camera is very, very large. The camera is kind of the size of a small car inside a domestic environment. It’s normally as tall as the character, so you do have issues lighting the character without the camera getting in way. You also have enormous issues with depth of focus because normally we are working right up to the minimum [focal point] of the lens. So to get stuff looking natural, you have to work at a very tiny aperture to get the depth of field that you’d find acceptable in live action.

A puppet’s head might only be the size of the top of my thumb and if I focus on its eye I might find that its nose and ears are unacceptably out of focus. So we are really asking the lenses to do something they were never really designed to do well, which is to work at tiny stops. Most lenses are optimized around ƒ/4, ƒ/5, ƒ/6 and we typically use them around ƒ/14. We really do beat them into submission.

The other issue is heat, of course. We don’t want to be cooking the animators or the puppets or the environments. Luckily, we don’t need a huge amount of intensity with light because we can vary our shutter speed, because we are taking shots one frame at a time. But we do need to keep sets comfortable. We do occasionally use large lights—especially if we’re shooting daylight exteriors—because you very quickly give away that they’re models [if] the shadows fan out, and real shadows don’t do that. They remain parallel, or “coherent” as we call it.

Has LED lighting changed DOP work for stop motion? —Tim

Yes, LED has in many ways transformed our world. The reason being that it’s very tiny so you can hide it and it’s very cool so it doesn’t produce any heat, and also you can dim it without the colour changing.

As an example, on Isle of Dogs we have a large theater set which is all painted with red and black lacquer in the Japanese style and it is lit by paper lanterns (which are actually made out of painted resin). Each of those lanterns contains a very small incandescent bulb, so when you dim those the colour gets very warm and orange. But then we have other [LED] fixtures in that environment and they can be dimmed right down but their colour doesn’t change, so you can keep a very dim but pure light point and that makes the warm stuff read warmer. It’s all about showing the eye where the light is. LEDs just have that purity of colour which doesn’t change with intensity.

And the other thing I wanted to say is the main difference is the sheer number of units we’re shooting on. We typically run between 40 and 50 units, and I’m having to be across all of those in terms of how the film looks. So I’m personally hands-on lighting a lot of those but I can’t do all of them. I have a couple of other guys who help me out and they work to my brief so that it looks like one person did it.

It is a huge, very busy environment in a very large stage with a lot of people running around. I think people’s impression of animation is a very ponderous, dull thing but actually, although it takes a long time, they’re working as quickly as they can. And they’re all working on their own.

What type of personality do you think you need to work in stop motion? There’s a stereotype that you must have to be very patient, but the reality is quite different?

I think the idea of “patience” is... I don’t even know where that comes from. That is what we call one of the “top five questions”. That, along with “tell us what is one of the most difficult things you had to do on the film” and “what is Wes Anderson like?”.

I don’t know what anyone’s being patient about, really. Where’s the patience? An animator is animating. He (or she) is working as fast as he possibly can, doing a very complicated performance through the medium of a puppet. So he is undergoing a degree of concentration it would be impossible to imagine and around him sets are being built, painted, lit, set up.

In all respects it is exactly like a live action department—it’s very busy, there is no downtime. So this concept of patience is entirely erroneous. What you actually need is stamina. Not patience. Because this is five or six days a week, 60-hour weeks for two years. And it’s intensely busy. Because of the length of time it takes to shoot, we’re in a rolling process of pre-production even when we’re in production. People are constantly losing their temper and constantly screaming and running out of the studio. To think there’s some kind of monkish, trappist environment… [shakes head].

Which villain did you find more terrifying from the films you worked on? —Manny

They’re not that scary are they, because they’re puppets, but I guess the best villain is Feathers McGraw from The Wrong Trousers, because it’s a penguin and it never speaks, and yet it has a sense of menace to it that is so thorough. It hasn’t even got pupils! It does occasionally blink but it mostly just sits there and... looks. It’s amazing how well it works.

What is it about penguins in animation? There are so many… Surf’s Up. Madagascar. Pingu…

When stop motion films were first shot digitally, sensor noise was an issue that sometimes led to ‘crawling’ artefacts between frames. Has this been mitigated in newer camera hardware, or is it something you still need to watch out for? —Matthew

Do you know what? I read that question and I thought “I have no idea what you’re talking about!” I’m completely unaware of this as an issue. The only film I think that may have been an issue on was Corpse Bride. We did have issues with the 5D which was used as the default animation camera for about ten years. But those issues were to do with the chip heating up and causing fluctuations with the density and the contrast. But the camera I used for Isle of Dogs and also Aardman used for Early Man, which is the Canon 1D X, was pretty damn good. Pretty stable. So it’s kind of ironed out. I mean, you know, no camera on earth is designed to shoot stop-motion animation. I mean why would it be? So we’re always looking for the next camera.

I know that Pete Kozachik is an extreme fan of 30- to 40-second shutter speeds, which is frankly ludicrous. That may have resulted in excessive sensor noise, but that’s more to do with the shutter speed.

How do you handle having to start an insanely complex shot again after an error?

That’s a very interesting question and I’ll tell you why: because the only reason that we reshoot is if there’s an animation problem. Because nothing gets shot until everything is right. So everything is tested. The lighting, the motion control, set dressing, everything is run in front of the director to the point where they say yes, good to go.

The reason is: you can’t ask an animator to reshoot a shot if they’ve done nothing wrong because you’ve cocked it up. So only animation issues are reshot. And from that point of view, it doesn’t bother me in the least, because I just go in and make sure they’re good to go, and they just go again. It’s their loss of time, not my loss of time. They’re normally quite okay about it. Most animators don’t mind having a second go because it does give them the opportunity to improve.

If there’s a catastrophic tech error on the other hand… We did have a flood on Isle of Dogs. We had a massive hole in the roof and a torrential thunderstorm and we lost some stuff in that way. So that becomes an Act of God, a force majeure, and you just have to get on with it.

But also we do monitor what’s going on, so I tend to pop in and just make sure the animators are okay and do my daily rounds. If I see an animator has unwittingly missed a focus point or position because they hadn’t been concentrating, I would inform the first [assistant director] and say “we need to restart this shot”. But because of the critical mass of shooting on 40 to 50 units, if you have an issue, it’s not really an issue. It can be frustrating, that’s all.

What, if anything, do you miss about the 35mm Chicken Run and Curse of the Were-Rabbit days?

There are things I miss about 35mm days. The structure of the day is far more coherent when you’re shooting on film, because you start your day looking at the rushes, looking at the dailies, then you go into the edit suite and you look at that material cut in, and then you go to the studio floor and address what needs addressing. Whereas when shooting digitally, every time someone finishes a shot you all have to go and look at it, get them turned over, and so on.

There is also far less downtime for animators and bizarrely I think they suffer from that because the process of sitting down and discussing shots and comparing notes is over. The experience of sitting in a green room and getting into a conversation with two or three old silverbacks of the industry is gone really.

The other thing is it’s no quicker shooting digitally. We shot Chicken Run in 78 weeks and we shot Isle of Dogs in 86 weeks, so it actually took longer.

A problem you get with digital is you suddenly have far too much choice. We would do everything in-camera on film. We would use painted backdrops for skies. Everything would be shot into camera, and now of course you can just shoot green screen and decide what your background’s going to look like later.

You’re giving yourself way too much choice because you can. So the amount of creative decision-making is thrown to the end of the movie. That seems like liberation but in fact it’s just putting off what could otherwise be a perfectly reasonable decision. And I think living with what you’ve done isn’t a bad way of working.

And the other thing—which has nothing to do with the practicalities of shooting—which appals me, is that every time we do a movie you have to buy new cameras, because they wear out, so they have a life, and they always stop manufacturing the damn things.

Halfway through Isle of Dogs they stopped making the camera we were shooting on! We had 50 and we had to find another 30 and we had to scour the world for them because Canon was no longer manufacturing them.

Whereas at Aardman, I could take a camera off the shelf that was made in 1928 and I’d know that I was using a piece of 70- or 80-year-old technology that was just going to keep going. We did not lose a shot on Curse of the Were-Rabbit or Chicken Run to a camera problem.

We have had far more problems shooting on a 5D than we ever did on film. The sheer absurdity of the throwaway society and obsolescence leaves a bad taste in the mouth. That at the beginning of every movie you have to spend $300,000–400,000 on new cameras.

At the end all those cameras are [sold on] eBay. The sheer fact of having to put all those cameras on eBay is absurd.

The famous train-chase scene in The Wrong Trousers

Can you tell us any good stories about the train-chase scene in The Wrong Trousers? (Emma guesses it must be the most challenging scene you’ve ever worked on, and there’s no doubt it is one of the best action scenes in a film, ever.)

Ha! Do you know how long ago that was? My daughter Sally was born the second week of shooting The Wrong Trousers and she’s just had her 26th birthday. However, I can tell you exactly about the train chase because it was a lot of fun, that particular segment.

So what you have, of course, is you have this chase that appears to take place in an infinitely huge environment, because the train is moving. We did some crude math and decided the train would be moving at 50mph if it was scaled up. So we did some tests and it looked really slow. So we just kept going up and up and up. And in fact it’s now moving at about 200mph scale-to-scale.

It’s tiny, absolutely minute, the train. We devised this method for shooting where you never see both ends of the train at the same time, so it’s either being pushed or it’s being pulled. It’s attached to the camera, [which is] on a crane hanging over the set. And the camera either had a rod that was pushing or a thread that was pulling. There is no motion control at all.

Laid on the floor is a tape measure and a pointer pointing at the tape measure. We’d hit the camera button—it had a two-second exposure—and we’d push the train 10cm [3.9in] along the track. So it’s moving at 10cm a frame. That’s a lot of distance to cover. And as the train is pulled or pushed, its wheels naturally go around on the track, so it self-animates its own spinning wheels as it goes along.

And we had a set that was a sort of long living room. It was Wallace’s living room but stretched, so it was about five meters long. At one end there was this huge sofa and the camera would go along following the train and it would go behind the sofa and as soon as it moved we’d pick the sofa up and take it down the other end of the set and the camera would move around the sofa and the train would keep going again.

And then when the penguin flies through the air, we actually mounted a sheet of glass in front of the camera—a big sheet of glass so you could see the set through it—and then the penguin was animated across that sheet of glass from right to left. So it looked like it was flying through the air, but the camera was still moving—everything was moving at 10cm a frame—so that’s 2.4 meters per second on double-0 gauge (if you know anything about trains). If you scale that up you’re moving at a hell of a lick!

So the penguin is stuck to the sheet of glass each time he is moved?

He’s had his back sliced off him so he’s like half a penguin, a bas-relief, if you like.

Then there are two other bits on that sequence. (It’s a very big sequence, obviously, there’s a lot to tell!) One is when the train goes around the corner. So for that I built this tiny dolly, which was a wedge of timber with four furniture casters on it and a massive Mitchell camera mounted on top of it. The track went under the camera, and I actually knelt on the set and hand dollied it round the bend.

I thought “this is fantastic!”. But when we actually shot it, what I had completely neglected to register is that as you hit the button the shutter goes around and it completely obscures the eye-piece—so I did it blind, really.

And the other shot is where the camera goes under the table. I can’t actually remember how we did that. I think we had a table that just broke away. But it’s all in-camera. There are no special effects at all.

We had a crew of six on that film. And only 150 shots in the whole movie. It’s amazing. The camera just sits there and watches what’s going on. It doesn’t cut, cut, cut. The camera sits there and you watch the whole sequence of penguin looking up at museum and all the other scenes.

Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs

Did you have a favorite moment on Isle of Dogs?

[Laughing] The last day! There are certain bits of Isle of Dogs that I greatly enjoyed bringing to the screen, but overall it was a slog. Working with a director who is an auteur gives you far less scope to exercise your own creative imagination, so you become reactive rather than proactive. That can be frustrating. That isn’t saying that the film isn’t fabulous and everyone will love it, but in terms of saying I loved that and I did that, it isn’t really my work. It’s something that I “enabled”, if you will.

There are some things that give you a degree of satisfaction. The problem with these movies is they are vast machines that roll on, so the intense personal satisfaction that I used to derive from shooting stuff like The Wrong Trousers is kinda lacking, because it’s such a huge thing.

I had a lot of fun shooting ParaNorman. By my own admission, I think I made a really, really good job of it and I think it looks fantastic. I enjoyed the directors, I enjoyed working at Laika. It was great.

What are five films you love for their cinematography?

I love Conrad Hall so I would always have Road to Perdition, his last movie, which I think is absolutely stunning. The beauty of shooting that film, dying and then getting a posthumous Academy Award is fantastic.

Seamus McGarvey is a great talent and I think Atonement is a beautiful looking film.

Casablanca is absolutely beautiful in black and white. That’s an astonishing looking movie. God, absolutely stunning.

I just think the standard of cinematography is so high at the moment. Production values just generally are so much better than they were 20 years ago—you can see a lot of bad movies but they’re very rarely badly shot.

The latest Blade Runner is fantastic. I’m so glad Roger [Deakins] won an award for that. Revolutionary Road, he did a fantastic job on that as well.

Any women cinematographers you have an eye on?

I realise that’s a prod, but Mudbound is a very handsome looking movie. I think [Rachel Morrison] did a fantastic job on Mudbound. Ask me in another ten years and I’m sure I’ll have many more names.

Did you ever meet Roger Deakins?

No, never. I met Jack Cardiff a couple of times, in his 90s. He was very twinkly. He’s a very naughty man—I think he had sex with nearly every leading woman that he worked with, which given that he is about five foot four is astonishing. He wrote a fantastic book called Magic Hour which has some absolutely awesome anecdotes in it. It’s well worth a read.

Could you have imagined in your wildest dreams that you’d spend a quarter of a century working in this field?

My wildest dreams? Like some hideous nightmare! I mean, “no” is the answer. I think I’ve always kind of felt that I would be getting out of it at some point. You very rapidly become pigeonholed in this business. Because it’s what I do, it’s what I get asked to do. People are ludicrously conservative about this.

A case in point is Loving Vincent. The reason I got that job was because I knew about animation. But I actually shot a 90-minute, single-camera, live-action movie with a dolly, cranes, the works, in 16 days, which is pretty good going for a 90-minute movie. Then someone took it away and whilst I was shooting Isle of Dogs they painted all over it!

But isn’t it weird that I got the job because I knew about animation? That’s what the business is like—a crazy, slightly blinkered view. But all my films get seen by a lot of people. They’re proper big movies, they go all over the world.

What memories spring to mind when you think about Another Country all these years later? It must feel like another life.

Ha! 35 years later. The thing about that movie is that’s kind of what made me do what I do today. I didn’t really know anything about films until I did that movie, and I became very friendly with the camera crew [director of photography Peter Biziou, who later won an Academy Award for Mississippi Burning, and camera operator David Garfath, who also worked on The Empire Strikes Back]. I was really interested in it.

At secondary school I had done my exams in physics, biology and chemistry so I had a technical knowledge. I absolutely adored acting. I really, really, really enjoyed acting, but it just never happened for me. I had at one point to make a decision about whether I was going to live in a tiny flat by the seaside and do a couple of commercials and a pantomime every year and end up in a blazer and cravat, or do something that would make me a living. So I did spend a couple of schizophrenic years being a clapper loader and an actor, then I went to film school.

But my memories of that film are very intense and very fond. I mean, that was a real eye-opener for me. I’d never been in that environment before, surrounded by those sorts of people doing that job. It was deeply affecting. I think it damaged me for about five years. Although it was only a few weeks of my life, I then had to go back and finish my degree and the phone never rang. Everyone was interested in Rupert [Everett] and Colin [Firth], or Cary [Elwes]. Although only Colin really became a superstar.

In hindsight I’d have got myself a publicity agent and gone out there and sold myself. So I do this now. I lead a life of anonymity.

Look at an animated feature: in terms of awards, all it’ll be up for is best animated feature. The Annies don’t ever have a category for cinematography, and they have a category for everything, even an award for the floor sweeper! I wrote to them and asked them in the nicest possible way, why don’t you have a category for cinematography? And they went, ‘Oh it’s far too expensive to introduce new categories’. Then a year later they introduced two new categories. It’s absolutely absurd. We go very unconsidered in this world. Trying to gain membership of any professional organisation is impossible.

I’ve shot six movies and every one has been nominated or won an Academy Award. And I’ve shot short movies that have won or been nominated. They just go, ‘Yeah, it’s animation though isn’t it’.

Well, what keeps getting you up in the morning, in terms of what you do?What do you think is the role of storytellers such as yourself and the teams you work with in our society?

Stories are what separate us from the beasts. We are the only animal capable of projecting abstract thoughts into the future or into the past and drawing analogies in that way. I think it’s what makes us human: the ability to tell stories. There’s no anything without story. People ask me what makes a great movie and I go “the script”.

People love to watch people acting stuff out. It’s peculiar. It’s not something that any other animal does. It’s very deep within us, this need to tell stories. In fact they’ve now decided that the way these neolithic cave illustrations have been structured, with animals with multiple legs, is because when they were lit by candlelight it gave the impression of running. As the candlelight flickered, these things galloped. It’s all about story.

Finally, tell us why we ought to visit Bristol, the home of Aardman Animation?

Why would one visit Bristol?! Well, it has a thriving arts and animation scene. It’s a little bit laid-back. It’s rather like Portland in that respect. If you were in the UK and you wanted a day out I’m sure it’s right up there with Bath. It’s next door to Bath so you could probably do both in a weekend. But the thing about Bristol is it’s so nice, it’s so comfortable, that people used to go there and never leave.

I’ve experienced this many times because when I was crewing up Fantastic Mr. Fox—and indeed Isle of Dogs—I asked some of my old crew from Aardman to come and work with me. And they were all incredibly reluctant and it’s only 110 miles away! They were happier to be unemployed in Bristol than come to London, which terrifies them because there’s too many people there. Portland is where young people to go to retire and Bristol is the graveyard of ambition.

Best garden shredder 2021: rid your yard of branches, twigs and leaves

With this year’s dead bits hacked out, your garden is now trimmed and spruced in readiness for next spring. But what’ll you do with all those cuttings? Or perhaps you have a body to dispose of? Either way, that’s where the best garden shredders come in.

To assist you, we’ve called in cluster of well-received domestic models and put them through their paces using a variety of pruned vegetation. And it’s okay; we were joking about disposing of bodies. These domestic machines are nowhere near powerful enough for that.

As we do when we’re rating any sort of garden tool or piece of machinery, such as the best pressure washers, best cordless lawn mowers or best garden tools, we’ve also supplied some buying advice below on what you should be looking out for in a garden shredder. This will help you find the right product for your needs.

What is the best garden shredder?

All nine of the models tested are good machines but our top choice is the quiet and keenly-priced Cobra QS2500, a model that is very similar in both design and function to the doggedly determined Bosch AXT 25 TC but quite a bit cheaper.

If you’re on an even tighter budget, the Einhell GC-KS 2540 is surprisingly effective even if it does scream like a banshee.

The petrol-powered Titan 15HP Petrol Chipper Shredder Mulcher, the mid-priced Bosch AXT RAPID 2200, the tall-standing Stihl GHE 355 and chunky Makita UD2500 all have their charms, too.

1. Cobra QS2500

The best garden shredder for value and performance

Straight to the one spot with a silver bullet, the Cobra QS2500 is our new favourite garden shredder for performance, low noise level and price. Similar in both design and function to our former number one, the popular Bosch AXT 25 TC, this shredder impresses in a number of ways but mostly price, which is way below that of the Bosch.

This writer has used the Cobra QS2500 on a number of occasions and it has excelled every time. On at least two occasions I fed it about 25 beech tree branches with full foliage one after another and it just kept on churning, crucially without making a racket in the process. This model accepts branches of up to 4cm in diameter but I just rammed in any size of branch that fitted the portal. At no time did I have to reach for the reverse button to free up a jam.

Being of the drum variety, the Cobra is exceptionally quiet in operation – in fact it makes less noise than a cordless lawnmower. Its drum simply churns continuously, chucking the remnants of bushes and trees into its ample 50-litre collection box.

Granted, the fully-leafed beech branches I tested it with remained in one mangled piece as opposed to being completely cut all the way through, but that didn’t bother me because I wasn’t considering using the mulched results as garden fertiliser. Instead I simply poured the contents into my garden-waste bin.

If you’re after a top-performing garden shredder that is almost as quiet as a field mouse while being relatively cheap to buy, then this one comes highly recommended.

2. Bosch AXT 25 TC

The best high-end garden shredder

Bosch shredders dominate the market and with good reason. They’re very well built, efficient and generally reliable. Rather like an enormous, masticating juicer, this quiet, electric-powered 2,500 watt turbine model uses a bladed drum that spins relatively slowly under massive torque, trapping, crushing and cutting branches up to 45mm in diameter against a solid plate.

This model handles both wood and leafy material as was amply demonstrated when I fed it half a fig tree, green fruit and all. It chopped and crushed the whole thing into tiny pieces and deposited them into the box below ready for easy disposal in the garden bin or compost heap – some shredding aficionados will even spread the nutritious remains over flowerbeds.

Rather considerately of Bosch, this heavyweight model comes ready-built with the wheels already attached, so all you need to do is clip in the top hopper, ensure the 53-litre collection box is properly engaged, switch it on and shred. The top of the chute has a wider access than others in this roundup and that makes it generally easier to stuff in branches of a more unwieldy nature, while the included tamper helps release mutinous vegetation.

Granted, it’s very top-heavy and quite tricky to move around the garden – the wheels aren’t really wide enough apart – but at least it splits in two for easier storage.

If you have a mixture of both woody and leafy materials, this Bosch is your best bet. It justifies its slightly higher price by being extremely effective, easy to use and quiet enough to not disturb the neighbours.

3. Einhell Electric Shredder GC-KS 2540

An efficient budget-priced option for seasonal use

You’re not going to get Bosch-like build quality at this price but what you will get is an extremely efficient multi-talented shredder that mulches both woody and leafy material in a thrice. Just be sure to keep tree branches below the 45mm maximum diameter and snip off any extraneous branches or they won’t fit through the feeder portal.

The 2,500-watt Einhell uses a pair of fast spinning blade to cut through vegetation but larger pieces of hardwood and too many leaves will likely block the chute which means reaching for the included tamper. It’s quite a scary machine, mind, since it literally slices through cuttings and branches in quite a violent and exceedingly noisy manner (thank heavens the blades are well out of ’arm’s way). Thankfully, a motor circuit breaker switch cuts in to protect it from overloading.

The Einhell performed surprisingly well when fed a pile of long, thick rose branches, chopping the whole lot up into small 5mm pieces with only the occasional hiccup. Although it’s equipped with a discharge funnel, you will need to place a sheet of tarpaulin or a large plastic trug (B&Q do an excellent range, btw) underneath the chute to catch all the clippings.

If you only do occasional pruning and don’t require the brute force of a Bosch or Titan, then this is a good budget-priced starting point. It’s light enough to easily wheel around the garden, small enough for shed storage and it performed better than some of the more expensive competition.

4. Bosch AXT Rapid 2200

Another, cheaper Bosch classic

If you can’t afford the all-conquering Bosch AXT 25 TC, give this cheaper but equally useful alternative a whirl. It’s a lot more mobile for start though you will need a box, tarpaulin or garden trug (one of those handy round soft plastic garden tidies that garden centres sell) underneath it to collect the ejected detritus.

The Rapid 2200 uses tough laser-cut blades to slice through vegetation (preferably of the harder, drier variety) in a thrice. It’ll happily swallow branches up to 40mm in diameter though you may need to trim a few stems in order to feed those branches of a more ungainly persuasion into the hopper.

This model is quite reminiscent of the much cheaper B&Q model we’re quite smitten with above. But, given it’s a Bosch with a whopping 2200 watt motor attached, we (perhaps ill advisedly) assume it will last quite a bit longer. But don’t take our word for it.

This Amazon exclusive garden shredder offers big shredding power and a large collection bin. It does so, too, for a very firmly mid-tier price point as well, meaning it can be bagged for much less than some other premium models.

With 3000W of cutting power at your disposal with the Ryobi RSH3045U 3000W Silent Impact Shredder, you’ve got enough grunt to go through all but the largest of garden detritus, with two reversible, hardened steel blades designed to shred branches, brambles, and shrubs to a fine mulch.

The mulch ends up in the collection bin, which as aforementioned is large, and there is a safety plunger that pushes any material fed into the machine into the its blades, thereby allowing the user’s fingers to stay well clear. A strong safety feature if ever we saw one.

The only real down side of this shredder is how it looks, which is not particularly premium, as too the fact that it certainly isn’t “silent”. You won’t need ear defenders or anything, but including silent in the name is definitely a bit cheeky.

Overall, though, a garden shredder that delivers plenty of bang for you buck.

6. Stihl GHE 355

Great multi-functional model for all garden materials

Got a garden with a mixture of hard-wooded trees, firs, shrubs and rubbery plants? Step tight this way because this tall-standing, multi-functional model does the lot by dint of a unique ‘blade rotation reversal system’ that deals with both hard and soft materials.

For leaves, twigs and palm fronds, flick the switch on the front and shove some greenery into the large opening. The blades spin at high speed ripping everything to shreds. Likewise, when it comes to the harder stuff, turn the knob to the branch setting, feed in anything up to 35mm in diameter and out comes a pile of tiny wood chippings ready for the compost heap, the borders or the green wheelie bin.

This model doesn’t come with a collection box though it does at least feature a guard hood. I’d advise placing a garden tarpaulin underneath the exit chute so you don’t end up with a garden full of chippings and mulched leaves.

The Stihl GHE 355 is an extremely efficient shredder-cum-chipper but it costs over £100 more than the Bosch and, at 1.41 metres, is taller and a whole lot louder. But, hey, it’s a Stihl so you can safely expect it to shred till the cows come home.

7. Dirty Pro Tools Garden Shredder

A lot of shredding power for very little money

Dirty Pro Tools probably had a massive laugh after they came up with their name, but it is now dawning on them that they are stuck with it forever.

Never mind, their ‘dirty’ garden shredder may or may not be ‘pro’ but it is equipped with a powerful 2,500 watt engine that should be able to shred most things short of a crowbar.

Users queue up to applaud the way this cheap ’n’ chunky chaff chewer gulps down branches up to 40cm in diameter and then farts them out into a large 50-litre box as little wooden chips.

Ironically, the more seemingly lightweight likes of leaves can cause it to choke, splutter and come to a halt, so stick to the heavy stuff. You can clear blockages easily enough by unscrewing a knob and gaining access to the blades. I’d advise doing this with the machine switched off, but it’s a free country.

As is the case with most shredders, you’ll save a lot of hassle by just getting the ol’ leaf blower out, assembling them in a neat pile, then bagging them up.

At this price you’re not going to be getting the best quality components and, sure enough, one common online complaint with this shredder is that its blades blunt quickly. On the other hand (which I thankfully still have), to get something that shreds as well as this for a shade over £100 is quite a rare treat.

8. Makita UD2500

This smart-looking electric model is about same size and weight as the Bosch and just as well built, though some assembly is required, including fitting the wheels.

However, it doesn’t tackle as many different materials as the Bosch and struggles with anything that has high moisture content like large leaves and soft springy branches. In other words it’s best suited to harder woods and larger branches without too much greenery.

I fed it the same type of rose branches that the cheap B&Q model made such light work of and it jammed up a few times requiring me to hit the reverse button to free up some of the leafy congestion.

Also, it doesn’t come with a tamper which would have felt somewhat safer than using a stick to coax in some of the more rebellious stuff. It eventually swallowed the lot but closer inspection of the huge 67-litre collection bin revealed that it had simply crushed rather than cut the branches. And that meant I wasn’t able to spread the remnants over the flowerbeds.

However, it made a much better fist of dealing with a couple of 30mm hardwood branches – like the Bosch and B&Q, it accepts diameters of up to 45mm – once I’d cut off a few gnarly twigs to get the branch through the small hopper opening.

It was pretty quiet, too, which seemed to please the neighbours.

The Makita’s price falls somewhere between the Bosch and B&Q. It’s a Which? Best Buy but it loses a bit of ground for me due to its relative lack of versatility.

An altogether more serious proposition, this costly, petrol-driven brute annihilates anything up to 75mm in diameter. We’re talking proper tree branches here, the kind of stuff other domestic shredders fear.

If you own your own forest, or at least have a very large garden with loads of trees and shrubs, this could well be the shredder for you.

Just be sure you’re fit enough and have a decent sized outhouse or shed to store it in because, despite having wheels, the machine weighs 103kgs and the feed hopper is about head height. Also, it spits everything directly on to the ground so your best bet is to use a tarpaulin to collect all the chippings or you’ll make a right old mess of the lawn.

The Titan comes with two main portals. The top chute accommodates leaves and twigs up to 10mm and uses a ‘flail arm’ system to mulch them into tiny fragments.

Look to the side and there’s a circular portal for branches up to 75mm diameter: simply shove in a branch and out comes a pile of wood chippings of near sawdust consistency. Unfortunately, the side chute only accepts straight branches so some sawing will inevitably be required.

The downside to all this is that the Titan is huge, heavy, ugly and noisy and it uses an electric-start 15hp four-stroke engine that will, at times, require some TLC. If you can stand the racket – and your closest neighbours are either a long way away, or profoundly deaf – then this beaver of the shredding community is right up your garden path.

How to buy the best garden shredder for you

It’s one thing hacking away at your overgrown hedges, trees and shrubbery but another when you’re then faced with an unwieldy pile of branches, twigs, leaves and other garden detritus that somehow needs to be disposed of. You could spend ages snipping all the twigs and branches to a manageable size for disposal in the green waste bin or at your local council dump. Or you could invest in the best garden shredder.

Let’s cut to the chase. These domestic shredders aren’t like those machines the council uses when pruning trees in the street, or like the one Peter Stormare feeds Steve Buscemi into in that memorable scene from Fargo.

Most of the models here won’t handle anything thicker than 45mm in diameter so you can forget stuffing in a tree trunk. You will also need to snip off stiff twigs and large stubby bits or the branch simply won’t fit through the hopper’s opening slot.

Think hard about whether you really need a shredder in the first place and whether you have room. Many people will likely only use it once a year and the rest of the time you’ll need somewhere to store it.

There are two main types of shredder: impact and drum. Impact shredders use sharp, fast-spinning blades to cut into garden waste and can process a wider variety of materials, including most hard wood branches and fresh, moist cuttings and leaves. However, they are extremely noisy and their blades will eventually blunt if used excessively. They can also jam up if asked to process too much at a time.

Drum (or quiet) shredders tend to crush the material using a slow rotating, bladed wheel that traps plant matter against a solid plate before cutting it into little pieces. Drum shredders make far less noise but aren’t considered as effective at dealing with leafy materials.

Most shredders are equipped with a reverse switch to release trapped vegetation (it happens a lot) and some are equipped with a handy tamper to help force undisciplined branches into the portal of death.

Be careful how you insert branches as they jiggle about violently while they’re being swallowed. If it’s a thorn-covered branch and you’re holding on to it, lacerations are a real risk. You’re advised to wear gloves and goggles or sunglasses. A stylish, hi-viz jacket is optional.

There was this one time in 2013 when I was still a student in Japan and I flew from Tokyo to another city and I didn’t have much money and I didn’t book any hotel room because I thought I’d sleep in my sitting position on a seat at the airport because my family would arrive the next morning anyway. I didn’t know that the airport wouldn’t be opened for 24 hours. (Fuck) Like others who had the same plan as me, we were all told by the security to get out of the airport. It was midnight and it was so cold, dark and disturbingly quiet outside. I wouldn’t be surprised if some zombies showed up. I stayed outside for 2 hours and it was freezing.

And all I could think about was; how the fuck do homeless people survive on the streets? I had little money and nowhere to go and didn’t know what to do. Luckily, a Vietnam guy who originally was gonna sleep inside the airport saw me and told me that there was a 24 hour family restaurant nearby. We went there with a Taiwanese girl who couldn’t speak English and Japanese well (and I can’t speak Chinese). She came from Taiwan to see a concert of her favourite Japanese band. The whole thing was unexpected but I got to experience the kindness of strangers at the same time. The 3 of us ordered something to eat and we ended up talking and hanging out until morning. Then after the airport is opened again, we all went our separate ways. From then on, I kinda want to do something big for the homeless (except giving them CPR because I don’t know how)

That alone was bold af. Now that I understand what it feels like to put my work and my youtube videos out there, I know how “worrying about people’s responses/reactions and being afraid of criticism” from the internet feels like. And so I think what Halsey did was really bold and inspiring. I’m someone who is not shy and compared to most people around me, I am confident. I can go up to a stranger and ask for their phone number for my friends. I did that when I was a student living in Tokyo and I went to Tokyo alone to study and at that time I didn’t know anybody in Japan and I could barely speak their language. But doing that is so much easier than building confidence to start a youtube channel. At first I was so friggin’ nervous. My palms were all sweaty. My confidence went out of the window and I was so worried and afraid. I think we all know how mean people can be on the internet. Then last night I watched one of Halsey’s old interviews. She just does her thing so confidently and without hesitation (gender swapping Romeo and Juliet for her album) while being in the limelight at the same time. It’s like she’s so focused on her work that she has no room at all for fears even though she’s so young. I learned something meaningful and useful and I got really inspired. I admire her because she has wisdom to share. Wisdom that can be used in the real world. And she inspires me to focus on my work, not my fears.

what’s your favourite flower/tree/plant? I love nature wow. My favorite tree is definitely a Weeping Cherry Tree or Willow. My favorite flowers are sunflowers and roses! Plants in general, I just really love cacti? It’s a product of having family I adore in Arizona haha
