You Never Know

I apologize to y’all for two things: lateness and the fact I forgot my stupid notebook that had everyone’s name that wanted to be tagged. So within the past two weeks, who have asked me to tag you: I am so sorry. I forgot my notebook in Tokyo while I was packing and cleaning to come back to Seattle.

I hope this part makes up for my shittiness. If it doesn’t, I don’t know what else to do. Trying to write more stories but being with family kind of makes that hard.

You didn't think it was possible. That a mere object, like a baseball bat cover in nails, could ever make anyone attractive. Yet it worked with Steve. You watched Steve swinging his bat outside in the front yard of the Beyer's. He had gone home immediately after Mike had told you about Dustin. Steve was impatient, wanting to go and face Eight but you hand manage to talk him out of it.

You left the house to stand by Steve, gently placing your hand on his shoulder. It had caused Steve to stop his swinging, looking over at you slightly, out of breath. "We'll get him back," You softly said, moving your hand in his open one. "Eleven is tracking him down." Steve let out a sigh, fully turning to you with concern written all over his face.

"What if they already hurt him?" Steve asked, his eyebrows furrowing together, "What if they have him with a gun to his head?"

"Steve, Steve," You promptly shushed him, capturing his cheeks in your hands. You rubbed them, giving him a slight smile, "We will get Dustin back, unharmed." Steve nodded his head, dropping his bat to his side. He was able to wrap his arms around your waist. He pulled you close to him, burying his face in your neck, letting you comb your fingers through his hair. You felt your neck tickle a little, knowing Steve was mumbling something to you but you still couldn't hear. You pulled away from him to look him straight in the eye.

"I love you," He spoke once more, having a smile tug on the corner of his mouth. Just hearing those words again made your cheeks to heat and your heart to pound.

"I love you too," You couldn't hold back your smile as he couldn't with his. He loved hearing those words said back to him just as much as you did. Knowing that he finally had you, it was everything that he needed in life. He gave your hand a tug, pulling you close once again, leaning down to brush his lips against yours. You shut your eyes, eagerly waiting for his lips to connect but timing was everything.

"She found him!" You heard Mike scream. He rushed outside, coming up next to you and Steve, already apart, pulling on both your arms. "We need to get him!"

"Whoa," Steve raised his hand to silence the anxious friend, "We can't just go in with no plan at all." You nodded in agreement.

"We should at least take three cars," You proposed. At first, Steve accepted until his brain finally put your words together: he then quickly objected.

"Mine, Jonathan and ―"

"Mine." You finished his sentence. Mike had gone back inside the Beyer's house to collect everyone to get a plan laid out. Leaving you and Steve to have your dispute alone. "It only makes sense, Steve. It will be harder for them to catch us if there are three cars and driving my dad's, I know I can outdrive them."

"There's a chance you'll get hurt." Steve countered. He looked off to the side, getting frustrated with your case. He had finally got you to confess your feelings to him and if anything happened to you; he would only blame himself. "We're fine with just two cars." Steve looked over at you, seeing that you had crossed your arms.

"You need to trust me, Harrington." You barked, "I know you're already on edge with Dustin being taken but you need to trust me on this. I can drive well with my dad's car, he taught me and if you understood how he drives: you would have faith."

"It's not that I don't have faith in you, Y/N," Steve corrected you, waving his arms out, "I have complete faith in you." Steve grew quiet, taking in a deep breath in order to calm himself down. He looked back up at you, rubbing his nose lightly, "I just can't lose you after I just got you."

You reached out, grabbing his hand into yours; giving it a squeeze to comfort him. "Wait until you see me beat your ass in driving," You joked. It caused him to lighten up, laughing lightly. He knew he couldn't change your mind the moment you set it. He nodded once more before pulling you in to give you a warm hug. He managed to sneak in a kiss. Lightly brushing his lips against yours, placing his hand on your cheek before fully pressing them. He nipped at the bottom of your lip, causing you to smile into the kiss.

"I say that we have at least one of the middle schoolers in the back seat of each car," You explained, having everyone before you; listening to your strategy. "That way Eight won't know who is with us. When we grab Dustin and drive away, she will only be able to play that stupid mind trick to those she already saw. Making each car have one person in the clear to be able to tell us what is real in front of us."

"I'll go with you, Y/N," Max piped up, walking over to your side as Eleven approached you as well. You saw the look on Steve's face: worried reappeared. Steve stood there uncomfortably. Having Eleven in your car would be sure to put a target on you. Their van would case you more than anyone else. He bit back his tongue, not wanting to have another argument with you. He had to have trust in you if he wanted a relationship.

"Me too." Eleven spoke softly, grabbing your hand.

"El," Mike spoke up, taking a step forward but stopping when he realized everyone's eyes were on him, "Just be safe." He quietly added before going back towards his sister. You got an agreement with everyone, heading over to Steve's car so that he could give you a ride home.

"You sure about this plan?" Steve asked you once more, grabbing your hand interlacing with his own. You used your other hand to rest it on top of his holding your other hand.

"Yes," You validated, "We got this. Our group is a bunch of badasses." Steve laughed, still feeling anxious. It wasn't because of the situation with Eight but it was the fact that Billy Hargrove was standing in your driveway. You saw Billy, turning to look back at Max, who had sunken in her seat. "Don't worry. I'm grabbing my dad's keys and then we're out."

Steve pulled in to the driveway, alerting Billy. The moment Billy saw you then looking over to Steve, his eyes grew in anger; trying his best to hide it but it didn't work. You looked over at Steve, giving him a kiss on the cheek, "I'll see you by the cliff." You smiled at him, rubbing his arm before looking back at Eleven and Max, "Head to the car. It won't take me long."

You got out of Steve's car, walking past Billy to your front door. Billy called out to you and you tried to brush him off but the moment he grabbed your arm, making you turn to face him: you had to face reality. "Are my eyes tricking me or did I just see you kissing Harrington?" Billy growled. You ripped your arm away from his grasp, heading to the front door of your house.

"So we can mark you not being blind off the list." You acknowledged, heavy on the sarcasm. You looked around the house, seeing your father in the den reading the paper. "Hey, dad, is it alright if I take the BMW?" You asked. Your father taught you how to drive in this car but it was still a child to him.

Your father lowered his paper, having his eyes set on yours. "Why, Y/N/N?" He questioned.

"A few of us want to catch a movie but we don't have enough seats and I offered to drive. Please?" You knew you could get your father to cave by using your puppy dog eyes, pouting your lips slightly. Your father gave a deep sigh, lifting his paper once more.

"Just be safe." He said. You grabbed the keys, closing the door behind you but you just remembering that Billy was there. You rolled your eyes, shoving your way past him but he wouldn't leave.

"So the moment you leave me, you fuck Harrington?" Billy yelled. It caused you to stop, rotating on your heel to shoot a glare at him.

"Excuse me?" You snapped, "I have done none of that unlike you fucking every girl you see while you were seeing me!" You paused, shaking your head and heading back to your car, "I don't have time to waste my breath with an idiot like you, Hargrove." The moment you felt Billy grab your wrist, it was one quick motion that you turned; fist up to land a punch on his cheek.

The time it took Billy to collect what had happened, you had gotten in your car. Max in the back and Eleven in the front, to leave; heading towards the cliff where they had once found Will's fake dead body.

During the car ride was silent, the young teens didn't know what to say to you after seeing your interaction with Max's older brother. "I should have listened to you," You finally spoke, quickly looking in the rearview mirror to see Max laying down. "Your brother really is a dick."

Max smiled, "That was a good punch though." Max watched your hand shift to another gear, amazed at your driving ability, "Where did you learn how to drive a stick?"

"My dad." You answered, "He said that everyone should know how to drive one or else you're a dumbass." The look on Max's face was shocking, she didn't know how to take in the bit of information you told her making you laugh, "You have to excuse my father, he was a captain in the Army. So his humor may be a little dry compared to others."

"Is this why you offered to drive?" Max asked.

"Yeah. When Eleven mentioned they drove a van, I knew that driving this car would be much faster against theirs. That's why she's with me and not with anyone else." You explained. You pulled up to the edge of the cliff, seeing Jonathan's car and Steve's had already beaten you there. Before your eyes, you saw Eight and her goons holding Dustin down to his knees: scared.

Eight's eyes matched with yours, then seeing that Eleven was in the car with you. You got out, leaving Max in the back seat where she made sure she wasn't in view. Eight tilted her head slightly, pleased with the outcome she got just by holding one of Mike's friend hostage.

"You're very popular, Jane." Eight pointed out, waving her finger at everyone, "Bu enough with trying to be normal, Jane. These people will never understand you like we do―like I do." Eleven moved closer to you, grabbing a hold of your hand; shaking her head in dismissal.

"Look, Betty and Archie did know who Jane was." Axel crackled, whipping out a pocket knife, pointing it towards you and Steve, "I feel as we are owed an explanation."

"Bite me." You spat. Having Axel jump a little in excitement, turning to his leader.

"Oh, let me have some fun with her," Axel's eyes shifted to look at you, gawking at your body, "I know we would have a hell of a good time together."

Steve's hand balled into a fist, the anger building up in him as he regripped his bat. Eight raised her hand, hushing Axel's remark, "Now, we're here to get Jane back not to have fun." Eight paused, looking over at Steve and seeing his bat. Eight seemed to look at Steve longer, you watched Steve; having his expression turn into what looked like heartbreak.

"Steve?" Nancy called out to him, trying to get a response. Steve shook his head lightly, his lips slightly parted.

"Y/N?" Steve called out. You pushed your brows together, trying to take a step forward but Eleven had stopped you with a tug on your hand. Your heart broke, not knowing what was happening to Steve or what he was seeing.

"I'm right here, Steve!" You yelled, trying to snap Steve out of Eight's hold. "What you're seeing isn't real!" Your heart sank when you saw a tear fall from Steve's eyes. You turned to see Eight and her gang laughing, enjoying the moment, "Quit it!" You yelled.

"Hand over Jane and I will." Eight said, cracking a smirk.

"Steve," Jonathan called out, grabbing onto Steve's shoulder, giving it a shake, "Y/N is here and she's fine."

"You―you killed her." Steve shuttered, his voice cracking. He placed both hands on the bat, gripping it tight. "You killed Y/N!" Steve screamed.

The illusion stopped when you had thrown a rock at Eight, catching her off guard and letting Steve go from her powers. Eight rubbed her head, locking her eyes on yours and you knew instantly that it was a mistake.

"It's not real," You told yourself. You shut your eyes, repeating, "It's not real." When you opened your eyes, you turned to where Steve was standing but only now, Nancy was with him. Your mouth opened when you saw Nancy's hand in with Steve's. You felt your heart in your throat, shaking your head to try and get the image out, "It's not real!"

"But it is," You heard Steve's voice. It made you open your eyes to see Nancy now hugging Steve's side, her hand on his chest as she leaned into him. "I can't believe you thought I liked you." Steve chuckled. You lightly shook your head, not wanting to believe the words that he was saying.

"It's not real," Your voice had gone quieter, showing that you were believing the hallucination that was before you. You let out a cry when you saw Nancy locking her lips with Steve. You clutched your shirt, over your heart, as it pounded against your chest.

You were shaken, you looked at your surroundings until you went to what was in front of you. Steve was grabbing onto your cheeks making you focus on him. You faintly heard him calling out to you. You zoned back, in reality, hearing Steve more clearly, "Y/N, it's not real!" He roared, trying to get you back.

Your body shook, not knowing how to react but your eyes searched Steve's face; covered in sweat. "Steve," You cried out, your voice weak.

"I'm here." Steve assured you, brushing the fallen hairs out of your face, "I'm here, Y/N."

"Isn't that cute," Dottie squealed. It made you remember where you were turning to back to the gang. Steve stepped away from you to head back to his car.

The older man grabbed Dustin by the hair, pulling his head back to expose his neck openly. Your eyes widen when you saw him push a knife across Dustin's neck, bringing the boy into tears. You all had shifted your positions, in a position where you were ready to fight if you had to. Eight had her hand outreached, towards Eleven's direction.

"Come on, Jane. If you come with me, your little friend here lives." Eight demanded, but Eleven shook her head. Eight rolled her hand up, displeased with her sister's choice. "Fine then."

Before another word could come out of her mouth, Eleven used her powers to push back the gang; leaving Dustin to be alone. "Dustin, come on!" Lucas yelled, motioning his friend to bolt it into a car.

You retreated back into your car, shifting the gear once again and speeding down the dirt road. You watched in your mirror the gang getting up and running into their van and as you predicted, hunting after you. Your eyes enlarge seeing dirt and rocks fall off from a cliff, "Max, is the road clear?" You yelled.

"Clear!" Max confirmed, making you shift into a higher gear and drive through the illusion. You continued to head down the road, making sure that they got further and further in your rearview mirror.

"I think we're in the clear," You informed, "But I'm not taking any chances." You shifted once more, turning one more corner. You saw a group of deer blocking the street, you didn't have much time to react, "Max, real or fake?" You yelled.

"I see them too!" Max said, panicking. You didn't know if this was Eight's doing, finally figuring out that Max was in the car or if it was real. You had no clue what to do, you were speeding at an unbelievable rate. You placed your arm in front of Eleven turning your wheel, causing your car to spin out.

You shut your eyes waiting for an impact but when you drove through the deer, it was too late to turn your car back around and the wheel had lost its grip on the road. It had gone off the cliff, sending you, Max and Eleven down with it.

recovery

recently, there was a major fire in my city. a little before the fire happened, i went through probably the lowest point in my life i’ve been in thus far. it culminated into one night of forcing myself to break down a number of walls and fake fronts i put up around me. these stood for about 5 years.

during that 5 year period i lied to myself and tried to trick myself into thinking i was something else so i could fit in with my rapidly changing friend groups, both online and in real life. i started distancing myself from a number of things, including shows, interests, and friends. i pushed away mlp for fear that my friends who were now falling out of it would ditch me if i were still into it. i pushed away my desire to learn music because the relationship between my brother and i only got worse as high school went on. i pushed away old friend groups for reasons so stupid i dont remember anymore.

instead of doing videos for fun and my own enjoyment, i started making them with the intention of becoming popular. i was never good at those and i wasn’t willing to learn to make myself better because i only wanted the success. the worst part about this was the fact that i did it for so long i managed to make myself believe that this was what i wanted, to be making low effort gaming videos on youtube well past its peak. because that’s what I thought I was going to “make it” doing. it should be noted i pushed away a group of youtuber friends before this, who may have been able to talk sense into me.

to this day i have only met one other person who makes videos.

fast forward to a few months ago. back in june, i started a new job, the one im currently working, doing lifeguarding at a pool. in july, my friends and i did our annual trip to anime expo, and aside from some incidents it was fun. i went on vacation with my family to arizona, and we saw a number of beautiful sights. i enjoyed it a lot.

however, this is the end of the fun.

anime expo, as always, brought me the panic of being around so many people. it isn’t the volume of people however, im relatively comfortable in a crowd. its the idea that i can look around in any direction and see people probably way happier and in better places in life than i am. look one way, i see a group of attractive people in cosplay that’s way better than mine. look the other way, i see a group of friends all laughing and clearly have shared interests, unlike my friends where we all have kinda splintered tastes so we don’t spend all the time together at conventions.

i spent a good amount of the convention wandering it with my friend mike. we went as Haru and Rin from Free, him being Haru, me being Rin.

around that time i was having major self image issues. i gained a good amount of weight the months prior, and i couldn’t lose it no matter what i tried, and consistently going to the gym, doing workouts given to me by professionals showing me no change killed my motivation. i couldn’t get myself to even go anymore come june.

so when mike was stopped by 10+ people (i stopped counting after a while) for pictures and to compliment him on his cosplay, meanwhile outright ignoring me, i started feeling like my image issues weren’t just “in my head” like i’d been told. despite this i tried my best to ignore it and move on. except i couldn’t.

the other cosplay i did was a crossplay of Mako Mankanshoku from Kill la Kill. I actually had the right length/hair color for Mako’s hair, so I saved money on a wig and got it cut like hers. the hair actually looked fine in context of the cosplay, however the cosplay in the context of anything was atrocious.

i couldn’t fit into the seifuku i bought, despite being sure to buy a size much larger than what you’d expect. trying to ignore my brain telling me im a fat fuck i improvised with a white shirt and a light blue neckerchief. with the wrong color shoes, basic shirt, neckerchief, basic skirt, and my hair cut instead of a wig, i was the definition of awful cosplay.

i hyped up finally being able to crossdress in public to myself for months. i’ve wanted to crossdress publicly since i was 15. at no other convention in the past did i have the courage. i got rid of pretty much all body hair, and upon finally being able to do so, i thought it was everything i wanted.

looking in the mirror showed me i was nothing more than an ugly fatass trying to look cute. i was the fucking person people at conventions take candid photos of and post on tumblr to make fun of. im sure im gonna one day come across a picture of me in that “cosplay” accompanied with some text about how embarrassing i was.

so with now both my cosplays fun sucked out of them by myself, the rest of the convention went on, but i couldn’t fully suppress the idea that i was unhappy.

the arizona trip i’ll save for another post, it’s a complete offshoot with it’s own backstory.

these are nowhere near all of the events i feel caused enough problems for what happens later, just the major ones. also there’s no way i can write every single thing that’s happened to me and contributed to my sad demeanor over the last 21 years.

after that though, the rest of the summer is a blur, i dont remember anything i did, and i don’t remember starting school again. i just know i’ve been going for almost 16 weeks now.

for some reason, a lot of things that didn’t use to bug me have been bugging me. stuff that I thought i’d grown accustomed to seeing, like the ever poisonous anti-male rhetoric that this site likes to parade. i’ve been on tumblr since i was like 13, i’ve seen it, i should be used to it and know to ignore it, right?

i guess not. every post i see related to something meant to make me feel shitty for being a guy takes another chip at me throughout the day. despite my best efforts i can’t forget them.

i just don’t have the energy to put up with stuff anymore, and it really feels like im out of energy to put into caring about things. i’ve been feeling like this since the beginning of the above five year period of not knowing why i wasn’t happy with what i was supposed to be happy with.

eventually we get to one saturday at work. two pools are being used for an event, the third is being rented out for a kids birthday party. im on the tower supervising the party when my best friend kaylie comes to rotate me. we chat for a sec, and as i start to walk off, she says my name. i turn around and she points at the water. no more than 3 feet from where im standing, two kids are wrestling in the water. except they weren’t wrestling for fun, they were wrestling to get on top of one another and drowning each other in the process. mind you, this is the deepest part of the pool and it’s only like 4 1/2 feet deep. I slide in, hoist up both of them, and launch into the caring procedure bullshit.

i get them out, tell kaylie im going to get a towel, and eventually other guards start asking me what happened. all of the sudden people are toting me as being a hero for making my first rescue withing my first year. you’d think that’s something to be proud of, right?

yeah you’d think that.

i felt nothing. all i had was that i was doing my job, and if it were like ten seconds earlier kaylie would’ve got them. i didn’t do anything special.

of course that ended up as a conflict in my mind, and on the way home i bought alcohol and spent the night drinking alone.

fast forward a few more days, and i get home from work. it wasn’t a particularly hard day, or any major thing happened, just a lot of small little things that chipped away at my patience, a few comments made by coworkers that really weren’t asked for, and this and that ultimately led to me driving home at the end of the night upset.

i get home, and think to myself im going to unwind with some video games. i dont remember what happened or what i was playing, but some major thing happened that led to me calmly turning off the game and turning to my computer to stare at it for the next two hours, only occasionally clicking to something new.

nobody tells you what it’s like to break. partly because, they cant. the way i see it everyone breaks differently. every breakdown i’d had up until that point had been loud, angry, and full of jerky motions through teary, blurred eyes. they were like someone kicking over something i was making in one fell swoop.

this time it felt like i watched someone pick away at the foundation until it all started to slide down like sand.

i broke, at first without tears, questioning what i was doing at that moment, and what i was doing in general. nothing made sense. my head couldn’t keep a thought for a moment. i felt like my chest was caving in. i didnt end up eating anything that night. i honestly can’t describe how i felt and what i did, it was such a blur.

i started going on a nostalgia scavenger hunt. something i had seen recently drove me to want to search out the mlp meetup group i used to be a part of. i found pictures of me and my friends at different events back in 2011, 2012, and i started doing what i can only describe as motioning a whimper. as in, whatever you picture when you think of whimpering, only without sound.

I saw pictures of me being happy, truly happy. i hadn’t been truly happy in the last 5-6 years since these pictures were taken. at least not for more than the occasional time.

as if on queue, a friend from one group of friends i changed myself to fit in with messaged me. i asked him if he wanted to take a trip with me, and i spilled everything.

i confessed to being a liar, a poser, a shitty person who couldn’t even tell his friends that he wasn’t everything he said he was. i told him at one point in my life i had actual ambition and ways to achieve success outside of being the scummy piece of shit i’d become when i became friends with them. (please dont misunderstand, they’re good people, i just had a warped sense of what i needed to do to be their friend back then)

he let me angrily type and rant and have a major breakdown to him without interruption for almost an hour, and finally he paused me and started trying to talk me through this.

after he gave me his piece on the matter, i turned to another one of my best friends, jacob. jacob was one of the irl friends i went to meetups with, and we’ve been friends since middle school. we’re closer than anyone else i know i’d bet, even closer than kaylie and i.

because of time differences, our conversation lasted the next two days, basically telling him everything, that i wasn’t happy with myself, that i haven’t been happy with anything for a long time. the only thing that mattered to me in his response was that nothing was different between us. he said he was going to a therapist soon, and said that i should try it. i have not, and i dont plan to for fear of what i might find out. still, everything he said i took to heart and i thank him for it.

at this point, i decided that i could fix all of this, that i could make myself someone i’d like to be. i was going to work hard and no matter what i wasn’t going to break like that ever again. nothing was going to stop me, no matter the odds.

someone up there must love testing my patience.

a week later, the fire happened. within the span of an hour i had gone from coming home from a test, to helping my mom with the recycling, to rushing home because the sky over our house was brown. the next few hours was me running on no food, a sweaty, ash-covered mess, to get everything of importance out of the house. everything that was too hard to replace was taken. as painful as it was it meant leaving behind just about everything that had value to me, as i took only the things that mattered in a worldly view, not a personal view.

God listened to my prayers that day, and the fires burned half a mile from my house, but no closer. The trail i walked a thousand times growing up was no more. it’s about 4 houses down from mine, to give perspective. everything was black and soot, trees stood with burn marks and missing leaves. The creek was dried up. everything is a mess. i walked out and took pictures of it a few days after, just for memory sake.

that day was a test to see whether or not I was actually going to keep my word. i didn’t break that day, despite wanting to often, and i did what was most important for my family.

since then, i’ve shuffled around a lot of different aspects of my life. a lot of things are changing, and im not comfortable with a lot of them. however, these are good changes. i have to make myself uncomfortable to be able to find what i belong to once again.

and i hope and i pray that this is going to be the time i prove to myself i can break out of this

BFF's Mom Murderer Anon here! Thank you for answering my question! I forgot to add that Mom and BFF went into hiding bc Mom cant stay human (theyre dragons) and they don't know if BFF will lose the ability to stay human. But MC doesn't know this. She just knows there's a dragon that needs slaying. Later in the 2nd book Mom gets brought back by MC bc she thinks it would help heal their relationship. Would having Mom back hinder the progress BFF's made in dealing with the trauma of losing her? 1/5

2/5 MC (by her own admission) is kind of dull. She doesn’t see the point of relationships and would rather be home studying. BFF indoctrinated her into their group anyway (they’re trying to be the next Mystery Inc), and over BFF’s disappearance MC finds out it’s nice to have friends even if she’s kind of a dunce at it. On their first case MC is persuaded into making a deal with this man FU, who helps her in exchange for a) anonymity, and b) her apprenticeship. He uses MC’s feelings for BFF to

3/5 convince her to slay the dragon hiding in the caves bc he needs something Mom has. Thruout the book the tasks he gives MC to do (there’s only 3) slowly escalate in scale, and this is the last. He even gives her the weapon. He gets his item, she gets her friend back. By this point MC has grown to love BFF (absence makes the heart grow fonder) and she sees no problem with this. So she gathers up her team and goes straight into the cave. (Also this takes place in like… 2011)

4/5 A little more on BFF: she had no idea of her dragon heritage until Mom couldn’t keep it up anymore. They love each other to bits, but she thought they were just going thru the throes of her being angsty. It was love at first sight when she met MC even if MC didn’t know it. As tough as she is, BFF doesn’t know how to deal with all these things that are all happening at once other than lashing out or shutting down.

5/5 Until BFF disappears MC just let the group drag her wherever they wanted with only mild complaints. But once BFF and BFF’s Mom are reported missing, MC decides to take a chance. She steps up and does what BFF would: she does her damnedest find her. And she does… but it’s bittersweet. Even tho MC did the actual killing, would the other girls being there at all also trigger BFF?

To answer your question, I’m going to get super personal because mine is literally the only story I know that relates to ‘someone getting brought back from the dead and trauma survivor reaction.’

Not that anyone I know has figured out resurrection.

But basically, at some point in my childhood I had a best friend with abusive parents. We lost contact. A few years later, I received a letter from her talking about how she was going to join the military because she was going to either die or break the cycle. She was going to -get out-

A few years passed. Somewhere between there and college, I decided she was dead. At the time, I thought I had evidence. I thought someone had told me. I thought someone had shown me an obituary. Something had happened and I Knew she was dead. It was probably a dream or a misremembered conversation.

Overall, something that … I grieved. I did, I grieved. She’d meant a lot to me and she was -gone-. But not something affecting my day to day because she’d been out of my life for a few years. Still, something I remember talking to a few friends about. One even offered to go with me to the grave and I remember confessing I didn’t know where exactly she’d been buried. Out of state, probably, because she’d moved.

Except it all came to a head when one day she sent me a friend request on facebook.

I thought I was having a psychotic break. Someone that I Knew was dead was trying to talk to me. I vomited. I drank a lot. I spent the next week In Crisis because the option ‘you misremembered and she’s been alive’ was not something that occurred to me. I obsessively started looking for her obituary online, I doubted my own reality a lot.

My mother called. The girl had reached out to her. Wanted to meet up with the family. So they did.

I never went because despite the fact that I know now that she is alive and that I’d just… misbelieved that she was dead- I don’t trust what my brain will do if I were to see her in person.

Now, maybe your character lives in a world where ‘coming back from the dead’ is more common and it wouldn’t cause such a dramatic reaction.

If it isn’t common?

She might think someone is playing a trick on her.

She might be extremely clingy, not wanting to let her mother out of her sight. If she does, her mom might die again. If she does, someone might replace her mother. If she does-

She might want nothing to do with this version of her mother. Because that can’t be her mother, she saw her mother die.

She might struggle with trusting her own reality, which is never a fun thing. She might think mom is a hallucination, might think she made up the dying thing in her head, might think any number of things to try and make everything make sense.

As for the other friends being a trigger. Yes, they could be. They were, after all, there. And -anything- in the environment can become a trigger. But that is a could and they don’t necessarily -have- to be.

3 weeks ago, my car got hit while i was asleep in the middle of the night. the person left his insurance and phone number.so he knew he was at fault 100%. i called the insurance and they agreed to fix my car. since the person hit my wheel and bumper at the same time my car was not drivable at all, so they got a towing truck to take it to the shop. i received a call 2 day later from the insurance telling me that they could only fix my bumper because it the accident had nothing to do with a broken part from the other side of where the car got hit. now my car was working perfectly fine the day before the accident. and the insurance doesnt want to fix the part that broke because they said it was impossible for the part to brake and because the part was rusted. I was Driving down a road going about 35-40 mph. Both Vehicles had to be towed away.
