Final evaluation.

In this assignment was about ‘the others’ we got a choice of what we want to set out assignment on whether it’s stereotypes or cultural based. I decided to use the issue of beauty standards in today’s society as my theme. I think it’s important because it’s effecting young people in a bad way, instead of promoting natural beauty the media are setting an example to young people by wearing loads of makeup, getting plastic surgery, making their lips bigger, making yourself look better when in fact it’s not good for you, it could go terribly wrong and instead of getting the ‘flawless’ look you could end up worse and even more insecure.

I researched Barbara Kruger a lot this assignment because I discovered her during ‘the start’ project and I fell in love with her work but I didn’t have an opportunity to relate her to my work. She has strong messages about social issues in today’s society about feminism, political issues and much more. She creates amazing pieces of art out of them. I have decided to use some quotes that suit the whole idea of my assignment and match it to some images that society expects us to look like/be like. I would say my research influenced my final images as they’re done in the style of Barbara Kruger. I think I researched her in depth because I have even done my pamphlet based on her. which included over 500 words worth of research. 

Throughout the whole project I have achieved many things, one of them was collaborating with Art and Design by helping them out photograph shoes which also in a way is 3D work as we were photographing objects. The shoes were meant to represent the holocaust awareness, I really enjoyed the experience and I would do it again. I managed to get some photos of the general public looking at the shoes which was really hard as hardly anyone would go up to them to have a closer look. I think they felt pressured because some of the art and design students including me and two of my classmates were walking around with cameras trying to take photos. But I have managed to get some decent shots. 

Also for my 3D aspect I have participated in the 3D food photography activity where we got put into little groups and tried out taking photos of foods from different cultures which was really fun, having to use the soft boxes again but we had to focus on the perspective and what angle we take the photos at. But I have decided to go further with the 3D part to the assignment and I have done a shoot based on makeup which fits into my assignment theme, makeup is the main cause of society’s beauty standards because everyone on the media are wearing makeup and looking ‘flawless’ having makeup tutorials on Facebook or Instagram pop up showing us ‘beauty’ means wearing makeup and looking perfect.

When we first got briefed the assignment I was unsure what to do. Everyone had so many ideas but for the first two days I wasn’t sure what I want to do. But finally I remembered Barbara Kruger and it finally clicked. From then onwards I knew what I wanted to do. I got really passionate about this project. I think I’ve been the most passionate about this assignment more than the previous ones, I’m more happy with the outcome and I think I’ve grown better as a photographer, Knowing how to edit photos better, focusing on the angles of the photos and what I want the final outcome to be and this attitude got me far because I’m really happy with the final images. 

I have used maths in the general Camera settings, the aperture, shutter speed and iso. I have also used maths in my pamphlet, I have carried out a survey on peoples opinions and views on beauty standards in today’s society. I have made a bar chart showing what people said. Also for the English part of the assignment I have done the 500 word pamphlet with the research I did and my opinions on the artist

I have been really up to date this assignment, I had everything planned out, I knew what I was going to do for my final images and what I was going to do for my 3D images. My attendance has been really good. I have put maximum effort into this assignment, I really enjoyed it. One of the challenges that I have faced was not knowing how to do the red boxes with the writing over it but then I thought i could make a box in photoshop, fill it with a solid colour and put that layer under the text so that you can see the text on the box giving it a cool graphic design effect.

I have enjoyed everything in this project I don’t think there’s anything that I haven’t enjoyed. I’m really proud of the work that I have produced this assignment.

Overall I think this project was successful. I enjoyed it more than all the precious assignments because i was really passionate about what I was doing. I’m really happy with the outcome of all the photos. I have developed as a photographer and improved my photoshop editing skills. I now know more about editing and techniques behind it.
