“You’ve grown complacent, doctor, if all it takes for you to go behind the IPC’s back is a vague request from a Stoneheart.”

“That is not complacency. It is choice.”

“Well, isn’t that a little careless?” Aventurine huffs and looks away, absentmindedly tracing the rim of the forgotten shot glass in between them. “What, when Topaz comes knocking at your door in the middle of the night, you’ll drop everything to assist her in her plight?”

“No.” Ratio says easily. All too easily, all too quickly, and giving away just a bit too much. “Of course not.”

Those striking eyes look up at him, flashing with an unreadable glint. He feels like his very soul is being picked apart, like the fundamental machinations of his being are being tinkered with. “Then?”

“I accepted your request because it was you who needed my help. Not the IPC, not the ten Stonehearts, but you, Aventurine.” He pointedly looks away, as if he hadn’t laid his heart bare on the granite countertop just in front of them. “Is that so hard to fathom?”

“Perhaps.”

“It shouldn’t be. For you, I have done far more for far less.”

Aventurine scoffs. “What do you have to gain here, then? You know as well as I that I cannot promise you anything.”

“You can, my dear gambler." Ratio insists. "Your safety, for one. Your life and its continued existence, for another.”

“My sincerest apologies, doctor. I’m afraid that not even that is set in stone.”

“On whose terms? Yours, or the IPC?”

“Are those not one and the same? I am but an asset. My life is but a debt to be repaid in full.”

a/n -> this can be read as a standalone but i wrote it after writing "a second longer," so this is the part two for it. also apologies for uploading shorter works, but i've got a good one for mingyu's birthday for sure !! :)

When you entered the apartment, it was out of a romcom movie, with petals lining the floor and the smell of vanilla candles gracing the air, knowing mingyu, though this wasn’t unexpected. He always loved going out of his way to show his love for you. 

And there he was, setting the table, his hair which had grown out for the time being were disheveled as he seemed to mutter something to himself as he prepared the table, you walk slowly behind him and place a stray strand behind his ear, to which he looks back surprised and then smiles, and then wrapping his arms around you. 

“Look who it is!”

With the both of you smiling ear-to-ear, it was a moment you would never forget, small moments like these when you were so sure of yourself, and this, the connection you shared with this person that you wanted it to last beyond forever. 

“You didn’t need to do this, gyu,” you say softly, he didn’t need to, but you appreciate what he did, part of loving him was understanding his love language and speaking to him in the same language so you take out your bag and open the zipper.

“Wait, wait, close your eyes,” 

And you take out the paper ring you made, and place it on his ring finger, when he open his eyes and grins with his fangs on full display, this paper ring has made him more happy than anything worth millions has.

“Until i put a real one here,”

You kiss him, and it doesn’t feel any different than the first time, he doesn’t fail to make you feel like you’re the most important person in his world, and stagnation point? Never heard of it. Everyday is just something new, like rereading your favourite book and finding new lines everyday that you love. You don’t think you could grow sick of reading it.

Dinner was perfect, your favourite pasta, your favourite wine and your favourite person, you don’t think it could get any better than this.

Later, when you’re on the sofa, watching something you can’t pay less attention to but mingyu is laughing at, you look at him and feel nostalgic for the both of you an year ago, they were oblivious to so many great moments you’d spend together in that one year, and then hopeful, for the next few years that you would spend with him and probably look back at this moment.

it's almost been a year since you started working in Haven Cloud and you look back to the day you find yourself on its doorstep.

“It’s already been nine months since you started working here, huh?”

You jump at the sudden voice, having been busy zoning out as it’s a pretty slow day in the cafe. You turn to see Chan leaning on the station, his boyish smile and messy hair reminds you once again that this boss of yours is younger than you are.

Other than the fact that he’s literally the owner of this cafe you’re working at, the way he carries himself often makes you forget that he’s younger than you. He’s very mature regardless of his age, and you often find yourself admiring him when he readily solves unexpected problems in the cafe.

Be it logistics because your supplier somehow messes things up in the warehouse to entitled customers who would show up from time to time, Chan is always ready to face them; always engaging the staff if they have other alternatives even though you all know you almost always go with his opinion because it is the best one.

It’s only recently that you’ve become a full time worker, the first six month passed by in a blink of an eye even though you’re initially just here to find something to do. Being in the last year of university, you’re left with only a few classes to attend as you focus on your final paper. Perhaps you should be more thankful you don’t have any classes to redo, passing them with good enough scores that your worst grade is a C+ (Statistics be damned). 

That’s good enough.

But that means you’d be a little too free for your liking; and it was months ago that you were talking to your roommate about wanting to take a part time job so you could find things to do and some side earning because why not. You’re not interested enough in academics to apply for the TA or tutoring role so those two are a no go.

“Mm. I think Mingyu mentioned his friend recently opened a cafe or something, do you want me to ask?” Lisa had offered, and you tried to recall a Mingyu even though there’s too many in your university. She’s probably referring to Mingyu from the basketball team (he’s one year above you, you think, but you’re not really aware of people who aren’t in the same department as yours), and she confirmed your assumption when she mentioned she’d ask him after he’s done with practice.

Next thing you knew, you’re already starting day one in the cafe with Chan patiently helping you through the week. He’s the owner, you were told since the beginning, having established the cafe just a little over a year ago. But because the cafe is still small and it is his main job, Chan still runs the cafe on a daily basis. He does just about everything; covers for the barista when he’s not available, cleans the table when you’re too busy in the cashier, even keeps track of inventories when he has free time.

That said, you’re only the third full-time worker in the cafe, the first one being Boo Seungkwan, the barista, and Yoon Jeonghan, the pastry chef. Later on, you found out that the three of them started Haven Cloud together. Jeonghan is actually the co-owner though he preferred to bake and serve than do “his fancy job” (his words, not yours) as the co-owner, while Seungkwan helped invest a little and offered to be the barista instead because he’s just finished taking a course for it.

“It has, huh?” You grin before going outside the station to help Ryujin clean the tables.

Ryujin is a part timer that has joined before you, though she says she’s happy with being a part timer when Chan asks if she wants to work full time with him. She’s a very attractive girl who also works part time in a hair salon (she’s been asking if you want to dye your hair because she’s just perfected a new technique), and you think that’s why Ryujin refuses Chan’s offer; she likes to try new things and she doesn’t want to be chained to one job (or anything, for that matter).

You talk some more with her and Chan as the three of you do your own stuff, your resident barista nowhere to be found–presumably in the kitchen with Jeonghan. It’s around three in the afternoon, which is a weird time for the cafe to be slow, because usually at least your regulars are already in around these hours. Right now, there’s only one customer in the cafe, a regular that’s basically a friend to all of you at this point, and he had his headphones on, focused with something on his laptop (which is why the three of you can just talk without having to worry you’d bother him).

The familiar tinkling of the bell echoes through the empty cafe, and Ryujin readily greets the customer as you get back to the cashier and Chan goes to call Seungkwan from the kitchen.

“Hi, how can I help you?” you smile at the newcomer, a pretty girl with long, black hair that you’re sure have never been here before. You’ll remember her if you have; she’s easily the most beautiful girl you’ve ever laid your eyes on.

“Hi! Saw this cafe by accident and thought I’d drop by,” she happily indulges you in small talk, eyes busy roaming the menu board on the wall. Gosh, even her voice sounds nice. “What’s your specialty?”

“Do you want caffeine or?” You’ve always liked this question, happy that someone trusts you with their order. Also, to you, it validates your position in the cafe; like, wow, someone look at you and think you’ll know what’s good. Maybe it’s a little weird to think of it that much, but you just like to know that you are a part of this cafe. That’s how dear Haven Cloud is to your heart.

“Mmm, I don’t mind either but I’m not really in the mood for a cold drink, to be honest.” She blows air into her cheek, and you almost embarrassingly squeal at how adorable she looks. Gosh, it’s not funny the amount of cafe crushes, as you and Ryujin label them, you’ve had since you started working here. There are too many people dropping by here who are way too attractive for them not to be celebrities.

Sometimes you get giddy when they return for a second time, though you don’t give them any special treatment or anything. At most, you’re just more friendly and smile a little wider when you talk to them.

You hum, pretending to consider it for a second even though you already know what you’re going to tell her since she’s said she wants something warm.

“If you like something tingly, our hot rum mocha is always a favorite even during summer.” You offer with a smile, and she just nods and says that she’d happily have that–asking for an extra cinnamon on top. “Do you want anything to go with it?”

“Our dark chocolate chip cookies are to die for.” You jump at the sudden voice, and you turn to see Jeonghan with a fresh batch of croissant (when did he even come out of the kitchen?), a flirty smile on his face as he winks at her. “I’d know.”

You roll your eyes at this tendency of his, though your customer seems to not think much of it as she shakes her head and tells him she’d get some if you recommend it. You laugh when Jeonghan mocks a broken heart, telling her he’s hurt and she’s not allowed to order the cookies for that comment and then trots back to the kitchen after he’s successfully put the tray on the rack.

“Sorry, he’s always like that.” You scrunch your nose in amusement, glad that the girl simply grins and says she doesn’t mind at all and finds him funny.

“I’ll get that dark chocolate chip cookie then,” she muses as she scans the pastry display.

“Sure. Can I get your name?”

“Oh! Jisoo,” she informs you with a smile, muttering something about how she would be coming back to try out the pastries because they all look appetizing.

You thank her when she hands you the bill to pay for her orders, and it’s then that Chan comes out of the kitchen and says that Seungkwan is apparently out to the minimarket down the street because he needs to stock something real quick. You’re not sure when did he go, but you assume he might’ve left from the backdoor and that’s why no one but Jeonghan is aware that Seungkwan’s left.

“It’s fine, I can make the drink by myself,” you shrug nonchalantly, though the thought of making a drink still makes you excited everytime it happens. “It’s one of the recipes that I’ve perfected, anyway.”

Chan grins in amusement, though he nods and leans on the station and says he’ll watch you make it. It has been quite some time since he saw you make a drink; the chance doesn’t present itself often enough because Seungkwan is there most of the time, and Chan is better at making most drinks than you are.

“To think you used to be scared to even touch the foam machine,” the younger guy teases you, and you laugh as you start to prepare the drink, your mind taking you back to approximately nine months ago when you’ve just started working in the cafe.

The weather was super nice that day. But you’re inside Haven Cloud as you sat awkwardly in front of the younger guy, having some kind of interview though you guessed he’s really just trying to see if your personality matched well with his. In a workplace this small, you suppose it’d be better for him to be with someone he knew for sure he could work with. Skills could be trained, but attitudes were another thing altogether.

Lisa had kindly offered to come with you, and she’s currently talking to Seungkwan at the counter about the pastries within the display because everything seemed delicious to her.

“I don’t… know anything about working in a cafe,” you confessed right from the beginning. Chan intimidated you for reasons that you didn’t understand, because he seemed very warm and nurturing despite his age, so you really didn’t know why you’d feel intimidated.

But you were. And you thought it’s his sharp eyes and the aura surrounding him that made you want to just bow a little and give respect to the guy. Even though he’s smiling and there’s nothing threatening about him, you know he’s not the type of person that you’d want to be enemies with.

“Always a first time,” he shrugged with a kind smile. “Do you at least know the difference between latte and mochaccino?”

“Mochaccino contains chocolate, right?”

“That’s enough basics then.” The grin he gave you was so assured, like he’s not gambling if he decided to take you in. What if you’re extremely clumsy and you ended up wasting a lot of his ingredients? “Plus, you won’t be working as a barista though it is necessary that you know the difference between our menus. Just consider it an oral exam or something.”

“What… would my work entail, exactly?”

Chan hummed, as if wondering how to answer without scaring you away. “I need someone to help me, basically. Mostly, you’d be in the cashier; but you’d need to help around with just about everything because we’re still small and I only have one part-timer at the moment.”

The way he looked at you was the first time you felt that he’s a little unsure–would you be okay with this agreement? He probably thought. You appreciated his honesty though; glad that he didn’t feel the need to conceal that you’d be working as everything you need to be if you decided to work here.

Frankly, it’s a better strategy than to trick someone into working only to find out later on that you’d have more baggage than you signed up for; who knows how long someone would stand being in such a position? He’d have a harder time looking for a replacement for god knows how often if he decided to go down that road. 

“How many of you are there?” you dared to ask to get a picture of how much you’d be helping out exactly.

Chan smiled sheepishly before he answered. “Just 4. Me, the barista, the pastry chef, and the part-timer I told you about. Sometimes my brother helps when the cafe is extra busy; but it doesn’t happen that often because it’s only been a few months since we opened. We’ve picked up a few regulars though, so I think it’s a safe enough time now to recruit another help.”

For all its worth, you really did appreciate his honesty. You liked knowing what you're up against, even if it might be overwhelming at times, and you’re starting to warm up to the idea of working in this small, cozy cafe due to the fact that the owner had this much integrity. Though you’re a little worried that he might be taken advantage of one way or another by how open this guy seemed to be. 

Plus, you had always wondered how it’s like to work in one after watching one too many romcoms.

After talking some more about your shifts, salary, and so on, you promised Chan you’d come back in a few days after thinking a little more. You’re not even sure what you’re going to ponder over, but you felt like it’s necessary for some reason. The pay was good considerably, and Chan even said you’re free to arrange your shifts with Ryujin as necessary, and that you’re allowed to do your assignments in the cafe too if it’s not too busy.

Maybe you’re just scared you wouldn’t be up to this job because of the vague description of ‘helping around’; the line between questioning whether you had it in you to do it and whether you wanted to do it was a little too blurry at that point.

The next day, you dropped by as a customer because Lisa had apparently fallen in love with the cafe after one visit and wanted to try the Lemon Cake that’s apparently this month’s special but wasn’t on stock yesterday because you came when Jeonghan was still baking a fresh batch.

“Oh, hi!” Chan greeted you happily, and you told him you’re here to try their delicacy and maybe some latte. “Sure! It’s a little busy today but you shouldn’t wait for long.”

Evidently, there was no line at the cashier; but it’s true that the cafe was pretty packed. You counted only three empty tables, the rest full with customers though it’s not noisy. They’re all talking in hushed tones, the soft song playing in the background still vivid in your ears despite the fact that these people were talking.

Lisa told you to find a seat after asking for your order, telling you she wanted to ask a few things to the cashier and the barista so it might be better for you to do so. Sitting down on one of the empty tables by the window, you had only just realized that you liked the ambience of this cafe. It’s not those kinda crowded, boisterous cafes even when it’s busy.

You didn’t really get to look around yesterday, but now that you had the chance, you noted that Haven Cloud was the kind of cafe you’d go to when you want to be alone with other people. You wondered if it’s because it’s still small and fairly new, but the mood of the cafe made you warm inside. You wouldn’t make a business appointment here, it’s much too homey for that. But you definitely would bring your laptop and sit down to focus by yourself.

The sound of something breaking brought you out of your mind, and you saw a little girl tearing up at the glass shards on her feet. She almost bawled when Chan came by, her mom already apologizing profusely because she accidentally dropped the plate when her kid continuously tugged on her dress.

He smiled kindly at her, you noted, telling her it’s fine then you saw him squat down to meet the little girl’s eyes. You couldn’t really hear him, but you assumed he told her there’s no need to cry and that he’s not angry at her. He looked up to the mom and, at her nod, he carried the girl in his arms so Ryujin could clean the shards; you could hear her apologizing to the customers for the inconvenience.

“Do you want a cookie?” Chan’s soft voice traveled to your table as he stood nearby, the mom too apologetic to let Ryujin clean by herself. Perhaps he asked her if he could take the kid with him for a moment–who knew? “I’ll give you one if you promise to not cry and not bother your mom when she’s holding glassware, okay? What if you got hurt?”

“You’re not mad at me?” her small voice asked, sniffling a little.

“As long as you promised to say sorry and be careful from now on,” he patted her head. You almost melt at the way she offered him her tiny pinky, and you could see that Chan himself almost squealed at how adorable the exchange was. He accepted her promise, and you saw her hug him shyly before telling him, yes, she would like to have a cookie.

You heard the woman offering to pay for the cookie, but Chan shook his head and said it’s fine and it’s an honest mistake so he’s not blaming her for anything. She still felt bad though, you suppose, because you saw her drop way too many tips on the jar that Chan definitely couldn’t refuse.

“You okay?” Snapping out of your memories, you turn to see Chan looking at you in question. He looks almost worried, though you shake your head and tell him you just zoned out for a bit there. “Mind sharing your thoughts?”

“Mmm. Just got reminded of Hanna,” you grin as you finally work on Jisoo’s order.

“Little Hanna? Mrs. Jang’s daughter?” He tilts his head, unsure why you’d suddenly thought of her.

You nod, hands busy as you tell him you just returned from a walk down memory lane. Nine months seem so long ago now that you’re here. Chan sends you a questioning gaze, but you tell him you’ll tell him later and call for Jisoo because her order is ready.

“I don’t think I’ve told you,” you start, leaning back on the counter right next to Chan as you both watch the cafe. You see Ryujin wiping the glass door, and you could’ve sworn you can hear Jeonghan cursing faintly from the kitchen followed by the sound of something thudding. “But I decided to give working here a try because I saw how you handled that situation with Hanna.”

“Really?” He seems surprised, his eyebrows shooting up behind his fringe.

“Yup. I knew you wouldn’t get mad at a kid. But I didn’t expect you’d be so gentle about the whole thing?” You reminisce, still remembering how your admiration for the guy begins to grow from that point onwards.

Chan doesn’t seem to get it, his brows creasing with a confused smile.

“You think it’s just the obvious thing to do, don’t you?” You guess with a coy smile, which Chan answers by a sheepish grin and a scratch on the side of his face. Gosh, can he be more adorable? “Well, you could’ve handled it much worse. But you didn’t. You did more than good and I admire you for that.”

“Thank you, I guess?” he says with a hesitant tone. You always find it funny how bad he is at receiving compliments no matter how deserving he is.

“Thank you,” you counter back, a genuine smile etched on your face. You’ve never expected to talk about this with Chan; not because you meant to hide it but because you simply didn’t think the chance would present itself. But now it’s here, and you’re glad it is because you think you owe Chan a lot for giving you a chance. “For letting me join the cafe.”

You pause for a second before you continue, meeting his eyes as you do so with the warmest smile on your face.

“For letting me find a home in Haven Cloud.”

First week of NaNoWriMo, Prologue to The King, The Knight and the Mage, plus this is my 100th Tumblr post on this blog!

Hello! So, it’s already the 8th of November. One week since NaNoWriMo began and I am unsurprisingly behind on my word count. 

But given the fact my writing style pretty much consists of sprints in between the chaos of my life I’m not too concerned (yet). 

In the end I decided to go with “The king, The Knight and The Mage”, seeing as it was fully outlined and a standalone. Like I said I do plan to upload the first draft fully to the internet. 

I’m currently three chapters in (the third one is really long, I’ll probably do a post explaining why that is because it’s actually quite curious). But for now I’m only going to upload the Prologue to here. I thought it’d be a good 100th post. 

Quick warning: This is a first draft, that’s kind of the thing with NaNoWriMo, this means there’s more than likely typos, continuity errors and just bad writing. Also, for now the genre is fantasy, usually I do young adult fantasy but there is some heavier than usual content in this one (mostly violence and death, so may this be your warning).

With that said, enjoy! 

Prologue: 

Prophets talked a lot. Most of it was pointless.  

However, any kingdom with an ounce of self-respect took good care of them. Usually, they lived in palaces or castles. Close to the court, the king or whatever form of government had to make decisions.  

In the case of Regnoma, the prophets lived at the highest level of one of the tallest towers. They had an entire floor to themselves, one they could fill with smoke and shining liquids as they practiced their poetry. Prophets loved poetry. It was a way to make their predictions sounds more meaningful.  

“I am but your sacrosanct servant,” one of the younger prophets whispered, her raven black hair fell over her face as she curtseyed as low as she could, holding the rims of her red dress.  

"Sacrosanct?” the king’s bodyguard, a large man with broad shoulders, short brown hair and small narrowed brown eyes asked the king.  

“Do not be concerned Leon,” the king, a tall skinny man in expensive robes that swayed as he walked and tired blue eyes reassured.  

“Today I foresee, if you dare to advance outwards after the sun hits it’s highest peak, you shall find yourself aqueous, vexatious and in need of assistance, trapped by your own silks.”  

The king nodded. He turned his head only slightly so he could see Leon’s concerned expression before gesturing for them to leave.  

It took a moment for both their eyes to adjust once the thick wooden door closed behind them. Standing on the stone spiral staircase with sunlight slipping in through a stone window, Leon looked nervous. “That did not sound good.”  

The king smiled, still looking exhausted. “All they said is that we can expect it to rain this afternoon and the water will make getting my robes of more complicated than usual.” He shook his head ever so slightly as they began to their way down the spiral staircase, “it would be wise of me to prohibit the presence of thesaurus’ around them.”  

“Oh,” Leon relaxed. “That is good news... I mean, I may have put clothes out yesterday to dry that have not yet come in but... better than what I was imagining.”  

“I know their speech is weird, but they can speak normally. It’s helpful to remember that the more complicated they speak, the less important the information they are giving you. If it’s urgent, they’ll make themselves understood. They seem to be under the impression that if they don’t seem important, they won’t be allowed to stay here,” he smiled. “It’s admittedly adorable.”  

“With all due respect Your Majesty, what you see as adorable to me is merely agitating.”  

“Well. Adorable or not. They are very important.”  

“I know that Your Majesty.”  

“They see the future.”  

“Or they are very good guessers. What was it they told you yesterday, that your letter would arrive?”  

“And it did.” The king chuckled as they reached the bottom of the staircase and began to make their way through the halls towards the court. “All you must do is visit them three times a day and inform me of anything important.”  

“It’s an honor Your Majesty.”  

“It is.” The king reminded. “You’re escalating in the ranks very quickly.”  

“Yes, the other knights are becoming jealous. Are you certain you wish to entrust me with this and not one of your older knights?”  

“I wouldn’t want to take up their busy schedule in which they gossip and bring each other down with such responsibilities.”  

Leon knew how the king felt for some of the knights. He couldn’t say he felt much different. “I’ll be sure to visit three times a day. Anything important will go straight to you.”  

The king nodded. “You remember the dragon attack from a couple of months ago?”  

Leon sighed. “How could I forget?”  

“It was horrendous. However, it could have been much worse.”  

“Had the prophets not foreseen it.” Leon nodded, “I know Your Majesty. I’m serious, it’s an honor.”  

“Sometimes you’re hard to read Leon.”  

“Well, you of all people should not struggle so much Your Majesty. I’ve only ever spoken the truth to you.”  

“That’s true... I still do not understand how a human can be as honest as you.”  

“It’s a gift and a curse.”  

The king chuckled once more. “The prophets protect the kingdom. In exchange, we protect them, from being abused, manipulated, we protect them from society and from discovering those new calendars that teach you a new word every day.”  

“Oh my...” Leon stopped in his tracks. “That would be a disaster.”  

They both laughed.  

“May I take a dictionary with me, Your Majesty?”  

“Take a linguist if you desire. Just bring the messages back fully translated, please.”

The king’s court room was a weirdly quiet place. For full-court sessions were rare, mostly it was small meetings, it would be the king, one of his main advisors and then specialists.  

Perhaps it felt quieter than it was, for the room was extensive enough to hold the king, every advisor he had and a few more. It had uncomfortable wooden seats on every square meter of floor space. Over a hundred or so. All surrounding a large thick wooden table. It was pointless, for it was impossible for somebody to hear another person at the other end. Which led to either breaking protocol by shouting or playing a game of telephone with important information.  

At the very end of the table was the only comfortable looking chair, a throne made of wood and velvet cushions. On it sat the king.  

Today it was the king and a mere four others, sat around a thick wooden table talking about a stray cat problem in the poorer neighborhoods of the kingdom. It was hard for the king to imagine anything more boring.  

He wanted nothing more than to leave this meeting behind him.  

Perhaps he wanted it too much for the thick wooden doors suddenly opened. The guards standing by them on the inside pointed their weapons before recognizing the person who entered.  

More importantly, the king recognized and immediately stood.  

“The prophets, today there was important news, Your Majesty.” Leon looked distressed; the last two words sounded like an afterthought. Protocol was not on his mind; it was only the formality of court that got them out of him.  

The king nodded. “Continue trouble shooting without me,” he ordered his advisor. He walked away from the table, and out of the throne room for privacy. Well, relatively privacy, there were guards at every door and window, but they at least pretended to not hear anything.  

Leon took a couple of deep breaths, the king realized he must have come running straight from the prophet’s room, it was that time of day after all.  

“Tell me, Leon, what is wrong.”  

Leon took a deep breath, he stood tall, and he spoke.

eyy friends, I just uploaded chapter 6 of my big wolfstar fic just in time for Moony’s bday today– and this chapter just happens to contain a flashback to Remus’s 18th, so I’ve decided to post that section here as well! I hope you enjoy this little scene; I think it works pretty well as a standalone c:

On a clear moonless night in March of seventh year, Sirius finds Remus atop the astronomy tower, gazing out over the grounds. There’s a half-spent joint hanging loosely from his fingers, his soft curls and the lines of his scars silvered by the starlight. He looks strangely ageless, like an ancient marble statue, perfection set in stone and made all the more beautiful for all the scars of ages past…

‘Looking for me?’ Sirius asks softly.

Remus twitches, the way he does when he has failed to notice Sirius approaching (not common, considering his acute sense of smell, but in this case the pungent smoke has probably masked Sirius’s scent). He lifts the joint to his chapped lips, and draws in a deep breath, the glow of the smouldering tip reflecting golden in his irises. He holds the breath, then lets the smoke out in a thin jet that is rapidly whisked away to nothing by a chill gust of wind. ‘Yes, I regularly come up here to look for my mates,’ he answers dryly.

Remus takes another pull on his joint, then offers it to Sirius, who accepts it delicately between his fingers. ‘Perhaps I just wanted to have a smoke in peace,’ Remus murmurs, watching with a strange intensity as Sirius places the unlit end between his lips.

‘Mmh, nah… you’d have picked a better place to hide if you didn’t want to be found.’

Silence settles over them, only the soft whistling of the wind over the castle rooftops beneath them. Sirius draws in a deep breath of his own, the musky smell of the weed at odds with the frosty night air. He passes the joint back to Remus, who leans against the parapet, gazing up at the sky. ‘…What about you, then?’

‘Maybe I wanted to wish you a happy birthday.’

Remus hesitates– it’s not yet midnight, a fact which Sirius expects him to point out (thereby forcing Sirius to defend it)– but the comment never comes, and instead Remus just quirks an eyebrow at him with a stilted sort of nonchalance and says, ‘You couldn’t wait until a more reasonable hour?’

‘We’re both awake either way, so why bother?’

Remus shrugs, and looks back out over the grounds, his brows drawn together and his mouth clamped tightly shut, shoulders tense.

‘I made you something,’ Sirius says awkwardly, unsure what’s going on with Remus. 'I know you don’t like expensive things, so I thought…’ Remus emits a strangled choked sound, and Sirius shifts uncomfortably. 'Er, well, it’s nothing much, so…’

‘I’m sorry,’ Remus whispers. 'I just don’t… I’m not really in the mood, I guess.’

Sirius reaches out, half of a mind to take Remus’s hand, but Remus shifts, pulling the hand inwards. Sirius lets his own arm drop, instead turning to lean his shoulder against the parapet. ‘Talk to me, Moons.’

‘Honestly… I’m not sure what there is to celebrate.’ Remus slides down the low wall until he’s sat slouched against it, and Sirius sits next to him, their shoulders bumping together. ‘This is… it’s going to sound bad,’ Remus mumbles, his shoulders hunched.

‘Try me.’

Remus huffs out a breath, but continues. ‘In just a few months, we’ll all leave here, and… you and James, you’ve got so much ahead of you to look forward to, and even Peter has his family’s apothecary business to go into. But for me– coming here, to Hogwarts, it’s the closest I’ll ever have to a normal life. After this is over… I’m just another fucking werewolf.’

‘Bloody hell, Moony,’ he growls; 'you can’t honestly think that we’ll just abandon you as soon as we’ve left school.’

‘Well… no. But there’s a war on, and James has got Lily, and you–’

‘I’m going to stop you right there, Remus,’ he says flatly, and Remus blinks up at him, startled at the lack of nickname. 'I can’t speak for James or Peter, but I didn’t break the fucking law just for a lark– Padfoot is all for you, and always has been, and will be for as long as you want me there. This–’ (he gestures at himself) ‘–is forever, and I really do mean that.’ This time, Sirius doesn’t hesitate to place his hand over Remus’s, twining their fingers together, and in a moment of boldness he finds the strength to say what he’s never dared to before– ‘I swore to myself that you’d never spend another full moon alone, not as long as it’s within my power to help.’

Remus’s eyes are wide, his lips slightly parted. He has scars on his face and a nose that’s too large and crooked for most people to consider properly attractive and his curls are a mess where he’s been pulling on them and he never seems to know what to do with his long lanky limbs… and he is the most gorgeous person Sirius could possibly imagine. Remus Lupin looks at him in utter disbelief, and Sirius only wishes Remus could see himself the way Sirius does: Beautiful, you’re fucking beautiful as the moon itself.

‘…Sirius, I– but what if you find someone? Who you… want to be with, I mean. Not just as a quick hookup, but…’ Remus shakes his head, huffs out a shaky breath that might almost have qualified as a laugh but seems rather closer to a sob. ‘When you find your own Lily Evans– the person you want to spend the rest of your life with– you needn’t hold yourself to that.’

Sod off, Lupin, Sirius wants to scream, it’s you, it’s always been you– but he doesn’t; he bites it back, as it wouldn’t be right to push that sort of thing on Remus. He knows that Remus fancies blokes, but it is quite obvious that Remus does not fancy him (plenty of other people fancy Sirius, but Remus has seen his darkest twisted secrets and someone as good as Remus couldn’t possibly want someone so messed up). No, Sirius cannot risk their friendship on an unwanted and unrequited declaration of love.

‘…Then I suppose they’d just have to get used to you, Loops, because I’m still never going to go back on my word, no matter what sort of twisted hypothetical situation you try to throw at me.’ Sirius takes a deep breath, then levels his gaze at Remus. ‘Unless you can honestly tell me you want me gone– tell me to fuck off and really mean it. But don’t insult me by suggesting that I don’t understand what I’m offering, or whatever the fuck else you seem to think.’

Remus hears the challenge in his voice, the sharp edge to his words, and glances at him guiltily. ‘…Of course not,’ he croaks. ‘I… didn’t mean to suggest that you’d ever… that you’re not…’ He shakes his head. ‘Sorry.’

Sirius feels the flash of anger and frustration melt away into nothing, vanishing as quickly as they’d come. ‘Don’t be,’ he says, leaning into Remus’s side and sliding an arm around his shoulders. ‘Only… you of all people should know that dogs are very loyal creatures. And I really do mean every word of it.’ Sirius rubs his hand in a slow circle over Remus’s back, and leans forward to look him in the eyes. ‘This was my choice, Remus Lupin, and I’ve never once regretted it.’ And I never will.

Remus gazes at him, wide-eyed, the joint between his fingers long since fizzled out.

‘And… look, now it’s past midnight. So, once again, happy birthday you daft tosser.’

Remus can’t help but smile at that. ‘You said you… made me something?’

Sirius smiles, and pulls the box from the pocket of his robe. ‘All by myself,’ he says proudly.

Remus takes the box and opens it, revealing an assortment of chocolates, moulded into various star shapes. ‘Oh! They look wonderful, Sirius– this can’t have been easy.’

‘Well, the outside is just that Honeydukes 70% you like; I only melted it down and reshaped it to make these.’

‘But… there’s a filling?’

‘All different flavours,’ Sirius says with relish, and he grins and shakes his head as Remus lifts the box to his face. 'You won’t be able to smell what’s inside, though– that’s what makes this my Siriusly Special Starlight Surprise box.’

Remus’s eyebrows shoot up. ‘You’re right… that’s impressive.’

‘I wanted to show you without Prongs or Wormy around,’ Sirius admits. 'I didn’t want to risk anyone else stealing one, since they’re all specially made for you.’

‘Oh,’ Remus says again, a little breathlessly, his gaze returning magnetically to the box. His long fingers skim delicately over the edges of the chocolates, before selecting one at random, bringing it to his lips. His tongue flicks out, eyes bright with curiosity when he still can’t detect the mystery flavour. He bites down, and lets out a soft moan. ‘Ohh…’

Sirius watches, practically vibrating with excitement and nerves; his whole body feels warm and tingly, his heart racing and his cheeks flushed, and he bites down on the knuckle of his index finger to stop himself blurting out something foolish, pestering Remus with half a dozen questions all at once (which flavour did he get? is it all right? is making your definitely-platonic best mate custom chocolates for his birthday Too Much? what if Remus reads too much into it and gets uncomfortable sleeping in the same dorm with a bloke who might sometimes think about what it would be like to kiss him, or other things even more unspeakable? or worse, what if Remus does think about those things too but then they try something and Sirius cocks it up? and on and on and on) and Sirius has to stop himself from reaching out and snatching the box back, chucking it off the tower and into the lake far below.

Remus stares at him, with a heated sort of fascination. ‘Did you… really come up with this all on your own? The recipes for the fillings, and whatever you’ve done to suppress the smell, and…’

‘Yeah,’ Sirius says, attempting a casual smile. 'So you like it? What flavour did you get?’

‘Sirius… this is…’ Remus is, for once, at a loss for words, and for the briefest split second Sirius thinks he might just lean in and press their lips together, let Sirius taste its remnants on his own tongue– but then Remus shakes his head, and the moment is lost. ‘It’s fucking fantastic, as you bloody well know; I’ve never had anything else like it. It’s… magical.’

‘Well, yes,’ Sirius deadpans. 'We are wizards, after all.’

Remus rolls his eyes. ‘Oh sod off, you know what I mean. In a metaphorical sense.’

And of course Sirius does know, because he has felt it too. ‘Like stepping into the Great Hall for the first time,’ he supplies, remembering the first time he’d looked up at the lofty ceiling alight with hundreds of floating candles, the stars beyond much brighter than they ever were in London…

‘Exactly.’ Remus smiles, soft and fond. 'And the flavour was a bit spicy; definitely cinnamon, and… something I’ve tasted in the Potters’ cooking.’

Sirius grins. ‘Full marks, Mr Lupin.’

‘And you said they’re all unique?’ Remus’s eyes stray back to the box, which Sirius reaches over to snap closed.

‘Moony, you fiend, they’re meant to be savoured, not gobbled up all at once!’ He clasps his hand solidly over Remus’s, to ensure it can’t get up to any mischief. ‘…And yes, they’re all different, so you have a lot more to look forward to, but only if you take them one at a time.’

‘All right,’ Remus laughs, setting the box carefully aside. ‘How did you do it? Where did you find the time, or…’

‘Trade secret, Moonshine.’ Sirius bumps their shoulders together. 'It’s like what they say about the Muggle Magic– a Magician never reveals his secrets.’ He gives Remus’s fingers a squeeze. 'If you’re that fond of them, though… perhaps they’ll make an encore performance next year.’

Remus relaxes with a sigh, leaning into him. ‘You really mean it, then?’

‘I love running with you on the moons, Remus Moony Lupin. I can’t imagine anything that could ever change that.’ Sirius brushes his thumb over Remus’s bony knuckles, the small scar curving across one of them, down the back of one long finger– Remus has the loveliest hands– and Sirius decides to throw caution to the winds. 'Live with me,’ he blurts out.

‘Erm– sorry?’

‘After graduation,’ Sirius elaborates. 'My Uncle Alphard left me his flat in London– it’s a nice place; I went to see it after I got the letter.’ Sirius shifts so he can look at Remus. 'At first I thought…’ He gives his head a small shake, shrugs off the truth of how much he wants Remus there, the two of them close. 'Well, it’d be big enough for all four of us, yeah? Prongs said he liked the sound of it.’

For a split second, Remus looks oddly crestfallen, but it’s gone so quickly Sirius thinks he must have imagined it. 'I suppose it’ll be a bit soon for him to move in with Lily,’ Remus says.

Sirius snorts, a wry smile twisting his mouth. 'If she’s not grown sick of him by then, you mean. Still dunno what got into her head, asking him out in the first place…’

Remus snickers at that, his breath clouding on the cold night air. 'Thought she’d broken his brain when she did,’ he says, and laughs out loud when Sirius imitates the panicked look that had come over James’s face– like a deer in headlights, they’d ribbed him after the fact. It had been the last week of term before winter hols, and Lily had approached him in the common room and asked him out to a Hogsmeade date (sometime during the break, after the majority of the students had gone home, since they were both staying and it would be nice to have the village to themselves) and James had hardly slept the night before– but of course it had gone perfectly once James got over his anxiety and remembered that he and Lily had been friendly for months by that point, ever since they began working together in their duties as Head Boy and Girl…

Sirius shakes his head, and pulls Remus into a friendly one-armed hug (he is very careful not to exceed the bounds of what would be considered ‘friendly’, careful not to overstep and make Remus uncomfortable). ‘…Anyway, think about it, will you? Alphard’s flat has got more space than I’d ever need for myself, and I’d miss having you lot around… and it’s properly mine so none of us would have to pay any rent, and… we’ll be able to plan the moons, just like we do here. We’ll find someplace we can all run together, and it’ll be bloody brilliant.’

Remus smiles faintly, and hums as he settles back against Sirius’s side– and despite the fact that they’re on top of the astronomy tower past midnight in the chill Scottish spring, Sirius suddenly feels very warm.

‘…So you don’t need to worry about the future, Re,’ he continues, trying to think of anything but the solid warmth of Remus against him, the brush of soft tawny curls against his cheek. 'It’ll be okay.’ He can’t actually promise that, of course– not with the war looming over them, increasingly impossible to ignore– but Sirius is confident that they’ll work something out. If they could design and create the Map with no outside help, and become Animagi at fifteen, they can manage this, too. 'As long as we all stick together, we’ll be fine.’

‘Yeah,’ Remus murmurs. 'I’ll think about it.’ He gives Sirius’s fingers a squeeze. 'Thanks, Pads. For everything.’

Sirius squeezes back, and thinks that nothing he does could ever be enough. He wishes he could give Remus the whole world, every star in the sky.

how am I feeling? – like a ball of anxiety that is constantly exhausted

how's school treating me? – not good :))))) let's keep it at that cause oH bOi anyway yea it causes a lot of the anxiety and the overwhelming feeling and throws me into sensory overload :) fun times :)

am i getting enough sleep? – i don't think i am but... could be worse, i don't think I'm going under 6 hours so that's good but still less than i should be getting :))) and that's for not being able to focus and procrastinating on everything and then just saying fuck it just watching videos cause i might as well ehehehe

am i eating and drinking good? – eating, yes. altho i do be eating lunch at like 16.15 but still i at least eat it yaknow and i usually have dinner at around 19.00 so it's fine. drinking? eh, i mean... yea i don't think I'm dehydrated so I'm good, it may not be well distributed throughout the day but I'm drinking yes

have i been taking time off? – yes and no. what gave you the inspiration/ideas for this au?

Ooh! I’m super glad that you asked!

(I’ll be putting this under a read-more, I’ll will be getting long-winded)

One rather big push actually came from somewhere rather unexpected.

(I’ll explain)

The original idea was actually born from another AU that I never published or wrote about anywhere around 2016 or so (just a little bit before the Human Zoo arc.) General idea was a future AU starring an adult Steven searching for the missing Crystal Gems in a bit of a Space Opera setting. Was meant to evoke a lot of Cowboy BeBop, Outlaw Star or Firefly kind of feel.

It was pretty nuts! Steven had a robot arm. Connie was a bounty hunting cyborg. Peridot wore an Elvis outfit. Everybody thought Pearl was dead and then it turns out she wasn’t.

(If anybody’s interested, I can just slap all my old art and notes up on my main tumblr @sharkman-jhones​)

Anyway, prolly one of my favorite things to happen in media is for a character to meet a future or alternate self. So I brainstormed ideas of Steven meeting this older self and Ego Trip, an animated movie where that exact thing happens, came to mind (along with a number of changes to make the story self contained.) Time came to brainstorm Old Steven and there was an evil version and a kindly little old man version I thought “…what if kindly little old Steven’s hiding a True Form?” (It was very video game-y, think a secret boss) and the words “Neo Pink Diamond” jumped into my brain.

By this point, Legs from Here to Homeworld was a thing…Probably. I don’t have set time frames. I know I was still working on the space opera versions around late 2017 through most of 2018 but after a few years of sitting on it all, I couldn’t work on how to keep the original AU compliant with canon anymore…but I still had the Neo Pink Diamond idea, and plenty of plot scraps that could be retooled and recycled.

Around the summer of 2019, I was kinda tired of having all these long-form ideas for AU/fanfic of various shows that I never shared online. I’ve drafted or drawn AU ideas for Inuyasha, Splatoon, Undertale, Avatar: the Last Airbender (I had a very short-lived comic called Avatar: Singularity that I stopped working on when I wasn’t getting any response on it and was too undisciplined and brain-goblin’d to make the time for.) I wanted at least one of them to, y’know, have something to show for itself.

It just so happened that @abel-quartz​ (who is practically my co-author on all of this) opened up for commissions around that time, so I commissioned a standalone story for it. I wrote up a general outline covering the themes I wanted, wrote up a timeline/history and things that I for sure wanted to happen and let him loose on it all. (Speaking of, if you haven’t read The Life, Death, and Life of Steven Universe, I recommend doing so. It’s the spiritual predecessor/pilot for this AU and what shaped this first chapter of the comic.)

Working on it with him was pretty great and I got all jazzed up to do more with it. I ended up putting together a story outline for the next few chapters of the comic. Thumbnailed and sketched the first pages. Started uploading in February and the rest has been history.

As for what’s shaping/inspiring me now? Lot of sci-fi in general. I’ve been a big 40k fan for a while (we’re not going super grimdark, don’t worry.) Loved the original Mass Effect games, as well as the Phantasy Star series. Dark Run by Mike Brooks was a good book and though it applied more to a rag-tag crew of space drifters, a lot of the political intrigue really appealed to me when it came to ideas for this AU. I kinda want to read more of the classic sci-fi like Dune or to watch tv/movies that’s more Star Trek style fare. Flying around in a big ship exploring space with a crew (…you know…for reasons.)

LMAO i did so much the past few months cfgvhbn I am gonna chill in December and January i think. Okay, so that project I said had been taking up all my time for the last few weeks?  It's finally done.  And here it is.

This probably merits a bit of explanation.  For a while I'd been working on a webseries... quite a long while actually, but after seeral false starts I started getting up weekly episodes as of the beginning of this year, and it seemed like I was finally on a roll and would be able to keep putting them out regularly.  And then, in mid-March, well, uh, yeah.  Given the situation with the COVID-19 coronavirus and the Safer at Home order, I wasn't able to keep recording new episodes.  I did have enough episodes I'd already recorded to keep uploading new episodes for a while, but I was going to run out. 

But then I thought of a way I could keep getting episodes up.  I couldn't record new live-action episodes, but I could do animated episodes.  That way I could ask the actors to record their voice-over roles from their own homes, so the social distancing guidelines and the Safer at Home order wouldn't be an issue.  I'd been teaching myself how to use Toon Boom Harmony for some time anyway; maybe it was time to start putting into practice what I'd learned.

So here it is.  My first animation.  Well... not counting some simple gifs and Flash animations I did years ago, but yeah, those don't really count.  Also I guess not counting the CG backgrounds to the live-action episodes, but (a) those were just backgrounds, not standalone animations, and (b) they were 3D animation rather than 2D, which is an entirely different beast.  Anyway, this is definitely my first time trying a digital puppet animation ("cutout" animation)—while I definitely prefer the look of frame-by-frame drawn animation, I decided to do puppet animation for this project because the time was limited and I figured it would be a lot faster.

Creating the rig, though, took a lot longer than I expected.  Not that I'm saying that using rigged animation was a mistake��as long as it took to set up the rig, I'm still sure that trying to hand-draw every frame would have taken even longer.  Still, before I do another episode I'm going to completely redo the rig.  There are a lot of things I should have done differently with the rig that would have made the animation a lot easier and faster that I didn't realize till I was actually trying to animate with it, and as long as it takes to create the rig, redoing the rig will save me time in the long run.

Not that that's the only thing I think I did wrong here, or the only thing I learned from doing this.  This was definitely a learning experience in many ways, and if I keep doing more episodes—and more animation—I hope to get better and faster at it.  Still, I guess for my first animation, it's... maybe not completely terrible?

Oh, by the way, given that I mentioned above that I'd planned to have the actors record their lines from their homes, you may wonder why there are in fact no lines recorded by actors in this animation.  (All the spoken lines are done by an online text-to-speech synthesizer.)  The reason for that is because in order to have actors record their lines (without violating SAG-AFTRA union policies), I need to have an agreement in place with SAG-AFTRA, the union for actors.  I'd had one before for the webseries, but it turned out that agreement only covered live action, and I'd need a new agreement for animation.  So I put in the paperwork for the new agreement—but given everything that's going on right now, SAG-AFTRA was backed up and taking longer to process the applications than usual.  So, since I didn't have the agreement in place and couldn't have actors record their dialogue, I decided for the sake of getting something done and online I'd come up with an episode I could do without dialogue (or in any case as it turned out without dialogue spoken by human actors).  Honestly, though, this is probably another matter that slowed me down, since not having dialogue meant that to have something going on in the episode I had to have more action, and action can be... hard to animate.  (Yes, having dialogue would mean I’d have to deal with lip-syncing, but that probably wouldn’t have been as difficult and time-consuming as all the action going on in this episode.)  Though in general, in writing this episode, I... didn't really give much thought to how hard or time-consuming it would be to animate particular elements I wanted to include.  Maybe I should have.

So.  I hope to have another episode up in a couple weeks, but it may be later.  (You can follow the channel on YouTube to see it when it comes out.)  I'm not going to start on it right away, though.  After spending several weeks straight focusing almost entirely on this, I need to take a break and do something else for a few days...  Still, it's good to have a finished animation under my belt, even if I know it's very far from perfect in a lot of ways.

Can you share your journey as a writer? How the idea of writing fanfics came into your mind? Do you have other own fiction too? Also how do start a particular fanfic? As in do you make notes, timeline or character sketches and stuff or do you just go ahead and write and then make notes on facts?

What an interesting question -- thank you for asking!  This is literally going to be a novel response (letting you know in advance LOL)

My journey as a writer... I guess I always wrote things down, started as a child when I wrote in a diary and then as I got older I wrote a little poetry, none of it very good (though I wrote a poem when I was twelve to describe the loss I felt when my Nana, my great-grandmother died, and my aunt read it aloud at her funeral).  I wrote a few short stories, just little things, prompts from teachers in school and such and then one day I decided I wanted to write my own story.  But funnily enough, it actually came about through fan fiction.  

I used to love this book series back when I was ten called Trash by Cherie Bennett, and I was completely in love with the characters Chelsey and Nick, and when Jazz claimed that she was pregnant and Nick was the father and it did ended on a cliffhanger and I didn’t have the next book, I remember writing my own version of what happened next -- God, looking back, it was probably terrible, I definitely don’t have it anymore.  Pretty sure the book series isn’t that great looking back at it now, but when I was ten, it was great! LOL.  I also wrote a side story for Demetrius and Karma, so even then I guess I branched off into subplots.  When I was fourteen, I started my own original series, which I am still currently working on and probably will be for the rest of my life if I’m honest -- it’s changed over the years, but the characters and my ultimate goal have stayed the same.

How did writing fanfiction come into mind?  

Well, with Harry Potter, it was because of my friend Chris.  We used to talk on the phone every single night after school for hours on end and after HBP came out and Harry and Ginny were FINALLY together only for him break up with her, I was so livid that I had to wait to find out what happened!  I remember Chris and I debated what would happen in the last book for ages and one day I must have ranted too much because he told me to go write my own story if I didn’t want to wait, so I did.  

I was seventeen and it was Harry Potter and the Prophecy Fulfilled: Which looking back at it now, I think it’s not exactly the greatest story lol and you can definitely see where I’ve improved since then.  After finishing HPPH, I ended up still having different ideas, all Hinny, and went on to write a few one-shots: Almost Too Late and Beautiful Mess.  Then I started writing A Different Beginning, which turned into my Beginning series: A Different Beginning, A New Beginning, Why Don’t We Just Dance?, Life Is Fickle Like That, Graduation Party, and The Reunion.  Those of you who have been reading my fanfiction since the beginning know that I originally posted the above stories on SIYE between 2005 and 2007 and had then completed (except for the second half of Life is Fickle onwards before Deathly Hallows was published).  I didn’t start posting on fanfiction.net until 2008 and only recently on Ao3.  Somewhere in between writing the Beginning Series, I also wrote a few other Hinny one-shots including The Greatest Gift, She Never Lets It Get To Her Heart, I Loved Her First (actually Arthur POV, which I later incorporated into the Beginning Series), The River (which is a standalone but also can be read as part of the Beginning Series), When the Sand Runs Out, and then the mini-series Padfoot’s Advice (Late Night Talks with Padfoot 1 & 2, Padfoot’s Advice, and Secrets from the Past).  Then I wrote the short Hinny/Romione story: The Trouble With Secrets and was inspired to write a Jily series, which I did with Crazy Little Thing Called Love, which could technically be a prequel to the Beginning Series as I kept some of the story similar.  I also wrote a Jily one-shot called Flowers and another Hinny one-shot called I Don’t Like Your Girlfriend.

I didn’t plan on writing any more fanfiction as university became busy, but then in 2017 I started writing these little Missing Moments for Harry and Ginny both before HBP and then during, and then after.  I just sort of compiled them on my computer for a while, wondering if it would turn into a story or not and then the idea came to me one day for A Second Chance after seeing some fan art of a five-year-old-Harry in sunshades and a leather jacket while riding a child’s motorbike next to Sirius in the same outfit and the next thing I knew, this story just pored out of me in February of 2018, I had the first twelve chapters written by March and another five by April.  I started posting the Missing Moments compilation, added a few more things including the Remus and Petunia scene from ASC and kept writing A Second Chance and in May, decided it was time to share it and uploaded the first twelve chapters.  

By the time I realized it was going to be a long one, I knew which characters I would sacrifice and how it would end, but how I was going to get there I still have no idea.  I’m not a writer who methodically plots.  I have a few general bullet points at the end of my current WIP chapter and that’s really it.  I add to it occasionally as I go, but mostly, I just write as I go along.  I can’t tell you how many chapters it will be or how long it will take me to get to the next section because frankly, it’s constantly changes.  I do not write in chronological order, which means I am often writing anywhere between 2-6 chapters at the same time depending on what scene has drawn my attention.  I might write something today that fits in the chapter I am currently working on and then by the time I finish writing other stuff, I realize that it doesn’t really fit there and stick it ahead into the next chapter or ten chapters from now.  I write where my heart takes me and where my creativity flows.  

I rarely ever work on more than one story at the same time, though I did write the short Newtina one-shot for my friend Heather as a Christmas present in 2018.  She requested it and I couldn’t write it, I found it so hard as I like them but it’s not characters I loved enough to write so I did it with a Luna spin-in, which I found helped.  I never take writing requests so this was very different for me, but I think it turned out cute: Say Love, ‘Cause We Got All the Time in the World.  I only recently uploaded it a month or so ago because I found it on my computer LOL.

Do you make notes, timeline or character sketches and stuff or do you just go ahead and write and then make notes on facts?

Once I am into the story, my notes are EXTREMELY detailed.  I do have a time line and separate documents for the following:

Character lists and family trees

General notes on: Political stuff, bills I’ve written, the sacred 28 document I wrote, tattoos mentioned, important dates, moon cycle dates of Remus’ life, classes I’ve invented (what they are about, who teaches them etc), textbook list per school year, notes on each Animagus form and information about their animals, actual time tables I wrote up Monday to Friday for Harry’s third/fourth, and fifth year, details of Zee and Tonks’ engagement rings, history and outline of Dante’s circles of hell with notes on how to incorporate into story, notes on pregnancy, character’s wands, geographic locations of characters, and any other little notes I think are important but don’t belong in the bullet points at the end of my current WIP chapter

History and ancestry of each family (from Harry Potter Lexicon, Pottermore, Harry Potter wiki, and my own personal creations).  This also includes manor information for Potter, Black, Longbottom, Nott, and Malfoy.

Hogwarts lay-out including stuff I’ve added or made up

Ministry of Magic departments and people (known and created)

List of spells (including ones I’ve made up and which chapter and which character introduced it to who)

List and pictures of Sirius’ motorbikes with information on each one

List of Pensieve memories and marauder moments (crossed out which ones I’ve shared already, some are written and waiting to be used and others just a general idea)

Terms and phrases from different languages I’ve used in the past

My playlist of songs I have mentioned in the story

An entire document dedicated to Operation FUVP including a Voldemort timeline which I have now shared in the story itself (also includes when and where each character found the Horcruxes)

A list of some of the recipes I mentioned, and 

I have a 72 page document that is literally just detailed chapter summaries to help me remember what the hell I’ve written LOL (also highlights introductions to new characters in a different font colour to help me find out when people were introduced).

Hi! I know that you’ve said that you won’t continue with the sequel planned for Wandering Bird, but I was wondering if I could inquire on what you might’ve written? It’s just, I really adore your fic; can’t get it out of my head actually (so I’m so sorry if I’m being insensitive!) You mentioned once that you were going to do a POV from Arthur Gwen and Morgana- does that mean they (Morgana and Gwen specifically) had an idea of Merlin’s fate? Could Arthur “see” Merlin during his adventures? Part 1

Part 2: (Again, I apologize for my questions-your story just has so many interesting plot points!!) How would Bonnie and Co interact/react to Arthur’s return? Why couldn’t Freya interact much with Merlin; Was it a lack of magic, interference or something else? Somewhat weird question: but did you have anything in mind for Merlin’s Vigil Night? (If he can get one poor dear). (Gushing continued in third ask I’m so sorry)

Part 3: I loved how you showed Arthur considering legal reforms before his death-and the Phoenix as the emblem? *Chef’s Kiss* Was the creation of the phoenix’s later on a reference to that? Random aside: I really adored how badass you made Merlin, without making him too edgy or dark, you know? Also I really loved the many prophecies/legends surrounding just Merlin as “Emrys”! I adore literally everything about Aithusa, and her final scene made me bawl (also your art is gorgeous!) You’re amazing!

Unfortunately, I no longer have my original outlines and the roughly 15k I’ve written due to my old laptop crashing, and it’s been 7 years (oh my gosh how) so I no longer remember the details. Which is too bad - I have several abandoned fics in my mother tongue, and I always uploaded summaries of what was supposed to happen to provide some kind of closure to readers. I can’t do that properly with Wandering, but I’ll try my best!

Feathers was inteded to be a series of 7 fics: 3 long main stories and 4 shorter (8-15k) standalone side-stories. The graphics are pretty much the only thing I still have  left x’D

You know this one, 75k of how Merlin spends those roughly 1500 years between the end of the show and Arthur’s rebirth. Then, the stuff that never got finished:

The Gwen POV side story, set during ch1 of Wandering. Focused on Gwen dealing with Arthur’s death, managing the kingdom and working on abolishing discrimination against magic users. Also getting together with Leon after a few years.

The Morgana POV one, at parts corresponding to ch1 and ch2 of Wandering. Honestly, I’m no longer sure about the details, but the early parts were supposed to explain and detail show canon, and then... I think I meant to bring her back in as a literal bird. With the life span of it, just keeping her consciousness, so she can watch what happens in the world. She probably watched over Aithusa, too, and Merlin, and IDK but the goal was to show her thoughts and eventually give her character justice and closure.

The Arthur POV one. He was kept in some kind of otherworldly, underwater palace-like place and could only interact with Freya, really, but he did get constant flashes of Merlin - especially where he was near Albion. This short was supposed to be very dream-like, as time works differenetly in that place. It’s kind of like when you’re half-asleep, y’know? So Arthur didn’t really live those 1500 years like Merlin did, but he followed his journey, in a way. When Freya “woke him up” at the end, they did have a conversation about it. He lost these memories when he was reborn. (But he still often dreams of water and a kind lady)

The next big one! Set in 2012, this would’ve started with Arthur & Merlin going to uni and “meeting each other” and ended with Arthur finally regaining his memories. Merlin kept away from him while Arthur was growing up, you see - aside from that one time when he learnt that by pure chance, Ray (who became a PE teacher) ended up being one of lil’ Chris/Arthur’s teachers. As old man Emrys, he got himself some history teaching shtick because he wanted to see how Arthur was doing, but he quickly realized that this is not going to work, what with him being in love with the man Arthur is going to become. xD So he left after a few months, and kept away from Arthur. (But kept pestering Ray with questions :D)

Anyway, when Arthur goes to uni (by this point, he exclusively goes by ‘Arthur’ btw, dropping Christopher) Merlin magics himself back into his eighteen year old form and gets enrolled in the same school. Agatha and Mike would have had prominent roles as basically Merlin’s sidekicks. Aggie is especially close with him, after him mentoring her about magic all her life.

Arthur has no memories either of his old life or about the years spent with Freya, so the dynamic at first is pretty much show S1. Most of the angst would have come from Arthur finally wanting to get together with Merlin but Merlin pulling away because there’s just too much Arthur doesn’t know; how is he supposed to be together with him when he’s hiding so much, lying so much? This Arthur is pure and free of the tragedies of the past, and maybe it’d be best if Merlin left him alone... But something must be happening - something the world needs Arthur for, if he slept through WWI and WWII but NOW fate decided to send him back...

Anyways, he would have gotten back his memories aroud the end of this instalment. Cue a lot of crying from Merlin’s part.

The last big one, a direct sequel to With Memories. A lot of recap and talking in the early parts, Merlin and Arthur reconciliating who they were in the past with who they are in the present and who they wanna be in the future. 

There was a Big Bad of some kind of malicious magical origin (not necessarily a person, but an “end of the world” kind of thing/entity. It was 2012 after all. Little did we knew the real shit was coming 8 years later It was revealed that Arthur had magic himself, plenty of it - he couldn’t use it, at all, but he wielded a lot of pure magic, maybe related to how he was basically marinated in magic-juice for over fifteen centuries and how his soul was pushed back into the world xD There was a lot of magical and dragon-related lore to be revealed. The Phoenixes came back to play a part in resolving the Big Bad, too. But it’s all very hazy. What I do remember is that to fix the Big Bad, Merlin AND Arthur had to hold their Vigil Night, in a way - not dying, god now, but both of them hand to give all their combined magic back to earth.  This resulted in the Big Bad no longer happening and Merlin losing his immortality =)

After figuring out their shit in the first half, they were pretty much together, btw. Learning each other in a new way. Arthur digged Merlin’s Phoenix emblem tattoo, that’s for sure. A lot of communication was needed, especially because it wasn’t easy for Arthur to understand Merlin’s grief (sometimes, Merlin looked so old despite the young form he wore; sometimes he felt ancient, and Arthur was a bit scared in his presence - not scared of Merlin, but scared of how to measure up to him, reach him, help him.) And Merlin had to understand that even with his old memories, Arthur wasn’t exactly that Arthur, the king - he had a life of his own in the present, a new identity, and it was unfair of Merlin to expect him to be the same. They no doubt talked a lot about Merlin’s lived experiences, his lost ones, Aithusa. (Merlin never stopped wearing the pendant made of Aithusa’s scale)

Happy end, of course :)

Well, that was a lot of vaaaague stuff, but hopefully gave you an idea? Bonnie wasn’t around too much, though I’m sure I’d have included some scenes with her. She probably didn’t met Arthur until Together Again. Aggie liked him fine but kept teasing him and she could be a bit harsh, what with her being so overprotective of Merlin. Mike and Arthur got along really well. Arthur was shocked when he was first fully introduced to the whole family and was met with his old PE teacher AND that brought up the fact Merlin attempted to teach him for a few months xDD 

Buuuuut.... this was still just 6, eh?

Last instalment, another side oneshot, and a prequel to the whole series. Kilgharrah’s POV. Set a few generation’s before Uther’s rein, elaborating on some of the lore and backstories revealed in Together Again. (all of which I no longer remember, rip) I know we’d have met an ancestor of both Merlin and Arthur through Kilgharrah: Aurelius Ambrosius, who does some good deed to Kilgharrah, and the dragon blesses him - after this, the man takes the name Pendragon. And Coel, who was a dragon lord, husband to Ystradwal high priestess. Coel had a cheerful and kind personality, and he was the first human Kilgharrah came to like. They became friends. Coel was supposed to be Merlin’s grandfather, I think. Kilgharrah and his mate were expecting their first egg to hatch when Uther’s purge started, and that was pretty much the end of this short =(

All I have left aside from these is some tidbits of dialogue from the single file on the sequels I have:

“You are. The same Merlin." Merlin nods. "The same Merlin who mucked out my horses and saved me countless times and magicked his way into my life.”

“I’m afraid, sire.”

The title comes without a conscious thought, and when he realizes, his heart twists and cracks.

Arthur just stares at him.

“So? Who are you guys, then?”

“I wasn’t lying about them. They are family. No! Gods, no, not like that,” he adds quickly upon seeing Arthur’s widening eyes.

“He’s our magical fairy godfather,” Mike and Aggie say in perfect union, completely straight-faced.

“The only times I was really miserable were the very first few hundred years, and later the roughly three centuries that followed Aithusa’s death. For the rest of the time, I wasn’t completely alone, and that... helped. A lot. But... it was hard. I hated how everyone I cared for withered away and died before my eyes, so I tried to keep people away for a long time. I was lonely, but that kept me safe from heartbreak. At least, that’s what I’d thought.

“But then I met Bonnie, and as I watched her grow up and start a family - a family that welcomed me - I realised how foolish I was for attempting to condone myself to a solitary life and deny myself the warmth of others’ love.”

Arthur wipes a hand over his face. “Owning a magical heritage but no apparent talent to use it... Just. Great. I’m a fucking Quibble!”

Rose/Victor! I haven’t gotten to writing their relationship and build-up, but from our plans and how we’ve designed Victor’s character to be, I’m excited.

MC’s biggest mistake:

Rose is probably more of an MC than the others, despite it being a Tyler/Ethan fanfic.

Her biggest mistake was probably refusing to give up on Carter. While he was her boyfriend, his actions toward her (and later, Jazzy) were unacceptable after she came out to him. She isn’t to blame at all, but it’s definitely the thing she regrets most.

Inspiration:

A webcomic on Webtoon called “Always Human.” The comic explores the events happening to the girls Sunati and Austen throughout the course of their relationship. Beautiful art, realistic problems (despite being set in a futuristic utopian society), representation, and well-written romance. I wanted to incorporate these factors into LaM to make it similar to a story I enjoyed very much that left an influence on me.

Underrated character appreciation:

Jazzy! Rose’s best friend. Even in the separate story where she’s one of the main set of characters, she’s still very overlooked. She’s very upbeat and friendly, with lots of knowledge on wlw pop culture and history!

Mark was already smiling, and nudged his head towards the arch. Tyler walked down the aisle and received praise from just about everyone sat in chairs. He high-fived Jack on his way to his place next to the officiant. The lady smiled at him, and he returned the gesture. She opened her book as Mark took his place next to Tyler, gazing over his friend’s tux and wiping off some dust quickly. Mark gave Tyler a thumbs-up, and Tyler couldn’t stop smiling. Now that he was actually out in front of the guests and standing where he was meant to be, his nerves relaxed. In fact, every thought he’d ever had in doubt of this marriage before that moment vanished, as soon as Ethan walked out.

Definitely Rose. Seeing as the story follows the changes through most of her life, there’s a big difference in her character comparing the first chapter she is introduced to the closing chapter, where she takes center stage.

My co-writer, Caroline. Though I’ve done most of the writing, Caroline and I brought the idea for this story to life together, creating a unique cast of characters such as Jazzy, Rose, Adrian, Marcus, their families, Victor, Rose’s mother Aaliyah, and Ethan’s uncle Zane. Without her, the story would not have been written in the first place.

Characters’ annoying habits:

Jazzy’s very short-tempered. Make one wrong move, anyone could get shouted at, lectured, maybe even a blow to the face.

Marcus feels a lot of self-pity and spite. He wishes his parents wouldn’t baby him so much just because he has cancer. This, later on, leads to him participating in multiple illegal activities to antagonize them.

Adrian grows to be more selfish as he gets older, even going out of his way to go into the military and disappear from Rose’s life out of the blue one day without telling her. He later regrets this.

Rose has plenty of autophobia to go around. After her mother gave her up to the orphanage at a young age and Carter’s abuse towards her in her late middle school years, followed by Adrian’s sudden leave after high school, she always fears being alone or abandoned by the people she cares about.

Tyler and Ethan both never seem to recover from the grief of their first child’s loss. This makes them closed off to people who ask about the incident, and could sometimes bring them back to their depressive state.

Testing converter

LibreOffice is available on all major platforms and has an active community. It's not active as new-hot-js-framework-active but still with plenty of good read and support. You can get your copy from the download page. Be a good user and go with up-to-date version. You can always downgrade in case of any problems and feedback on latest release is always appreciated.

On macOS and Windows executable is called soffice and libreoffice on Linux. I'm on macOS, executable soffice isn't available in my PATH after the installation but you can find it inside the LibreOffice.app. To test how LibreOffice deals with your files you can run:

In my case results were more than satisfying. The only problem I saw was a misalignment in a file when the alignment was done with spaces, sad but true. This problem was caused by missing fonts and different width of 'replacements' fonts. No worries, we'll address this problem later.

While reading unoconv issues I've noticed that many problems are connected due to the mismatch of the versions. I'm going with Docker so I can have pretty stable setup and so I can be sure that everything works.

Let's start with defining simple Dockerfile, just with dependencies and ADD one DOCX file just for testing:

Running LibreOffice as a subprocess

We want to run LibreOffice converter as a subprocess and provide the same API for all platforms. Let's define a module which can be run as a standalone script or which we can later import on our server.

Required arguments which convert_to accepts are folder to which we save PDF and a path to the source file. Optionally we specify a timeout in seconds. I’m saying optional but consider it mandatory. We don’t want a process to hang too long in case of any problems or just to limit computation time we are able to give away to each conversion. LibreOffice executable location and name depends on the platform so edit libreoffice_exec to support platform you’re using.

subprocess.run doesn’t capture stdout and stderr by default. We can easily change the default behavior by passing subprocess.PIPE. Unfortunately, in the case of the failure, LibreOffice will fail with return code 0 and nothing will be written to stderr. I decided to look for the success message assuming that it won’t be there in case of an error and raise LibreOfficeError otherwise. This approach hasn’t failed me so far.

Uploading files with Flask

Converting using the command line is ok for testing and development but won't take us far. Let's build a simple server in Flask.

We'll need few helper function to work with files and few custom errors for handling error messages. Upload directory path is defined in config.py. You can also consider using flask-restplus or flask-restful which makes handling errors a little easier.

The server is pretty straightforward. In production, you would probably want to use some kind of authentication to limit access to uploads directory. If not, give up on serving static files with Flask and go for Nginx.

Important take-away from this example is that you want to tell your app to be threaded so one request won't prevent other routes from being served. However, WSGI server included with Flask is not production ready and focuses on development. In production, you want to use a proper server with automatic worker process management like gunicorn. Check the docs for an example how to integrate gunicorn into your app. We are going to run the application inside a container so host has to be set to publicly visible 0.0.0.0.

Setup II

Now when we have a server we can update Dockerfile. We need to copy our application source code to the image filesystem and install required dependencies.

In docker-compose.yml we want to specify ports mapping and mount a volume. If you followed the code and you tried running examples you have probably noticed that we were missing the way to tell Flask to run in a debugging mode. Defining environment variable without a value is causing that this variable is going to be passed to the container from the host system. Alternatively, you can provide different config files for different environments.

Supporting custom fonts

I've mentioned a problem with missing fonts earlier. LibreOffice can, of course, make use of custom fonts. If you can predict which fonts your user might be using there's a simple remedy. Add following line to your Dockfile.

Now when you put custom font file in the font directory in your project, rebuild the image. From now on you support custom fonts!

Summary

This should give you the idea how you can provide quality conversion of different documents to PDF. Although the main goal was to convert a DOCX file you should be fine with presentations, spreadsheets or images.

Further improvements could be providing support for multiple files, the converter can be configured to accept more than one file as well.

The code is an expansion/contraction of python-docx2txt (Copyright (c) 2015 Ankush Shah). The original code is mostly gone, but some of the bones may still be here.
