hi!! recently fell in love w the show & have yet to read the books (though ik most of the major beats) could u give some explanation on why people see moscovitch saying domestic violence is not outside of lestat’s evil is a mischaracterization/her not getting the character?
I thought him trying to be better than magnus and his father but still failing to break out their patterns, still emulating their abuse & the patriarchy in spite of his immense love for louis + claudia was great and his violence in that vein seemed to me as super in line with his reasoning and accurate to his character. why do ppl disagree w the moscovitch quote? ty for ur thoughts <33
This is what she said:

That is … a disturbing display of not understanding that book.
TtotBT has rape scenes, yes. But those are not done from any kind of intentional or “evil“ place. “Range of his evil“ implies an intent to use that evil on others. It implies that he is evil… something that Lestat tries to convince himself of in that book (and which fails).
I‘m not going to go into an in-depth analysis of the book now. We have time during the hiatus - I would recommend reading it. It deals with body dysmorphia, suicide attempts, guilt and pain, and yes, has a body thief. And Claudia’s ghost. And some very charged Loustat scenes.
The show has amplified the cycles of abuse, yes, but it is mostly the fandom which keeps harping on patriarchy actually. Because this isn’t actually representative of Lestat‘s character. Which we will likely get to see quite clearly in s3. And remember, s1 and 2 were (intentionally!) distorted and edited, to present Lestat as a monster (Jacob‘s words). We now know, as per 2x08(!) (though that was clear for me in 1x07 actually when we saw Louis screaming over Lestat), that what we saw was not the (whole) truth.
But to get back to Hannah - her not understanding the underlying arcs of the books is a disturbing sign of them adding these things for shock value. I‘m happy to be proven wrong, maybe she didn’t want to give her game away and kept it “current“ commentary, like Assad always does, too, for example. (Meaning, though they know more they only comment on what is currently known in the episodes - not what will later turn out to be the truth).
I know there are big big metas being written on Lestat and abuse and patriarchy and what not - but most of those fail to take that step back and separate the (very much existing) meta level (of the show making that commentary) from the actual show in-universe level of this being an edited, and influenced tale that was used to present Lestat as a monster.
In combination with Hannah (apparently) not getting TtotBT this does not bode well for what’s to come, imho, but she’s also responsible for other scenes, so…. we‘ll see.
EDIT: further reading on this:
