The fall semester of my Junior year of college is upon me, and it will probably be the most hectic and busy semester I’ll ever go through.
First of all, I am a research assistant in two labs, which I honestly don’t think will be… terrible… but it ultimately depends on my responsibilities. One of the labs I’m a part of this semester is one I was a part of last spring semester, so I already know what I have to do. From what I’ve heard, we’re just going to have some post-grad workshops and info sessions, and I’ll *maybe* get the chance to run some experiments. I’m a psych major btw. So if this is anything like last semester, it will probably be less stressful than it sounds. The second one I am in is one I got from cold emailing a professor that runs a lab closer to what I want to study in grad school (Social Psychology), and I’m pretty excited about it! However, I have no idea what to expect. I hope there will be some assignments that involve reading research papers; it’s usually pretty fun to see whats going on in the field of academia (especially when I have no idea what the hell they are talking about).
I am also going to be a TA this semester for Statistics in Psychology, which was a class I did pretty well in for the most part. I’m kinda excited, but also nervous because I’m not the best at tutoring and explaining how to do stuff. I just kinda… do it, and I do what makes logical sense in my brain. The thing is, when I try to help someone in, I try to make the concept make sense through my own logical point of view, which normally ends in me spewing a bunch of nonsense that makes sense to me, but not the other person. I feel like I’m being a bit harsh on myself though, as my friends have told me that I’m a good teacher and that I explain things well. Hopefully that manifests in being a TA :P but I also have to do things like grade papers and partake in an undergraduate teaching class (which is supposedly easy).
Of course, I have all of my actual course work, which I surprisingly haven’t mentioned just yet in a post all about my future prospects for this semester. I think I picked a lot of good classes, but they also seem a bit heavy on studying though. As long as I don’t have to take any terrible online tests, I should be fine. My beef with online exams will never be rivaled.
Lastly, I plan on studying abroad for the next semester! While this seems like a really fun thing to look forward to, what comes with it is applying to 10 quintillion scholarships with the hope that I don’t have to worry about going bankrupt while abroad. And that means I have to write 10 quintillion essays. Hooray.
I think I’ll be fine though. All of this will be super duper worth it in the long run, and I won’t regret any of it. I just need to be productive, which is much easier said than done unfortunately.

The curve of your eyes
Pairing: college student!Yunho x girl!reader

⚠️Warnings: some dirty talk, if we can even call it that
A/N: here's a short fic for you <33 I wasn't at the peak of my inspiration (as you can see), but I had this idea and needed to write it down... hope you like it <33

«As you probably already know, I hope,» Mr. Hwang said, «right in front of us, we can see one of Canova's most brilliant sculptures: Psyche revived by Cupid's Kiss.»
As your Art History professor was talking, every student grabbed their phones to take as many pictures as they could, and so did you. That masterpiece was particularly dear to you because it represented one of your favorite stories from Ancient Roman mythology. You could say you knew everything about it, and that's another reason why you chose that sculpture – and Neoclassicism, as the main topic for your presentation.
«Does any of you know its original Italian name, too?» the professor asked, and everyone went quiet. Of course, you knew the original name and were ready to raise your hand and answer, but someone was faster.
«Amore e Psiche. It means 'Love and Psyche'.»
«Well done, Yunho. As I was saying...»
You didn't listen to the following explanation – not that you needed to – too focused on glaring at the tall boy standing a few feet away from you. He noticed you were looking at him with a frown and gave you a wry smile like he always did when he managed to steal your thunder whenever your professor asked some questions. Your rivalry was known amongst your entire faculty, and most of the students were more interested in your daily debates in class than the actual lectures.
When Mr. Hwang had to choose his best students to take on a sponsored trip to Paris, you two were the first ones on his list. Actually, you were the first one, but Yunho kept saying it was only because your name came before his, following the alphabetical order.
As if.
However, only two days had passed since your arrival in France, and you had already declared war on each other, using every opportunity to show off your Art History knowledge.
«Before we move on, does anyone happen to know what's the novel containing the myth that inspired this masterpiece?»
All the students looked around confused, and even Yunho seemed to be struggling to remember the title. But you knew it.
«It's Lucius Apuleius' Metamorphoses, also known as The Golden Ass.»
The professor looked extremely satisfied with your answer, and your gaze went to Yunho, who rolled his eyes at the sight of your proud smirk.
«I guess we're even now,» the tall boy said while Mr. Hwang led everyone to another hall of the museum.
«No, we aren't.»
«Why not? We answered one question each,» he asked you, raising an eyebrow.
«We did, but with a slight difference,» you said. «I knew your answer, but you didn't know mine.»
«Tsk, whatever. It doesn't matter: Latin novelists have nothing to do with Art History,» he replied, apparently annoyed.
«You're saying this only because you don't wanna admit I always win, and I'm better than you.» You looked at him with challenging eyes.
«Oh, are you?»
You nodded.
Yunho looked around to make sure everyone's attention was on the professor, then got closer to you, towering over your body.
«Yeah, you're right: you're better than me,» he whispered, his breath on your neck making you shiver. «Above all, when you're lying on my bed with my cock buried deep inside you, and you're all tearful, moaning my name and begging me to make you cum.»
He grabbed your chin and made you look at him straight in the eyes. «Oh, you're so much better.»
«I-I don't think this is the... the right time and place t-to say such things,» you managed to reply, stuttering.
«Why not? Is it because it makes you wish I'd be fucking you right now, but we can't?» he asked in a mocking tone, and you shook your head, not even able to utter a proper answer.
«Liar,» he said, finally letting go of your chin. «I'll come to your room tonight, and we'll see who will win.»
«As if you don't already know that.» You rolled your eyes and crossed your arms.
«Yes, baby, I do,» he replied. «I know you always let me win.»

(English)
The curve of your eyes encircles my heart,
a circle of dance and gentleness,
halo of time, safe nocturnal cradle,
and if I can't remember all that I lived,
it's because your eyes didn't always see me.
Leaves of day and foam of dew,
reeds of wind, perfumed smiles,
wings covering the world in light,
ships loaded with sky and sea,
hunters of sounds and source of colors,
Scents hatched from a clutch of dawns
still lying on the straw of stars,
just as the day depends on innocence,
the whole world depends on your pure eyes,
and all my blood flows in their gazes.

To Maybach -- Anon 2023 again. Honestly, my other major option is Brown (and Penn, but that's out by now) and I'm concerned that I'd be sacrificing happiness if I choose Pton. "Happy" is a part of the Brown brand, whereas "ahhhhh" seems to be a part of Pton's. I want the name and the opportunities Pton would afford me. I suppose that's not a question, but how would you respond? Do you understand what I mean? Is it so awful to pick Pton 4 name/opportunity (in addition to the other stuff)
Sorry for the delay everyone, I just got caught up in a lot of obligations. Due to multiple popular demands from both pre-frosh and current students, I decided to structure my Brown and Princeton story in the following manner. In the first section, I’ll give my background context prior to starting college and my feelings throughout the years on the subject. In the second section, I’ll specifically address the above question in more detail with my many thoughts on key distinctions between the two schools. I think the combination will serve the purposes of everyone quite nicely. Lastly, if any pre-frosh ever want to talk to me, feel free to reach out and ask for my contact information. Or even better yet lol, I just remembered that PREVIEW started, so I guess it might be easier to just talk in person to me. I actually don’t even have class tomorrow haha. I just think that talking is sometimes easier than writing and also in these responses sometimes I have to speculate. For example, I can pretty safely state that if a pre-frosh is almost certain of being a pre-med, Brown is probably going to be a much less stressful experience, but I have no idea if this applies to you beforehand.
So anyway, even though it was four years ago, I still remember it like it was yesterday. Boy time flies. I was not the most studios or stand-out HS student. I wasn’t the valedictorian or salutatorian of a rather small school far away from major cities. While some Princetonian HS students spent summer doing lab research at universities, I spent mine goofing off with friends and traveling. We used to actually have a bonfire at the end of the school year and burned stacks of our HW up to 4 feet high lol. When it came to applying to college, I did not actually even again acceptance to NYU or BC lol even though my stats were more than up to par. I guess maybe they were concerned that I wouldn’t be a very hard-working student. Luckily, I am very fortunate that despite coming from an extremely educated family (grandfather and mom went to Columbia, Dad went to Berkeley, etc.), my parents never put that much pressure on me. So as you can imagine, I was super excited when I heard that I got into Princeton, Brown, Cornell, and some other schools. For a period of time, I was actually getting ready to go to Brown. My SO at the time had committed to URI and I was psyched by the super expressive culture of Brown. Students prided themselves on being true to themselves and also took full advantage of freedom with responsibility. The location was close enough to NYC and some kids from my HS were already there. I always hated excessive structure and authority growing up and the prospect of 70%’s A’s granted, no +/I’s, and pass/failing anything was totally alluring! On a side note, I always laugh when they say that people don’t abuse pass/fail and use it only like 10-15% of the time. Well, maybe that’s because they’re already handing out A’s like it’s water and all A-’s become A’s haha. But anyway, I was psyched. Who wouldn’t want to live at camp Brown and take it easier than HS, but still be guaranteed a legit degree on your resume? However, after I visited Princeton, connected with a large number of alumni, and actually started putting real thought into my education, my perspectives slowly, but surely started to change. I think what I really underestimated was the power of the Princeton degree and how impressive our alumni network truly is. The people I met and still meet to this day are absolutely brilliant in several respects (e.g. they aren’t just nerds in one subject) and many are focused on maximizing their impact and allocation of influence in this world. The alumni donation rate is nothing short of incredible and the chance to be part of this network was alluring. I remember meeting a guy actually who got waitlisted and was already attending Duke when he got the chance to go to Princeton. He lived every moment to the fullest with his academic pursuits, the social network of brilliant, but diverse persons, and solid career plans. Anyway, it just became more clear to me over time that while Princeton was rigorous, it’s academic qualities could be much more intimate and engaged than Brown and the intellectual horsepower of its students (mostly) created truly incredible and impactful people. Jeez lol I forget sometimes how many alumni we have on the SC, in politics, business, arts, etc. At Brown, all they do is gush over Emma Watson in an almost cult-like way (sarcasm). But anyway, I was getting pushed as you can imagine, but I was still worried as I wasn’t the best HS student and grade deflation had literally only ended the year before. But eventually, the offer was just too good to pass up. Once you become a Princeton student, your life truly does change and people will treat you give you credit solely based on this fact (whether it’s right or wrong is another story). I remember before I even committed, I was hanging out at the Princeton Club in New York and a few days later some of the guys (who literally knew me for like a few days), invited me out and basically paid of lunch at Smith and Wollensky and lauded me on my “accomplishments” lol and how they could always be resources to bolster a Princetonian. Pretty soon after I committed.
As for answering your specific question, I’m already seeing red flags. Whenever you choose a school for the name, that’s setting yourself up for a bad time. Yes, our opportunities are better. Look at the difference in endowments lol. It’s like that for a reason even though they have way more students and more grad schools. It’s also reflected as well in our post-graduation salary averages. Brown is more creative with RISD and it’s curriculum, but that doesn’t always equal more opportunities. Princeton has the most power and resources of any university on a per-student basis and gives us an incredibly powerful brand and network. That said, you should probably explore why you want to go to Princeton other than the name and brand. One of the miserable people I know picked Princeton over another school because it was the “Best” school she got into and that’s just not fun when you didn’t research enough beforehand. By contrast, I know someone who turned down Harvard for a small liberal arts school in the middle of nowhere and she had an amazing time. If you feel like and click with Brown’s social scene, that’s another reason for not going to Princeton. Academically, Princeton is better for people who want rigor and want to truly maximize their learning in a short period of time and be around amazing minds. Our depth is much better than Brown’s and it shows with how strong our students are in critical thinking skills both inside and outside of their majors. However, there is a downside to this. For example, if you want to major in physics at Princeton, you better adapt fast or be damn good at it. You can’t just “love” physics and be relatively bad at it (compared to your peers) to succeed here because we teach you to be the best students possible from professors who literally wrote your book. At Brown, sure you don’t learn as much or go as deep, but you can major in almost anything because you just aren’t held to the same standards. So there’s a tradeoff. If I majored in Brown’s business program, let me just say that I would not NEARLY be perceived by others to be so intelligent (even though I’m not lol). I know the kids in the degree, it’s not like they are dumb, but jeez lol is it a joke a bunch of the time. Relating sociology to business for example on the surface can seem like a good idea that teaches people until you actually see what they’re writing and working on. I would probably have a 4.0 without working as hard too. And I don’t mean this to mean I’m like super smart or anything. It’s just not comparable to Princeton. However, I am super blessed and thankful that I did take Economics here seriously. The kinds of critical thinking skills and the ability to analytically dissect complex multi-faceted problems that I have developed serve me very well and I feel so rewarded. I literally got a position at a hedge fund with no experience at all because the interviewer liked how I wrote a research paper on guns an applied rigorous statistical analysis in many novel ways to answer new questions. This is no different in many ways than using public information using novel techniques to find value where nobody else sees it. But overall, I think that I’m feeling Brown for you unless you are willing to work harder here for greater depth of learning. I just want to say too though that despite me working hard, I still don’t pull-allnighters almost ever and I still have achieved very high grades. You don’t have to be a genius to do well here. Take it from me. I had piss-poor test scores (by Princeton standards) and was not a valedictorian, but if you are strategic and work reasonably hard and are disciplined, the work is more than doable. I don’t want to brag because I think it promotes bad culture, but you ought to know that a student like me can succeed academically and perform at the top of their class without working in the library all the time. So you should really evaluate what kind of learning experience you want and where you will be most likely to be happy and healthy. Some people just want a break after HS and don’t care about going super deep into their learning development. That’s totally fine, but then Brown is probably better (assuming you also like the culture). Some people would really abuse Brown’s system, not really learn, develop unhealthy and bad habits, and be kind of bored. In that case, Princeton is better. It really depends on you, but if all you see here for you is a name, you’re probably shooting yourself in the foot coming here.
Anyway hope that all helps. I can answer specifics if you have them too.
Edit. also I realized how long this all is and noticed that maybe some of you should just call me or I can connect you with people I know who love Brown lol. It’s sometimes harder to write these things and express everything properly compared to like a 30-minute dinner conservasation. Just putting it out there. I’m also exhausted lol from staying up until 4am the past few nights for this huge deal coming up. I did this tonight so that I wouldn’t mess up my sleep schedule any further and avoid taking a nap lol.

im also going through that growing phase the anon was talking about and for the longest time I thought something was wrong, that maybe I was dissociating with myself and losing my way but maybe I'm just changing. I dont know how to find myself again but I guess I need to give it time. How do I tell if I'm changing or dissociating? And thank you endlessly. Not just for your input on fandom and all that entails but because we can come to you with personal problems and you will still help. xoxo.
okay. This is a big question, and I have to add a warning here. I am not a psychiatrist or psychologist. I’ve had training in counseling in HS (as a peer counselor) college (as a resident advisor) and grad school (as a teacher.) I’ve done a lot of self study and am familiar with psychology and self help and other ways of understanding our minds and behaviors. I’ve lead workshops, talked people through things, attended intense conferences but only taken one psych class. I might be able to to tell when someone needs to go see a real psychiatrist, but I am not one. I mostly use my knowledge of psychology to help myself, to write realistic characters and to analyze fiction.
So when I got your question, the first thing I did was google. I got a lot of science/academic hits, but because of my training I could decode it enough to find the sites that were most helpful to me. My first question? What is dissociation and when does it become a problem? Because disorders start with behavior that is normal, but veers into a dysfunction that harms the person.
Q: What Is Dissociation?Dissociation is a disconnection between a person’s thoughts, memories, feelings, actions, or sense of who he or she is. This is a normal process that everyone has experienced. Examples of mild, common dissociation include daydreaming, highway hypnosis, or “getting lost” in a book or movie, all of which involve “losing touch” with awareness of one’s immediate surroundings.
Q: When Is Dissociation Helpful?During a traumatic experience such as an accident, disaster, or crime victimization, dissociation can help a person tolerate what might otherwise be too difficult to bear. In situations like these, a person may dissociate the memory of the place, circumstances, or feelings about of the overwhelming event, mentally escaping from the fear, pain, and horror. This may make it difficult to later remember the details of the experience, as reported by many disaster and accident survivors.
Q: What is a Dissociative Disorder?Tragically, ongoing traumatic conditions such as abuse, community violence, war, or painful medical procedures are not one-time events.  For people repeatedly exposed to these experiences, especially in childhood, dissociation is an extremely effective coping “skill.” However, it can become a double-edged sword. It can protect them from awareness of the pain in the short-run, but a person who dissociates often may find in the long-run his or her sense of personal history and identity is affected. For some people, dissociation is so frequent it results in serious pathology, relationship difficulties, and inability to function, especially when under stress. [X lots of info here on dissociative disorders but too much for this post.]
So you see here that dissociation has a large range, from completely harmless, like getting lost in tv show (The 100 anyone?) to developing multiple “personalities.” It doesn’t become a disorder until the long term effects make you dysfunctional in your life.
It sounds to me like what we’re talking about here is a dissociation somewhere between the normal everyday stuff, and something dysfunctional. I’m not 100% sure, but I’d guess duration of the symptoms might tell us if it counts as a mild disorder. When I researched PTSD, (back during 9/11) I learned that it doesn’t count as a disorder until the symptoms continue on for six months after the trauma. So technically, all the characters on the 100 were NOT suffering from ptsd, but from a NORMAL reaction to traumatic events. Who knew? (well I did, but the narrative conventions had us talking about it as a disorder. it’s an important discussion.)
So, it took a while to get here, but I wanted to make sure we understood what we’re talking about. I think this is what we’re looking at.
Something in your life has stopped working, or disappeared, or isn’t making you happy. It might be something that you have hung your identity on. “This is who I am.” Or something you’ve built your habits around. “This is how I fill my days.” Or something you’ve created as the center of your motivation. “This is what is important in life.”
And then it’s gone.
So you’ve lost an essential part of your identity, your daily routine, and your purpose in life. Now what?
Now you feel disconnected (because you are. You were disconnected from something that made meaning in your life.) Now you feel aimless (because you lost your purpose.) Now life seems meaningless (because what’s important no longer is.) The more of these changes that happen at once, the harder it is to find your footing.
Can you see that your feelings of dissociation are normal now?
You’re dealing with a profound change in your life and self. What once made sense is divorced from you.
In this case, I’d focus on the things that fell out of whack.
Identity: Who Am I?
Take time to remember who you were before you lost touch with yourself. Old favorites, music, movies, habits, hobbies, interests. Think back on your successes and failures too, what you’ve overcome.
Purpose: Why Am I Here?
Reconnect with the things you used to think were important. Remember what you believed in. You may have to question some of it and discard old ideas that no longer work for you. When you figure out what you DON’T believe, it is often easier to understand what you DO believe. “Not this– but this !!!” (Add a subheading here of  “What Do I Want?” or maybe it’s its own heading. idk.)
Function: How Do I Create My Life?
Create new habits. Make appointments. Sign up for classes. Get a new job. Join challenges. Keep a to do list. Get your life moving so that you can engage in it again and choose which habits work for you.
It turns out, my friends, that I could actually talk about this all day long.
This is the subject of my work that I’ve been doing for the last 20 years or more. I call it Art and Transformation, and I use creativity and reflection to help us understand ourselves, work through change, and create a life that is meaningful and empowering. Answering this ask has helped me focus on some of my own Identity, Purpose and Function questions, as rebuilding this work has been part of my process in facing the extreme changes I’ve gone through in the last few years. I should just cut and paste this whole ask into my scrivener file. It might get its own file.

Is there any significant differences between university and high school? And is university life is more fun than high school? xD I'm kinda excited for my university life when I looked at your university chit chat lolol (I'm on my third year of high school btw *winkwink*) lolol
Awesome!  You’ve almost reached the end!  Hope you’re having fun though!(And glad you’re enjoying the chit chat posts.  I’ve been having a great time at college - and I’m on my 3rd year of college, so if you ever want to talk to me, feel free!)
To be honest, I don’t have much person experience with a high school setting!  Let’s hear it for the homeschoolers, lol!  But I did get some notes from my roommate  who did do a highschool.
there’s a lot more freedom (and free time) once you get to university/college
however, it is easier to fall behind (because, for the most part, teachers won’t check if you’ve gotten your hw done unless it’s graded and even that is easy enough to bs most of the time)
a lot more diversity (for the most part) and not as “cliquey” - you have the chance to have friends from every path of life; age wise, race wise, interest wise, just everything, college has it
figuring out what you’re interested in and getting to take classes all focused on it (your major) is something that you’ll be doing things that interest you so the work tends to be more fun
side note from MM: don’t be afraid to play around with that a bit; I was going to be a Psych and Forensic Science double major.  End of second year I realized that’s not what I wanted to do.  Now I have a minor in FrSc and have one in Philosophy and Law (something I’m a lot more interested in).
If you figure out that you don’t want to do what you said originally, no one is going to judge you for it.  We’ve all done it.  I’m a 3rd year and most of my friends are 3rd years - I don’t know one person who hasn’t played around with their major/minor a little.
a lot more options for clubs and extracurriculars; play around with it, find your people
Here’s a list of things that both her and I have learned during our three years to make it a little easier:
for the first week of class you can pretty much make friends with anyone in the dining hall/library - after that you can’t really just go over and sit next to someone and introduce yourself, however, if there’s someone who looks interesting/is reading your favorite book, don’t let that stop you
try and make friends from all over the place; your groups/clubs, your different classes,
peer pressure isn’t as big a deal (because you can have so many friends from all over the place and unless you go to a small university, you’ll definitely have friends that don’t all know each other) so if you don’t feel comfortable doing something there, don’t let anything stop you from walking out (I mean, don’t do it now, but definitely don’t feel any hesitation to do it in college)
side note from MM: you’ll get people from all different paths of life and backgrounds, and while diversity is great and everything, it’s okay to have a bit of a “comfort zone” when it comes to what you do and who you hang out;  experiment some but don’t forget to stay true to yourself, I’ve had some friends who “experiment” with the wrong things and everything falls apart; if there’s someone who’s a bad influence, just let them go - college can be fun, but it can also be stressful - do not add onto it by dragging a bad group of friends behind you
you’re organizational style that you use for high school might not work for college - find one that fits your schedule, if you have to change it every semester than go ahead and do it, make it work for you
you can definitely join a new club half way through the semester - if one doesn’t work out but you like having the social interaction, definitely do it
another thing, if you’re religious look into one of the religion groups on campus.  Don’t worry that you might not be religious enough, there will be people to match every level of dedication in it.  Also, there’s plenty of non-denominational ones there as well.  Take advantage of it (*most tend to have free food too!  once you’re in college, take advantage of that! :)
this is especially important if you live off campus - it’s a little harder to make friends (but definitely not impossible) if you’re not on campus, so take advantage of the groups/clubs
TALK TO YOUR PROFESSORS!!!!  even if you’re taking an online class or something, they will remember this, they will help you, they sometimes give you tips that pretty much make everything a gajillion times easier
even if it’s just saying something like “Thank you for making this class so interesting.  You are not boring.  Thank you for that.” they will appreciate it, and it will probably make them smile
ask questions in class - I guarantee that the first time a professor makes a point, maybe only 50% of the class has actually gotten what they said, that means at least 50% doesn’t get it (you will be considered a hero among your peers)
you can also relate it to outside material - don’t be a show off but it shows that you’re thinking critically, THIS WILL IMPRESS PROFESSORS
basically, unless you’re in a beginner 100+ lecture hall, the professor will know you and part of your grade will probably be some sort of subjective grading (like 15% of your grade is participation) - this means, make sure the professor knows that you’re involved and paying attention, 15% can bring your grade up by a whole letter
take a class just for fun - you can probably use it as an elective, and it will make the semester a bit more enjoyable for you
I hope this helped, was interesting, informational, or at the very least didn’t make you hate the idea of college all together!
If you guys have anymore questions, or comments or are just stressed about school, feel free to talk to me!  I’m on my third year so I’ve done most of it already...and if I haven’t, I probably have a friend who has and so can still get the answers!
